Full textSubjective well-being in the Peruvian Amazonia: the structure of their needs There has been an increasing interest in subjective well-being as an alternative concept for economic development. For a better understanding of this construct, it has to be studied in different cultures and environments. The needs and subjective well-being of people from the Amazonia has been studied in recent years; however, there has not been one study that analyzes different sites from this region with different characteristics, such as urban and rural, which limits the possibility of finding regional patterns. This thesis work studies the subjective well-being in the Peruvian Amazonia using the emic post hoc methodology, in order to identify a needs structure that applies to different sites of this region. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted using data from six locations of the Peruvian Amazonia (N = 186), including urban and rural areas of both low and high forest. The results revealed a five needs factor structure: A good place to live, Work and equipped house, Urban goods and services, Basic needs and Raise a family. This structure shows a combination of universal, modern and traditional elements. The findings of this research contribute to the understanding of the Amazon population and can serve as input for the implementation of social policies that seek development in accordance with Amazon population´s conceptions. Keywords: Needs, Subjective well-being, Amazonia

Full textDrug trafficking responds to trends that are conducive to it and adapts to global changes very quickly. The analysis of the seizures varies according to the production area of the cocaine that reaches Europe and comes 95% from Brazil, Colombia and Peru. In this context, the Peruvian Navy, whose mission is to safeguard national sovereignty and ensure security, is involved in the TID and as the National Maritime Authority - General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard, in navigable rivers: protect the aquatic environment and suppress illicit activities. The Research work seeks to improve the inadequate surveillance and control of aerial fluvial patrol of illicit activities that affect the inhabitants to complete the Information System and Monitoring of Aquatic Traffic (SIMTRAC) in the Napo and Putumayo Area (ZNP) through the recovery of the air river patrol capacity of the Amazon Naval Squadron. The theoretical foundation considers the size of the sphere of influence, the wild characteristics of the ZNP, the lack of land communication routes, and the characteristics of the criminal organizations of the TID and related crimes. The results of the applied instruments show that the product of public policy innovation to solve the problem corresponds to the acquisition of three (03) twin-engine, highwing, amphibious airborne patrol aircraft (APF), with new STOL capacity, with flight support equipment incorporated and additional equipment to complete the Aquatic Traffic Information and Monitoring System (SIMTRAC) in the ZNP and whose political and capacity organizational viability is highly probable, highly probable economic viability and regulatory viability of scope and difficulties very likely. The study concludes that the public policy innovation product is technically and economically viable through an Investment Project (PIP) in charge of the Peruvian Navy.

Full textThis research is an important input for the field of study of social representations of the environment, specifically in indigenous cultures with as little studied knowledge as the native community Yanesha de Tsachopen, one of the most representative ethnic groups in the Pasco region, Peru. The method, which involved familiarization trips with the community, carried out a thematic analysis based on 10 in-depth interviews-a semi-structured guide-that were aimed at exploring their experiences and knowing the social representations they have about the environment. In the research developed it was found that the meaning of the environment is linked to the Yanesha identity and its community history. Likewise, the meaning given to the environment, according to the theory of social representations, serves to order the solutions proposed to the environmental difficulties that their environment currently poses. Finally, it was analyzed how the population is facing new scenarios for which it is generating innovative solutions to maintain its identity and preserve its environment.

Full textGenotypes of Plasmodium vivax along with parasite density may be associated with the severity level of malaria, and knowledge of this relation can help to better understand the disease, drug treatments and the development of new vaccines. The object of this project was to determine the number of Plasmodium vivax genotypes present in the Peruvian Amazon. This genotyping utilized the gene encoding a merozoite surface protein (MSP3 alpha) and the polymorphism generated by a sequence of nucleotide repeats (TR) found in a 100 kilobases (Kb) de Plasmodium vivax syntenic chromosome 3 of Plasmodium falciparum. In this project we used 302 blood samples from patients. A blood droplet and droplet smear were obtained for the diagnostic and observation of parasite density; these results were later confirmed through Nested PCR. All samples were submitted for genotyping. Using the marker MSP3 alpha, 9 genotypes were identified, one was found associated with disease severity (P7) (P<0.05, OR>1) and other with mixed infections (P9) 1/9 (11%). For the TR, 9 pairs of primers were selected from a pool of 33 describing 102 different genotypes of which 24 (24 %) were mixed infections. Observation supported by the existence of a DNA insertion that increases the original size of the sequence, increasing the possibility that the disease become more severe. These results would indicate that populations of Plasmodium vivax are highly diverse and can result in multiple infections by different clones in hypoendemic regions such as the Peruvian Amazon, making later evaluation of drugs and vaccines more challenging.

Siu, Ting Salvatierra Karen Yvette.

Full textThe present study aims to explore the conceptions of health in a group of shamans from the Peruvian jungle. The participants were two women and eight men from the cities of Pucallpa, Tarapoto and Iquitos. We worked from the qualitative methodology and we conducted interviews in order to collect and analyze the information. We found that their conception of health includes the following dimensions: spiritual, emotional, corporal, mental and relationships. The spirituality stands out as a transversal element that goes within the understanding and the practical experience of the shamans in the health field. In addition, the body enhances as the main object of intervention. This multidimensional point of view expresses the integral conception that the shamans have about health, and that includes all dimensions of the human being. Keywords: health, shamans, spirituality.

Full textA few days of fishing in 2009 reveal a latent conflict in the Jacinto lagoon (Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peru), raising different ways of conceiving, being, and intervening in the protected area and the lagoon. This situation is the consequence of the contradictions and dilemmas of two socio-environmental models: the sustainable development model and the local model of 'cuidado'. This research identifies and analyzes every agent involved in the fishing activity. First of all, the state institutions are the Direction of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and the Regional Department of Production. Second, the Spanish International Agency for Cooperation and Development (AECID). The first and the last one are a good example of the sustainable development agents. At the local level, there are three agents: the citizens of the San Jacinto community, the fishers of the organization called ‘Tigres Negros', and the Snake of the lake (a non-human being with recognized intention, from the local perspective). The conclusion shows that each agent has its relations, representations, and agenda around the lagoon. Thus, every agent takes its particular and complex position in this heterogeneous aquatic space. With a historical, political and cultural perspective, this doctoral dissertation analyzes the aquatic and fishery culture of San Jacinto and the low Marañón area. This case study contributes to understanding the complexity of the latent social and environmental conflict within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Full textThe eddy covariance method was used to determine the carbon fluxes, ecosystem respiration and gross primary productivity of a western Amazon forest, in the Madre de Dios región in Peru and its relationship with micrometeorological parameters, from November 2016 (rainy season) until October 2018 (dry season). A sonic anemometer, infrared gas analyzer, radiation, humidity and a temperature sensors were used on the platform of the SAGES flux tower, at 46 m. The compilation, processing and the analysis of data were done using the R programming language, and the commercial software packages Eddy Pro and TOVI. A 78,30% of valid data was recorded over a period of 541 days, between October 2016 and October 2018. The air temperatures ranged between 21,6 and 25,6°C while the relative humidity fluctuated around 80%. The distribution of wind patterns showed a predominant direction towards the NW and a speed interval between 0,1 to 1,4 m.s-1. The main evidence of turbulences, u*, recorded a mean value around 0,31 m.s-1 during day and around 0,14 m.s-1 during night. Throughout the day, the peaks of temperature, wind speed, temperature and the minimum of %RH were recorded between 12:00 and 14:00 h. Short wave radiation fluxes oscillated around 300 W.m-2 and for long wave around -40 W.m-2, with highest values in the dry seasons. For the 2016-2017 wet season, a net radiation flow was recorded at 156,98 W.m-2 and 137,76 W.m-2 in the dry season. For the 2017-2018 period, these values were 151,20 W.m-2 in the rainy season and 139,81 W.m-2 in the dry season. Photosyntethic Active Radiation (PAR) recorded a daily average between 300 and 400 μmol.m-2.s-1. The daily distribution indicates that the forest received radiation between 06:00 and 18:00 h, reaching maximum peaks around noon. During the night, the forest behaved like a net source of radiation. In the flux analysis, an average daily flux of CO2 was determined ranging around -5 μmol.m-2.s-1 for the wet season and -4 μmol.m-2.s-1 for the rainy seasons. Registered storage CO2 flux values were 2,03 μmol.m-2.s-1 in the wet seasons and 1,3 μmol.m-2.s-1 in the dry season. The Net Ecosystemic Exchange (NEE) oscillated between -2 and -1 μmol.m-2.s-1. The daily behavior, influenced by the activity of the boundary layer, indicated that the forest was a carbon sink during days and a constant source at nights. Around 6:00 am, the turbulence due to the entry of solar radiation into the atmospheric boundary layer caused a CO2 flush with a maximum between 6 and 9 μmol.m-2.s-1. In the flux and energy balance analysis, sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE) were studied. On a monthly scale, H fluctuated around 20 W.m-2 and LE near 60 W.m-2, with higher values during the wet seasons due to greater cloudiness, availability of H2O and lower incoming radiation. On a daily basis, due to the presence of solar radiation, the highest heat flux was registered during the day and the peaks were reached at noon. The energy balance, as a correspondence between the net radiation and H + LE, showed slopes between 0,70 and 0,80. The loss of energy balance was caused by errors in the instrumentation, sampling, application of the turbulence filter and the presence of vertical energy reserves that were not considered and registered by the equipment. The calculation of nocturnal ecosystemic respiration (R) was determined from the quadratic hyperbolic regression of NEE vs. PAR. During the 2016-2017 period, R was in the range of 9,49 to 11,84 μmol.m-2.s-1, while in 2017-2018, it was located between 7,03 and 7,88 μmol.m-2.s-1. The magnitude of R was more intense in the rainy seasons due to promotion of heterotrophic respiration and higher humidity at soil level. Gross primary productivity (GPP) was calculated as the difference of NEE and R. The values indicated a net annual carbon fixation of 44,86 tons per hectare in the period 2016-2017 and 45,92 tons per hectare during 2017-2018. The impact of the micrometorological and physiological variables, including possible errors due to lack of data continuity, could had affected the averages in GPP. Finally, the behavior of the R was modeled using the maximum daily temperature in each season. The results showed a remarkable approximation to the experimental results, so there is the possibility of expanding this field in the search to predict the behavior of the forest in the future.

Also, the learning within and outside the school and the distance between the school culture and the culture of the indigenous community are analyzed. The methodology used was qualitative based on 15 semi-structured interviews. The results of this study allow us to conclude that five key ideas were identified in the participants of the educational community, some shared by parents, their children and the teacher and some that are more clearly expressed in one or the other group. First, the results show that the community understands the school as a means to rise socially and to stop being farmers. Secondly, two ideas are identified that are complementary and that reinforce each other, the notion that good teaching implies only teaching, that is to say that the teacher is good as long as she simply teaches (regardless of what she teaches or how she teach) and the opinion that students are responsible for their learning achievements without the teacher or family having a role in their learning. Third, the idea of obedience is observed as a fundamental aspect in the teaching-learning process. Finally, parents recognize in school a distance to the culture of the community.

Full text--- The present research work entitled “New extractive investment strategies and the situation of life quality of Peruvian Amazonian settlers in Padre Abad Province of the Ucayali Region” has been dealt with in the following manner: The problem that has guided our research has to do with the precariousness growing of living conditions of both indigenous and mestize population, who live in a part of the Amazonian area , noting that for decades , extractive companies operate in their territories in oil and monocultures, whose tendency is to increase their operations. Our objectives related to this problem were aimed, first to determine whether the new transnational companies strategies implemented through the FDI , lead to an improvement in life quality of Padre Abad population; second , to establish the degree of articulation of extractive activities with the provincial and rural economies; third, to determine in what extent the new extractive activities contribute to improve the employment conditions, education , income and political freedom; and fourth, to verify whether there are organizations and public or private institutions , able to overcome the present situation. As central hypothesis, we have considered show that the forms of capital reproduction, driven by the so-called Foreign Direct Investment and extractive and monoculture activities are not sources of life quality improvement of population; and as specific objectives oriented to show first that there is a process of consolidation of large properties oriented to extractive activities, which accelerate the disintegration of the rural economy; second, that investments in natural resources extraction are not the main source of job creation, education, services and political freedom, and finally institutions and private and public organizations in particular, lack of program guidelines and usefulness to generate sustainable development. Findings. What's new in the FDI, is given by: a) the degree of horizontal and vertical articulation that they have, through the establishment of new companies, or the association with each other, as it is the case of Aguaytia Energy; b) being that several of settlers, drivers of plots of oil palm, cocoa and other monocultures, supported by the State (DEVIDA) and international cooperation (UN, USAID), show that the contribution of these activities is not significant for their economic well-being; (c) it is not considered relevant the presence of foreign companies in the exploitation of their natural resources, as it is the case of Aguaytia Energy and others; d) the settlers also state that their economic situation has improved, compared to their situation of 5 years ago, however they also claim that their income and services have not increased; e) why whether Aguaytia Energy is considered as second in importance in the generation of energy in the world, has had no ability to articulate this area, nor with sufficient service of power, nor much less in demand of agricultural products, furthermore has failed to comply with its commitments; f) why being profitable monocultures, as the Regional Government says it, and with the growing presence of private foreign investment, residents who develop these crops, are against the eradication of coca cultivation; y g) why the regional government does not make greater investment in infrastructure and services, if they have international support and funds from the Canon and sobrecanon (taxes)? KEY WORDS: life quality, extractive activities, profit rate, land rent, foreign direct investment (FDI)
