Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to improve the photo-response of well-known photocatalytic material such as TiO2, which is usually only active in the UV range. The basic idea is to assemble several approaches within one device to improve the photocatalytic properties: fabrication of periodically-organised TiO2 nanostructures and their assembly with plasmonic nanoparticles. Two fabrication strategies were investigated for these purposes. The first approach consists of selective vapour phase growth. The second approach implements the use of an AAO template. In parallel, TiO2 films deposited by ALD and assembled with plasmonic gold nanoparticles are investigated. The photocatalytic measurements on various TiO2 architectures were performed in both irradiation ranges UV and Vis. A new fabrication approach of mesoporous H-TiO2 films was developed giving promising results of photocatalytic efficiency improvement in both UV and Visible ranges

Abstract:
Lucy Addison High School was an all-Black high school located in Roanoke, Virginia. All-black high schools are defined in this study as high schools that were segregated by race and attended only by Black students. Lucy Addison operated as an all-Black high school from 1928 until 1970 in two different buildings. Roanoke's secondary schools were desegregated in 1963. Addison was integrated in the fall of 1970 and closed in 1973. The purpose of the study was twofold. The primary purpose was to document the experiences of the graduates of the classes of 1963-70 of Lucy Addison High School. The secondary purpose was to determine if the supports found in the research literature about all-Black high schools prior to desegregation were present in the Lucy Addison students' experiences during the years between desegregation and integration. The supports are (a) the importance of a spiritual foundation, (b) high expectations from school administrators and teachers, and (c) parent and community support. Six common themes emerged from the interviews with participants. They were: (a) the importance of a spiritual foundation, (b) high expectations from teachers and administrators, (c) parent and community support, (d) school leadership, (e) attitudes on segregation and integration, and (f) school pride. These themes helped answer the four research questions that guided the study. After conducting interviews with the graduates, their accounts confirmed that the supports identified in the literature regarding all-Black high schools were present in their school experiences. The importance of a spiritual foundation, high expectations from teachers and administrators, and parent and community support could easily be seen in the experiences of all 16 students who attended Lucy Addison High School from 1963-1970. Upon reflection on the study, the researcher made certain recommendations for further study. The recommendations for further study revolve around the continued documentation of experiences of Lucy Addison High School students, conducting a study of Lucy Addison High School as an integrated school from 1970 to 1973, and assessing the reason why Lucy Addison High School was allowed to stay open as an integrated high school.

Bassani, Nicklas. "New targets in tumor angiogenesis to block tumor re-growth and therapeutic resistance." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/462953.

Full text
Abstract:
Antiangiogenic drugs are used clinically for treatment of different types of cancers and in the case of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are now standard first-line treatments (Rini, 2009). Nevertheless, these agents mainly serve to stabilize the disease but are not able to eliminate all tumor cells and resistance eventually develops concomitant with progression (Kerber and Folkman, 2002). Using different orthoxenograft mouse models of RCC we confirmed that inhibitors of the VEGF pathway have a therapeutic window of effectiveness but unfortunately adaptation and tumor relapse always occur. Several different mechanisms of resistance to antiangiogenics have been already described, many concerning the activation of compensatory signals that produce re-vascularization and tumor re-growth. (Bergers and Hanahan, 2008). In our study we determined that even if resistance is characterized by the up-regulation of the pro-angiogenic enzyme ECGF1 (previous data from the lab); re-vascularization does not occur, the vascular trimming is maintained by the treatment pointing to an alternative mode of adaptation. Using two different approaches, we demonstrated that PD-ECGF1 is responsible of the acquisition of resistance to anti-anigiogenics. In fact, its enzymatic inhibition as second-line treatment post resistance resulted in the arrest and stabilization of tumor growth. PD-ECGF1 inhibition did not increase the anti-vascular effect of DC101, confirming that resistance was vessel independent, but dramatically affected tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis. Considering the numerous proprieties ascribed to its final metabolite 2-deoxy-D-ribose (Ikeda et al., 2006; Bjinsdorp et al., 2008), we evaluated its role, finding that recombinant 2-deoxy-D-ribose nullified the effect of AEAC on 786O- and Ren28 tumor growth rescuing tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis, without promoting re-vascularization. Overall these findings, confirmed also in an in vitro setting, demonstrate that tumor stroma plays a minor role in this model of anti-angiogenics resistance, and that PD-ECGF1 acts mainly intracellularly supporting tumor cell proliferation and protecting from apoptosis by its enzymatic activity and final metabolite 2-deoxy-D-ribose. Using a genetic approach in which PD-ECGF1 protein expression was silence as a second line of treatment post DC101-resistance, mimicking what done pharmacologically, we confirmed and improved the anti-tumoral response described, without perceiving any doxycycline toxic effect. In fact, PD-ECGF1 genetic knock down resulted in a complete arrest of tumor progression enhancing the merely partial stabilization produce by AEAC treatment in 786O- tumor bearing mice. Unfortunately VEGFR-blockers can’t be used in vitro on cancer cells, and to verify this hypothesis we decided to mimic the final effects of anti-angiogenic treatments, finding that under nutrient deprivation conditions cancer cells significantly up-regulate PD-ECGF1 expression, and metabolizing thymidine acquired considerable growth advantages. Finally, the analysis of plasma and tissue samples of ccRCC patients from the Bellvitge Hospital confirm in a clinical set that PD-ECGF1 is exclusively found in pathologic conditions, where if highly expressed correlates with poor prognosis, suggesting that might represent a good therapeutic predictor factor. Moreover, the analysis of tissues biopsies before and after anti-angiogenic treatment revealed that whilst PD-ECGF1 treatment-induce up-regulation was a common feature, the patients that unfortunately didn’t respond showed the sharp difference, confirming PD-ECGF1 as a possible therapeutic target.

The vertical discrepancy in the zone of lateral superposition is a distortion of the original measure that is hard to correct due to the sweeping realized by the laser sensor, especially, located in the lateral extremes of the flight area. Research does a judicious evaluation of the results dedicated to the simultaneous adjustment of the block, which may result, among others, in the reduction of the vertical discrepancy. It also identifies possible biased behaviors, evaluates the existence of residues (outlier) in the set of observations and submits the criteria of statistical analysis to adjustment. The thesis studies the components and the functioning of the remote sensor or airborne laser scanner (ALS). It examines the capacities to enhance activities dedicated to the generation of points in the lighted surface. In addition, it describes precautions taken in the profiling with the ALS in relation to the used power and the possible flight altitudes from the standpoint of security to the human health. Moreover, it reveals that the measuring done with the laser sensor may assist with activities directed to the municipal management, rural survey or even, environmental survey. The Helmert isogonal is adopted in the area with the purpose of shaping the behavior of the sampled surface. In the following stage it promotes strategies that point to a mathematical function capable of estimating the parameters of internal orientation of the laser sensor when considering the issuing/receiving laser cannon directed to the nadir. In this manner, the thesis suggests that it an additional technique be added to the methods already practiced in the calibration and the registering of coordinates with the ALS that aim, above all, at reducing the influence of the residues and/or distortions that are inherent to the measuring process.

Montie, Mary L. "Where are all the gifted Black girls? Giving high school girls voice via qualitative research approach and Black feminist theory." Thesis, Wayne State University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3558200.

Full text
Abstract:

Gifted programs in the United States under-represent African American (Black) children (Phi Delta Kappan, 1992). In 1993, African-American students were under-represented by 50% in gifted education, and 60% in 1998 (Grantham & Ford, 2003). Further, some speculate that gifted education programs are the most segregated educational programs in the nation (Ford, 1995). This proves especially true for Black gifted girl in urban educational arenas, where gifted Black girls are rarely recognized. The purpose of this research was to examine the circumstances surrounding how urban black girls—identified as showing academic promise—come either to be overlooked as qualified for gifted education or seem not to take up a sense of themselves as gifted, that is they see themselves as not fitting among those who are in gifted education. Three scholarly arenas frame this study: Feminist thought and theory, with an emphasis on Black feminist thought, notions of "giftedness" and gifted education, and policies and processes for identification of gifted Black girls. Eight gifted Black girls were individually interviewed twice, three teachers were individually interviewed, and three parents were interviewed in a focus group session. Four interview guides were constructed to focus on students' perspectives of GS1 (pseudonym) and gifted education, parent strategies, and teachers' roles in the identification of these gifted Black girls. Qualitative analysis strategies (Spradley1980) were utilized for data analysis. The curriculum of the gifted programming at GS1 (pseudonym) ultimately contributed greatly not only to how girls saw themselves as gifted, but also how they understood stereotypes about young Black women. The feminist curriculum and the "feminist lens" provided in the gifted programming at GS1 provided outlets for girls' voices. Teachers interviewed not only understood the gifted Black girls' culture, but also strengthened their relationships with the girls and with their parents by presenting and enforcing clear expectations for the gifted programming. Parents interviewed not only understood their gifted daughters' uniqueness, but also the importance of their independence and security as young Black women.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article, we explore the Black Lives Matter activist Alicia Garza's Twitter usage during the month of June in 2020 with a critical discourse analysis (CDA). Our aim with the study was to examine the underlying motives and values in Garzas tweeting, and if there were any prevailing themes, in order to see if there was a difference between the discourse used for personal matters and the discourse related to her activism. To support our analysis we utilized critical theory to gain a critical reference and the two-step flow hypothesis to delve into the possible effects Garza's position as an opinion leader has on her tweeting. After processing and examining a total of 48 tweets from the month of June, through the use of coding, our analysis suggests that there are several prevalent themes that can be distinguished in her tweeting. The themes we found were personal tweets, tweets expressing solidarity, tweets urging for action, tweets exuding authority, and promotional tweets. The line between personal matters and the discourse related to her activism was found to be fluid and unable to be strictly defined.

Abstract:
This qualitative study reflects the researcher's aim to capture the oral histories of students who attended Lee M. Waid, an all-Black rural Virginian school, between 1963 and 1970. This purpose lies in the researcher's attempt to thoroughly and accurately capture a time in history after desegregation was mandated, Freedom of Choice plans were implemented or being created, and integration was occurring across the nation, Virginia, and Franklin County. This study is guided by the research question: What were the experiences of students and staff who were part of Lee M. Waid School during the years 1963 to 1970? The researcher followed the 10-step interview protocol of Creswell and Poth (2018) and adapted 15 interview questions from Johnson's (2015) dissertation The Addisonians: The Experiences of Graduates of the Classes of 1963-70 of Lucy Addison High School, An All-Black High School in Roanoke, Virginia. The interview questions were slightly adapted to suit the researcher's study to gain insight about student experiences at Waid School. The researcher purposefully selected 14 participants by looking at existing data through the use of primary documents and snowball or chain methodology. Fourteen of the participants were former students of Waid School and two were former faculty members of Franklin County Public Schools. The exploration of student experiences during desegregation is vital to preserving the history, legacy, and influence of Black education.
Doctor of Education
The purpose of this study was to shed light on the experiences of Black students during desegregation in Franklin County, Virginia. The researcher aimed to capture the oral histories of students who attended Lee M. Waid, an all-Black rural Virginian school, between 1963 and 1970. The voices of the participants and their stories add to the breadth of literature and body of knowledge on the desegregation process. Before the completion of this study, the perspectives and experiences of participants had not been formally documented. A brief review of the literature on the history of Black education at the national, state, and local levels provides essential background information for historical context leading to the desegregation of United States public schools. An overview of southern segregated schools provides insight into the supports and values held within all-Black schools before and after the initiation of the desegregation of schools. The examination of student experiences during desegregation provides critical insight on America's pathway toward equity in education, the effect of desegregation from the student perspective, and the remnants of segregation that still exist today in American public schools. Through a qualitative case study, the researcher conducted interviews with former students and stakeholders of Lee M. Waid. The researcher reviewed primary documents such as yearbooks, newspaper articles, and other documents provided by participants. Through interviews with participants, (a) high expectations from teachers and administrators, (b) parent and community support, (c) familial attitudes or beliefs about segregation and integration, (d) school pride, and (e) each participant meaningfully reflected on their individual school experiences during desegregation. The themes identified in the study are similar to those identified by other researchers who have explored the initial desegregation of schools and the supports and values held within segregated schools. One of the recommendations of this study encourages additional research and documentation of student experiences during desegregation. The exploration of student experiences during desegregation is vital to preserving the history, legacy, and influence of Black education.

Abstract:
Herein, we present a quasi-living Negishi-type catalyst-transfer polycondensation of a zinc–organic DTSbased monomer which provides an access to narrowly distributed poly(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:20,30-d]silole (PDTS) with controlled molecular weight. The synthesis of well-defined all-conjugated diblock copolymers containing a PDTS block was accomplished by a combination of Kumada and Negishi catalyst-transfer polycondensations (KCTP and NCTP, respectively). Particularly, it was shown that living P3HT chains obtained by KCTP of magnesium–organic thiophene-based monomer efficiently initiate NCTP of zinc–organic DTS-based monomer. The purity of the DTS-based monomer was found to be a crucial factor for achieving a clean chain-growth polymerization process. A combination of physico-chemical methods was used to prove the success of the block copolymerization.

This project investigates the Alternative Right's racial discourse on Twitter. It examines to what extent the Alt-Right indicates a fundamental break from "colorblind racism", the United State's dominant racial discourse. Does the Alt-Right's ascendency and project signify a new period of racial formation? Analyzing tweets from three celebrity Alt-Right figures, Richard Spencer, David Duke, and Jared Taylor, this project finds that the Alt-Right does not indicate a new period of racial formation. Rather, they demonstrate an extremist development to that rhetoric.

Jackson, Antoine Lennell. ""All Blacks Vote the Same?": Assessing Predictors of Black American Political Participation and Partisanship." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4693.

Full text
Abstract:
The politics of Blacks are stereotypically assumed to be the same and share the same race-based root, be it disenfranchisement or solidarity. Given the recent jump in Black political participation and the seemingly race-based and partisan nature "the Black vote" holds, it is essential to investigate what factors drive Black voter turnout as well as what factors contribute to the partisan nature of Black voters. Most other studies of political opinion, turnout, and party preference only consider comparable demographic groups such as men versus women or Blacks versus Whites. This study examines partisan preference and participation only among Black Americans. The data used here come from the American National Election Survey (ANES) 1984, 1996, and 2008 Pre- and Post-Election Survey, election years that coincided with peaks and lows of Black voter turnout since the Civil Rights Movement. Findings indicate that Black Democrats report higher voter turnout than Black non-Democrats, and younger Blacks and those who opposed abortion were less likely to vote. Also, results suggest that although Black partisanship can be predicted by gender, abortion stance, and age, partisanship is largely not a product of demographics or political stances based on how little variance these models account; rather, Black partisanship may be explained by aspects that go beyond these usual determinants, measures, and proxies. Implications of this study show that non-Democratic Blacks were political available to other parties, and it warrants a further investigation into Black partisanship.

Cosand, Kalistah Quilla. "Black and Blue and Read All Over: News Framing and the Coverage of Crime." PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1793.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the representation of crime in the news in relation to expressed emotion and intention for future action. Episodic and thematic framing (Iyengar, 1991) and narrative processing (Singer & Bluck, 2001) served as the theoretical foundations of this study and helped examine how scripted news stories involving crime influence levels of fear, anger, and empathy in individuals, and how these emotions subsequently affect behaviors. To measure these framing effects, an experimental manipulation was employed using three conceptually different news stories all involving gun-related crimes. One news story utilized an episodic format, while the other two stories used a thematic format (one positive and one negative). Emotional responses, levels of narrative engagement, policy support, perceived risk of victimization, and pro-social behavioral intentions were measured, all based on exposure to the specific type of news frame. The results of this study indicated that while types of news frames did not have a direct effect on readers' emotions, there was a significant relationship between emotions and future actions. For example, fear, anger, and empathy were significant predictors of perceived risk of victimization, policy support, and pro-social behavioral intentions, respectively. These findings contribute to the understanding of the role emotions play in predicting behavior, both within and beyond the scope of message framing.

Abstract:
By analyzing two court cases, this dissertation examines the perceived crisis of Democracy in the late 1960s in the United States and the reactions of state institutions to the attack by political violence. Both trials against icons of the Black Power movement, People v. Huey Newton in 1968, People v. Angela Davis beginning in 1970, became a focal point of the overall social debate on justice and basic democratic rights. An analysis of the interaction of all of the protagonists involved in court, the narratives that were brought forward in the courtroom and in the press, and the defendants' solidarity committees reveal a performative reconstruction of the American rule of law and American democracy. This was negotiated under concepts such as the "fair trial" and the relationship between African-American citizens and the police and the ability of the criminal justice system to guarantee justice for all its citizens. In the trials, the inherent racism in American society was identified as the greatest obstacle between previous legal practice and such a renegotiated understanding of justice, making visible and deconstructing the white normality of the judicial system assumed as such. In the performative re-construction and reinterpretation of the actors in court, categories such race, class, and gender shifted, allowing the Defendants to achieve self-assertion as equal legal subjects. In addition, a jury selection procedure was established that explicitly recognized bias. This development undermined the narrative and performative "threat" which had previously been publicly constructed by politicians, and a security discourse initiated by the state was not able to assert itself throughout society.

Abstract:
Historically, black women have always played key roles in the struggle for liberation. A critical determinant of black women’s activism was the influence of both race and gender, as these factors were immutably married to their subjectivities. African American women faced the socio-cultural and structural challenge of sexism prevalent in the United States and also in the black community. My study examines the life of Fulani Sunni Ali, her role in black liberation, her role as the Minister of Information for the Provisional Government for the Republic of New Africa, and her communication strategies. In doing so, I evaluate a black female revolutionary nationalist’s discursive negotiation of her identity during the Black Power and Black Nationalist Movement. I also use womanist criticism to analyze interviews with Sunni Ali and archival data in her possession to reveal the complexity and diversity of black women’s roles and activities in a history of black resistance struggle and to locate black female presence and agency in Black Power. The following study more generally analyzes black female revolutionary nationalists’ roles, activities, and discursive identity negotiation during the Black Power Movement. By examining Sunni Ali’s life and the way she struggled against racism and patriarchy to advocate for Black Power and Black Nationalism, I demonstrate how her activism was a continuation of a tradition of black women’s resistance, and I extrapolate her forms of black women’s activism extant in the movement.

Abstract:
A phase-locked loop commonly known as PLL is widely used in communication systems. A PLL is used in radio, telecommunications, modulation and demodulation. It can be used for clock generation, clock recovery from data signals, clock distribution and as a frequency synthesizer. Most electronic circuits encounter the problem of the clock skew. The clock Skew for a synchronous circuit is defined as the difference in the time of arrival between two sequentially adjacent registers. The registers and the flip-flops do not receive the clock at the same time. The clock signal in a normal circuit is generated with an oscillator, oscillator produces error, due to which there is a distortion from the expected time interval. The PLLs are used to address the problem. A phase-locked loop works to ensure the time interval seen at the clocks of various registers and the flip-flops match the time intervals generated by the oscillator. PLLs are trivial and an essential part of the micro-processors. Traditional PLLs are designed to work as an analog building block, but it is difficult to integrate them on a digital chip. Analog PLLs are less affected by noise and process variations. Digital PLLs allow faster lock time and are used for clock generation in high performance microprocessors. A digital PLL has more advantages as compared to an analog PLL. Digital PLLs are more flexible in terms of calibration, programability, stability and they are more immune to noise. The cost of a digital PLL is less as compared to its analog counter part. Digital PLLs are analogous to the analog PLLs, but the components used for implementing a digital PLL are digital. A digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) is utilized instead of a voltage controlled oscillator. A time to digital converter(TDC) is used instead of the phase frequency detector. The analog filter is replaced with a digital low pass filter. Phase-locked loop is a very good research topic in electronics. It covers many topics in the electrical systems such as communication theory, control systems and noise characterization. This project work describes the design and simulation of miscellaneous blocks of an all-digital PLL for the 60 GHz band. The reference frequency is 54 MHz and the DCO output frequency is 2 GHz to 3 GHz in a state-of the-art 65 nm process, with 1 V supply voltage. An all-digital PLL is composed of digital components such as a low pass filter, a sigma delta modulator and a fractional N /N +1 divider for low voltage and high speed operation. The all-digital PLL is implemented in MATLAB and then the filter, a sigma delta modulator and a fractional N /N +1 divider are implemented in MATLAB and Verilog-A code. The sub blocks i.e full adder, D flip-flop, a digital to digital converter, a main counter, a prescalar and a swallow counter are implemented in the transistor level using CMOS 65nm technology and functionality of each block is verified.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to take advance of the slowdown of the construction sector in recent years, in order to achieve a qualitative leap in the design and implement system of the vertical grids in multifamily residential buildings in Catalonia at the present time and with the available technology. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is divided into two steps: first, to determine whether it is feasible to reverse the current craftsmanship of the spinal column of the buildings and, second, to set the design bases towards a “facility core” industrialization. Previously, it has been necessary to analyse the evolution of the spinal column over time, and to develop a flows characterization of the flows around typological and regulations changes in multifamily buildings. The thesis deduces, it was determined that the “facility core” has to be a disruptive component which approach extending beyond industrialisation of spinal column, to respond to the current social and environmental claims: (1) improving the environmental performance building, (2) increasing the versatility, flexibility and quality of the spinal column of the building, and (3) eliminating the maintenance inconvenience of replacement facilities tasks during the operation phase of the building. In order to encourage the industry interest to materialise this product as well as make it attractive for technicians, installers and users; a strategy has been designed based on four drivers of change which make the conception of the “facility core” as a holistic element: (1) one single element with different “flow channels” rather than an amount of small elements; (2) a modular element marketable through a tightened brochure but enough wide to suit most of building designs; (3) an element that establishes a centralized system and improves economic and environmental performance life cycle of the building; and (4) a high durability element that takes advantage of the intrinsic benefits industrialized products. The culmination of this study is the design of a prototype of ultra high performance concrete which proves that technology and market are ready for aim the “facility core”.

Abstract:
This study explores protean and boundaryless career attitudes in a sample of black British knowledge intensive workers. Changes in the organisational climate to more flexible project based working have affected the way in which careers develop. It has been reported that employees need to possess certain skills to help them succeed in the modern employment climate (Arthur and Rousseau 1996). The main research theory that has attempted to explain such career changes and the acquisition of specialist skills include the boundaryless career which includes both intelligent and protean career competencies (Greenhaus et al 2004). The purpose of the current study is to investigate the extent to which black African and black Caribbean workers careers are boundaryless and to investigate the nature and type of career boundaries and barriers faced. The current research addresses some of the criticisms of boundaryless career research highlighted by Sullivan et al (1998, 1999, 2009). These criticisms include an apparent exaggeration of the pervasiveness of boundaryless and protean careers and a lack of research investigating the applicability of these career theories to professional, minority group members. Thirty two knowledge workers were interviewed to understand the nature and type of career boundaries faced. A quantitative questionnaire developed by Briscoe et al (2006) was also used to investigate the extent to which black knowledge workers are protean and boundaryless in their career outlook. The findings from the interviews highlight education and family as career enablers as they help participants navigate potential career barriers. The lack of career mentors, racial discrimination and inadequate career advice at an early age were perceived as career boundaries. Results also point to a perceptual difference between career boundaries and barriers which researchers such as Sullivan et al (2004) saught to clarify. The findings suggest that career boundaries are more flexible and less permeable and career barriers are more rigid and difficult to overcome. Briscoe et al (2006) boundaryless and protean scales and were completed by 187 participants. It was found that management consultants, those aged 41-50 and those with higher levels of education were found to be the most boundaryless. The main theoretical contribution is that “attached boundaryless” is displayed. Attached boundarylessness occurred as participants preferred the security of remaining in an organisation, but enjoyed being self directed and boundaryless within their organisations by working collaboratively.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the lives, accomplishments, and struggles of the black community in Norfolk, Virginia, between the years of 1861 and 1884, from the black perspective.;The integration of documents with statistics to uncover the mentalite of blacks is the focus of this study's research. The black community of this period was not always reactive, but active in determining its own fate. Even during slavery, Norfolk's blacks took an active role in their destiny through participation in the Underground Railroad.;This study suggests that blacks strove diligently to work with, and in some cases, conciliate, the white oligarchy. Unfortunately, their efforts met with resistance and defeat. Despite these difficulties, the black community pulled together to assist its members as the whites unified to subjugate them.;The results of the investigation suggest that had blacks continued to be politically active, Norfolk would have had an economically prosperous black community. Instead, the introduction of Jim Crow laws served to oppress blacks economically and produce a sense of hopelessness, socially and politically.

Abstract:
The thesis examines the O.J. Simpson murder trial and analyzes the racial narratives that affected its outcome and the way it is perceived by the American public. By examining four books about the trial written by lawyers who served on the case, the analysis focuses on how race functions within each of the reconstructed narratives, as well as within the framework of the U.S. criminal justice system. The author argues that racial narratives affect how and why people can see the same event differently, a prime example of which is the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Representations of Mark Fuhrman, his role in the O.J. Simpson trial, and how these are affected by racial narratives are also discussed. The author concludes that the O.J. Simpson murder trial presented an opportunity in which issues concerning race, race relations, and ideologies about race could be openly discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Black shales are sedimentary rocks with a high content of organic carbon, which leads to a dark grayish to black color. Due to their potential to contain oil or gas, black shales are of great interest for the support of the worldwide energy supply. An integrated seismic investigation of the Lower Palaeozoic black shales was carried out at the Danish island Bornholm to locate the shallow-lying Alum Shale layer and its surrounding formations and to characterize its potential as a source rock. Therefore, two seismic experiments at a total of three crossing profiles were carried out in October 2010 and in June 2012 in the southern part of the island. Two different active measurements were conducted with either a weight drop source or a minivibrator. Additionally, the ambient noise field was recorded at the study location over a time interval of about one day, and also a laboratory analysis of borehole samples was carried out. The seismic profiles were positioned as close as possible to two scientific boreholes which were used for comparative purposes. The seismic field data was analyzed with traveltime tomography, surface wave inversion and seismic interferometry to obtain the P-wave and S-wave velocity models of the subsurface. The P-wave velocity models which were determined for all three profiles clearly locate the Alum Shale layer between the Komstad Limestone layer on top and the Læså Sandstone Formation at the base of the models. The black shale layer has P-wave velocities around 3 km/s which are lower compared to the adjacent formations. Due to a very good agreement of the sonic log and the vertical velocity profiles of the two seismic lines, which are directly crossing the borehole where the sonic log was conducted, the reliability of the traveltime tomography is proven. A correlation of the seismic velocities with the content of organic carbon is an important task for the characterization of the reservoir properties of a black shale formation. It is not possible without calibration but in combination with a full 2D tomographic image of the subsurface it gives the subsurface distribution of the organic material. The S-wave model obtained with surface wave inversion of the vibroseis data of one of the profiles images the Alum Shale layer also very well with S-wave velocities around 2 km/s. Although individual 1D velocity models for each of the source positions were determined, the subsurface S-wave velocity distribution is very uniform with a good match between the single models. A really new approach described here is the application of seismic interferometry to a really small study area and a quite short time interval. Also new is the selective procedure of only using time windows with the best crosscorrelation signals to achieve the final interferograms. Due to the small scale of the interferometry even P-wave signals can be observed in the final crosscorrelations. In the laboratory measurements the seismic body waves were recorded for different pressure and temperature stages. Therefore, samples of different depths of the Alum Shale were available from one of the scientific boreholes at the study location. The measured velocities have a high variance with changing pressure or temperature. Recordings with wave propagation both parallel and perpendicular to the bedding of the samples reveal a great amount of anisotropy for the P-wave velocity, whereas the S-wave velocity is almost independent of the wave direction. The calculated velocity ratio is also highly anisotropic with very low values for the perpendicular samples and very high values for the parallel ones. Interestingly, the laboratory velocities of the perpendicular samples are comparable to the velocities of the field experiments indicating that the field measurements are sensitive to wave propagation in vertical direction. The velocity ratio is also calculated with the P-wave and S-wave velocity models of the field experiments. Again, the Alum Shale can be clearly separated from the adjacent formations because it shows overall very low vP/vS ratios around 1.4. The very low velocity ratio indicates the content of gas in the black shale formation. With the combination of all the different methods described here, a comprehensive interpretation of the seismic response of the black shale layer can be made and the hydrocarbon source rock potential can be estimated.

Pruneau, Leigh Ann 1957. "All the time is work time: Gender and the task system on antebellum lowcountry rice plantations." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282532.

Abstract:
This is an analysis of the task system, the primary form of labor organization used by South Carolina and Georgia lowcountry rice planters. It examines the labor process of rice field hands, analyzes the extent to which gender shaped enslaved men and women's experiences of tasking, and explores some of the ramifications of task work on field women's lives. Conventional interpretations of the task system claim that it provided slaves with more autonomy, control, and opportunities for individual initiative than gang labor did. In contrast, this study finds that tasking was a multifaceted labor regime whose differences from gang labor were less pronounced than previous scholarship suggests. Specifically, structural, seasonal, and managerial constraints profoundly limited slaves' ability to control their work pace and to independently manage their work routines. As a result, slaves' access to own time and autonomy could be quite limited. Significantly, field hands did not experience these limits equally. Since planters did not adhere to one uniform model of rice cultivation, task assignments and labor routines varied across plantations. This heterogenous organization of task labor meant that slaves' ability to realize tasking's potential for greater slave autonomy was disproportionate across plantation boundaries. Gender also affected slaves' access to own time. Field women's control over the length of their work day and hence over access to own time was particularly circumscribed. The origins of these limits can be found in how planters organized their labor force and allocated field work. Given these constraints, slaves clearly did not gain own time easily. Nevertheless, slaves persevered in their quest for any or more own time by trying to circumvent prescribed work routines. Historians have touted slave family assistance as one of the most important of their strategies. While true, such aid was complex, circumscribed, and sometimes gendered. Finally, I link these labor and aid patterns to field women's reproductive histories and find that they help explain the region's high rate of slave neonatal mortality. These findings provide compelling evidence that we need to lower our assessment of the relative benefits putatively enjoyed by slaves who worked in a task regime.
