Abstract:
In this time of disinformation and misinformation, libraries remain a reliable source of truthful and factual information. As they fervently support the agenda of lifelong learning, libraries recognise that there are various influences that redefine the process of student learning. Admittedly, librarians need to be more creative in motivating post-millennial students to help them fully develop their Media and Information Literacy (MIL) skills. This paper explores how games are adopted and utilised by academic libraries as an interactive approach to entice students to learn essential MIL competencies. It shows how games can be a viable tool not only to deliver information literacy (IL) instruction in a collaborative learning environment but to also effectively engage and attract students to use the library resources and services. While the use of games is not novel, the way it is delivered and re-purposed to meet MIL competencies is vital for today’s young generation of learners. This report demonstrates how two academic libraries in the Philippines and Kazakhstan were able to embed MIL skills through a library race challenge. Furthermore, this paper discusses the practical steps undertaken in the preparation of the game as well as the observations made during and after the activity was conducted. From this, other libraries may gain insights and best practices on how to leverage this method to further champion MIL in their own communities.

Abstract:
Learning environments that intrigue the Generation Z learner while transferring communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills are what is needed to prepare this generation for the challenges that they are going to face in the 21st century. This research focuses on design principles that would help educators and students in designing (and co-designing) game-based learning environments conducive to not only transferring content knowledge, but also of the most applauded skills that new graduates are compelled to possess. Employers agree that the students do not have what it takes to be successful in the 21st century workplace. Especially in South African context, the focus of higher education institutions can therefore not only be on content delivery, but has to also be on the development of the 4Cs, communication, collaborations, creativity and critical thinking. The research was conducted at the University of Pretoria where an existing reality game, The Amazing Race, was adapted and re-conceptualised for educational purposes. The overarching search for design principles that could be beneficial in the implementation of a game-based learning environment was guided by an investigation of the elements of the game implemented, the characteristics of games and finally the opportunities afforded to develop the 4Cs. The freshman engineering students’ experiences are discussed using the students’ own voices, and the design principles that surfaced are discussed. It seems as if there are distinct principles that could ease the efforts of practitioners in the implementation of similar learning environments. Further research is needed to refine the principles to other learning environments.

Abstract:
Voice Personal Assistant (VPA) is a software agent, which can interpret the user's voice commands and respond with appropriate information or action. The users can operate the VPA by voice to complete multiple tasks, such as read the message, order coffee, send an email, check the news, and so on. Although this new technique brings in interesting and useful features, they also pose new privacy and security risks. The current researches have focused on proof-of-concept attacks by pointing out the potential ways of launching the attacks, e.g., craft hidden voice commands to trigger malicious actions without noticing the user, fool the VPA to invoke the wrong applications. However, lacking a comprehensive understanding of the functionality of the skills and its commands prevents us from analyzing the potential threats of these attacks systematically. In this project, we developed convolutional neural networks with active learning and keyword-based approach to investigate the commands according to their capability (information retrieval or action injection) and sensitivity (sensitive or nonsensitive). Through these two levels of analysis, we will provide a complete view of VPA skills, and their susceptibility to the existing attacks.

Voice Personal Assistant (VPA) is a software agent, which can interpret the users' voice commands and respond with appropriate information or action. The current popular VPAs are Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Siri and Microsoft Cortana. The developers can build and publish third-party applications, called skills in Amazon Alex and actions in Google Homes on the VPA server. The users simply "talk" to the VPA devices to complete different tasks, like read the message, order coffee, send an email, check the news, and so on. Although this new technique brings in interesting and useful features, they also pose new potential security threats. Recent researches revealed that the vulnerabilities exist in the VPA ecosystems. The users can incorrectly invoke the malicious skill whose name has similar pronunciations to the user-intended skill. The inaudible voice triggers the unintended actions without noticing users. All the current researches focused on the potential ways of launching the attacks. The lack of a comprehensive understanding of the functionality of the skills and its commands prevents us from analyzing the potential consequences of these attacks systematically. In this project, we carried out an extensive analysis of third-party applications from Amazon Alexa and Google Home to characterize the attack surfaces. First, we developed a convolutional neural network with active learning framework to categorize the commands according to their capability, whether they are information retrieval or action injection commands. Second, we employed the keyword-based approach to classifying the commands into sensitive and nonsensitive classes. Through these two levels of analysis, we will provide a complete view of VPA skills' functionality, and their susceptibility to the existing attacks.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Ecologia Aplicada
South America is experiencing rapid forest loss and habitat conversion and degradation, and Bolivia is not an exception. The Brazil nut is harvested in the Bolivian Amazon, where this activity represents a significant source of income for thousands of rural households. The Brazil nut is the fruit of the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) and is harvested annually during a consecutive 3-month period. During this period, people migrate to the forests and create establishments, depending exclusively on forest resources for their livelihood. The purpose of this study is to verify if the Brazil nut harvesting in the Tacana II indigenous territory constitutes an importante source of disturbance for local wildlife, such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), an important apex predator. To evaluate this, camera traps were deployed before and after the nut collection and species’ site occupancy estimates and relative abundance indexes were generated and compared. Factors that could affect occupancy and detection were also evaluated. Human activity was an important factor limiting occupancy, and most species reacted negatively to this factor. Detection probability was affected by the number of cameras applied per trapping station, with some species being more likely detected when two cameras were deployed, and other reacting negatively to the presence of two cameras/site. Most commonly hunted species by people were the ones whose RAI most decreased after the nut collection period. These results provide new insights on the effect of a theoretical sustainable activity, the Brazil nut harvesting, on the respective wildlife community.

Abstract: Three sediment cores were obtained from the estuary of the Amazon river, in the region called canal Norte, with the objective to determine the sedimentation rates using 210Pb as geochronometer. The cores were analyzed for 210Po by alpha spectrometry on intention to determine 210Pb in sediments. To obtain information about the excess 210Pb, measurements of 238U content were performed by gamma spectrometry. In addition to these analyzes, physical and chemical characterization of the sediments were evaluated, as well it was performed the basic characteristics of the water in order to subsidize the interpretation of the obtained results for the radionuclides. Statistical tests of correlation had been carried through to indicate the association degree between the characteristics of the analyzed sediments. The results allowed to the identification and determination of two sedimentation rates for each analyzed profile, probably due to changes in the model of sedimentation occurred in that region. The obtained sedimentation rates varied from 0,45 to 2,51 g/cm2.year, corresponding to a range of 0,42 to 1,76 cm/year.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We describe a new task called The Amazing Race: Robot Edition. In this task, the robot is placed in a real, unknown environment, without a map, and asked to find a designated location. It will need to explore its surroundings, find and approach people, engage them in a dialogue to obtain directions to the goal, and follow those directions to the hallway with the goal. We describe and implement a variety of robotic behaviors that performs each of these functions. We test these in the real world in test environments that were distinct from the training environments where we developed our methods and trained our models. Additionally, these test environments were completely unmodified and reflect the state of the real world.
First, we describe how our robotic system solves this problem where the environment is constrained to a single floor or a single building. We demonstrate that we are able to find a goal location in never-before-seen environments. Next, we describe a machine-learned approach to the dialogue and components of our system to make it more robust to the diversity and noisiness of navigational instructions someone may provide.

Under the popularity of tourism reality TV shows, reality TV has gradually become one of the sources offering audiences tourism destination images around the world. Out of the research motivation, in this study, the "The Amazing Race" program, which has the widest audience groups, is taken as the example, relevant literatures are referred to write the interview outline, and the interview method is used to conduct the one-to-one interview with 11 respondents and organize their interview transcripts, to analyze the impact of the U.S. tourism reality TV shows on Taiwanese audiences’ viewing behavior and tourism destination images. The results show that the TV shows with tourism, contests, and reality improve Taiwanese audiences’ enthusiastic involvement in the "The Amazing Race" program. Although Taiwanese audiences doubt the authenticity of tourism reality TV shows, their viewing behavior is not affected. With regard to tourism destination images, in this study, Vietnam, Botswana, and Germany are taken as the examples to compare the impact on local tourism destination images among Vietnam, which is near Taiwan, Botswana, with which Taiwanese are unfamiliar, and Germany, which is an advanced country after the tourism reality TV shows are watched. The results show that audiences’ tourism destination image of Vietnam and Germany is deeply influenced by organic images. The contents of the program make audiences have more specific local images. If the program does not comply with the organic image of audiences, audiences choose to doubt that the reality TV shows include necessary modifications and assembling for program production, and are less affected by local tourism destination images. In contrast, audiences’ tourism destination images are influenced more by the tourism reality TV show to Botswana and audiences select the most impressive images in the reality TV show to represent the most representative tourism destination image of Botswana.

Abstract:
During the Black Power era, ordinary black women from all walks of life developed critical appraisals of the race, class, and gender constructs that governed their lives. They also advanced new ideas about what life might look like if they escaped the crushing weight of white supremacy. Black domestic workers, members of the Black Panther Party, and Black Power feminists all consistently and collectively imagined a new world and their role within it. Yet historical narratives continue to reinforce the idea that black men were the only ones capable of conjuring up new identities and idealized societies. Or, as scholar-activist Angela Davis put it in an October 2013 speech, we are still unable to “imagine and acknowledge what must have been, among these Black women domestic workers, this amazing collective imagination of a future world without racial and gender and economic oppression.”...

In order to understand mammals and their amazing variety, we must first learn about their shared biology. ‘The biology of mammals’ first considers how and why mammals stay warm and active. Mammals are endotherms, meaning they have a high metabolic rate, high and constant body temperature, and high maximum activity level. A high metabolic rate requires a lot of food and oxygen, but the benefits are that mammals can remain active for longer and they are more complex internally. Their ability to save water, methods of obtaining food, modes of locomotion, sense organs, and methods of reproduction are also considered alongside their brain and behaviour.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on The Amazons Social Aid and Benevolent Society and The Black Storyville Baby Dolls. The Amazons is group of breast cancer survivors, both natives and transplants, who provide support to other survivors while celebrating life through costuming and parading. Wearing breastplates and brandishing swords, the group commandeers a militaristic posture that exudes strength and power. While the group’s main focus is social aid and support, the members use Mardi Gras parades to make a public statement of women’s empowerment. The Black Storyville Baby Dolls, also founded by Dianne Honoré, draw directly on the African-American tradition of Baby Dolls, the historical practice of adult women dressing as young girls, in beautiful outfits made of satin, dancing in the streets, and acting tough (smoking cigars). Both groups exemplify the use of Carnival as an opportunity to resist gender and race stereotypes.

Abstract:
The electric heating pad represents one of the medical devices that escaped the FDA safety net by a “grandfather” exemption. An amazing number of philosophical safety issues are introduced by this relatively innocuous commodity. Pain relief is a major attribute of heating pads followed by a minor in actual medical efficacy associated with the improvement of local blood circulation. By contrast, the historic downside is very dramatic featuring electrocution, fire, and skin burns. This paper begins with a brief introduction to current protocol for placing new medical devices into the stream of commerce. In the case of heating pads, it is fortunate that the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. developed and promulgated design rules that effectively mitigated the dangers of shock/electrocution and fire. On the other hand, UL has not undertaken a technical program that addresses the skin burn problem that is the focus of this paper. Nevertheless, many heating pad manufacturers are under the impression that their compliance with UL 130 has ameliorated the skin burn propensity of their pads. Heating pad manufacturers have attempted to control skin burn injuries exclusively through the means of on-product and in-manual warnings that have been promulgated by UL, FDA, and CPSC. This approach has tenaciously maintained a burn rate of 1600 cases per year. A different approach to the skin burn problem is automatically orchestrated by invoking the “Safety Hierarchy.” For example, falling asleep and causing prolonged skin exposures to a heated pad can be eliminated by a dead-man control. Exposure to extreme temperatures that arise when both faces of the pad are concurrently covered is perhaps the most prevalent cause of skin burns. This paper exploits the notion of monitoring both face temperatures and shutting off the pad when they are almost the same. We also explored shutting down the pad when the cycle rate of the bang-bang controls was sufficiently slow; higher heating rates are associated with an uncovered face.

Abstract:
The exponential growth in electronic power has brought amazing technology but with it also comes a burden in high heat production that threatens the safety of the product since electronics’ failure rate increases by its operating temperature. As such, cooling techniques have a key role to keep the temperature of electronics devices, such as processors, memory and graphics chips, below a maximum operating temperature. In this work, a porous filled heat exchanger has been numerically modeled to investigate the cooling effectiveness and temperature distribution on the base of the heat exchanger subjected to high heat flux leaving these devices. The effects of different nanofluid coolants (0.75% double walled carbon nanotube in water (DWCNT), 1% alumina in water, and 1% diamond in 20:80 ethylene glycol/water), porous materials (copper and annealed pyrolytic graphite (APG)), and porosity values are investigated. The coolant enters from an inlet channel normal to the base, moves through the porous field, and then leaves the heat exchanger through two opposite exit channels parallel to the base. The study is performed for two and three dimensional geometries in which two different designs are studied for 3D cases. One of the designs has a rectangular cross sectional inlet channel (along transverse direction) and the other design has square one. The results indicate that utilizing APG porous matrix, for all studied coolants of pure water and water based nano fluidics, improves substantially the cooling of the base of the heat exchanger in 2D and 3D with rectangular inlet. The results also show that utilizing carbon nanofluids (DWCNT) as coolant for high porosity structures, in both copper and APG porous matrices, improves cooling efficiency and temperature uniformity over the base, for all 2D and 3D cases. The effect of inlet channel geometry, square and rectangular, is also investigated for either similar velocity or similar mass flow rate at the inlet channel entrances.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: To examine crowd-sourced programming as an experiential learning, instructional medium. The goal is to provide real-time, real-world, artificial intelligence programming without textbook instructional materials. Background: Open source software has resulted in loosely knit communities of global software developers that work together on a software project. Taking open source software development to another level, current trends have expanded into crowd sourced development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This project explored the use of Amazon Alexa’s tools and web resources to learn AI software development. Methodology: This project incorporated experiential and inquiry educational methods that combined direct experience with crowd-sourced programming while requiring students to take risks, solve problems, be creative, make mistakes and resolve them. The instructor facilitated the learning experience through weekly meetings and structured reports that focused on goal setting and analysis of problems. This project is part of ongoing research into small group creative works research that provides students with real-world coding experience. Contribution: Undergraduate students successfully programmed an introductory level social bot using experiential learning methods and a crowd-sourced programming project (Amazon Alexa social bot). Findings: A of the experience and findings will be included with final paper release summary Recommendations for Practitioners: Crowd sourced programming provides opportunities and can be harnessed for semester long coding projects to develop student programming skills through direct involvement in real open sourced projects. Recommendation for Researchers: There is a high rate of failure associated with software projects, yet pro-gramming courses continue to be taught as they have been for decades. More research needs to be done and instructional materials developed for the undergraduate level that use real programming projects. Can we improve the rate of success for software projects by requiring expe-riential education in our courses? Impact on Society: Crowd-sourced programming is an opportunity for students to learn to program and build their portfolio with real world experience. Students participating in crowd-sourced programming are involved in creative works research and gain experience developing real-world software. Future Research: Future research will explore experiential learning such as crowd-sourced and other open source programming opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in real software development.

Abstract:
March 2021, a 12-month-old infant was brought to the HPS East Zone Little Jonh, in the capital of the State of Amazonas, Brazil, where she was admitted with fever, vomiting, intense prostration, little acceptance of breast milk, difficulty in walking, associated with left-facing strabismus and neck stiffness. At admission, the main author performed a lumbar puncture, and serological tests on the CSF to identify the causative agent were referred to a reference laboratory, which suggested that they be referred to the Central Laboratory - LACEN for suspecting the presence of agent Angionsytrongylis Canyonensis. Although, the identification of the causative agent is difficult to be detected and confirmed, this case report shows us the importance of the clinical laboratory in the identification of Eosinophilic Meningitis. The sub-detection of eosinophils in the CSF helps to underestimate the prevalence of eosinophilic meningitis. Thus, CSF analysis, slide preparation, sediment staining, as well as knowledge about the importance of adequate leukocyte differentiation in CSF are extremely important, to properly conduct the final diagnosis of the disease and prevent possible endemicity. The knowledge of this condition and early detection allows an effective therapy and improvement of public health actions. ? ?,

In ASME 2013 International Pipeline Geotechnical Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipg2013-1916.

Abstract:
The experience gained during the operation and maintenance activities on the Camisea Pipeline Gas Transport System (SDT) owned by TGP in Peru — which goes from the Amazon rainforest in the region of Cusco to the Pacific coast near Lima, along 729 Km — has led to the evolution and the optimization of the design, construction and maintenance processes regarding works focused on the stabilization of the slopes along the right of way of the pipeline carrying natural gas and natural gas liquid. This section of the right of way is 95 km long and crosses tropical mountains in the Amazon rainforest, in a transitional area between the Manugaly valley and the basin top boundary. It was noticed since 2005 that the right of way had being affected by a land slide consisting of a horizontal crack in the ground, between both pipelines and along them. So, after number of in-site inspections, the team concluded that the area was being affected by a large ground removal event. As a consequence, traces of geotechnical instability were found on the right side of the right of way, consisting of stress cracks, transverse settlements and leaks. All of those were affecting the stability conditions of the ground. From the annual in-site follow-up, monitoring and geotechnical testing, the team established that this process affecting the right of way was caused by a large mass removal process directly related to the increase of the imbalance rate of an old colluvial deposit below the entire area, triggered by the heavy rainfall in the area — ca. 3 500 mm a year, mainly between October and April. It is to be mentioned that the axis of the NG and NGL pipelines is located on the top of this colluvial deposit, which is susceptible to landslides. This is noticeable because of cracks present in the place. Local geomorphology and heavy deforestation — caused by locals — triggers an increase of the rainfall water filtration rate into the ground, thus speeding up the slide processes. Piezometers installed in the area showed high levels of the local water table. Movement readings are: top length: 70 m; length: 250 m; width: 150 m. Criteria for the construction of landslide mitigation structures in the pipeline área are being established based on a permanent land survey monitoring system — including inclinometers, piezometers and strain-gages — as this is a large regional movement. This control action allowed the operation to continue free of damages to the pipelines and under controlled costs.

Abstract:
Venezuela is a country with a great deal of water sources, as a consequence of its location in the Amazon Basin. In spite of this, about 1.6 million inhabitants are dispersed in remote regions throughout the nation, where water distribution is problematic due to the lack of this resource. Since 2007, The Institute of Energy of the Simon Bolivar University has been focused on the development of a 25 liters per day single stage solar Multi-effect Humidification (MEH) desalination plant using a flat plate solar collector. Once the construction of the prototype plant was completed, the characterization of its different components was performed. The one related to the solar collector unit was done on a testing rig designed and constructed according to the ANSI/ASHRAE 93-2003 standard requirements. In order to optimize the operation of this equipment is necessary to maximize the exergetic change of the working fluid across the solar collector, to achieve this objective a numerical simulation using a predictive algorithm and an available yearlong meteorological data was performed. The prediction algorithm was validated against experimental data obtained from the characterization tests. The numerical results obtained were in good agreement with previous related researches. It was found that the best way to operate the solar collector in remote areas and ensure the maximum exergetic gain of the working fluid was to maintain a fix mass flow rate of 0.006 kg/s (0.36 LPM). This corresponds with the climate conditions at Simon Bolivar University and an admission temperature of 54°C, which is the design value of the desalination plant.
