Abstract:
The article discusses the objectives of the Horizon Europe framework programme, conceived by the European Commission for 2021–2027, for the purposes of research and innovation. This programme is structured around three pillars, focusing on: creating the right conditions for researchers to acquire a high level of knowledge and skills, harnessing Europe’s intellectual capital, development of key technologies and innovative solutions in selected areas. The thematic groups of Horizon Europe have been presented, including: health, digital solutions, climate, energy, industry, bioeconomy. Attention has been paid to the organisation of international cooperation in the scope of research and innovation, where partnership has a special place in the upcoming programme perspective. The partnership is understood here as cooperation between research teams from EU Member States, the private sector, foundations or associations in undertaking and carrying out initiatives to support the development and implementation of the research agenda. The place of hydrogen technology in the development of various sectors of the economy was emphasised – from energy, road, rail, air, inland and sea transport, through heating and air conditioning, to the petrochemical, chemical and steel industries. The gas industry has a great role to play in the implementation of these technologies, having both the experience and the infrastructure to transport natural gas with the addition of hydrogen or to store hydrogen as an energy carrier. The benefits of implementing Horizon Europe have been presented. In addition to the chief benefits, related to the main objective of helping to make Europe a climate-neutral continent by 2050, attention has been paid to ensuring open access to publications and raw research results as well as to reinforcing international cooperation between research teams. The main assumptions and objectives of the Digital Europe programme have been presented, as well as the areas covered by funding (e.g. artificial intelligence, advanced digital skills, wide use of modern digital technologies in the entire economy). Both Horizon Europe and Digital Europe are compatible with the European Green Deal strategy of the EU.

Abstract:
In Europe, more than a third of electric energy is consumed by industry. The European Union aims to regulate various industrial product groups to reduce this rate. It has also led to the development of the ISO 14955 standard series ‘Environmental evaluation of machine tools‘. A method, however, to determine the efficiency of a machine tool quantitatively is still missing. In addition, the supply of compressed air, cooling water, extraction and air-conditioning by technical building services has generally been disregarded until now. These gaps are filled by recent research work.

Abstract:
Abstract During the 1930s Europe witnessed the coming to fruition of early efforts to create a new sort of building: the airport terminal. Architects and engineers struggled to define its essential layout and technical demands, as well as its cultural and aesthetic implications. ¿How did these first designers deal with the invention of a new kind of architectural type? Among many other, four examples of airport terminal have been chosen to illustrate the successes and failures of the first mature approaches to this type of building, which was born at the beginning of the 20th century and has been in constant revision up to the present time: Madrid-Barajas (1933), Paris-Le Bourget (1937), Dublin-Collinstown (1940) and Berlin- Tempelhof, (started in 1936).

Abstract:
Abstract Current power grid and market development, characterized by large growth of distributed energy sources in recent years, especially in Europa, are according energy storage systems an increasingly larger field of implementation. Existing storage technologies, e.g. pumped-storage power plants, have to be upgraded and extended by new but not yet commercially viable technologies (e.g. batteries or adiabatic compressed air energy storage) that meet expected demands. Optimal sizing of storage systems and technically and economically optimal operating strategies are the major challenges to the integration of such systems in the future smart grid. This paper surveys firstly the literature on the latest niche applications. Then, potential new use case and operating scenarios for energy storage systems in smart grids, which have been field tested, are presented and discussed and subsequently assessed technically and economically.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the age of mass tourism, legislation is necessary to cover the rights and obligations of both passengers and airlines. Air passengers’ rights are enshrined in specific laws that support travelers and provide for protection and compensation when people face flight disruptions. These rules may differ depending on the region. The main problem in this field is that many people are unaware that the law is on their side and even passenger rights exist. Experience shows that 85% of air passengers are unaware of their rights. The legal basis of the European Union air passengers’ rights is Articles 91 and 100 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 February 2004 establish common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights. Key words: passenger rights, flight delay; flight cancellation; overbooked flight; missed connecting flight; airline strike; delayed, lost, or damaged baggage.

Abstract:
In 1953, Ramón Vázquez Molezún received the National Architecture Prize for his Contemporary Art Museum project. It was his second award in little more than two years, after receiving the First Hispanic-American Biennial Prize for his Open-air theatre; tribute to Gaudi. Paradoxically, thanks to these academic works made during his stay as a pensioner at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Molezún became, without having built any construction yet, a model for both architects and architecture students of our country. The Contemporary Art Museum was, at the time, a key project in the progression of Molezun’s career, and one of the most influential works among his colleagues. First of all, this article studies the context of this museum, of the concept drawn by Ramón Vázquez Molezún without any intention of building it, trying to uncover the keys of its essence. Gaudi and Wright allusions, as well as his travels around Europe, are mandatory stops. Secondly, the article tries to analyze in what measure this project, a museum made muse, could have been an inspiration for a great number of built projects, both Molezún’s and others.

Abstract:
Abstract Aims Atrial electrical remodelling (AER) is a transitional period associated with the progression and long-term maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to study the progression of AER in individual patients with implantable devices and AF episodes. Methods and results Observational multicentre study (51 centres) including 4618 patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator +/−resynchronization therapy (ICD/CRT-D) and 352 patients (2 centres) with pacemakers (median follow-up: 3.4 years). Atrial activation rate (AAR) was quantified as the frequency of the dominant peak in the signal spectrum of AF episodes with atrial bipolar electrograms. Patients with complete progression of AER, from paroxysmal AF episodes to electrically remodelled persistent AF, were used to depict patient-specific AER slopes. A total of 34 712 AF tracings from 830 patients (87 with pacemakers) were suitable for the study. Complete progression of AER was documented in 216 patients (16 with pacemakers). Patients with persistent AF after completion of AER showed ∼30% faster AAR than patients with paroxysmal AF. The slope of AAR changes during AF progression revealed patient-specific patterns that correlated with the time-to-completion of AER (R2 = 0.85). Pacemaker patients were older than patients with ICD/CRT-Ds (78.3 vs. 67.2 year olds, respectively, P < 0.001) and had a shorter median time-to-completion of AER (24.9 vs. 93.5 days, respectively, P = 0.016). Remote transmissions in patients with ICD/CRT-D devices enabled the estimation of the time-to-completion of AER using the predicted slope of AAR changes from initiation to completion of electrical remodelling (R2 = 0.45). Conclusion The AF progression shows patient-specific patterns of AER, which can be estimated using available remote-monitoring technology.

Abstract:
This paper highlights the problems associated with the poor quality of services and the lack of effective marketing interaction between all the participants of the charter air transportation in the tourist summer season of 2018 in Ukraine. The paper aims to develop an algorithm for the actions of all participants of tourist services market in order to establish effective marketing interaction based on the analysis of the reasons influencing the destabilization of the tourist services market in the field of charter air transportation. Flight delay statistics were selected for June-July 2018 due to the fact that it was during this period that the problem manifested itself especially sharply. So, not time-series data, but cross-sectional data were selected for the analysis of the problem cause. At the same time, for confident conclusions about the increase in passenger traffic, 5-year periods were chosen, namely, the period 2014–2018 was compared with the period 2009–2013. During the research, statistical methods of one-factor linear correlation-regression analysis were used, as well as a comparative analysis of the indicators of the charter air transportation participants’ performance in Ukraine. The analysis of charter air transportation market showed that increasing the age of the aircraft in a year leads to a decrease in the proportion of timely flights by 2.5%. The marketing analysis proves that the rapid increase in the number of passengers was caused by the explosive increase in irregular flights. The results of the study also indicate that the well-organized interaction between the tour operator and the airlines significantly affects the timeliness of the flights. Based on defined problems of the charter air transportation market, a set of recommendations has been proposed for improving the marketing interaction of all market participants: tourists, tour operators, airlines and government agencies.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates the air travel tax in Europe and focuses on the tax levied in Germany. The current status quo and disputes of the air travel tax in Germany and in Europe are explored and recent decisions by the European Union Grand Court and the uropean Commission with regards to the tax are given. The paper contributes to the existing literature by analyzing the role the tax has on possible distortion of competition in Europe and argues that airlines with a point-to-point business model are placed at a competitive disadvantage with respect to their hub-and-spoke counterparts, when the tax is reasoned to encourage environmentally-balanced behavior in air travel.

Abstract:
The civil aviation is a systemically important sector of the European economy. In 2015, a new development strategy defining the role of air transport in passenger communications was adopted. The implementation of the strategy provides for, among other things, tickets cost reduction, which will have its impact on the population mobility. In this context, the article considers the priorities of the development strategy, noting that the demand for passenger air travel depends on multiple factors. They can be aggregated into four groups: social stability, macroeconomic, intrasectoral, and inter-transport factors. Their influence on the demand value varies by its degree, while being both price-based and non-price-based in nature. The article defines the leaders of the passenger air transportation market, addresses the problems obstructing the air transportation network development. It also highlights the European passenger air transportation market specifics and the prospects for development of a unified transport system to ensure a positive socio-economic effect in the development of the economy. A high level of competition with a comparable level of service quality calls for new forms of relationship with consumers. With a convenient passenger transportation infrastructure built nowadays in Europe, there are companies operating on the market that offer fairly expensive as well as low-cost transportation service. In addition, the level of average per capita income in Europe is quite high. All combined, these factors predetermine increased demand for transportation by air. Given these conditions, adoption of innovations and digital technologies, together with the encouragement of investments, should present a stimulus for growth. The adoption of the said measures will lead to passenger service quality improvement, traffic turnover and airlines’ revenues increase, and more job opportunities. Reliability, safety, environment are regarded as strategic priorities.

Abstract:
Does air have value? In the first volume of Capital, Marx suggested it did not: “A thing can be a use-value, without having value,” he explained. “This is the case whenever its utility to man is not due to labour. Such are air, virgin soil, natural meadows, &c.” Because it has no value, understood by Marx in this context to mean labor value, air cannot be a commodity: “Commodities come into the world in the shape of use-values, articles, or goods, such as iron, linen, corn, &c. This is their plain, homely, bodily form. They are, however, commodities, only because they are something two fold, both object of utility, and, at the same time, depositories of value.” Marx's materialist focus on human labor and industrial production made it hard for him to imagine air as a commodity—at least when he published the first volume of Capital in 1867.

Abstract:
Abstract. The atmospheric composition is a societal issue and, following new European directives, its forecast is now recommended to quantify the air quality. It concerns both gaseous and particles species, identified as potential problems for health. In Europe, numerical systems providing daily air quality forecasts are numerous and, mostly, operated by universities. Following recent European research projects (GEMS, PROMOTE), an organization of the air quality forecast is currently under development. But for the moment, many platforms exist, each of them with strengths and weaknesses. This overview paper presents all existing systems in Europe and try to identify the main remaining gaps in the air quality forecast knowledge. As modeling systems are now able to reasonably forecast gaseous species, and in a lesser extent aerosols, the future directions would concern the use of these systems with ensemble approaches and satellite data assimilation. If numerous improvements were recently done on emissions and chemistry knowledge, improvements are still needed especially concerning meteorology, which remains a weak point of forecast systems. Future directions will also concern the use of these forecast tools to better understand and quantify the air pollution impact on health.

Abstract:
This article presents a set analysis of European airlines. The main results reveal that ARIMA models have better performance than the Holt-Winters method in time series of Revenue Passenger Kilometres in nineteen airlines members of the Association of European Airlines (AEA). Only seven airlines have been influenced by the September 11th terrorist attack, SARS and the ash crisis, while none of the analysed airlines has been influenced by the economic crisis that began in 2008. The results obtained might suggest, on the one hand that airlines can find the flexibility to meet demand, despite their difficulty to adjust capacity. On the other hand, given the heterogeneity of resources and flight destinations, the business environment does not affect the airlines in the same way or with the same intensity.

Abstract:
The first step to steer passenger Urban Air Mobility (pUAM) towards the necessity of sustainability is to understand its impact on our urban transportation systems. This research emphasises the social footprint of passenger drones in scheduled operation as an early business model in European Functional Urban Areas. The literature review is guided by the corresponding Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators (SUMI). The prospective impact which the introduction of pUAM has on the evaluation of European transportation systems regarding their affordability for the public, their inclusivity for mobility-impaired groups, their accessibility to commuters and the level of customer satisfaction is analysed. Furthermore, the impact of pUAM on the perceived quality of public urban space is examined. Results indicate the overall social footprint of passenger drones in European transport systems to be negative. Early market pUAM may lead to an unbalanced distribution of potential benefits, with services tailored to address only a limited number of citizens. Highlighting pathways for a societal benefiting technology, recommendations are provided for urban planning and city development.

Abstract:
Evidence from a survey conducted by the European Continental Section of the International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP-ECS) suggests that birds have not served as such good early warning indicators of ecological damage from acid precipitation as they have for damage from organochlorine pesticide use. Only a few highly specialized species have been badly affected, and then long after the impact was observed in other organisms. Some birds have even benefited from the superabundance of dead and decaying standing timber.

Abstract:
In an earlier study, the author attempted to give some quantitative estimates of the problems that free flow might face in Europe. The study was based on a traffic sample from the Eurocontrol Route Charges Office for a busy day in 1991. More recently, they generously made available a similar sample for a day in 1997. Using this new data, the study has been extended to cover wider aspects of the free flow problem. The central problem is that of ensuring safety. This will require a mechanism to detect collision threats and safely to resolve the problems. Possible tools are ground-based surveillance and/or airborne systems. This paper will use computer modelling to predict the loads that these detection and resolution systems must face.
