Arnavas, Francesca. "Cognitive Alice : Lewis Carroll's Alice books in dialogue with narratology." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/22070/.

Abstract:
This dissertation’s main purpose is twofold, on the one hand it gives new insights into the construction and meaning of Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, on the other hand it makes a contribution to the field of cognitive narratology, furnishing a complete practical example of the application of cognitive narratology’s tools to a relevant literary work. I take the Alice books as a case study to illuminate the working of cognitive narratology as an interdisciplinary project, relying both on classical narrative studies and on methods taken from the cognitive field. This focus also serves a synthetic view of cognitive narratology itself, which is in its essence a combination of the revaluation of classic narrative concepts and the introduction of new ones. A useful theoretical concept to give a general understanding of my methodology as the tying together of different overlapping approaches, is the idea of the Alice books as a cognitive playground, a huge mental landscape where different intellectual suggestions and speculations coexist with experientiality and affections. Wonderland and the Looking-Glass land are thus presented as fantastical cognitive playgrounds where different minds interact with each other creating the big and complex aesthetic space of the literary text. Each of my chapters examines a specific topic in relation to the minds of the author, the readers and the characters. After a preface and a first chapter outlining the main theoretical currents of cognitive narratology and pointing out the special fit of the Alice books for this kind of analysis, the subsequent chapters are: “Virtual Alice”, “Mirrored Alice”, “Emotional Alice”, and “Unnatural Alice”, each of them offering different, although interconnected, insights into the peculiar dialogue which can be established between the Alices and the cognitive narratological approach.

Abstract:
Electromagnetic Linear Induction Pumps (EMPs) are an important research subject in the development of Gen IV sodium-cooled fast reactors. Especially, in the framework of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission’s (CEA) R&D numerical simulation program, the prediction of the behavior of Annular Linear Induction Pumps (ALIPs) is been evaluated because of its safety advantages compared to mechanical pumps. For nuclear safety reasons, it is needed to know the behavior of an ALIP at off-design conditions. Consequently, the present work is focused on the study of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomenology and instabilities, these last occurring at the transition from linear to non-linear branch of the performance curve at the maximum of pressure. This phenomenon is associated to a consequent decrease of the pump developed pressure and efficiency and takes place at large magnetic Reynolds number (RmB), which quantifies the relation convection to diffusion of the magnetic field. This research aims to develop different tools permitting to describe phenomena and predict behavior for different performance regimes. This reasoning has been constructed following three main axes based on bibliographic researches on the subject. They consist of i) the characterization of main effects triggered during the performance of ALIPs using theoretical approaches and obtaining of stability thresholds from which the MHD flow might become unstable, ii) the development of accurate numerical models able to reproduce physical behavior close to real facilities and iii) the observation and analysis of phenomena using different methods for the post-treatment of big data acquired through the exploitation of the experimental facility PEMDyn, located in CEA Cadarache, France. In this work, the comparison of obtained results through these three different approaches has permitted to describe the MHD instabilities expected at operations with high values of slip magnetic Reynolds number (Rms). They are characterized by low frequency (LF) pulsations, velocity and magnetic field inhomogeneities, vibrations, etc. Here it has been obtained that these phenomena might be due to an amplification of inlet perturbations, triggered by the value of the slip velocity. Such amplification may be quantified with theoretical or numerical models, and has been observed on experiments.Furthermore, the current study puts the accent on the required level of detail in analytical and numerical models depending on their scope, and thus, an important number of models with different accuracies and assumptions has been developed. One of main conclusions extracted shows the importance of end effects due to the finite length of the inductor on the performance and stability of ALIPs

Abstract:
Nowadays, many parametric systems support history-based , constraint-based and feature-based modelling. Unfortunately, most systems fail during the reevaluation phase when various kind of topological changes occur. This issue is known as “persistent naming”. It refers to the problem of identifying entities in an initial parametric model and matching them in the reevaluated model. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, but they remain insufficient. In this thesis, we focus on the persistent and homogeneous naming of entities in any dimension (vertices, edges, aggregates of edges, faces; aggregates of faces (“shells”), volumes, aggregates of volumes, etc) and entities resulting from the intersection of non-planar objects. To do that, we propose a hierarchical platform which gathers, by relations of aggregations, entities of any dimension. Our idea is then, to begin by naming (i. E. ) to characterize and to map) the smaller usable entities: the edges. The management of names of the edges is mainly carried out by a graph tracing the evolution of these entities during the process of parametric modelling. Then, we used the computed matching between these edges by exploiting the hierarchical and aggregative structure of the topological model, in order to deduce the matching between the entities of higher dimension. Our solution is implemented on a geometric kerned based on the generalized maps model

Abstract:
This work presents the measurement of the J/ production with pT > 5 GeV/c at midrapidity (|y| < 0.7) with the ALICE experiment in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions, using the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) triggered events. This measurement is very important due to the possibility of studying models that predict the heavy quarkonium production, and it also provides baseline results to be compared with the J/ production in PbPb, where the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is formed. This measurement was separated into 4 pT bins in order to reproduce a J/ pT spectrum. The differential cross section (d2/dpT dy) results achieved were: 0.42 ± 0.11(est.) ± 0.13(sys.) b GeV/c for pT between 5 and 7 GeV/c, 0.18 ± 0.03(est.) ± 0.04(sys.) b GeV/c for pT between 7 and 9 GeV/c, 0.041 ± 0.008(est.) ± 0.008(sys.) b GeV/c for pT 9 and 11 GeV/c and 0,014 ± 0,003(est.) ± 0,005(sis.) b GeV/c for pT between 11 and 14 GeV/c. These values are compatible with Non-Relativistic (NRQCD) and Color Evaporation model (CEM) predictions. Besides, they are also compatible with results from ALICE (low pT ) and with ATLAS results (for pT > 6 GeV/c). This work also shows the measurement of the fraction of non-prompt J/ (fB). The results were: fB = 0,267 ± 0,114 (hpT i = 7,15 GeV/c), fB = 0,338 ± 0,116 (hpT i = 10,7 GeV/c), fB = 0,271 ± 0,087 (hpT i = 8,5 GeV/c), which are compatible with ATLAS results. The last study made in this work was the feasility of the measurement of J/ in Pb-Pb collisions for pT > 6 GeV/c, using the EMCal L1 Gamma trigger. Considering events from the centrality region 20-60%, 93 ± 16 J/s were reconstructed.

Abstract:
ALICE is built to measure the properties of strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, taking advantage of the low pT acceptance in the central barrel, ALICE is playing an important role in understanding pp collisions with minimum bias triggers at LHC energies. The work presented in this thesis is based on pp data simulated by the ALICE collaboration and early data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A procedure to calculate trigger efficiencies and an estimate of the systematic uncertainty due to the limited acceptance of the detector are shown. A kinematic comparison between Monte Carlo event generators, PYTHIA 6, PYTHIA 8 and PHOJET is also presented. To improve the description of diffraction in PYTHIA, a hard diffractive component was added to PYTHIA 8 in 2009, which is described. Finally a trigger with a high efficiency for picking diffractive events is used to select a sample with an enhanced diffractive component from pp data. These data are compared to Monte Carlo models, and the results are summarized with an estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Tabalaza, Nomthetho. "The impact climate change on rural households in Binfield village." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/20626.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate change poses a major environmental challenge, due to its adverse effects on human settlement patterns and food security. The global phenomenon upsets seasonal shifts, leading to changes in planting dates and weather patterns. This unpredictability has severe and adverse effects on farmers and rural communities, as variable environmental factors govern activities related to daily sustenance and food availability. The kind of rapid and intense climate change that South African rural spaces are experiencing now, increase the likelihood of extreme weather events such as droughts, heat waves and floods. There are growing concerns that the rural poor will be unable to adapt. Rural livelihoods are therefore facing overwhelming and extensive environmental threats, while rural dwellers are finding it difficult to adapt and cope. As a result, climate change can thus be described as one of the most complex and dangerous environmental problems challenging rural livelihoods today. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of climate change on rural poverty at Binfield village in the Eastern Cape and to identify the livelihood activities practiced. Furthermore, the research was conducted to ascertain how rural livelihood activities are affected by climate change and identify and assess the effectiveness of adaption strategies employed by the households. The research also aimed to explore and establish further adaptation strategies. This study made use of a qualitative research method. Babooa (2008) argues that qualitative research is concerned with stories and accounts including subjective understandings, feelings, opinions and beliefs. The study used both primary and secondary data for data. The researcher adopted interviews and field observation for primary data whilst secondary data was sourced from journals, articles and internet sources. O‘ Leary (2004) describes the interview as a method of collecting data where the interviewer asks the Interviewee open-ended questions. The questions were based on the key areas of interest. Qualitative research methods are aimed at understanding the rich, complex characteristic nature of human phenomena. Qualitative methods are concerned with understanding human behaviour from the participant‘s own frame of reference.

The purpose of this dissertation is to present Alice Brill s photographs as well as their relationship with her personal life. The meeting point between her photographs and personal life is exile, which changes her understanding of the world. Alice Brill was born in Germany in 1920 and she has lived in Hamburg until 1934, when she was forced to leave her country due to her Jewish background. While in exile, she has traveled a long journey until her final destination, Brazil. These life experiences transformed Brill s gaze and her settlement in the city of São Paulo was facilitated by her art. In this way the artist expressed the dissonances she was experiencing. Among her vast work is photography, which she has built throughout the 1950s, presenting a distinct look to the subjects of her photography. Among the sets that Brill built, the photographs of the Juquery Hospital made in 1950 are important for several aspects, especially for their documentary and artistic value.

This thesis develops a reflection about the indians audiovisual communication project Video in the Villages, from the perspective of one of his successful experiences which resulted in the professional education of the documentarist Divino Tserewahu, belonging to the Xavante community of Sangradouro, state of Mato Grosso (MT). The work presents an ethnography of the meetings promoted by the project, between indians and non--#]indians including the meeting between the researcher and her interlocutors; questions the theme of the image production of the group and the relationships between the anthropologist and her interlocutors for carrying out her field research. The research happened in a critical moment of that community, with actions implementing a agreement that put an end to a conflict of serious proportions involving the son of the owner of a property boundaries with the Indigenous Land of Sangradouro/Volta Grande, tha talso involved the farmers of Primavera do Leste and local politicians, the state government, the Human Rights Commission of the House of Representatives, the Federal Prosecution Attorneys and the Funai (National Indians Foundation). The fieldwork was made in the years 2003 and 2004 in olinda, state of Pernambuco (PE); Sangradouro, state of Mato Grosso (MT); Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS); Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro (RJ); and Primavera do Leste, (MT). Abstract:
The intention of this thesis is to provide an alternative counter-narrative to the mainstream histories of punk that center white men. By focusing on the contributions of fem queer and POC punks, I aim to legitimize punk music as a form of resistance against systems of oppression that are oppositional to the commodified forms of mainstream punk. Using Alice Bag, as my central case study as a fem queer punk that is often left out of punk historical narratives, I contextualize her work through feminist, queer, and media studies lenses to bridge the gap between academia and forgotten personal experience.

Senosi, Kgotlaesele Johnson. "Vector boson production with the ALICE detector." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27310.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to study and investigate the production of massive vector bosons (W+ and W−). This a priori mentioned production is not sensitive to hot nuclear matter effects because of the weak coupling nature of these vector bosons. Thus, in heavy ion collisions they provide a good reference for the medium-induced effects on other probes. The production mechanism of these vector bosons is highly isospin dependent and thus they are affected by the initial state effects. Initial state effects include isospin, Fermi motion, EMC effect, shadowing and nuclear absorption. Hence their production in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions can be used to test some of these initial state effects. In this thesis only two of these initial state effects will be considered namely, isospin and shadowing (referring to shadowing and anti-shadowing). Eke, these vector bosons can be used to provide a non-arbitrary reference to the probes affected by the medium. Traditionally, in heavy ion collisions, hard processes are expected to scale with the number of binary collision thus a precise study of these vector bosons can be used to test the factorisation assumed in models used to determine centrality. This unique property of electroweak (W) bosons makes them essential probes to study the possible inherent bias in centrality determination. In proton-proton (pp) collisions, their production can be used to obtain information on quark parton distribution functions (PDF). The data used in the analysis was collected by A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ALICE detector is designed to study ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which a hot and dense, strongly-interacting medium is created. The production of W bosons is studied in p-Pb, p-p and Pb-Pb collisions at 5.023, 8 and 5.023 TeV centre-of-mass energies, respectively. The forward muon spectrometer with the pseudorapidity acceptance −4.0 < ŋ < −2.5 is used. W bosons are studied via the inclusive single muon differential pT spectrum.

Hami, Iman. "Alice Walker's womanist fiction : tensions and reconciliations." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/16683/.

Full text
Abstract:
A theory formulated by Alice Walker, womanism focuses on the unification of men and women with Nature and Earth. This thesis explores womanism with regards to its specific concerns with African American women’s rights, identities, and self-actualisation, and points towards its more overarching concerns with human relations and sexual freedom, as expressed in each of Walker’s seven novels. The seven novels discussed in the thesis are The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), Meridian (1976), The Color Purple (1982), The Temple of My Familiar (1989), Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992), By the Light of My Father’s Smile (1998), and Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2004). Although Walker introduces the term “womanism” in 1983, this thesis traces the development of the concept across her canon of fictional works. By analysing the novels written in the 1970s, I establish how the term came to be coined, and, by seeing through themes and issues addressed early on and how they can be mapped through analysis of her later works, I demonstrate how womanism went on to be further developed and complexly wrought. This thesis thus examines how Alice Walker’s own theory of womanism is reflected through the oeuvre of her fictional works, and considers where tensions arise in her application of what is intended to be a universalist, humanist, project. For, in many of her novels, it is women’s sexuality and sexual power that are the focus, often at the cost of developing the potential of male characters’ equivalent attributes. However, as will be argued, it is in Walker’s later, less appreciated, works that womanism is more fully developed in its universal claims. The integration of spiritual themes and concepts into her narratives reduce or remove the tensions that arise in the reconciliation between woman and man, as well as between humanity and nature.

Somerville, J. Christine. "Stories and storytelling in Alice Munro’s fiction." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25523.

Full text
Abstract:
References to stories and storytelling appear throughout Alice Munro's five short story cycles: DANCE OF THE HAPPY SHADES, LIVES OF GIRLS AND WOMEN, SOMETHING I'VE BEEN MEANING TO TELL YOU, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? and THE. MOONS OF JUPITER. This thesis contends that stories--mentioned briefly or recounted at length--provide counterpoint to experience for Munro's characters. Oral and written stories influence them throughout life, but especially in youth, when they eagerly identify with, and imitate, fictional figures. In LIVES and WHO, storytelling becomes central because their protagonists are a writer and an actress. Occasionally, the narrators in all five works reflect on the difficulty of expressing truth in fiction, but SOMETHING raises this issue repeatedly. By embedding stories within her narratives, Munro imitates the workings of memory; moreover, she draws attention to her narratives as texts rather than glimpses of reality. A feminine perspective on narrative gradually emerges, in which the woman narrator sees her task not as imposing order, but as discovering order that already exists.

Abstract:
The present paper aims at the analysis of the politeness and attenuation elements in both the Portuguese spoken in São José do Rio Preto region and in the Spanish spoken in Malaga region. The studied corpora were obtained by means of partially guided interviews and are part of the ALIP Project (São Paulo\'s Countryside Linguistic Sampling), the Brazilian one, and the PRESEEA ( Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of the Spanish Spoken in Spain and America), the Spanish one. A total of 24 interviews were analysed, being 12 of those on an average level and the other 12 on a superior one, six in each language, equally divided into male and female speakers. The average level speakers range aged from 25 to 45 whereas the superior level ranged from 50 to 70. Considering the pragmatic theory of Speech Acts and other more recent studies on politeness and attenuation by theorists such as Leech (2007), Bravo (2001, 2004, 2005), Kerbrat-Orecchioni (2004, 2005, 2006), among others, both interviewers\' and interviewees\' speeches were analysed. From the interviewers\' speeches it was possible to observe how the questions, the information required, were built up in both languages. Such an analysis made possible verifying how the interviewer was positioned as well as which strategies were used: verbs in imperative, direct enunciations, preparation acts usage or verbs aiming at protecting the informer\'s face. Yet the informers\' speech analysis aimed at the inquiry of other strategies usage being the intention of such the personal or third parties\' defense, proctecting oneself\'s face or the interviewer\'s one. Among these strategies we mention defocusing the self, protecting oneself\'s own face or the other\'s one, attenuating elements usage when expressing opinions, among others. Throughout our analysis we investigated also the positioning of each interview coming to the axis solidarity or power according to Brown and Gilman\'s theory (1960). For such, it was made necessary the study of the treatment forms applied as well as the use or not of noun forms. The achieved results in the studied corpora showed that the Spanish language proves to be a language of more approximation coming to the interlocutor whereas the Portuguese language denotes more distance. It could also be noticed that certain elements such as the use of a more formal treatment coming to the Portuguese language are characterized more as a conversational strategy than as a social distance element.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents another adventure of Alice through more than a century of pictures and conversations (and what is the use of a book without pictures and conversations?, thought Alice to herself). The travel departs from the boat trip where the story of Alice was first told, arriving to the adventures of the girl in the web-land in contemporary world. The illustrations by John Tenniel and Lewis Carroll present the Victorian Alice, contrasting Carroll\'s influences of romanticism and pre-Raphaelism with the caricatures and intertextual procedures of John Tenniel\' illustrations. In a second moment the girl jumps from the book of children\'s stories to the book of poetic images, traveling through a maze where she will find several surreal Alices. Femme enfants, collages, poetic images, metamorphosis, surreal objects and the marvelous are paths crossed in this adventure. In the third part Alice travels in the contemporary world where illustration gets more complex and challenging contours. Art and illustration are on the trail of the girl of many faces.

This thesis was to me, more than anything else, a pursuit of fascinations. I began with an obsession with stairs: exploring different types, the symbology associated with them, and why I was so adamant about making every fire stair beautiful. This led me to a program and a site - a theater on the corner of Swann St. and 14th St. in northwest Washington D.C.; a building necessitating stairs, in an area of the city that was full of artists and theaters, but which lacked a movie theater. I was compelled to design a magical building, a movie theater of building elements as characters. My professors urged me to choose an opening night movie as inspiration for the design; I was instantly enamored with the idea of designing around Alice and her Adventures in Wonderland. To me, the characters, puns, and riddles in the book were perfect to imagine as the columns, walls, and stairs of my building. This allusion eventually morphed the building into two theaters, an above ground movie theater and a below ground performance theater. As I worked, I had two very important (and related) revelations. First, that a theater is very similar, both in function and layout, to a church. The layout of the building, therefore, I designed like that of a church or a temple. I constantly explored opposing worlds; the above ground dreamworld vs. the below ground reality, the inner sacred world vs. the outer public realm. The essence (the spirit, or soul) of the building is Alice. Second, I feel the most spiritual when I am designing. I realized over time that it was equally important to me to learn how to make my drawings feel as it was to design the building itself. My thesis became art IS religion.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the relationship between the representation of bodies in Alice Munro’s work and the imprint process as characterized by Georges Didi-Huberman. The description of the characters’ bodies gives evidence of the same dialectical essence as imprints: it attempts to fix the body matter while making movement visible, it is the product of a contact but becomes apparent only from a distance and its unicity foreshadows its multiplicity. The body and its link to the world around also displays a relationship of resemblance and contact based on reciprocity. It is conveyed through words and an expression that tends to lyricism. Finally, bodies represented in Munro’s fiction are not mere copies of the real but are creative and interpersonal as they become the very material of artistic creation. This study of the representation of bodies in Alice Munro’s work attempts to show what being attentive to bodies entails, in particular in the context of care studies, and how this attention to bodies influences fictional writing

Mercier, Vincent.

Abstract:
Endocytosis is the process permitting entry to the cell of portions of membrane as well as ofextracellular milieu and the substances it contains. In recent years, several endocytic mechanismshave been identified but clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is the best characterised so far. Inthe present work, we have been interested in Alix, an adaptator protein which associates withnumerous partners involved in the endolysosomal pathway, although its exact role in endocytosisremains poorly understood. The goal of this research was to better understand Alix role inendocytosis using Alix ko Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts (MEFs). Using this model, we showthat Clathrin Independent Endocytosis (CIE) is impaired in these cells while Clathrin MediatedEndocytosis (CME) is unaffected. Indeed, CIE cargo internalization is disrupted by Alixdepletion while CME cargoes are endocytosed normally in Alix ko cells. CIE in Alix ko MEFscan be restored by wild-type Alix expression but not by an Alix mutant deleted of its interactionsite with endophilin A, proteins recently identified as involved in the control of a CIE. Moreover, endophilin A2 depletion has no effect in Alix ko MEFs. Our results thus indicate that Alix andendophilin A2 act together in the control of CIE. Finally, in agreement with a role of Alix in CIEinhibition, we show that Alix ko MEF migration (depending on CIE of ß-integrin) is slower andthat IL2R- (a CIE cargo) induced signalling is impaired in the absence of Alix. Our resultsdemonstrate, for the first time, that Alix, together with endophilins, specifically controls CIE andthat inhibition of this function of Alix affects cell physiology
