Abstract:

Abstract:

LABURPENA: Atzerritarrak barneratzeko zentroak establezimendu publikoak dira eta helburu hau dute: Espainian legez kanpo egon edo sartzen saiatzen diren atzerritarrei buruzko administrazio-ebazpenak (kanporatzea, itzulketa edo itzulera) betetzen direla bermatzea. Izaeraz eta helburuz espetxeak ez badira ere, zentro horietan barneratutakoen eta administrazioaren artean sortutako araubideak antzekotasun handiak ditu espetxeen araubidearekin. Lan honetan, zentro horien araubidea aztertzen da, hain zuzen. ABSTRACT: Alien Internment Centres —best know by their Spanish abbreviation CIES— are public establishments dedicated to ensure the fulfilment of the administrative resolutions deciding on the expulsion, devolution or returning of foreigners either already illegally in Spain or willing to enter the country illegally. Neither their nature nor their finality is to serve as penitentiary centres. Nevertheless the legal functioning of CIES and prisons share some similarities. The aim of the present essay is to analyze their legal status.

Abstract:
Fair warning to the reader: Culture of Death: The Assault on Medical Ethics in America, by Wesley J. Smith, is hard for me to review. I work at Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke's Medical Center, where in April 1989, Rudy Linares removed his son, Sammy, from a ventilator at gunpoint. I took the criticism hard and was critical of others who were in the outcry. In fact, some of the people Smith criticizes are people with whom I had differences. Yet, Smith's views are so harsh and alien to my understanding of the culture and practice of healthcare that I find them off-putting. Further, he and I participate in the same listserv, where I often disagree with his postings.

Abstract:
In this essay, we marshal resources from a range of biblical, trinitarian and soteriological commitments, set within a broadly Barthian framework, to offer a doctrinal proposal for the Spirit’s role in the triune God’s work of at-one-ment. We argue that the Spirit plays a vital role in the atoning work of the triune God, as the Spirit is the love of God directed toward the incarnate Son a two-fold manner: (1) in the mode of wrath against our sin born by Christ our representative, and (2) in its mode of blessing in the resurrected and ascended Christ, the exalted one in whom we receive the promised Holy Spirit. Seen in this light, Christ’s death and resurrection was God’s two-fold act of love in the Spirit: the two-fold means of making our representative, Jesus, a fit receptacle for the promised Holy Spirit, that in him all the peoples of the earth might be blessed through his recapitulation of Israel. Key to this thesis are two commitments: (1) seeing a changing economic relationship between Jesus and the Holy Spirit integral to Jesus’ recapitulation of Israel, and (2) viewing wrath as a mode of God’s love, and therefore a part of, rather than something alien to, the work of the Spirit. With these doctrinal resources in hand, we have the necessary conceptual tools to affirm that the Spirit, just as much as the Father and the Son, is the one who saves us in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Back in early 1982, a mate in New Zealand wrote to me describing, in a very excited manner, his research into cultural aspects of Maori people, especially with respect to the poetry relating to funeral rites. Concurrently, I was completing the Multicultural Education Diploma, and fostering an infant interest in aspects of Australian literature dealing with the immigrant experience and cultural difference (viz. Judah Waten’s Alien Son, and Nancy Keesing’s Shalom). Whilst I had not at that stage successfully made the link between such literature and its effective use in the educational process of students of non-English speaking background, I remember thinking that perhaps I should soon pursue a course which would lead me to an understanding of Aboriginal Australians, in some way similar to Terry’s pursuit in New Zealand.

Abstract:
Whole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman is the convergence of two issues: the first focuses on the Yoruba priest Elesin, who represents the embodiment of the mythology and the history of the people; the second concentrates on the “sterile, existential wasteland” (Ralph-Bowman, 1983) of the white colonialists. The two issues come into conflict in the sacrifice of Elesin’s European-educated son, Olunde, whose death represents a significant and uncom promising affirmation of Yoruba cultural tradition. The sacrifice ofolunde, though appears as metaphysical, is entirely secular and practical. Hedies to preserve the safety of his community and his action can be appreciated as a form of martyrdom. Olunde’s sacrifice symbolizes an act that asserts the value of higher duty against both the internal threat of materialistic self-interest and the external threat of an imposed alien culture.

Abstract:
Hans Emmanuel Enoch (1896–1991) was born in Hamburg, the son of a manufacturer of sera and vaccines. Upon his father’s death, he took charge of the Hamburg Serum Werke. Following the rise of Hitler, he came to be pilloried in the Nazi press for allegedly having poisoned the population of Hamburg and was imprisoned for a time. He immigrated to England in 1935 where he had secured a position with the International Serum Company in Norwich. Following the outbreak of war, he was interned as an enemy alien, eventually ending up in Canada. In 1941, he was permitted to return to England, but wartime conditions prevented him from continuing to manufacture sera. At about this time, penicillin was making the headlines, and coupled with accounts of its miraculous properties, was the news that all production was reserved exclusively for the armed forces. Enoch decided to meet the public clamour for penicillin by producing a crude version which he termed ‘vivicillin.’ News of this spread globally, and he came to incur the disdain of Howard Florey for the attendant publicity. Notwithstanding this, vivicillin was to prove itself effective and its use led to the saving of lives.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the ongoing discussion of modern Chinese identity by pro-viding a case study of Cheok Hong CHEONG. It necessarily considers Australian atti-tudes towards the Chinese during the 19th century, not least the White Australia Pol-icy. The emergence of that discriminatory immigration policy over the second half of the 19th century until its national implementation in 1901 provides the background to the thesis. Cheong was the leading figure among Chinese-Australian Christians and a prominent figure in the Australian Chinese community and the thesis seeks to iden-tify a man whose contribution has largely been shadowy in other studies or, more commonly, overlooked by the parochialism of colony/state emphasis in many histo-ries of Australia. His role in the Christian church fills a space in Victorian religious history. Although Cheong accumulated great wealth he was not part of the Chinese mer-chant class of the huagong/huaquiao traditions of the overseas Chinese diaspora of the 19th and 20th centuries. His wealth was accumulated through property investments following the spectacular collapse of the Victorian banking system during the 1890s. His community leadership role arose through his position in the Christian Church rather than, as was generally the case, through business. His English language skills, resulting from his church association, were the key to his role as a Chinese community spokesman.¶ Cheok Hong Cheong left an archive of some 800 documents in the English lan-guage covering the major people, incidents and concerns of his life and times. His Let-terbooks, together with the archives of the various Christian missions to the Chinese in Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shed light on one person’s life and more broadly, through his involvements on the complex relationships of Chinese emigrants, with the often unsympathetic majority of Australians.¶ This is a case study of a Chinese identity formed outside China and influenced by a wider set of cultural influences than any other Chinese-Australian of his time —an identity that justifies the description of him as an ‘Alien Son’. Cheong’s story is a con-tribution to the urban and family history of an important ethnic sub-group within the wider immigrant history of Australia.¶ While Cheong remained a Chinese subject his identification with Australia cannot be questioned. All his children were born in Australia and he left just twice after his arrival in 1863. He visited England in 1891-2 and in 1906 he briefly visited China. Identity and culture issues are growing in importance as part of the revived relation-ship between the Chinese of the diaspora and the economic renewal of the People’s Republic of China and this thesis is offers a contribution to that discussion.

Abstract:
The tensions analyzed by Leo Marx in his 1964 essay The Machine in the Garden: Technology and the pastoral ideal in America, between the American Arcadia as a land of original purity and the trope of industrial threat is ghostly present throughout the works of both poets at stake in this dissertation: William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) and Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997). In this research I intend to analyze the processes by which the poets manage to claim ownership of their land in spite of the lurking mechanic apocalypse. Writing, each in his own time, both poets endeavor to reclaim the original historical and spatial meaning of their continent, by devising an autochthonous language that would provide a new “point of view” and a new “point of voice”, as means to prophesy a collective future for the nation from their personal “local” anchorage in their natal New Jersey. Striving to “make a start out of particulars” they intend to escape the vastness of the continent by focusing on the minute details surrounding them in their own garden state. The correspondence between the two poets also questions the periodization of literary movements, too often conceived as a series of breaks and schisms. The Garden State, metamorphic space covered with the remnants of industrialization provides us with a way to break free from the shackles of such categorization : from modernism to the Beat Generation

Abstract:
Current and the next decade they will be identified in the time as group of the most excellent concerns with the ambient quality of the planet. Subjects as global heating and the eminent loss of the amount and quality of the water are argued constantly. A more specific ambient problem has worried specialists in the world all, including Brazil. One is about the large-scale dissemination of exotic species. The subject has been treated in the half academic as biological invasions and it is not only restricted to the plants. The study presented here it at the time deals with a trees species with great dissemination in the country and used in urban areas and beach bands due to proportionate shade of the summer. The occurrence of the singapure almond in protect areas of integral protection can represent a threat to the species for the occupation of the space. The identification with scientific methodology of the germination characteristics and reproductive success had been the form to evaluate the threat degree that the species represents for the environment of restinga. Thus, this study it had the objective to determine the potential of biological contamination of the singapure almond (Terminalia catappa L.) through the analysis of the index of germination speed (IVG), average time of germination, average speed of germination, frequency of germination, germinability (G%) and analysis of the tax of survival and transistion of seedly, young and adults. The results indicate that the seeds of the species can germinate in ample band of temperature, mainly, will be the full sun. Pulped fruits had presented greater speed and tax of germination. Seedly had presented high tax of comparative mortality to adult and youngs. The necessary species was concluded that to be removed of the area of restinga, therefore, although to be considered established, in favorable conditions it will develop itself occupying the niche of other local species.

This research is based on a case study, rise the application of partnership management methodologies between non-governmental organizations (NGO) and companies. From this point, a bibliographic revision tried to present the partnerships evolution on companies side and intersectorials, which is the object of this research. It tried too evaluate the demand factors which enforce NGO as companies partner emphasizing a potential synergy framework verified by some authors. The research used the James E. Austin (2001) collaboration continuunm dimensions framework, who is a reference due his research and the theories about partnerships between NGO and companies. From the case study, unique type, which represents the typical NGO universe, it was observed the circumstances and conditions a NGO would have applied methods of relationship management by his own, and identify what are the strength points and challenges the NGO faced to maintain this relationship management process. Then, it was observed that the dimensions presented by Austin are consistent on the management structure in a NGO, but it suffers by the informal management style of its more valuable and intangible resource: the partners.

Abstract:
Four forage grasses from botanic alien species - Tripsacum dactyloides, Axonopus scoparius, Panicum maximum and Melinis minutiflora - were found in a fragment of Forest Dense Ombrófila Submontana in process of recruitment, in an urban environment in Blumenau, Santa Catarina state, in the South of Brazil. The vegetation of this forest area was inventoried. The classification of the natural regeneration of secondary vegetation showed a predominance of medium sucessional stages. In initial sucessional stages, herbaceous plants were found among non-native forage grasses. The species Melinis minutiflora and Panicum maximum were found along the border of the fragment, close to highways, isolated and not forming large clumps. Both are recorded in the invasive alien species database managed by the Horus Institute for Environmental Conservation and Development (www.institutohorus.org.br), part of the I3N invasive alien species thematic network, a component of IABIN (Inter American Biodiversity Information Network). Tripsacum dactyloides and Axonopus scoparius don't appear in such a bank, which includes Brazil. Both species were assessed through the software developed by the I3N invasive alien species thematic network, the Risk Assessment Tool for the Establishment and Invasion by nonnative species. The data assessment on Tripsacum dactyloides shows that it poses a high risk for its potential in becoming an invasive species. There was no conclusive resulted about the species Axonopus scoparius due to the inadequacy of information available on the species.
The current study analyzes the birth and development of two strategic alliances established between shrimp producers in Rio Grande do Norte: the Unipesca and the Coopercam. To achieve this aim, two approaches which, at first sight, could be considered contradictory were used: the Transactional Costs Economy and Embeddedness. The first approach is fundamentally based in the studies of Williamson (1985; 1991; 1996; 1999; 2000; 2002). Embededness, on the other hand, went through the review of a series of authors, such as Burt (1992), Granovetter (1973; 1985), Uzzi (1997), Gulati (1994; 1995; 1997; 1998; 1999; 2000), Nielsen (2005), Ring (2002), Ring and Van de Ven (1994), Zafirovski (2002), among others. To analyze the birth and development of the cooperatives in this study, Gulati s work (1998) was used. This study shows the steps to be studied for a better comprehension of an alliance: the decision of starting an alliance and the choice of the partners, the decision about the governance structure, the evolution of the alliance and the development of the companies which established this partnership. To carry this study out, a study case accordingly to Yin s proposal (2001) was adopted. Semi-structured interviews with pre-defined plots were conducted in two phases: in the beginning of 2006 and in the beginning of 2007. The subjects from the research were, in 2006, representative members of the main associations and corporations, besides the shrimp producers from the state, when the context of the activity was set. In the second phase, in 2007, representative members from the two cooperatives that were listed above were interviewed the president from Coopercam and the marketing manager from Unipesca. Besides these two members, directors from two important organizations in each of these cooperatives were also interviewed, giving out the necessary information for the research. Secondary data was also collected from the Brazilian Association of Crab producers website, as well as from news from important newspapers in RN, such as Tribuna do Norte. The primary data was analyzed in terms of quality, accordingly to the documental analysis technique. Thus, through the data that was collected, it can be concluded that the reasons that motivated the companies to cooperate can be explained in terms of the transactional costs economy. However, the choice of partners is more connected to aspects approached by the social embededness. When aspects related to development and evolution were analyzed, it could be seen that both aspects from TCE and Embededness were vital to explain the development of the cooperatives mentioned

Abstract:

Abstract:
Scott became enthused about continuing the Alien films and began planning several. For his next feature film project, he decided on the film that became Alien: Covenant, returning to presenting the name of the series in the title. The story follows a group of colonists looking to create a world better than the one they had on earth. When they reach their new home, the Alien makes its presence known and begins killing off crew members one by one, just as in the original film. Also as in the inaugural movie, there is a strong female character who takes charge and again is responsible for destroying the Alien. Scaring the audience is still a priority, which led to the film’s big success at the box office.

This chapter looks at a conversation with Ross McIntire, the casket-maker's son, during lunch at an upscale sandwich shop in Naperville, Illinois. By all rights, the village on the banks of the DuPage River should be perfect digs for an aspiring young actor and playwright like Ross McIntire. Yet he talked about how he does not belong there, even after the successful debut of his one-act play about small-town life, Blight, at North Central College where he has recently completed a theater major. Home for the casket-maker's son is Galva, Illinois, an hour and a half west. Up until his recent graduation, Ross wore the cap of college student. While the casket-maker's son appreciates his four years living in Naperville as a college student, the place is alien to him in many ways.

Abstract:
In the summer of 1953, aged 7, I arrived with my father at the port of Southampton from the colony of Nigeria. We were making for Ledsham Court School, a boarding school in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex. It was a stately building sitting among many green acres. After about an hour with the headmistress, Mrs Redfarn, my father said goodbye, turned and returned to Nigeria. I did not know then that I would not see or hear from him for 10 years, by which time I had forgotten what he looked like. Ledsham’s only black pupil began his academic life speaking no English. I was duly placed in the kindergarten with daily lessons in the native tongue. After catching up with my age group, in addition to the core subjects I was thereafter given instruction in Latin, ancient Greek, poetry, and nature study. To eradicate ‘that funny African accent’ I was solely accorded a daily class of elocution for a year—one hour a day with a speech therapist, held in a long, oak-panelled gallery with a book on my head to improve my deportment. Although in receipt of the beginnings of a good classical education, I was also given what I came to understand was a prototypical quantity of punishment for a ‘darkie’—for most of that first year I was caned daily and frequently ‘sent to Coventry’ for the slightest indiscretion, usually for not understanding the customs and traditions of an alien white culture. Thus, for refusing to eat salad on my first day, I received ‘three of the best’. The staff were undoubtedly ignorant of the eggs that parasites can lay on raw vegetables in a tropical climate like Nigeria, where all vegetables were cooked and salad was unheard of. Perhaps, I thought with a child’s naivety, that with all the mosquitoes and eating of salad, no wonder West Africa was called the white man’s grave in my books and comics. I woke up—for I had clearly landed in the mother country in the wrong skin colour. It hurt. I had arrived knowing myself to be Yoruba. Suddenly, I was called ‘coloured’ and ‘darkie’.

Abstract:
In 1860, the “legatees of the second class” (mainly the extended family of Samuel and Edmund Townsend’s children) were freed and relocated to Leavenworth, Kansas. The Townsends expected that they would be able to purchase land in Kansas with the money from Samuel Townsend’s estate; when war broke out and the Confederate government prohibited its citizens from sending money to “alien enemies” in the United States, however, S. D. Cabaniss was forced to cut off contact with the freed Townsends. During the war, some of the Townsend women sought financial security by working as domestic servants or pursuing further education. Other members of the family, such as Samuel’s son Wesley and Edmund’s son Woodson, shunned their local Black communities out of a sense of superiority based on their mixed-race ancestry and promised inheritance. Yet they still experienced discrimination, and in 1864, Woodson was falsely accused of rape by a white woman and was imprisoned in Leavenworth.

Abstract:
<p>SOM recently completed engineering and design for Bangalore International Airport Terminal 2. Several Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination tools were developed in response to this expansive project. The visual programming language Dynamo, was used to improve the quality assurance and control of BIM processes, including the generation of complex roof geometry for the airport. A tool has also been developed for interdisciplinary collaboration with the architecture team, where room and department data is leveraged to populate intelligent structural loading maps. A final tool provides visual maps for verifying geometric consistency between BIM and analysis models, flagging areas where the two models do not align. Furthermore, the mapping of structural elements between the two programs allows large batch design of structural elements and automatic assignment of design results back into the BIM model, avoiding time consuming markups and errors in transcription. Further development of this tool has brought the entire mapping process into the BIM environment, improving the user experience. The paper will address the project challenges that spurred these developments, the design and methodology of the tools, and future developments to improve their functionality.</p>

Abstract:
This article is a report of the change made in the teaching and learning methodology of the topic Approximate Probability Distributions, in the framework of the subject Probability and Statistics, given in the undergraduate courses of the Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Entre Ríos, Argentina. In order to achieve better learning processes, two GeoGebra teaching tools were developed and used in both theoretical and practical classrooms to solve a series of problematic situations. It is perceived that the activity allowed spaces in which the student had to question the implementation of certain resolution methodologies, which usually develops mechanically without asking if the procedures used align with the theoretical foundations.

Abstract:
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) contracted with Booz Allen Hamilton to conduct a non-destructive structural assessment of the 2000 and 3000 series rapid transit rail cars. The main goals of the assessment were to identify any significant changes that have occurred to key elements of the car body structure since their date of manufacture and to confirm that no significant and obvious structural deterioration or damage exists. The methodology behind selecting a small representative sample of cars is discussed as an introduction to this work. The paper then discusses the process by which several critical areas were selected for non-destructive inspection. One of the biggest challenges in successfully completing this project was not interfering with WMATA’s fleet operating requirements. The use of WMATA facilities had to be coordinated to create minimum interference with WMATA’s daily maintenance activities. Also, the inspection work had to be planned in such a way as to minimize the amount of vehicle component disassembly in order to return the vehicle to revenue service as soon as possible. The inspections produced valuable results regarding the construction and condition of these cars. The structural welds of the car appear to have performed satisfactorily through the operational life of the cars to date without any significant deterioration. Some corrosion was noted in the door opening areas of the cars, particularly at the door thresholds. The findings of this report will be used to target specific areas of the car during the upcoming mid-life rehabilitation project.

Abstract:

Though urban morphology has typically addressed studies of form in cities, with emphasis on historical cases, diachronic comparative studies are still relatively rare, especially those based on quantitative analysis. As a result, we are still far from laying the ground for a comprehensive understanding of the urban form’s model of change. However, developing such understanding is extremely relevant as the cross-scale interlink between the spatial and social-economic dynamics in cities are increasingly recognized to play a major role in the complex functioning of urban systems and quality of life. We study the urban form of San Pedro de Ate, an informal settlement in Lima, Peru, along its entire cycle of development over the last seventy years. Our study, conducted through a four-months on-site field research, is based on the idea that informal settlements would change according to patterns similar to those of pre-modern cities, though at a much faster pace of growth, yet giving the opportunity to observe the evolution of an urban organism in a limited time span. To do so we first digitalize aerial photographs of five different time periods (from 1944 to 2013), to then conduct a typo-morphological analysis at five scales: a) unit, b) building, c) plot, d) block, and e) settlement (comprehensive of public spaces and street network). Abstract:
"The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) promotes the competence-based assessment using varied, diverse and innovative assessment tools. In this sense, in previous teaching innovation projects we have developed rubrics to align the evaluation with the competences that the student needs to acquire. Moreover, we have explored how to strengthen the G15 competence of critical thinking using social networks because we observed is the competence that our students need to reinforce most. However, we have observed in our agricultural engineering students, that if they forgot to bring their device to the center, did not usually have alternative digital resources, and others did not have any account on social networks. Despite the young people in Spain recognize an intensive use of electronics, the 90% of them own 2-5 electronic devices, they little use them for learning purposes. Taking into account that digital resources and social networks are tools increasingly used by companies, we consider the need to explore bring your own device teaching method. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) initiatives allow students to bring their own mobile devices (laptops, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, etc.) to their centers, and connect them to a Wi-Fi network, to access institutional and educational applications and services. This experience can be a good preparation for the working context that the students will face soon. The aim of this teaching innovation project was to use BYOD initiatives to evaluate, using e-rubrics and social networks, the competences that students need to acquire. The methodology included i) the creation of a subject practice using social media to strengthen the critical thinking competence, ii) the design of a rubric using CoRubrics to assess the practice, iii) the teacher evaluation of the practice and self- and co-evaluation by the students and iv) the analysis of the results and of the teaching-learning process. The results show that high school students had the least access to mobile devices. Undergraduate and master’s students in Agronomic Sciences initially brought their devices when requested and with the progress of the course, they brought it regularly. Not all students use social networks regularly and they value their use in the practice that brings them closer to the professional sector. The teachers concluded that the project provides varied, diverse and innovative assessment tools aligned with the competence-based assessment promoted by EHEA."

Abstract:
Tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) involves care for casualties in armed conflict from one’s own service (e.g., U.S. Marine Corps), other services (i.e., U.S. Army, Air Force,), allied forces, adversaries, and civilians. To minimize injury and preserve life, medics perform TCCC which includes casualty retrieval, stabilization and documentation, transport, triage, and treatment. In future scenarios, delays in evacuation are expected to require extended care including prolonged field care (PFC) over hours to days, increasing the potential for complications such as bloodstream infection (sepsis). Most medics have only simple equipment and essential medications and will need assistance at point of care to make decisions on how to treat more complex cases and perform procedures in an austere setting. We describe a project for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) over 3 years to develop and evaluate the Trauma Triage Treatment and Training Decision Support (4TDS), a real-time decision support system (DSS) to monitor casualty health. The operating 4TDS prototype uses the Samsung smart phone and tablet certified for use in the Department of Defense (DoD) Nett Warrior program. Connection to a simple VitalTag (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA) vital signs monitor placed on a casualty at point of injury (PoI) will stream patient data including heart rate, respiration rate, peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Nurses, technicians, and physicians can use the tablet to display an expanded data set including lab values while providing care at a Battalion Aid Station (BAS) and Field Hospital (FH).4TDS includes a Machine Learning (ML) model to indicate shock probability, risk of internal hemorrhage, and probability of the need for a massive transfusion. The shock model was trained on Mayo Clinic Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patient data, then evaluated in a 6-month “silent test” comparing shock prediction with actual clinician diagnoses. The model only uses 6 vital signs, which is suited to battlefield care, while other published results include lab tests (e.g., lactate), and produces a Receiver Operator Characteristic Curve (ROC) of 0.83 for shock detection. The model only decreases by 0.05 90 minutes, identifying shock probability well before its onset. Medic reviews indicate a 30-minute advanced warning would be more than sufficient to initiate treatment.Medics who provide PFC may need to perform life-critical procedures such as shock management, cricothyroidotomy intubation, and transfusion that may not have been used for an extended period. 4TDS includes refresher training in how to perform such a procedure, as well as whether to perform the procedure. Usability assessments with healthcare providers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force at Joint Base San Antonio, TX have demonstrated 4TDS and its capabilities align with TCCC practice. Schutt, Timothy, and Manoj Shukla. Predicting the impact of aqueous ions on fate and transport of munition compounds. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41481.

Abstract:
A model framework for natural water has been developed using computational chemistry techniques to elucidate the interactions between solvated munition compounds and eight common ions in naturally occurring water sources. The interaction energies, residence times, coordination statistics, and surface preferences of nine munition related compounds with each ion were evaluated. The propensity of these interactions to increase degradation of the munition compound was predicted using accelerated replica QM/MM simulations. The degradation prediction data qualitatively align with previous quantum mechanical studies. The results suggest that primary ions of interest for fate and transport modeling of munition compounds in natural waters may follow the relative importance of SO₄²⁻, Cl⁻ ≫ HCO₃⁻, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ > Ca²⁺, K⁺, and NH₄⁺.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Stratigraphy, facies heterogeneities, and structure in the Montney Formation of northeastern British Columbia: relation to H2S distribution. Full text
Abstract:
In the last decade, the Lower Triassic Montney Formation of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) has undergone significant development, providing a rich dataset to study structural, stratigraphic, and facies control on the variations in hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas content. Splitting the siltstone dominated Montney into the three regional members (i.e., Lower Montney, Middle Montney, and Upper Montney) allows for detailed analysis on the enrichment of H2S within a local-scale study area in northeastern British Columbia (BC). Within this study area, Upper Montney H2S content increases within individual parasequences both up-dip and towards the east. In addition to potential up-dip migration, there may be greater sulphur-bearing components in the east, allowing for the sulphate reduction required to generate H2S. The overlying Middle Triassic thins eastward, providing proximity to the overlying anhydrite-rich beds of the Upper Triassic Charlie Lake Formation. Further, the overlying Middle Triassic Sunset Prairie Formation has an erosional edge that corresponds with eastern elevated H2S concentrations within the Upper Montney unit. Mapped structures are syn-depositional to the Middle Triassic, potentially providing conduits for early sulphate-rich fluid migration. In the Middle and Lower Montney, elevated H2S generally occurs with proximity to the top of the Permian Belloy Formation. Within this study area, limited Lower Montney data is available and thus needs to be further corroborated with regional data. Both the Middle and Lower Montney display elevated H2S in trends that generally align with mapped faults. The faults may have acted as conduits for sulphate-rich fluids to migrate during early burial then migrate laterally through facies that may have been permeable during early burial, such as the carbonate-rich facies at the boundary between the Middle and Lower Montney. Further core and isotope analyses are required to fully understand this relationship.

Abstract:
Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.

Abstract:
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international comparative study of student achievement directed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). TIMSS was first conducted in 1995 and the assessment conducted in 2019 formed the seventh cycle, providing 24 years of trends in mathematics and science achievement at Year 4 and Year 8. In Australia, TIMSS is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the state and territory governments. The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries in order to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. TIMSS is based on a research model that uses the curriculum, within context, as its foundation. TIMSS is designed, broadly, to align with the mathematics and science curricula used in the participating education systems and countries, and focuses on assessment at Year 4 and Year 8. TIMSS also provides important data about students’ contexts for learning mathematics and science based on questionnaires completed by students and their parents, teachers and school principals. This report presents the results for Australia as a whole, for the Australian states and territories and for the other participants in TIMSS 2019, so that Australia’s results can be viewed in an international context, and student performance can be monitored over time. The results from TIMSS, as one of the assessments in the National Assessment Program, allow for nationally comparable reports of student outcomes against the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians.
