Physiol. 82(1): 111–117, 1997.—Plasma immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide (irANP) and blood-to-tissue clearance of 131I-labeled rat serum albumin (CRSA) were examined in anesthetized rats during hypoxic ventilation ( n = 5–7/group). Hypoxia (10 min) increased irANP from 211 ± 29 (room air) to 229 ± 28 (15% O2, not significant), 911 ± 205 (10% O2), and 4,374 ± 961 pg/ml (8% O2), respectively. Graded increases in CRSA were significant at 8% O2 in fat (3.6-fold), ileum (2.2-fold), abdominal muscles (2.0-fold), kidney (1.8-fold), and jejunum (1.4-fold). CRSA was decreased in back skin and testes; heart, brain, and lungs were unaffected. The increases in CRSAwere related to irANP and not to arterial[Formula: see text]. Circulating plasma volume was negatively correlated with whole body CRSA. Graded increases in extravascular water content (EVW) were found in the kidney, left heart, and cerebrum and were positively related to CRSA in the kidney. EVW decreased in gastrointestinal tissues; the magnitude was inversely related to CRSA. We conclude that ANP-induced protein extravasation contributes to plasma volume contraction during acute hypoxia.

Abstract:

Albert, T. S. E., V. L. Tucker, and E. M. Renkin.Atrial natriuretic peptide levels and plasma volume contraction in acute alveolar hypoxia. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(1): 102–110, 1997.—Arterial oxygen tensions ([Formula: see text]), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) concentrations, and circulating plasma volumes (PV) were measured in anesthetized rats ventilated with room air or 15, 10, or 8% O2( n = 5–7). After 10 min of ventilation, [Formula: see text] values were 80 ± 3, 46 ± 1, 32 ± 1, and 35 ± 1 Torr and plasma immunoreactive ANP (irANP) levels were 211 ± 29, 229 ± 28, 911 ± 205, and 4,374 ± 961 pg/ml, respectively. At[Formula: see text] ≤40 Torr, irANP responses were more closely related to inspired O2( P = 0.014) than to[Formula: see text] ( P= 0.168). PV was 36.3 ± 0.5 μl/g in controls but 8.5 and 9.9% lower ( P ≤ 0.05) for 10 and 8% O2, respectively. Proportional increases in hematocrit were observed in animals with reduced PV; however, plasma protein concentrations were not different from control. Between 10 and 50 min of hypoxia, small increases (+40%) in irANP occurred in 15% O2; however, there was no further change in PV, hematocrit, plasma protein, or irANP levels in the lower O2groups. Urine output tended to fall during hypoxia but was not significantly different among groups. These findings are compatible with a role for ANP in mediating PV contraction during acute alveolar hypoxia.

CDC Tucker and CDC Leroy are forage pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivars released in 2006 and 2008, respectively, by the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, for distribution to Select seed growers in Saskatchewan and Alberta through the Variety Release Program of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers. Both cultivars have a semileafless leaf type, high biomass production, good biomass quality, good seed yield, and resistance to powdery mildew (caused by Erysiphe pisi Syd.). Both cultivars have superior lodging resistance to the check cultivars Trapper and 40-10, but with slightly greater seed weight. CDC Tucker and CDC Leroy had similar lodging resistance and grain yield compared with the field pea check cultivar CDC Minuet.Key words: Pea, Pisum sativum L., cultivar description

Abstract:
As two white female teachers, we look back on our teaching experiences in Hong Kong and Northern Alberta to disrupt problematic diversity narratives from our first classrooms. Through critical auto-ethnographic approaches and cellphilming (cellphone + video-production), we analyze our engagement with privilege within our classrooms. We found that we both promoted uncomplicated conceptions of diversity, and each engaged in what Eve Tuck (2009) has described as damaged-centered approaches—teaching practices that established, “harm or injury in order to achieve reparation” (p. 413). We see these experiences as a case study in how to look back productively to change the way we teach in the present and future toward visions of justice.

Lee, Brian. "A Matter of National Concern: The Kennedy Administration and Prince Edward County, Virginia." VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1877.

Full text
Abstract:
A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN examines the Kennedy Administration’s contribution to the restoration of public education in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and determines if those actions support the dominant narrative of Kennedy’s overall civil rights record – a historical assessment generally generated from a few acute crises. For five consecutive years (1959-1964), in defiance of federal court orders, the county board of supervisors refused to levy taxes to operate public schools, marking Prince Edward County as the only locale in the nation without free public education. The county leadership organized a segregated private school system for the 1,400 white children, but afforded no formal education for the 1,700 African American students. The Kennedy Administration inherited the Prince Edward County school situation – a crisis that threatened to cripple a generation, and, if replicated, destroy public education. In the Prince Edward County school dilemma, the Kennedy Administration took proactive measures, proved sympathetic to the plight of African Americans, challenged Virginia’s congressional delegation, and appointed federal judges that supported President Kennedy’s civil rights agenda. The Prince Edward County story generally, and the federal government’s actions specifically, have been virtually overlooked by historians. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN challenges scholars to re-evaluate the Kennedy Administration’s civil rights record by including all of the civil rights events of the Kennedy years, thus developing a thorough, comprehensive assessment. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN is the product of the study of unpublished archival documents, oral histories, interviews, newspaper reports, and secondary sources. Abstract:
In June 1829, Joseph Smith and Martin Harris began contacting printers, including Thurlow Weed, who declined a contract, and Egbert B. Grandin, who eventually agreed to publish the Book of Mormon. Oliver Cowdery prepared a printer’s copy of the manuscript, and printing began in late August or early September. Employees of the print shop, including Pomeroy Tucker, Albert Chandler, and John H. Gilbert, later described the process in detail. During this same period, Cornelius Blatchly published an early newspaper article about the Book of Mormon, Abner Cole began illegally publishing extracts from the Book of Mormon, and a controversial revelation dealing with the Canadian copyright was dictated. In March 1830, the Wayne Sentinel announced the publication of the Book of Mormon.

Full text
Abstract:
The term ‘Emotional Finance’ normally denotes a methodological approach advocated by Richard Taffler and David Tuckett, which they intended as a challenge both to Behavioral Finance and to mainstream finance and economics. In the wake of the Great Financial Crisis, Emotional Finance received a warm reception from regulators, the financial press, and the CFA Institute. Nearly a decade on, their ideas have largely failed to achieve traction in the academic literature, and continue to struggle to find empirical validation. Their approach is essentially an application of Kleinian psychoanalysis to financial markets, albeit without the terminological rigor that psychoanalytic practitioners might expect. Because their approach is inherently interdisciplinary, it has rarely been subject to scrutiny, as few psychoanalytic commentators feel qualified to comment on financial markets, and fewer finance academics feel comfortable commenting on the psychoanalytic theory. This chapter characterizes the main theoretical claims of Emotional Finance, and subjects each of them to scrutiny, finding them largely untenable. Although financial bubbles are commonplace and emotional responses to markets unremarkable, the subsidiary arguments advanced by advocates of Emotional Finance to support their primary claims are found wanting. The interpretative strategy of Emotional Finance is fundamentally flawed. Although it is fruitful to analyze the role of emotions in financial markets, more precise, rigorous and realistic approaches to these problems are needed.
