Abstract:
In this thesis, I explore answers to three central questions: (i) what are beliefs, (ii) why do we have them, and (iii) how should we interpret doxastic correctness, the principle that it is correct to believe that p if and only if p? The first question has a long history in philosophy of mind, and in various forms can be dated at least as far back as David Hume. For that reason, I refer to the problem as Hume’s Problem. As I interpret the question, the main difficulty with accounting for what beliefs are, is in distinguishing them from forms of acceptance, where acceptances are understood as regarding-as-true attitudes—these include assuming, supposing, guessing, and (propositional) imagining. I take this technical use of ‘acceptance’ from Velleman (2000). The second question I interpret as a biological question about why we, as organisms with beliefs, have beliefs. Answering this question depends on how we answer the first question, in the sense that, in explaining why we have beliefs, we are explaining why we have an attitude that meets the conditions that we set for beliefs to meet. And the third question is largely about the important relation between belief and truth; why is it that, as believers, we emphasise the apparent platitude that a belief is correct if and only if it is true? To address these questions, I consider three different theoretical approaches to understanding beliefs. Specifically, I discuss teleological theories, normative theories, and a functional theory. For various reasons, I argue that teleological accounts fail to provide satisfactory answers to the three central questions (Part I); that normative accounts also fail to answer our central questions (Part II); but that a functional account, appropriately understood, can provide answers to these questions (Part III). In particular, I argue for what I call the doxastic effects thesis, which defines belief according to the effects beliefs have (or their outputs); and I propose that we interpret the components of this thesis as functional statements. The doxastic effects thesis allows us to answer Hume’s Problem, by proposing necessary and sufficient conditions for beliefs to meet; and interpreting these conditions as functions allows us to explain, at least in part, why we have beliefs. Concerning doxastic correctness, I argue that our commitment to the principle has arisen as a social construct, and therefore should be given (what I call) a thin reading; as opposed to the substantive reading that we get on the teleological and normative accounts, such that doxastic correctness states an essential fact about belief. Finally, in Part IV, I extend the first question, what beliefs are, to a third doxastic attitude. Namely, suspended belief (suspension). I argue that one further advantage of my functional theory of belief is that it can account for suspension as a doxastic attitude, unlike the teleological and normative alternatives.

Wilson, Meghan Loving. "Improving the functional fitness of older adults through Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together (LIFT): Use of an integrated research-practice partnership approach in community and clinical settings." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82869.

Abstract:
Older adults represent one of the fastest growing populations as well as one of the most inactive. The effects of inactivity (e.g., fall risk, reduced quality of life, inability to age in place) may be mitigated through health promotion programs that include strength-training components. In addition to targeted exercises, it is recommended that programs for older adults incorporate principles of group dynamics (e.g., group goal setting, group distinctiveness) as these types of interventions have previously increased adherence and compliance of physical activity beyond the life of the program and are more effective than individually delivered interventions (e.g., at home DVD, one-on-one). However, these programs are not readily adopted and sustained in practice, which could reflect a lack of programmatic fit within the intended delivery setting. Forming a partnership with key stakeholders within the intended practice setting (e.g., communities and clinics) to identify or develop an evidence-based program that satisfies the mission, values, and resources of the deliver setting, may influence program uptake and sustainability. It is essential to assess setting- and staff-level perceptions of program fit prior to successful implementation. Once interventions are embedded within the standards of care or practice, the intervention has the potential to reach a greater number of older adults and improve their functional fitness outcomes. These intervention attributes are outlined in the prominent RE-AIM Framework: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance. Taken together, practice- and research- adaptations may increase the adoption of an intervention, and it is necessary to also measure the degree to which an adapted program impacts Reach, Effect, Implementation, and Maintenance. Practice- and evidence-based adaptations are often necessary and inevitable to improve intervention fit within an intended delivery setting. The overall objective of this dissertation was to use an integrated research-practice partnership approach to select, adapt, and evaluate effects of a multi-faceted strength-training program for older adults in community and clinical settings. The aim of Manuscript 1 was to describe the process by which an evidence-based intervention was adapted to meet the needs of a community entity as well as the initial Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance dimensions of the RE-AIM framework. Manuscript 2 aims to evaluate the initial Reach of older adults and Effect on functional fitness of the adapted program, LIFT, to generate evidence in support of the adapted intervention through an integrated research-practice partnership with a community entity. Manuscript 3 outlines the development, processes, and temporal outcomes of an integrated research-practice partnership approach aimed at linking stakeholders across the academic-clinical-community continuum to assess feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness outcomes associated with Implementation of a LIFT referral scheme. Based on the research presented in this dissertation, it is concluded that an integrated research-practice partnership, although time intensive, may be an effective approach to report real-world adaptations based on the needs of the delivery setting without compromising effects of an evidence-based strength-training intervention for older adults.

Abstract:
The use of design automation tools has allowed complex projects to reach feasible time-to-market and cost parameters. In this context, logic synthesis is a critical procedure in the design flow. The technology independent step (part of the logic synthesis which is performed regardless any physical property) is traditionally performed over equations. The development of new multi-level optimization algorithms has recently shifted towards the use of And-Inverter-Graphs (AIGs). The number of nodes and the graphs depth in AIGs present better correlation with resulting circuit area and delay than any characteristic of other representations. In this work, a technology independent synthesis algorithm that works on top of an AIG data structure is proposed. A novel approach for AIG construction, based on a new synthesis paradigm called functional composition, is introduced. This approach consists in building the final AIG by associating simpler AIGs, in a bottom-up approach. The method controls, during the graphs construction, the characteristics of final and intermediate graphs by applying a cost function as a way to evaluate the quality of those AIGs. The goal is to minimize the number of nodes and the depth of the final AIG. This multi-objective synthesis algorithm has presented interesting features and advantages when compared to traditional approaches. Moreover, this work presents a method for AIGs construction for multiple output functions, which enhances structural sharing, improving the resulting circuit. Results have shown an improvement of around 5% in number of nodes when compared to ABC tool.

Abstract:
This research aims to describe investigate possibilities of learning situations in mathematics concepts related to polynomial functions of the 1st degree ( In order Function ) with students from 1st grade of Technical Education Middle Level Integrated IFS - Campus São Cristóvão making use of a teaching sequence mediated by the use of a dynamic geometry software, Geogebra. To this purpose, a study, based on the ideas of Machado (2008 ), Pais (2011 ) and Oliveira (2013 ), based on the Engineering Curriculum discussed by Artigue (1996 ) with two classes from 1st Series Technical Course Intermediate Level Integrated was conducted Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Sergipe - Campus São Cristóvão / SE, which formed study groups that we call group with the experiment and group without the experiment. At the end of the experiment it was found that the group with the experiment had better results than the group without the experiment. The data indicated that using a dynamic geometry software in a dynamic geometry environment provides a great interaction between the participants constituting a positive factor to learning, since they facilitate the construction of new concepts, provide a comparison between different forms of representation of a function, thereby enabling conditions for the participant to recognize the graphical representation of an polynomial function of the first degree as a straight, expressing the relation between the coefficients of the straight equation with its graphical and algebraic representations.

In this work, it is presented a study on linear and quadratic functions and problem-solving through the use of programming, focusing on the students of the last year of elementary school and the first year of high school. Nowadays we notice apathy and demotivation from the students in the basic education due to their belief that what they learn in the school is unnecessary and, mainly, when facing the usual difficulties concerning Mathematics. Based on this premise, this work aims to point out a direct link between problem-solving and programming, interactively and attractively approaching a way to acquire the necessary skills in these two areas. Using the Scratch software to solve the proposed activities on linear and quadratic functions, we were able to captivate students' interest and achieve greater participation in the classroom through differentiated and creative activities. It also includes the benefits of learning how to program, which is considered an essential skill for the future.

Abstract:
Administrateurs and mandataires judiciaires belong to professions without a clientele, subject to strict incompatibility of practice and whose activity depends almost exclusively on the courts. This unique status, which stands out in the world of regulated professions, is regularly called into question. As one reflects upon the future of these professions, one must assess the purpose of the functions performed by these professionals. Since the law of 25 January 1985, the functions of the syndic have been split into two. This development was justified by the idea that the primacy given to the objective of saving the business meant that the interests involved had to be dealt with by separate actors. However, the study of the prerogatives of the insolvency practitioners shows that the mandataire judiciaire does not act more in the interest of the creditors than of the company. Similarly, the rights and actions of the administrateur are less about defending one of the interests at stake to the detriment of the others than about a conservatory mission. This is so because, ultimately, all the prerogatives of the mandataires de justice can be related to a form of defense of the general interest. The insolvency practitioners may thus be called upon to police business life, to act as auxiliaries in the service of the court, or to contribute to the rescue of the business, an objective apprehended by the law of 25 January 1985 as being in the general interest. If the status of mandataires de justice may evolve, it is therefore necessary to preserve the independence of these professionals, with regard to the interests involved, in order to guarantee the conditions for the satisfactory performance of their mission

Abstract:

Understanding Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) influence is essential for the discipline of nursing. There are approximately 5000 CNEs in the United States, all are tasked with being the primary identifiable leader representing organizations in which they are employed and the nursing profession of which they are a part. In this capacity, the CNE is the gatekeeper for the advancement of the majority of the 2.4 million nurses practicing in the U.S. Literature suggests that early CNEs lacked influence and often were not recognized members of organizational executive teams. Today, after two decades of struggle, CNEs are identified as essential executive team members. However, they still self identify as being less influential than their C-suite counterparts, leaving us to question, "Having gotten to the table, now what?" This study was designed as an initial step toward answering this question through Validation of the Adams Influence Model (AIM). The AIM is a framework that can be used to understand the influence of the CNE in the acute care setting. The study exposed the AIM to a qualitative data set collected as part of an academic medical center's Survey of the Professional Practice Environment. Directed content analysis was used to categorize survey responses and identify influence content toward validation and refinement of the AIM's operational definitions. Study results validated AIM influence factors and influence attributes with some refinement. In addition to development of a refined AIM, study findings also helped identify continued research opportunities. These research potentials included the exploration of; influence instrument development, the influence process, differences between influence and power, and the relationship between CNE influence, practice/ work environments and patient outcomes. As a discipline, nursing must continue to understand the influence of the CNE. These individuals are leading the profession, at what pace and in what direction cannot be left to chance

Abstract:
Westerners have for centuries been present in Africa with different motives. The most recent phenomenon is young volunteers that, instead of being tourists in a normal sense, go to the continent to work within organizations as for example teachers. This study, where the empirical material is based on qualitative interviews done with twelve European volunteers during a minor field study in Ghana, aims to examine what apprehension the volunteers have of their role and function. To create an understanding for the purpose, questions on the meaning of the concept of volunteering, motives and outcomes of the volunteering experience as well as the view of westerners and Ghanaians have been asked. In the light of postcolonialism and volunteer tourism, the study shows a number of factors that explains motives and the understanding of the concept, with a focus on the learning and growth of the volunteer. The outcome circles around knowledge on development issues and aid work as well as being able to have an impact on Ghanaians and development in Ghana. The volunteers also show revulsion from other westerners (that want to “help” and have a “colonial” behavior) and Ghanaians, but at the same time they prefer to spend time with westerners. The volunteers’ apprehension of their role and function is found to be bipartite; expressed is that they are in Ghana to experience and to learn, but understood is also that they see it as their task to spread their view of life, help the locals and contribute to development. A possible explanation to this contradiction might be that the volunteers, grown up in a time where they have been taught “how they should think” about “Us” and “Them”, distance themselves from everything that disaffirm their belief. However, at the same time they are deeply influenced by the western society’s way of focusing on differences between people, differences with signatures such as “developed” and “underdeveloped”. It creates a complexity of knowing something but not being able to live by it.

Abstract:
This work seeks to investigate the feasibility of a teaching methodology proposal on applications of related function from didactic situations related to agroecology. The didactic situations developed are based on Guy Brousseau's Theory of Didactic Situations, where students construct knowledge through didactic and / or aditional situations, from the dialectics of action, formulation, validation and institutionalization. Artigue didactic methodology was used as research methodology. The proposal was applied in a class of the first year of high school of the Casa Familiar Rural de São Jorge d'Oeste, where the students study in alternation regime and has as base school the Colégio Estadual Padre José de Anchieta de São Jorge d'Oeste. It was noticed through the records of the students that there was a development of the students in regard to expressing mathematically. Therefore, it can be concluded that didactic situations contributed to the teaching of student learning, just as the context related to agroecology contributed to the exchange of experiences with their families. In addition, the Theory of Didactic Situations and the Structuring of the Milieu (Medium) gave support to the study of the various relationships between knowledge or knowledge, students and the relations between the knowledge itself or knowledge and the situations.

Abstract:
Since 1987 Uddcomb Engineering has repaired pulps by their own developed overlay welding method even called Uddcomb method. Currently each welding machine is operated by two persons. To increase Uddcomb Engineering competitiveness the reduced number of operators is desired. An installation of a monitoring system which can aid humans in the welding quality control also helps to improve company’s position. A future goal would be to make this monitoring system automatic without a human operator in the loop. In this thesis, arc voltage, weld current and audio signals were collected and analyzed with aim on finding algorithms to monitor the quality of the welding process. The use of statistics tools is the basis for detecting variations in the voltage and current data, associated with welding process. It has been shown that voltage signal can be used as a part of the welding quality control. The audio signal from welding at low frequencies varies with the speed of the process. The signal can also be incorporated in the monitoring of the process. The use of filters, growing sums and statistics are key elements in the algorithms presented in this report.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is largely to consider the de Stoicorum repugnantiis in sympathetic terms as part of Plutarch's wider philosophical output. It argues that Plutarch's approach in the work could not be that of a negative Sceptic, since Plutarch held his own positive beliefs (a form of Platonism) and, although he draws heavily on the arguments of the Sceptical Academy, he saw Scepticism itself as a positive tool. Section II of the thesis traces the history of the polemical motif of self-contradiction, which turns out to be based on a specific argument used by the Academy against Stoic ethics. Plutarch adopts this argument as it stands and uses it extensively; but he also identifies the Stoic inconsistencies he uncovers as symptomatic of the Stoics' doctrinal diversion from Plato, and on this basis he sets out to show that when the Stoics diverge from Plato in any area of doctrine (logical or physical as well as ethical) they likewise fall into self-contradiction. If it is right to think that Plutarch has not chosen his arguments randomly, it becomes increasingly unlikely that he has presented them randomly. So section III considers the idea that Plutarch might have organised his arguments following a standard Academic pattern. Section IV presents a study of each of Plutarch's arguments in the de Stoic, rep. not only to confirm his Platonising interests, but also to demonstrate that the contradictions fall into 'sections', each of which deals with topics drawn from a common area in standard Academic polemic. Section V considers the conclusions that can be drawn from the themes that underlie each section: in fact, it happens that a structure emerges which presupposes a distinctive outlook within Academic literature, and so suggests that Plutarch has made use of a particular work to guide his process of composition.

Abstract:
In the last few years the World Wide Web has dramatically changed the way people are communicating with each other. The growing availability of Social Media Systems like Internet fora, weblogs and social networks ensure that the Internet is today, what it was originally designed for: A technical platform in which all users are able to interact with each other. Nowadays, there are billions of user comments available discussing all aspects of life and the data source is still growing. This thesis investigates, whether it is possible to use this growing amount of freely provided user comments to extract quality related information. The concept is based on the observation that customers are not only posting marketing relevant information. They also publish product oriented content including positive and negative experiences. It is assumed that this information represents a valuable data source for quality analyses: The original voices of the customers promise to specify a more exact and more concrete definition of \"quality\" than the one that is available to manufacturers or market researchers today. However, the huge amount of unstructured user comments makes their evaluation very complex. It is impossible for an analysis protagonist to manually investigate the provided customer feedback. Therefore, Social Media specific algorithms have to be developed to collect, pre-process and finally analyze the data. This has been done by the Social Media monitoring system AIM (Automotive Internet Mining) that is the subject of this thesis. It investigates how manufacturers, products, product features and related opinions are discussed in order to estimate the overall product quality from the customers\\\' point of view. AIM is able to track different types of data sources using a flexible multi-agent based crawler architecture. In contrast to classical web crawlers, the multi-agent based crawler supports individual crawling policies to minimize the download of irrelevant web pages. In addition, an unsupervised wrapper induction algorithm is introduced to automatically generate content extraction parameters which are specific for the crawled Social Media systems. The extracted user comments are analyzed by different content analysis algorithms to gain a deeper insight into the discussed topics and opinions. Hereby, three different topic types are supported depending on the analysis needs. * The creation of highly reliable analysis results is realized by using a special context-aware taxonomy-based classification system. * Fast ad-hoc analyses are applied on top of classical fulltext search capabilities. * Finally, AIM supports the detection of blind-spots by using a new fuzzified hierarchical clustering algorithm. It generates topical clusters while supporting multiple topics within each user comment. All three topic types are treated in a unified way to enable an analysis protagonist to apply all methods simultaneously and in exchange. The systematically processed user comments are visualized within an easy and flexible interactive analysis frontend. Special abstraction techniques support the investigation of thousands of user comments with minimal time efforts. Hereby, specifically created indices show the relevancy and customer satisfaction of a given topic

This project has been carried out in cooperation with Mälarplast, a manufacturer of plasticproducts, and Avalon Innovation, an engineering consultant firm focusing on product development. The first objective was to develop a flexible storage solution for inflight and railwaycatering, using Avalon’s new development process Avalon Innovation Model (AIM). Mälarplasthad realized a need for a product which they could produce as one solution which couldbe configured to divide their drawers, used by airline and railway caterers, into pockets ofdifferent sizes. The second objective was to evaluate and analyze how well AIM worked as aproduct development tool and process as well as a service product. With the intention ofproviding recommendations for improvements for further development of the model, both interms of a service product and as product development process.Proceeding according to AIM, user studies at caterers, during service on a train and at an airlineutility department were performed. User needs identified during these studies wereranked with the help of users, buyers, sellers and manufacturers of these kinds of products. Two main problems were found, these were: flexibility in terms of pocket sizes and a need tokeep food at an even temperature during transport. The final concept was for a flexible plasticinlay that creates pockets in the specified drawer. It was optimized to hold the most commonglass sizes reported by contacted airlines.AIM was analyzed through interviews and discussions with key personnel and practitioners ofAIM at Avalon. Theoretical studies through scientific articles and other literature resources aswell as impressions from the project mentioned above were also used. The result showed thatAIM was not well described in terms of when and where the specified development toolsshould be used as well as how. Further, a lack of functional integration of teams and customersin AIM was found, which could make the process less than optimal in terms of efficiencyand innovation success. Recommendations offered including improvements of the process’slayout and strategy in terms of handling iterations of product concepts and ideas, by makingthe process more agile and flexible. Also a better separation between AIM the product andAIM the process is recommended in order to improve the focus of the offer to customers aswell as the information given to developers.

This research consists on working with mathematical functions through contributions made by the Mathematical Modeling practice, using a model which allows the educator to develop a search for interaction using mathematics contextualized in the students‟ reality. Thus, opposite to the more traditional teaching methods, this study indicates the possibility of understanding content related to affine functions, based on the results obtained in a group composed by four students from first year of high school in Brazil and, methodologically, using the mathematical modeling for this purpose. This research is divided in five chapters that seek to guide the educator to the initial importance of the functions content in the Brazilian education, the practical lessons targeted to students in a field research, which sought to bring the subject closer to the students‟ reality through a problem-situation involving students in a pizzeria near the school. Hence, reality and mathematics become inextricable tools for students to understand common situations, that incorporate the subject to a variety of experiences, ensuring teachers and students wide possibilities to develop together an understanding of this subject, with the necessary interaction to accomplish quality learning.

Full text
Abstract:
The B-cell specific enzyme Activation-induced deaminase (AID) is responsible for the diversification of rearranged antibody genes in activated B cells during humoral immune responses. AID deaminates dC to dU at the Immunoglobulin (Ig) loci and the uracil thereby introduced is processed in an error-prone fashion by specific DNA repair enzymes leading to somatic hypermutation (SHM), which underpins the affinity maturation of the antibody response, and to the DNA breaks necessary for class-switch recombination (CSR), which changes the isotype class of the antibody from IgM to IgG, IgA or IgE. Structure-function analysis of the AID protein was undertaken to better refine the 3-dimensional model of the protein previously published (Patenaude et al., 2009) which was based on a similar protein APOBEC2 whose structure has been previously elucidated (Prochnow et al., 2007). However, the C-terminal domain of AID (residues 182-198) is unique to AID and its structural details are lacking. This region is further interesting because the C-terminal domain, encoded by exon 5 of Aicda gene, has been shown to be essential for several of its biological functions: CSR, cytoplasmic retention, and nucleo-cytoplasmic shuttling. To better understand this region, and to define and identify potential functional domains, structure-function analysis was undertaken by creating truncations and point mutants and systematically assessing them for catalytic, SHM, and CSR activities. From such studies, it was identified that alpha-helix 6 (α6) is structurally important for AID catalytic activity while the C-terminal domain is not just dispensable for catalytic activity, but mutants lacking a portion of or all of the C-terminal domain are hyperactive for both catalytic activity and somatic hypermutation. We speculated that the hyperactivity of these mutants could account for the apparent dominant negative effect observed in a subset of patients with Hyper IgM type II (HIGM-II) syndrome, an immunodeficiency characterized by a normal or elevated SHM and lack or reduced switched isotypes in serum. While most loss of function mutations in AID are transmitted as autosomal recessive traits resulting in AID deficiency, in a subset of patients suffering from HIGM-II, Aicda mutations are inherited in an autosomal dominant (AD) manner. While the heterozygous carriers of the recessive alleles are asymptomatic, AD patients, who express one normal protein of AID along with a C-terminally truncated protein, show a similar HIGM-II immunodeficiency to AID-deficient patients and AID-null mice. This would suggest that the truncated AID protein has a dominant negative effect on the full-length protein. Two non-mutually exclusive possible explanations for this effect have been proposed: the truncated protein could form oligomers with full-length AID protein and render them non-functional, or the truncated protein could compete with the full-length protein for cellular factors involved in nucleo-cytoplasmic shuttling and/or other factors. We have investigated these possibilities and propose the alternative explanation that the hyperactivity of the truncated proteins leads to increased off-target mutations, DNA double-strand breaks, clonal expansion defects, and presumably p53-dependant apoptosis in primary B-lymphocytes. Our results correlate well with the clinical symptoms presented by AD patients: B cells with normal SHM and absence of the lymphadenopathies characteristic of AID-deficient patients. Furthermore, we identify a novel domain in alpha-helix 6 containing positively charged arginines that seem to be necessary for the enzyme's biological function, by mediating the interaction with a DNA targeting factor.
Abstract:
This study will show different interactions that a user needs to adjust in order to find and create trust within a guild in the game World of Warcraft. The aim of this study is to see if these interactions are used in different ways depending on which guild a user is a member in. The study is based on three different guilds and a few WoW-users perspectives, experiences and thoughts. The main methods in this study is based on qualitative methods that includes surveys, scenarios, observation and semi-structured interviews. The analysis has been based on two theories, social capital theory and the flow theory. This study has also examined how the design and features of WoW can affect a user's interactions, both in and outside the game.

Abstract:

The background to this paper is that that many new founded companies have a problem to achieve such a growth rate that they manage to stay alive their first five years. Only a few of the new started company is able to achieve a rapid growth rate in their early lives. Why is this? And can a vision be the answer? The answer to this is yes, a vision can be the answer. But how shall the vision be implemented in the organization in order to work? With this back ground a question were formulated:

“How do small, high growth companies work with their vision?”

The study is a case study of a small company in Sweden; company Alpha, who has had a growth rate of over 100 percent per year over the last six years. The company was chosen because of its size and its almost unique way of achieving a high growth rate.

From several theoretical references a model were created. This model focuses on four different dimensions that are important in order to work and use a vision within a company. These four aspects were; vision development, vision articulation, and vision communication and vision implementation.

The conclusion of the paper is that rapid growth companies work with visions as a tool to attract personal, and stakeholders. They also work with it in a way that the vision becomes a management tool, used for controlling and showing the direction to the employees, making their work, and decision-taking easier. This is a way to make the employees more secure in both their own actions and what to expect of the company. The paper also shows that companies’ works with smaller visions, department visions, in order to easier implement the vision in the day-to-day work.

Mortazian, Mona. "How do listing requirements impact firms : the case of AIM." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/13612.

Full text
Abstract:
The restrictive listing requirements imposed by the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange results in the listing of high quality companies, while at the same time provides a higher degree of investor protection. These requirements can however be an obstacle for small and growing companies to go public and raise capital. Thus AIM has developed in order to facilitate the growth of these companies by its lighter listing requirements. This thesis is focused on three outcomes of the lighter listing requirements of AIM. First, AIM companies have a high ownership concentration and lower investor protection, thus enabling blockholders to have a significant impact on their value. This thesis finds that non-managerial and managerial blockholders have quadratic and cubic relationships with firm value respectively. Also, both types of blockholder increase the value of the firm until the first break point which is approximately 30 percent. This is almost exactly the point that the LSE defines as a cut-off point at which the blockholder is regarded as a controlling shareholder. Second, companies moving from the Main market to the AIM impair their information environment when entering the AIM; the information environment is measured by the stock’s liquidity and volatility. This thesis finds that firms experience lower trading activity and lower trading volume, which results in lower liquidity and volatility than matched companies that remain in the Main Market. Third, IPOs listing in the AIM are underpriced in order to compensate for risk. However, the level of underpricing can be alleviated by appointing a reputable Nomad. Underpricing facilitates IPOs to achieve higher aftermarket liquidity in two ways: First, directly by attracting investor attention; and second by diversifying ownership. However, aftermarket liquidity is evident for a longer period than other markets because of a longer lock up period.

Abstract:
This present work aims to study if mathematical research activities can help to develop mathematical argumentation and demonstration capacity in high school students, addressing the theme of growth and decrease of linear functions. For this, it proposes a reflection about the role of argumentation and demonstration in the integral formation of the high school student. It focuses on the transition between basic and higher education, studying some of its difficulties. The study explores the difference between these levels of education, whereas, while the basic school treats mathematics based on arithmetic and algebraic procedures from a practical point of view - such as arithmetic, measurements, equations, data analysis -, higher education demands from the student a greater abstraction level, where argumentation, logical reasoning (deductive and inductive) and demonstrations are necessary conditions to knowledge construction. In the end, we will propose a mathematical activity through an investigative approach, reflecting on how the demonstration, addressed in this way, can contribute to the integral formation of the student and create approximations between the way mathematics is treated in elementary school and in higher education.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis investigates the incentives that affect the decisions of firms to undertake R&D investment and examining the impact of financial constraints on the levels of R&D expenditure of AIM-listed firms in the UK. The thesis comprises six chapters. The first chapter provides an introduction to the research, followed by an overview of the Alternative Investment Market in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 investigates the incentives that influence a firm’s decision to carry out R&D investment. The key empirical findings from a dynamic logistic regression suggest that large sized firms are better at generating innovative activities, that young firms tend to be more likely to innovate, that competitive markets are better at stimulating innovative activities, and that corporate income tax rates have a positive impact on this probability. Chapter 4 explores the impact of financing constraints on the levels of R&D expenditure. Using a system GMM estimator, the empirical findings suggest that working capital buffers R&D levels from transitory financial shocks, thus avoiding the high adjustments costs associated with any change in levels of R&D investment. Chapter 5 investigates the impact of the proceeds from the disposal of fixed assets on R&D expenditure. In contrast to prior literature, the main findings of this chapter suggest that there is a negative association between R&D expenditure and the cash raised from voluntary asset sales, indicating severe binding financing constraints. Practical implementations, promising ideas for future research, and the main findings of this research are summarized in the concluding chapter of the thesis.

This work is part of the research line Information Technologies and Mathematics Education and aims to analyze the contributions of a Dynamic Geometry software, in particular GeoGebra in the interpretation and analysis of affine and quadratic functions by the students of a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. For this, a research question was formulated: What are the contributions of GeoGebra for the study of affine and quadratic functions in a Mathematics course? First, a proposal was elaborated with nine activities to be developed in five four-hour face-to-face meetings using the dynamic geometry software GeoGebra. Based on the theoretical assumption of Raymond Duval s Semiotic Representation Records we elaborated and analyzed the activities. The research qualitative methodology adopted was centered on the Design Research aimed at improving the educational activity proposal to be applied to future students entering the Mathematics Course. The research was carried out with the use of the following instruments to collect data: photocopied activities, pencil-paper media, Screen capture software, audio-recorded semi-structured interviews and protocols of the activities developed by the students. After analyzing the data, it was concluded that possibly the visualization allowed by the GeoGebra dynamism attracted much attention of the students and had a significant contribution to carrying out the activities. In the end of this work, there is a new proposal of improved activities based on the results obtained from the analysis of the activities performed by the students
