Sundqvist, Jill. "Fan fictions eller adaptioner? : Om Amy Heckerlings spelfilm Clueless (1996) och Debra White Smiths roman Amanda (2006) mot Jane Austens roman Emma (1815)." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Litteraturvetenskap, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-16449.

Abstract:

Connor, Amanda(Amanda Jane). "Memory and pattern : an interrogation of the privacy of consciousness through visual practice." Thesis, 2004. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/19175/1/whole_ConnorAmandaJane2004_thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
In less than three years, I have accumulated over a million words in journal entries. The written outpourings constitute an intensely private realm, and yet I have sought to express the essence of the content and process of my written records, providing it with a visual form. My work features wooden constructions, including objects resembling letters of the alphabet, onto which I have transcribed hand-written fragments of text from the journal. The central investigation of my project concerns a dichotomy between creative expression and the privacy of consciousness, exploring the capacity of realms of creative expression to deal with this tension. Through artistic practice and through reference to other work, I have been evaluating the potential of employing a visual language, incorporating written text, to transcend the dilemma of expressing that which lies in a highly personal realm, but is nevertheless indicative of a craving to reach beyond the barrier of loneliness and isolation. The voice meanders in an incessant dialogue between concealment and revelation that finds its visual metaphor in the palimpsest. The creation of a haphazardly organized alphabet demonstrates the awkwardness of language and its limitations as a tool to penetrate beyond the surface of perception to objective truths, while the volume of written text expresses the relentless nature of a search for personal truth, which is specifically focussed on understanding the dialogue between ones perception and that which one perceives, in particular, embodiments of consciousness that exist outside of ones own. I have utilized moving images to enhance and magnify the issue of subjectivity. This component was explored at a later stage of my research, and marks a significant development in my thinking, in which I encountered a more optimistic understanding of the potential fluidity of subjectivity, distinct from earlier inclinations to regard the subjective realm as a fixed enclosure. The work's function is to glorify the dilemma without solving it, aiming to induce in the viewer a mesmerized awareness of the mystery and complexity of human experience.

Ruler, Amanda Jane. "Culture of nursing homes : an ethnomethodological study / Amanda Jane Ruler." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/19726.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 309-334.
Examines the culture of two nursing homes using an ethnographic method which is underpinned by ethnomethodology as a philosophical approach. The study shows how older and disabled people are seen to deviate from social norms and how society responds to their situation. Future directions for aged care are suggested, and include evidence based practice, primary nursing and the evolution of a nurse practitioner focussed model of care, with adequate support for nurses.

Griffith, Emily. "Three women's formative experiences in art : Amalia Mesa-Bains, Miriam Schapiro and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith." Thesis, 2002. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/1944/1/MQ78006.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the formative experiences of three significant contemporary women artists: Amalia Mesa-Bains, Miriam Schapiro and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. Of particular interest is the question of how did their lives impact their vision of art and their place within the art world. By highlighting the similarities and differences in their artists' lives and careers, I show how art has played a formative role in their development as both women and as artists. This thesis was inspired, in part, by my course work at Concordia University. There, my professors taught me the importance of intertwining theory and practice in art education. When I moved to New York City in September of 1998 I was given the opportunity to see firsthand that fusion, at the Steinbaum Krauss Gallery where I worked. Bernice Steinbaum, the owner of the gallery, is a legendary supporter of women in America's art movement and has been for decades. The nature of my position at the gallery gave me the opportunity to engage in long conversations with the three artists I focus on in this thesis. I have not selected these artists randomly and, therefore, cannot declare any wide generalizations as a result of this work. However it is my belief that the words of these three women accurately describe the way many women artists see themselves and their role in art education

Abstract:
For two weeks now, I have wallowed in sinful luxury, rereading the six completed Jane Austen novels (especially my favorite parts), basking in the warmth and wit of her collected letters, eagerly absorbing the details of her life from her best biographies, and attentively following the arguments of her leading literary critics. I also saw the recent movie versions of Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion, falling in love with Emma Thompson and Amanda Root in quick succession, and finished off my orgy with viewings of the BBC videos of Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Pride and Prejudice. Throughout—at least when I could remember to pay attention—I had two questions in mind. What does Jane Austen have to say about people, communities, and nature? And what is the cause of her resurgent popularity? Perhaps, I allowed myself to think, the questions are related. Answering the questions proved not so simple, but I did have fun trying. Sam and I read Aunt Jane’s letter, dated 8 Jan. 1817, to her nine-year-old niece Cassy, beginning: . . . Ym raed Yssac I hsiw uoy a yppah wen raey. Ruoy xis snisuoc emac ereh yadretsey, dna dah hcae a eceip fo ekac . . . . . . I read the amusingly mordant comments she could write about her neighbors, such as the one in her letter of 3July 1813 to her brother Francis, mentioning the “respectable, worthy, clever, agreable Mr Tho. Leigh, who has just closed a good life at the age of 79, & must have died the possesser of one of the finest Estates in England & of more worthless Nephews and Neices [sic] than any other private Man in the United Kingdoms.” I read the last chapters of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion each three times. I read once again about Catherine Morland’s cruel expulsion from Northanger Abbey, and about the ill-omened trip of Fanny Price, the Bertram sisters, and the Crawfords to the Rushworth estate, Sotherton, with its seductive, if too regularly planted, wilderness. And again I was privileged to accompany Emma Woodhouse, Miss Bates, Frank Churchill, and Mr. Knightly on the tension-charged picnic to Box Hill, surely one of the highest peaks in English literature.
