Full textAssistance Robotics is a technology to ensure the safety of vulnerable people in their daily lives as well as the monitoring of their health. It is called to grow exponentially in the coming years in order to cope with the ageing of populations. If the benefits of its technologies are notable, the risks that they give rise to the fundamental rights of their users are also important. Like any innovation, robotics assistance requires a legal framework allowing it to develop and raise the confidence of stakeholders. This study is designed to expose the various legal issues related to the introduction of a robot of assistance at the home of both vulnerable people during its installation during its operation. It will be therefore determine how law can cope with such a technical phenomenon. This will lead us to seek answers adapted to the specific problems that arise

Full textThis thesis aims to present, to compare and to value two different kinds of redistribution schemes in France: basic income and personal allocation. The first one has appeared in Europe since fifteen years and consists in replacing social aids by a unique allocation. The second one, personal allocation, is a new way to conceive redistribution. The originality of this project is to introduce mutual of redistribution (mutuelle de redistribution). We respectively present these two different schemes of redistribution in the first and the second part of this thesis. In the third part, we propose a comparison from different viewpoints: from their own functioning and then from their final issues, in particular their ability to fight unemployment and poverty. In the last chapter we defend our own proposals and ways of analysis and thought through the fighting poverty objective

Full textThis thesis examines the complex interactions between different financial flows to developing countries (Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), Public Aid, and personal transfers) on one side, and economic growth, governance indicators, and the informal economy on the other side across several geographic areas. The first chapter finds that FDI and political stability are mutual drivers of GDP growth, with remarkable regional variations, suggesting that socio-political contexts significantly impact this relationship. Notably, foreign direct investments coupled with political stability could encourage sustainable growth. Extending this analysis, the second chapter highlights a virtuous circle where economic growth and a reduction in corruption attract foreign aid and fund transfers, which in turn lead to growth and reduced corruption. However, this dynamic relationship appears to differ between Sub- Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa, underscoring the influence of divergent economic and political structures. The third chapter focuses on the informal economy, pointing out that remittances and political stability are key factors influencing its size, but with short-term effects. The analyses reveal that fund transfers are possibly geared towards immediate needs rather than long-term investments, a trend observed in various economies, including those of the OECD. These chapters underscore the importance of considering the dynamics between financial transfers, political stability, and both formal and informal economic practices, and how these factors mutually reinforce each other to influence economic development trajectories

Full textGiven the persistence of unemployment, poverty, exclusion and the difficulties encountered when trying to reintegrate the most deprived, the capacity of the French approach to tackle this social and economic « crisis » are put into question. For this reason, a growing number of scholars propose another device, based on a redistribution mechanism of social assistance called « personal basic income ». But, in this case, doesn't the social teaching of the church, which is accused of « missing realism » or « vagueness » when dealing with social and economic issues, have an opportunity to seize given certain philosophical affinities? This is the question we would like to answer in this work. First, in order to deal with this question, we have examined the social teaching of the church as well as its principles regarding social life. Web find this in the encyclical, in several papal discourses as well as in some documents issued by council and bischofsconference. These principles of justice are drawn from the tradition of Social teaching. The first thing to note is that this conception of justice aims at the type of universality which expresses itself in the Law. But, Charity expresses itself in the indifference and generosity of each and everyone. However, charitable action, as it is commonly understood, has a « specific » and « free » character. As a social and ethical principle one needs to institutionalise solidarity because social life is a varied organisation and responds to diverses objectives. Moreover, a solidarity which would not be conceived in a universal manner would just be understood differently in different groups and provoke violent competitive behaviour. As a consequence, solidarity and equality (or impartiality) should not be viewed independently of each other to the extent that it is the task of institutions to establish solidarity and the social order. As far as we are concerned we defend the idea that solidarity and charity are complementary. In the second part of this work, we examined whether the personal basic income, proposed by A. Leroux, as a new distribution scheme aimed to tackle poverty can do justice to this complementarity and to what extent it can be viewed as being compatible with the social teaching of the church. The personal basic income is the same for each and everyone. As such, the only task of a mutual insurance company is to redistribute the basic income among its members as the basic income is not given directly to the person, but to the mutual insurance company she chose to adher to. This device requires a close monitoring through a « proximity relation» which expresses itself in a confidential dialogue, as A. Leroux calls it. In the fight against poverty, the social teaching of the church and the device of the personal basic income may be seen as being connected via the personnalist philosophy of E. Mounier. In addition, the church possesses a solid experience in the social domain and, if implemented, would be able to evaluate of the relevance of this device. The church accompanies charitable acts as well as acts performed out of solidarity in an intelligent way by focusing on the dialogue in relations which can be characterized by proximity. No one doubts that the project of personal basic income is based upon a similar logic, notably where participation and benevolence is essential. Our conclusion highlights some limitations inherent in the personal basic income approach and proposes ways to avoid them, notably this involves going beyond the purely monetary solution in order to account for the deep causes of poverty which are multidimensional. As for the mutual insurance companies, they may become a place where the social link, exchange of knowledge and self-fulfilment can go hand in hand
Emotions and work of personal care of elderly, keeping disgust down, but not too much The work of caregivers assigned to the personal care of elderly residents in institutional facilities is often thought of as “dirty work, ” part of the unrewarding aspects of nursing care, but also, more generally, part of the unrewarding aspects of domestic work which the whole society seems to loathe. This work is delegated to women – and a few men – who must deal with unbearable feelings of disgust and the ethical threat that this represents for “care work” (Molinier, 2005). Using a theoretical framework integrating both moral theory of emotions (Ben Ze'ev, 1997; Miller, 1997; Nussbaum, 2001) and psychodynamics of work (Dejours, 1980c), this thesis examines how caregivers use their creative intelligence (Dejours, 1993b) to deal with the emotional and moral conflict between the disgust they feel and the core values of care work and to preserve themselves from the disgust. If the intelligence of emotions involves elements of emotional conflict and the plasticity of emotions falls within the competence of action, thus work plays a central role in reducing the contradiction inherent in this conflict. Based on structural oppositions of disgust and from human conducts in work situations models, an ad hoc analytical grid was developed to understand how caregivers keep their feelings of disgust away, protecting themselves by adopting an ingenious approach involving subjective distance. This work protects the workers, their coworkers but in the first instance, the elderly residents, from the loathing of disgust and from its contaminating power (Rozin, 1986). Above all, while protecting themselves from disgust, caregivers keep disgust still active, isolating pollution in an object of residual disgust, in order to test the vitality of the work collective. By working in full view of others and exposing how they break with the distance prescribed by the norm of respectfulness, the caregivers appeal to the collective sharing of the risk that breaking this norm implies. Highlighting the ingenuity of care work socially contributes to opening up a space such that the voice of these women, who are striving to build a world that is fit to live in, compensating for the human vulnerability, can be heard. Keywords: emotions at work, disgust, “dirty work”, “care work”, moral risk, emotional conflict, cooperation, gerontology.

Full textThe impact of this PhD work focuses on the social inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWD). This inclusion depends on several initiatives such as spacial and informational accessibility, and the offer of Assistive Products (AP), which can alleviate or compensate disability situations. Our work focuses on this second point, particularly under the dissatisfaction and abandonment of AP by the PWD and the inability of the manufacturers to offer a variety of products that respond to the users’ needs with affordable prices. We believe that the solution to this problem can be found in the AP design process. Thus, we propose a reference model for the a AT design process organization around a philosophy and a design methodology. This model was constructed from bibliographic research on product de-sign processes in general, such as lean design and mass customization, as well as some product design approaches and models that integrate the PWD as customers. After this, the proposal was tested and improved through two case studies carried out in the Personal Mobility context. The first case study focuses on the design of Walking Aid Devices (WADs), such as walking sticks, crutches and walking frames. Second, the second one focuses on the design of non-motorized vehicles (NMVs), such as cycles and wheelchairs. The result of these experiments and the revisions of the reference model for AP design enabled us deliver a configuration of principles and a methodology of design that matches the tangible and intangible expectations of the PWD through the conception and offering of customi-zed products that respond to the requirements of manufacturing and distribution systems
Wessely, Michael. "Fabricating Malleable Interaction-Aware Materials." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SACLS542/document.
Full textPersonal fabrication machines, such as 3D printers, allow casual makers to create custom objects, which may also contain soft, flexible, or shape-changeable parts. Making use of these mechanical properties and developing novel forms of interaction opens up new possibilities for research in Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI). However, embedding sensing and output capabilities into material is still challenging. Although research in materials science has introduced a range of methods for producing interaction-aware materials, these methods require significant domain expertise and often rely on specialized and expensive equipment. My dissertation focuses on casual makers, designers, and HCI researchers, and investigates how to support their design and physical modeling tasks with interactive, non-rigid materials that are stretchable, shape configurable, or cuttable. I explore three directions on how such materials can enhance user interaction, with applications to wearables and ubiquitous computing, DIY product design, and interactive fabrication. First, I introduce a new fabrication method for embedding touch sensing, proximity sensing, and electroluminescent displays into stretchable silicone materials. Based on screen printing, the method allows for rapidly fabricating inexpensive and highly stretchable user interfaces than can be embedded in wearables and other everyday objects. Second, I present an approach for creating interactive paper-folded building blocks that we call Interactive Tangrami. Interactive Tangrami are made of flexible materials such as paper, folded and combined together to form modular 3D structures. They support touch sensing and actuation and can also integrate rigid electrical components, such as LEDs. We use a rapid ink-jet printing technique to apply sensors and circuits on paper. We also offer a software tool that helps makers to design the geometry and interactive behavior of their physical user interfaces and then print them on paper. Third, I introduce a method for fabricating shape-aware material, which is modeling material that captures and streams its own shape while being cut by an artist. The method is based on a novel inkjet-printable sensing technology that can be embedded into a variety of cuttable material such as foam-core. Our software toolkit helps makers produce 2D or 3D shape-aware material and customize its sensing topology for higher sensing accuracy. It also allows them to link the physical model with its digital copy in a 3D CAD environment, such as Blender and Unity. Overall, our approach supports a bi-directional fabrication workflow that combines both physical and digital modeling tools

Full textThis thesis on The Manufacturing of Care in Intensive Care Units aims to show how provision of care for patients requiring highly technical treatment is part of a categorization which is both sociological and anthropological. From a socio-historical approach which aims to retrace how a medical practice of emergency and uncertainty was built up, this involves identifying the professional substructures and the conditions under which the care segment of intensive care has emerged. This approach leads us to question more specifically the evolution of this segment within the framework of the modernization of public hospitals. The standardization undertaken by public authorities invites us to reconsider singular care practices which are grappling with the medical uncertainty resulting from the provision of care to patients whose lives are in danger. These practices are singular in relation to 'emergency routines' which are applied in work supervision, as well as in relation to the patients admitted for treatment. This singularity applies also to the moral behaviour which leads the handling of 'human materials'. The manufacturing of care in intensive care units thus invites us to grasp the socio-anthropological issues which the gradual opening of services to the public reveals a little more each day

Full textRooted in an ethnosociological tradition and from a comprehensive perspective, this thesis is based on the analysis of the conditions of existence of ten men 'homeless' living on the Street outside the channels of assistance for at least a decade. The aim of this thesis was to collect on their place of life, the testimony of these men who feed this paradigm on the great 'exclusion '; same one making them, these " useless to the world " frequently present as human beings «desocialized», reluctant to all social action, under the influence of a psychic pathology explaining their situation of (auto) "exclusion". It was done to try to break these representations to the principle of this " negative individuality ' to understand proponents but especially outs of such lives, and to better show all logic in action in order to survive to their condition of existence subhuman and the effects of decommissioning by the phenomenon of social regression. To do that, and from a methodological point of view, the biographical approach was privileged by adopting the technique of the narrative of repeated life with observations in situ. The peculiarity of the method chosen was to be engaged over time, often over several months, in order to analyze in detail their social trajectories to ultimately discover, despite the uniqueness of people and their life stories, this common form of resistance in the interstices of the social space. Resistance based on identity renegotiation using reminiscences of a past of prior to the drop, well presented in the speech and acts, to let this continuity to be despite the circumstances and this saving constance in itself
