Abstract:
The importance of biopsychosocial factors in the genesis and maintenance of disease is increasingly being recognized. Most illnesses should be studied from a multifactorial perspective to facilitate understanding and treating them. Many psychopathological processes involve factors such as loneliness, hopelessness, and lack of social cohesion. As early as the nineteenth century, J.M. Charcot defined those illnesses in which no organic lesion was visible as functional disorders. Today, the anthropological view of illness known as the Heidelberg School provides us with a more global and comprehensible assessment of illness. The anthropological approach is complemented by a bioethical one, a bioethics of daily life which, as a practical science, studies and evaluates the living conditions of individuals, seeking practical solutions and contributing its reflections with deliberation and care. In this paper, we aim to highlight the most important factors that have an impact on illness by providing an anthropological view of illness and bringing bioethics closer to everyday life.

Kregting, Louise Theodora, and n/a. "The relative importance of mainstream water velocity and physiology (nutrient demand) on the growth rate of Adamsiella chauvinii." University of Otago. Department of Botany, 2007. http://adt.otago.ac.nz./public/adt-NZDU20070806.121216.

Full text
Abstract:
A prevailing view exists in the literature which suggests that macroalgae growing in slow-flow environments (<4 cm s⁻) are less productive because of "mass-transfer" limitation compared to fast-flow environments. Macroalgae in slow-flow environments are thought to have thicker diffusion boundary-layers which limit the flux of essential molecules to and from the algal thallus. However nutrient demand of a macroalga can also influence nutrient flux. The main objective of this research was to determine the relative importance of physical (mainstream velocity) and physiological (nutrient demand) factors influencing the growth rate of Adamsiella chauvinii, a small (<20 cm) red algal species, that grows within the benthic boundary-layer in a soft sediment habitat. To establish the influence of water velocity, the growth rate of A. chauvinii was measured in situ each month (March 2003 to March 2004) at three sites with varying degrees of water velocity (slow, intermediate and fast) at which all other environmental parameters (photon flux density, seawater temperature and nutrients) were similar. To determine the metabolic demand and nutrient uptake rate of A. chauvinii, the internal nutrient status (C:N, soluble tissue nitrate, ammonium and phosphate), uptake kinetics (V[max] and K[s]) and nutrient uptake rate at a range of mainstream velocities were also determined on a seasonal basis. The hydrodynamic environment around A. chauvinii canopies was characterised in situ and compared with controlled laboratory experiments. Growth rates of Adamsiella chauvinii thalli at the slow-flow site were significantly lower in winter (June) to summer (February) than the intermediate- and fast-flow sites, while in autumn growth rates were similar between sites. However, A. chauvinii at the slow-flow site had similar or higher tissue N content compared to thalli at the other two sites during winter, spring and summer suggesting that growth rates of A. chauvinii were not mass-transfer limited. Nitrogen uptake rates of A. chauvinii were similar between sites in summer and winter, however uptake rates were lower in summer compared to winter even though thalli were nitrogen limited in summer. Water velocity had no effect on nitrate uptake in either summer or winter and uptake of ammonium increased with increasing water velocity during summer only. Two hydrodynamically different environments were distinguished over a canopy of A. chauvinii, with both the laboratory and field velocity profiles in good agreement with each other. In the top half of the canopy, the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) and Reynolds stresses were greatest while in the bottom half of the canopy flow rates were less than 90 % of mainstream velocity (< 1 cm s⁻). When considered together, the influence of water velocity on the growth rates of A. chauvinii was not completely clear. Results suggest that mainstream velocity had little influence on nutrient availability to A. chauvinii because of the unique hydrodynamic environment created by the canopy. Nutrients, especially ammonium and phosphate, derived from the sediment and invertebrates, may provide enough nitrogen and phosphate to saturate the metabolic demand of Adamsiella chauvinii, consequently, A. chauvinii is well adapted to this soft-sediment environment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the prescription of painkillers by general practitioners. It is grounded in the study of the “trajectory” of two iconic drugs. The first ones are dextropropoxyphene-containing painkillers whose brandname was Di-Antalvic (among others) and the seconds are tramadol-containing drugs. This research adopts a twofold perspective. On the one hand, the prescription of painkillers is considered as the result of a process, in this case the choice of a molecule available on a market, and it then analyzes how this market emerged and how it has functioned throughout the 20th century. This perspective aims at uncovering the very macro-sociological determinants which play a role in prescribing practices, such as the pharmaceutical industry of course, but also the (national or European) health authorities. All these stakeholders have a decisive influence on the different ways in which these analgesics circulate on the market - as they are manufactured, promoted, reimbursed, but also evaluated, re-evaluated and sometimes withdrawn from the market. On the other hand, this research analyzes the prescription of painkillers as work carried out during the consultation. It shows how general practitioners sort out different types of pain, handle hybrid cases – which often correspond to "complex patients" or "problem patients" – and therefore prescribe with the view to calm pain, whatever its origin. As a result, to prescribe, physicians rely on resources and knowledge from their training, past experiences with drugs, etc., as such work requires very specific skills in the management of side effects, for example. This research intends to analyze the ways in which these different types of knowledge are mobilized during the prescribing work

Abstract:
The ability to feel pain is crucial for life, since it serves as an early warning system forpotential harm to the body. The majority of pain evaluations rely on patient reports. Patients who are unable to express their own pain must instead rely on third-party reportsof their suffering. Due to potential observer bias, pain reports may contain inaccuracies. In addition, it would be impossible for people to keep watch around the clock. Inorder to better manage pain, especially in noncommunicative patients, automatic paindetection technologies might be implemented to aid human caregivers and complementtheir service. Facial expressions are used by all observer-based pain assessment systemsbecause they are a reliable indicator of pain and can be interpreted from a distance.Taking into consideration that pain generally generates spontaneous facial behavior, these facial expressions could be used to detect the presence of pain. In this thesis, weanalyze facial expressions of pain in order to address pain estimation. First, we presenta thorough analysis of the problem by comparing numerous common CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) architectures, such as MobileNet, GoogleNet, ResNeXt-50, ResNet18, and DenseNet-161. We employ these networks in two unique modes: standalone and feature extraction. In standalone mode, models (i.e., networks) are utilized to directly estimate pain. In feature extractor mode, "values" from the middle layer are extracted and fed into classifiers like Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Random Forest Regression (RFR).CNNs have achieved significant results in image classification and have achievedgreat success. The effectiveness of Transformers in computer vision has been demonstrated through recent studies. Transformer-based architectures were proposed in the second section of this thesis. Two distinct Transformer-based frameworks were presented to address two distinct pain issues: pain detection (pain vs no pain) and thedistinction between genuine and posed pain. The innovative architecture for binaryidentification of facial pain is based on data-efficient image transformers (Deit). Twodatasets, UNBC-McMaster shoulder pain and BioVid heat pain, were used to fine-tuneand assess the trained model. The suggested architecture is built on Vision Transformers for the detection of genuine and simulated pain from facial expressions (ViT). Todistinguish between Genuine and Posed Pain, the model must pay particular attentionto the subtle changes in facial expressions over time. The employed approach takes intoaccount the sequential aspect and captures the variations in facial expressions. Experiments on the publicly accessible BioVid Heat Pain Database demonstrate the efficacy of our strategy

Grove, Francois Michael. "The beneficiation of carbonate rich coal seam water through the cultivation of Arthrospira Maxima (Spirulina)." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/14665.

Full text
Abstract:
Coal seams are commonly associated with poor quality water that requires treatment. Water treatment can be very expensive and can severely affect the profitability of mining projects. This study investigated the potential cultivation of Arthrospira maxima (Spirulina) in coal seam water to beneficiate coal seam water in order to effectively offset the water treatment cost. The study was conducted in Northern South Africa and formed part of a larger Coal Seam Water Beneficiation Project (CSWBP). The study consisted of laboratory based Flask Studies and outdoor High Rate Algal Pond Studies. The Flask Studies that were carried out in the on-site field laboratory, found that the coal seam water could provide a suitable medium for Spirulina cultivation. In addition, it was found that the optimal pH for the selected strain ranged between 9 - 10.5 and that the addition of excess iron, up to 100 times the concentration found in defined growth media such as Schlösser’s, to the culture media could enhance productivity. The High Rate Algal Pond Studies (HRAP) were carried out over a period of 18 months. The studies showed that the coal seam water at the CSWBP is a valuable resource that can reduce media costs by 50% without affecting productivity. In a study encompassing 334 days it was shown that heating the culture through plate heat exchangers would result in a significant increase in productivity and a heated productivity of 19.86 g/m2/day was recorded. An unheated productivity of 14.11 g/m2/day was recorded. Therefore, it was found that it would be economically feasible to beneficiate coal seam water found at the CSWBP through the cultivation of Arthrospira maxima (Spirulina).

Abstract:
This study examines the growth, allelopathy and toxicity of laboratory cultures of the cyanobacterium Limnothrix (strain AC0243). Key findings of the research show evidence that this strain demonstrates ecological plasticity and should be considered as a potentially dangerous invasive species. General observations of the strain under normal (non-experimental) conditions showed extensive plasticity in terms of colony morphology. These forms included floating and non-floating ‘ball’ colonies, well structured colonies attached to the tissue culture flasks, sheets of intertwined trichomes loosely attached to the flasks or planktonic masses. No specific trigger could be attributed to the changes in morphology. Trials were performed to determine if allelopathy occurred between some species of microfungi and Limnothrix (strain AC0243), both of which are commonly recovered from the same niche. The results of these experiments suggested symbiotic or commensual relationships with Fusarium species and Acremonium species but not Cladosporium sphaerospermum. Cladosporium sphaerospermum inhibited growth of the cyanobacterium, although no allelopathy occurred, as determined by the lack of inhibition zones surrounding the colony. Allelopathy occurred when Limnothrix (strain AC0243) was grown Page 5 of 312 with ‘self’ inoculum, suggesting a quorum sensing mediated recognition of antagonism.

Department of Hydrology and Water Resources
In South Africa, inland aquaculture is on the increase, especially among the rural communities. Thus aquaculture is able to provide a source of employment and improve rural incomes. This study assessed algae species and their cyanotoxins in small holder production in Vhembe district, Limpopo, South Africa. Thirteen study sites were selected to assess the algae species and their cyanotoxins. The water samples were collected in four quarters and analysed for water temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, Electrical conductivity, phosphates, nitrates, chlorophyll, cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins, metal species and quality of the water in the fish ponds. In the 1st quarter of the year there was variation in Water Temperature (23.7oC-31.4oC), pH (5.5-9.6), EC (3.82-46.8μS/cm), TDS (2.4-45 mg/L), Phosphate (0.0-1.09mgL-1), Nitrates (0.0-1.00mgL-1), Chlorophyll-a (5.8-11.5mg/m-3). In the 2nd quarter there was variation inwater temperature (22.4-25.0oC), pH (6.6-8.8.9), EC (19.23-21.47μS/cm), TDS (12.5-17.9 mg/L), Phosphate (1.64-1.84mgL-1), Nitrates (1.02-1.88mgL-1), Chlorophyll-a (4.6-15.6mg/m-3). In the 3rd quarter there was variation for water temperature (22.9-25.0oC), pH (7.5-9.1), EC (7.91-293.3μS/cm), TDS (11.7-180.9 mg/L), Phosphate (1.10-1.80mgL-1), Nitrates (1.28-1.84mgL-1),Chlorophyll-a (6.8-15.6mg/m-3). In the 4th quarter there was variation forwater temperature (23.5-30.3), pH (7.1-9.3), EC (18.24-623μS/cm), TDS (23.7-136.4 mg/L), Phosphate (1.45-1.99mgL-1), Nitrates (1.43-1.68mgL-1), Chlorophyll-a (6.6-25.9mg/m-3). The metal content of the fish pond water was variable throughout the year but with moderate levels of Al, Cd, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ba were found. The metal Fe, exceeded the DWAF guideline values during this first quarter. The presence of Cd in the fish pond water could be attributed to rainfall eroding the earthen embankments of the fish pond. The results of physico-chemical parameters promotes the growth of cyanobacteria in the fish ponds. Flow cam and SEM were used to identify the cyanobacteria species and most cyanobacteria identified are hazard to human health, fish and other aquatic organisms. Molecular technologies were used to identify cyanotoxins and there was no cyanotoxins detected which was concluded that during collection of water samples no cyanobacteria produced toxins.

Abstract:
Algologs Heinrihs Skuja (1892–1972) kopš 1924. gada ļoti aktīvi iesaistījās Latvijas aļģu pētīšanā un pēc 1944. gada turpināja aļģu pētījumus Upsālā, Zviedrijā. Viņa pētījumu rezultātā Latvijā aļģu sugu skaits no 200 zināmām palielinājās līdz 2300 sugām.
