Full textIn the OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods) field, the columns used to extract oil or gas from wells are made of tubes screwed together. The screwed part, called the connection, is designed to guarantee the tightness of the joints during use. To do this, the connection has a specific design, with very precise tolerances to be guaranteed. Surface treatments are applied to the connections to protect them during storage and screwdriving operations. This thesis addresses the use of zinc and its alloys, particularly ZnNi, for OCTG applications as sacrificial protective coatings. The electroplating of zinc-nickel is crucial today, but it faces environmental challenges. Vallourec uses a specific process for the treatment of the threaded connections of its tubes, therefore the challenge is to anticipate the impact of the process on other types of sacrificial coatings. Consequently, this thesis highlights the need to understand and optimize the electroplating process of zinc alloys, to meet industrial needs. This work made it possible to understand the mechanisms of electrodeposition of zinc alloys, based on electrochemical studies (e.g. voltamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and characterizations of the deposited layers (e.g. SEM-EDX, XRD, stresses, adhesion, etc.). These studies were carried out with several types of baths, in chloride and sulfate medium, highlighting the influence of the electrolytic composition, but also of the surface preparation on the electrochemical behavior of the electrolytes. An alternative solution, based on zinc and chromium III, was also studied in a sulfate medium to understand the mechanisms common to the different deposits in a dynamic process. Finally, experimental plans made it possible to define the significant operating conditions (anode/cathode surface ratio, current density, velocity and temperature) on the kinetics of electrodeposition, thus allowing Vallourec to predict the distribution of its deposits on connection, but also to study the impact on the mechanical and microstructural properties of alloys and on burning phenomena in dynamic regime

Full textZinc alloys with copper and titanium additions are widely used in the shape of rolled sheets for part of roofing. After building, under bad weather conditions, when the temperature decreases, microcracks nucleate at the sheet surface. These microcracks can be quantified by a bendability test at low temperature. In order to remedy this industrial problem, previous studies in which the manufacuring process and the laboratory alloy compositions were modified have been carried out. It appears that some chemical additions improve the bendability of these alloys. It was therefore necessary to see whether this could apply under industrial conditions. The manufacturing process used for the alloys here studied is the same as the industrial process widely used. A large scale of copper and titanium concentrations is chosen with other chemical element additions. However, these components have not been located into the alloys. Thanks to surface analysis (glow discharge optical emission spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectroscopy), the chemical element edging was determined within the microstructure. The oxidation states of elements have been shown owing to electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. Texture gradient in the sheets were experimentally characterised by X-rays investigations and modelled using friction and/or shear strain components. The mechanical behaviour of the sheets was monitored by bending and tensile tests. A statistical approach using principal component analysis was developed to determine the influence of variations in alloying element concentrations on the different properties of the material

Full textWe worked on different zinc-copper-titanium alloy sheets (ZnCu matrix with Ti Zn15 as second phase). We studied in particular the texture, microstructure and mechanical properties of these sheets, especially their pliability. Indeed, it appears that the pliability of these sheets is determined to a large extent by their texture and microstructure. When the sheets have large grains (15 [micro]m), the texture is rather smooth and many grain boundaries show a strong misorientation ; intergranular cracking may appear as a consequence. When the sheets have smaller grains (8 [micro]m), the texture is sharper, the grain boundaries show a small misorientation and the pliability at low temperature is fairly good. By further reduction of the grain size, a new texture component appears, which c axes are tilted to a large to the normal of the sheet. As intergranular cracking easily occurs in these grains (clivage on the 00. 2 plane, the global pliability of the sheet is diminished

Full textThis work analyzes the effect of magnetic field on the properties of deposits Zn-Ni alloys. In this context, samples were prepared as a first step under a low magnetic field (0 ≤ B ≤ 1T) parallel to the surface of the electrode work for different working conditions (nickel ion concentrations CNi 2+ as 0. 2M ≤ CNi 2+ ≤ 0. 7M, pH variation, variation of applied potential as well as different configurations of the working electrode). The electrochemical results revealed no significant variations as well as the morphology of deposits obtained. The chemical composition remains almost constant for each concentration regardless of the applied magnetic field. However, the texture presents radical changes when a magnetic field is applied which will affect the behavior of deposits towards a corrosive environment. In a second step, the effect of an intense magnetic field (B ≤ 13T), according to the different directions parallel and perpendicular to the surface is studied. The electrochemical effects are insignificant. The analysis of the morphology does not show any apparent changes, the same for the chemical composition whatever the concentration and whatever the applied magnetic field. It is the composition of the phase which gives in this case very important changes. These changes occurred at the level of the deposits will have repercussion on the deposits developed under intense field in a corrosive environment

Full textCopper and its alloys (Brass) represent an important type of material that meet the requirements of many industrial applications in chemical industry, power and nuclear stations. Like most metallic materials, brass alloys suffer from corrosion, especially selective corrosion. Taking into account the conditions of use of these alloys, and risks of rupture of their structures, the control and the monitoring of these structures appeared necessary to us. For these reasons, the acoustical emission was used. In this work, acoustic emission (AE) associated with electrochemical measurements (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization curves) are used to study the selective corrosion of α, β’ -brass in basic and neutral chloride solution with and without inhibitor. The acoustic emission (AE) reveals, in this work, three different populations of events during the corrosion of this alloy. The corrosion process was found to proceed via oxygen reduction following a diffusion-controlled mechanism and a selective dissolution of α, β’-brass was controlled by the zinc atoms diffusion through oxide film. The analysis by X -ray diffraction of residual stresses, before and after corrosion, showed that the dezincification of metal produces two types of residual stresses: macro and micro-stresses. Their evolution correlates perfectly with the measured acoustic activity. These stresses are then the sources of acoustic emission. This shows the important potential of acoustic emission in the detection and the control of selective corrosion phenomena. 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) was used to protect brass against corrosion. The most important effect of MBI was to reduce the corrosion of copper and brass under immersed conditions in aqueous media. It has been tested as inhibitor directly added to the corrosive media (MBI) and / or a polymeric film previously deposited by electrochemical means (p-MBI). The presence of inhibitor reduces the acoustic activity and corrosion current density of about 99% in ammoniacal solution. This shows, on one band, the effectiveness of the inhibitor used and, on other band, the important potential of acoustic emission in the detection and the control of selective corrosion phenomena. As for the p-MBI, it was also effective in neutral chloride solution and presents moreover, a non polluting nature for the environment

Full textThis work deals with the electrodeposition of zinc-nickel alloys from alkaline bath on steel substrate for anti-corrosion applications in the aerospace field. The study of the physicochemical characteristics of deposits, produced from a standard formulation, shows the need to add additives in order to limit the morphological evolution of deposits with the applied current density. An electrochemical study just at the beginning of growing shows that it is possible to determine both the optimal concentrations of metallic cations and the elaboration process of the electrolyte allowing to deposit thick coatings with a nickel content in the range of 13 to 14%mass, with single-phased gamma and uniform microstructure for current densities between 1 and 10 A. Dm-2. To evaluate the embrittlement of steel caused by the hydrogen produced during the electrodeposition, mecanical tests are carried out. They underline the benefit of a coating/substrate interface with high nickel content to avoid the diffusion of hydrogen into steel. However, it has been shown that a thermal post-treatment of deshydrogenation is essential to limit the embrittlement of steel. To increase the anti-corrosion properties of zinc-nickel coatings, a study on a finishing deposit without chromium obtained from sol-gel route has been carried out. After studing the influence of experimental parameters on the characteristics of deposited films, we have shown that, for mechanical high-strength steel, sol-gel deposit confers to zinc-nickel coating a better protection against corrosion than a conversion layer containing hexavalent chromium

Full textNew Zn-RE1-5 wt.% alloys (RE=Ce, La and Mischmetal: Ce 75%/ La 25%) were synthesized by melting under controlled atmosphere and cast in plates. In these materials, rare earth metal are exclusively present in intermetallic phases homogeneously dispersed in the zinc matrix: Zn11Ce, Zn13La or Zn11Ce1-xLax and Zn13CeyLa1-y. The electrochemical behavior of these new alloys was investigated in a reference corrosivemedium. In parallel, the pure intermetallic phases Zn11Ce and Zn13La were synthesized and their electrochemical influence was studied by voltametry and galvanic coupling. Results show that both intermetallic phases act as preferential cathodic sites of dioxygen reduction and induce a cathodic inhibition of the corrosion of the Zn-RE alloys by comparison with pure zinc. This phenomenon is much more significant in the case of lanthanum containing alloys. In the specific case of cerium addition to zinc, an anodic inhibition was also observed and correlated with a chemical modification of the corrosion products (mainly made of hydrozincite). Actually, low quantities of cerium (less than 1 at.%) have been detected homogeneously in the corrosion layer by wave-length dispersive spectrometry. From results of controlled precipitation experiments of cerium and zinc salts performed in carbonated medium, the presence of cerium in the corrosionlayer and its protective character could be attributed to the formation of a mixed double lamellar zinc-cerium product. Therefore, addition to zinc of less than 2 wt.% of cerium or lanthanum allow to improve the corrosion resistance of zinc. However, by increasing the rare earth content in the alloys, the galvanic coupling phenomenon becomes more important and makes the alloys less resistant than pure zinc

Full textThe research of tests permitting to qualify protective coatings applied on buried pipelines was performed on two kinds of metallic deposit covered by a finishing organic coating : zinc + bituminous paint, zinc-aluminium (85-15% in weight) + epoxy paint. In this work, an important structure complexity of phase distributions was revealed inside of the investigated materials. This one results from the industrial process (projection by electric bow) and creates also a complexity of the interpretation of the electrochemical results. The “soil” environment was represented by a simple but aggresive solution (NaCl 6 g. L-1). The incident defects, resulting from the set up of the pipelines were simulated by a notch by which means the cast iron substrate was achieved. A physico-chemical model, expressing the electrochemical reactions of the duplex system, was established in terms of the porous electrode theory and with help of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A healing effect of the corrosion products of the metallic deposit was evaluated. It proves that the corrosion mechanisms are faster for the Zn+bituminous paint coating than the Zn+Al+epoxy paint coating. Consequently, Zn-Al+epoxy paint coating is a more efficient corrosion protection for longer immersion time in the chosen environment

Full textThis work was aimed at investigating the recovery of valuable metals eontained in sludges issued in steel plate plating factories. As a matter of fact, processes for the treatment of these wastes have to be developed, and our contribution has mainly concerned a valorisation process for zinc plating sludges. Thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the suitable conditions for complexation of zinc and nickel using ammonia. Leaching trials with solid samples issued from two factories, have shown the selective and efficient dissolution of both metal salts. A part of this dissertation deals with literature survey on co-deposition of zinc and nickel, together with the experimental investigation of the electrochemistry of these elements from synthetic ammonia-containing baths. In view to produce Zn-Ni alloy, numerous deposits were prepared at a rotating disk electrode and observed by electronic scanning microscopy. In spite of the promising results obtained, thermodynamic calculations of gas-liquid equilibria could show that the ammonia pressure over the electrolytic bath was high enough to hinder the further development of such process. An alternative solution to the use of ammonia was then suggested and glycine was considered through a similar approach. Zinc and nickel can be recovered with high yields from the two types of sludges by leaching using glycine. The electrolytic treatment of the leaching solutions in a discontinuous reactor showed that zinc could be deposited with satisfactory yields; in contrast, nickel deposition seems to be inhibited by glycine

Full textIn order to improve the cracking resistance, a new rolling process is explored for bulk zinc sheets and galvanized zinc sheets. It deals with asymmetrical rolling and asymmetrical skin-pass rolling. This type of rolling clearly changes dramatically the texture of zncuti whereas in the case of galvanized coating the texture is modified to a slight extent only. This is explained by the fact that the reduction ratio is large in rolling (ranging about 50%) whereas it is small in the skin-pass rolling (ranging about 2%). In this part results obtained by the simultaneous use of the taylor model for the prediction of textures, associated to the flow line model, are compared to the experimental results. The follow-up of the texture evolution during the deformation makes it possible to validate a posteriori the various assumptions made in the models of plasticity. In the last part, the study of the grain boundaries characteristics, in particular the misorientation through the grain boundary, completes the study of the mechanisms involved in the plastic deformation and cracking, in order to specify the role of the texture (intragranular cracking or cleavage are determined by grains orientation) and the grain boundaries characteristics (misorientation across grain boundary determining intergranular cracking). This study is carried out on zinc coatings in order to correlate cracking behaviors to the orientations and misorientations of grains

Full textThese research works deal with the investigation of the cyclique and fatigue behaviour of an industrial high-pressure die cast brass. Mechanical tests highlight relatively important changes of elasticity domain during monotonic loading, mainly due to changes of the internal stress. This study was conducted under different scales of observation. TEM observations enabled hypothesis to explain the "original" cyclic behaviour of the alloy. Fatigue tests showed that fatigue life of the material is quite dependent of the presence of defects that may be due to manufacture process. A simplified version of a multi-mechanism model was used to simulate the cyclic behaviour of the study alloy

Full textDuring the last years, strong recommendations have been put forward concerning the discharge of heavy metals and the possible impact of elements such as zinc on environment. The increasing use of this element, especially for the durability and integrity of metallic structure has lead to critical rate of zinc release due to the human activities in fluvial water and port areas. Regardless of the nature of the zinc based sacrificial coating, it is also necessary to realise surface treatments in order to ensure the aesthetic aspect, an enhancement of the corrosion resistance and the adherence of protective coatings such as chrome. The new national and european directives have restricted the use of Cr(VI), that must be banned and replaced by new environmentally friendly methods. Thus, the new generation of alternative methods consists in the deposition of rare earth metals specially cerium oxide cerium (CeO2) which could confer a good protection thanks to their action like passive film. The object of this study is focused on the development by electrodeposition, the characterization and the physicochemical properties of a thin layer of cerium oxide on coatings containing zinc. To this purpose, the study was undertaken on model pure zinc substrates and zinc alloy coatings. The characterisations showed the influence of certain parameters of the electrodeposition (density of current, times, concentration, additive and pulse current) on the mechanisms, and thus, on the morphology and the composition of films. The corrosion behaviour of the electrodeposited coatings in aqueous medium was also studied by combining immersion tests and accelerated tests (salt spray) in saline environment. If the tests showed that these films act as a physical barrier blocking the diffusion of oxygen, their effectiveness seem to be strongly dependent on the elaboration conditions of the coatings

Full textThe main objective of this study was to elaborate protective coatings on zinc by an aqueous sol-gel route. It was expected to reach sufficient anticorrosive efficiency with this kind of layer and to improve our knowledge of the involved phenomena. Based on Scientific literature, several routes have been investigated. These routes were adapted to our shaping constraints and optimized in order to increase coatings efficiency. Anticorrosive performances were then evaluated by an industrial accelerated corrosion test and by electrochemical techniques. By this way, one promising route has been underlined. Afterward, we focused on this efficient route: the formulation of the solution and the conditions of shaping and drying were studied by NMR and FTIR. It was shown that the increase of the aluminium precursor concentration improved the coating reticulation. Furthermore, the study highlighted that reticulation rate can be increased by thermal effect by adjusting the duration and the temperature of the drying step. These phenomena have a direct effect on the permeability of the layers and its anticorrosive performances. This study brought a weakly solvated solution, allowing an effective protection of the zinc, but also highlighted important correlations between the chemical structure of the network and the anticorrosive and the mechanical properties

Full textWe have studied the possibility to obtain a range of martensitic transformation temperatures Ms for a Cu-Zn-Al-Ni alloy by varying the heat treatment conditions. Prolonged homogenization treatment in phase at high temperature induces superficial oxidation phenomena which lead to a raising of martensitic transformation temperature Ms by losing constitutive elements of the alloy. Several conditions in quenching and annealing allow us to obtain different states of order, characterized by transmission electron microscopy. We show that ordering has a great influence on martensitic transformation temperature Ms and we study the evolutions at room temperature of the metastable state of the alloy, particularly by isothermal dilatometry and calorimetry. Our results are interpreted by interactions between vacancies and ordering

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to develop measurement devices able to characterize the thermoelectric properties and conductivities of liquid alloys under severe conditions of temperature and chemical reactivity. One does not know the thermal conductivity of the alloy lead/bismuth, which could be the liquid coolant and the neutron spallatlon source of the nuclear thermal power readors of fourth generation. We measured electric conductivity and thermoelectric power of this alloy on a broad range of temperature, with twelve different compositions. One deduced from it thermal conductivity according to the relations between the transport coefficients. In addition, the quasicristals have particular eletronic transport properties. A study of these alloys in the liquid state would be interesting. The principal experirnental difficulty is related to the chernical composition of quasicristals which are made of at least a very corrosive orchemically very active metal at the high temperatures of the liquids (aluminium, manganese, magnesium, rare eafihs. . . ). We developed new ceramic measurernent cells (alumina, boron nitride) able to resist the severe environmental conditions. These cells were tested within the framework of a study of ternary Mg39. 5-Ga20. 5-Zn40 which is a quasicristal in the solid state. The experirnental values of the various types of alloys were compared with computed values by using the Faber -Ziman frimalisrn and the theory of pseudopotentials

Full textThis work project is divided into two main studies: (a) the influence of certain organic additives on the power consumption and the purity of deposited zinc during electrowinning process, and (b) the electrodeposition of binary and ternary alloys of Fe-Mo and Fe-Mo-P on mild steel substrates to act as cathodes for chlorate production. (a) Among seven different examined organic additives, the ionic liquid salts succeeded to increase the current efficiency up to 95.1% compared to 88.7% obtained from standard electrolyte in presence of Sb3+ ions. Maximum reduction of power consumption of ~173 kWh ton-1 was observed by addition of 3 mg dm-3 of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride to the same electrolyte. Lead content in the zinc deposit is reduced from 26.5 ppm to 5.1-5.6 ppm by using the ionic liquid salts. (b) Different binary Fe-Mo and ternary Fe-Mo-P alloys have been electrodeposited on mild steel substrates. The prepared alloys have Mo content between 21-47 at.% and P content from 0 to 16 at.%. The electrocatalytic activity of these alloys towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was investigated in sodium chloride solutions. The maximum reduction of HER overpotential of ~313 mV was achieved from the prepared ternary alloy Fe54Mo30P16 compared to that obtained from mild steel. The surface roughness and intrinsic activity of Fe-Mo-P coatings could be the origin of the promising behavior of these electrocatalysts towards the HER.
