Abstract:

This thesis explores issues of accessibility, quality, and effectiveness in the treatment by mental health professionals of children exhibiting severe cases of parental alienation syndrome (PAS). It presents treatment options that reflect the most up-to-date approaches, research and extensive experience, and the current knowledge base established by expert clinicians. Hermeneutic research finds the need for increased support, education, and additional resources to enable professionals to provide PAS-informed approaches when working with children and families in high-conflict divorce situations, particularly children presenting with extreme behaviors, including traits associated with psychopathology and mental illness. The author integrates personal experience in seeking to support a loved one who was the targeted parent of a severely alienated child. This heuristic account is based on witnessing a family struggling to find a way out of alienation and seeks to highlight the challenges of this client population.

"Factotum‟, published in 1975, tells the daily life of Henry Chinaski, writer's own transcript, a writer who lives with resignation and weariness after being saved from going to war, and accepts all kinds of rubbish jobs to survive, and to clear his conscience while focused on pursuing what really fulfils him: writing. His self-destructive behavior seems to respond viscerally to a sort of instinctive urge in a universe declining and lacking self-pity. Chinaski is too conscious of his curse, he is destined to live a difficult existence in which he finds people predictable or he simply "do not like" them. For the purpose of the analysis of his writing style, „Factotum‟ and several poems from the anthology „The Pleasures of the Damned‟ will be necessary. It has been said that Bukowski with his terse, brusque and forceful prose, is the atrocious novelist of the great urban jungle: the destitute, prostitutes, drunks, in other words, he is the novelist of the human waste of the American Dream.

Little, F. "The alienated protagonist : Some effects of generic interaction in Middle English literature." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1987. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.383252.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis discusses the effect that the use of more than one genre in a medieval narrative has upon the way we read the character of the main protagonist. Where most medieval writing aligns protagonist and narrative with a single genre, the main texts in this thesis confuse the reader's sense of such an alignment and the resulting generic interaction has the effect of separating the protagonist from the narrative, an effect I have called 'alienation'. This terminology relates to the Augustinian metaphor for the experience of the righteous in a fallen world. It is an image which describes a conflict of semiologies: individuals who operate according to one set of terms in a context which operates according to a different set of terms. The thesis examines the idea that the gaps in the narrative that are created by the alienation of the protagonist - the reader's sense of the protagonist having a meaning which does not work smoothly within his/her narrative context - allow for an interpretation of the character of the protagonist which is more sympathetic to a post- Romantic concept of individuality than is usual in medieval characterisation. Chapter One defines 'genre' and 'alienation' in relation to their application in the thesis, and discusses medieval ideas of individuality and the framework of language available to medieval writers for describing the individual. Two texts are used to illust~ate some of the points made in this discussion: the Confessions of Saint Augustine, and William Langland's ?iers Plowman. The following five chapters each give a reading of one of the main texts. Chapter Two shows how the romance characterisation of Sir Gawain, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, is undermined by penitential and fabliau elements, Chapter Three, how Sir Lancelot in Malory's ~ale of the Sankgreal, is juxtaposed with a hagiographical narrative and an alternative hero, Sir Galahad. In Chapters Four and Five Criseyde, in Chaucer's ~roilus an~_~iseyd~, and his Canon's Yeoman, in the Canon's Yeoman's Tale, are both generically alienated as a mimesis of their---- thematic alienation as traitor and as alchemist. And Chapter Six establishes a working definition of Complaint and shows how Hoccleve, in his Complaint, uses and then transcends the genre's characteristic representation of righteous alienation to demonstrate his recovery from madness. Finally, Chapter Seven looks beyond Middle English to Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and the representation of character in the Renaissance.

Minh, Anita. "Young, alienated, and excluded : youth labour force participation and mental health in Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/52270.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health. Unemployment is generally considered to have a negative association with youth mental health. However, few studies have examined youth mental health in association with being both out of the labour force and out of school (OLFS). I hypothesize that OLFS, a state in which youth are no longer job-searching and are not in school, has a negative association with mental health that is weaker in comparison to that of unemployment, which involves active job-searching. I further hypothesize that socioeconomic status (SES) and recession moderate the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health, such that both unemployment and OLFS have a stronger negative association with mental health in youth of low SES, and during recession. Two empirical studies are presented to test these hypotheses. The first examines whether SES moderates the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health, across three constructs of mental health : distress, depression, and life-satisfaction. The results indicate that unemployment is associated with poor mental health across all mental health constructs, and has a stronger association with distress among low-SES youth. OLFS is associated with depression only, with a stronger association among low-SES youth. Among high-SES youth, OLFS is also associated with better life-satisfaction. The second study looks at the relationship between youth labour force participation and mental health in the periods before (2003, 2005), during (2008-2009), and after the most recent global recession (2010-2012). The findings suggest that the recession was related to improvements in the mental health of unemployed youth but was not clearly related to the mental health of OLFS youth. The concluding chapter highlights the contributions of this thesis, addresses its limitations, and discusses implications for policy makers and for future analyses. Policy makers should consider the association between OLFS and mental health, and the effect modification by SES, when designing programs for unemployed youth. Future research can examine the mechanisms between OLFS and mental health across macrosocial contexts, and over the life course.

Mistry, Z. "Alienated from the womb : abortion in the early medieval West, c.500-900." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317777/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is primarily a cultural history of abortion in the early medieval West. It is a historical study of perceptions, rather than the practice, of abortion. The span covered ranges from the sixth century, when certain localised ecclesiastical initiatives in the form of councils and sermons addressed abortion, through to the ninth century, when some of these initiatives were integrated into pastoral texts produced in altogether different locales. The thesis uses a range of predominantly ecclesiastical texts – canonical collections, penitentials, sermons, hagiography, scriptural commentaries, but also law-codes – to bring to light the multiple ways in which abortion was construed, experienced and responded to as a moral and social problem. Although there is a concerted focus upon the ecclesiastical tradition on abortion, a focus which ultimately questions how such a tradition ought to be understood, the thesis also explores the broader cultural significance of abortion. Early medieval churchmen, rulers, and jurists saw multiple things in abortion and there were multiple perspectives upon abortion. The thesis illuminates the manifold and, occasionally, surprising ways in which abortion was perceived in relation to gender, sexuality, politics, theology and the church. The history of early medieval abortion has been largely underwritten. Moreover, it has been inadequately historicised. Early medieval abortion has been rendered strangely familiar because it has been approached through alien concepts and assumptions, whether pre-medieval, later medieval or modern. Through vigilance against conceptual dangers, a thoroughgoing and sometimes microscopic approach to reading and contextualising early medieval sources, and an interest in bringing the history of abortion into conversation with other areas of early medieval historiography, the thesis seeks to historicise perceptions of and responses to abortion in the early medieval West.

Driesen, Danika. "The alienated religion studies teacher: a case study in Cape Town, South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/25264.

Full text
Abstract:
South Africa's post-apartheid National Policy on Religion and Education instituted in 2003 ushered in a new paradigm for the study of religion in the country's schools. It promotes a programme of teaching and learning about religious diversity that constitute the nation. While this revised policy enabled Religion Studies educators to grapple with new ways of thinking about the study of religion, it still demanded them to assume a standardised role that focused more on their duties and responsibilities of promoting a multi-religious approach in an impartial manner. This homogenous policy image neglected the teachers' interpretations and reality of the profession. Consequently, a gap emerged between the policy-imagined role and Religion Studies teachers' perspectives. This thesis explores the gap between what the national policy expects from the teachers and their readiness for teaching Religion Studies. Rahel Jaeggi's concept of alienation is used to critically analyse the alienating effects of the national policy images' failure in recognising the realities of the profession. Jaeggi provides a renewed framework on the concept that entails critically analysing an individual's social role in terms of how s/he succeeds or fails to appropriate and identify with it. A case study research of eleven teachers who taught Religion Studies in high schools in Cape Town, South Africa was conducted. The findings reveal that the gap disrupted their roles, and resulted in a 'double' alienation for them. It also shows educators integrating their religious identities into their teaching methods, which enhanced their proficiency at teaching the subject and alleviating their 'double' alienation. The teachers' methodologies demonstrate that they are open enough to approach the aims of Religion Studies, and to approach diversity that is not from the national policy's perspective of a distant secular approach, but rather one that opens their own religious traditions to new ones. I argue that despite the Religion Studies teachers alleviating their 'double' alienation to some extent by integrating their religious identities into their teaching methods, they still remained in a state of alienation due to the post-apartheid government's top-down education strategy.

Zuniga, Milton. "Alienated Selfhood and Heroism: A Poststructuralist Reading of John le Carré’s Spy Fiction Novels." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1541.

Full text
Abstract:
John le Carré’s novels “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” (1963), “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” (1974), and “The Tailor of Panama” (1997), focus on how the main characters reflect the somber reality of working in the British intelligence service. Through a broad post-structuralist analysis, I will identify the dichotomies - good/evil in “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” past/future in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” and institution/individual in “The Tailor of Panama” - that frame the role of the protagonists. Each character is defined by his ambiguity and swinging moral compass, transforming him into a hybrid creation of morality and adaptability during transitional time periods in history, mainly during the Cold War. Le Carré’s novels reject the notion of spies standing above a group being celebrated. Instead, he portrays spies as characters who trade off individualism and social belonging for a false sense of heroism, loneliness, and even death.

O'Neill, Clare. "Alienated "Others": the representation of women in the early works of Jean-Luc Godard." Thesis, University of Ulster, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.588590.

Full text
Abstract:
Jean-Luc Godard has long been recognised as a highly influential and innovative director who continues to this day to make radical and challenging films. This thesis examines his portrayal of women as "The Other" in his films made during the period of 1959 to 1966. It examines the characteristics of stereotypical Godardian women, their difficulties with communication, their place in the work sphere, in relationships, in Godardian society and in their environments. It argues that Godard, in his early films, continually presents women as being different from, and inferior to, men in all spheres of their lives. This makes women, by the definitions purported by Simone de Beauvoir, ''The Other" in opposition to the male 'Subject'. This is evinced through his frequent portrayal of women as subordinates. At work the sexual division of labour marginalises Godard's women and as a result they are often pigeonholed in service roles or driven to prostitution. In relationships, Godard shows how men are the dominant partners and often maintain conversational control over the women who lack the ability to articulate themselves and assert their independence. Godard's women are conditioned by a patriarchal society that objectifies and dehumanises them through the obsessive promotion of consumer capitalism, which drives the 'need' in women to maintain a perfect image for the consumption of men. Their environments are bleak and prison-like, with no attempt to escape, and any attempt to reject the values and rules of society characterises them as alienated "Others". The theme of women as "The Other" has yet to be covered in depth by any other academic, and as such the ideas put forward in this thesis not only expand upon the existing criticism of Godard's work but also generate an original analysis of Godard's portrayal of women.

Zimmerman, Kenneth R. (Kenneth Ray). "Technological Thinking in American Teacher Education, 1970-1979: a Hermeneutical Study of Alienated Consciousness." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc332087/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented here is of a sort almost never seen in today's social science work. Attempted here is a hermeneutical examination of teacher education literature of the 1970's, with the goal of revealing what otherwise would and generally does go unseen by most who practice and study teacher education, the tacitly held and taken-for-granted pre-judgements or prejudices which make such teacher education the reality it is. That is to say, the aim of this research is to "go behind what is said" in this literature in order to reveal the questions to which the literature's contents are the answer. This is necessary because such prejudices, such questions, determine in the first place the sorts of answers which can be given, by excluding other questions and points of origin, and thereby structure the form and content of teacher education as it is lived. The more specific purpose of this "going behind what is said," apart from merely revealing such prejudices, is, however, to examine them after they are revealed in order to reach a judgement as to whether or not some portion or, perhaps, all of these prejudices reflect a belief in and devotion to the alienated consciousness of technological thinking. This revelation and this judgement are presented in a chapter of nine sections: Professionalism; Management, Control, and Systems; Humans as Substances; Rationalism, Empiricism, Knowledge, and Morality; Learning, Teaching, and Academics; Education as School; Selling Materialism; Meritocracy and the Perfectability of Humans; Freedom, Participation, Community, and Power. These investigations leave little doubt, it seems, that teacher education and teacher educators in the United States during the 1970's, and by inference today also, are engrossed in and committed to technological thinking as the founding source of such work, and that such belief and commitment threaten not only teacher education as a viable human event but also the entire education "enterprise" as an authentic activity of human living.

This study intends to research the committees responsible for overseeing the alienated assistance during its consolidation process from 1902 to 1925. Our interest is to investigate how these commissions contributed to the changes in the way successive republican governments treat the question of madness, not only from medical knowledge, but also practical issues related to daily limits and responsibilities of its precepts. To do so, this study shall be based on the reports produced by inspection committees from the early years of the twentieth century, at which point the logic of public administration to provide more support from the precepts of science. Hence, the aim is to analyze, in its logic and its contradictions, the Republican government s attempt to control and regulate the alienist practice in Brazil.

de, Middelaer Trevor Adam. "Alienation and control : a study of alienated labour in two Youth Offending Teams across England and Wales." Thesis, Keele University, 2016. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/2393/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an empirical, qualitative, study of nuances of the labour process in the context of Youth Offending Teams (YOTs) and how detectable indications of alienation may be present in the perceptions of front-line practitioners. The study also focuses on government policy and the views of management and trade union officials to gain a broader understanding of factors that affect employment in this sub-sector of the public services. To provide a rich source of qualitative data, 33 interviews were conducted across two research sites, which fall under the operational remit of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB). Initially, the focus of the thesis is structured around political impositions and management regulation of the employment relationship in the wider public services with particular reference to its impact on the organisation of work and work degradation. This is set against previous theories and frameworks of alienation to form an analytical model, adapted from Blauner’s (1964) research, accounting for criticisms of the study from a Marxist perspective. The thesis then provides a contextual grounding of the politicised nature of the youth justice sector and the related criminological debates which affect the perceptions of work and policy from front-line practitioners in YOTs. Interview data is analysed against the theoretical model employed, signified by a broad analytical approach, which not only addresses the effects of a loss of practitioner control of the labour process in YOTs and the related indications of alienation, but also investigates their relevance to wider aspects of the political economy. Findings suggest that alienation is intensified in practitioners when they experience a dislocation between their personal ideals and the prescriptive work practices to which they abide, with their skills and knowledge of front-line practice perceived as undervalued in state and management policy.

Peddie, Bill. "Alienated by Evolution: The Educational Implications of Creationist and Social Darwinist Reactions in New Zealand to the Darwinian Theory of Evolution." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2286.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation explores the reactions to Darwinism in the format and informal education of New Zealand society. The subsidiary purpose is to look at some implications for formal education. Many of the reactions have focussed on distortions of the Darwinian theory of evolution with the form of reaction to Darwinism being centred on different views of humankind. The various group interests have caused different aspects of Darwinism to be highlighted particularly when groups feel their interests are under threat. Using aspects of an "HS3" historical survey technique i.e. the history of the public reaction to an aspect of science and science teaching, key features of this debate are set in context. This context is then used to show that creationist objections and social Darwinian interpretations share many characteristics with their overseas counterparts. A philosophical analysis of the positions taken supports a charge that New Zealand creationist science is partly non science, and partly bad science. It is also shown that confusion has been created when groups have debated issues from different perspectives including cultural perspectives. In particular there has been a lack of communication as various creationist groups, using different research bases, and political, economic and legal institutions, have adopted generalist conservative positions, highlighted metaphysical and ethical considerations and drawn on creationist science literature to support the science of their case while pro-evolutionist groups have adopted specialist liberal or progressive positions, concentrated on the logic and epistemology of the debate and have drawn on mainstream science literature. Finally some implications have been drawn from this analysis of the different reactions, and recommendations have been made for future teaching of evolution and related concepts.

Abstract:
This thesis locates, examines and interprets the written sources of information guiding how delinquent school-aged young people are viewed in relation to their education in Western Australia. The study involved an examination of texts discussing post industrial socio-historical events and currently policy, practice and research in relation to students who are alienated from school, including those who have criminal histories. An exploration of the discourses assembled around the costruction of Western Australian school-aged offenders as alienated students revealed an ongoing assumption that children and youth from low socio-economic backgrounds are often governed as low school achievers who are less likely to complete compulsory schooling. In the documents examined leaving school early was regularly discussed and linked to unemployment, poverty and criminal activity. This thesis presents an interpretation of the role these discourses have played in the construction of Western Australian school aged offenders as alienated students (Gubrium & Holstein 2000, p.503).

Nield, Robert, and n/a. "Alientated students' perceptions of school organizational health." University of Canberra. Education, 1990. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060824.130208.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores alienated students' perceptions of the organizational health of a Year 7 to 10 A.C.T. high school. The study emerged at the theoretical level from a concern that school effectiveness studies focussed too narrowly on student academic attainment as an indicator of an effective school. A broader view of effectiveness would hopefully show that in the case of comprehensive co-educational government high schools, student alienation could have a powerful effect in undermining the achievement of academic goals in such schools. Because these schools have little control over their student clientele and require compulsory student attendance until age 15, it seemed a degree of alienation was inevitable. The task for high school administrators, it was hypothesized, lay in minimizing these alienation levels in order to reduce the impact such student alienation might have on other school effectiveness indicators like teacher commitment, teacher morale and time on task in classes. My experience as a practitioner, in the Student Welfare area of a large ACT government high school, also indicated that the traditional "top down" strategy of much research in the field of Educational Administration that concentrated on the perspectives of principals and teachers only gave one view of the processes within a school. The other, complementary "bottom up" view came from students. In particular, it was hypothesized, the perspectives the most alienated students in a government high school held towards the organizational health of the school might represent an unusual test of school effectiveness. This was because the commitment of such students towards the school and its stated academic goals was most problematic. The promotion of a school "culture" or "ethos" that could integrate low level and high level alienation students, and thereby foster school effectiveness, appeared to be possible only to the extent that high level alienation students could be kept on side or neutralized by high school administrators. These speculations were largely confirmed in this study. Apart from the interaction of sex and year level with alienation, the other major finding was that teacher consideration, or the extent to which teachers show concern for students as individuals, was the only organizational health dimension that produced a significant difference between students on the basis of alienation level. In short, the study is not concerned with student alienation as such. Rather it is concerned with understanding how alienated students perceive a relatively effective school. This would hopefully enable that alienation to be minimized and managed.

The dissertation "Foundation of Educational Evaluation: Alienated Labor and Creative Work" aims to investigate the dominant paradigm of the conceptual theory of Teaching and Learning Assessment in Brazil. It's goal is to investigate if this dominant paradigm is credible to diagnose and guide this educational discipline in the country and at the same time establish the comparative relationship between the theoretical formulation of the evaluation paradigm and this conception in international institutions, national and local environment from a case study. The method applied to research is the dialectical materialism of Marx, aided by epistemology and comparative analysis, as well as statistical and quantitative sample survey. The dissertation makes the assumption that the dominant paradigm of evaluation theory is the same as the theory of education, which has been pointed out by specialized literature as education for work or productivist, or human capital.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the state of human alienation as a consciousness that pervades our destructive, perverse tendencies. This consciousness is readily viewable from the perspective of current environmental crisis. As such, it is proposed that an investigation into the alienated consciousness might reveal both why we dominate and destroy our environment and ourselves, as well as how we might resolve alienation and, by extension, begin to live harmoniously within our surroundings and neighbors on earth. Two texts, Crime and Punishment and Desolation Angels, by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Jack Kerouac, respectively, are exemplary of the type of human alienation discussed in this thesis: that is, the alienation that arises from our perceived existence as neither gods (stewardship) nor animals (beasts). This anomalous state is further revealed through the inclusion of Emmanuel Levinas' Totality and Infinity, which condemns our totalistic trajectory as reinforcing alienation by obstructing the trajectory of infinity, or the proper course of humanity marked by ethics of interconnectivity and diversity. Also included is Mikhail Bakhtin's Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, which helps reveal how ethics of interconnectivity and diversity are arranged in Dostoevsky's work. By reading these texts together, we reveal that alienation is a unique derivative of particular socio-cultural spaces, and that the modernizing human trajectory since the burgeoning of capitalism in 1860s Russia to postwar America has only served to reinforce alienation, thus linking perverse destruction to exploitative societies as marked by the pursuit of material gain. We therefore conclude that keen attention must be paid to the human ego as well as dedication to sustainability through the reduction of excess if we wish to resolve alienation and the domination and exhaustion of resources and diversity that ensues.

This work is presented through the importance of creative activity tensioned to alienated labor, either in social relations or relations with the environment. In it, I tried to focus on the issue of creative activity as a contribution to the political process tied to the principles of a critical, transformative and emancipatory Environmental Education work to aim at overcoming alienation of capital proposed by the company. Its main objective is the investigation of clippings realities symbolically constructed by craftsmen "on Brique Station", especially related to social and environmental changes that prioritize the emancipation of individuals and their future generations in relation to environmental care. Bring, as a theoretical and methodological approach, participatory and qualitative research from the content analysis through analytical and empirical categories, according to Maria Cecilia Minayo, interviews with subject artisans from the city of Montenegro / RS - called "City the Arts. "The theoretical framework that contributes to the understanding of the subject and the object of research is presented mainly from the creative activity in Fayga Ostrower and Environmental Education critical, transformative and emancipatory in Carlos Loureiro, through its quest for overcoming alienation in a society that values forms of reproduction of knowledge and conservation of reality. The research focus has enabled the problem of alienation in contemporary thought István Mészáros and Ricardo Antunes, as a way to meet the need of questioning the reality historically constructed. Marx, in his time, reflects many of the problems of our times and, with the aid of Mészáros, it is possible to unveil the reality from its historicity. Sought research, interviews with the subjects artisans, the relationship between creative activity and alienated labor, as well as their social and environmental impact, as a form of non-formal environmental education, with the expectation that such a process can not exist without thinking subjects and the complexity of their dialogical relations with other subjects and with the world. Thus, the stresses satisfy the research found that while the possibility of non-formal environmental education in that it contributes to the criticality and the questioning of reality. So consider that this tension was always present in interviews and allowed the unveiling of reality from his problematic, mainly through the various problems faced by the protagonists of the interviews, is the search for greater disclosure of your creative work, be it in the search for social and environmental transformations.

In this sense, this work has a main objective to understand not only the process of constitution of psychiatric as a field of specific knowledge about madness, turned into mental illness, but especially surrounding the discourses, practices and political disputes that marked the Assistance alienated in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the First Republic. It aims at making an analysis of the tour as a whole, trying to understand the dispute waged between doctors and nuns, as well as stories and features of each of its establishments and sections characterize the therapeutic activities, the methods used in the treatment of patients, practices everyday experiences, living conditions of the inmates, dissonance and consonance between doctors, officers and employees.

The work of servant-leadership’s proponent, Robert Greenleaf, is thoroughly examined to explain how his understanding of trust as faith is linked to spirituality and this is the key to understanding the character of servant-leaders. Greenleaf’s work is compared with the modern servant-leadership literature and identifies a gap in the literature explaining Greenleaf’s spirituality. This is a qualitative analysis using classical Grounded Theory and uses the work of Anthony Giddens to give it a modern sociological grounding. Classical Grounded Theory uses typologies or “created groups” to give meaning to the way in which participants view their circumstance. The application of Giddens’ work allows for the data analysis to incorporate the historical social context that has shaped the views of the participants. Greenleaf and Giddens share the same understanding of trust and this alignment of Giddens and Greenleaf permeates the work. Giddens identifies two types of trust, which this research has termed Reciprocal Trust, and Trust as Principle. The research gives an explanation of the two types of trust and argues that understanding Trust as Principle is the key to understanding new paradigm thought. It is also the key to understanding character in terms of servant-leadership character. The research for this thesis was carried out in an organisation that until recently had been a government entity and for the purpose of this research is given the fictitious name of Railcorp. The historical circumstances of Railcorp have led to major dysfunctions, which are inhibiting the business progress of the company. There is a crisis of culture and a crisis in leadership. There is evidence of servant-leadership existing in Railcorp and these leaders have a vital role in providing the new leadership required to take Railcorp forward.

Abstract:
This master thesis describes the activities of research applied to three experiences of professional learning of Civil Construction in different schools. The research work is expected to contribute to the pedagogical actions dialogicaly inserted in the three formative processes. The purpose of these actions and contributions are the expansion of autonomy, collective emancipation and the freedom of the students, in the sense of a search for \'desalienation\' of the work they carry out. The pedagogical actions dialogical addressed are as: 1. Activities for \'integral formation of being\', and \'organization of production of Civil Construction\' - experiments in preparation of drawings and construction projects and the questioning of the conditions of social inequality and exploitation of labor - in courses in painting, masonry, electrical, hydraulic installations and decoration, at the Municipal School of Vocational Education in Civil Construction / Madre Celina Polci, Prefecture of São Bernardo do Campo, SP. 2. Activities of approximation of the production process of architecture - experiences of drawing up collective of executive project of architecture and construction, with their own hands, as part of the future area of support of Experimental Construction from the school - as exercises of optional discipline \'Alternative techniques of construction\" of the Graduate School of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo, SP. 3. Activities of re-union and re-integration of the work of project and construction by means of \'house of work\', as a contribution to the training of members of the brigade of construction - composed by students of the National School Florestan Fernandes (ENFF), permanent brigadiers and coordinators from ENFF, professionals guests and collective of students and professionals from the architecture and urbanism school, USP - for the reform of the house of permanent brigade, \'house of green roof\' of the National School Florestan Fernandes - Guararema, SP. The pedagogical actions dialogical demonstrated effectiveness to the step that, at the same time that were seized the various professional activities of construction, it broadened, to varying degrees, the understanding of students and alumni on the limits and barriers imposed by capital on the working class. In this sense, and that remains the search for work \'disalienation\', now that its full realization is possible only by means of social transformation of broad and wide and unrestricted democratization of access rights to ownership, by the society as a whole of products, processes and social enjoyment resulting from the collective work.

“Herbert Marcuse‟s „Reason and Revolution‟ towards a institutional changing‟s dialectic” expounds the philosophical reasons of a revolutionnary‟s praxis. The argument is developed by the reciprocity of two dialectic‟s criteria: the historic understanding of the libertarian aims and of its institutional actuality. The freedom as an ontological category, first criterion, and the political process of human liberation, the second, accomplish the elements of the reciprocity‟s dynamics as expounded in “Reason and Revolution” at 1941. The 1960‟s preface, “A note on dialectic” develops the reciprocity between the freedom‟s consciousness and the process of its actuality, as a alternative discourse instead of surrendering to the establishment. The text also recognizes in the Marcuse‟s work of 1966, the analogy between the essential criteria of the dialectic perspective and the understanding that the affluent capitalism‟s negation demands two types of strategies, one stood by the concept of negation one as a internal power and the other as an external one. The internal negation reveals the unaccepetable contradictions of the capitalist system and the external permits understanding the protest for justice and for the human good, universal values, beyond the capitalist system.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This dissertation aimed to know if the personality traits and human values are able to explain the maternal alienating practices. Specifically, we intended to: (1) develop and know the psychometric parameters of the Inventory of Maternal Alienating Practices (IMAP); (2) verify the confirmatory validity of IMAP; and (3) test an explicative model, in which the personality traits and values are predictors of maternal alienating practices. Thus, we developed three studies with correlational design, ex post facto, and quantitative methodology. In study 1, we aimed to build and know the psychometric parameters of IMAP. Participants were 200 divorced mothers, aged 22-66 (M = 37.12 years, SD = 9.06). After testing the discriminative power of 13 initial items using a Student t test, remained Twelve. Then we proceeded to a factor analysis, identifying, using the PA criterion, a structure composed of a single factor, with all items showing loadings higher than |.30| and Cronbach's alpha of .83. In Study 2, we carried out a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) of IPMA. Counted on a sample by intentional convenience of 189 divorced mothers, aged 20-70 years (M = 37.8, SD = 10.69). The results of the AFC after removal of two items (6 and 11) showed marginally acceptable indicators [χ² = 141.05, χ²/gl = 4.03, GFI = .87, AGFI = .80, CFI = .88 and RMSEA (IC90 % = .12 – .10) = .14, CAIC = 265.89 e ECVI = .96], satisfactory level of internal consistency α = .88, so as the composite commonality (CC = .90) and mean variance explained (VME = .50). It is considered therefore that the objectives of the previous studies have been achieved, given a quality metric of the instrument developed. In Study 3, in an attempt to propose an explanatory model of maternal alienating practices, we sought to identify the correlation between these practices and the personality traits and human values, and also verify the predictive power of these constructs against these practices. Participants were 188 divorced mothers, aged 17-61 years (M = 32.2 years, SD = 9.17). Were performed Pearsons correlation, linear regression to assess predictive power, as has also been proposed a hierarchical model through the software AMOS. The main results indicate that personality trait kindness and values subfunction suprapersonal present correlation with the amaternal alienating practices (r = -.18; p <.05 and r = -.24, p <.05, respectively). From these results, it was found the predictive power of these variables towards the maternal alienating practices, noting its predictor potential front practices satisfactorily. Taking these results as a basis, we tested an explicative model, in which the kindness trait was able to predict the suprapersonal subfunction which jointly explained maternal alienating practices. Thus, the hierarchical model personality traits → values → maternal alienating practices presents satisfactory quality at the adjustments indices, shown through structural equation modeling. In conclusion, the present dissertation objectives were achieved, emphasizing the theoretical framework used for identifying robustly that factors associated with loving characteristics and emotional balance, can consistently help to understand maternal alienating practices.

The doctoral thesis, defended for the graduation in Public Policies from the Federal University of Maranhao, with the Consumation Policies: the consumers protection in Brazil social movement . The goal of the research was to study and understand the institutional influence achieved by the movement from the 1988 Constitution s dispositions as well as the 1990 Consumer s Protection Code. The main problem of the doctoral thesis was to know if whether the social movement was somehow responsible for the diffusion, claim and establishment of the consumer s rights in Brazil, at the end of the 20th century. As secondary problems, the following questionings arose: a) how the workers acquired rights to become the current consumers?; b) how the Brazilian consumer society was formed?; c) how was the consumer s protection movement expressed in Brazil?; d) what are the characteristics of the consumer s rights and the National Policy of Consumption Relations? To answer, a research following the dialectical method based on the Karl Marx and other authors who followed his general orientation, from several currents and shades concepts of capitalism, merchandise, alienation, market, capital-gain and worker. At the end of the 20th century in Brazil, the thesis was the defense of the free market and free competition, based on the principles of contractual freedom and linking force of what was legally agreed. As the antithesis was the social movement for the consumer s defense, that defended changes in the constitution regarding consumer s rights and the connected public policy. As a synthesis of this conflict, the 1988 Constitution approached the theme, and soon after, the Consumer s Protection Code itself in 1990. From the shock, constitutional provisions were created followed by its codification as a synthesis of the earlier opposites conflict, leading to a new consumer conscience supporting consumer awareness and consumption relationships policies. The secondary hypothesis were answered, confirming its assertive that: a) alienation though consumption solidified the basis of the capitalist social unit; b) slowly, a consumption society was created in Brazil based on the dependence of transnational companies; c) several consumer protection movements and public administration offices articulated and organized to create a consumption policy; d) the consumer protection policies were established based on the protection of the disadvantaged, the vetting of abusive and surprise clauses, the linkage between advertisement and product, consumer s education, nature protection, the participation of associations and use of class action suits. Finally, the main hypothesis was considered, leading to the conclusion that the consumer protection social movement was responsible for the establishment of Brazil s public consumption policies, at the end of the last century, especially with the creation of the consumer s protection in the 1988 Constitution and the establishment of the National Policy of Consumption Relations in the 1990 Consumer s Protection Code.

Abstract:
The abstracts of the report examine a difficult phenomenon for the child, one of his parents and society - parental alienation, which is committed by the other parent; it is indicated that the Ukrainian criminal and criminal procedure legislation can be called loyal to violators. Thus, the victim, witnesses, investigator and other law enforcement officers have significantly fewer rights and state guarantees than the suspect, accused, defendant or convict. The need to criminalize parental alienation is pointed out.

Since the 18th century, capitalism has been commonly considered the most primary motivation for pushing human beings' social civilization and progress. Nonetheless, with the advanced development of material life, people's index of happiness still doesn't proportionally escalate. Instead, people become more and more indifferent and isolated. This piece of thesis starts from searching for the relationship between "material abundance" and "alienation of human hearts", discovering the phenomenon that the model of modern neoliberalism has put everyone in society into respective danger so that it's hard for people to control a true and sincere interrelationship among one another. What's worse, the press and the media further fortify the current state of affairs of "The Society of the Spectacle" in the period of late capitalism through the means of TV news, advertisements, and popular culture, shaping the social reality of laying emphasis on entertainment plus groupthink while making light of independent, and critical thinking. With this level of understanding, I then set out to think about how to express my own protest against the "alienation of human hearts" in a capitalistic society by means of film and image creation. By first analyzing Staged Photography and Surreal Photography, both of which are different from the conventional way of narration full of Pictoriality in the filed of Straight Photography, and then by further exploring all kinds of metaphors in the artist Jeff Wall's works of images, from the facet of their forms to their contents, I was tremendously inspired so that I decided to compose my work via Surreal Photography, i.e., the way of "disrupting the connection with reality". The image features the subject of the "empty shell(an invisible man)", indicating alienation and Objectification and also symbolizing modern people's Universal.

The mixed media creation named “Exotic, Alienation, Disorder” is created to explore the writer’s mindset through three dimensions composed of space, psychology and behavior. As a foreigner, the writer dedicated to describing the experience and phenomenon happened when staying outside of hometown. From space dimension, the writer merged what she has seen and learned from daily city life of two different countries into the writer’s art work and seized the chance to search for more visual possibilities to combine with the writer’s artistic creation. Theoretically, the dissertation adopted the form and the usable material of eastern and western artistic creation as reference. The core value of the dissertation stemmed from what the writer felt regarding of extreme social actions, various mindsets and observable trends happened around the writer’s exotic life. The dissertation was divided into five chapters. The introduction began as the first chapter to illustrate the writer’s motivation, purpose and method toward the dissertation. The second chapter demonstrating the theory and references the writer quoted in the art works. The third chapter described what the writer has seen and felt toward the extreme social phenomenon and how the writer merged these experiences into the artistic creations. The fourth chapter was the design notion and the experimental process of “Exotic, Alienation, Disorder”, and could be classified into two series by creation materials. First series was called “From Exotic to Depression” which adopted the cyanotype method as the core design technique and the second series was called “From Emotion to Disorder” mostly composed of conceptual art works designed by multiple techniques and was shaped in the form of video, installation, photography and so on. The last chapter would organize the writer’s different mindsets, make conclusions of the dissertation and further inspect the difference between the ideal and the realistic concept of the art works and finally expressed the writer’s future expectations toward artistic creations.

Abstract:
The Eeny Meeny Miney Mo (EMMM) Foundation founded an online support group for individuals impacted by parental alienation. The current mixed-methods study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the online support group in supporting its members. To achieve this, an online support group moderator participated in a semi-structured interview. Seventeen male and 23 female online support group members completed the Group Climate questionnaire, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale -21 item (DASS-21), Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM) and Brief COPE (BC) Questionnaire at baseline (t1) and 3-month follow-up (t2). Participants’ SAM Challenge, BC Active Coping, Emotional Support, Informational Support, and Planning scores significantly reduced over a 3-month period. However, DASS-21 scores did not significantly change between t\(_1\) and t\(_2\). Qualitative themes revealed that the support group experience was very positive, supportive, and comforting. Participants reported obtaining psychoeducation, support, information, validation, understanding, and hope. Participants recommended increased online security and provision of other types of support (i.e., clinical and legal). In short, this online support group is a good first “port of call” for individuals experiencing parental alienation. Future recommendations include training formal peer workers for this platform and identifying ways to promote this online support group to adults who were alienated as children.

It is expected to present ideas developed from the different influences of the modern technology and my observations and to present thoughts form the positive and negative effects that Internet has brought. My inspirations came from analyzing art works of historical and contemporary artists, and their aesthetics performance and creating context. By these studies, I also investigate the links between the cloud technology and the changes of the phenomenon within social hierarchy. There are two main research purposes: 1. To appreciate the living convenience brought, and 2. To discuss the alienated human correlation caused by the cloud technology. Through the three creation directions, “crazy wave of cloud technology”, “living convenience of cloud technology, “alienated human correlation caused by the cloud technology”, with eighteen works. The study is divided into five chapters: The first chapter is the introduction of research motivation. The second chapter is the literature review to show the development history of polymer clay as creation material. In the third chapter, I hope to create the concept and visual performance through my life experiences and my inner world. Chapter four is the interpretation of my works, describing the techniques, and analyzing the display creating concepts. Chapter five is to make conclusion. This is a story about writing myself in order to solve the dilemma. Even at the beginning, I didn't even think I would write myself in such a situation under such circumstances. Because I'm afraid that others see the real one, I am truly "being" in the relationship with the other. So in the text, I can only show up with a kind of incompleteness or conceptually change another word, metaphorically replay the cleverness behind those contexts. It can be said that the entire paper is difficult for me, I constantly resist in every moment trying to write close to myself. This sometimes stagnant and sometimes forward paper shows a portrait of my current life just right. That is my inner conflict and consumption often forced me unable to move. The full text is divided into three stages and topics: alienated child, fake bird and rootless tree. "Alienated child" wrote about the break between family members and I in my childhood. Follow the mother's hostility and hatred for kinship and thereby I alienate and even isolate myself. And the sadness that was denied and alienated in the face of severe physical punishment from the father. So the child clings to the sense of security and waits for the parents who have not returned at night. "Fake bird" wrote about my falsehood before the high school second grade education. I tried to play a role in the expectation of others to please them but I ended up being confused about not myself. After the fourth year of elementary school, the character "Soujirou" took over my childhood hate. I took the attitude of "survival of the fittest" and grew up different from the appearance of inferiority in the past to whip up myself against the outside world. "Rootless tree" wrote about how I deal with intimate relationship after adulthood, through the stories with the four women, I look back at the imagination and the mode of response in my relationship. The person I was intent to rely on and hard to stand on my own, parasitic outside and unable to grow on my own, looking for love outwards and always asking for it but constantly lost in finding love, just like the hedgehog who was willing to stand inside a high wall and waiting for love to come near to rescue. But I didn't want to lay down my guard and do my best to escape the high wall. My inner evasion, dependence or aggressiveness, greed often cannot move because of the restriction and internal friction of each other. By writing the thesis, when such a one I know these restrictions, I also know the freedom beyond the border. I gradually retrieve ability which exists in my own to improve and control myself, and I admit that no matter what part of myself, their duties are in fact no different. Just like I have very different writing status although present before and after the thesis, I am still walking on the way of accepting and closing to myself. In the thesis, when I accept myself in these parts. Outside the thesis, I must also be able to practice the capabilities of my own parts, start to live well.

Alienated People in the Surreal Land - Based on Artist’s Unconscious -Wei-Hsin Hung’s ceramics creation Abstract The focus of this thesis is on author’s creation- “Alienated People in the Surreal Land” created from 2005 to 2008. Through creation, on the one hand, the author explores the inner self and transfers her unconscious into artwork; on the other hand, the author interprets the alienation, struggle, and strangeness of human. Throughout this process, the author achieves the goal of exploring self-unconscious and collective unconscious and refers to related theories based on the creation process and results. The background, motives, and purpose of creation are detailed in the first part. The author would like to explore her unconscious world as well as focus on the inner parts of human beings. The author not only did literature review of unconsciousness, surrealism, and expressionism, but also explored the relationship among artwork, dreams, and unconscious. The author probed the interaction between individuals and collective unconscious conducted analysis on the language of forms regarding the figure creation in ceramic art field. In the second part, the author further elaborated the ideas, forms, and materials of the artwork. The author tried to find the commonality of human nature based on both life experiences and observations of social phenomena. The author presented the image of alienated people living in the surreal land based on her unconscious and dreams. The background and features of artwork are fully explained in the artwork forms part. The forms of artwork are mainly human figures, expressed in a metaphorical and symbolic way to project the alienated people living in the surreal land. Moreover, the author also introduced the techniques of ceramic artwork and what she learned from the work. In the third part, the author made serial analysis on the artwork and gave in-depth exploration. The artwork represented the creation rationale and what the author has been through throughout her life. In this part, the author not only consolidated on the findings of inner self discovery, but also shared how the artist and artwork interact. In addition, the author also detailed the interaction and feedbacks from the viewers during the artwork exhibition. Last but not least, the author consolidated all the findings throughout the creation process and feedbacks from the viewers during exhibition and refers to the related theories for further exploration to achieve the aim of this research.

This thesis is written by a job coach, who refuses to be alienated, narrating a story of a front-line worker trying to help the mentally ill. Starting from her working experience in a hospital in Taipei and re-examining the corresponding events happened therein, the researcher attempts to figure out a structure of power exercising beyond job coaches by a Medicine and Labor mixed system and repel to the trends of “professionalization” and “alienation” by re-telling the true story her had. Moreover, the researcher wants to transform the “marginalized location” into a horizon of freedom for a supplement of energy to job coaches in Taipei city. Since the author is the actor in this research field, I should switch between the researcher and the actor repeatedly. Extracting from my different frames of work experience, three topics are covered in this thesis. They are “The Transition of Imagination of My Profession”, ”The Method and Posture of Knowing the Institution where I live”, and ”The Possibility of a collaborative action”. In the first topic, I want to discuss a progress that makes an inner change of professional identification by outer restrictions. Secondly, I want to look into mechanisms that discipline the front-line worker when I were getting to be familiar with this institution. To help the mentally ill getting better jobs, I try to find some partners to strike out the limitations set by the current system after accumulating the experience and ability to handle the administrative affairs. The three topics seem separated, but, in fact, they respond to a question coherently: “alienation.” In the modern society, front-line workers have gradually lost their personalities and become tools in order to perform programs for the purpose of institutions, instead of clients. On the contrary, I worked hard to resist becoming a tool and wanted to fight with this system. This thesis is intended to record the processes and changes. Besides of resistance of being aliened, the researcher also discovered the energy of the front-line workers, and re-thought the definition of “professionalization”.

Leung, Sai-Wing. "The making of an alienated generation : the political socialization of secondary school students in transitional Hong Kong." Phd thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/128706.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we argue that the four presuppositions of the consensus model of political socialization are empirically unfounded. Neither are Marxist approaches to political socialization supported by empirical evidence. We thus propose our dissensus model of political socialization: due to process variation, life cycle variation, generation variation, and social variation, the outcome of political socialization could be dissensus. Likewise, socialization of alienation is as equally possible as socialization of allegiance. The so-called socialization of alienation, our theoretical framework, refers to the accentuation of the socialization process by political events such that people are sensitized to political reality and thus feel alienated. From a historical review of political socialization in Hong Kong in the past four decades, we found that because of the immigrant nature of Hong Kong population, there was an anti-Communist China sentiment which was kindled by a series of political confrontations between the Chinese Government, the Hong Kong Government and local Chinese during the transition of Hong Kong from a British colony to a Special Administrative Region Government under the sov~r.eignty of China. Growing up in this turbulent transitional period, the young generation of Hong Kong has been socialized to be alienated from the Chinese Government. To study this process, we conducted a case study of a secondary school (including interviews of the teachers and the students), a society-wide survey of secondary school students, and a mail questionnaire survey of sampled school teachers in 1988 and obtained four data sets. On the basis of analyzing these four data sets, we found that there was a benevolent image of the Hong Kong Government but a malevolent image of the Chinese Government. However, the event effect on the socialization of alienation was only salient in a subsample, which thought the most important contrast between Hong Kong and China was the market system, but not visible in three other subsamples. There were hints that students might be socialized to be alienated by parents and stereotyping. Because of the depoliticization and trivialization of civic education in secondary schools, we found that secondary school students were not implanted with any political identity. Interestingly, in the "market system" subsample, more civic education helped to heighten the alienation from the Chinese Government. We also found that a prestige school environment, a senior secondary education, and the school subject, Government and Public Affairs, are three saljent factors in producing political alienation. From the eight strata of our sample, we found that the most alienated group of students were Form 7 arts students from symmetrical schools. The widespread alienation from the Chinese Government was found to be related to students' pessimistic view of Hong Kong's future, an atrophying sense of political community (more opted for migration and took an apathetic attitude towards future political participation), and a rising sense oflocalism (more identified with Hong Kong and rejected Chinese officials taking up positions in both the public and private sectors of Hong Kong). After the June 4th 1989 Incident, this widespread alienation must be fueled to the extent that the legitimacy of the SAR government and the political identity of the younger generation of Hong Kong would be in doubt.

Templer, KM. "Recommendations for best evidence based practice responses for parental alienation : a psychological and legal perspective." Thesis, 2015. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/23548/7/Templer_whole_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Parental alienation occurs when a child is unreasonably influenced by a parent’s unwarranted views of the other parent, leading to unnecessary refusal or resistance of a relationship with the targeted parent (Garber, 2011). The child will align themselves with the preferred parent without justification, with their behaviour often driven by false beliefs (Bernet & Baker, 2013). There is a current lack of literature regarding effective practice to aid psychologists and courts in terms of supporting the alienating parent, targeted parent, and child. A systematic literature review was undertaken which aimed to identify evidence based practices in response to parental alienation and to develop a set of best practice recommendations for professionals working with families affected by parental alienation with a psychological and a legal perspective. Medline, PsycInfo and Embase academic databases were searched from their inception until August 2015. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and conference abstracts were also searched. Articles published in English reporting outcomes relating to an intervention for parental alienation were included. A total of nine articles met criteria for the current review. Broadly, interventions fell into five different categories: change in custody and individual or family therapy/mediation; custodial transfer only; multi-modal family intervention; parallel group therapy; and reunification programs/ retreats/ workshops/ camps. Recommendations suggest that changes in custody to the targeted parent are effective in restoring relationships, and that where there is court involvement, a family therapy approach further helps to reduce distress and improve child-parent relationships.

Abstract:
Background: Parental alienation (PA) is a phenomenon that occurs among families during and after separation. It can be defined as the influence of one parent over a child to turn him or her against the other parent (Bernet, von Boch-Galhau, Baker, & Morrison, 2010; Garber, 2011) without legitimate justification (Bernet & Baker, 2013). The child is encouraged to refuse or resist a relationship with the other parent, the targeted parent, and align themselves intensely with the other, the alienating parent (Garber, 2011). The experience of the targeted parent is under-researched. Although some studies identified common emotions experienced by targeted parents such as frustration, stress, fear, powerlessness, helplessness and anger at the constant interference by the alienating parent (Baker, 2010b; Baker & Andre, 2008; Baker & Darnall, 2006; Vassiliou & Cartwright, 2001 ); this literature relies on the reports from children and mental health and legal professionals rather than the views of targeted parents themselves. In addition, most of these studies have small sample sizes with data predominantly from United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Aims: This thesis aimed to explore, identify and describe targeted parents' experiences of being alienated from their children, the consequences and their coping mechanisms from their own perspective. This research provides a greater understanding of targeted parents' experiences and needs, and may aid in the development of future appropriate support services and intervention programs. Methods: This thesis consists of three related studies. Study One is a systematic review of the literature following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalysis protocol, PRISMA-P (Shamseer et al., 2015). The study was registered in PROSPERO, ID= CRD42017062533 (Booth, Clarke, Ghersi, Moher, Petticrew, & Stewart, 2011 ). The findings were analysed using "guidance on the conduct of narrative synthesis in systematic reviews" (Popay et al., 2006). Study Two (exploring participants' experiences of PA) and Study Three (exploring the consequences of the alienation on participants' and their coping strategies) employed a qualitative descriptive design (Sandelowski, 2000), and used a purposive sample by criterion sampling method (Patton, 2002). Participants were recruited through advertisement in the media, online support groups and psychology and legal practices who agreed to advertise the study on behalf of the researcher. Fifty-four selfreferred targeted parents alienated from their children participated voluntarily in the studies. Data were collected through a demographic survey developed by the researcher and in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted in person, via telephone or Skype. The interviews were audio recorded for data accuracy purposes and transcribed verbatim. Each participant was provided with a copy of their transcript to give them the opportunity to modify or confirm the information provided. Data were analysed thematically and inductively following the six phases proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006): familiarisation with the data, generation of codes using NVivo-11 (QSR International, 2015), searching for potential themes, reviewing the themes, defining and naming the themes and weaving together the narrative and data extracts contextualising the analysis to existing literature. Trustworthiness strategies (Lincoln & Guba, 1985) were used to ensure the quality of the thesis such as: peer debriefing and members checking (credibility); purposive sampling (transferability); audit trail, code-recode procedure and peer examination (dependability); and reflexivity (confirmability). Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Tasmania's Social Sciences Human Research Ethics Committee (Ethics Ref No: H0015333). Results: Study One demonstrated the lack of studies focusing on the views of targeted parents. Only 11 % of articles pertaining to PA focused directly on targeted parents, with only 3.6% describing their characteristics and experiences from their own perspective. In addition, gaps in the literature regarding the experiences and consequences of targeted parents and their coping mechanisms used to deal with the alienation were identified. Study Two found that targeted parents were equally likely to be mothers and fathers and family violence was found to be a key aspect of the alienation process. The targeted parents in this study were active in their efforts to maintain a relationship with their children despite alienation. Moreover, extended family members and schools could also be alienators. Study Three found that targeted parents suffer ambiguous loss and disenfranchised grief manifested as psychological difficulties. Targeted parents described experiencing sadness, distress, frustration, anger, guilt and shame. They appeared to be at risk of suicide thoughts/attempts, and they tended to engage in negative automatic thoughts. Their social networks had been affected by the alienation however, they were involved in different types of activities that work as coping strategies. Conclusion: This thesis has shown PA is not bound by geographical borders and the experience of targeted parents is universally the same. This thesis adds valuable information that can be used by practitioners working with targeted parents. Understanding targeted parents' experiences of PA involves understanding how they feel, how they behave and how they think about being separated from their children. Targeted parents are active in their attempts to reunite with their children. Targeted parents can be considered survivors of family violence perpetuated by the alienated parent and their allies. As such, targeted parents can present with symptoms of trauma. There appears to be specific events that trigger the alienation. Understanding these events and the sequalae of these events is important in the development of prevention programs. In conclusion, this thesis allows for a greater understanding of targeted parents' experiences of parental alienation. It also illustrates how targeted parents' lives are affected in a range of ways including ongoing emotional pain, displayed as psychosomatic symptoms of unresolved grief, placing them in need of appropriate psychological interventions.

Abstract:
This theoretical study attempts to reflect the general problematic of modern society in complexity, the gradual constitution and development of estranged being as well as the contemporary effort to interconnect being as an integral whole. The study also contains an analysis of altered states of consciousness, which are understood as a certain means to view the world as integrated. We use the notion of consciousness to define the altered states of consciousness. The structure of the thesis is divided into five chapters. While the first chapter is focused on description and analysis of alienation and other negative aspects of modern society, the second chapter is based on this reflection of the crisis of western society. Its subject is the work of several scientists who contribute by their works to a qualitative change of the mechanistic and materialistic conception of the world and who promote holistic approach to reality. The key topic of the third chapter is phenomenon of consciousness and interdisciplinary theories of consciousness. We deal also with the qualitative altered states of consciousness, that offer some potential. The fourth chapter concentrates on the history and methods of research of altered states of consciousness and delineates their basic characteristic and their functions. The...
