Abstract:
Abstract The objective of the article is to deconstruct the notion of publisher through the lens of the episteme of professionalism and provide a statistical overview of mainstream and marginal book publishers in Latvia. The statistical overview is based on an alternative, experimental approach, in which publishers are grouped by the legal register they are registered in as juridical persons and the output of each group is analysed. This approach is selected to profile publishers in a context where economic indicators or other means by which to analyse publishers are not available. The results provide an insight into the diversity of those who publish books in Latvia as well as give an overview of the characteristics and patterns of their publishing practices.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present an outlook on current publishing models and the way they relate to each other. The first part offers an overview of the traditional trade model in its present form and looks at the main alternatives, with a particular emphasis on crowdfunding. Can examples of subscription models be found from the past? Particular attention is given to the crowdfunding publisher Unbound in order to analyse how its hybrid business model fits into the field of contemporary cultural production. The final part looks at the dynamics between traditional trade publishers, Unbound, and the wider cultural ecosystem, exploring how different models can operate beyond direct competition, benefiting from each other’s presence in the market in the common quest to keep books alive.

Abstract:
Around the world, legacy news publishers are suffering from the deep decline of revenues and face the challenge of survival. As the situation continues, conflicts between online portal and news producers are also intensifying. Under these circumstances, Naver, the biggest internet portal in Korea, and several Korean news publishers have begun to seek a new breakthrough—media joint ventures. The joint venture between online portals and news publishers is a unique collaboration model that has not been found in other countries. This study investigates the motivation of the media joint ventures and evaluates the performance. To do this, the study suggests the sustainability of media joint ventures. This model consists of five major categories of media joint ventures’ performances, based on their strategic, financial, learning, managerial, and social influence aspects. After conducting an in-depth interview of media joint ventures and a focus group interview with nine experts from the media industry and business scholarships, the study shows that the media joint ventures could be a new alternative for both portals and news publishers. However, there were some differences in the sustainability evaluation of the operating body of the joint venture and outside experts.

Abstract:
PurposeHow to obtain a list of the 100 largest scientific publishers sorted by journal count? Existing databases are unhelpful as each of them inhere biased omissions and data quality flaws. This paper tries to fill this gap with an alternative approach.Design/methodology/approachThe content coverages of Scopus, Publons, DOAJ and SherpaRomeo were first used to extract a preliminary list of publishers that supposedly possess at least 15 journals. Second, the publishers' websites were scraped to fetch their portfolios and, thus, their “true” journal counts.FindingsThe outcome is a list of the 100 largest publishers comprising 28.060 scholarly journals, with the largest publishing 3.763 journals, and the smallest carrying 76 titles. The usual “oligopoly” of major publishing companies leads the list, but it also contains 17 university presses from the Global South, and, surprisingly, 31 predatory publishers that together publish 4.606 journals.Research limitations/implicationsAdditional data sources could be used to mitigate remaining biases; it is difficult to disambiguate publisher names and their imprints; and the dataset carries a non-uniform distribution, thus risking the omission of data points in the lower range.Practical implicationsThe dataset can serve as a useful basis for comprehensive meta-scientific surveys on the publisher-level.Originality/valueThe catalogue can be deemed more inclusive and diverse than other ones because many of the publishers would have been overlooked if one had drawn from merely one or two sources. The list is freely accessible and invites regular updates. The approach used here (webscraping) has seldomly been used in meta-scientific surveys.

Abstract:
This PhD submission constitutes a novel and accompanying critical commentary. My novel Nobody Killed Her provides an alternative history of the assassination of Pakistan's only female Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto. The thesis questions the choices I made in order to develop the writing of this novel and the decisions I took in order for it to reach its readers. I discuss the issues of creative integrity and the role of the publisher as an enabler, and as a modern day censor. I examine the role of literary influences and publishing pressures on the multi-layered and shifting strains of the creative process and explore fiction as a powerful tool for communicating the paradoxical state of modern Pakistani women, which my novel draws upon. Accordingly, my research narrative is interspersed with personal vignettes that helped shape my writing. Reflecting upon the role of memory, history and politics, and literary influences that shape our writing, I try to interrogate the ‘flash-bulb’ moments of inspiration and argue that creative writing is actually a series of complex thought processes that shape our consciousness. I have also, during the compilation of this essay, looked critically at the role of the publisher in shaping an author’s creativity and the author’s desire for publication in influencing his or her creative choices. I have examined the role of the audience, by asking who the writer is writing for, concluding that the creative journey is more important than the destination i.e., the culmination of the writing into a published form. I conclude by contending that creative writing is above all communication, not just with the reader but also with one’s self. It is about self- expression and therefore must remain true to the self.

Abstract:
Internet allows authors to publish in a few clicks without passing through the necessary phase of the Publishing House, as it has been the case so far. Previously authors had no alternative but publishing at their own expense, most of the time quite expensive. Thanks to the net, they benefit today from various spaces: Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Amazon, is an auto-edition platform that encounters a phenomenal success ; KDP has reshuffled the norm bringing into light totally unknown writers, with no real writing experience nor particular ambition, and made them visible on the net, opening doors of a world that was kept accessible to a few lucky ones before. Our study aims at better understanding the phenomenon of alternative edition that is coming up to force, and to understand who exactly these authors investing in KDP are, their motivations and their publications. More broadly, we aim at demonstrating that these new forms of publications offer different literature, equally entertaining, certainly cheaper, not always present in libraries but easily accessible online

Abstract:
During the last years of his life, Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459), former Apostolic Secretary and Chancellor of Florence, was working on a long text that he characterized, in a letter written in 1458, as lacking a well-defined structure. This was most probably his history of the people of Florence (Historiae Florentini populi, the title given in Jacopo’s dedication copy to Frederick of Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino), revised and published posthumously by Poggio’s son, Jacopo Bracciolini (1442-1478). Contrary to what is often assumed, Poggio’s treatise was not a continuation, nor even a complement, to Leonardo Bruni’s (1370-1444) official history of Florence. It concentrates on the most recent history of Florence from the fourteenth-century conflicts between Florence and Milan through Florentine expansion in Tuscany and finally reaching the mid-fifteenth century. This article will study the genesis and fortune of the work in the context of Poggio’s literary output and the manuscript evidence from the mid-fifteenth century until the first printed edition of the Latin-language text by G.B. Recanati in 1715.

This chapter discusses the three publishers of the textbooks this book treats: Bob Jones University, Abeka Books, and Accelerated Christian Education. It addresses when and why they began to publish and the controversies and legal challenges they subsequently generated. It explores the history of their sponsoring educational institutions and their stated missions. It places them in the context of Christian opposition to public education as it developed in response to the teaching of evolution, the Supreme Court decisions of the 1960s prohibiting prayer and Bible reading in public schools, and, most importantly, desegregation. These three publishers have offered an alternative “Christian” education since the early 1970s.

This chapter provides the reader with an understanding of what kind of information on yoga was available in the early twentieth century, how it might be found, and who was responsible for its content. Significant forums for information circulating about yoga included journals of those who shared interests in alternative spiritualties, as well as book-length volumes translating ‘Eastern’ religious texts. Perhaps the most influential network in this subject area had at its centre Watkins Bookshop on Charring Cross Road, which served as a hub for all kinds of networking, including consultation on publishing decisions. The process of publishing popular books on yoga is explored as well as the personal influence of Gerald Yorke, Paul Brunton and Hari Prasad Shastri of the Shanti Sadan.

Abstract:
In contrast to classical stories, fairy tales and novels, that are characterized by a “closed” structure and do not require any additional intervention of the recipient, there are literary works that are based on a special author- literary text-recipient relationship. The aim of the research is to examine the specific features and forms of these alternative literary texts for children in which the reader is the decisive factor in creating the course of the story and its ending. This paper analyzes the collections of stories: Stories of Almost Everything and Pocket Stories by Igor Kolarov, Mysteries of Ginkgo Street, Mysterious Stories and Secret Skills of Marta Smart by Uroš Petrović, history quest novels: Race through Rome, Minotaur’s Maze, Tomb of Terror: Egyptians, Medieval Mayhem by Timothy Knapman, math quest novels: The Cavern of Clues, The Planet of Puzzles, Mansion of Mazes and Museum of Mysteries by David Glover and adventurous novels: Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey, Underground Kingdom and The Forbidden Castle by Edward Packard, The Abominable Snowman and The Mystery of the Maya by Raymond Montgomery, The Throne of Zeus by Deborah Lerme Goodman, By Balloon to Sahara by Douglas Terman and The Secret of the Pyramids by Richard Brightfield. Publishers and authors have labeled this relatively new class of books as “literary adventures,” “history quests,” “stories for finishing, fooling around, tickling, and who knows what else” and have warned readers that they are responsible for what will be embodied in their receptive act.

Abstract:
Textbook is still the most indispensable part of many educational systems. Therefore, having accurate information on the attributes which attract its consumers is of utmost importance for the textbook market analysts, writers and publishers. To this end, this chapter first questions the methodology of the current textbook market needs analysis and then suggests and employs conjoint methodology as the alternative for this purpose. To illustrate the value of this approach, the responses of 450 participants to 32 profile cards based on a scale from 1 to 7 underwent conjoint analysis. The results provided a more comprehensive picture of the participants' preferences for each of the surveyed attributes and their accompanying levels. The findings are especially valuable for three groups: for textbook market analysts who might consider using this methodology in their future investigations and for the authors and publishers who might use the findings in planning and publishing books for this research context.

Abstract:
The alternative black press grew in popularity and editorial stridency in the 1960s, prompting commercial publishers to try to steer the Black Power Movement into acceptable political channels. Alternative publications included student newspapers, leftist political journals, and organizational newspapers for Black Nationalist groups. The Black Panther and Muhammad Speaks claimed circulations that rivaled the largest commercial newspapers. Alternative editors questioned the value of integration, endorsed armed self-defense, and embraced a Marxist critique of American capitalism and empire. Commercial publishers attempted to advise young sit-in protesters and then tried to define Black Power as the effective use of political power. By the late 1960s, though, they almost universally condemned the Black Panther Party and other militant activists, fearing unneeded provocations would erase significant legislative achievements.

Abstract:
Since the modes of publishing content have changed in the digital age, OA practice could be an effective response towards the challenges generated by the ongoing technological advancements. It could respond to the competing concerns of copyright protection and equitable access to information, simultaneously. This final chapter analyzes the interconnections between commercial publisher and author interests and argues that OARs could be considered as an instrument towards common benefits. In the context of continuous technological growth, OA could also be seen as an alternative instrument for the protection of intellectual property to facilitate modern or digital publishing and benefit publisher and intellectual creator, as well. Traditionally, commercial publishers are gatekeepers of the standards of merit of academic works even though they get almost all of the profits. However, while they rely on academics' expertise to remain commercially viable, they do not pay for this expertise, appropriately. In contemporary days it is feasible for authors to not rely on commercial publishers. It is, therefore, in the interests of commercial publishers that academics keep publishing with them. As gatekeepers of standards of merit, they can benefit the academic world and remain viable themselves. This claim will be substantiated with examples of relevant licensing forms and other initiatives of OA.

Abstract:
Scholarly publishing has become a multibillion-dollar industry, increasingly dominated by a few large publishers. This oligopoly exerts tremendous influence through its control of the journals and ranking systems that can make or break both scholarly careers and library budgets. Valorizing Anglo-American models of scholarship, the oligopoly undermines alternative models of excellence. Offering concrete strategies, this chapter suggests ways for scholars to transform an ecosystem currently centered around corporate juggernauts. By acting collectively to benefit fellow scholar communities, scholars can realize alternatives to a hegemonizing oligopoly.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: Labeling a journal as “predatory” can do great damage to the journal and the individuals that have contributed to it. This paper considers whether the predatory classification has outlived its usefulness and what might replace it. Background: With the advent of open access publishing, the term “predatory” has increasingly been used to identify academic journals, conferences, and publishers whose practices are driven by profit or self-interest rather than the advancement of science. Absent clear standards for determining what is predatory and what is not, concerns have been raised about the misuse of the label. Methodology: Mixed methods: A brief review of the literature, some illustrative case studies, and conceptual analysis. Contribution: The paper provides recommendations for reducing the impact of illegitimate journals. Findings: Current predatory classifications are being assigned with little or no systematic research and virtually no accountability. The predatory/not predatory distinction does not accommodate alternative journal missions. Recommendations for Researchers: The distinction between legitimate and illegitimate journals requires consideration of each journal’s mission. To serve as a useful guide, a process akin to that used for accrediting institutions needs to be put in place. Impact on Society: Avoiding unnecessary damage to the careers of researchers starting out. Future Research: Refining the initial classification scheme proposed in the paper. Abstract:
Text interpretation often requires common sense knowledge and reasoning. A convenient tool for developing methods of common sense reasoning are special sets of challenge problems whose interpretation requires sophisticated reasoning. An interesting example is a recently published data set called Triangle Choice of Plausible Alternatives (Triangle-COPA), which contains 100 multiple-choice problems that test the interpretation of social scenarios. Each problem includes a statement and two alternatives. The task is to identify the more plausible alternative. For processing Triangle-COPA data we use SemETAP, a general purpose semantic analyzer. We implement the full scenario of NL understanding starting from NL texts and not from manually composed simplified logical formulas, which is a common practice in logic-based approaches to common sense reasoning. We produce Enhanced Semantic Structures of the statement and both alternatives and check which alternative manifests more semantic agreement with the statement in terms of inferences.

Abstract:
A revised ASME PCC-1 “Guidelines for Pressure Boundary Bolted Joint Assembly” has recently been published and includes several new appendices. Among those is a new Appendix F “Alternatives to Legacy Tightening Sequence/Pattern”, which outlines several alternative bolt tightening patterns that may save joint assembly time and result in a more uniform preload when compared with the traditional tightening pattern for certain applications. This paper outlines the background laboratory research that went into the justification or development of many of these procedures and provides insight through referenced publications and descriptions of where these methods have been successfully applied in industry. The cautions noted in the appendix are also examined in more detail to explain the basis and consequence.

Abstract:
This paper describes actions being taken by the ASME (formerly the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants (OM Code) Subgroup on Pumps (ISTB) to revise pump test requirements to be more clearly stated and provide more flexibility in performance of tests. Specifically, this paper addresses two aspects of pump test requirements that are in the process of being changed. • Instrumentation requirements for measurement of hydraulic parameters (approved by ISTB subgroup). • Variance around the fixed reference value for establishing pump-test conditions (approved by ASME and published in the 2012 Edition of the OM Code). The OM Code changes discussed in this paper are currently in various stages of approval and endorsement. Therefore, the information provided in this paper is subject to change as a result of the OM Code approval and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) endorsement processes. "Canabinoids as a therapeutic alternative in refractory epilepsy." In XIII Congresso Paulista de Neurologia. Zeppelini Editorial e Comunicação, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5327/1516-3180.554.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Epilepsy is characterized by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain that generate neuronal hyperexcitability and hypersynchrony. In the last years, pharmacological strategies have been efficient in the control of epileptic seizures of approximately 80% of patients, however, there are still refractory cases. Objective: To elucidate new forms of epilepsy treatment with cannabinoids. Design: Systematic Review performed at Centro Universitário Atenas – Paracatu – Minas Gerais. Methods: Literature review performed in the SciELO and PubMed databases, with the following terms: epilepsy and cannabidiol. Five papers, published from 2017 to 2020, written in English or Portuguese, were selected. Review: Epileptic seizures affect conscience, motor, sensory, and cognitive functions. The treatment with available antiepileptic drugs does not display a complete therapeutic efficiency, as it is still observed the presence of refractory patients. In this context, the cannabidiol (CBD), by interfering in the information flow between neurons, acts therapeutically preventing overload. In the central nervous system, CBD acts in the CB1 receptors, present in GABAergic inhibitory neurons and glutamatergic excitatory neurons. Evidence from an electronic research performed in 2015, with 117 parents of children with refractory epilepsy that used cannabidiol, displayed that seizures were reduced by 85%, including 14% with total suppression. Conclusion: The studies show that CBD, by acting with specific neuronal receptors, decreases cerebral hyperexcitability. Therefore, this therapeutic alternative may improve the physical and emotional well-being of refractory epileptics.

Full text
Abstract:
Section 388 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) amended the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) to grant the U.S. Department of the Interior (USDOI) discretionary authority to issue leases, easements, or rights-of-way for activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) that produce or support production, transportation, or transmission of energy from sources other than oil and gas, except for where activities are already otherwise authorized in other applicable law (e.g., the Deepwater Port Act of 1974 (33 U.S.C. 1501 et seq.), the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Act of 1980 (42 U.S.C. 9101 et seq.)) [1]. This authority was delegated to the Minerals Management Service (MMS), which was charged with developing regulations intended to encourage orderly, safe, and environmentally responsible development of alternative energy resources and alternate use of facilities on the OCS. MMS published its Alternative Energy/Alternate Use proposed rule in the Federal Register in July 2008 for public comment and held a series of public workshops to discuss the proposed regulations. The final regulations were submitted to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (USOMB) on November 3, 2008 for clearance. In advance of final regulations, MMS announced an interim policy in November 2007 to authorize offshore data collection and technology testing activities in Federal waters. This measure was designed to allow developers to jumpstart data collection activities in support of potential future alternative energy development once regulations are in place. MMS has worked very closely with its State and Federal counterparts in implementing the interim policy, which has progressed most expeditiously on the Atlantic Coast. The interim policy is in effect until the MMS promulgates final rules. Beyond the MMS leasing process, several other Federal entities are involved in the permitting and licensing of alternative energy in the offshore environment, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), and the Federal Aviation Administration (USFAA), among others. This paper will discuss the history of MMS’ program and policy development for offshore alternative energy activities; the steps taken to arrive at final regulations; as well as note the other regulatory bodies involved in the authorization of these activities in U.S. Federal waters.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rolling Stream Trails (RST) model introduces new interpretation of photographic data of the cavitation process in an eccentric journal bearing gap. It stipulates a 3-D flow structure for transition from the Filled Fluid Film (FFF) to a cross-void fluid transportation process. The transition starts as a two-component composite rupture front and becomes an Adhered Film (AF) that is masked by rolled-on stream trails, which are drawn from the rupture front. The AF moves with the journal surface across the void to feed the FFF at the formation boundary. The rupture front comprises a first component of periodic streamers separated by a second component of interspersing wet pockets. Olsson’s Equation for flow continuity relative to a moving cavitation boundary (OEM) [1] yields a moving speed of the rupture front that is proportional to the reciprocal of the width fraction of the wet pockets multiplied into the FFF pressure gradient. Both rupture and formation boundaries move with finite speeds. The formation boundary speed in RST is determined by overall mass conservation in the bearing gap. RST formulation of the cavitation of a journal bearing fluid film yields an initial value time-dependent problem for the fluid flow in the bearing gap. The latter includes both the FFF and the AF that are joined at rupture and formation boundaries. The initial fluid content in the void span is bracketed between a dry void and a freshly cavitated wet void. As time progresses, transportation of AF across the void space and boundary motions form a coupled evolution process. Formulas for the boundary motions indicate that the formation boundary would become stationary simultaneously as the rupture boundary approaches the Swift-Stieber (SS) condition [2, 3]. Sample 1-D RST calculations illustrate temporal evolutions of the FFF pressure profiles, cavitation boundary locations and fluid content in the void span (AF profile). Resulting asymptotic pressure profiles are substantially different from published ECA calculations.

Abstract:
In order to validate the numerical procedure, the explosion of a mine was recreated within the non-linear dynamics software, AUTODYN. Two models were created and analysed for the purposes of this study — buried and flush HE charge in sand. The explosion parameters — time of arrival, maximum overpressure and specific impulse were recorded at two stand-off distances above the ground surface. These parameters are then compared with LS-DYNA models and published experimental data. The results, presented in table format, are in reasonable agreement.

Fluhr, Robert, and Volker Brendel. Harnessing the genetic diversity engendered by alternative gene splicing. United States Department of Agriculture, December 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2005.7696517.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Our original objectives were to assess the unexplored dimension of alternative splicing as a source of genetic variation. In particular, we sought to initially establish an alternative splicing database for Arabidopsis, the only plant for which a near-complete genome has been assembled. Our goal was to then use the database, in part, to advance plant gene prediction programs that are currently a limiting factor in annotating genomic sequence data and thus will facilitate the exploitation of the ever increasing quantity of raw genomic data accumulating for plants. Additionally, the database was to be used to generate probes for establishing high-throughput alternative transcriptome analysis in the form of a splicing-specific oligonucleotide microarray. We achieved the first goal and established a database and web site termed Alternative Splicing In Plants (ASIP, http://www.plantgdb.org/ASIP/). We also thoroughly reviewed the extent of alternative splicing in plants (Arabidopsis and rice) and proposed mechanisms for transcript processing. We noted that the repertoire of plant alternative splicing differs from that encountered in animals. For example, intron retention turned out to be the major type. This surprising development was proven by direct RNA isolation techniques. We further analyzed EST databases available from many plants and developed a process to assess their alternative splicing rate. Our results show that the lager genome-sized plant species have enhanced rates of alternative splicing. We did advance gene prediction accuracy in plants by incorporating scoring for non-canonical introns. Our data and programs are now being used in the continuing annotation of plant genomes of agronomic importance, including corn, soybean, and tomato. Based on the gene annotation data developed in the early part of the project, it turned out that specific probes for different exons could not be scaled up to a large array because no uniform hybridization conditions could be found. Therefore, we modified our original objective to design and produce an oligonucleotide microarray for probing alternative splicing and realized that it may be reasonable to investigate the extent of alternative splicing using novel commercial whole genome arrays. This possibility was directly examined by establishing algorithms for the analysis of such arrays. The predictive value of the algorithms was then shown by isolation and verification of alternative splicing predictions from the published whole genome array databases. The BARD-funded work provides a significant advance in understanding the extent and possible roles of alternative splicing in plants as well as a foundation for advances in computational gene prediction.
