Abstract:
Two different types of rhizomorphs were produced by A. luteobubalina in vitro conditions - aerial and submerged. They differed in growth rate, amount of mucilage, extent of peripheral hyphae, degree of pigmentation and in the structure of inner cortex. Otherwise they had a similar internal structure comprising 4 radial zones, namely, peripheral hyphae, outer cortex, inner cortex and medulla. Two membrane permeant symplastic fluorescent tracers, carboxy-DFFDA and CMAC which ultimately sequestered in vacuoles, behaved in a similar fashion in aerial and submerged rhizomorphs regardless of whether pigment was present in the outer cortical cell walls or in the extracellular material. Rhizomorphs appeared to be mostly impermeable to these probes with exception of a few fluorescent patches that potentially connected peripheral hyphae to inner cortical cells. In contrast, the apoplastic tracer HPTS which was applied to fresh material and its localisation determined in semi-thin (dry) sections following anhydrous freeze substitution appeared to be impeded by the pigmentation in cell walls and/or the extracellular material in the outer cortical zone. Structures identified as air pores arose directly from the mycelium and grew upwards into the air. A cluster of rhizomorph apices is initiated immediately beneath the air pores. As air pores elongated they differentiated into a cylindrical structure. Mature air pores became pigmented as did also the surface mycelium of the colony. The pigmented surface layer extended into the base of air pores, where it was elevated into a mound by tissue inside the base of the air pore. Beneath the pigmented surface layer there was a region of loose hyphae with extensive gas space between them. This gas space extended into the base of the air pore and was continuous with the central gas canal of rhizomorphs. Oxygen is conducted through the air pores and their associated rhizomorph gas canals into the oxygen electrode chamber with a conductivity averaging 679??68x10-12 m3s-1. The time averaged oxygen concentration data from the oxygen electrode chamber were used to compare three different air pore diffusion models. It was found that the widely used pseudo-steady-state model overestimated the oxygen conductivity. Finally, a model developed on the basis of fundamental transport equations was used to calculate oxygen diffusivities. This model gave a better comparison with the experimental data.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at improving the efficiency, robustness, and flexibility of airport operations through intelligent gate assignment. Traditional research on gate assignment focuses on the accommodation of passengers' demands such as walking time of passengers, and the robustness of gate assignment. In spite of its importance on the ramp operations, there is a lack of research to account ramp congestion when gates are assigned. Therefore, this dissertation proposes a new perspective on the gate assignment that accounts for ramp congestion. For that purpose, a ramp operations model based on observations at Atlanta airport is presented to understand the characteristics of aircraft movement on the ramp. The proposed gate assignment problem minimizes passenger-time spent on ramp areas. In addition, this dissertation is conducted to satisfy the needs of passengers, aircraft, and operations from the perspectives of passengers. Using actual passenger data at a major hub airport, the proposed gate assignment is assessed by means of passengers' transit time, passengers' time spent on the ramp, and passengers' waiting time for a gate. Results show that the proposed gate assignment outperforms the current gate assignment in every metric. This dissertation also analyzes the impact of gate assignment on departure metering, which controls the number of pushbacks in order to reduce airport congestion. Then, some of departing flights are held at gates, so it increases the chance of gate conflict, which reduces the efficiency of departure metering as well as ramp operations. In order to analyze the impact of gate assignment on departure metering, this dissertation simulates departure processes at two airports. Results show that the proposed robust gate assignment reduces the occurrence of gate conflicts under departure metering and helps to utilize gate-holding times to some extent.

Abstract:
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Oman, has undertaken massive construction projects to develop its airports. Such development has taken place over a very short span of time and has involved particularly heavy investments. These projects were, and still are, funded by the governments. The financial return of these projects was not their prime objective, but they were implemented to satisfy the air transport demand and to gain prestige. Some of these projects were a success and some were not, due to a lack of proper and efficient planning and implementation. One could say that this is a natural situation considering the very short time frame in which they were completed after the independence of the GCC in the early 1970s coupled with the good financial situation of these countries. However, this situation will not continue forever; indeed, many of these countries have reviewed their implementation of projects, including airport development plans, positively. Nevertheless, there is a lack of strategic planning practices in many GCC airports, where an airport master plan (AMP) is used in isolation without a strategic plan. Generally, airport projects have not received adequate attention in terms of research on project implementation or strategic planning. Such projects cannot be considered as normal projects, as airports are unique, complicated and demanding due to their complexity, security and safety requirements, international regulations, operations, high cost and high versatility. Therefore, it is essential for any airport to introduce and implement a strategic plan before the enacting development plans to minimise the risk of failure. The competitive environment between the GCC members and the demand for ground and air transportation are factors that led airport management to implement new strategic policies and identify the way forward. This research explains the theory of strategic management and relates it to airports and the airport industry. It also uses Bahrain International Airport as a case study. The case study included the collection of qualitative data through interviews with airport authorities and companies. The collected data were applied to business tools. The new management, the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), has created a plan for the implementation of a strategic plan, and the research found that strategic planning has been initiated at Bahrain International Airport (BIA) but that there are differences between its implementation and the general strategic planning theories. BIA has very special characteristics and is unique in terms of its patterns of traffic and geographical location. These should be considered to be success factors and must be used to compete with other airports and enable BIA to be one of the leading airports in the provision of effective and quality services.

Abstract:
The following thesis deals with three current legal issues regarding airports.
In the first chapter the development of airport ownership and management structures will be studied. Although in most cases airports are still owned and managed by governments or local bodies, since the 1960s, new approaches to ownership and management have come into practise. This phenomenon is studied from the perspective of its impact upon public air law.
The second chapter deals with airport charges and their international legal framework. After examining the different forms of airport charges and the recommendations enacted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the author will be led to the conclusion that the current legal regime is unsatisfactory and that the most appropriate solution to this would be to incorporate the principles formulated by ICAO in an Annex to the Chicago Convention.
The third and final chapter is devoted to the study of a legal dispute between Switzerland and Germany with respect to the approach paths to Zurich airport through German airspace. It is concluded that the unilateral legal measures taken by the German government are, with one exception, in conformity with international law.

ABSTRACT Based on a new conception of airports, and recognizing the airport's preeminent role in strengthening a region's economy, this thesis centers on the positive and negative aspects of privatizing international airports. The core case study for the investigation is Eldorado International Airport, serving the city of Bogotá and port of entrance to the South American continent. It concludes that privatization of international airports has grown to be the best means by which large-scale aviation infrastructure projects are to be realized if airports are to not only attend rising traffic demand, but also as private enterprises that deliver users quality air transport services, and focal points of regional and national development facilitating a country's competition in world markets. In the case of Colombia, considerations and recommendations on specific matters that deserve special attention for the correct development of concession contracts are also indicated throughout the text.
RÉSUMÉ Sur la base d'une nouvelle conception de l'aéroport, et tout en lui reconnaissant un rôle prépondérant dans l'économie de la région qu'il dessert, l'auteur examine les aspects positifs et négatifs de la privatisation des aéroports internationaux. L'étude de cas porte sur l'Aéroport international Eldorado qui dessert la ville de Bogotá et sert de port d'entrée du continent sud-américain. L'auteur conclut que la privatisation est le meilleur moyen de réaliser les projets d'infrastructure aéronautique à grande échelle. La privatisation permet aux aéroports de répondre aux exigences du trafic sans cesse croissant, d'offrir un service de qualité aux utilisateurs et de servir de point de mire dans les projets de développement régional et national conçus pour permettre aux pays de faire face à la concurrence mondiale. Dans le cas de la Colombie, l'auteur formule des recommandations spécifiques en vue de favoriser le bon développement des contrats de concession.

Abstract:
Although Brazilian civil aviation regulations allow deviations in the standards and recommended practices (SARPs) with respect to infrastructure, considering they are proven to be within an acceptable level of risk, it does not specify a given methodology for risk analysis. The objective of this work is to structure a risk assessment process for Brazilian airports, which contain nonconformities with respect to the runway end safety areas (RESA) and runway strips. The following steps are implemented in this research: (1) survey of existing non-conformities; (2) identification of potential hazardous scenarios; (3) quantification of risk; and (4) suggestion of mitigating actions to reduce risk. For this study, São Paulo/Congonhas Airport is taken as a case study due to its great importance in two aspects: it is one of the major Brazilian airports for domestic passenger traffic and it presents a large number of nonconformities in its infrastructure which may compromise safety. The study evaluates operations'; safety for a one-year period, involving more than 160,000 movements, and it shows that the airport operates most of the time with high probabilities of an incident/accident occurrence. Also, as part of the risk assessment process, the study suggests and quantifies the gains for mitigating alternatives for lowering the risks such as the use of Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS), redefining runway';s layout and restraining certain categories of aircraft from operating on the airport.

This paper examines the interaction among airport aeronautical charge, traffic volume, and car rental service charge by employing a cross-section dataset covering 337 airports in the United States. Other determinants of the aeronautical charge are also examined. Using the method of three stage least squares, the main empirical findings are: (1) Car rental price has no significant impact on passenger volume, indicating that rental cost, which is an important cost category of airport concessional goods, does not affect passenger volume of airport. (2) Car rental price has no significant effect on aeronautical charge. (3) Only rental price at airports with a very low transfer rate responds positively to passenger volume. Overall, rental price does not respond to passenger volume or aeronautical charge. (4) Aeronautical charge has a significant negative effect on passenger volume, but it has no significant effect on car rental price.

Recently ranked Skytrax 5-Star Airport, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is well known for its extensive airline networks and quality supporting services. This paper is to evaluate the performance of HKIA as a leading regional aviation hub when encountering the keen competition of four other major airports in Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) region; all of which are within a radial distance of 100km of one another. An in-depth comparative analysis for the five GPRD airports is carried out with the application of the Aviation Hub Model and the Airport Competitiveness Index. Together with the review of the development of hub-and-spoke operation strategies, the worldwide air freedom liberalization as well as the national and regional policies, the study highlights the implications and significance drawn from the analysis upon the HKIA and four other GPRD airports. A series of feasible recommendations will be provided on the future development of their positioning and functions.

With the growing demand for air transportation and limited capacity at major airports, there is a need to increase the capacity of airport systems at the metropolitan area level. The increased use of secondary airports has been and is expected to be one of the key mechanisms by which future demand is met in congested metropolitan areas. This thesis provides an analysis of the factors influencing the emergence of secondary airports and the dynamics of multi-airport systems. The congestion of the core airport, the distribution of population at the regional level, the existence and the proximity of a secondary basin of population close to secondary airports were identified as major factors. Ground access and airport infrastructure, the low level of connecting passengers at the core airport were also identified as a contributing factors. The entry of an air carrier -generally a low-cost carrier- was determined to be an essential stimulus in the emergence phenomenon impacting fares and airport competition levels resulting in market stimulation. But the emergence of secondary airports imposes new constraints that need to be taken into account in the national air transportation system improvements. By providing an identification of the factors that influence the emergence of secondary airports and an understanding of the dynamics of regional airport systems this research provides useful support for the planning and the future development of multi-airport systems.

Abstract:
The purpose was to evaluate airport impact on nearby residential property values (RPV). The hypothesis was that a relationship between noise levels, and nearby RPV could be identified and quantified. The objective was to model a relationship between housing location with respect to an airport and housing value, taking into consideration other relevant factors. Evaluation of aviation facilities impact on RPV was based on a sample of 587 single-family houses sold during 1984 and 1985. Selling price was used as the dependent variable. Independent variables included physical characteristics of a house, distance to the closest airport, accessibility of a house to the urban area, and supply and demand for houses. Distance to nearest airport was used as a surrogate for aircraft noise level. Study indicated that impact of aviation facilities on RPV could be quantified using selling price of a house as the dependent variable and distance from an airport as a primary independent variable along with physical characteristics of a house. Effect of an airport on RPV appears dependent not only on distance, but also on type of airport and selling price of a house. Davis-Monthan Airport (DM), a military airport, has a significantly greater impact than Tucson International Airport (TIA), a commercial airport. DM impact was greatest on houses priced above sample median. However, lower priced houses were effected more when the impact was expressed as a percent of selling price. DM impact area was approximately 2 miles from the airport, while TIA impact was about 1 mile from the facility. Distance from DM was the most significant variable in describing variation in selling price for houses closest to this facility. Living area of a house was also a very significant variable. Distance to TIA was not very significant in evaluating selling price variation. Living area and age of a house were generally the most significant variables describing selling price variation for TIA subset.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The demand in air travel is continuously increasing. In order to handle this increase in demand, airports need to physically expand or the management of the airports needs to improve. When the demand at OR Tambo International Airport gets too high, more passengers will need to travel to Lanseria International Airport, which will therefore need to be expanded. The study was done in collaboration with Virtual Consulting Engineers, who decided that the concept of Atlanta International Airport in Georgia, USA, which is ranked the busiest airport in the world, will be used in this expansion. The aim of the study was to minimise passenger walking distances and waiting times at Lanseria International Airport. This was done by comparing di erent airport apron layouts, using simulation, and improving the aircraft gate assignment, using the cross-entropy method. Four di erent designs of airport layouts, all based on that of Atlanta International Airport, were compared in the study. A model of each was developed using simulation. The performance measures used to compare the designs included 1) the average walking distance of arriving and departing passengers at the airport, 2) the average time spent at the airport by arriving and departing passengers, 3) the average distance travelled by aircraft at the airport, 4) the average time by which each aircraft is delayed and 5) the average number of aircraft present at the airport. The walking distance of arriving and departing passengers was largely a ected by the way in which ights were assigned to gates. The gates at the airport are of three di erent sizes: small, medium and large. Small aircraft can park at any of the gates, while medium aircraft can only park at medium or large gates and large aircraft can only park at large gates. Three rules for the ight-to-gate assignment process were developed. In the rst two rules an arriving ight was assigned to the available, suitable gate closest to the terminal building. The constraint that small aircraft cannot be assigned to medium or large gates if there are small gates available and that medium aircraft cannot be assigned to large gates if there are medium gates available, was used in Rule 1 and not in Rule 2. In the third rule, metaheuristic optimisation was used to determine a ight-to-gate assignment schedule with the objective of minimising the passenger walking distances. This metaheuristic optimisation was performed in real-time and was thus repeated every time a delay occurred at the airport. The background of airports, simulation, metaheuristics and relevant case studies were investigated in the literature review. The simulation and metaheuristic optimisation models were then developed. The results identi ed the best of the four designs that were compared. It was also concluded that the use of metaheuristic optimisation, using the cross-entropy method, results in a reduction in passenger walking distances at the airport.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die aantal lugpassasiers neem aanhoudend toe en om in staat te wees om hierdie toename in vraag te hanteer moet lughawens sies uitbrei of die bestuur van die lughawens moet verbeter. Wanneer die vraag by OR Tambo Internasionale Lughawe te hoog raak, gaan meer mense na Lanseria Internasionale Lughawe moet reis. Die lughawe sal dan dus moet uitbrei. Die studie is in samewerking met Virtual Consulting Engineers gedoen. Drie reels waarvolgens vliegtuie aan hekke toegeken kan word is ontwikkel. In die eerste twee reels word 'n vliegtuig wat aankom aan die beskikbare hek naaste aan die terminaal gebou toegeken as die hek geskik is vir die vliegtuig. In die eerste reel is die beperking dat klein vliegtuie nie aan medium en groot hekke toegeken mag word as daar klein hekke beskikbaar is nie en dat medium vliegtuie nie aan groot hekke toegeken mag word as daar medium hekke beskikbaar is nie, ingesluit. Hierdie beperking is nie in die tweede reel ingesluit nie. In die derde reel is metaheuristiek optimering gebruik om vliegtuie aan hekke toe te ken. Die doelwit van die metaheuristiek optimering was om die loopafstand van die passasiers te verminder. Elke keer as 'n vliegtuig op die lughawe vertraag was, is die optimering proses is herhaal. Die agtergrond van lughawens, simulasie, metaheuristieke en gevalle studies is bestudeer in die literatuur studie. Daarna is die simulasie en metaheuristiek optimering modelle ontwikkel. Die resultate van die studie het aangedui watter een van die vier lughawe ontwerpe die beste is. Dit is ook beslis dat die gebruik van metaheuristiek optimering, en spesifi ek die "cross-entropy" metode, die loopafstand van passasiers op die lughawe verminder.

This study focused on the role of Facilities Management (FM) in improving safety and security at the airport and the link between FM and design, so the greatest attention was paid to the safe and secure management of the facilities rather than customers or passengers. Data collection centred on the management and staff of the case study airport and experts in the field of facilities management and aviation with a focus upon safety and security. The study initially concentrated on the role of Facilities Management (FM) at the design stage and the implications for the management at the operations stage but later the research focus shifted to the role of FM in the management of the airport, in particular airport safety and security. In studying airports, all areas of the aerodrome and the facilities used by the airport and aircraft formed the central focus of the study. Off airport installations such as fuel depot, power station, aircraft waste facility were referred to where necessary when they impaired upon safety procedures. The philosophy of performance measurement was also a key focus of the research study; this study differs from previous studies, as it concentrates on looking at how FM impacts upon airport performance in relation to safety and security. The rationale behind the focus on Scottish airports was the logistics to accessing key people at each airport and collecting relevant data in conjunction with the belief that to some extent operating procedures will be similar across the world in terms of the security and safety function. A more international perspective is perhaps an additional research activity for the future and was outside the scope of the current project. The methodology for this study is a case study of three Scottish airports, which are owned and operated by the BAA Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen international airports). Data was also collected from Civil Aviation Agency, analysed and presented in this study. Evidence in this thesis supports the conclusion that planning for airport safety and security is airport specific because no two airports are exactly the same; they differ in sizes, mode of operations, passenger type and flight destinations. In addition this is the very first survey that developed and tested a list of potential KPIs for airport safety and security, which forms part of the researchers’ original contribution to knowledge.

The anticipated increase in competition among airports means that there is now a greater need for strategic thinking in the airport business industry. In order to succeed, airport management will have to implement new strategic initiatives and identify their key competitive strengths. While many airports are now more active in following strategic directions, there is some deficiency and inconsistency in the literature in this regard. This research relates the theories of strategic management to the case of airports in order to explore the issue of whether the airport business industry is able to apply the different strategies adopted by other industries in order to achieve growth. The research provides an in-depth analysis into the strategies that Dubai International Airport has pursued. This carefully selected case study involves the collection of qualitative data through conducting semi-structured interviews as a primary source of information. Data collected are applied to different well-known business tools including the PESTEL Analysis, the Five Forces Model and the Resource-based View (RBV) of the firm. The research found that there are some strategic differences between the airport industry and other industries. While it is possible for airports to adopt certain strategies, some strategic theories are not very practicable for airports. While Dubai International Airport is not considered very different from other airports, there are some differentiated characteristics in its ownership and management that led it to outperform its rivals. The research proposes that there are a number of key success factors derived from four core areas that led Dubai International Airport to obtain strategic strengths over other airports. These four areas include: General Condition, Competitive Situation, Resource Acquisition and Strategic Direction. These areas are also classified as No Control, Least Control, Some Control and Most Control, respectively. This thesis contributes to the development of a best practice conceptual model that can help airport managers understand and improve their key competitive strengths and success factors.

The megaregion spatial form has grown in prominence in recent years in planning thought, but the relationship between megaregions and the aviation sector is rather untouched in research. The purpose of this study is to examine the role airports play as transportation hubs for megaregions, and how the megaregions are connected through air traffic. Comparing the megaregions involved an empirical study using attribute data about the megaregions and the flows between them. The infrastructure in the megaregions was compared by density and type of airports, including an examination into airline hubs. The connectivity between megaregions, non-megaregion areas, and the international market was analyzed employing T-100 data, separating the analysis for the passenger and freight sectors. The top flows in the country were examined, along with the relationships each megaregion has individually, and particularly their internal flows. Megaregions are much more active in air travel than non-megaregion areas due to a larger presence of airline hubs and greater infrastructure. The international component of the passenger and freight sectors is growing the fastest in relation to megaregions, but only for the freight sector is this the largest component. The largest component of the passenger sector is the flows between megaregions. Flows within megaregions for the passenger sector are growing slowly and are declining in the freight sector, but short-haul air traffic continues to be the cause of congestion. The megaregion is a suitable level to manage infrastructure investment to better prepare the regions for the coming growth. A megaregion-level institution is best suited to managing the issues which must be faced by the numerous jurisdictions.

Since the first flights in Sydney in 1910, the problem of exactly where to locate Sydney's airport has preoccupied and troubled planners, politicians and residents of the city. This thesis examines Sydney airport as a space, site and symbol under contestation by major social forces - Zukin - throughout the twentieth century. In doing so, it seeks to question the claims of both planners and anti-airport protestors to resolve and manage large-scale urban developments. Via a series of case studies of representations of the airport, the thesis develops an argument for understanding the airport as a heterotopia: neither sublime nor abject, but through such an extremist spatial imaginary pointing to the production of modernist space as a highly contested process. Because it localises and materialises discourses on the nature and goals of progress,internationalisation and globalisation, it is argued that the built form of the airport is, and will continue to be, a key site of such aerial modernity. The final chapter closely reads a series of airport tales- (a film, a play and a park) in order to consider the ways in which they rework the modernist sublime in domestic space.It is concluded that these stories offer a method of representing locality that goes beyond the existing understandings of locality as an essence of place. The appeal of the narratives lies in the shift that they develop, through excessive and negotiated representations of both the domestic and the sublime, from the local as essence, to locality as practice.

Ever since the airport was conceived as a permanent building type, airport designers have debated what identity an airport should embody. As a threshold of first impressions, the airport should not only introduce the visitor to the local environment but also represent the identity of a country. The aim of this thesis project is to design an airport terminal that reflects the natural and cultural environments of the islands of the Bahamas. Through its architecture, this building attempts to create an engaging experience for its users: passengers, employees and visitors. Local culture and sense of place are abstracted through architectural ideas, realized in the language of contextual modernism. The synthesis of the themes and concepts explored throughout the design process are presented through drawings and commentary. Precedents such as the Taino cosmos, color and nature, place and culture are used to inspire structural systems, form and aesthetics. The plan of the new airport terminal fulfils the functional program while interpreting the land and sea formations of the Bahama islands; ocean currents and land-sea patterns may be associated with movements of people and machines, converging and diverging within the airport environment.

The island has a richness of natural scenery and cultural events based on strong Hindu's beliefs.All of these unique phenomena attract people from different cultures and nations to visit and be part of these celebrations, as well as to enjoy the warm breeze and palm trees along the beaches.A 1989 Department of Tourism, Post and Telecommunication in Indonesia's Report suggests that the number of tourist coming to private agencies are working together to improve the island'sBali increases as much as 15 percent annually ( 1989 Indonesia Hand Book). To accommodate this development, the Government and infrastructure and build accommodations which range from three to five star international hotels. The other important element that the island needs is to expandthe airport facility to accommodate the fast growing number of international flights that accommodate this.The major goal of this project is to plan and design new airport facilities with emphasis on the new design for the international terminal. This design of the new international terminal building at the Bali International Airport, Indonesia, is an attempt to introduce a new concept of a built form using vernacular architectural concepts as the starting point. The technology required by the functions inherent in the program will be used by the architect to translate these considerations into reality.The design approach for this project is mainly based on the beliefs and order which have been traditionally followed and applied by the people of Bali. However, the intention of this project is not to literally design something which has a form borrowed from the traditional form, but that which is developed beyond the traditional concept and utilized this concept in concert with modern structural engineering and materials. Therefore to ensure the success of a design for this important facility, it is imperative to find the essence and the spirit of the traditional architecture and represent them through a modern built form.

Government ownership of airports is inefficient and has led to large financial deficits in Canada. Terminals I and 11 at Pearson Airport are in desperate need of redevelopment. The Pearson Airport Agreements between the Federal Government and the Pearson Development Corporation ("PDC") to redevelop and operate Terminals I and II at Pearson Airport pursuant to a long term lease would have benefitted the Government through the receipt of the proceeds from the sale of the airports while being relieved of the burden of financing airport expansion. The cancellation of the Pearson Airport Agreements based on the faulty reasoning of the Nixon Report was contrary to the public interest.
The Canadian Government plans to "commercialize" Airports which involves leasing them to Airport Authorities. The federal government has reached an agreement on terms for transfer of Pearson Airport to the Greater Toronto Airport Authority ("GTAA"). Pearson airport will be one of the first airports to be transferred to local control under the Liberal governments Canadian Airport Authority model. Commercialization amounts to a transfer of Airports from one part of the public sector to another. It is plagued by many of the inefficiencies that characterize Government operated Airports.
Pearson Airport has significant market power. Pearson Airports market power can effectively be diffused by separating the airport's airside and groundside functions, and basing airside ownership on slots. Terminals I, II and III will be sold separately and will become the responsibility of several airport companies who will compete for Airlines and Passengers. Runways, taxiways and the apron would be owned and operated by a Corporation made up of investors and third party brokers.

Air freight sector has been a growing market worldwide for many years. The rapid growth of scheduled freight aircraft services in particular has been a remarkable feature of the international airline industry during the past decades. Air freight traffic has grown faster than passenger traffic and the production of goods has become more dependent upon air freight services that link global supply chains together. Air transportation is useful when the goods must be delivered quickly and it also allows for more flexible hub-and-spoke networking structures, which are able to offset some of the problems of indirect flows. The concept of developing regional air-cargo centres can be seen from many different perspectives. The most important factors in airport location selection are connectivity to existing road and rail transport networks and current or potential freight traffic volumes. Right location allows firms to develop their own resources, consolidate their competitive position and nurture their growth. Once the company has located it is hard to relocate, so that is why the location decision has to be made carefully. Purpose: The main purpose of this thesis was to reveal the key factors, either positive or negative, which can affect the decision of air freight operators to relocate their express services to smaller airports.   Methodology: The chosen method for this thesis was the mono method because the data collection technique was qualitative. Based on that interviews, the authors finalized their topic and their research questions and built question lists, one for the Jönköping airport (Axamo), one for the companies that already operate in Jönköping airport and one for companies that do not operate there. The authors decided to have semi-structured interviews with all the interviewees in order to cover the different themes of their research.   Findings: The main findings from analysing the empirical data revealed that there are many different positive and negative factors that can affect the decision making for relocation of freight operators. The most important that were identified concern the airport’s infrastructure, location, quality of provided services, number of passenger flights and price policy. Moreover, the weather conditions at the region, the customers’ demand and connectivity with road and rail networks are also very influential.

Aquesta tesi aborda l'aplicació a la indústria aeroportuària d'enfocaments metodològics alternatius als models convencionals classificats com a mètodes no paramètrics i paramètrics. L'objectiu és estimar i confirmar la coherència de l'eficiència dels aeroports espanyols a través del temps. Per tant, s'utilitzen diversos enfocaments per superar limitacions específiques que les metodologies presenten quan es comparen. Dins de les tècniques no paramètriques s'utilitza l'Anàlisi Envoltant de Dades, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), i com a models paramètrics, l'Anàlisi de Frontera Estocàstica, Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). DEA s'ha utilitzat àmpliament a tot el món en la indústria aeroportuària i alguns estudis fan referència al cas espanyol. No obstant això, els models de DEA convencionals presenten algunes limitacions; per exemple, tendeixen a no incorporar efectes relacionats amb el temps. La literatura mostra la manca d'ús del SFA en estudis empírics. Per tant, aquesta Tesi reflecteix coneixements rellevants de l'aplicació al sistema aeroportuari espanyol. Una qüestió important en relació amb pocs estudis tenint en compte els aeroports espanyols és la falta d'informació financera individual rellevant publicada per AENA. AENA és una empresa governamental que gestiona tots els aeroports espanyols. El grau de centralització de la gestió és fins l’extrem que els gestors dels aeroports no poden decidir polítiques comercials (per exemple, el preu i la qualitat dels serveis prestats). A més, els estudis no qüestionen ni avaluen críticament la fiabilitat de les dades amb respecte si són una representació fidel de com els aeroports operen. Aquesta tesi és una recopilació de capítols (quatre documents d'investigació) i un document en curs. Tots els treballs són empírics amb objectius específics per tal d'analitzar els aeroports des de diferents perspectives, incloent-hi la ubicació geogràfica i l'atractiu turístic. En primer lloc, un dels principals problemes abordats en aquesta tesi és la fiabilitat de les dades aportades per AENA, especialment pel que fa a la inversió (cost de capital). En segon lloc, calcular l'eficiència individual dels aeroports i avaluar la coherència dels aeroports més eficients no només a través del temps, sinó recolzada per l'aplicació dels dos enfocaments metodològics establerts. Recomanacions de gestió i actuacions polítiques són proveïdes per tal de millorar l'eficiència global del sistema aeroportuari espanyol. This Thesis addresses the application to the airport industry of alternative methodological approaches to the conventional models commonly classified as non-parametric and parametric methods. The aim is to estimate and to confirm the consistency of the Spanish airports’ efficiency across time. Therefore, several approaches are used in order to overcome specific limitations that the methodologies present compared to the other. Within the non-parametric techniques Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used and as parametric models, Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA). DEA has been extensively used worldwide in the airport industry and some studies refer to the Spanish case. Nevertheless, the conventional DEA models present some limitations; for example, they tend not to incorporate time related effects. The literature shows a lack of usage of SFA in empirical studies. Therefore, relevant insights are to be learned from the application to the Spanish airport system. One important matter regarding few studies considering the Spanish airports is the lack of individual relevant financial information published by AENA. AENA is a government-owned company and manager of all the Spanish airports. The degree of centralisation of management is to the extent that airports managers cannot decide commercial policies (e.g. price and quality of the services provided). Additionally, the studies neither critically question nor assess the reliability of the data regarding representing a fair and true view of how the airports are performing from an operational perspective. This Thesis is a compilation of chapters (four research papers) and one paper in progress. All the papers are empirical base with specific objectives in order to analyse the airports from different perspectives including the geographical location and the tourism attractiveness. Firstly, one major problem addressed in this Thesis is the reliability of the data provided by AENA, particularly with respect to investment (cost of capital). Secondly, to estimate the individual efficiencies of the airports and to evaluate the consistency of the most efficient airports not only across time, but supported by the application of the two stated methodological approaches. Managerial and policymakers’ recommendations are drawn to improve the overall efficiency of the Spanish airport system. All the papers have been presented in international conferences relevant in the airport and aviation industry and also in methodological conferences. With the exception of the fifth paper (ongoing work), all the papers have been sent to refereed journals (peer review) cited at the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and they are currently under review. Some extractions have been published as case studies and dissemination articles (The Public Sphere Journal of Public Policy, February 2017; Inside O.R., March 2018)

Such control can adjust the indoor environment systems setpoints to satisfy comfort during occupancy or when unoccupied, initiate energy conservation setpoints and if necessary, shut down part of the building systems. Adjusting energy control setpoints manually in large commercial buildings can be a nightmare for facility managers. Incidentally for such buildings, occupancy based control strategies are not achieved through the use of conventional controllers alone. This research, therefore, investigated the potential of using a high-level control system in airport terminal building. The study presents the evolution of a novel fuzzy rule-based supervisory controller, which intelligently establishes comfort setpoints based on flow of passenger through the airport as well as variable external environmental conditions. The inputs to the supervisory controller include: the time schedule of the arriving and departing passenger planes; the expected number of passengers; zone daylight illuminance levels; and external temperature. The outputs from the supervisory controller are the low-level controllers internal setpoint profile for thermal comfort, visual comfort and indoor air quality. Specifically, this thesis makes contribution to knowledge in the following ways: It utilised artificial intelligence to develop a novel fuzzy rule-based, energy-saving supervisory controller that is able to establish acceptable indoor environmental quality for airport terminals based on occupancy schedules and ambient conditions. It presents a unique methodology of designing a supervisory controller using expert knowledge of an airport s indoor environment systems through MATLAB/Simulink platform with the controller s performance evaluated in both MATLAB and EnergyPlus simulation engine. Using energy conservation strategies (setbacks and switch-offs), the pro-posed supervisory control system was shown to be capable of reducing the energy consumed in the Manchester Airport terminal building by up to 40-50% in winter and by 21-27% in summer. It demonstrates that if a 45 minutes passenger processing time is aimed for instead of the 60 minutes standard time suggested by ICAO, energy consumption is significantly reduced (with less carbon emission) in winter particularly. The potential of the fuzzy rule-based supervisory controller to optimise comfort with minimal energy based on variation in occupancy and external conditions was demonstrated through this research. The systematic approach adopted, including the use of artificial intelligence to design supervisory controllers, can be extended to other large buildings which have variable but predictable occupancy patterns.

Much research has been undertaken to gain insight into business alignment of IT. This alignment basically aims to improve a firm’s performance by an improved harmonization of the business function and the IT function within a firm. The thesis discusses previous approaches and constructs an overall framework, which a potential approach needs to fit in. Being in a highly regulated industry, for airports there is little space left to increase revenues. However, the retailing business has proven to be an area that may contribute towards higher income for airport operators. Consequently, airport management should focus on supporting this business segment. Nevertheless, it needs to be taken into account that smooth airport operations are a precondition for successful retailing business at an airport. Applying the concept of information intensity, the processes of gate allocation and airport retailing have been determined to appraise the potential that may be realized upon (improved) synchronization of the two. It has been found that the lever is largest in the planning phase (i.e. prior to operations), and thus support by means of information technology (for information distribution and improved planning) may help to enable an improved overall retail performance. In order to determine potential variables, which might influence the output, a process decomposition has been conducted along with the development of an appropriate information model. The derived research model has been tested in different scenarios. For this purpose an adequate gate allocation algorithm has been developed and implemented in a purposewritten piece of software. To calibrate the model, actual data (several hundred thousand data items from Frankfurt Airport) from two flight plan seasons has been used. Key findings: The results show that under the conditions described it seems feasible to increase retail sales in the magnitude of 9% to 21%. The most influential factors (besides the constraining rule set and a retail area’s specific performance) proved to be a flight’s minimum and maximum time at a gate as well as its buffer time at gate. However, as some of the preconditions may not be accepted by airport management or national regulators, the results may be taken as an indication for cost incurred, in case the suggested approach is not considered. The transferability to other airport business models and limitations of the research approach are discussed at the end along with suggestions for future areas of research.

Die Dissertation analysiert die Bewegungen in der Luft auf ihre stets lokalen und immanent territorialen Dimensionen – und widerlegt so den vermeintlichen und häufig wiederholten Anspruch an den Luftverkehr, er sei das globale, raumvernichtende Verkehrssystem par excellence (Carl Schmitt, Paul Virilio, Martin Heidegger). This dissertation develops a specific geopolitics of aviation, taking an original perspective as it starts with the assumption that air travel happens on the ground. The focus is on a thorough examination of the technical details for implementing the facilities of airports at moments decisive for the distribution of power in the 20th century. Geopolitical discourses are revised to enable an original understanding for the genealogy of globalisation. The dissertation analyses movements in the air with view on their immanent local and territorial dimensions. It breaks with the overcome understanding of aviation as a traffic system that is global and that destroys space as no other (Carl Schmitt, Paul Virilio, Martin Heidegger). The dissertation was disputed at the Institute for Cultural Studies. It is also a contribution to the genealogy of media theory, following in the footsteps of Harold A. Innis, as it focuses on the neglected transmission of goods and people instead of signs and codes. Starting point is the US military logistics in World War II. The heterogeneous material under review includes political programmes and debates; international relations; philosophical, juridical and economic discourses; urbanism, engineering and military doctrines. It takes the reader on a journey around the world, with focus on Saudi-Arabia, Central and Southern Africa, Brazil and the Near East, taking into account events from the 1930s to 1970s, and concluding with an epilogue on the events of 9/11.

Background: The ongoing global pandemic has brought the aviation industry to its knees. The dramatic decline of passenger numbers is particularly noticeable at airports, such as Frankfurt Airport. Going from a new all-time record of 70,5 million passengers in 2019 to passenger numbers that were lastly reported in 1984, the airport has to re-evaluate the current servicescape to adapt to the new normal. With technologies being an integral feature of today’s society, airports and other service providers increasingly emphasize the use of technologies to enhance the customer experience.   Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of how technologies in the airport servicescape impact and reshape the customer experience during the pandemic age.   Method: An exploratory sequential mixed methods research based on a single case study was conducted to fulfill the purpose of this research. The qualitative data was collected through 13 semi structured online interviews aiming to explore how passengers perceive the airport servicescape and the influence of technologies during the pandemic age. Based on the themes and codes generated from the qualitative findings, as well as from previous literature, a theoretical framework was developed. With the help of this framework, the quantitative instrument (online survey) was developed aiming to explore if and which specific attributes of technologies impact and reshape the customer experience at Frankfurt Airport during Covid-19.   Conclusion: All technologies available at Frankfurt Airport were perceived as positive during Covid-19. Especially speed and convenience (easy usability) were the most striking technology-specific attributes for the overall customer experience at the airport. Yet, due to the decreased airport traffic and reduced personnel, the currently changed airport servicescape had an influence on the favorable technology perception and resulting customer experience. Thus, the customer experience was not solely impacted and reshaped by the technologies, but rather co-created by an interplay of technologies, employees, and safety measurements at the airport.

Abstract:
Airlines have endured a prolonged period of intense competition with the advent of deregulation in 1978. Market innovations and price-cutting dramatically expanded the number of travelers utilizing the national air transportation network. Bankruptcies and mergers reduced the number of contestants in the industry and eventually produced four national carriers controlling 80-85 percent of the passengers and routes. This new market power of the dominant airlines is resulting in industry changes designed to reduce operational uncertainty but is also having detrimental effects on many airports, particularly the smallest airports. This study employs qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the viability of the nation’s smallest primary commercial service airports. Three journal articles are fused in examining different aspects of the viability question. In Article 1, a longitudinal comparative analysis presents historic growth patterns for various sized airports during deregulation and reveals a distinctly lower growth rate for nonhub airports than their larger rivals. Even with a burgeoning market for travelers, growth for nonhub airports was anemic and the industry experienced massive passenger migration to the 60 largest airports. Article 2 addresses the topic of consumer switching, expands on extant literature with qualitative analyses, and proposes a theoretic, conceptual framework of four primary types of traveler purchasers. Each traveler type has its own distinct switching rationale and creates leakage patterns contoured to the features of their preferred airport. Building on the migration and switching findings of the first two articles, Article 3 explores converging market conditions and factors that are threatening future airline service for dozens of the smallest airports. By extracting findings from contemporary research, a comparative analysis of airports identifies 33 airports that face the highest risk of losing air service. The explanatory model places the airports in rank order by weighting various threat criteria. Qualitative interviews of air service professionals offer insider observations generally not known to the public, confirm observations found in existing research and verify that market forces are acting to reduce the number of airports in the network. The key contribution of the three articles of the thesis is its description of how key actors (firms, customers, agencies) interact and respond to policy decisions that have unintended consequences to small airports and their regional economies. There are predictable patterns in the relational linkages of these actors that contribute to our understanding of how a particular industry evolves under various pressures and how it interacts with factors outside the industry. The preponderance of the evidence from this study reveals that current market trends are generally caustic to the continued operation of small airports. Industry experts are reticent in acknowledging that the next phase of deregulation is underway with the consolidation of the nation’s nonhub airports.
