Abstract:
This chapter examines various ways to construct symplectic manifolds and submanifolds. It begins by studying blowing up and down in both the complex and the symplectic contexts. The next section is devoted to a discussion of fibre connected sums and describes Gompf’s construction of symplectic four-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group. The chapter also contains an exposition of Gromov’s telescope construction, which shows that for open manifolds the h-principle rules and the inclusion of the space of symplectic forms into the space of nondegenerate 2-forms is a homotopy equivalence. The final section outlines Donaldson’s construction of codimension two symplectic submanifolds and explains the associated decompositions of the ambient manifold.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 explores and theorizes Eno’s approach to ambient music. It begins with a clear precursor, Erik Satie’s musique d’ameublement—furniture music. Like Satie, Eno sought sounds that could blend into and color various situations without commanding the attention of the hearer. But he also wanted music that could engage listeners who elect to attend to the activity of the assembled sounds, which distances it from other background music like Muzak. Because “ambient” has exploded into a diverse musical genre, Music for Airports is contrasted with other ambient works from the like of Aphex Twin, Moby, Gas, and Thomas Köner. What seems to distinguish Music for Airports is its ability to elicit our attention without captivating it through musical developments. Instead, it initiates a kind of reverie, opening spaces for thought in ordinary living environments.

Abstract:
Abstract During the early days of the professional English theatre, dramatists including Dekker, Greene, Heywood, Jonson, Marlowe, Middleton, and Shakespeare wrote for playhouses that, though enclosed by surrounding walls, remained open to the ambient air and the sky above. The drama written for performance at these open-air venues drew attention to and reflected on its own relationship to the space of the air. At a time when theories of the imagination emphasized dramatic performance’s reliance upon the air through which its staged fictions were presented, plays written for performance at open-air venues frequently draw attention to that element’s theatrical significance. This book considers the various ways in which the air is brought into presence within early modern drama. Analysing more than a hundred works that were performed at London’s open-air playhouses between 1576 and 1609, I evaluate how the various textual, theatrical, and staging effects used by early modern dramatists and those presenting their plays might have foregrounded the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre’s relationship to and impact on the actual air. I conclude that open-air drama’s ongoing attention to aerial imagery, actions, and representational strategies reflects an emerging dramaturgical consciousness that extended from the earth to encompass and make explicit the space of the air.

When I was asked to write about music and shape for this volume I immediately thought of the reverb programmes that I use to add ambience to individual tracks when I am mixing. Reverb presets often come in the form of representations of physical space. General categories might include stadiums, concert halls, churches, theatres, auditoriums, nightclubs, small rooms, etc. Today’s sampling reverbs, which can translate specific acoustical spaces into ambiences that can be used on any sound, include such presets as the Sydney Opera House, St Paul’s Cathedral or the Ryman Auditorium at The Grand Ole Opry, as well as less renowned, smaller spaces such as a closet, a tiled bathroom or the interior of a Ford Econoline van. Some programs simulate very specific types of spaces such as a ...

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this chapter, PRAXLABS is proposed as a framework for reflecting on and implementing elements of sustainable empirical research and user-centred design in living-lab studies. To explicate the PRAXLABS framework, this chapter presents a comparative analysis of three living-lab projects aiming at different design themes in the domestic domain: home entertainment, energy monitoring, and ambient assisted living. In each project, users were involved as co-creators in the research and design of new IT artifacts. By analyzing and comparing these cases, the chapter specifies experiences that may be transferred to other projects located in the domestic context. In addition, it discusses conditions that enable the transfer of insights across the borders of the home domain into other fields of application (e.g., work spaces, public spaces) or the field of mobile applications. Overall, the PRAXLABS framework makes experiences from different living-lab studies manageable in a systematized and sustainable manner.

Abstract:
In this book we analyse the sustainability question in the Modern Production System, which today encompasses most of the world economy. We present concepts, theories, indicators, indices, formulas, methods and historical date to examine the evolution and trends of two sustainable development dimensions: socioeconomic and environmental. We focus on the nature-economy nexus and analyse its contradictory process: the more the economics needs nature, the more its cause natural resources depletion and environmental degradation. The huge increase on CO2 emissions in the last three decades – from oil, coal and another non-renewable resources– provides strong evidence to such contradiction. We then analyze the role of material recycle as a solution against both, resources depletion and environmental degradation. Our analysis suggests that the recycle of materials can only contribute to reduce the problem. Moreover, there cycle process of materials depends, on many cases, of public or social subsidies – as financial incentives from the government and domestic material selection. The environment problem transcends borders (as an enterprise, a village, a city, or a country): one can be sustainable, but in fact transfer to other its environmental problem. We adopt the notion of Environmental Space to deal with the sustainability question. We then present and apply the concept of Eco-inequal Exchange to analyse such a question. The environmental movement, which started about fifty years ago, did transform the sustainable development into a global mission. By exposing socio-environmental problems generated by the modern production system itself, this book aims to contribute to a better understanding the limits and possibilities of ours actions as environmentalists.
