Abstract:
The fresh eggs were collected and evaluated to effect of storage periods on internal and external characteristics in local chicken eggs. The mean value of the egg weight, egg width, shape index, albumin height, albumen weight, albumen percentage, albumin index, yolk height, yolk weight, yolk percentage, yolk index, shell thickness, shell weight, shell %, albumin pH, albumin protein and Haugh Unit are 58.60±0.84 g, 4.08±0.02 cm, 76.39±1.02, 5.40±0.16 mm, 33.67±0.37g, 58.07±0.55%, 6.76±0.49, 18.20±0.29 mm, 18.33±0.43 g, 44.27±0.91%, 44.27±0.91%, 0.29±0.02, 6.06±0.22, 10.39±0.25, 7.82±0.02, 11.77±0.07 and 72.63±1.34 in local chicken eggs. The data from current study indicates that with increase in storage period, a significant (P<0.01) decline was observed in various parameters like percentage weight loss, albumen height, yolk height, egg width, albumen index, yolk index, Haugh unit, albumen %, albumen weight, shell thickness and albumen protein. Contrary to this, albumen pH (P<0.01) was found to escalate with increase in storage period. Egg length, shell %and yolk % have significantly differed at (P<0.01) level. Shape index and shell weight showed no significant differences.

Abstract:
Chicken eggs provide essential nutrients to consumers around the world. Although both genetic and environmental factors influence the quality of eggs, it is unclear how these factors affect the egg traits including egg metabolites. In this study, we investigated breed and feed effects on 10 egg traits, using two breeds (Rhode Island Red and Australorp) and two feed conditions (mixed feed and fermented feed). We also used gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) to analyze 138 yolk and 132 albumen metabolites. Significant breed effects were found on yolk weight, eggshell weight, eggshell colors, and one albumen metabolite (ribitol). Three yolk metabolites (erythritol, threitol, and urea) and 12 albumen metabolites (erythritol, threitol, ribitol, linoleic acid, isoleucine, dihydrouracil, 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid, alanine, glycine, N-butyrylglycine, pyruvic acid, and valine) were significantly altered by feed, and a significant interaction between breed and feed was discovered in one albumen metabolite (N-butyrylglycine). Yolk and albumin had higher levels of sugar alcohols when hens were fed a fermented diet, which indicates that sugar alcohol content can be transferred from diet into eggs. Linoleic acid was also enriched in albumen under fermented feed conditions. This study shows that yolk and albumen metabolites will be affected by breed and feed, which is the first step towards manipulating genetic and environmental factors to create “designer eggs.”

Peningkatan nilai Haugh unit agar kualitas telur semakin baik dapat dilakukan dengan meninjau faktor yang berkorelasi dengan Haugh unit diantaranya lebar albumen, tinggi albumen dan indeks albumen. Adanya hubungan sebab-akibat menandakan adanya jalur pengaruh yang dapat diukur berapa besarnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi dan besar pengaruh lebar albumen, tinggi albumen, dan indeks albumen terhadap Haugh unit telur ayam ras. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode korelasional dan sampel diambil secara purposive sampling dari 300 butir telur ayam ras segar dengan kriteria keutuhan kerabang dan keseragaman bobot telur KV 10%, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan analisa jalur. Hasil analisis menunjukkan lebar albumen (X1) berkorelasi negatif dengan Haugh unit sebesar -0,554, sedangkan tinggi albumen (X2) dan indeks albumen (X3) berkorelasi positif, masing-masing sebesar 0,949 dan 0,936 (P<0,01). Tinggi albumen memiliki pengaruh paling tinggi terhadap nilai Haugh unit yaitu sebesar 74,39%. Adapun lebar albumen dan indeks albumen memiliki pengaruh lebih rendah, masing-masing sebesar 7,70% dan 10,95%. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa adanya korelasi antara lebar albumen, tinggi albumen dan indeks albumen dengan Haugh unit, dimana tinggi albumen paling besar pengaruhnya terhadap nilai Haugh unit.

Abstract:
The present study was carried on Dahlem Red chicken breed to assess the effect of age on egg quality traits. Total 250 eggs were collected from birds at different age groups, i.e. 21, 28, 40, 52 and 64 weeks of age for studying the external and internal egg quality parameters. The external characters like egg weight, egg length and egg width were measured. Thereafter, the egg was broken and the internal traits like albumen length, height, width of albumen, yolk height, yolk width, shell thickness were recorded using standard procedure. The derived traits like shape index, albumen index, yolk index and Haugh unit, were estimated. Most of the egg quality traits differed significantly at different age of measurements. Egg weight increased as the age of bird advanced and egg weight varied from 39.35±0.69 at 21 week of age to 59.3±1.22 at 64 week of age. Analysis of variance revealed that shape index did not differ significantly with age. Length, width and height of albumen increased as the age of bird progressed. Albumin index was significantly higher at 21 and 40 weeks of age. Similarly, yolk height and width increased as the age of bird advanced. The differences for Haugh unit scores were non-significant among the different age groups and varied within a very narrow range (96.94–98.94) at different ages indicating uniform internal egg quality over the age. Significant differences in shell thickness were observed among different age groups. Correlation coefficient between egg weight with egg length, egg width, albumen length, albumen height and yolk width were positive. Albumen index and Haugh unit were negatively correlated with egg weight at 21, 52 and 64 week of age. The result indicate that the age of bird significantly affects the egg quality parameters.

Haugh unit is one of the indicators that determine albumen quality. This study aims to know the correlation and the magnitude of the effect of albumen width, albumen height, and albumen index on the haugh unit of sentul chicken eggs. The research method used was correlational method. This research was using secondary data of 119 sentul chicken eggs and tested with normality test, linearity test, correlation, and path analysis used SPSS 26. The result showed that there was a correlation between albumen width, albumen height, and albumen index on the haugh unit of sentul chicken eggs and the effect of albumen height on the haugh unit of sentul chicken eggs is 83.13% and the effect of albumen index on the haugh unit of sentul chicken eggs is 9.78%.

Abstract. The Royal Vehicles Museum contains five albums of Albumin photographs dating from the 19th century. These photographs are poorly preserved in the basement of the Royal Vehicle Museum which is located on one of the most crowded streets, July 26 St., near the Nile River in Cairo. Due to the poor storage conditions of wooden boxes without treatment, it is unsafe against insects and microbiological damage, so they are vulnerable to rapid because the albumin photographs are composed of organic and inorganic materials, which makes them vulnerable to rapid damage. This paper presents documentation, preservation, and conservation of albumen photographic print-outs. Temperature, humidity, and UV were measured in the storage area by Data Luger. The deterioration aspect of the Royal Album and the albumen photographs has been identified. A condition report has been planned to record all the archaeological and historical information belonging to the album. SEM_EDX was used to identify the surface morphology and determine the type of silver salts used. The microbiological test was performed to identify fungi and bacteria. Growth requirements are determine. A portable scanner has digitized albumen photographs. USB Digital Microscope strongly enlarge 300× has been used to identify cracks, crevices, dirt, and other damages on the album and photographs. A stereo microscope 500× shows the structure of albumin photo prints.

Poultry eggs are not only a source of nutrients for embryonic development, but also one of the main sources of food for humans. The demand for turkey eggs is increasing day by day due to their functional properties such as supporting muscle and cell formation and being beneficial to the immune and digestive systems. In addition, it contains essential elements such as iron at a reasonable level, which is among the reasons for the consumer's preference. The data on the element content of free-range turkey eggs, which is such an ancient food, is very scarce. This study focused on determining various element content of freerange turkey egg yolk and albumen by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Within the scope of the research, sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), boron (B), aluminum (Al), and lead (Pb) levels were determined in turkey egg yolk (n=52) and albumen (n=52) samples. Phosphorus was the most concentrated element in both egg yolk and albumen. Element contents in yolks were higher than those in albumen, except Na, K, B, Al, and Pb. The element with the lowest concentration was Al in turkey egg yolks, while Mg was the lowest analyzed element in albumens. Enhanced albumen quality is reflected in increased thick albumen height, albumen weight, and Haugh unit value, while the antimicrobial, antioxidant, foaming, gelling, viscosity, and elasticity attributes are retained. Improved albumen quality is of benefit to consumers and to the food and health industries. Egg quality often declines during storage because eggs are highly perishable products and are most often not consumed immediately after oviposition. This review provides insights into albumen quality in terms of changes in albumen structure during storage, the influence of storage time and temperature, and the mitigation effects of natural dietary antioxidants of plant origin. During storage, albumen undergoes various physiochemical changes: loss of moisture and gaseous products through the shell pores and breakdown of carbonic acid, which induces albumen pH increases. High albumen pH acts as a catalyst for structural changes in albumen, including degradation of the β-ovomucin subunit and O-glycosidic bonds, collapse of the ovomucin-lysozyme complex, and decline in albumen protein–protein interactions. These culminate in declined albumen quality, characterized by the loss of albumen proteins, such as ovomucin, destabilized foaming and gelling capacity, decreased antimicrobial activity, albumen liquefaction, and reduced viscosity and elasticity. These changes and rates of albumen decline are more conspicuous at ambient temperature compared to low temperatures. Thus, albumen of poor quality due to the loss of functional and biological properties cannot be harnessed as a functional food, as an ingredient in food processing industries, and for its active compounds for drug creation in the health industry. The use of refrigerators, coatings, and thermal and non-thermal treatments to preserve albumen quality during storage are limited by huge financial costs, the skilled operations required, environmental pollution, and residue and toxicity effects. Nutritional interventions, including supplementation with natural antioxidants of plant origin in the diets of laying hens, have a promising potential as natural shelf-life extenders. Since they are safe, without residue effects, the bioactive compounds could be transferred to the egg. Natural antioxidants of plant origin have been found to increase albumen radical scavenging activity, increase the total antioxidant capacity of albumen, reduce the protein carbonyl and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of albumen, and prevent oxidative damage to the magnum, thereby eliminating the transfer of toxins to the egg. These products are targeted towards attenuating oxidative species and inhibiting or slowing down the rates of lipid and protein peroxidation, thereby enhancing egg quality and extending the shelf life of albumen.

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is a major foodborne pathogen primarily causing human infection through contaminated chicken eggs. To understand how SE survives in chicken egg albumen, we systematically and quantitatively analysed the survival properties of SE in egg albumen and identified factors affecting its survival. Survival assays of SE in egg indicate that egg albumen restricted the growth of SE. A major factor that controlled SE's growth in egg albumen was iron restriction, since egg albumen supplemented with iron allowed SE to grow, and iron acquisition mutants of SE showed decreased survival in egg albumen. In addition, low pH of albumen, high concentrations of bacteria and low incubation temperatures of bacteria with albumen facilitates the survival of SE. Our results suggest that egg albumen uses multiple mechanisms to control SE including iron limitation, surface interaction and possible enzymatic activities.

Abstract:
A single column cation exchange method was developed which allowed simultaneous recovery of lysozyme and avidin from undiluted egg white using a unique elution sequence which involved accumulation of avidin on the column through several cycles of egg white application and lysozyme elution. Lysozyme was recovered with higher yields than reported for the isoelectric precipitation methods often used in the industry (86% vs 60 - 80%) and in high purity. Avidin recovery was also as good or better than that of previously reported ion exchange methods (74 - 80% vs 17 -80%). The purity of the avidin fraction (up to 40.9%) was superior to other reported primary avidin fractions. Avidin was shown to have a greater potential for both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with Duolite C-464 than lysozyme but under the conditions of this separation, electrostatic interactions were dominant. Secondary purification of avidin by carboxymethyl celluose cation exchange (CMC), gel filtration, metal chelate interaction chromatography (MCIC), aliphatic hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), and Phenyl-Sepharose interaction chromatography (PSIC) each resulted in considerable increase in avidin purity. In terms of resin capacity, yields, and avidin purity however, CMC ion exchange was superior. A comparison of sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) andnative protein electrophoresis profiles gave clear evidence of protein - protein interaction between avidin and lysozyme in partially purified avidin preparations. This interaction may also occur between the native proteins in the egg white, but has not been demonstrated with certainty. The molar ratio of avidin to available biotin binding sites was estimated by 5 methods. For highly purified avidin samples the hydroxy azo benzoic acid (HABA) method proposed by Green (1965) was superior. A new method, utilizing an immobilized biotin column, which did not require extensive purification of avidin was found to give similar results. Finally, a highly sensitive assay of proteins bound to nitrocellulose membranes was developed which was capable of quantifying as little as 0.12 µg of protein. Membrane bound proteins were labeled with peroxidase via a biotin - avidin linkage as previously reported and bound peroxidase activity was related to initial protein content. The method was applicable to determination of the relative concentrations of different protein bands on Western blots of electrophoresis gels.

Le maïs constitue J'un des principaux aliments de base de la population de l'Est du Cameroun où toute la production maïsicole est faite par des paysans qui pratiquent une agriculture de subsistance. Parmi les facteurs qui limitent le rendement du maïs dans cette région, le streak (maladie virale transmise par un insecte du genre cicadelle) est l'un des plus importants. On a utilisé la méthodologie de la sélection récurrente pour sélectionner deux populations de maïs (l'une à albumen tendre et l'autre à albumen dur) pour la résistance contre le streak. En cas d'épidémie de steak les variétés résistantes ont une récolte normale alors que la récolte est presque nulle pour les variétés sensibles. La population à albumen tendre permet dans les conditions de culture traditionnelles d'avoir un gain de rendement d'environ soixante-dix pour cent par rapport à la variété locale non améliorée. Les corrélations entre caractères ont été étudiées dans les deux populations à albumen tendre et dur afin de rechercher les groupes de caractères liés à la qualité du grain. Certains de ces caractères tels que la longueur de l'épi et le diamètre de l'épi sont d'une part très fortement corrélés entre eux indépendamment du génotype et d'autre part très liés au rendement. Les caractères longueur de l'épi 1 longueur de la feuille et nombre de rangées de grains sont corrélés au facteur albumen tendre. Ces corrélations sont probablement d'ordre génétique. Maize is one of the principal staple foods of the population of the Eastern Cameroon where all maize production is produce by subsistance farmers. Among the factors that limit maize yield in this area, streak (A viral disease transmitted by a specific insect vector of the genus Cadulina) is one of the most important. Two maize populations (the first one with a soft endosperm and the second one with a hard endosperm) were selected for streak resistance using recurrent selection methodology. Ln cases of streak epidemy, these resistant varieties give a normal production whereas the production of the sensitive varieties is nearly null. Ln the traditional cultural conditions, the soft endosperm population out yields the unimproved local variety by seventy per cent. Correlations between characters were studied in the two populations with soft or hard endosperm to search groups of characters linked with grain quality. Some of these characters such as ear length and ear diameter are on one hand very highly correlated to each other independently of their genotype, and on the other hand very correlated with yield. Ear length, leaf length and kernel row number are correlated with soft endosperm factor. The origin of these correlations is probably genetics. Hypotheses on linkage situations are proposed

Abstract:
With prolonged storage especially at elevated temperatures, thick albumen deteriorates as it loses its viscous characteristics and this is regarded as a sign of reduced egg freshness and quality. Currently, HU is a widely used procedure for determining albumen quality. Proteomic analysis of egg albumen changes could provide a comprehensive understanding of egg freshness and used to assess egg quality during storage and processing. A core objective of this research was to identify and quantify proteins that change during albumen degradation with the potential to identify novel biomarkers of egg freshness and quality. The first efforts of identifying the protein changes in albumen used 2D-PAGE. The changes in albumen proteins were obvious after just 7d of storage at room temperature and this fitted with the more pronounced changes observed using conventional measures of egg quality. The N-TAILS approach to identifying protein changes in egg albumen was instigated and a number of antibacterial proteins were identified. Lysozyme C was identified in all samples. Lysozyme C changes associated with albumen degradation provides a potential biomarker of albumen quality and by association egg aging. The second objective of the project was to evaluate egg quality from different production systems. In retrospect, such an evaluation would have little relevance if some of the other factors such as hen age, ambient temperature and acute stress, could not be accounted for. After accounting for these there was no differences in the deterioration of egg quality during storage at commercial cool room conditions for eggs collected from free range or conventional cage production systems.

The present study investigated the in vitro antioxidant and ACE-inhibitory activities of egg albumen hydrolysate (EAR) prepared with pepsin and pancreatin enzymes. The EAR and peptides were purified by ultrafiltration (UF), gel filtration (GF), and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and tested for" antioxidant and ACE-inhibitory activities. Antioxidant activity was assessed by lipid peroxidation inhibition in a linoleic acid system using the ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) methods. The EAR, and 2, 5 and 10 kDa UP fractions, as well as the GF26 peptide fractions (I mg/ml) inhibited linoleic acid autoxidation, by 40, 76, 63, 53 and 79 % respectively, which was inversely related to peptide fraction size. However, 0.01 % butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and 0.01 % trolox had higher activity (95 and 82 %, respectively) compared with the peptide fractions (p<0.05). Similarly, inhibition of TBARS was in the order 29, 39, 27, 17, 70 and 78 % for EAR, 2 kDa, ' 5 kDa, 10 kDa, trolox and BHT respectively. The putative antioxidant mechanism of EAR involved scavenging activity based on the I, l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl (OH") and superoxide anion (02") radical scavenging assays, and ferric (Fe3+) reducing and ferrous (Fe2+) ion chelating activities in a dose-dependent manner. All peptide fractions exhibited ACE-inhibitory activity, based on the ACE-catalyzed liberation of hippuric acid from the hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-Ieucine residue, which improved on further GF and HPLC purification. The 2, 5 and 10 kDa peptides exhibited % ACE inhibitory activities of 78, 71 and 62 %, respectively, compared to the positive control captopril (96 %). The 2, 5 and 10 kDa peptides had ICso values of 6.01, 6.86 and 7.93 mg/ml respectively. Further, GF and HPLC purification of the 2 kDa peptides improved the ICso values to 5.76 and 5.13 mg/ml, respectively. Cell viability of human colon carcinoma mono-layer (caco-2) cell line, assayed by the tetrazolium dye (MTT) colorimetric assay confIrmed that the 2 kDa peptides were not toxic. The 2 kDa peptides (0.1 mg/ml) reduced most of the endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities in a dose-dependent manner, indicating scavenging of ROS. It was evident that a significant proportion of the 2 kDa peptides were resistant to cellular aminopeptidases present in caco-2 cell epithelium and were therefore transported in their intact forms across the caco-2 cell epithelium. In addition, The 2 kDa peptides exhibited significant ROS scavenging activity evidenced by enhanced viability of the Ea.hy926 (HUVECs) cell lines, using the lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescent and fluorescence methods. The results confirm that bioactive peptides derived from the EAH have significant antioxidant and ACE·inhibitory activities and potentially useful neutraceutical applications.

The lectin from the albumen gland of the Roman snail Helix pomatia has been widely used in studies relating glycosylation changes to the metastatic potential of cancer cells. Detailed information related to the sequence, structure and binding site of HPA lectin would assist in identifying the HPA binding partners on cancer cells. Availability of a recombinant form of HPA has the potential to be developed as a diagnostic tool for cancer prognostication. The work embodied in this thesis includes characterisation of the lectin from the albumen gland of Helix pomatia with the goal of obtaining an insight into the identity of the carbohydrate-binding partners on the membrane of cancer cells and producing a recombinant form of this lectin for diagnosis of metastatic cancer. For this purpose the study first identified the amino acid sequence of the HPA lectin, this was cloned into Escherichia coli with a view to obtaining a crystal structure of the agglutinin and its carbohydrate-binding site, to functionally analyse the carbohydratebinding properties of the recombinant lectin and allow comparison with the native material. A comparative analysis of in-house purified HPA and commercially sourced material provided evidence of heterogeneity in the agglutinin preparation. MS/MS analysis of the protein separated by isoelectrofocussing showed that more than one polypeptide sequence was present in the protein sample known as HPA. The cloning and identification of HPA lectin showed that three separate protein sequences were present in the lectin purified from the albumen gland of the Roman snail Helix pomatia. Two of the polypeptides are consistent with GalNAc binding lectins of the H-type family and were termed HPAI and HPAII. The third lectin (HPAIIJ) showed sequence similarity to a sialic acid binding lectin from another snail Cepaea hortensis and structural analysis of the novel protein suggests it will form a C1 q/TNF ' . like fold. The genes for all three polypeptides were cloned and recombinant forms of the proteins were prepared. Different expression plasmid constructs were evaluated. The results provide the first demonstration of successful cloning and expression of all three recombinant forms of the HPA isolectins using an E. coli expression system. A combination of crystal structure analysis and molecular modelling of the GalNAc/GlcNAc binding isolectins (HPAI and HPAII) from Helix pomatia has led to the identification of amino acids participating in direct hydrogen bonding with the carbohydrates and also amino acids involved in lectin trimer formation via noncovalent bonding. Functional analysis of HPAI and HPAII using surface plasmon resonance provided information on the affinity of binding of native and recombinant material to GalNAc/GlcNAc carbohydrates attached to bovine serum albumin. The interactions were observed to be of the same order of magnitude for both native and recombinant material. Glycan chip microarray studies showed that recombinant HPAI and HPAII recognised similar binding partners to native HPA and agglutination studies showed that the recombinant forms of the HPAI and HPAII isolectins were functional in clumping blood group A red blood cells. The recombinant forms of the lectin produced in this study are valuable tools for Glycobiology studies to analyse changes in the posttranslational glycosylation in normal and cancer cells as detected using HPA. The recombinant lectins may also be used in microbiology, serology and other glycome analyses. Structural information on the carbohydrate-binding site of the HPA lectins may later be used to identify their binding partners on the membrane of malignant cells and this might in turn lead to a better understanding of changes in glycosylation that governs the metastatic potential of cancer cells.

Objectives 1. Establish diagnostic procedures to identify tolerant carrier birds based on a) Isolation of ALV-J from blood, b) Detection of group-specific antigen in cloacal swabs and egg albumen. Application of these procedures to broiler breeder flocks with the purpose of removing virus positive birds from the breeding program. 2. Survey the AL V-J infection status of foundation lines to estimate the feasibility of the eradication program 3. Investigate virus transmission through the embryonated egg (vertical) and between chicks in the early post-hatch period (horizontal). Establish a model for limiting horizontal spread by analyzing parameters operative in the hatchery and brooder house. 4. Compare the pathogenicity of AL V-J isolates for broiler chickens. 5. Determine whether AL V-J poses a human health hazard by examining its replication in mammalian and human cells. Revisions. The: eradication objective had to be terminated in the second year following the closing down of the Poultry Breeders Union (PBU) in Israel. This meant that their foundation flocks ceased to be available for selection. Instead, the following topics were investigated: a) Comparison of commercial breeding flocks with and without myeloid leukosis (matched controls) for viremia and serum antibody levels. b) Pathogenicity of Israeli isolates for turkey poults. c) Improvement of a diagnostic ELISA kit for measuring ALV-J antibodies Background. ALV-J, a novel subgroup of the avian leukosis virus family, was first isolated in 1988 from broiler breeders presenting myeloid leukosis (ML). The extent of its spread among commercial breeding flocks was not appreciated until the disease appeared in the USA in 1994 when it affected several major breeding companies almost simultaneously. In Israel, ML was diagnosed in 1996 and was traced to grandparent flocks imported in 1994-5, and by 1997-8, ML was present in one third of the commercial breeding flocks It was then realized that ALV-J transmission was following a similar pattern to that of other exogenous ALVs but because of its unusual genetic composition, the virus was able to establish an extended tolerant state in infected birds. Although losses from ML in affected flocks were somewhat higher than normal, both immunosuppression and depressed growth rates were encountered in affected broiler flocks and affected their profitability. Conclusions. As a result of the contraction in the number of international primary broiler breeders and exchange of male and female lines among them, ALV-J contamination of broiler breeder flocks affected the broiler industry worldwide within a short time span. The Israeli national breeding company (PBU) played out this scenario and presented us with an opportunity to apply existing information to contain the virus. This BARD project, based on the Israeli experience and with the aid of the ADOL collaborative effort, has managed to offer solutions for identifying and eliminating infected birds based on exhaustive virological and serological tests. The analysis of factors that determine the efficiency of horizontal transmission of virus in the hatchery resulted in the workable solution of raising young chicks in small groups through the brooder period. These results were made available to primary breeders as a strategy for reducing viral transmission. Based on phylogenetic analysis of selected Israeli ALV-J isolates, these could be divided into two groups that reflected the countries of origin of the grandparent stock. Implications. The availability of a simple and reliable means of screening day old chicks for vertical transmission is highly desirable in countries that rely on imported breeding stock for their broiler industry. The possibility that AL V-J may be transmitted to human consumers of broiler meat was discounted experimentally.
