Full texts traces in the dramatization of uncertainty, alienation and the question of freedom. Albee&rsquo
s characters do not have fixed identities, and they suffer from their identity problems. The notion of Other enhances this uncertainty. The ambiguity of existence, whether they really are or not, presents another problem for these characters. Their lives are based on illusions, and the line between the reality and fantasy is absent. Alienation of the human being from the self and the others is another existential theme that Albee deals with. Alienation is partly caused by lack of communication, and as a result, the isolated self is entrapped in his own condition. Freedom becomes a confusing question in his works as it makes the characters anxious while choosing one option among various others on his own, and as it renders the characters responsible for their free choices. So, the characters tend to be passive agents in life, which is in fact another choice. Albee extends Beckett&rsquo
s absurdist ideas and adopts the Absurd Drama to highlight his social concerns as he is also a social critic. The targets of his criticism are materialism, loss of values and broken human relationships. The playwright challenges the audience for a reform on these points.

Full textA patrician key figure of the theatrical landscape, the worthy heir of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, Edward Albee (1928-2017) has breathed new life into the American theatre. His iconoclastic body of work, which was met with sneering, dismay or enthusiasm, disproves the split between the real, its appearances and imagination. An imaginative, provocative playmaker, Albee aims at producing a “realistic” drama by tackling the problem of the links between appearances and reality in the Theatrum Mundi on various levels : social (role and human dimension), logical (meaning and absurdity), psychological (reason and madness), as well as on the level of performance (character and actor). Through the game metaphor, this study focuses on the playwright’s last plays, which are rife with philosophical interrogations and stage the Subject’s initiatory journey between representation and experience, imagination and reality. As a player, Albee’s protean character prepares backstage to audition for his role on the stage of the Theatrum Mundi. Imbued with mystery, poetry, wisdom, comicality and pathos, the playwright’s original playground, where an experience of truth is under way, brings forth an optimistic, humanistic vision that opens onto the aesthetic experience of catharsis

The Zoo Story (1959-60), Who¿s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), Box / Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1968) e The Man Who Had Three Arms (1983).
Abstract: Reputed as one of the most controversial and enigmatic works in modern North American theatre, Tiny Alice (1964-5) comprises lay brother Julian¿s journey from the beginning of his involvement with Miss Alice, a benefactor who will donate millions to the Catholic Church, to his death as a sacrifice to the divinity Alice. By examining both linguistic and symbolic configurations of the play, this study identifies as its central motives the demonstration of verbal language¿s restrictiveness to command metaphysics, and the exposure of religious beliefs¿ irrevocable artificiality. Notwithstanding the critical treatment consecrated to the linguistic system, depicted as ambiguous, inefficient and delusory, Tiny Alice neither discredits nor invalidates it as a mechanism for analysis and representation. In fact, the play affirms the clarifying power of verbal language. Similarly, although postulating the impossibility of transcendence in microcosms, it allows Julian to reach the macrocosm propelled by verbosity. This investigation also examines the characters and their motivations and actions outside the linguistic domain, according to intertextualities between the play and other titles from the albeean canon, such as The Zoo Story (1959-60), Who¿s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), Box / Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (1968) and The Man Who Had Three Arms (1983). Finally, it dedicates utmost importance to Julian¿s final monologue, frequently labeled as ilogical and absurd by critics. Replete with unstable self-reference, mentions of events based on dissimilar temporalities, different interlocutors and several literary borrowings, the final speech is nevertheless considered by the study as entirely coherent, revealing and efficient in showing the overall significance of the play, as well as in celebrating literary craft

Full textIn the play Three Tall Women, the American playwright Edward Albee states that one of his characters is based on his adoptive mother. For this reason, American critics consider the play essentially an autobiography of its author. It is true that Edward Albee has used some elements of his life in his play, but Three Tall Women is not limited to that: Edward Albee\'s autobiography is like a tool for the crushing criticism concerning some values supported by the American high-middle class. A great part of the American critics emphasizes the autobiography element concerning the play Three Tall Women, but definitely they do not mention the aspect of criticism about the American ideology in the play. In this way, this paper aims to identify and to analyze the elements of criticism concerning the American society found in the play Three Tall Women through the characters dialogues. Finally, this paper also aims to analyze the convergence between form and theme; the most adequate form, chosen by the author, for the presentation of such theme.

Full textThis paper explores interdisciplinary aspects related to the transposition of dramatic texts into films. First, a theoretical investigation is conducted on mimetic genre, transtextuality; on drama, from the point of view of the game as a dramatic element to build implicit and explicit metadrama, and film adaptation. Secondly, this dissertation analyzes two plays, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? , by Edward Albee, and Closer , by Patrick Marber, as well as their film adaptations by director Mike Nichols, and examines the elements and features that the authors use to create the dramatic games. Later, the plays and their film adaptations are contrasted in order to investigate elements of dramatic games, and transtextual characteristics that allow the maintenance or the alteration of meaning between the plays and their correspondent films.

power and alienation. After this, the idea of violence and language are examined in relation to the development of power and alienation. The thesis then provides brief information about the absurdist tradition to which the plays The Zoo Story and The Lesson belong. After the analysis of the dislocation of power and alienation with the use of dramatic violence in these two plays, it presents brief information about &ldquo

theatre and the paralellism between this theatre and the absurd tradition. Finally, the idea of dislocation of power and alienation in Blasted, which belongs to a later period, is illustrated to show the actuality of the theme violence and its effects in Western drama.

Full textThis study of Edward Albee, David Mamet and Sam Shepard has enabled us to emphasize one of the most essential paradox in contemporary artistic and literary creation. Indeed, the three playwrights have built up a highly original language while precisely giving up the Romantic ideal of originality. Based on repetitions and on hackneyed elements, the plays develop their own structures around the notion of cliché. Although the cliché may appear as a sign of the failure and of the dysfunctioning nature of this typical American dramatic language, it can also work the other way round and become a device that produces meaning. Thus, the aesthetics of these plays is one that revolves around the concepts of banality and déjà-vu: a real poetics of the cliché

They are classified as active and passive forms and analyzed while the parallelism and differences between these two playwrights'

Full textAlbee, genet, ionesco and pinter belong to the theatre of the absurd. Our objective was therefore to establish certain affinities between these playwrights in order to justify their classification in this form of drama and then to try and find a definition for the word "absurd", other than the one related to metaphysics. We pointed out that one of the characteristics of the subconcious is its tendency to deform images of "reality", that is to make them "grotesque" or "absurd". The dramatic techniques used by our four authors are centred round the rendering of this phenomenon onto the stage. The theatre of the absurd should not be considered as a dramatic form devoted only to metaphysical anguish but more broadly as a "theatre of the subconcious" highlighting all of man's anguishes and illusions. Several theories taken from freud, r. D. Laing, s. Nacht, and sartre have been used as starting points for a certain number of the chosen themes. We also established a relationship between each author's life and his works. The first chapter - identity - is divided into 1) integration into the group, 2) rejection by the group, and3) ritual and collusion (as defined by laing). We examined group psychology at every level : the gregarious instinct, the leader's role, as well as various types of groups : the family, large "masses" (e. G. Natio- nal, ethnic, political, and religious), social classes (middle, working classes. . . ). And various forms of social groups (friends, criminals, homosexuals, artists, intellectuals. . . ). The second and final chapter (sexuality) studies the father mother child relation- ship ; castration ; homosexuality ; masochism ; and impotence (as a result of elderliness or of remnants of childish traits in man, as well as that expressed by aggressiveness towards women or by an intellectual or creative "impotence"

Full textThe empirical evidence that intraspecic cooperation - denoted as Allee efeect - can play the role of an additional factor in the regulation of population dynamics alongside with intraspecic competition has generated a new contingent of population dynamical models. In this work one analyzes population dynamical models under the Allee eect in the following contexts: (i) unstructured and structured single population both in discrete and continuous time settings (ii)unstructured multispecies systems such as, predation, interspecic interference competition and interspecic exploitative competition for a biotic resource. An outstanding outcome that is present in most models concerns the existence of multiple stable equilibrium points, implying that the ultimate convergence will depend on initial conditions. In a one-species setting, these multiple stable states can represent population persistence or deterministic extinction. Likewise, in the multispecies setting, they can represent: (i) overall species coexistence (ii) extinction of a subset of the overall species (iii) overall species extinction. Therefore, in areas of applied ecology such as pest control and conservation, these results bring out the need for precise species parameter estimates as well as stock assessment in order to achieve their predened goals.

Full textThe one-species population growth dynamics is permeated by the relationship between the harms from the intraspecific competition and the benefits from the presence of conspecifics. For many species, the benefits from conspecific cooperation may outweigh the harms from competition. The positive correlation between population size and total fitness in very small population known as demographic Allee effect. Although there are isolated mathematical models for different types of Allee effects, there is not a simple model that covers and connects them to more general growth models (like Richards). We propose to unify models of Allee effects and the Richards growth one in a model that allows a new perspective on the demographic Allee effect. An example of the increased descriptive possibilities of such generalization is the emergence of more than one transition cooperation-competition when considering a particular case of this new model (Gompertz-Allee). Despite the importance of population growth, most basic models of infectious diseases transmission considers population size constant or adopts implausible simplifications. In this thesis, we show the shortcomings of a dynamic compartmental model of tuberculosis already established and we propose a new model with population logistic growth. When compared, our model provides more pessimistic forecasts for the eradication of the disease in the long term if it is tested with parameters that define inefficient control policies. We perform such predictions adopting control strategies from developed and underdeveloped countries. Since these compartmental model disregards spatial aspects, we developed a computational agent model, based on the proposed model, with two underlying structures: random networks and real networks. The sudden emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis as a result of ineffective treatments is also a result from the implementations of these models in two distinct scenarios. These results are compared with the ones from a compartimental model and with the ones from a model with simpler underlying structure and, as a new result, the possibility of eradicating the disease in less than a decade after beginning the treatment appears on the two models. This result is possible adopting effective control strategies.

Full textThis thesis investigates introduction strategies of populations in the environment. Two main situations are considered: biological control and species reintroduction. Although these two kinds of introductions are different, many biotic and abiotic processes influence them in a similar way. Introduced populations are often small and may be sensitive to various stochastic factors. Further, small populations may suffer from a decrease of their growth rate when the population is small, a feature called "Allee effect". These processes may interact with introduction strategies and modulate their efficiency. First, we represent the introduction process using impulsive dynamical systems: population dynamics are described by ordinary differential equations that are disrupted at some instants by instantaneous increases of the population size. This approach focuses on the influence of Allee effects on single-species (reintroduction) or predator-prey interactions (biological control). Then, we concentrate on the reintroduction approach and extend the previous deterministic framework to take into consideration stochastic factors arising from the environment or from introductions themselves. Finally, we consider an individual-based model to study the effects of demographic stochasticity which is inherent to small populations. These different approaches allow to investigate the temporal distribution of introductions and determine which introduction strategies maximize the probability of success of introductions

Abstract: We present an integro-difference model for a plant dispersal, which couples a reproductive dynamic with Allee effect and dispersal dynamic in a heterogeneous environment. We propose diffusion and settling model to derive theoretical dispersal kernels that represent the seed dispersal pattern generated by frugivores birds in a heterogeneous environment. The dispersal kernel derived through the model is able to reproduce the aggregate seed dispersal pattern generated by the frugivores birds under field conditions. As for the reproductive dynamic, we consider an Allee effect due to pollen limitation, which reduces seed production. We introduce the Allee effect through a probability function, which depends on the local plant density. The plant expansion behavior is analyzed, and the average expansion speed is estimated. The model shows a pulsed invasion, which we attribute to the Allee effect and the plant dispersal behavior

Abstract: We present a mathematical model which couples the reproductive dynamic with an Allee effect and a long distance diseprsal of an invasive plant. We consider an Allee effect due to pollen limitation, which reduces seed production. We introduce the Allee effect through a probability function that describes pollen-stigma encounters as function of the population density. To model the dispersal process we used integro-diference equations (IDE) and employed a mixed kernel which represents the local and long distance dispersal processes. We analyzed the local dynamic through the stability of their equilibrium points. For the spatial dynamic we used numerical simulations, that allowed us to observe the spatial displacement of the invasion front. This permitted us to compute the expansion speeds. We determined the inuence of the Allee effect, reproductive capacity and the long distance diseprsal on the invasion speeds. We observed than an Allee effect turns accelerating expansion speeds into constant speeds. Expansion speeds decreases with Allee effect intensity but increases with the reproductive capacity of the population. Long distance dispersal produces higher invasion speeds, but for strong intensities of the Allee effect, the increase is not significant in relation to the speeds generated by the local dispersal. Our results show that while dispersal contributes to expansion speeds, it also turns the population more susceptible to extinction.
