Abstract:

Ren, Jennifer. "Disappearing Out of Existence: An Examination of Identity in East of Eden." Steinbeck Review 20, no. 1 (June 2023): 60–72. http://dx.doi.org/10.5325/steinbeckreview.20.1.0060.

Abstract:
Abstract In John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, Cathy Ames is initially identified as a monster. However, both Cathy and Steinbeck reveal the disarming normalness of her psyche. Scholars tend to simply accept the label of “monster” without fully examining the formation of Cathy’s identity. To truly understand Cathy, it is important to examine her connection to Alice—both the Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Alice Trask. My paper will examine the formation of Cathy’s identity through the millennial lens of perspective. In the twenty-first century, people are increasingly trying to see things from other people’s perspective. However, more than half a century ago, Steinbeck was already questioning how tolerant or judgmental people should be in labeling another person’s identity. He creates Cathy to be a horrifying monster who unexpectedly has the qualities of a fictional child, Alice in Wonderland, and a meek housewife, Alice Trask. Furthermore, both Alices contain the key to Cathy’s deepest desire—the anti-monstrous desire to disappear out of existence. By connecting Cathy’s story to the two Alices, Steinbeck shows how elusive yet familiar another individual’s identity can be.

Abstract:
According to Gilles Deleuze, the underground world of Alice in Wonderland has been strongly associated with animality and embodiment. Thus the need for Alice's eventual climb to the surface and her discovery that everything linguistic happens at that border. Yet, strangely, in spite of the claim that Alice disavows false depth and returns to the surface, it seems that it is precisely in the depths that she finally wakes from her sleepy, stupified surface state and investigates the deep structures, the rules of logic. In this investigation, Alice questions many formal structures, such as causality, identity, reference and the rules of replacement. She discovers that Wonderland does not generate consequential conduct; in fact, it generates no conduct whatsoever! In other words, when it comes to consequences, Wonderland may not be all that wonderful. Yet, we do not live in Wonderland and therefore, our actions have consequences. The question this poses is, why organise language so as to escape causal relations and why choose the little girl as emblematic of this organisation?

Abstract:
ALICE is a multi-media framework for ICALI programs that is being developed at Carnegie Mellon University. It is not a single instructional program, but rather a set of tools for building a number of different types of ICALI programs in any language. The central components of ALICE are (1) a set of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools for syntactic error detection, morphological analysis, and generation of morphological paradigms, (2) a set of on-line text, video, and audio corpora that serve as sources of realistic, in-context examples, and (3) an authoring language that allows teachers to configure the NLP tools and excerpts from the corpora into ICALI programs. This paper describes the NLP components of ALICE and the role of excerpts from corpora in treating student errors.

Abstract:
Deconfined strongly interacting QCD matter is produced in the laboratory at the highest energy densities in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. A selection of recent results from ALICE is presented, spanning observables from the soft sector (bulk particle production and correlations), the hard probes (charmed hadrons and jets) and signatures of possible collective effects in pp and p–Pb collisions with high multiplicity. Finally, the perspectives after the detectors upgrades, taking place in the period 2019–2020, are presented.
