Abstract:
The Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) is a species in decline, classified as near threatened (NT) worldwide, and vulnerable (VU) in Norway. In Akershus county, southeastern Norway, the population of breeding Eurasian Curlews was estimated at 50-60 pairs in 1982. No recent update exists of this population size estimate. In this study, we assessed the population size in 2017 in Akershus, and examined how the population size changed between 1971 and 2017 by using historical observation records of Eurasian Curlews. We estimated that there were 30 territories in Akershus in 2017 and found that the population declined by 47% since 1995 and 77% since 1971. In the period 1995-2017, the yearly rate of decline was 2.8%. We discuss possible reasons for the decline, such as intensive agricultural practices, high nest predation rates, and large-scale threats on the wintering grounds.

Abstract:
Adenocarcinomas of rectum and colon may be different with regard to the cellular biological basis for cancer development. A material of 246 rectal cancers removed surgically at Akershus University Hospital in the years 1992–2000 was investigated and was compared to a material of 219 colon cancers operated on at Akershus University Hospital during the years 1988, 1990 and 1997–2000. There were highly significant differences between the rectal and the colon cancers in the protein expression of cyclin D1, cyclin D3, cyclin E, nuclearβ-catenin, and c-Myc and in gene amplification of cyclin A2, cyclin B1, cyclin D1, and cyclin E. Gene amplification and protein expression in the rectal cancers correlated significantly for the cyclins B1, D3, and E. A statistically significant relation was observed between overexpression of cyclin A2 and local relapse of rectal carcinomas, as higher expression of cyclin A2 was associated with lower local recurrence rate.

Abstract:
The article proposes that non-hierarchical participatory models in the lineage of community-based arts practice might offer interesting strategies for mainstream, professional Norwegian theatre today. The article argues that the P:UNKT project at Akershus Theatre initiated with the purpose of supporting integration in the region, offered a significant opportunity for the professional, state-funded theatre to enhance its relationship with the population. The research study demonstrates that the P:UNKT project entailed several dilemmas and tensions embedded in the social-cultural context that was challenging to negotiate. The analysis of the different perspectives involved will demonstrate that the project was not only potentially transformative for the non-professional participants but also for the host theatre itself. Through P:UNKT the theatre developed new ways of creating relationships and collaborations with the population in the region. This strengthened the audience infrastructure and the connectedness with the community. The article argues that the project potentially offered an opportunity for Akershus Theatre to develop innovative practices and to redefine its own purpose as an arts institution in a multicultural Norway in the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
Aims: To investigate Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test scores in a cohort aged 63–65 years from a general population in relation to the proposed cut-off score of 26 for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to explore the impact of education. Methods: MoCA scores were assessed in the Akershus Cardiac Examination 1950 Study, a cross-sectional cohort study of all men and women born in 1950 living in Akershus County, Norway. The participants were aged 63–65 at the time of data collection. Results: MoCA scores were available in 3,413 participants, of which 47% had higher education (>12 years). The mean MoCA score was 25.3 (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.2–25.4), and 49% had a score below the suggested cut-off of 26 points. Those with higher education had significantly higher scores (mean 26.2, 95% CI 26.1–26.3 vs. 24.4, 95% CI 24.3–24.6, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Approximately 50% scored below the cut-off score of 26 points, suggesting that the cut-off score may have been set too high to distinguish normal cognitive function from MCI. Educational level had a significant impact on MoCA scores.

Abstract:
Background:In 1996, regulations regarding control and prevention of healthcare-associated infections in all healthcare institutions were implemented in Norway. It became mandatory for all healthcare facilities to have an infection control program. Objective: To describe to what extent long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Akershus County have implemented infection control programs including guidelines and surveillance. Methods: A repeated, cross-sectional survey was performed among the LTCFs in Akershus County in 2001 and in 2005. A questionnaire was developed in 2001 investigating infection control programs including regulatory issues, guidelines, occupational health and training. In 2005, the questionnaire was expanded to include additional questions regarding policies and guidelines on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), isolation containment, collaboration with the microbiology laboratory and immunization policies. The questionnaire was sent to the head managing nurse of each LTCF in the county. Additionally, we searched for participation of LTCFs in the national prevalence surveys on healthcare-associated infections and for MRSA positive cases in the databases of Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Results: The number of LTCFs with an infection control program increased from 24 (48%) in 2001 to 45 (80%) in 2005 (Relative risk (RR) =1.6, 95% Confidence interval (CI): 1.2-2.3). There was an increasing knowledge about the county’s infection control program (RR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.1). The LTCF’s head managing nurses perceived having an infection control program as important (mean=6.2, range 6.0-6.5 on a scale of 1 to 7). Conclusion: There has been an increased attention towards infection control in LTCFs in Akershus County, Norway. National regulations and repeated national prevalence surveys on healthcare-associated infections may have contributed to this improvement.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to obtain a better understanding and a better knowledge of how librarians in a University College of Applied Sciences cooperate regarding information sharing. Seven librarians were studied by using semi-structured interviews. The analysis has a sociocultural perspective, which means that the informants have been studied as they are part of a social practice; a work practice, in an academic context. The results show that Kemmis’ theory of practice, with three dimensions of the practice, identified as a) cultural-discursive, b) social and c) material-economic, has been a useful tool for presenting a diverse picture of a social practice in this academic context. The interview guide had questions which were formulated in terms of information sharing and cooperation, with these divisions: Formalia, Work, Forms of cooperation, Use of information and Cooperation regarding information sharing in work practice.

Abstract:
Preparing for crisis is a challenge. To be prepared to handle a crisis, organizationshave to practice. Crisis management exercises are never performed as often theyshould, as it is expensive and takes long time to plan. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how public bodies and other organizations inAkershus plan and execute crisis management exercises. The thesis aims to evaluateinterest and survey pre-conditions and useful features for a digital tool to complementtraditional contingency exercises.A qualitative approach has been applied in form of interviews and literature review asthe objective is to achieve comprehension of the interviewed organizations routinesand practices, and the circumstances which may affect their need for a digital trainingtool.Six key factors in crisis management are identified in the literature review. Thefactors are: flexibility, communication, cooperation and coordination as well asinformation and improvisation. In addition, methods to understand how users interactwith technology as well as how to design responsive web pages were explored. The analysis is based on empirical results from five interviews from fiveorganizations. The empirical results were compared to the key factors from theliterature review. The study shows that the most of the interviewed organizations use CIM®, and thatall of them implement tabletop or scenario exercises in their training. The interviewedorganizations believe that a digital tool for contingency exercises can be acontribution to traditional exercises, but there are issues concerning how cooperationand communication can be maintained in any digital tool to be used in an area wherefunctional communication and cooperation is necessary.

Abstract:
Akershus Castle is one of Norway’s most important historical monuments and is listed with the highest grade of protection. The earlier medieval castle from around the year 1300 is an arena for the Norwegian state and in use for such as government dinners and receptions. The castle is also an important tourist destination and is used for public events like concerts, etc. Until today, people in wheelchair have had to be carried into the buildings due to stairs and differences in levels inside. In the autumn of 2021 five measures that make large parts of the castle accessible, were completed. Making public buildings accessible has high priority in Norway. Having achieved this at Akershus Castle is of great symbolic value. During the process of defining the projects extent and measures the method values-based conservation was applied. This was done through involving several stakeholders in assessing and quantifying an array of values and criteria. On this basis it was possible to define the project, achieve the permits from the heritage authorities and get acceptance from the organisations representing people with disabilities. The result has been very well received by the public, stakeholders and by the cultural heritage authorities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Design and manufacturing of dental restorations has evolved to embrace digital technology. So too has the paradigm of learning and teaching dental prosthetics. Once a didactic teacher-driven process, it has become student-focused, reliant on collaboration and directed toward employability. This chapter describes the stages, processes, and experiences of developing a collaborative partnership to “internationalize” dental technologist curricula which led to a model for developing shared digital resources and enhanced work-integrated learning. The discussion is supported by reflection of dental technology student learning experiences from Oslo and Akershus University College and Griffith University. Issues, controversies, and problems are explored through a descriptive analysis of experiences that aim to encourage other academics to rethink curriculum design, delivery, and assessment to create international partnerships. International collaboration in higher education can provide academics with a platform to share digital resources and create flexible, transferable qualifications.

Abstract:
In. L. Frank Baum’s Boy Fortune Huntersseries, penned under the pseudonym Floyd Akers, the eponymous heroes, led by Sam Steele, travel across the globe in search of adventure and treasure. During their journeys to such destinations as Panama, Egypt, China, and the South Seas, the boys frequently disparage the native cultures with which they come into contact and conflict, with many scenes demonstrating their propensity to castigate others for traits they themselves evince. Deepening this trope of cultural projection, Baum also depicts the Boy Fortune Hunters denigrating the type of homosocial relationships and communities that they themselves embrace. Each of the series’ novels ends with the rejection of heteronormative romance, thus imbuing them with a queer subtext that fractures the binaries of cultural identity the boys otherwise uphold. From these converging perspectives, Baum establishes American boyhood and adventuring as inherently queer experiences.
