Full textThe study was carried out in order to develop metallic powders for the diamond tools. The work was focused on Fe-Co-W and Fe-Co-Mo ternary alloys. Phase equilibria were determined between 930°C and 1400°C owing to annealed alloys and also on the basis of diffusion couples. Several compositions were selected to develop new alloys with high mechanical properties. The effect of thermal treatments on the hardening of the alloys was studied for two compositions Fe-20Co-18W et Fe-27Co-8Mo (in mass). The evolution of hardening as a function of the microstructure features was examined using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The sequence of precipitation was determined. New alloys and associated thermal treatment suitable to industrial manufacturing are proposed

Full textThe oxidation behavior of quasicrystalline and approximant compounds has been studied in near industrial environnement, together with the subsequent evolution of their wetting properties. Two alloys have been selected: the icosahedral phase of the AlCuFe system and the O1 orthorhombic approximant of the decagonal phase in the AlCuFeCr system. Samples were either sintered pins or powders. Caracterisation techniques include X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, photoelectrons spectroscopy and laser ellipsometry, carried on specimens after just the surface preparation, i. E. Polishing, and atter oxidation cycles. It has been shown that the alloy chemistry prevail on the structure regarding the oxidation behavior. Because these intermetallics are Al-based, amorphous alumina is always formed on the surface. Depending on the oxidation conditions, the other chemical species can also oxidize. Ln the studied temperature and atmosphere ranges, depassivation is experienced either above 300ʿC and in boiling water. When oxidizing the icosahedral phase, a reservoir effect is proposed to explain occurring phase transformations. Non-wetting behavior was also studied just atter surface preparation and atter oxidation. Non- wetting properties are related to the complete surface system being the intermetallic substrate, the oxide(e) layer(s) it promotes and the extreme surface -carbon layers, hydroxides and hydroxyles bonds-. During cycles at 500ʿC, a reversible behavior is experienced

Full textAn industrial piece in a duplex titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V has been entirely and precisely characterized by an ultrasonic inspection. From a specific machining of specimens, a strong scattering in fatigue life time at room temperature has been revealed. This material presents some morphological and crystallographic textures at different scales. Within this context, an experimental method has been developed in order to study the elementary deformation and damage modes of polycrystalline titanium alloys. Through EBSD (electron backscattering diffraction) measurements coupled with in-situ (SEM) monotonic tensile tests and fatigue tests, the nature of the slip systems and the crack initiation sites (prismatic, basal and pyramidal) in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been precisely identified and analyzed in relation with the local crystallographic orientation. Concerning this point, a particular attention has been paid to the influence of the Schmid's factor. The local microstructural conditions favoring fatigue damage have been determined at different scales : microscopic scale of crack initiation and mesoscopic of crystallographic textures. Full textThe high energy X-rays diffraction is a powerful tool to characterize the phase transformation in metallic materials. Its use in the case of titanium alloys has allowed to study the phase transformation during heat treatments. We were able to characterize the different phases involved, to determine in situ the evolution of the mass fraction and the cell parameters of each phase. In the first time, we have studied the phase transformation a + ß ? ß during heating of Ti17, Ti64 and Ti6242 titanium alloys. The cell parameters evolutions have been compared to the chemical composition variations (determined by Thermocalc). Then, the transformation kinetics have been compared to calculated results obtained by a phase field approach. For the Ti17 alloy, we have characterized the phase transformation ß ? a + ß during the cooling. Different conditions were used: the anisothermal condition (during continuous cooling) and the isothermal condition (during dwells at different temperatures). The influence of the thermal path have been considered by means of tempering from a [bêta]-metastable state at room temperature. The evolution of the phase fraction has been compared to kinetics measured by electrical resistivity. The cell parameter and full width at half maximum (FWHM) variations and of each phase have allowed to highlight the changes of the chemical composition and the elastic strain during phase transformation
