Abstract:
Recent years have seen a rise in nationalistic and even xenophobic rhetoric as well as actions animated by fears of the other and the foreigner. In light of these recent displays of xenophobia, this article theologically examines the category of otherness in conversation with the work of Nicholas of Cusa, specifically his De Li Non Aliud ( On the Not-Other). This fifteenth-century German theologian offers insights not only for reading God’s difference in relation to the world, but also for conceiving of how God’s alterity transforms creaturely otherness from the impetus for violence and repression to the basis for genuine reconciliation and relationship.

Bond, Sarah. "Altering Infamy." Classical Antiquity 33, no. 1 (April 1, 2014): 1–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/ca.2014.33.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper investigates the application of the legal stigma of infamia (disrepute) in Late Antiquity. The legal status is used as a lens through which to view the changing systemic, religious, and social landscapes between the reigns of Diocletian and Justinian, indicating the various uses and, ultimately, abuses of the status, as well as the marked consequences of expanding its definition. The use of the legal status to marginalize religious deviants in particular is inspected. This analysis reveals that the amendment of infamia to include heretics, apostates, and pagans signals the use of classical law to define orthodoxy and to articulate the anxiety over the pagan-Christian religious transition. The unforeseen consequences of infamia's expansion were the abetment of violence in the fourth and fifth centuries. Moreover, the disqualification of religious deviants from serving on curial councils had a noticeable impact on some municipalities in the later empire, and may have created a loophole with which to avoid curial service altogether.

Abstract:
The generic use of masculine plural forms in grammatical gender languages has been criticized for activating unequal gender representations that are male dominant. The present study examined whether the recently introduced gender-neutral forms of nominalized adjectives and participles in German provide references that induce more balanced representations. We used cross-linguistic differences as a means to illustrate the flexibility of the gender representation system and investigated both native and nonnative (French–German bilinguals) speakers of German. Although a masculine bias persisted when participants read role nouns in the masculine plural form, the study suggests that the usage of nominalized forms can attenuate this male bias, even for nonnative speakers. The results of the study provide further support for the use of gender-neutral language.

Abstract:
A unique hyperbolic geometry paradigm requires altering the Relativistic principle that absolute velocity is unmeasurable. There is no absolute velocity, but in the case where a constant velocity is made from a half-angle velocity, a variable velocity is the same as (absolute) acceleration. Relativity is based on local Lorentz geometry. Our mathematical geometry constructs circle and hyperbola vectors with hyperbolic terms in an original formulation of complex numbers. We use a point on a hyperbola as a frame of reference. A theory is given that time and our velocity are inversely related. The physical laws of motion by Galileo, Newton and Einstein are forged using the half-angle velocity to electromagnetic velocity. The field of kinetic, potential and gravitational force accelerations is established. An experiment exemplifies the math from the Earth’s frame of reference. We discover a possible dark energy and gravitational accelerations and a geometry of gravitational collapse.

Abstract:
Most CF (cystic fibrosis) results from deletion of a phenylalanine (F508) in the CFTR {CF transmembrane-conductance regulator; ABCC7 [ABC (ATP-binding cassette) sub-family C member 7]} which causes ER (endoplasmic reticulum) degradation of the mutant. Using stably CFTR-expressing BHK (baby-hamster kidney) cell lines we demonstrated that wild-type CTFR and the F508delCFTR mutant are cleaved into differently sized N- and C-terminal-bearing fragments, with each hemi-CFTR carrying its nearest NBD (nucleotide-binding domain), reflecting differential cleavage through the central CFTR R-domain. Similar NBD1-bearing fragments are present in the natively expressing HBE (human bronchial epithelial) cell line. We also observe multiple smaller fragments of different sizes in BHK cells, particularly after F508del mutation (ladder pattern). Trapping wild-type CFTR in the ER did not generate a F508del fragmentation fingerprint. Fragments change their size/pattern again post-mutation at sites involved in CFTR's in vitro interaction with the pleiotropic protein kinase CK2 (S511A in NBD1). The F508del and S511A mutations generate different fragmentation fingerprints that are each unlike the wild-type; yet, both mutants generate new N-terminal-bearing CFTR fragments that are not observed with other CK2-related mutations (S511D, S422A/D and T1471A/D). We conclude that the F508delCFTR mutant is not degraded completely and there exists a relationship between CFTR's fragmentation fingerprint and the CFTR sequence through putative CK2-interactive sites that lie near F508.
