Arnavas, Francesca. "Cognitive Alice : Lewis Carroll's Alice books in dialogue with narratology." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22070/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation’s main purpose is twofold, on the one hand it gives new insights into the construction and meaning of Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, on the other hand it makes a contribution to the field of cognitive narratology, furnishing a complete practical example of the application of cognitive narratology’s tools to a relevant literary work. I take the Alice books as a case study to illuminate the working of cognitive narratology as an interdisciplinary project, relying both on classical narrative studies and on methods taken from the cognitive field. This focus also serves a synthetic view of cognitive narratology itself, which is in its essence a combination of the revaluation of classic narrative concepts and the introduction of new ones. A useful theoretical concept to give a general understanding of my methodology as the tying together of different overlapping approaches, is the idea of the Alice books as a cognitive playground, a huge mental landscape where different intellectual suggestions and speculations coexist with experientiality and affections. Wonderland and the Looking-Glass land are thus presented as fantastical cognitive playgrounds where different minds interact with each other creating the big and complex aesthetic space of the literary text. Each of my chapters examines a specific topic in relation to the minds of the author, the readers and the characters. After a preface and a first chapter outlining the main theoretical currents of cognitive narratology and pointing out the special fit of the Alice books for this kind of analysis, the subsequent chapters are: “Virtual Alice”, “Mirrored Alice”, “Emotional Alice”, and “Unnatural Alice”, each of them offering different, although interconnected, insights into the peculiar dialogue which can be established between the Alices and the cognitive narratological approach.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises three sections. Section One is a novel Silhouettes of Alice, divided into four parts. Parts I and II are set in the fifties and sixties, and Part IV is set in the twenty-first century. The novel highlights the formative years of a girl's life from the age of five to twelve years, leaving home at twenty, and later, at mid-life, getting divorced and starting over. Section Two is a collection of twenty poems that form part of the creative writing component, a new work entitled Country Girl. Section Three is an essay on Views from the Veranda: Visual Maps of Place, Culture and Identity. This area of research highlights the veranda as a significant cultural contribution to the Australian way of life, place and identity. The veranda is featured in both manuscripts, and is integral to themes of love, home, friendship and familial guardianship. In the essay, by utilizing several authors' works, I discuss how the veranda acts as a caesura, a pause on the edge of the house, a reflective space where families interact, educate, communicate, and socialize. The research into the veranda, especially Philip Drew's work Veranda: Embracing Place, has facilitated my inquiry into the social, physical and cultural significance of the veranda. The essay also utilizes Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, primarily for theoretical insights into spatial environments, and his philosophical and metaphysical theories on intimate places where the mind rests, evoking the imagination, memories and daydreams - the writer's essential tools .

Abstract:
This work presents the measurement of the J/ production with pT > 5 GeV/c at midrapidity (|y| < 0.7) with the ALICE experiment in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions, using the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) triggered events. This measurement is very important due to the possibility of studying models that predict the heavy quarkonium production, and it also provides baseline results to be compared with the J/ production in PbPb, where the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is formed. This measurement was separated into 4 pT bins in order to reproduce a J/ pT spectrum. The differential cross section (d2/dpT dy) results achieved were: 0.42 ± 0.11(est.) ± 0.13(sys.) b GeV/c for pT between 5 and 7 GeV/c, 0.18 ± 0.03(est.) ± 0.04(sys.) b GeV/c for pT between 7 and 9 GeV/c, 0.041 ± 0.008(est.) ± 0.008(sys.) b GeV/c for pT 9 and 11 GeV/c and 0,014 ± 0,003(est.) ± 0,005(sis.) b GeV/c for pT between 11 and 14 GeV/c. These values are compatible with Non-Relativistic (NRQCD) and Color Evaporation model (CEM) predictions. Besides, they are also compatible with results from ALICE (low pT ) and with ATLAS results (for pT > 6 GeV/c). This work also shows the measurement of the fraction of non-prompt J/ (fB). The results were: fB = 0,267 ± 0,114 (hpT i = 7,15 GeV/c), fB = 0,338 ± 0,116 (hpT i = 10,7 GeV/c), fB = 0,271 ± 0,087 (hpT i = 8,5 GeV/c), which are compatible with ATLAS results. The last study made in this work was the feasility of the measurement of J/ in Pb-Pb collisions for pT > 6 GeV/c, using the EMCal L1 Gamma trigger. Considering events from the centrality region 20-60%, 93 ± 16 J/s were reconstructed.

Navin, Sparsh. "Diffraction in ALICE and trigger efficiencies." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/2961/.

Full text
Abstract:
ALICE is built to measure the properties of strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, taking advantage of the low pT acceptance in the central barrel, ALICE is playing an important role in understanding pp collisions with minimum bias triggers at LHC energies. The work presented in this thesis is based on pp data simulated by the ALICE collaboration and early data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A procedure to calculate trigger efficiencies and an estimate of the systematic uncertainty due to the limited acceptance of the detector are shown. A kinematic comparison between Monte Carlo event generators, PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8 and PHOJET is also presented. To improve the description of diffraction in PYTHIA, a hard diffractive component was added to PYTHIA 8 in 2009, which is described. Finally a trigger with a high efficiency for picking diffractive events is used to select a sample with an enhanced diffractive component from pp data. These data are compared to Monte Carlo models, and the results are summarized with an estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract:
Approximately twenty years have passed since the beginning of concentrated investigations on the evolution and ecology of skates. The evidence generated thus far suggested that this monophyletic group have experienced multiple, parallel adaptive radiations at a regional scale. This background represented the guiding light of the work described in this thesis, where two main themes were developed. The first one focused on the investigation of Raja miraletus L. species complex through the analysis of genetic variation derived from both mtDNA and nuDNA. The results presented herein assessed the presence of a restricted gene flow and different degree of divergence between the South African and Mediterranean samples. Despite the high species diversity characterising the Family, most Rajidae show a stable gross morphology and peculiar dorsal pigmentation patterns, which may have been implicated in cryptic speciation. Nonetheless, the adaptive value and the genetic basis of these traits remain poorly investigated. To fill this gap, this thesis also describes the application of RNA-sequencing technology on recently diverged skate species with sibling and sister phylogenetic relationships. Therefore, the second goal of this research consisted in investigating the molecular basis of pigmentation in five non-model species. To this end, the transcriptome profiling of different skin tissues was performed using the Illumina platform, whereas longer sequencing data were obtained from R. miraletus multiple organs using the Ion Torrent technology. After the assembly of a reference transcriptome and the mapping of Illumina reads, the Differential Gene Expression between skin tissues across species was performed, revealing the expression of transcripts mainly related to metabolic process and catalytic activity in which pigmentary genes appeared involved. This work could be considered the basis for future studies aiming to disentangle how pigmentary traits evolved in skates and other chondrichtyans.

Somerville, J. Christine. "Stories and storytelling in Alice Munro’s fiction." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25523.

Full text
Abstract:
References to stories and storytelling appear throughout Alice Munro's five short story cycles: DANCE OF THE HAPPY SHADES, LIVES OF GIRLS AND WOMEN, SOMETHING I'VE BEEN MEANING TO TELL YOU, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? and THE. MOONS OF JUPITER. This thesis contends that stories--mentioned briefly or recounted at length--provide counterpoint to experience for Munro's characters. Oral and written stories influence them throughout life, but especially in youth, when they eagerly identify with, and imitate, fictional figures. In LIVES and WHO, storytelling becomes central because their protagonists are a writer and an actress. Occasionally, the narrators in all five works reflect on the difficulty of expressing truth in fiction, but SOMETHING raises this issue repeatedly. By embedding stories within her narratives, Munro imitates the workings of memory; moreover, she draws attention to her narratives as texts rather than glimpses of reality. A feminine perspective on narrative gradually emerges, in which the woman narrator sees her task not as imposing order, but as discovering order that already exists.

Senosi, Kgotlaesele Johnson. "Vector boson production with the ALICE detector." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27310.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to study and investigate the production of massive vector bosons (W+ and W−). This a priori mentioned production is not sensitive to hot nuclear matter effects because of the weak coupling nature of these vector bosons. Thus, in heavy ion collisions they provide a good reference for the medium-induced effects on other probes. The production mechanism of these vector bosons is highly isospin dependent and thus they are affected by the initial state effects. Initial state effects include isospin, Fermi motion, EMC effect, shadowing and nuclear absorption. Hence their production in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions can be used to test some of these initial state effects. In this thesis only two of these initial state effects will be considered namely, isospin and shadowing (referring to shadowing and anti-shadowing). Eke, these vector bosons can be used to provide a non-arbitrary reference to the probes affected by the medium. Traditionally, in heavy ion collisions, hard processes are expected to scale with the number of binary collision thus a precise study of these vector bosons can be used to test the factorisation assumed in models used to determine centrality. This unique property of electroweak (W) bosons makes them essential probes to study the possible inherent bias in centrality determination. In proton-proton (pp) collisions, their production can be used to obtain information on quark parton distribution functions (PDF). The data used in the analysis was collected by A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ALICE detector is designed to study ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which a hot and dense, strongly-interacting medium is created. The production of W bosons is studied in p-Pb, p-p and Pb-Pb collisions at 5.023, 8 and 5.023 TeV centre-of-mass energies, respectively. The forward muon spectrometer with the pseudorapidity acceptance −4.0 < ŋ < −2.5 is used. W bosons are studied via the inclusive single muon differential pT spectrum.

Hami, Iman. "Alice Walker's womanist fiction : tensions and reconciliations." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/16683/.

Full text
Abstract:
A theory formulated by Alice Walker, womanism focuses on the unification of men and women with Nature and Earth. This thesis explores womanism with regards to its specific concerns with African American women’s rights, identities, and self-actualisation, and points towards its more overarching concerns with human relations and sexual freedom, as expressed in each of Walker’s seven novels. The seven novels discussed in the thesis are The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), Meridian (1976), The Color Purple (1982), The Temple of My Familiar (1989), Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992), By the Light of My Father’s Smile (1998), and Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2004). Although Walker introduces the term “womanism” in 1983, this thesis traces the development of the concept across her canon of fictional works. By analysing the novels written in the 1970s, I establish how the term came to be coined, and, by seeing through themes and issues addressed early on and how they can be mapped through analysis of her later works, I demonstrate how womanism went on to be further developed and complexly wrought. This thesis thus examines how Alice Walker’s own theory of womanism is reflected through the oeuvre of her fictional works, and considers where tensions arise in her application of what is intended to be a universalist, humanist, project. For, in many of her novels, it is women’s sexuality and sexual power that are the focus, often at the cost of developing the potential of male characters’ equivalent attributes. However, as will be argued, it is in Walker’s later, less appreciated, works that womanism is more fully developed in its universal claims. The integration of spiritual themes and concepts into her narratives reduce or remove the tensions that arise in the reconciliation between woman and man, as well as between humanity and nature.

Tabalaza, Nomthetho. "The impact climate change on rural households in Binfield village." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/20626.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate change poses a major environmental challenge, due to its adverse effects on human settlement patterns and food security. The global phenomenon upsets seasonal shifts, leading to changes in planting dates and weather patterns. This unpredictability has severe and adverse effects on farmers and rural communities, as variable environmental factors govern activities related to daily sustenance and food availability. The kind of rapid and intense climate change that South African rural spaces are experiencing now, increase the likelihood of extreme weather events such as droughts, heat waves and floods. There are growing concerns that the rural poor will be unable to adapt. Rural livelihoods are therefore facing overwhelming and extensive environmental threats, while rural dwellers are finding it difficult to adapt and cope. As a result, climate change can thus be described as one of the most complex and dangerous environmental problems challenging rural livelihoods today. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of climate change on rural poverty at Binfield village in the Eastern Cape and to identify the livelihood activities practiced. Furthermore, the research was conducted to ascertain how rural livelihood activities are affected by climate change and identify and assess the effectiveness of adaption strategies employed by the households. The research also aimed to explore and establish further adaptation strategies. This study made use of a qualitative research method. Babooa (2008) argues that qualitative research is concerned with stories and accounts including subjective understandings, feelings, opinions and beliefs. The study used both primary and secondary data for data. The researcher adopted interviews and field observation for primary data whilst secondary data was sourced from journals, articles and internet sources. O‘ Leary (2004) describes the interview as a method of collecting data where the interviewer asks the Interviewee open-ended questions. The questions were based on the key areas of interest. Qualitative research methods are aimed at understanding the rich, complex characteristic nature of human phenomena. Qualitative methods are concerned with understanding human behaviour from the participant‘s own frame of reference.

Abstract:
This thesis studies, through comparison, the grotesqu e found in the manuscript by Lewis ,jer. In view of the difference between their narrative fields, the specific traits of each medium were taken into consideration, and it was recognized how both the writer and the film director developed aesthetics in their work. To refine the analysis, some aspects were selected: the beginning of the stories, the White Rabbit character, the size changes through which Alice goes, the joining together of hu mor and horror, and the ending of the tales. We remark how these elements, so distinguished in Carrolls manuscript, echo in the work of the surrealist filmmaker, leading him to the creation of a film capable of masterly increasing the elements in the aesthetic of the grotesqu e, establishing a creative dialogue with the writer from the Victorian era.

Abstract:
All students shall receive the support they need in school to be able to develop and reach their full potential. This study was conducted on the basis of examining what that kind of support can look like and how well it’s working. Through observations and interviews, a case study involving a gifted student in mathematics has been carried out in order to examine the support, how well the support is developing the student’s mathematical abilities as well as how the student herself perceive the support. The student is educated by a tutor in a small group along with another student. The observations shows that the support for most part meets the development areas needed to develop the student’s mathematical abilities, despite the lack of work on problem solving and mathematical discussions. The student considers that the support of the tutor has contributed to making mathematics challenging and fun again. The study shows that teachers' expertise and adaptations to the individual's needs and desires are the most important to get support for gifted students to work.

The present research investigates the different forms of translation in the narratives of Alice Walker, analyzing the process of interlingual and cultural translation of the works The Color Purple and The Temple of My Familiar, as well as the intersemiotic translation of the book: The Color Purple. The choice of the object of analysis was based on the desire to ascertain Walker's writing of denunciation, which seeks to subvert the woman's position as being dominated, through a "womanist" perspective, realized through black feminism. In the first chapter it is possible to verify the marks of the postcolonial literature, since the narratives fictionalize questions such as: identity, sexism, racism, misogyny, nature exploration, memory and myth, decolonizing the narrative, through a counterhegemonic attitude, Investigates indigenous and African cultures, as well as the cultural hybrids that originate mestizo characters, subjects of interlacing. The second chapter examines the interlinguistic translation and, finally, the third examines the intersemiotic translation of the novel The Color Purple for the cinema. For this, it is used theorists who study black feminism, translation theories and the postcolonial literature such as Bonnici (2002), Spivak (2000), Bakhtin (2009), Velasco (2012), Bhabha (2002) , Said (1995), Canclini (1990), Walsh (2008), Beauvoir (1969), Hooks (2000), Butler (1990), Newmark (1987), Octavio Paz (1971), Campos ), Stam (2000), Diniz (2005), et al. Thus, it was found that the interlingual translation of English into Portuguese and into Spanish was domesticated, since translators failed to translate the non-standard variety of blacks from the southern United States into their respective languages. In relation to the film transcription, Steven Spielberg seeks to be faithful to the novel, adapting to the film issues such as black feminism, Celie and Nettie loyalty, Celia and Shug Avery's homosexual relationship, and the empowerment of Celie.

Abstract:

Ibison, Mark. "ALICE tomography section : phase-space measurements and analysis." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2013. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/13193/.

Full text
Abstract:
The technique of phase-space tomography applies the principles of tomographic re-construction to the diagnostics of particle accelerator beams. It is one of the few methods capable of mapping phase-space in detail, using instrumentation commonly available on research accelerator beam-lines, that is, beam profile imaging and variable focussing magnets. This thesis studies the effects of space-charge in the particle bunch on the measurement of transverse phase-space, in the horizontal and vertical dimensions, by the beam tomography method. It applies a novel `comparative' method of using quadrupole tomography scanning to look for these effects, over the length of the diagnostic section of the injection line which transfers the electron beam from the ALICE accelerator to the Electron Model for Many Applications (EMMA) ring at the Daresbury Laboratory. Simulations of the full tomographic process, from beam profle imaging to reconstruction, are developed in the particle tracking code GPT. These are used to investigate space-charge effects, in support of the experimental studies. The concept of `normalised phase-space' is described, in the context of tomography with a very limited number of views, presenting its advantages as applied to a specific type of reconstruction algorithm, the Maximum Entropy Technique. Recommendations for future work in this field are suggested, with possible application both for new machines at the Daresbury Laboratory, and at other accelerator facilities.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents another adventure of Alice through more than a century of pictures and conversations (and what is the use of a book without pictures and conversations?, thought Alice to herself). The travel departs from the boat trip where the story of Alice was first told, arriving to the adventures of the girl in the web-land in contemporary world. The illustrations by John Tenniel and Lewis Carroll present the Victorian Alice, contrasting Carroll\'s influences of romanticism and pre-Raphaelism with the caricatures and intertextual procedures of John Tenniel\' illustrations. In a second moment the girl jumps from the book of children\'s stories to the book of poetic images, traveling through a maze where she will find several surreal Alices. Femme enfants, collages, poetic images, metamorphosis, surreal objects and the marvelous are paths crossed in this adventure. In the third part Alice travels in the contemporary world where illustration gets more complex and challenging contours. Art and illustration are on the trail of the girl of many faces.

Abstract:
New communication technologies have immensely changed the world in which we live, as well as its culture. Within such context, much has been discussed about the future of literature and books. This study avoided speculating about the persistence of books as physical objects, and, rather, investigated the possibilities of literary creation in face of the new reading media, particularly the iPad. As the invention of the press forged the novel, and the popular spread of magazines and newspapers consolidated modern short stories in the past, we currently investigate how new technological tools may be used to create literary texts, called digital literature, that are different from the print-based text. For this comparison, we used two renowned novels by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and two versions of the Atomic Antelope, by Chris Stephens, for iPad: Alice for iPad and Alice in New York. This study also discussed the possible demise of books and literature by outlining the long history of reading that has set the context for books in the Digital Era; Therefore, it demonstrated that the possibilities of literary creation for digital platforms may go beyond what we understand to be books today, which is why the persistence of literature, regardless of what medium it uses, is ensured.

Abstract:
This thesis was to me, more than anything else, a pursuit of fascinations. I began with an obsession with stairs: exploring different types, the symbology associated with them, and why I was so adamant about making every fire stair beautiful. This led me to a program and a site - a theater on the corner of Swann St. and 14th St. in northwest Washington D.C.; a building necessitating stairs, in an area of the city that was full of artists and theaters, but which lacked a movie theater. I was compelled to design a magical building, a movie theater of building elements as characters. My professors urged me to choose an opening night movie as inspiration for the design; I was instantly enamored with the idea of designing around Alice and her Adventures in Wonderland. To me, the characters, puns, and riddles in the book were perfect to imagine as the columns, walls, and stairs of my building. This allusion eventually morphed the building into two theaters, an above ground movie theater and a below ground performance theater. As I worked, I had two very important (and related) revelations. First, that a theater is very similar, both in function and layout, to a church. The layout of the building, therefore, I designed like that of a church or a temple. I constantly explored opposing worlds; the above ground dreamworld vs. the below ground reality, the inner sacred world vs. the outer public realm. The essence (the spirit, or soul) of the building is Alice. Second, I feel the most spiritual when I am designing. I realized over time that it was equally important to me to learn how to make my drawings feel as it was to design the building itself. My thesis became art IS religion.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Dr. Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), the leading American figure in industrial medicine during the early to mid-1900s, left behind a body of rhetoric that is important in the history of American feminist discourse and American public address. Her discourse is the exemplary of feminist-pragmatist rhetoric, a genre of cross-gender communication developed by New Women associated with Hull House and the University of Chicago between 1892 and 1918. Hamilton’s rhetoric illuminates a key event in the history of the American rhetorical tradition—the emergence of the modern woman from her late-Victorian beginnings through her Progressive self-transformation. This study is approached as a rhetorical biography. It tracks Hamilton’s evolution from “reticent scientist” to outspoken feminist-pragmatist by examining family, educational, peer and social influences on her development; and through critical analysis of her speeches, technical writing, books, and popular and specialty magazine articles over a 36-year period, from 1907 to 1943.

Abstract:
Walker's latest three novels address in some way walker's notions of spirituality and her idea that many people suffer from a type of spiritual sickness which prevents them from realizing the fullest extent of their spirituality. The well as with themselves. Possessing the Secret of Joy doesnot discuss Walker's thoughts on spirituality as much as her earlier works. Instead, the book focuses on Tashi, the main character, who suffers a form of physical mutilation which leads to her spiritual suffering.By looking at Walker's novels and by reading other works, both fictional and nonfictional, including the influential work The Great Cosmic Mother by Monica Sjoo and Barbara Mor, I have developed a theory of Walker's spirituality. Using this idea about spirituality, I then examined Walker's novels for evidence of forms of spiritual sickness in her characters and studied the ways in which the characters overcame their respective spiritual difficulties.

Abstract:
A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) studies the strong interaction part (Quantum Chromo Dynamics) of the Standard Model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. ALICE has been designed as a general-purpose heavy-ion detector in order to explore phenomena of strong interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Results are presented here on the study of J/ψ production in pp collisions at ALICE. In particular, a measurement of J/ψ cross-section at √s = 7 TeV energy has been performed, together with a study of a possible algorithm to separate primary J/ψ from those coming from decays of B hadrons. The validity of this algorithm in ALICE has been demonstrated using Monte-Carlo samples. The J/ψ particles have been searched exclusively in the decay channel J/ψ → e⁺e⁻. The study focused on what would be achievable in a period of early running, with integrated luminosity of L=1.25 nb-1, at a proton-proton centre of mass collision energy of √s = 7 TeV.

Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found There , Lewis Carroll’s most famous books, have been widely intersemiotically translated throughout the last 150 years. A number of illustration, plays, ballets, songs, movies, TV shows and others was made by renowned and lesser known artists. There is not, however, a systematic approach of this phenomenon in a more strict field of analysis of intermediality and intersemiotic translations. Two notable examples will serve for analysis: a famous TV series by Jim Henson, The Muppet Show , aired from 1976 to 1981, featuring puppets and a human guest, in which an episode from the fifth season starred Brooke Shields playing Alice in 1980; and 1988 film with a blend of stop motion animation by multiple prize winner Czech director Jan Švankmajer, called Neco z Alenky . We intend to compare these translations of Alice’s novels, in which translators choose opposingly distinct characteristics of the books, but both of fundamental importance to the source.

This research aims to contribute to the studies of the history of contemporary art in Brazil, specifically in Pernambuco and Paraíba. It presents an analysis of the series "In the heart of all things or under the sign of the Dark", produced in the 1980s, authored by the artist Alice Vinagre. The study proposes to articulate the production of the artist to the historical context, trying to understand the series as the result of a continuous changing time. The series features help us to (re) think the practices shared by the so-called "80 generation" as the use of graphic resources of advertising, referentiality art history, the allusion to the popular culture etc. From this, we seek to reflect about the constitution of the plastic vocabulary of the artist in the process by which the painting lived (and still lives) in the national and international art scenario. Therefore, we use the studies the authors Francisco Morais (1992), Raul Córdula (2006), Madalena Zaccara (2009), Joana D’arc Lima (2014), Dyogenes Chaves (2004), among others. For the analysis of the series, we try to identify the autobiographical aspects. Thus, we explored the speech of the artist from the perspective of oral history explored in Lucila Delgado's research (2006) and social memory of Ecléa Bosi (2001), among others. Witness of a time living in the interval between the subjectivity of the artist Alice Vinagre and the collectivity of his time.

Abstract:
First read as a children's fiction, Alice’s adventures in wonderland, Through the looking-glass and what Alice found there raises a few fundamental questions about our role as speakers and our ability to express our deepest thoughts. Therefore was it of utmost importance that Alice’s dream, which not only means self-expression, but also a sharp sense for clear thinking, should question the underground and other more obvious connections between sense, good sense and common sense as opposed to nonsense. Indeed, a closer scrutiny of those three major concepts intimates a new facet of the speaker whose figures of speech reveal his being, fettered though he might be by linguistic conventions that prevent him from expressing who he really is. Lewis Carroll’s masterwork would then become the mirror-image of our own plight and enable us to realize how constraining language can be when complying with conformism. Alice's adventures might then be a new "paradise lost", informing the reader about his linguistic relation to the world
