Full textThe interface ecosystems are represented by the entire habitat on the edge between the continental land and the aquatic environments. They are dynamic phases of encounter between widely different environments (land, sea and air) defined as "interfaces", in which the transition from one system to another is recognizable due to the presence of marked physicochemical, biological and ecological gradients. In this case, the ecosystems are represented by the coastal environments of shallow intertidal areas of hard substrate. They are the main suppliers of goods and ecosystem services for the coastal population. In this thesis we studied the role of systematic variability of shallow intertidal environments on various important aspects of ecosystem functioning, biodiversity and ultimis on the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The aim was to study the effect of physical and chemical variability as the control factor on the characteristics of the food available from primary and secondary production in the two habitat models (lagoon and intertidal pools) along the coasts of northwestern Sicily. The results of this study highlight the role of spatial and temporal variability, which controls the largely physicochemical and trophic dynamics in these very “harsh” environments. For example, in the Lagoon of Marsala countries, the shear stress is triggered by the wind/tide synergy, plays an important role in the food availability by enhancing the coupling between the sediment and the water column. The presence of vegetation reduces the extent of the shift that becomes the highest when sea grasses are sparse or absent. The environmental test results have demonstrated the importance of these habitats in many ways. The dynamics of physical and chemical features in the rock pools of the Mediterranean are driven by tidal excursions, appears real bio-reactors. In particular, it has been shown that in order due to isolation of emersion the rock pools tripled the content of organic material every six hours, which is dispersed in the adjacent intertidal at the time of the connection with the sea in the subsequent high tide. Given the large number of pools found along the rocky shores, the export of labile organic matter produced daily is quantitatively important. This sink of energy undoubtedly contributes to the enhancement of the maintenance of high levels of biodiversity of these environments typical for the Mediterranean. The results of this study provide new information about the functioning of marine-coastal interface ecosystems, which were, up to now, the most important resource supply for the coastal population of the entire planet.

Full textThe aim of the work was the development and validation of new bioassays and biomarkers as tools in an integrated ecotoxicological approach for the biomonitoring of impacted coastal marine environment environments. The Rada of Agusta (Syracuse, Sicily) was used as real environment for the field application of the proposed integrated approach. A battery of in vivo and in vitro bioassays was investigated as screening tool of the assessment of marine sediment toxicity. The battery has proven to have the necessary requirement for a routine application in marine coastal environment biomonitoring. The multimarker approach based on the use of bioindicator organism Mytilus galloprovincialis in translocation experiments allowed to evaluate the field application potential of new cytological and molecular biomarkers in parallel to standardized biomarkers of genotoxicity and heavy metal exposure. Mussels were caged for 45 days in Brucoli (SR) and Rada di Augusta, reference site and impacted site respectively. Results support the applicability of granulocytes morphometric alterations as effect biomarker, directly correlated to the health of the organism. Morphometric alterations were accompanied by a significative increase of the lysosomal compartment, which in turn could reflect the pollutant induced increase of the degradative and autophagic processes. Carbonic anhydrase activity in digestive gland proved to be a valuable biomarker of chemical stress in marine coastal environment. The functional role of carbonic anhydrase in the lysosomal compartment functioning was evaluated. The combined use of the two methodologies (bioassays and biomarkers) in an integrated ecotoxicological approach provides a sensitive and specific tool for the assessment of pollutant exposure and pollutant effects in biomonitoring of coastal marine environment, facilitating the application of monitoring data in risk-based decision making

Full textThis research project was aimed at identifying critical parameters that could affect the survival of the endangered Testudo hermanni hermanni occurring along the Adriatic sandy coast of Italy. It was also focused on the development and optimization of protocols for long-term monitoring of a flagship species of Mediterranean coastal environments. In particular, the thesis intended to contribute to: • Improve the knowledge on the dynamics and the density of the populations of Testudo hermanni; • Investigate on microhabitat selection by Testudo hermanni in dune environment; • Describe the structure, rhythms, and spatial distribution of the population of Testudo hermanni living in the Natura 2000 site "Foce Saccione- Reclamation Ramitelli" (IT222217), useful for the definition of a strategy of long-term conservation of the species in the site. • Develop an optimal protocol for the monitoring of Testudo hermanni as a flagship and indicator species of "Coastal sandy dunes of central Italy" for the Italian Network of Long Term Ecological Research, called LTER Italy. The study of population dynamics was conducted, for 5 consecutive years, performing the method of Capture- Mark -Recapture along a fixed transect monitoring (far 1km and wide 50 m) that crosses through all coastal habitats of sand dunes. The five years study of the population of Herman tortoises showed an expansion phase with a high percentage of young individuals (39%), a sex ratio average of 0.37 and an average density, estimated by the index Lincoln Petersen, of 11.18 animals/hectare. To investigate on habitat preferences and home range of the target species, a radiotelemetric study of Hermann’s tortoise was performed between October 2012 and January 2014, on 9 specimens, combined with detailed mapping of dune habitats (scale 1: 500), based on surveys of flora and vegetation. The analysis of monthly home range changes confirmed that the target population has a bimodal cycle of seasonal activity with two peaks, in spring and in fall, and with a reduction of activity in summer. Both males and females have smaller home ranges compared with other Mediterranean populations. Moreover, females home ranges were less extensive than males ones. Our population of tortoises revealed a marked fidelity to the vital territory, and a selection of microhabitats based on the needs of protection and temperature control, with a pronounced seasonal effect during the whole cycle of activity.

Full textThis study analyses the effects of disturbance (mainly human, but also natural) on the process of invasion by alien species in the coastal dune systems of Veneto region. The research has been articulated into two levels, one focusing on morphological and functional traits of coastal dune wild species (natives and aliens) and the other on the plant community level. The results highlight that height, large leaf area and SLA are useful traits for the successful colonisation of the most invasive species along the mobile coastal dunes. Human impact has deeply contributed to the decay of the quality and functionality of coastal ecosystems, reducing the resistance native plant communities are able to oppose the arrival of invasive alien species under less disturbed conditions.
