Full textThis research deals with magical manuscripts from the Cairo Genizah that are currently held at the Alliance Israelite Universelle’s Library Genizah collection in Paris. The material concerns fourteen specimens including amulets and magical texts providing instructions in order to achieve individual purposes. Selected from the box 130, shelfmark VI C, most of the documents consists of one-folio or bi-folio’s Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts which are heterogeneous with regard to preservation conditions and origins, mostly belonging from the Middle Ages or the Early Modern Period. The survey, including a general introduction (history of the collection, methodological instruments, status quaestionis and literary features) and two sections delving into the manuscripts through their direct examination, combines both the palaeographical and philological perspectives with historical and cultural approaches on Hebrew magic. Documents’ descriptions (giving information about conservation, formats, writing materials, mise en page, mise en texte and types of script) and deciphering are equipped with philological comments and annotations about their contents and ritual deployment. The manuscripts are here compared with other magical sources from Late Antiquity until Early Modern Period displaying different textual typologies, aiming to investigate Hebrew magical literature both from diachronic and synchronic viewpoints. By analyzing sources coming from a single collection, this study succeeds in setting the texts into their historical and religious context and in sketching a profile of their authors, scribes and purchasers who lived in Hebrew Mediterranean and Near Eastern society

Full textIn this work, Al-Cu model alloy samples were heated in ultra high vacuum (UHV), and it was found that the Al oxide grew and Cu percentage increased as a function of exposure to the O2 owing to the preferential oxidation of Al. Then samples were annealed at 540 °C in high vacuum and aged at 300 °C in air, and corroded in short time in the neutral electrolyte and the alkaline electrolyte containing Cl- ion using the three-electrode system, respectively. After immersion in the neutral electrolyte, corrosion morphologies (trenching on the polished sample vs. hollow pits on the aged sample) are distinguished due to the different distributions of Cu-rich intermetallics in the polished sample (distributed homogeneously) and the aged sample (mostly beneath the oxide layer). However, in alkaline electrolyte, corrosion went at two stages owing to the dissolution of aluminium and aluminium oxide in an alkaline solution: firstly, Al oxide and the Al matrix were dissolved generally, resulting in Cu-rich intermetallics being left isolatedly on the surface; secondly, general corrosion went on accompanied with the preferential dissolution of substrate surrounding Cu-rich intermetallics resulting in trenching around particles. Formation of mixed Al-Cu oxides/hydroxides layer rich in Cu2O and CuO deposits were found on the corroded surface. Furthermore, Al-Cu samples covered with Al2O3 coatings deposited by ALD process on the surface were corroded under similar conditions. As expected, a significant improvement of corrosion resistance of the coated alloy samples was observed, but the ALD layer in alkaline electrolyte is not as stable as in neutral electrolytes, and undergoes dissolution

Assim, seria interessante estendê-los a outros locais importantes associados à nossa história evolutiva.
The influence of climate change on human evolution is much debated. Nevertheless, hominin fossils are scarce and different research directions, such as taxon-free methods, attempt to confront this reality. This project aims to apply these methods, using various machine learning (ML) techniques, to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental aspects of early Pliocene African sites related to Australopithecus anamensis. The proposed study used published data from astragalar measurements of bovids, taken from Kanapoi (n=31) and Allia Bay (n=15) fossils, and from extant individuals (n= 187). Two analyses were performed, ecomorphology where individuals from the extant sample were classified into different habitats and soil moist categories, and ecometrics, where the extant sample as a community was used to predict various precipitation and temperature variables, as well as classify land cover categories. Finally, several ML algorithms were trained for each analysis using data from the extant taxa to infer the possible environment of the fossil sample. The obtained results reveal better classification and prediction rates when applying different algorithms to the analyses in comparison to linear discriminant analysis (LDA), the method commonly used in these analyses. Furthermore, the ecomorphological analyses show mostly intermediate habitats and a mix of dry and wet categories for both sites. In a similar way, ecometric analyses show sites with tropical temperatures (23.8 and 25.7ºC), humid (>850 mm) but highly variable and consequently highly heterogeneous vegetation, combining evergreen broadleaf forests and herbaceous woodlands, but also more open systems such as grasslands. These two sites fall within a highly complex and variable context that can contribute to sudden changes in the environment. This seems to indicate that A. anamensis had thrived in these types of environments.Ultimately, ecometric methods seem more promising, as their results allow a clearer attribution to a potential climate. Hence, it would be interesting to extend the applied approach to other important sites associated with our own evolutionary history.

Full textIn an earlier study, stress lines in primate teeth were found to occur on a recurrent basis, probably corresponding to seasonal fluctuations in environmental parameters, such as food availability (Macho et al., J. Hum. Evol. 30 (1996) 57¿70). In the present study this approach was extended to the study of teeth of extant and extinct mammals, with the specific aim to determine the pattern of seasonality at the Australopithecus anamensis-bearing site at Allia Bay, Kenya. It was found that extant and extinct species, who share similar dietary/ecological adaptations, are comparable in their patterns of stress. Typical browsers/mixed feeders were found to exhibit three recurrent disturbances per year, whereas grazers usually only exhibit two. The average spacing between lines is also comparable between extant and extinct species. Hence, while the severity and predictability of the seasons probably fluctuated during crucial periods of hominin evolution, there is little doubt that all hominins lived in a seasonal environment. At Allia Bay, the pattern of stress lines found in mammals suggests that the environmental conditions in which A. anamensis lived may have been comparable to those found in the Masai Mara today.
