Full textFrom the nutritional point of view it is necessary to know the serum concentration of some minerals in children, adults, older people and to be able to interpret the results. It is essential to compare them with values of reference, in different old age groups. Sixty blood samples, 30 samples of hospitalized patients and 30 samples of patients like group were taken control, to which it took the samples them at the beginning, in the interval and at the end of the treatment. This work was carried out at the hospital Essalud “Edgardo Rebagliati Martins”, Lima in the nutritional support unit (USNA). The zinc levels (Zn), were determined in free serum of hemolysis by atomic absorption spectrofotometry . Then were determined that the patients dealt with total parenteral Nutrition (NPT) had an increase in the Zinc concentration from 74,3 to 84,53 ug/dl that is equivalent to the 13%. The patient men dealt with total parenteral Nutrition (NPT) had an increase in the Zinc concentration from 79,79 to 87,14 ug/dl that is equivalent to the 9,21%. And the patient women dealt with total parenteral Nutrition (NPT) had an increase in the 82,77 Zinc concentration from 73,4 to ug/dl that is equivalent to 13,17%. The results were optimal since it was possible to be verified that the zinc helps in the fast recovery of hospitalized patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two extracts of Quillaja saponaria Molina on the incidence of clinical disease and daily gain weight in calves in artificial rearing. Thirty Holstein calves from a high-production dairy farm, located in the town of Chimbarongo, were used. Calves were randomly assigned to three groups as they were born. The group I corresponded to the control group, where the calves received 2 grams of fructose. Calves in Group II received 2 grams of Nutrafito Q quillay extract which contained 6% saponin, while calves in group III received 0.6 grams of QP 1000 ® quillay extract with a concentration of 20% saponin. Both groups received a total concentration of 120 mg of total saponins. The products were dissolved in milk substitute and administered orally, once a day for the first 60 days of life. The frecuency of sick calves and the number of days that each group had disease was calculated, which were compared by a chi - square test of difference of proportions. Body weight and daily weight gain for each group were measured every 15 days and analyzed through a multivariate analysis of variance. Birth weight and total serum protein level, which was determined from blood samples taken on days 2, 6 and 10 of life, were considered as covariates Even though the groups treated with Nutrafito Q and QP 1000 ® quillay extracts had a higher frequency of sick calves (5 and 6 calves, respectively) compared to the control group (2 calves), no statistically significant differences were observed (p > 0.05) in the number of sick calves among the study groups (p = 0.20 between groups I – II; p = 0.68 between groups II - III). However, a trend was observed (p = 0.09) to a higher frequency of sick calves in the group treated with QP 1000 ® extract compared to calves in the control group. Regarding to the number of days in which were sick calves, a low frequency was observed (2, 6 and 8 of 600 days in the control groups, Nutrafito Q and QP 1000 ®, respectively). No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) in the number of days in which were sick calves was observed among the study groups (p = 0.17 between groups I – II, and p = 0.60 between groups II - III). However, a strong trend was observed (p = 0.06) towards a higher viii frequency of days in which there were sick calves in the group treated with QP 1000 ® extract compared to the control group. Regarding body weight, no significant differences between the study groups were observed (p = 0.56). Body weight was strongly influenced by of total serum protein level (p < 0.0001) and birth weight (p <0.0001). No significant differences in daily weight gain were observed among the study groups (p = 0.81). Additionally, daily weight gain was not influenced by the level of total serum protein (p = 0.15) nor birth weight (p = 0.94). It was concluded that oral administration of extracts of Quillaja saponaria, either as Nutrafito Q and QP 1000 ®, in doses of 120 mg. in a dairy under these artificial rearing conditions has no effect on the health and productive status of calves on the first 60 days of life.

Full textIntroduction of complementary feeding shows important differences depending on several factors, such as geographical area, training of health professionals responsible of baby follow-up or even socio-economic level of the family. The aim of the present study is to know present characteristics of food diversification in Spanish infants, studying breastfeeding duration, age of introduction of some of the more representatives elements of complementary feeding and influence of the different geographical and cultural areas on food introduction during the first year of life, as well as to compare the weaning of Spanish infants with those of another country with socio-demographic as it is Chile. Methods: 927 retrospective surveys to mothers of Spanish children (aged between 1-4 years) and 416 to Chilean mothers with the same characteristics were carried out, asking about: 1)Socio-demographic data, 2) Information about breastfeeding and infant formula introduction, 3)Information about age of introduction of several foods in infants diet, specially of gluten-containing food and cow milk. Statistical Analysis: Normality test (Shapiro-Wilk), Chi2, Wilconson test and Spearman Rho A significance level of 95% was considered. Results: Mean duration of exclusive breastfeeding in Spanish infants is 2,5+/-2,1 months and mean duration of total breastfeeding 3,8+/-4,0 months. In Chilean infants these values were 4,4+/-2,2 months and 10,9+/-7,3 months, respectively. Mean age of complementary feeding introduction is 4,4+/-1,3 months in Spanish infants and 5,0+/-1,7 months in the Chilean ones. In Spain, cereals are the first type of food introduced in Spanish infants diet, followed by fruits or cereals and fruits simultaneously. Mean age of gluten free cereals introduction is 4,8+/-1,4 months and gluten containing cereals are introduced at 7,5+/-1,8 months. In Chilean infants, weaning diversification presents more variety and introduction of vegetal and animal origin food at the same time in infant diet is usual. In this population, there are not statistical differences between the age of introduction of gluten-free and gluten containing-cereals in infant diet. Mean age of cow milk introduction is Spanish infants is 14,6+/-4,4 months. 65% of the sample introduced growth ("junior") milks in their feeding before consuming cow milk. Cow milk introduction in Chilean infants takes place at 8,3+/-4,7 months and more than 90% take junior milks before its introduction. Statistically significant differences have been found between the different Spanish geographical areas in age in complementary feeding start and in age on gluten and cow milk introduction. Conclusions: 1) A low percentage of Spanish and Chilean infants follow WHO recommendations about exclusive breastfeeding duration, 2) Complementary feeding introduction, as well as the introduction of the different food analysed, follow recommendations established by health authorities in each of the studied countries, 3) It is necessary to insist to infants care responsible about the importance of delaying gluten and cow milk introduction in their diet.
