Abstract:
This research is intended to reveal how a character named James Durie can demonstrate what ambition and causes it. The study uses qualitative research methods. The study also employes a psychological approach and employed the Ludwig Klages the psychological theory of personality and supporting theory about ambitions by Widarso to explain and support the study on an ambition met by a character named James Durie in The Master of Ballantrae: A Winter’s Tale novel. This study suggests that James Durie, as a character capable of meeting all the criteria of his ambition ranging physiological needs, love, honor, position, property and all that he desires must manifest so that, as can be seen by the characteristics of ambitious people in one’s own self-interest, it can be deduced from this study that James Durie or The Master of Ballantrae had the ambition reflected in this novel.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to challenge existing models of career ambition, extending understanding of how women define and experience ambition at early career stages in a professional services organisation. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 women from a professional services organisation, who were aged 24-33 and had not yet reached managerial positions. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and template analysis was conducted. Findings The analysis revealed four main themes in the women’s experiences: subjective, dynamic ambition; frustrated lack of sight; self-efficacy enables ambition; and a need for resilience vs a need to adapt. The findings support that women do identify as ambitious, but they vary in the extent to which they view ambition as intrinsic and stable, or affected by external, contextual factors, such as identity-fit, barriers, support and work-life conflict. Research limitations/implications These results demonstrated insufficiency of current models of ambition and a new model was proposed. The model explains how women’s workplace experiences affect their ambition and therefore how organisations and individuals can better support women to maintain and fulfil their ambitions. Originality/value This study extends and contributes to the redefinition of women’s career ambition, proposing a model incorporating women’s affective responses to both internal (psychological) and external (organisational) factors. It provides further evidence against previous individual-level claims that women “opt-out” of their careers due to an inherent lack of ambition, focussing on the interplay of contextual-level explanations.

Abstract:
The health of any democratic system depends on political ambition to generate a steady supply of quality candidates for office. Because most models of candidate entry assume ambition rather than model it, previous research fails to understand its roots in individual and institutional characteristics. We develop a two-stage model of progressive behavior that distinguishes between the formation of ambition for higher office and the decision to enter a particular race. Using data from a survey of state legislators, we demonstrate that the intrinsic costs and benefits associated with running for and holding higher office shape ambitions but do not influence the decision to run. For progressively ambitious legislators, the second-stage decision is a strategic choice aboutwhento run rather thanwhetherto run. Our research highlights how institutional characteristics that foster progressive ambition also increase the likelihood that national or local political conditions will be translated into meaningful choices at the ballot box.

Abstract:
The micro-foundations of party unity are still an understudied topic in comparative politics. This article explores the effects of political ambition on party loyalty in Members of the Chamber of Deputies’ (MCDs) claimed votes based on attitudinal data. Ambition theory posits that ambitious politicians should act according to the (s)electorate they are aiming to win for the next election, therefore acting prospectively in their legislative votes. Findings suggest that MCDs seeking office in the national executive branch are more likely to follow the party line and less likely to side with their district or vote inconsistently. While inclusiveness of candidate selection procedures alone does not have an effect, its interaction with differing ambitions does. The results provide us with a first systematic analysis of ambition and its effect on party loyalty in 14 countries by examining the individual MCD more closely.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of a cross-cultural study of self-assessment of ambition of Russian and Turkmen students. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of self-esteem of ambition and the degree of its expression among students from different countries. The research was carried out using the questionnaire "Ambition" (OV Barsukova). The study involved 166 students aged 17-19 years: 94 Russian students and 72 Turkmen students. The majority of Russian students consider themselves to be more ambitious than ambitious people (48.94%), about a quarter of Russian students consider themselves to be unambitious people (25.53%), and a fifth - more un ambitious than ambitious people (21.28%) ), the minimum number - by undemanding people (4.26%). Most of the Russian students rate their ambition as moderate (51.056%), the minimum part of the students - as low (12.77%). On the whole, Russian students consider themselves ambitious rather than undemanding people and rate their ambition as moderate. The overwhelming majority of Turkmen students consider themselves to be ambitious people (83.33%), an insignificant part of students consider themselves to be more ambitious people than unambitious (11.11%) and undemanding people (5.56%). The majority of Turkmen students rate their ambition as high (61.11%), just over a quarter of them - as low (27.78%), the minimum number - as moderate (11.11%). In general, Turkmen students consider themselves ambitious and rate their ambition as high. A comparative analysis of the self-esteem of the ambition of Russian and Turkmen students was revealed according to the following indicators: the assessment of oneself as ambitious people prevails among Turkmen students, the assessment of oneself as people who are more ambitious than undemanding people prevails among Russian students, and the assessment of their ambition as moderate prevails among Russian students.

The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of self-assessment of ambition of students - representatives of Y and Z generations. The aim of the study was to identify the similarities and differences in self-esteem of ambition and the degree of its expression among young people of different generations. A cross-sectional survey of young people's ambition was conducted in 2009 (Gen Y youth) and 2020 (Gen Z youth). The study involved 200 young people aged 18-22: 106 young people of generation Y and 94 young people of generation Z. To study ambition, the “Ambition” questionnaire (O.V. Barsukova) was used. Most of the young people of generation Y assess themselves as ambitious or rather ambitious people (70.42%), slightly more than a quarter of students (28.17%) consider themselves to be un-ambitious people or rather un-ambitious than ambitious people. The minimum number of students found it difficult to assess themselves (1.41%). Most of the young people of generation Y rate their ambition as high (45.07%), about a third of them - as moderate (30.99%), about a quarter of them - as low (23.94%). The majority of young people of generation Z (70.22%) consider themselves ambitious people or rather ambitious than un-ambitious people, about a third of them (29.79%) consider themselves un-ambitious people or rather un-ambitious than ambitious people. There were no young people who found it difficult to assess themselves. Most of the young people of generation Z rate their ambition as moderate (51.06%), just over a third of them - as high (36.17%), the minimum number - as low (12.77%). There were no significant differences in the self-esteem of ambition and in the degree of its expression among young people belonging to different generations.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aims to examine a new model that fills the gaps and limitations of the previous concept, namely work ambition, which is inconsistent with Islamic values. This study presents the concept of karimah work ambition that can be accepted by Muslim employees so that it will help them achieve their best career without violating Islamic values. Methodology: The method used is a simple random sampling of employees of the Navigation District in Semarang City, Indonesia. The results of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) N = 80 indicate a scale capable of measuring karimah work ambition. The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (First-Order CFA) show that all indicators can explain latent constructs with outer loading values > 0.7. The structured Karimah work ambition scale has passed the psychometric property test, so it can be applied. Findings: The results of the study show that karimah work ambition is built on four dimensions, namely Amanah (trustworthiness) in dealing with challenges, Rida (acceptance) to the results of self-development, Shobaro (Patient) in will and Shiddiq (Honest) In will. Originality: This article is perhaps the only one that explores the concept of work ambition based on Islamic values. Practical and Social Implication: This research will provide leaders with knowledge on how to manage the ambitions of their employees without deviating from Islamic value. In addition, this research will provide knowledge to employees about how ambitious they are to achieve their careers based on Islamic values.

Abstract:
Introduction. Jordanian education system encourages students to invest their potentials to fulfill their needs, make their ambitions come true and achieve success in their lives. However, many students still face problems in determining their ambitions and vocational tendencies to attain their goals.Aim. This study aims to identify the degree of ambition level and its relation to the vocational tendencies among university students with respect to the common culture. It focused on two main domains, namely the ambition level and its relation with vocational tendencies.Methodology and research methods. A quantitative method was adopted to analyse the data. The study sample consisted of 500 male and female students studying at Al-Balqa Applied University (BAU) chosen randomly. The authors developed a study instrument which was divided into ambition level 10 items. Strong – Campbell Interest Inventory Scale was applied to examine the tendencies of vocational development. This scale consisted of 42 items divided into six domains.Results. The results showed there was a statistically significant positive relation between the ambition level and vocational tendency among BAU students. There were statistically significant differences at (.05 = a) in the ambition level attributed to the effect of the gender factor in favour of females. Also, there were statistically significant differences in the vocational tendencies attributed to the gender effect in all domains except the vocation selection domain. These differences were in favour of males in relation to the study materials domain, but in favour of females in relation to all the other domains as a whole. The vocational tendencies variable was considered a significant variable that increased the achievement of students’ ambitions.Scientific novelty. The study concluded that developing social changes require a high level of ambitions to cope with the continuous developments in different domains particularly the academic domain. Educators can develop students’ ambition level and identify vocational tendencies to excel in their own goals toward innovation and creativity in light of the common culture.Practical significance. The study draws interesting conclusions based on the analysis and discusses practical recommendations for key stakeholders. The Ministry of Education in Jordan should pay more attention to the vocational tendencies among students from earlier stages to direct these tendencies in appropriate ways that provide students with a good academic life leading to decent social, vocational and practical life that gets along with the common Jordanian culture. Besides, universities are recommended to focus on ways of developing the ambition level among students by raising parents’ awareness to set a good example to their children, bring them up from an early age to be ambitious and promote their ambition level.

Abstract:

This essay is about how newly graduated teachers experience their first year in teaching. The main focus is linked to the theory about the pedagogy triangle of Bermuda. It involves two dimensions with six main aspects. The first dimension is the psychosocial-, including, ambition, demands and the possibility to achieve ambition and demands. The second dimension is the didactic-, including the what-, why- and how-qustions.

The results of the study shows that teachers experience their first year in teaching different, depending primarly of the ascpets of the psychosocial dimension. The didactic dimension tends to incoroprate into the psychosocial dimension via ambition and demands. Ambition and demands are vital for the understanding of  how newly graduated teachers experience their first year in teaching. It is throw these aspects they look upon the reality and estimate their performance. If the ambition and the demands are inline with the how the reality develop the feeling of satisfaction grow.

Abstract:
This research questions the implementation of ambitions, adults in vocational training. We propose to understand how voluntary approaches develop and concretise to alter the course of personal trajectories, in contact with an institution. The starting point of this research lies in the question of projects, professional at first, that appear to reveal identity construction process. We propose a sociological study of ambitions, to understand the structure, conduct and interaction effects between the training system and its publics. On both sides, the training is a mean to respond to several issues that go beyond the learning achieved. We want to understand how these separate issues are linked and worked in a joint manner. Observed in its realization, ambition reveals social dynamics, produced by the current paths and explaining the expected orientation of the biographical construction. The analysis of ambitions shows how convergence between individual judgment and the adults vocational training program’s modus operandi. The demonstration of these phenomena and differences allows us to study how supply and demand for adults training manage to grant together or not, when they come in contact

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study of Muslims in the United Kingdom 'Between Reality and Ambition' represents one of the most important and challenging subjects in the arena of public concern. Yet if we were to move beyond the geographical boundaries of the subject of this research we would surely find similar concerns, hopes and visions being represented in a large part of the Islamic and western world. A reading of present realities testifies a struggle between ideological success and failure. This struggle has played a decisive role in the condition of the Muslim community in the United Kingdom. Similarly the principles of Da 'wah (propagation) and its priorities, the human environment to which these efforts are directed and the freedom afforded for such activities in the west constitute fundamental points of reference for an understanding of the Islamic project in the west. In addition, the western outlook on life, and its philosophical bases, influences and communicative methods all provide genuine indicators of the challenges confronting Muslims in the west. The presence of various Islamic groups in the United Kingdom reflects, in one way or another, a representation of the Islamic world in all its dimensions, visions, thoughts and culture. Thus it may be truly fitting to advance certain vital proposals specifying the parameters of Islamic activity in the west. They may lead to increased understanding and a closing of the ranks between the various groups. This study will further take into account the vital question of educational training which is in itself a major handicap of Muslims everywhere. While this research lays no claim to finality, it nevertheless has at least opened the doors for further discussion and enquiry that may eventually lead to an improvement in the conditions of Muslims in the west. Similarly, it is the author's hope that this study will have illuminated several important aspects of life of Muslims in the United Kingdom, and that by so doing, it will have inspired and assisted the various Islamic Centres and charitable associations in their efforts towards progress and development.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper was to investigate how teachers work to lead and motivate high-performing students, and how these students were defined. The method used was qualitative, more specifically an interview, which was then analyzed with a thematic analysis. Six teachers participated in the survey, and what emerged was that high-performing students were often ambitious, structured and social students. High performing students were also characterized by the fact that they needed challenges, attention and positive feedback on their performances, otherwise they ran a risk of not performing. Structure was also important for the teachers themselves, that they had a goal when teaching and a way of achieving that goal. The most important thing for students, to perform as well as possible, is that they are secure in themselves, get attention, have high ambitions and clear objectives. This increases their self-esteem and their chances of getting a higher grade increases. Self-esteem also depends on which subject you are governed by. If success motive predominates, you put up high, but realistic, goals and pick up positive experiences to enhance your self-image, while if you are controlled by avoiding defeat, you try to avoid risks by setting low goals. It is also important that the desire does not take the upper hand, because of the risk of students burning themselves out. In many cases the resources and priority goes to those who have it more difficult in school, but resources are also needed for high-performing students, otherwise there is a risk that they might lose interest and motivation.

Abstract:

Background: Many different parties in the society are affected by the financial information delivered by the companies. Therefore, different interests want their ideas to have an impact on the accountning standards. The construction of the accounting standards are illustrated as a pure political process, where lobbying and conflicts of interest are determining factors.

Purpose: The purpose is to understand the underlying interests behind regulation of financial accounting in Sweden and how these interests are manifestated in the establishment of accounting standards.

Method: The thesis is designed as a casestudy of the regulation process which induced the legislation of the Årsredovisningslagen 6 kap 1 § 3st. The case process has been analysed through interviews and document studies from the arise of the intention of regulation of different interest parties, until the accounting law was established.

Results: Lobbying and interest of conflicts exists in accounting regulation processes. Depending on the subject of reglulation, different parties feel their interests beeing challenged. The intensity in the conflict of interest and the incentive to lobby depends on the “matter” of the regulation. The process are governed in the constitution of the private individuals of the deciding regulation body.

Abstract:
Organizations are changing and growing constantly, which leads to higher complexity in development processes. For the development of complex products in a systematic way, requirements provide support. At Scania, it is of interest to investigate how engineers in the company work with requirements since a new safety standard is set to be implemented, which entails a change in the work with requirements. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate the ambition for working with requirements at Scania and to identify factors that can impede a change improvement in requirement engineering. This study aids in providing support for applying new practices when implementing a new safety standard. Literature within the fields of organizational change, change management and requirement engineering are considered. A qualitative case study at an automotive OEM has been conducted, where data was collected through 21 semi-structured interviews and internal documents. The findings show that the ambition level from the company perspective is not clear at Scania, thus engineers and units at the company set their own individual ambition for working with requirements and work in different ways across the organization. Also, several impeding factors such as standardization and different processes have been identified that could impede a change initiative for an improvement in the requirement engineering process. The findings contribute to the understanding of engineers purposes and motivation for requirement engineering. Furthermore, a change initiative in requirement engineering is investigated, where the impeding factors for the change are identified. Also, safety critical system development using requirement engineering is explored. It is suggested that future studies could compare other units and companies requirement engineering, and also leverage qualitative methods. Originality – To the best knowledge of the authors this is the first study to examine change initiative using Schein’s change model in a requirement engineering setting.

Abstract:
Ambition, innocently defined as ‘something one ardently desires to achieve,’ by the Oxford Learners Dictionary, harbors a paradoxical trait - its capacity for peril when taken to excess. This enigma finds early expression in the myth of Icarus, whose disregard for moderation led to his tragic demise. Across the annals of English literature, from the Renaissance to the Modern era, this theme of ambition’s double-edged sword echoes prominently. Works like Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragedy of Dr. Faustus, the Shakespearean tragedies both Macbeth and Julius Caeser straddling the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, Mary Shelley’s Romantic masterpiece Frankenstein, Emily Bronte’s enduring classic Wuthering Heights from the Victorian era, and Arthur Miller’s Modern American drama Death of a Salesman all serve as vivid canvases depicting the havoc wrought by unchecked ambition. This paper examines the motivations and consequences of unrestrained ambition, highlighting the importance of moderation in pursuing one’s goals. Applying a qualitative methodology rooted in textual analysis, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of overreaching ambition on literary characters and its reflection on society.

Abstract:
In this paper the results of a broad survey under all students (response 69%, n=12,481) and management of all faculties of Saxion University will be presented. Saxion is a university of applied sciences located in the East of the Netherlands with 18.000 students divided over 13 faculties and 64 studies. The survey was held in the summer of 2007 and will be repeated for several years. It is shown that the interest of students to start their own company is large (over 55% in the general population) and varies over the several faculties (range 13% - 81%). A total number of 287 student companies is identified for further in depth study. Some of these cases of student companies are included in the paper. The total number of student companies at Saxion University can be estimated at 415. Based on the results of the survey a funnel type of approach is suggested to boost the number and quality of the Saxion University spin off firms to reach a total number to a turnover of 250 companies a year, to double the recent output since this doubling is the ambition of the management of Saxion University. A rather traditional approach of stimulating measures is the backbone of this funnel but the philosophy behind it is going much deeper. The authors suggest to use a model for the development of a spin off company based on three independent sub processes : - development of formula - development of organization - development of ambition The most important sub process here is the development of ambition. One of the basic rules of supporting instruments should be the nurturing of the real and deep ambition of the young entrepreneur. This may seem in contrast with the more traditional supporting instruments like providing shovel money and helping to make a business plan. New instruments should be developed to nurture and stimulate ambition. But first of all : When a university wants to attract ambitious young entrepreneurial students it starts with the ambition of the university itself.

Holz, Ceecee. Are G20 countries doing their fair share of global climate mitigation?: Comparing ambition and fair shares assessments of G20 countries' nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Oxfam International, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2023.621540.

Full text
Abstract:
As the group of the world’s largest economies and biggest emitters, G20 countries are central to implementing solutions to the climate emergency. This discussion paper assesses to what extent they are setting climate mitigation targets that are ambitious enough and/or meet their fair share of global emissions reductions consistent with limiting global heating to 1.5°C. It applies three different methodologies to assess their pledges. Despite some differences between these methodologies, the paper finds that the G20 countries – both collectively, and almost all of them individually – are failing to achieve their fair share of ambitious global mitigation required to limit global heating to 1.5°C, regardless of which assessment methodology is applied. Additionally, the assessment shows that the high-income G20 member countries are pledging to do a much smaller fraction of their fair share as compared to the middle-income countries. The G7 countries among the G20, in particular, appear to now be focusing their attention on the increase of ambition of middle-income and low-income countries while not recognising the need to also substantially increase the ambition in their own 2030 pledges. Additionally, the G7 countries continue to fail to recognise the need to commit to individual long-term climate finance to low and middle-income countries, at a scale much higher than what they currently provide, to enable rapid and just transitions to climate-resilient and low-carbon societies powered by renewable energy. This analysis highlights that G20 countries must both urgently, and before COP28 in December 2023, raise the ambition of their pledges for action by 2030, ramp up their provision of international climate finance and increase their international cooperation and support.

Bravo, Sandra, Jennifer Doherty-Bigara, and Daniella Restrepo Duarte. Toward Enhanced Climate Ambition: Transparency and Digital Governance in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, April 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0012899.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate data governance is a key step in taking advantage of the opportunities offered by innovative financial mechanisms, based on the provision of data and indicators that can attest to the achievement of a countrys climate targets and commitments. For example, green bonds require the bond issuer to communicate environmental or climate sustainability objectives to investors in a transparent manner, as well as to undergo external evaluation and review. Therefore, having a robust and clear monitoring and reporting system in place can help governments access new instruments and consolidate the operationalization of their climate action, in alignment with the targets set by their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The publication consists of four parts. The first part describes the context of the role of transparency and digital governance in the development of climate ambition. The second part analyzes the current state of the ETF on a sample of ten countries in the region. Part three studies the situation of open climate data governance and its digitization based on a sample of six countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Finally, the fourth part of the report presents its general conclusions and recommendations.

Abstract:
To tackle the threat of climate change, countries worldwide have signed the Paris Agreement. This agreement aims to limit the global average temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius and potentially below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (UNFCCC 2015). Parties to the Paris Agreement are required to submit domestic climate plans detailing their mitigation measures, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs). These plans detail countries’ ambitions and efforts to combat and respond to climate change. NDCs are communicated at five-year intervals, and each successive NDC must represent an increase in ambition over the previous one.
