Abstract:
AbstractOn the basis of existing data on the dimensions, shape, surficial geology, and glaciological structure of ice island ARLIS-II, used in combination with aerial photographs of northernmost Ellesmere Island taken in 1950 and 1959, the source of the ice island is positively identified as the Alfred Ernest Ice Shelf. The duration of the recent drift of ‘Hobson's Choice’ ice island from the vicinity of the Alfred Ernest Ice Shelf to northern Ellef Ringnes Island, used as a model for the duration of the drift of ARLIS-II between the same points, suggests ARLIS-II broke off the ice shelf in approximately 1955.

Abstract:
This account concerns Alfred Ernest Maylard, 1855 — 1947, a surgeon of exceptional ability and a man with extraordinary energy and drive. He was appointed to the Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow, when it opened in 1890 and made an outstanding clinical and academic contribution, particularly in abdominal surgery. His organisational talents were remarkable and manifest in his influence not just upon the hospital's developments but also upon Glasgow's medical life in general. In his spare time he was a keen mountaineer and was the driving force behind the formation of the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1889 and its first secretary and later president. He was a prolific writer in all these fields, his eminence as scientific surgeon being recognised by election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and his contribution to mountaineering by the vice-presidency of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

Abstract:
Pharmacy activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina was regulated in 1879 by an Order of the Provincial Government, at the beginning of the Austro-Hungarian occupation. The pharmacy owner had to have a doctorate in chemistry or a master's degree in pharmacy obtained at an Austro-Hungarian faculty. The Law on Pharmacies was adopted in 1907. The first modern pharmacy in Banja Luka was opened by Moritz Brammer in 1879. The pharmacy was inherited by his son Robert, who had sons, Ernest, Hans and Alfred, pharmacists. Ernest inherited father's pharmacy, where he worked as of 1921. Hans, also a writer and a publicist, worked in this pharmacy (1921-1930). He emigrated to Israel in 1949. Before World War II, Alfred owned a pharmacy and a drugstore in Zagreb. The Brammer family, a well-known one in Banja Luka, contributed greatly to the cultural and social development of the city in the time in which they lived.

Tannhäuser rehabilitated (V) – « La quatrième »’s image in the parisian press –Ernst Van Dyck and the others The fifth part of the cycle is devoted to the presentation of the main Parisian musical critics’ opinions on the Tannhäuser’s performance at Palais Garnier on May 13th, 1895, conducted by Paul Taffanel and directed by Alexander Lapissida. If these journalists – such as Jacques Weber of Le Temps, Catulle Mendès of La Revue de Paris, Hippolyte Fierens-Gevaert of Journal des débats, Paul Dukas of La Revue hebdomadaire, Ferdinand Le Borne of Le Monde artiste, Henry Gauthier-Villars of L’Écho de Paris, Alfred Bruneau of Gil Blas, and some others that are recalled in the article, were not unanimous on various aspects of this production, all of them considered Ernest Van Dyck, interpreting the title role, as the principle triumphator of the evening.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to answer the question: how should one write about masters? It is a question about the narrative strategies of authors writing about masters. The presented analysis is based on five examples: (1) John A. Hall’s Ernest Gellner: An Intellectual Biography, (2) Anita Burdman Feferman and Solomon Feferman’s Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, (3) Edmund Leach’s Lévi-Strauss, (4) Andrzej Walicki’s Idee i ludzie. Próba autobiografii [Ideas and People. An Attempt at an Autobiography], and (5) Dialogues by Roman Jakobson and Krystyna Pomorska. Each text presents different rhetorical devices, authorial relations to the master, and academic aims. The paper concludes with a critical comparison of the five examples (with the addition of some other minor cases also discussed in the paper).

Dawson, Sian. "A lost legacy : a critical assessment and catalogue of the illustrated work of Ernest Aris : Alfred Ernest Walter George Aris (22 April, 1882-1963) children's author, illustrator and commercial artist." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/19515/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ernest Alfred Walter George Aris FZS, SGA, (1882-1963) was born in Islington and moved to Bradford where he spent his formative years and attained a diploma at the Bradford Technical College of Fine Art in 1900. Aris was a professionally trained commercial artist, author, and prolific illustrator of 170 children’s and natural history books. He also illustrated over 250 books for other authors, including Enid Blyton, Beatrix Potter, and May Byron, as well as contributing to a number of leading periodicals, magazines and newspapers. Aris was not a member of any of the active artists’ clubs or societies and was possibly shunned by his contemporaries and peers, who considered him unoriginal and an unscrupulous opportunist. Volume I of this thesis seeks to examine these suggestions and assesses why Aris’s name, despite his significant output, has remained relatively anonymous and why much of his legacy appears to have been unidentified, overlooked or forgotten. Chapter 1 discusses the historical influences of anthropomorphism on Aris’s style and those of his immediate predecessors. I have categorised Aris’s books into three periods for this appraisal and examined his technical attributes and qualities, together with his trademark features and characteristics, with the purpose of identifying what makes Aris’s creative design instantly recognisable and his output of illustration so distinctive. Chapter 2 discusses Aris’s relationship with the children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. Aris holds a unique place in history in that he was commissioned by Beatrix Potter to provide illustrations for her book and was the only artist with whom she seriously contemplated a professional working partnership (1916). However, Frederick Warne and Beatrix Potter later accused Aris of plagiarism and of exploiting any opportunity to achieve a commercial advantage. There is an argument to suggest that Aris’s affiliation with Potter and the allegations of plagiarism had a significant impact on his long term reputation and was possibly the reason for adopting the pseudonym Robin A. Hood. Chapter 3 examines the creative scope and features of Aris’s prestigious commercial partnerships. These start from the beginning of his professional career at the turn of the twentieth century, which coincided with the technical development and advancement of the colour picture postcard. Aris was at the forefront of this revolution, designing several series of comic and humorous postcards for leading printers that are now associated with and representative of a bygone era. In 1915 Aris was commissioned to design six tram posters, which were selected by Frank Pick at London Transport, as part of the National Collection of Posters. Pick single handedly revolutionised poster art in Britain and was responsible for establishing the national collection, where these posters now reside and have remained forgotten and out of sight for the last century. In the 1920s the trend for collecting novelty cigarette cards enabled Aris to produce a number of outstanding natural history designs as well as the infamous Frisky series, where his mischievous sense of humour is much evident in his trademark characters. Perhaps Aris’s final and greatest legacy, however, lies in the legendary Cococubs campaign for Bournville Children’s Cocoa, which was described as ‘one of the cleverest publicity schemes of the year.’1 The success of the advertising campaign meant demand outstripped supply of the product, as youngsters eagerly sought the ‘free toy in every tin’ promotional figurines that Aris designed (1934-1936). Volume II of this thesis comprises of a unique catalogue of Aris’s creative output over fifty years and spans a range of commercial fields of art. The catalogue is divided into four parts. Part one consists of Aris’s literary publications, with a detailed bibliographic record and image of the cover of each book that he wrote and illustrated under his own name and pseudonyms, as well as prominent books Aris illustrated for other eminent authors and a compendium list of books Aris illustrated for authors and other publications. Part two is a record of Aris’s commercial work, including the early series of pictorial postcards that he completed for leading quality publishers at the start of his career (1904-1909) and the six pictorial natural history posters, which Aris was commissioned to undertake for the London Transport tram system (1915). Part three comprises of Aris’s collectables and contains the four unique series of cigarette cards that Aris designed for leading tobacco manufacturers (issued 1929-1935). Part four includes a comprehensive description of each of the limited editions and subtle colour variants of the Cococub lead figurines inserted into Bournville Children’s Cocoa (1934-1936). The aim of the thesis is to justify why I believe Aris deserves further merit for his contribution within the field of illustration and commercial artwork. I have sought to highlight the factors that make his contribution and the success of his creative designs within these different fields so significant. 1 The Grocery and the Provision Merchant Journal, November 1934, p. 276.

Paris 10, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988PA100150.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to elucidate the image of the present Hispanic American cities and the city dweller through the following novels: Mexico in la region mas transparente and cambio de piel, c. Fuentes; caracas in pais portatil, a. Gonzalez leon; a Columbian metropolis in al pie de la ciudad, M. Mejia Vallejo; Lima in la ciudad y los perros, M. Vargas Llosa, and un mundo para Julius, A. Bryce Echenique; and Buenos Aires both in adan buenosayres, L. Marechal, and sobre heroes y tumbas, E. Sabato. The work is divided into four parts: the geographic frame, the study of the society, the urban communication analysis and the exploration of the poetical narratives. The disorganized and contrasted urban landscapes reflect the innumerable problems of an uncontrolled urban growth. The analysis of the romantic urban society reveals a structure fundamentally tripartite and strongly graded: the floating middle-class mass wavers between the indecent wealth of the oligarchy and the extreme dearth of the people. Violence and indifference prevail in the coded, repressive and off-putting urban space. Some myths and symbols, the narratives baroque and glaring structures, their expressionist styles are the metaphoric expression of the alarming brutality of the urban reality

Abstract:
The utopian novels written by Brod, Hauptmann, Döblin, Hesse, Werfel and Jünger share traits that give them a specific status within the history of utopia : their aim is not to voice a political or ideological message as efficiently as they can but to blur any such message or even dismiss it through various narrativ e strategies. This links them to the aesthetics of the modem novel. Furthermore. They all share a cyclical structure that relates to a specific theory of history and strongly queries the concept of progress. How such anti-utopianism is counterbalanced by the endings. Vhich invest the novels with positive, mystical bearings, thus radically modifying the compass of utopia. Such traits are characteristic of philosophical and literary trends contemporary with those novels, and tend to demonstrate a symptomatic self- destruction of reason in a field - utopia - which seemed to he its privileged sphere

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Alfred Hitchcock's last finished film, Family Plot (1976). Family Plot is an amusing light-hearted mystery which saw the Master return to sunnier climes (Northern California). But the notion that Hitchcock was mellowing is a false one. The last film he worked on, abandoned due to his failing health, was to be The Short Night. Based on the story of the escaped spy George Blake, starring Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, or Walter Matthau playing opposite Liv Ullmann or Catherine Deneuve and set in London and Finland, the script was to be written by Ernest Lehman, the screenwriter of North by Northwest (1959). However, Lehman left the project over Hitchcock's desire to include a graphic rape scene. This is history repeating itself, as a similar row about sexual violence had led The Birds (1963) screenwriter Evan Hunter to walk out on Marnie (1964).

Abstract:
This article seeks to understand how a family enterprise was structured and positioned and grew into a successful global mining house. The focus is on how talent was managed drawing ontology from the mining industry founded in 1873 in South Africa by British and Dutch colonists. The founding families are those of Deidrick and Johannes De Beer, Alfred Beit, Cecil Rhodes, Nathaniel Rothschild and Ernest Oppenheimer. The De Beer brothers sold out to Cecil Rhodes and his partners and the business was, amalgamated later with Anglo American Corporation. The business arrangement continued for four generations under the direction of the Oppenheimer family who were apprenticed by excellent craftsmen in the diamond trade, and educated in finance economics and law from Europe's best business schools, and a conducive segregated political environment which ended in a US Supreme Court judgment in 2012. However, the Oppenheimers nurtured the mining house to a successful international mining business that employs more than 20 000 people around the world today.
