A model program for language/concept enrichment was set up with 22 kindergarten students as participants. A total screening score during routine kindergarten screenings relative to the areas of articulation, language and concepts was low for each of these students, but not low enough to recommend indepth diagnostic testing. The objective of the program was to demonstrate the role of the speech-language pathologist as consultant, an alternate service delivery model for public school speech-language services. Language/concept enrichment was provided by volunteers using four educational software programs for the microcomputer. Concepts taught included quantity, quality, time/sequence, nouns, and verbs. Program structure, implementation, and evaluation are discussed.

The paper addresses the problems involved in setting up a computer-aided expert system for human translators. It postulates four modules which function as an interactive reference guide in the framework of a translator's workstation: (1) a language component containing the syntactic and lexical correspondences between the SL- and TL-systems, (2) the >textual differential between the various types of SL- and TL-discourse, (3) the encyclopedic or knowledge base(s) underlying bi- or multilingual information transfer, and (4) a repertoire enabling the translator to word-process texts written in different languages.Emphasis is laid on the need for empirical research into the data culled from existing translations, parallel and background texts, diverse linguistic and encyclopedic as well as specialist reference works, and from practical experience of highly competent translators.

Learning a foreign language is a challenging endeavor that entails acquiring a wide range of new knowledge including words, grammar, gestures, sounds, etc. Mastering these skills all require extensive practice by the learner and opportunities may not always be available. Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) systems provide non-threatening environments where foreign language skills can be practiced where ever and whenever a student desires. These systems often have several technologies to identify the different types of errors made by a student. This thesis focuses on the problem of identifying mispronunciations made by a foreign language student using a CALL system. We make several assumptions about the nature of the learning activity: it takes place using a dialogue system, it is a task- or game-oriented activity, the student should not be interrupted by the pronunciation feedback system, and that the goal of the feedback system is to identify severe mispronunciations with high reliability. Detecting mispronunciations requires a corpus of speech with human judgements of pronunciation quality. Typical approaches to collecting such a corpus use an expert phonetician to both phonetically transcribe and assign judgements of quality to each phone in a corpus. This is time consuming and expensive. It also places an extra burden on the transcriber. We describe a novel method for obtaining phone level judgements of pronunciation quality by utilizing non-expert, crowd-sourced, word level judgements of pronunciation. Foreign language learners typically exhibit high variation and pronunciation shapes distinct from native speakers that make analysis for mispronunciation difficult. We detail a simple, but effective method for transforming the vowel space of non-native speakers to make mispronunciation detection more robust and accurate. We show that this transformation not only enhances performance on a simple classification task, but also results in distributions that can be better exploited for mispronunciation detection. This transformation of the vowel is exploited to train a mispronunciation detector using a variety of features derived from acoustic model scores and vowel class distributions. We confirm that the transformation technique results in a more robust and accurate identification of mispronunciations than traditional acoustic models.

While the cost of computing hardware has decreased steadily, the cost of software design, development and, maintenance has increased. One approach to reduce the cost of software development is rapid prototyping. Further, it has been proposed to combine the design strategy of rapid prototyping with a computer aided software prototyping system. Such a system would allow the software designer to employ a software base of reusable program modules. It would assist in prototyping and would automate a large part of the development effort. An important component of the automation would be a language translator facility. This translator would allow the designer to develop a software prototype in a high level specification language which would be simple and convenient to use and would translate the specification statements into an executable software language. This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using a language translator by developing a prototype translator for a computer aided software prototyping system. The translator is written in Attribute Grammar (AG) language and translates software specifications stated in the Prototype System Description Language (PSDL) into computer executable code in the Ada language

AbstractWe pursue the vision of an ideal language framework, where programming language designers only need to define the formal syntax and semantics of their languages, and all language tools are automatically generated by the framework. Due to the complexity of such a language framework, it is a big challenge to ensure its trustworthiness and to establish the correctness of the autogenerated language tools. In this paper, we propose an innovative approach based on proof generation. The key idea is to generate proof objects as correctness certificates for each individual task that the language tools conduct, on a case-by-case basis, and use a trustworthy proof checker to check the proof objects. This way, we avoid formally verifying the entire framework, which is practically impossible, and thus can make the language framework both practical and trustworthy. As a first step, we formalize program execution as mathematical proofs and generate their complete proof objects. The experimental result shows that the performance of our proof object generation and proof checking is very promising.

Abstract We propose a novel algorithm to decide the language inclusion between (nondeterministic) Büchi automata, a PSpace-complete problem. Our approach, like others before, leverage a notion of quasiorder to prune the search for a counterexample by discarding candidates which are subsumed by others for the quasiorder. Discarded candidates are guaranteed to not compromise the completeness of the algorithm. The novelty of our work lies in the quasiorder used to discard candidates. We introduce FORQs (family of right quasiorders) that we obtain by adapting the notion of family of right congruences put forward by Maler and Staiger in 1993. We define a FORQ-based inclusion algorithm which we prove correct and instantiate it for a specific FORQ, called the structural FORQ, induced by the Büchi automaton to the right of the inclusion sign. The resulting implementation, called Forklift, scales up better than the state-of-the-art on a variety of benchmarks including benchmarks from program verification and theorem proving for word combinatorics. Abstract Recently, Cheng (1993) introduced the CH programming language. CH is designed to be a superset of ANSI C with all programming features of FORTRAN. Many programming features in CH are specifically designed and implemented for design automation. Handling dual number as a basic built-in data type in the language is one example. Formulas with dual numbers can be translated into CH programming statements as easily as formulas with real and complex numbers. In this paper we will show that both formulation and programming with dual numbers are remarkably simple for analysis of complicated spatial mechanisms within the programming paradigm of CH. With computational capabilities for dual formulas in mind, formulas for analysis of spatial mechanisms are derived differently from those intended for implementation in computer programming languages without dual data type. We will demonstrate some formulation and programming techniques in the programming paradigm of CH through a displacement analysis of the RCRCR five-link spatial mechanism. A CH program that can obtain both numerical and graphical results for complete displacement analysis of the RCRCR mechanism will be presented.

Abstract:
The Geodetic Survey Division of the Canada Centre for Surveying is replacing the National Geodetic Data Base (NGDB) with the National Geodetic Information System (NGIS). For the NGIS to be successful, it was recognized that a sound, well engineered data mode was essential. The methodology chosen to design the data mode! was Nijssen's Information Analysis Methodology (NIAM), a binary modeling technique that is supported by a Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool, PC-IAST. An NGIS prototype has also been developed using Digital Equipment of Canada's Relational Database (Rdb) management system and COGNOS Corporations POWERHOUSE 4th generation language. This paper addresses the need for, and the advantages of using a strong engineering approach to data modeling and describes the use of the NIAM methodology in NGIS development. The paper identifies the relationship between the data mode!, data structures, the design and development of a database and the use of automated tools for systems development. In conclusion, critical success factors for the continuation of the N.G.I.S. developments are identified and the benefits that will accrue are enumerated.

Abstract:
The paper aimed to study the readiness of the existing e-learning environment for the organisation of English-language learning among Ukrainian and international students on the example of a technical university in Ukraine. The need for English-language training was explored by interviewing students with keen interest, level of English proficiency, motivation, preferred forms of learning, and a willingness to incur additional costs for such learning. About two-thirds of those surveyed showed interest in English-language education. About one-third of the students surveyed have the necessary level of preparation and are also prepared for additional financial expenses. About one- third of the students may also join English-language studies if they fulfil specific prerequisites. Expected employment progress is the primary motivation for joining the English-language program. The readiness of the existing learning environment was tested by analysing the organisation of access to English- language teaching materials, assessing the demand for different electronic resources, as well as the ability to take into account the learning styles of potential Ukrainian and international students in the educational process.

Abstract:
The challenge of autonomous off-road operations necessitates a robust understanding of the relationships between remotely sensed terrain data and vehicle performance. The implementation of statistical analyses on large geospatial datasets often requires the transition between multiple software packages that may not be open-source. The lack of a single, modular, and open-source analysis environment can reduce the speed and reliability of an analysis due to an increased number of processing steps. Here we present the capabilities of a workflow, developed in R, to perform a series of spatial and statistical analyses on vehicle and terrain datasets to quantify the relationship between sensor data and vehicle performance in winter conditions. We implemented the R-based workflow on datasets from a large, coordinated field campaign aimed at quantifying the response of military vehicles on snow-covered terrains. This script greatly reduces processing times of these datasets by combining the GIS, data-assimilation and statistical analyses steps into one efficient and modular interface.

Research goals: determine particularities of using cloud services in English communicative competence forming process and develop the model of distance learning system (DLS) and cloud services interaction that improves the quality of the learning process. Research objectives: to identify, describe and develop methodological features of the model of distance learning system and cloud services interaction; consider on the examples the methods of use cloud services in DLS in foreign language training, aimed at English communicative competence forming process of students; experimentally investigate the level of using of cloud services in distance learning and identify ways of improving its use. Object of research: methodical system of foreign language students’ training of language faculties in high institutions. Subject of research: methodological model of the model of distance learning system and cloud services interaction in English communicative competence forming process. Research methods used: review and analysis of scientific publications, psychological, educational and instructional materials, modeling of complex systems, questionnaires, conducting pedagogical experiment. Results of the research. The model of distance learning system and cloud services interaction was developed and the methodological particularities of this interaction are defined. Methods of using cloud services on the example of the distance course “Practical English Course Upper Intermediate” describing the methods of doing the tasks in English communicative competence forming process of language faculties were considered. As a result of experiment it was found there is a low level of use of cloud technologies in distance learning is a consequence of a lack of awareness of teachers in the possibilities of its use. The main conclusions and recommendations: 1) the use of cloud technologies in distance learning of foreign language will improve the quality of training of students of language faculties of high institutions; 2) it is reasonable to conduct work in familiarization and training university lecturers using cloud services in professional and educational activities.

This module, aimed at helping both English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and their students, is the result of a qualitative, applied, transversal and constructivist research conducted with Open Lingua teachers. One of the objectives of said research was to establish the factors that favored and hindered the curriculum integration of open access bilingual dictionaries in that specific EFL context in order to design and implement some pedagogical and didactic initiatives that would foster the effective use of those lexical tools. The present module was a fundamental element within the series of proposals that arose along the research. Its main objective was to provide the teachers with the necessary conceptual knowledge and didactic strategies and resources to teach their students how to use that kind of online dictionary with higher degrees of ease, enjoyment, and efficiency, and, thus, to reduce the frequency of look up errors. This module offers a variety of digital resources, handouts, and hands-on and assessment activities that can greatly facilitate their job when teaching dictionary skills to their students.

Abstract:
This didactic unit is aimed at the fifth semester students of the Business Administration, Marketing and International Business program, who have already completed the four basic levels of the Open Lingua program. This proposal seeks to develop skills and competencies that allow them to perform in different fields related to private, public and solidarity economy companies, and in various mediation and negotiation processes at national and international levels. The instructional design of this unit contains real-life situations, focused on the world of business, that allow students to interact in various types of business events. The grammatical and lexical concepts, necessary to interact successfully in these types of communicative situations, are introduced and applied. The educational activities are designed to offer opportunities to interact in business conferences, international exhibitions, and seminars, among others. The contents are framed in natural and meaningful contexts. This leads to a greater understanding of the type of language used in business and the way it is used to communicate. The contents are structured in three lessons in which the level of complexity of the topics, tasks, texts and transitions (4Ts) have been considered. Also, various types of activities that activate and reinforce previous knowledge and that, subsequently, evaluate the progress of the students, are included.
