Abstract:

Action Levels (ALs) are thresholds which are used to determine whether dredged material is suitable for disposal at sea by providing a proxy risk assessment for potential impacts to biological features such as fish and benthos. This project tested proposed scenarios for changes to the UK Action Levels to determine the likely implications for navigational dredge licensing in England and Wales. Approximately 3000 sample data records from 2009 to 2018 were collated with varying numbers of concentrations for contaminant parameters including trace metals, organotins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Initially, these data were assessed using current ALs to determine the percentages of the samples with levels below AL1 (generally acceptable for disposal), between AL1 and AL2 and those showing levels above AL2 (generally unacceptable for disposal). These results were then used to compare with the results of the proposed new AL scenarios for each contaminant type derived from literature reviews and historic data. The results indicate that there are changes to the ALs which could be made such as updating the current ALs with the revised ALs, as well as the introduction of ALs where there are currently none set. The benefits of changing the ALs include reducing contaminant disposal to the marine environment and increased transparency in decision making. Any proposed scenarios will need to be phased in carefully in full liaison with stakeholders.

Abstract:

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are a group of nitrophenanthrene carboxylic acids present in many medicinal herbs of the Aristolochia genus that may cause irreversible hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity. However, the specific profile of AAs and their toxicity in Aristolochia plants, except for AAs Ι and ΙΙ, still remain unclear. In this study, a total of 52 batches of three medicinal herbs belonging to the Aristolochia family were analyzed for their AA composition profiles and AA contents using the UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS approach. The studied herbs were A. mollissima Hance (AMH), A. debilis Sieb.etZucc (ADS), and A. cinnabaria C.Y.Cheng (ACY). Chemometrics methods, including PCA and OPLS-DA, were used for the evaluation of the Aristolochia medicinal herbs. Additionally, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the selected AAs and the extracts of AMH and ADS were evaluated in a HepG2 cell line using the MTT method and a Comet assay, respectively. A total of 44 AAs, including 23 aristolochic acids and 21 aristolactams (ALs), were detected in A. mollissima. Moreover, 41 AAs (23 AAs and 18 ALs) were identified from A. debilis Sieb, and 45 AAs (29 AAs and 16 ALs) were identified in A. cinnabaria. Chemometrics results showed that 16, 19, and 22 AAs identified in AMH, ADS, and ACY, respectively, had statistical significance for distinguishing the three medicinal herbs of different origins. In the cytotoxicity assay, compounds AL-BΙΙ, AAΙ and the extract of AMH exhibited significant cytotoxicities against the HepG2 cell line with the IC50 values of 0.2, 9.7 and 50.2 μM, respectively. The results of the Comet assay showed that AAΙ caused relatively higher damage to cellular DNA (TDNA 40–95%) at 50 μM, while AAΙΙ, AMH and ADS extracts (ranged from 10 to 131 μM) caused relatively lower damage to cellular DNA (TDNA 5–20%).

Abstract:

Zusammenfassung. Soziale, dimensionale und temporale Vergleichsprozesse stellen vermittelnde Mechanismen zwischen erbrachter Leistung und dem Fähigkeitsselbstkonzept (FSK) dar. Die vorliegende Arbeit überprüft den Zusammenhang zwischen Vergleichsprozessen und dem mathematischen FSK im Grundschulalter. Dabei wird berücksichtigt, ob die Leistung den Erwartungen der Schüler/-innen widerspricht. 379 Dritt- und Viertklässler wurden am Tag vor einer Mathematikarbeit zu ihrer Notenerwartung und zu ihrem mathematischen FSK befragt. Nach der Rückgabe der benoteten Arbeit machten die Schüler Angaben zu den Vergleichsprozessen sowie erneut zum FSK. Wie erwartet zeigte sich, dass Vergleiche mit besseren Mitschülern (soziale Aufwärtsvergleiche) negative Auswirkungen auf das FSK haben, soziale Abwärtsvergleiche dagegen positive. Trotz der negativen Konsequenzen sozialer Aufwärtsvergleiche werden diese gegenüber Abwärtsvergleichen bevorzugt, insbesondere, wenn die Leistung schlechter als erwartet ausfiel. Dimensionale und temporale Vergleiche haben den Befunden zufolge keine Effekte auf das FSK.

Abstract:

Im Kontext der Rehabilitation und Partizipation von Menschen mit Behinderung spielt der Einsatz von Technik als Hilfsmittel eine wichtige Rolle. Getragen von behindertenpolitischen Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahrzehnte haben sich Hilfsangebote vervielfältigt – Stichwörter sind Assistive Technologien, Barrierefreiheit und Universelles Design. Im Rahmen der kulturwissenschaftlichen Reflexion auf Behinderung zeigt sich allerdings, dass Technik auch an der Hervorbringung einer funktionsbezogenen Differenzierungskategorie Behinderung beteiligt ist. Technik erweist sich als ein Dispositiv. Eine phänomenologische Betrachtung von Technik als Antwort nimmt diesen kritischen Gesichtspunkt auf und öffnet den Blick für eine ethisch fundierte Perspektive auf die Techniknutzung im Kontext Behinderung.

Abstract:

The human endogenous retrovirus-K (HERV-K) and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) have been associated with the pathophysiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Given these findings, we investigated the humoral response against HERV-K envelope surface (env-su) glycoprotein antigens and TDP-43 in the plasma of ALS patients and healthy controls (HCs). The measured levels of Abs against the different epitopes’ fragments were significantly elevated in ALS patients, both in long-survivor (LS) and newly diagnosed (ND) patients, compared to HCs. We observed a positive correlation between HERV-K and TDP-43 antibodies (Abs) levels, which seemed to strengthen with disease progression, that was not found in HCs. The TDP-43 and HERV-K epitopes identified in this study are highly immunogenic and recognized by the humoral response of ALS patients. Increased circulating levels of Abs directed against specific HERV-K- and TDP-43-derived epitopes could serve as possible biomarkers.

Abstract:

Local integration policies provide alternatives to the German federal policy towards refugees which puts emphasis on security concerns. A theoretical conception of the former following the logic of peace includes the proactive handling of uncertainties and a differentiated, inclusive design. It perceives migration as a chance and aims to improve the opportunities to participate for all inhabitants. It strives to strengthen the population’s intercultural openness and to organize integration processes with civil society and refugees alike. Respect for human dignity constitutes its central orientation point. In the observation of integration processes, it adopts an extended perspective.
