Full text-- The process of sperm cryopreservation is widely used in the programs of assisted reproduction and genetic improvement of many species. The alpaca is a domestic species of economic importance in our country. There are many techniques for managing this species in order to carry out a genetic improvement program. For the cryopreservation of sperm, samples of sperm from semen and epididymis have been used, being more feasible for the present study the use of sperm from the epididymis. One feature present in the cryopreserved sperm in most species is a disturbance at the plasma membrane which leads to a premature acrosome reaction, as well as declining mobility, making the lifetime of the sperm very small. All these changes are the result of a special type of process called "Cryocapacitation" that so far, the possible cause, has not been defined. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the presence of a state of cryocapacitation on Alapaca’s cryopreserved spermatozoa, studying mainly mobility, viability and stability of the plasma membrane, the pattern of proteins phosphorylated in tyrosine residues, the state of Proacrosin-Acrosin system and the ability of binding to pellucida zone that have these cryopreserved sperm and compare these results with those from capacitated in vitro sperm. The results indicate that cryopreservation directly affects mobility, viability and integrity of acrosomal membrane, showing that both capacitated in vitro and cryopreserved sperm offered the same pattern of proteins phosphorylated in tyrosine residues and that cryopreserved sperm has an increment of active enzyme (Acrosin) in the acrosome region.

Full text--- The aim of the present research was to study the cellular architectural features of the thymus´ cervical and thoracic segments in alpaca fetuses (Lama pacos), and provide accurate information to the knowledge of this organ. For such purpose, 10 alpaca fetuses aged 41-188 days were collected, dissected and histologically analyzed. The most important results shown that the thymus´ anlage, at 40 days of age, had an acinar architectural morphology infiltrated by a few lymphoid cells and surrounded by mesenchymal cells. At 60 days of age, the anlage of cervical region appeared as a lymphoid “follicle” with a dense population of thymocites, whereas the thoracic region had a cystic appearance with short trabecular projections toward the anlage´s inner zone. At 100 days of fetal age, first differentiation between cortex and medulla was evident in the posterior cervical and thoracic segments, where the thymic parenchyma started to have well-defined trabecular projections, giving it an appearance of pseudolobullations. Also, at 130 days of age a little differentiation between the cortex and medulla in the anterior cervical segments was observed. At 165 days of fetal age, all the cervical and thoracical segments shown a well-defined lobular arrangement in the cortex and medulla. Thymic cap remained mainly as a double cellular layer of lax connective tissue. Subcapsular and trabecular blood vessels shown fenestrated endothelium. Erythroblastic cells in the peripheral subcapsular and cortical zones since 100 days were observed. Hema-thymic barrier started to be arranged since 60 days. Hassal´s medullar corpuscle at 100 days, as well as the epithelial reticular cellular barrier in the cortical-medullar zone since 130 days were seen. Key Words: Alpaca, fetus, thymus, thymocite, Hassal´s corpuscle.

Full text--- South American Camelids represent the source of living for many low resource farmers in the highlands, and considering that currently Peru represents 85% of the population of alpacas in the world; it lacks of comprehensive study of its gross anatomy, including skull osteometry and the calculating of craniometric indexes. This study was carried out using 30 heads of adult Huacaya alpacas (15 males and 15 females), from the district of Sicuani, province of Canchis, department of Cusco; once prepared the material with the maceration technique, the anatomical description was achieved, using the recommended terminology for the Veterinary Anatomical Nomenclature 2012; subsequently, the measurement and calculation of craniometric indexes was performed, using the Vernier as a measuring tool. The values obtained were evaluated with the "t-test" using the statistical program Minitab, the significance level used for the analysis of the results was 5%, in all osteometric measures no statistical difference related to sex was observed (p <0.05); therefore, adult alpacas do not have sexual dimorphism related to craniometry. Regarding craniometric indexes, the types of skulls alpacas are: dolichocephalic with a Total Cephalic Index of 46.43%, ultradolichocranial with a Total Cephalic Index of 55.42%; the alpaca face is the hiperleptene type with a facial index of 103.17%; it presents a Mandibular index of 62.33% and the facial triangle is scalene type. Full text--- Currently works about cryopreservation of epididymal alpaca sperm have been developed, showing decrease of the parameters of viability, motility and plasma membrane integrity after thawing process, mainly due to reactive oxygen species produced during cooling process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cryopreservation over the antioxidant proteins GPx1 and GPx4 from epididymal alpaca sperm. We used samples (n:30) of sperm obtained from the cauda of epididymis, and a slow freezing process with dimethylacetamide (0.375M) as a cryoprotectant agent. It was analyzed the parameters of motility, viability and integrity of plasma membrane before and after cooling process; the protein extracts from sperm was evaluated before and after cooling to examine the state of this protein by western blott technique; the intracellular localization of this proteins was done by immunofluorescence technique, the expression level of gene Gpx4 in testicular tissue biopsies was quantified by RT-PCR-RT. The results showed a decrease in the percentage of viability, motility and plasma membrane integrity after thawing process; the intracellular localization of GPx1 and GPx4 were identified in regions such as the head (GPx1) and flagellum (GPx4) of sperm, by western blot we got bands of GPx1 inactive forms of the protein and the active form of GPx4 (27 kDa); It was obtained a significant positive relationship between the level of molecular gene expression of GPx4 and motility before and after cooling process The location of proteins GPx1 and GPx4 demonstrate its functions of protection of alpaca sperm, which was not altered by the cryopreservation process, but the state (active form) of protein GPx1 was affected. There is a positive weak correlation between the level of GPx4 gene relative expression with sperm motility. Key words: Alpaca, cryopreservation, spermatozoa, glutation peroxidase.

Full textThe alpaca fiber textile sector is one of the most important industries of our country because it has a great influence on the economy of our country, since it is a market highly recognized worldwide. Arequipa has a good quality alpaca raw material at an economical price, which is the main comparative advantage in this sector compared to the rest of regions, to this is also added the variety of fibers and wool of various camelids what Makes it competitive in the world market, but this would not be enough to keep us in the market since Arequipa must be in a constant search to innovate and improve its products based on alpaca fiber. It is important to bear in mind that we must promote sustainable growth and diversify Peruvian exports, Arequipa must adapt to the changing scenario of the textile market, seeking to adopt measures to improve the competitiveness of the alpaca fiber sector, because it is one of our Main drivers for the economy of our region. Currently 80% of alpacas are owned by peasant communities and producers of scarce resources with a traditional type of care lacking technological innovation and the rest are medium producers and associative enterprises, which is why the textile sector should focus on generating Strategic alliances with its suppliers to generate a short-term and long-term winwin. In addition, alpaca fiber has an approximate production of 3,400 tons per year, of which 85% is destined for industry, which is usually for export, 15% is for use in handicrafts or own consumption. This strategic plan will help us to identify the main factors that affect the alpaca fiber textile industry in Arequipa and how to remain competitive in an international market, considering that we have an evident comparative advantage with the alpaca population, looking for a factor of Sustainable development with a rational use of our resources and generate a supply chain through alliances between producers, exporters and customers

Full textWith the intention to contribute to the development of local social policies en general and especially to the implementation of an institutional policy of participation, the Centre for Studies for Regional Development, CEDER, has worked out this survey which is based on the NGO’s experience with its project called “Development of competitiveness in alpaca wool production and marketing in the Andean territory of Moquegua”. The main goal of this study is to identify the principle factors that influence the participation levels of the beneficiaries. To reach this aim, the following aspects were examined, using a qualitative investigation strategy: The conceptual design and strategy adopted by CEDER The perception of the beneficiaries as to the project The external factors that have an effect on participation and The characteristics of participation shown by the beneficiaries, taking into account the information that was gathered during the interviews with the target group in general and the focus group in particular, the latter consisting of members of the leaders’ team Simple observations of different events that were carried out throughout the project, and A review of different project and institutional documents. The results concerning the conceptual design and strategy adopted by CEDER show that the institution features a “functionalistic” and “economistic” approach and lacks proper participation mechanisms; however, it ascribes an importance to participation as a mean to achieve its purposes. As to the notion of the members of the leaders’ team it was found out that they copy CEDER’s conception even though all of them tend to make an effort to reach a participtive approach. With reference to the beneficiaries’ conception about the project it was discovered that their level of knowledge about CEDER’s participation strategies is low, and acknowledge that the most important benefits are those achieved in medium and long term, such as the improvement of their cattle’s genetics, the improvement of alpaca wool and the increase of revenues. As to external factors that influence participation, it was ascertained that there is a superposition of activities between private enterprises and CEDER. Besides, private companies offer resources in an “assistentialistic” approach leading to the extreme situation that the population considers that these contributions made by the state and private enterprises are compulsive. As a result of the mentioned factors it was found out that the beneficiaries’ participation shows the following particularities: During the planning phase participation is mainly reduced to the definition of places and schedules of the project cycle During the execution phase, participation is limited mainly to man power and construction materials input aiming at the projects progress During the evaluation phase it is characterized by work meetings, workshops and community meetings aiming at a discussion about the achievement of goals and benefits, as well as the transference of donated items.

Full textThe objective of the thesis is to elaborate a basic Process Management model so that the Alpaca fiber textile SMEs that exist in the City of Puno, in the department of Puno of Peru, can begin to take care of large orders. This model outlines the standardization of Production Planning and Control. The purpose is that the different SMEs work under the same scheme to standardize the final products through an associative behavior to meet large orders. This work focuses on four chapters, the first chapter focuses on the research of the sector on which we are conducting the research. The second chapter shows the results of the research that was done using the snowball. The third chapter establishes improvement plans aligned to a basic process approach. Finally, in the fourth chapter the validations of both experts and the producers of the SMEs are presented. The results obtained through interviews with the 49 SMEs producers were that 84% work without stipulated processes, simply by experience. Also, 79% are unaware of the importance of control panels to achieve improvements to reprocesses. Additionally, 90% reject large orders, since they do not have the production capacity or the raw material required. Finally, only 9% follow up on their customers and suppliers.

Full textAn important biotechnology with a great impact on the genetic improvement in domestic species is the develop of Artificial Insemination (AI). However, information on the collection, characteristics, evaluation and preservation of semen from the alpaca is still insufficient. The highly viscous nature of camelid semen represents a further challenge to the development of AI technology, which requires evaluation methods that contribute to liquefaction, submit to a cryopreservation protocol and study sperm quality post-thaw. For the present study, 4 male adult alpacas were trained for collection with artificial vagina. Semen collection was performed once a week for 6 weeks for a total of 24 samples. Each sample was assessed for quality parameters in fresh and immediately split into two equal fractions and were added a commercial dilutor. Each fraction was exposed to a different treatment of semen: a fraction (A) was submitted to the mechanical action by passages through a needle N°18 (needling) and the other fraction (B) was submitted to manual shaking. Then, both fractions were centrifuged at 802 × 10 minutes. Completed the process, the supernatant was removed and the pellet was reconstituted with commercial dilutor to be submitted to a temperature drop to 5 ° C and a reassessment of the semen. Then, 0.5 ml straws were loaded with the final dilution and they exposed to liquid nitrogen vapor before they were storaged in the tank. After 7 days, the straws were thawed in water at 37°Cfor a minute to be tested. The results obtained after post-thawed between treatment A (needle passages) and B (hand shaking) for percent motility no statistically significant difference between the two treatments (K-Wkallis: 1.67; p> 0.05) was found. In relation to the percentage of live sperm, percentage of sperm to test positive endosmosis (HOST) and the percentage of normal sperm was not statistically significant differences between treatments (ANOVA, p> 0.05). Full text--- Nowadays, information about inbreeding and generation intervals in alpacas from pedigree information to monitoring genetic progress of selection programs, inbreeding depression on productive traits or genetic variability for conservations strategies, are scarce. The aim of this research is to determinate inbreeding coefficients, generation intervals and the effect of inbreeding on birth weight and fleece weight in a population of alpacas. To determinate these parameters, data from 12,493 individuals born from 1999 to 2012 in Mallkinis´ Farm - MICHELL Group, in Puno, Perú, were analyzed and processed with Pedigree Viewer and the program ENDOG 4.8. Stastistical analysis was made with SAS. Average inbreeding coefficients was 0.1654% for the whole population. Only 1.097% alpacas had inbreeding coefficients greater than 0, with a minimum value of 1.56 % and a maximum of 25%. Generation intervals obtained were 5.938±0.017, 6.319±0.034, and 5,606±0.034 for the whole population, males and females, respectively, being differences between sexes statistically significant. Furthermore, differences were found per type and color of alpacas. The effect of 1% of inbreeding results in -0.00418 Kg and -0.01107 Kg for birth weight and fleece weight, with p= 0.530 and p= 0.002, respectively. Also, the average increase of inbreeding coefficients by generation was less 1% (0.23%). The results show that the inbreeding in this population is present in a smaller extent. Nevertheless, the effect of inbreeding depression in birth weight is no statistically significant but fleece weight it is. It is important to get more genealogical information for a better estimation of inbreeding coefficients and its effect on productive traits in alpacas Key words: Inbreeding, alpaca, genealogical, inbreeding depression

The present study was conducted using 10 heads of adult alpacas (5 males and 5 females) from the Municipal Slaughterhouse Nuñoa province of Melgar, Puno, after extraction, the brains were preserved in 10% formalin for 1 week, subsequently transverse sections were performed in 7 of the brains and longitudinal sections in 3 of the remaining brains, these cuts were preserved with 10% formalin and were subsequently processed using the technique Mulligan, staining was performed with ferric chloride and ferrocyanide potassium for macroscopic observation of anatomical structures. The results were described as the anatomical Payroll Veterinary Science (2012) and showed the presence of the basal nuclei of the cerebral hemispheres in the transverse cuts made. At the level of the parietal lobe and the third ventricle, the head of the caudate nucleus was observed, and the Globus pallidus lateral putamen, the next cut made at the level of the parietal lobe and also third ventricle, showed the presence of internal and external capsule, and, the last portion of the parietal lobe and third ventricle, the tail of the caudate nucleus was observed. No structures in the longitudinal sections were observed. Similar anatomical arrangement of the basal nuclei of the alpaca with other domestic species such as horses and cattle was found. Keywords: Alpaca, basal ganglia, anatomy

Full text-- The present study was carried out at IVITA-Maranganí Experimental Station to evaluate the effect of two levels of feeding on the yield and fiber quality. Twelve young male alpacas were used. A pre experimental phase was considered to accustom to the animals to a new balanced diet and an experimental phase with four periods was considered; the periods I and III of 28 days for equalizing body condition, in the period II the animals were submitted to two treatments: T1 (0.7M) and T2 (1.2M) given them 0.73 and 1.23 times the maintenance requirement for 84 days and in the period IV the animals of T1(0.7M) were transferred to the T2(1.2M) and vice versa for 84 days. In the periods II y IV fiber samples were taken from one 100 cm2 area on the right mid side position and the yield, diameter (D), length (L), the volume (V), the ratio L/D and the contribution of D(L) of the fiber were measured

Full textThe strategic planning for the Textile Sector of Fibra de Alpaca in the Arequipa Region, was prepared following the methodology of the sequential model of the strategic process proposed by Dr. D'Alessio 2015; to date, there are weaknesses such as lack of leadership in the cooperatives that group the small alpaca farmers, lack of collection centers and road infrastructure, low technical level of the small producers of alpaca. It has strengths that confront weaknesses such as the diversity of alpaca fibers, availability of high Andean lands, diversity of tourist sites, presence of national and foreign investment and economic solidity, as well as its position as the leading copper producer in the region. Peru, constituting the most representative, complemented with milk production and tourism. The Arequipa Region can develop competitive advantages based on the connectivity it achieves between its provinces, the development of agricultural clusters, its diversity of animal resources, the availability of land and the diversity of tourist sites. There is a limitation for decision making in some areas of the region; as the management and control of the budget of the region is limited because large projects and companies such as large-scale mining, medium-scale mining, export industries are managed through the Ministries. Therefore, this work includes three long-term objectives that will drive the development of the region by the year 2027, these will be carried out through the development of 14 retained and contingency strategies and compliance and monitoring of its ten objectives short term. With the application of the proposed strategic plan and the control through the balance scorecard, great changes can be achieved in a period of ten years; the increase in gross added value, with greater exports of alpaca fiber textiles, the increase in the production and export of minerals and the generation of employment
