Abstract:
The Aircraft Maintenance Intuitive Troubleshooting (AMIT) project was a 3 year endeavor sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Logistics Readiness Branch. The project's goal was to develop a Job Performance Aid (JPA) that Air Force maintenance technicians could use at the aircraft, regardless of experience level, and realize improved technician performance. This paper describes the AMIT Field Demonstration Test (FDT) and subsequent Cost Analysis (CA). The FDT demonstrated that using the AMIT JPA could reduce repair times by 41 to 50 minutes. Also, performance of novice specialists using AMIT approached or exceeded that of expert specialists using current methods. The CA, applying the FDT results to fleet-wide F-16 Block 40/42 maintenance data, revealed a potential savings of over 47,000 labor hours annually in repair time, translating roughly into $3,000,000 in labor costs. Similar savings are likely across additional airframes pending development and implementation of the AMIT solution.

Abstract:
Aircraft panel maintenance is typically based on scheduled inspections during which the panel damage size is compared to a repair threshold value, set to ensure a desirable reliability for the entire fleet. This policy is very conservative since it does not consider that damage size evolution can be very different on different panels, due to material variability and other factors. With the progress of sensor technology, data acquisition and storage techniques, and data processing algorithms, structural health monitoring systems are increasingly being considered by the aviation industry. Aiming at reducing the conservativeness of the current maintenance approaches, and, thus, at reducing the maintenance cost, we employ a model-based prognostics method developed in a previous work to predict the future damage growth of each aircraft panel. This allows deciding whether a given panel should be repaired considering the prediction of the future evolution of its damage, rather than its current health state. Two predictive maintenance strategies based on the developed prognostic model are proposed in this work and applied to fatigue damage propagation in fuselage panels. The parameters of the damage growth model are assumed to be unknown and the information on damage evolution is provided by noisy structural health monitoring measurements. We propose a numerical case study where the maintenance process of an entire fleet of aircraft is simulated, considering the variability of damage model parameters among the panel population as well as the uncertainty of pressure differential during the damage propagation process. The proposed predictive maintenance strategies are compared to other maintenance strategies using a cost model. The results show that the proposed predictive maintenance strategies significantly reduce the unnecessary repair interventions, and, thus, they lead to major cost savings.

In its development, the school management has always carried out efforts to improve the competence of maintenance teachers in the Airframe Powerplant major through training, visits, and other forms, but other forms of additional programs are still needed. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide training in carrying out repairs to sheet metal under airframe manufacturing standards as well as competence in the field of airframe maintenance required. The implementation of the community service chosen is a form of training, both theory and practice for competency in repairing sheet metal in aircraft. Implementation of online training through zoom and hands-on practice. Implementing sheet metal repair introduction training for teachers, it can increase the competence of teachers who have an undergraduate education background so that it helps in the teaching and learning process at the Kartika Aqasa Bhakti Aviation Vocational School Kegiatan pelatihan ini dilatarbelakangi oleh masih rendahnya jumlah dan kompetensi guru bidang produktif sekolah menengah kejuruan, khususnya bidang produktif SMK penerbangan. Dalam perkembangannya, manajemen sekolah selalu melaksanakan upaya – upaya untuk meningkatkan kompetensi keahlian guru bidang maintenance pada jurusan Airframe Powerplant melalui pelatihan – pelatihan, kunjungan dan bentuk lain tetapi masih diperlukan bentuk program tambahan lain. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam bentuk pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan kompetensi dalam melakukan repair pada sheet metal sesuai dengan standar manufacture airframe. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakt ini melalui pelahitan on site baik teori maupun praktek hands on. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam bentuk pelatihan dasar sheet metal repair adalah para guru-guru bidang produuktif memiliki kompetensi dalam melaksanakan sheet metal repair sehingga meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran siswa bidang airframe.

Abstract:
In the context of the predicted growth in air transportation, the additional attention will be paid to the organization of the competitive maintenance and repair operations for the commercial airplanes. The implementation of new technological processes for airframe repairs and the application of modern information technologies during the development of the repair procedures can be a significant advantage in the expanding market of post-production support of the commercial air fleet. Airframe adhesive repairs allow using lifting abilities of the materials more intensively, but application of the adhesive joints technology requires more complicated strength calculation procedure. It is advisable to utilize the modern finite element software packages to perform the reliable calculation. The capabilities of these software packages allow obtaining adequate computational results for adhesive repair joint parameters subjected to cyclic loads. This paper is concentrated on application of the finite element methods to simulate the crack growth in isotropic material and on methods for accelerated calculation of the mechanical response of cracked structures. Crack growth simulation is performed based on XFEM methods where the created finite element model is complemented with asymptotic imitation function of crack tip and with discontinuous jump function across the crack surfaces. Fatigue properties of the repair joint are modelled in accordance with direct cyclic approach, where a Fourier series approximation with time integration of the nonlinear material behavior is applied. After that, the result of integration at each point of the load history is used for the prediction of the material fatigue properties degradation at the next step of computation; this allows us to evaluate the material damage growth rate. Based on calculation results, a conclusion was made that the received numerical data match the full-scale test results; the time spent for calculation with the usage of accelerated computational methods was evaluated.

The new progressive smart technologies announced in the fourth industrial revolution in aviation—Aviation 4.0—represent new possibilities and big challenges in aircraft maintenance processes. The main benefit of these technologies is the possibility to monitor, transfer, store, and analyze huge datasets. Based on analysis outputs, there is a possibility to improve current preventive maintenance processes and implement predictive maintenance processes. These solutions lower the downtime, save manpower, and extend the components’ lifetime; thus, the maximum effectivity and safety is achieved. The article deals with the possible implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with an infrared camera and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) as two of the smart hangar technologies for airframe condition monitoring. The presented implementations of smart technologies follow up the specific results of a case study focused on trainer aircraft failure monitoring and its impact on maintenance strategy changes. The case study failure indexes show the critical parts of aircraft that are subjected to damage the most. The aim of the article was to justify the need for thorough monitoring of critical parts of the aircraft and then analyze and propose a more effective and the most suitable form of technical condition monitoring of aircraft critical parts. The article describes the whole process of visual inspection performed by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with an IR camera and its related processes; in addition, it covers the possible usage of RFID tags as a labeling tool supporting the visual inspection. The implementations criteria apply to the repair and overhaul small aircraft maintenance organization, and later, it can also increase operational efficiency. The final suggestions describe the possible usage of proposed solutions, their main benefits, and also the limitations of their implementations in maintenance of trainer aircraft.

This paper outlined the experimental and theoretical study on the TC4 alloy fasten holes structure to assess the first inspection and maintenance period for structures. The initial fatigue quality of the fastener holes was represented by an equivalent initial flaw size distribution. Based on the experimental results of crack size, the life of fasten structure detail in which 5% crack happened was provided and the resulted life was suggested as the structure economical life. The predicated economical life of titanium alloy fasten hole structure are helpful to the economical repair of the airframe structure.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the emphasis in aircraft maintenance has been on developing online structural health monitoring systems to replace conventional non destructive inspection techniques which require considerable down-time, human effort and cost. Vibration based damage detection is one of the most promising techniques for implementation in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). In vibration based methods, the presence of damage is detected by monitoring changes in one of the dynamic parameters of the structure, resonant frequencies, modeshapes or damping characteristics. Compared to modeshape based methods, frequency based methods have the advantage that measurements need to be taken only at a single location. Previous developments on frequency based techniques have relied on Finite Element Model updating; analytical techniques have hitherto been restricted to beams due to the complexity in developing equations for cracked two dimensional structures. In this thesis the analytical approach using an energy formulation is extended to plates with through-thickness cracks, where modeshapes from either numerical modelling or experimental measurements can be employed to determine the energy of vibration. It is demonstrated that by using a hybrid approach, incorporating experimentally measured modeshapes along with measured changes in frequencies, the damage parameters can be estimated without resorting to theoretical modelling or numerical analysis. The inverse problem of finding the crack location, size and orientation from measured changes in frequencies is addressed using minimisation techniques. The forward problem and the inverse algorithm is first validated using numerical simulation and experimental testing of beams with edge cracks and centre cracks. The application of the methodology to the two dimensional case is then validated by numerical simulation and experimental modal analysis of plates with through thickness cracks. A statistical procedure is developed for determination of the 90/95 probability of crack detection and the minimum detectable crack size in both cases. It is demonstrated that the measurement of frequency changes can be successfully employed to detect and assess the location and size of cracks in beams and plates, using modeshapes from theory, Finite Element Analysis.

Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants provided data via semistructured interviews, field observations, follow-up interviews, other documentation, and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with open and axial coding techniques to identify themes, which were then crosschecked and triangulated with observation and follow-up interview data. Findings revealed communication issues, a fundamental misconception in training, and a false assumption that all personnel easily acquire computer literacy. Benefits gained from this study should assist maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) organizations within the Department of Defense to improve current and future technology implementation as the research underscores real-life issues from a comparable organization. The implications for positive social change provide a greater understanding of technology-enabled change and contribute to the development of best practices for technology initiatives that address common ST issues in the MRO workplace.

This maintenance of the grid and grid services can be made easier by using an automated system to monitor and repair the grid as necessary. We propose a novel system to perform automated monitoring and repair of grid systems. To the best of our knowledge, no such systems exist. The results show that certain faults can be easily detected and repaired.

The goal of current Navy surface ship maintenance and repair strategy is to sustain readiness and to maximize both combat capability and the amount of time ships are available for employment during their lifetime. The established organizational framework of the Navy to perform this task includes a complex array of activities that are effective overall, but at the expense of efficiency. The current drawdown in budget resources requires that the goals of ship maintenance and modernization be met with improved efficiency. The Afloat Maintenance Command is a proposal to restructure the existing maintenance hierarchy. Improvements in the process of maintenance and modernization are incorporated in the Afloat Maintenance Command through the elimination of redundancies in capabilities and the improvement of funding flows to enhance organizational efficiency and effectiveness. This thesis will provide an overview of the Afloat Maintenance Command and its possible organization in consolidating assets from existing maintenance activities. Additionally, funding alternatives for the Afloat Maintenance Command will be developed and assessed.

Maintenance of locomotives is the main function of Bellville Locomotive Traction Depot in the Western Cape. Therefore, it is important to have a sound maintenance plan in place, to prevent a negative impact on the availability and reliability of locomotive supply for hauling power to train services. The purpose of the research is to determine the causes of the increased frequency of maintenance through a case study relating to 35-class locomotives. The abnormal increased frequency of wheel change and inter-bogie control repairs on 35-class diesel locomotives is investigated. A research survey was adopted, which included questionnaires and personal interviews based on the literature search. The target group is L&N section, which includes below-deck maintenance, overhaul and change out, repairs to locomotive bogies, frames, wheels, snubbers, inter-bogie control and traction motors. Sixteen people are responsible for all below-deck repairs and service of 52 locomotives. The results of the research will expose the shortcomings of the maintenance plan and propose solutions. This will be achieved by testing the effectiveness of the existing maintenance plan at Spoornet through the identification of the causes for the abnormal increase in wheel changes and inter-bogie control repairs on 35-class diesel locomotives. The outcome from this case study research will be to quantify the benefits arising from the effective application of a maintenance plan.
