Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractIn a general framework marked by human and economic decapitalization, as well as by the lack of dynamism and its scarce representation in our society, the Mediterranean rural areas confront the 21st century with precarious perspectives on their own viability and survival. The implications of this process of territorial weakening are enormous, whether focused on the anthropological, demographic, economic or environmental. It is necessary, therefore, to rethink the relationship that Spanish society maintains with this majority part of the territory, which requires tools and the action of agents that provide new perspectives to overcome ineffective actions due to their formality and detachment from the reality of rural areas and their problems. The present work, applying the strategies and tools of the local development paradigm, aims to recognize and analyze the heritage and territorial values of the olive grove of Alcolea (Almería). This, through a rethinking of its ecological, cultural and landscape role, can be transformed into a tool for endogenous and sustainable development, which will result in an improvement in the quality of life of the inhabitants of the area.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. Agricultural land management greatly affects soil properties. Microbial soil communities are the most sensitive and rapid indicators of perturbations in land use and soil enzyme activities are sensitive biological indicators of the effects of soil management practices. Citrus orchards frequently have degraded soils and this paper evaluates how land management in citrus orchards can improve soil quality. A field experiment was performed in an orchard of orange trees (Citrus Sinensis) in the Alcoleja Experimental Station (Eastern Spain) with clay-loam agricultural soils to assess the long-term effects of herbicides with inorganic fertilizers (H), intensive ploughing and inorganic fertilizers (P) and organic farming (O) on the soil microbial properties, and to study the relationship between them. Nine soil samples were taken from each agricultural management plot. In all the samples the basal soil respiration, soil microbial biomass carbon, water holding capacity, electrical conductivity, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, aggregate stability, cation exchange capacity, pH, texture, macronutrients (Na, Ca and Mg), micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu), calcium carbonate equivalent, calcium carbonate content of limestone and enzimatic activities (urease, dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase and acid phosphatase) were determined. The results showed a substantial level of differentiation in the microbial properties, which were highly associated with soil organic matter content. The management practices including herbicides and intensive ploughing had similar results on microbial soil properties. O management contributed to an increase in the soil biology quality, aggregate stability and organic matter content.

Abstract:
Purpose The aim of this original research is to evaluate the effect of SG on alcohol intake symptoms, blood alcohol content (BAC), and alcohol metabolite levels. Methods At 0–6–12 months after SG, BAC of patients was measured at 0, 15, 30, and 60 min, and then every 30 min, and urinary metabolite (ethanol and acetaldehyde) levels were measured 2 h after consuming a standard red wine drink. Symptoms perceived by patients were evaluated using symptom alcoholization post-obesity surgery scores. Results Thirty obese patients (12 men/18 women; mean body mass index, 44 ± 4 kg/m2) who underwent SG were enrolled in this study. At 12 months after SG, no alcohol use disorder was observed and BAC tended to peak after 15 min, with alcohol intoxication symptoms (nausea/vomiting, flushing, and diaphoresis), and return to zero after 90 min of wine intake. Ethanol and acetaldehyde levels were significantly different at 12 months compared with the levels at time 0 (p < 0.05). Conclusions Following SG, patients exhibit a high BAC at 15 min after moderate alcohol consumption accompanied with increased metabolite excretion and intoxication symptoms

Abstract:
Road and occupational accidents are important causes of death or disability. In Europe alcohol has been linked to 25% of lethal road accidents, killing about 10,000 people each year. Although the trend of accidents at work has been steadily decreasing in recent years, reportedly because of the application of a law banning alcohol use in the workplace [D.Lgs 81/2008, L 131/2003], the real percentage of deaths and injuries in the workplace directly related to alcohol is unknown. Data collected from INAIL records demonstrate that a relevant part of the occupational accidents is represented by traffic injuries. There is a general consensus and a strong scientific base that supports the correlation between alcohol and impairment. On these grounds, it is of the highest interest in the scientific, medical and insurance fields, to study the blood alcohol concentration in cases of occupational road accidents, in order to develop adequate policies to hinder the phenomenon. The Laboratory of Forensic Analytical Department of Diagnostic and Public Health, University of Verona analyzes, according to the procedures of modern toxicology, blood sampled from drivers involved in a road traffic accident with injuries in the emergency units of the hospitals of Verona. In the present study toxicological data was interfaced through a specific software with the database of INAIL in order to extrapolate those accidents that occurred at work during work-related road transfers. Type of work, type of injuries, gender, day and time of occurrence, age of the driver, were considered as variables of interest and analysed by using statistical methods 8459 cases (occurred between 2006 and 2013) of drivers involved in a road traffic accident with injuries have been enrolled.Comparing our toxicological results to the corresponding data deduced from the INAIL database, a 7,5% of traffic accidents occurred in workers with a blood alcohol concentration above 0 g/L. On this sample, in the 77% of subjects the blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit (0.5 g/L). Thus, although apparently with a much lower prevalence than in the general population, “driving under alcohol influence” occurs also among professional drivers, representing a severe problem for the road and workplace safety.
