Abstract:
The SWOT matrix is the quintessential analysis tool for business purposes, and is taught both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, it is widely understood that the selection of the critical success factors (CSFs) that are included for analysis in the matrix is a very subjective and unstructured process, leaving room for bias and arbitrariness. One way to give a better foundation and support to the analysis results is by utilizing Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) in order to weigh the importance of CSFs in the SWOT matrix and increase reliability of the output. This paper contains the design of a strategy to teach this topic in a marketing planning course, with the addition of a useful technique to overcome the limitations of the tool.

Abstract:
Context. Software evaluation is a research hotspot of both academia and industry. Users as the ultimate beneficiary of software products, their evaluation becomes more and more importance. In the real word, the users’ evaluation outcomes as the reference for end-users selecting products, and for project managers comparing their product with competitive products. A mobile application is a special software, which is facing the same situation. It is necessary to find and test an evaluation method for a mobile application which based on users’ feedback and give more reference for different stakeholders. Objectives. The aim of this thesis is to apply and evaluate AF in mobile application features rating. There are three kinds of people, and three processes are involved in a rating method applying process, rating designers in rating design process, rating providers in the rating process, and end-users in selecting process. Each process has the corresponding research objectives and research questions to test the applicability of AF method and the satisfaction of using AF and using AF rating outcomes. Methods. The research method of this thesis is a mixed method. The thesis combined experiment, questionnaire, and interview to achieve the research aim. The experiment is using for constructing a rating environment to simulate mobile application evaluation in the real world and test the applicability of AF method. Questionnaire as a supporting method utilizing for collecting the ratings from rating providers. And interviews are used for getting the satisfaction feedback of rating providers and end-users. Results. In this thesis, all AF use conditions are met, and AF evaluation system can be built in mobile application features rating. Comparing with existing method rating outcomes, the rating outcomes of AF are correct and complete. Although, the good feelings of end-users using AF rating outcomes to selecting a product, due to the complex rating process and heavy time cost, the satisfaction of rating providers is negative. Conclusions. AF can be used in mobile application features rating. Although there are many obvious advantages likes more scientific features weight, and more rating outcomes for different stakeholders, there are also shortages to improve such as complex rating process, heavy time cost, and bad information presentation. There is no evidence AF can reply the existing rating method in apps stores. However, there is still research value of AF in future work.

Abstract:

Making a decision today is quite important, especially in companies, where the consequences can bring benefits or costs. Sometimes the decisions to be made are complex and we need to evaluate many criterions that can involve several factors. In those cases, it is not easy to have a good overview of all choices and for this reason it is important to have a system that helps us in making complex decisions, when it is not possible to evaluate all the alternatives manually. This thesis describes different algorithms and tools that can aid in the process of making decisions. Based on the review of existing tools a new web based application is proposed. The new tool, Decision Maker, uses both the full Analytical Hierarchical Process approach and Chainwise Paired Comparisons method to evaluate different alternatives.

Abstract:
In marketing one of the most fundamental things when creating a strategy is the decision-making process. The decision-making process is one of the most complex procedures based on personal views when prioritizing the given factors before concluding the best approach. When many factors are included, due to their qualitative nature it is often difficult to evaluate them and their importance in the process because of lack in quantitative weights. The SWOT analysis is one of the most used approaches in the marketing field when making strategic decision. Due to its simple and effective way to collect information about the four main elements (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), it is easy to perceive the market position of the company. However, the lack of quantitative data in this analysis makes the results potentially non consistent. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the SWOT analysis can be improved when is also supported by the AHP model which generates quantitative weights and is prioritizing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the SWOT analysis. This type of combined approach can indicate that the consideration given to some of the factors is more important than others, meaning that when making decisions based on these findings the results can be drastically different and more efficient.

Several transportation problems, as well as problems in other knowledge areas, request decision making. In complex decisions, the choice of best alternative or course of action can contain more than one criterion and it is necessary to study how each alternative affects each criterion. The AHP, Analytic Hierarchy Process, proposed by Thomas L. Saaty, is a multicriteria decision method that works well for very diverse decision types, solving problems with tangible and intangible factors. It gathers the opinion of decision makers in comparison matrices. This study makes a general review of basic concepts of the method, showing different manners of calculating the solution. The first one to be displayed is the exact solution using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrices. For this solution the French software Scilab was used, which is similar to the well-known Matlab, but free and distributed on the web. The issue of judgment consistency is discussed, including ways of measuring and improving it. Finally, a proposal of approximated solution is made, questioning the original idea which says that a certain level of inconsistency is desirable. It is a simplification that, considering absolute consistency, facilitates not only the calculations but also the early work of decision makers when judging the alternatives. Instead of making pair wise comparisons of all alternatives with each other, it becomes necessary to compare only one alternative with the others. The new approximated solution is compared to the real solution in three cases taken from the literature.

It is well known in the academic and practical means that over the last few years the logistics is no longer seen as an operational process and has become recognized as a matter of paramount importance in the integration of supply chains and an important tool to meet customer needs and seek competitive advantage. In a globalized and competitive environment, companies are looking for solutions that can help them achieve their organizational goals. In this context, the outsourcing of logistics services has been widely used for various purposes. However, when performing logistics outsourcing companies are faced with the difficulty of developing mechanisms for evaluating performance that are aligned with company strategy and to assess quantitative and qualitative data to measure and compare the performance of their third party. This paper presents a case study where the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method was used as a support tool for evaluation, ranking and recognition outsourced carriers of a multinational leader in industrial and medical gases market on Brazil. There is a relationship between the end-customer satisfaction and the performance of carriers. Therefore, it is fundamental to develop a tool to measure this performance and recognize the best carrier. The paper proposes the review of carriers through a single index reflecting quantitative and qualitative indicators. The choice of AHP was instrumental in facilitating the structuring of the problem and proved to be an easily understood tool for researchers and for the others involved.

Abstract:
In the eyes of most companies, decision support tools are related to tangible or measurable issues, such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of investment. Such straightforward indicators are the most adopted solutions to show the financial value that each project brings to the company and shareholders. They also check if a project is consistent with the attractiveness rate proposed for the desired growth. However, the investment analysis in many sectors has been taken into account subjective criteria that are not fully measurable by classical economic tools. In the petroleum refining industry the situation is similar because there are governmental, environmental and political factors that influence the decision-making. Therefore, due to the difficulty of expressing the reality in ranking and selecting projects only using traditional tools, this work was developed in order to provide insights on ranking a group of five projects belonging to a large investment portfolio from an oil company. To make such work operational, it was taken into account several criteria that reflect the concerns of the decision makers involved, and it was adopted the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process) as a tool to perform the rank of the projects under a multicriteria analysis. The key finds from such application were that the results reflect the preferences of the decision makers, and show the alignment with strategic goals and the legal requirements as the most relevant criteria, along with the project of diesel quality in the southeast region as the major investment priority at the present time.

Abstract:
While making decisions, consumers are often confronted with choosing between multiple product and brand alternatives that may be viewed as specific bundles of attributes/criteria. Researchers, attempting to understand this decision-making process, employ multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) models in numerous ways for predicting ultimate brand choice. This thesis compares and contrasts four types of MCDM models within a laptop brand choice context—specifically, the Multi Attribute Attitude Model (MAAM; Fishbein 1967), Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP; Saaty, 1980), Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS; Hwang & Yoon, 1981), and a mixed AHP-TOPSIS model (Ghosh, 2011; Bhutia & Phipon,2012). While Fishbein’s MAAM model evaluates brand choice by multiplying attribute belief ratings with their importance weights, the AHP does a pair-wise comparison to elicit relative weights of brand attributes and alternatives. The TOPSIS method, on the other hand, proposes that consumers choose brands that are nearest to (i.e., the shortest distance from) their ideal brand solution as well as the farthest from (i.e., the greatest distance from) their worst solution. Advantages and disadvantages of each of these methods are reviewed, and a mixed AHP-TOPSIS method that addresses some of the drawbacks is proposed here. The results attained via TOPSIS and AHP-TOPSIS are the same. However, it is coincidental in the chosen laptop choice example. By applying the two models within an alternative hotel choice scenario, the rankings obtained are demonstrated as being different. Sensitivity analyses conducted also demonstrate these differences across models. This thesis has both theoretical and practical implications. From a theoretical perspective, it brings the knowledge of decision making methodologies from the supply chain management field to further the understanding of marketing related issues. Furthermore, this research is the first to apply a mixed AHP-TOPSIS model that demonstrates greater accuracy in predicting consumer brand choice. In terms of practical significance, it allows companies to improve the impression that customers hold about its performance on specific attribute types.

"One of the most difficult decisions for the owners of construction projects is to select the contractor. Selecting an inappropriate construction contractor, disputes and not performing may occur. This is often caused by damage to the owners’time, money and even goodwill. In Taiwan, low-cost ethos is flourishing, which results in some construction companies’ failure to survive. Thus, how to screen out potential failure contractors from the bidding process is very important for the project owner. The prequalification of the contractors plays a prominent role in solving this problem.Contractor prequalification is a multi- criterias (includes qualitative and quantitative) standards review process, which total the weighted score for each factor as a judge. However, the weights of the factors are usually suggested by the owners or professionals, they are not getten by a scientific standard process. And, it is often criticized for the prequalification. Therefore, this study will be used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to calculate the weights of the each factors in order to provide a right model for the owners. The global international freight transportation almost dependents on air transport and shipping. However, most of shipping companies used containers for their goods transportation. Container transportation originated in the early eighteenth century, after a long period of development, container transportation is more convenient and faster in loading and unloading, it enhanced the higher economic and convenience for shipping business. To enhance the container carrying capacity and reducing the cost of container transportation, large container ships will be the best policy for container transportation. Also, it means shipping container loading and unloading capacity will be increased in every port. Relatively, the more berthing time it increases, the more berthing fees it costed. In present, “artificial stowage” has been used for various shipping companies, and pre-set cargo plans are used for container ship stowage. Basically, artificial stowage is decided accordance with the Port Captain or Chief officer their self extensive experience. Hence, for more rapid and enhance efficiency on stowage operation. In this study, the expert survey questionnaires were used for establishing the stowage index of container planning, as the reference to enhance the efficiency of container ship stowage. This study, “ships state”, “ships stability” and “shifting cost” these three criteria are used to establish the stowage index for loading and unloading will be more efficiency. The multi-criteria decision making and AHP methods are used to establish the efficiency ranking of stowage index for container stowage planning.

With increasingly competitive global world markets, a lot of companies are under pressure to find ways to cut production and material costs to survive and bear their competitive position in their respective markets. Therefore, supplier selection is very important in production process and business of a company because the cost of a product and most of the companies have to spend a considerable amount of money for purchasing it. Most supplier selection models consider the buyer’s viewpoint and maximize only the buyer’s profit. The thesis applied Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique for supplier selection process. In this research, the author chose 3 main criteria and 14 sub-criteria to evaluate importance level of each criterion in supplier selection process. Following the results, we found that product quality, price/ cost, manufacturing capability are the top three supplier selection problems. Meanwhile, research & development, geographical location, and environment and safety are the least important criteria. The workload of military logistics system has been heavily increased by the continuous reduction of defense budget and personnel. The outsourcing of military aircraft is a policy to introduce commercial company to support maintenance of military facility. The cost to sustain logistics system will be reduced and the internal market will be expanded by outsourcing. However, the monitor mechanism of contract audit is not completed, as a result, military can not handle the contract perfectly. This research develops a performance assessment model of outsourcing management by evaluating the existing outsourcing case to build the assessment basis of commercial aeronautic enterprise. The outsourcing case of 11th Maintenance and Supply Group is studied to evaluate the performance of organization by expert opinions, brain storming and literature review. The decision model of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to analyze 14 criteria of service quality, customer satisfaction and organization effect. The main processes of whole life of weapon system, include plan procurement unit, maintenance management unit and aircraft maintenance unit, are used to allocate the weights of different assessment categories. According to the analysis, the weights of the three categories are customer satisfaction 0.49, service quality 0.347 and organization effect 0.164. Customer satisfaction is the most important factor for military personnel to cooperate with contractors and organization effect receives the least concern. This may be caused by the preventive penalty article of the contract. The organization effect has to be performed well to reach the performance requirement of mission capability and the sampling group does not need to assess the internal operation of the contractor. On the other hand, the workload of contract management will be highly reduced by applying the assessment categoryies to the contract.

Sewer systems are buried underground so that the authorities have difficulties to maintain, monitor, and rehabilitate sewer systems. On the contrast, sewer systems are easy to get cracks and damages because of corrosive wastewater inside sewer and complex surrounding outside sewer. Serious cracks and leaks could result in exceeding the designed rate flow of the sewerage treatment plants due to the infiltration of rain or underground water. Also, the exfoliation of sewerage from detective pipes may cause a potential health hazard with the possible contamination of groundwater and soil. Usually the cost of sewerage rehabilitation is usually immense but under a limit budget. Thus, to set up a priority list of sewerage rehabilitation is necessary. This research is to establish an evaluation model to find out the cost-benefit ratio for each sewer sub-system. First of all, a comprehensive list of affecting factors to sewerage rehabilitation was established by an analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Then, through an expert questionnaire, the weights for all affecting factors can be estimated. By multiplying the all quantitative affecting factors and their weights, an overall score can be obtained for the cost-benefit evaluation. In result, the authorities can set up the strategy for the sewerage rehabilitation by considering both the rehabilitation priority and budget limitation. This evaluation process was applied to a sewerage system in the east Taichung city, Taiwan.

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was developed in the 1970’s by Thomas Saaty, and continues to be a widely used decision-making tool. However, during the process of AHP development, the rank reversal has been thought as a questionable issue. Despite of the solutions offered by Saaty and his supporters, this issue seems not to be settled down satisfactorily in some ways, and let the users feel doubtful of the AHP which has been used widely. In examing this issue, we plan to research about the axioms, the causation of the rank reversal and its solutions offered by Saaty and his supporters (especially the distributive mode, the ideal mode and the absolute measurement), and offer a more reasonable and feasible modified AHP (the two-alternative mode first and the utility measurement in the end) in order to help decision-makers use the AHP correctly and efficiently.

This report is the result of the internship held at Active Space Technologies, S.A., from February 13 to June 20 to obtain a master's degree from the Faculty of Economics University of Coimbra.Potential suppliers’ evaluation has developed throughout these years, allowing that, instead of a single criterion, many more could be added the selection process. With this study, it was possible to evaluate the supplier selection problem applied in a specific case. The main goal is to lower the purchase’s risk and to develop long term relationships with suppliers. Therefore, selecting the right supplier according to organizations’ goals represents a major opportunity on reducing costs. To better contextualize this subject, in this report, a brief literature review is presented involving the suppliers selection problem. Furthermore, some of the most used criteria is identified on this report as well, the advantages and disadvantages of having single and multiple sourcing. The supplier selection problem has been studied extensively, specially in developing several methods that allow to resolve decisions taking into account multiple criteria. In this study, the most appropriate criteria for supplier selection were identified in collaboration with the organization’s decision makers. As such, 5 criteria and 9 sub criteria were defined for that purpose. The application of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) assisted in choosing the best supplier out of the three possible enterprises identified by the organization. At last, a critical analysis about the AHP method is presented, as well as a brief conclusion about this subject.

The use of fossil fuels accompanies advanced technology and convenience of our life, but is proved harmful to the environment. Nowadays, the world starts to address this problem, and thus commit to the development and use of renewable energy. Bio-diesel is common used renewable energy in transport systems. In Taiwan biodiesel is still at early stage and faced some hurdles. Therefore, this study first focuses on the development and future policies of other countries. Then, construct a three-tier hierarchy process by finding factors affecting the biodiesel development in Taiwan in the literature. The first layer is the goal of biodiesel development in Taiwan, and the second tier includes economic, resources, environment, and industrial criteria and followed by 12 sub-criteria. The third tier contains three alternatives B20 below, B20 above or petrochemical diesel. The results show that the environment dimension receives the highest weight and "B20 above" is the chosen alternative. Thus, we conclude that the experts and scholars in Taiwan consider the future development of biodiesel should be towards the goal of over B20.

Owing to the growth of economy and public education, the consumer conscioucenss has been raisen. Medical quality has been paid more and more attention. Hence, the competition between hospitals has been fierce than ever. As we all know, medical management has been a crucial issue to work out effective strategies and refined distributions of rescources for the benefit of business continuity and further development. According to Resource- Based Theory, if hospitals equip core competence and outstanding capability of management, they will stand in an advantaged position. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the core competence of hospitals. This thesis will focus on two hospitals; the medical organizations will be divided into department A, department B, department C, department D, department E, department F and the performance will be divided into financial one and non-financial one. Then, we will use Analytic Hierarchy Process to compare the contributions of financial and non-financial performance in each deparment, drawing core competence matrix to conclude the core competence departments in these two hospitals. Through the analysis of these two hospitals, hopefully, we can provide manifestied directions for hospitals management and systematic tools to evaluate the issues occurred in hospitals. At the end of the thesis, the suggestions for future research are provided.

The main goal of a business is to seek big profits and fast growth under efficient investment. Especially in the electronics industry, organization performance is greatly discussed and emphasized. With the fast product updating speed in the electronics industry, the best allocation with limiting resources to achieve better performance plays an important role. However, although there are many financial indexes to measure business performance, complex calculation and analysis by professional analysts are still needed. For this reason, we develop a business performance evaluation decision support system, which can assist managers in making decision and querying the critical financial information. The system is composed of a database, a knowledgebase and a model base. In order to evaluate business performance, we collect the financial and non-financial indexes based on the past researches and 15 performance indexes for the electronics industry in Taiwan have been selected by using a two-phase AHP survey. Finally, we use practical historical financial and non-financial data as the sample to evaluate enterprise performance and provide suggestions or alternatives for decision making.

Over the last two decades, outsourcing, one of the most important parts in supply chain management, has been considered a key vehicle for firms to narrow their business operations and focus on core competencies. Recently, outsourcing has also been seen as a key source of innovation. In line with this trend, an increasing number of researches have been carried out to aid firms in figuring out the optimal outsourcing service destinations. Unfortunately, most of these studies only emphasized certain specific fields at the company level, so a complete framework in this field has never been done before. This dissertation therefore attempts to address this research gap by constructing an outsourcing hierarchy model based on the concept of the analytic hierarchy process with four levels, namely overall goal, criteria, sub-criteria, and alternative. In here, criteria would include the most concerned attributes such as cost competitiveness, human resources, business environment, and government policies. Each criterion itself would be supported by several-sub criteria. With respect to these criteria, six typical countries in the Southeast Asian region were selected to compare with China and they are known as alternatives. In this dissertation, the author attempts to figure out the best outsourcing service destination among these seven typical outsourcing service countries. In so doing, the author divides this project into two studies labeled as study 1 and study 2. Study 1 adopts the AHP approach with the help of the Expert Choice software to deal with the research problem. Similarly, study 2 is an inheritance of study 1 with the combination of the fuzzy theory and the AHP. After that, a comparison between AHP and Fuzzy-AHP approach are made to see which approach is more acceptable. Theoretically, the higher the priorities weight, the more important the criterion or the alternative would be. As a result, the findings in both studies show that China is the optimal outsourcing service destination. Besides China, other Southeast Asian nations like Vietnam, Thailand, or the Philippines are emerging to be attractive locations. Regarding the main criteria to select such the best country, cost competitiveness is most important attribute. Furthermore, the comparison between the AHP and Fuzzy AHP show some significant differences which allow the dissertation to conclude that the FAHP approach is more suitable to use for the research problem. Generally, this study not only enriches the existing literature, but also provides readers, decision makers, and policy makers a comprehensive view toward the given field.

The prosperous of construction projects in the domestic market and the complicated construction work division are known to be the major causes lead to complexities and uncertainties in the construction processes from procurement to construction stages. The uncertainties, the complexity further lead to the awareness of fair deal among the stakeholders in which it’s eventually escalates into construction dispute. Construction dispute is the common scenario seen in construction projects in which the duration dispute and also the change order dispute are the most common issues. Dispute resolution methods adopted in Taiwan included conciliation, mediation, arbitration and litigation. Owners and contractors whom are the disputants possess different preferences, expectations and development goals made the collective decision-making more complicated and unable to reach to an agreement. These would eventually double the controversy in the construction dispute and it is difficult to resolves in a quick and effective manner. Previous studies on construction dispute focused on the causes of disputes and disputes resolution procedure. Fewer researches focus on which resolution method prefer by disputants and the most preferable decision-making element in construction dispute. Thus, in this study, the objectives of are to identify the disputants’ most preferable dispute resolution method and also to identify the similarities and the differences in the preferred methods and to deal effectively with the dispute. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is capable to analyze multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem effectively while fuzzy theory able to solves human subjective or fuzzy thinking characteristics. Fuzzy AHP (FAHP) adopted as the analysis method with the case study focused on the changes of duration and the change order dispute in a highway construction in Taiwan. The main criteria adopted in this study included time, cost, regulation, and effectiveness. The main criteria are then broke down into 11 sub-criteria. In addition, the controversial causes of such (1) when dispute caused by owner, (2) when dispute caused by contractors, and (3) when nobody are held liable for the cause of dispute, as the additional considerations. Finally, analysis on the “first mediate later arbitrate” is discussed. The key finding shows that both disputants prefer conciliation followed by meditation. However, owner dislikes arbitration and contractor dislike litigation. Results obtained from this study are able to guide future decision-making in dispute resolution.

Abstract The rise of Internet and information technology development has altered the course of global economic activities. This transformation led major banks to modify traditional banking operation and services accordingly. After 1990, Internet improvement brought changes of traditional banking transactions between the customers and banks. It is inevitable for banks to build up and extend the service to Internet banking. The effectiveness and efficiency of Internet banking have made aware of the major banks that this will be in the mainstream of global economic activity. The research of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was proposed by Thomas Saaty in 1971. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has become the most common practice and the foundation of strategic decision making to provide the quantitative measures in different criteria. The main focus of the research was to analyze on-line service functions provided by domestic banks and to examine the operations more in-depth. On-line banking service providers were the primary research targets, which the services have been approved. First round questionnaire and survey was done to identify the key elements of on-line services. The second round of survey was done to gather opinions and conclusions from banking service providers and long-term customers of the on-line banking services. The AHP method was applied to the questionnaire result in this study. Most of the on-line banks provide four main types of services: account service, credit card service, investment service and customer service. The comprehensive analysis will be based on these four main types of services. The analytical assessment will base on overall evaluation of banking services provided by on-line bankers. The conclusion of the research will be drawn based on the strengths and weaknesses of the key service elements provided by all Internet banks in Taiwan. Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, AHP, Network banking.

Abstract In recent years, the topic of “Supplier Selection” (or “Vendor Selection”) in many articles of researches have been conducted to many advanced industries in Taiwan. However there are still few articles mentioned in traditional agriculture industries. This study proposes to apply the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model in dairy farming industry in order to find out the criteria, indices (sub-criteria) and weights of selecting a supplier for dairy cow feed. The objective of this research will be expected to offer the information of marketing strategy improvement base on the criteria. The methodology of this study is a 4-level hierarchy. The main objective for “Dairy Cow Feed Supplier Selection” the top level, criteria and indices are the 2nd and 3rd levels and 4 major alternative suppliers are the bottom level. The hierarchy level proposal is referred to the relevant researches and all of the criteria and indices are determined by a meeting discussion of experts. The weights of all criteria and indices are also done by the questionnaire result. The last step is to determine the final ranking of the alternative suppliers base on the weight-added scores evaluated by the senior managers of some specific supplier. The result shows that “Cost” is the first priority while the dairy farmers selecting a dairy cow feed supplier. “Quality”, “Delivery term and Reputation,” and “Services and Response to compliances” are in order of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th priorities representatively.

Analytic hierarchy process (AHP), proposed by Thomas Saaty in 1971, have already become a common decision technique in the field of decision science. In the development of AHP, the question about group decision aggregation has been discussed. A vast amount of literature has adopted the geometric mean method or the arithmetic mean method in dealing with the group decision aggregation. However, geometric mean methods and arithmetic mean methods are usually subject to the influence of extreme value, and only make use of simple average type of mathematics to combine the decision makers’ suggestions. In this paper, “weight differences”, which denotes the preference degrees among different alternatives for each decision maker, and “preference priorities”, which denotes the rank lists for the alternatives for each decision maker, are both considered to construct the final weights of group members for group decision model. Finally, a comparative analysis is perform to compare the proposed model and the traditional model, and a “satisfaction index” is proposed to indicate the satisfactory level of such a final group decision. An “Expert feedback interviews” investigates the differences between the proposed approach and traditional model which aggregate the decision by the geometric mean method.

Recently explosion of e-commerce technologies is providing the platform for easier communication and collaboration among the entities in the supply chain from suppliers to buyer. The buyer always faces with several suppliers who provide similar services. Then, the buyers should make a decision from the solutions given by several suppliers, select the best supplier from the suppliers/buyer’s combinations, and accept his solutions and negotiation further. In general, successful solution of such services involves the simultaneous consideration of a number of possibly conflicting attributes including both quantitative factors such as cost, quantity and lead-time, and vague qualitative factors such as quality, reputation and performance history. In this thesis, we proposed two parts of describing different types of supply chain. Part A firstly use Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) matches product characteristics with supplier characteristics. Next, agents assist the user in the debate to negotiate a joint representation of the supplier chosen and automatically justify proposals with this joint representation. And a case study in a high-end computer manufacturing company is given to demonstrate the potential of the methodology. It is a bilateral multi-attribute negotiation scheme which sellers/buyer agents in internet-based through negotiations have significant on supplier selection and partners’ profit. In Part B, the one-to-many negotiation scheme we proposed negotiate not only quantitative attributes but also qualitative attributes employed fuzzy logic. We also use AHP to get an integrated network composed by suppliers, retailers and logistic providers. An example of haute couture is applied in negotiation mechanism and members selection used by AHP to demonstrate the agents how to negotiate and reach a integrated supply chain.

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is one of the most commonly used multi-attributes decision analysis techniques, for the reason that its implementation steps are similar to commonly used analysis steps of human beings. It is even more popular in cases that quantitative and qualitative attributes combine, for example: in the areas of strategic decision and risk management. In this study, we set out from the meaning of judgment matrix, point out that its coefficients are perturbed measurement data of a preference structure, and then show that Saaty’s eigenvector method for judgment matrix analysis has the following theoretical weakness: (1) the calculation of eigenvector does not accord with the essence meaning of a judgment matrix; (2) the eigenvector method cannot give a sufficient analysis on the effect of experimental error on the priority vector; (3) its assumption that the perturbation in judgment matrix is small enough, may not hold in practical applications. In addition, this method cannot take the ordering relations of priority weights, found in the practice or from the matrix, into consideration. On contrast, the methods based on statistical regression not only can take these ordering relations into consideration, also have nice properties in the decision theory. Therefore, analyzing the judgment matrix by regression is more proper. Moreover, since the judgment matrix is used to represent a preference structure, it can be replaced by a fuzzy relation. Using the cut sets of the associated fuzzy relation, we define the graphical consistency and the graphical consistency constraints of a judgment matrix, then we consider the theoretical properties of the logarithm least squares method and the goal programming method with the graphical consistency constraints, and compare theses two methods with the most commonly used methods.

Outsourcing is defined as an organizational practice that is evidenced by its advantages and the organizational strategic support that provides. Cost reduction and the focus on quality of products are the most referenced aspects in the literature. Therefore, companies are more aware to the impact that third parties represent in their supply chain, so the competitive position cannot be sustained without a competent supplier base. The market complexity among these features results in a serious and thoughtful approach to supplier selection, which reflects its strategic nature with quantitative and qualitative criteria. Consumer preferences have evolved towards social and environmental responsibility. This context justifies the adoption of multicriteria models because they have provided decision-makers with the best solutions for the complex problems of dealing with several criteria. The literature is well developed in this research area and this is reflected in a significant diversity of methodologies. They are developed to support decision in subcontractor’s selection. However, the methods must meet the reality and needs of the companies. The incorporation of qualitative criteria in Portuguese textile industry is essential because organizations are well strategically established in the market. In this research it is proposed a methodology to select and order subcontractors in the textile industry. The method is based on AHP and was developed using an automated spreadsheet in order to get quickly results. The evaluation criteria were indicated by the company’s management and therefore their requirements are achieved. With this research it is concluded that the study in the area of subcontractor’s selection and evaluation practices is quite advanced and there are various tools developed by the literature. However, smaller companies that turn to the market because of scarcity of resources do not apply subcontractor selection process and mostly incorporate qualitative aspects.

Recommendation system is an important method of solving the problem of information overload. It also helps consumers to save time while searching for goods. Numerous recommendation techniques are proposed. However, they still have to confront some weaknesses such as cold-start, gray sheep and matrix sparsity problems. The purpose of this research is to propose a method to overcome the cold-start problem and recommend a fit item for consumers to improve the personalized service. The proposed method can be applied in the e-commerce websites of exclusive or specialty stores. It is a combination of the product knowledge and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. There are two phases in the proposed method. Phase 1 is to calculate the weight between product attributes and create a candidate product set. Phase 2 is to conduct the recommendation from the candidate set. This research also introduces the implementation experiences by taking the badminton racket recommendation as a case study example.

The radiologists of the Emergency Room have eight hour a shift, three shifts a day,and seven days a week. This research considers not only hard constraints (i.e., government regulation), but also soft constraints (i.e., radiologists’ preference). Hence, the formulated radiologist scheduling problem becomes more flexible and practical. The methodology of this research is to use the fuzzy theory to obtain the appropriate radiologists, construct a multi-objective radiologist scheduling problem, and apply the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to determine the weight of objectives. This study adopts the ILOG software to solve this proposed problem. If the optimal solution is zero, it means that there is no violation against soft constraints. Otherwise, there is at least one violation against soft constraints. Further, this research performs the sensitivity analysis for the number of radiologists. The findings show that hospitals can determine the feasible number of radiologists and obtain their monthly schedule. This study performs the scenario analysis to explore the impact of the vacation constraint on the radiologist schedule. The outcomes show that adding the vacation constraint can generate a fairer radiologist schedule.

Good classroom management is an essential element of smooth teaching activities. Teachers should know the classroom management items, so that they can achieve the balance in the heavy work load, maintain the smoothness of class activities, and ensure the success in teaching. In this study, firstly the main content items of classroom management were generalized by literature review. Then the questionnaire of AHP was constructed according to these content items, and the senior excellent teachers were invited to fill in the questionnaires. The data were processed by AHP equations to obtain the weights and ranking of the classroom management items. The differences between the male and the female teachers were also compared. This study generalized 5 dimensions and 19 main items. All the teachers thought that among the classroom management items, it was most important to “set the class rules and the rewards & punishment systems”, and the least important item was “planning and arrangement of classroom space”. Regardless of gender, all teachers suggested that it was most important to “set the class rules and the rewards & punishment systems”. For the least important item, male teachers pointed out “planning and arrangement of classroom space”, while female teachers indicated “establishment and application of the basic data of students”.

In the 21st century today, with the rising of feminist consciousness, women's employment are rising year by year. In the male-dominated job market, women must face some obstacles and setbacks in their work process. In this study, Fuzzy-AHP the research method explores the promotion of women. With using Fuzzy-AHP, we can find the greatest obstacle between each level of promotion. After reviewing the literature, we can find the main cause of women’s promotion barriers which can be divided into external attribution and internal attribution. To discuss what factors may affect women’s promotion; there are two parts of external attribution that are ideology and career. In the other side, internal attribution also has two parts which are personal capacity and family life. Among the data analysis, career and family life have higher weights than others. It shows that women’s promotion deeply affected by family life and career.

Taiwan International Ports Co., Ltd. was established in 2012 and has 4 ports - Keelung, Taichung, Kaohsiung and Hualien under its jurisdiction. By coordinating and dividing labor internally and consolidating and competing externally, the firm desires to adopt an ERP system to upgrade its information integration ability to connect to the world. As a result, how to choose a suitable ERP system is an important issue. This is because it consolidates systems across all branches, constructs an internal standard operating process (SOP), and raises overall organizational operating efficiency. This study adopted an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to assess procurement and selection items on an ERP system. First, literature review, practical cases and data gathering were utilized to draw up a preliminary framework, including 4 dimensions – “system characteristics”, “consultant/supplier characteristics”, “technical support ability”, and “cost” – and 14 attributes. Then, a questionnaire survey was conducted over consultants, teachers, general companies, specific firms for assessment of criterion weights. Results find that different interviewees have different views on ERP selection. In order to make this study closer to the actual situation, we merged teachers and the specific companies for overall weight assessment. The result shows that “technical support ability” is the most important dimension for ERP system procurement. Besides, among the 14 assessment criteria discussed, “technical transfer and education training” is the most important assessment factor. This suggests that, after the system is introduced, specialists have high expectation for ensuring the company’s subsequent takeover problem. This study’s results can serve as a reference for other state-owned businesses in selecting ERP systems.

In order to study how to improve the political performance of Tao Yuan County, we found that TaoYuan county was combined by twin counties historically in the region development and related documents. Meanwhile, the combination was resulted some uncertainty and unsuitability factors of the county development. After some important infrastruction completion, the south and north regions have developed into different ecology. Tao Yaun County, either in the whole county or Tao Yaun City or Chungli city, is to going to re-position to a capital associated to Taiwan province. The former re-position is never occurred in Taiwan constitution system. The later re-position is good for the specific region, but not good for the whole county to develop in a balance way. However, it is deserved to survey in detail what is good for the political development of Tao Yaun County. According to the questionnaires with three groups of scholars, officials and regional politicians, we use the AHP approach to analyze the opinions of Tao Yuan County separations. We concluded the survey is a good reference document to the government. We found that the questionnaire attendants are concerned about human and finance resources, political activities, government service and political satisfactions of re-position. Most of the attendants believe that Tao Yuan County’s separation will be better than current status. The main consideration is to clarify the political goals, develop the political goals into directions and strategies, and narrow down the region controls to enhance the performance to regions.

Economic globalization and technological advancement have been making a significant impact on consumer behaviors. In the global economy, customers are able to purchase products through various means (e-mail, EDM, MSN, etc.) from various places all over the world. Consequently, the way in which customers make their choices when buying a product is worth pursuing. Researchers have suggested that customers evaluate a product according to its value. Accordingly, great emphasis has been laid on the relationships between the factors of consumers’ product evaluation and the decisions made in purchases. The comparative importance among those factors has been overlooked, if not unaddressed. This study thus aims at filling such a gap and at modeling the hierarchical structure of factors involved in evaluating products of different categories. This thesis consists of three studies. Study 1 sorts out the target products for investigation by means of questionnaires. Study 2, a qualitative research, is a combination of literature review and interview. 8 experts, among whom are scholars, marketing staff and consumers, are interviewed for comments to construct a complete model of product evaluation. Study 3, a quantitative research, investigates the comparative priority of factors for product evaluation by means of questionnaires. A pool of 175 consumers and 34 marketing personnel forms the base for statistical analysis to test if there exists any conceptual discrepancy between consumers and companies. Our research results indicate that consumers are most concerned with the choosing value (e.g. reference group, task definition, budget, etc.), the restrictions (e.g. product knowledge, time pressure), and budget when evaluating the products. In addition, the factors of choosing value and WOM, i.e. word-of-mouth, are found to be significant in three categories of products, i.e. shopping, specialty, and convenience goods. By contrast, ‘warranty’ is concerned the most in evaluating shopping goods and specialty goods, whereas ‘time pressure’ outweighs other factors in evaluating convenience goods. Conceptual discrepancy is founded between consumers and experts—consumers consider the product value from the factors of choosing value, but the experts consider the product value from the factors of providing value (e.g. warranty, price, quality, etc.). The thesis is concluded by acknowledging three limitations faced with the present study and by suggesting three directions for future studies.

Due to the increasing importance of the service industry and the highly competitive environment in the chain business, it is essential for enterprises to develop their own core industrial competitiveness. This study discusses the high-level manager’s competency development model in the chain business from the perspective of competency-based human resource management. This study develops the competency model using a literature review and expert interview and divides the competency model into three major factors including “core competency”, “management competency” and “specialized competency,” and further divides the three factors into 15 sub-factors in order to understand the weight ratio and importance order of the major and sub-factors. This study adopts the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) method to conduct a three-level and four-combination analysis. The study reveals that mid-level managers focus core competency the most in chain service industry competency, whereas high level managers consider that mid-level managers should focus more on professional competency. It is because that there is very competitive in chain service industry development process, with strict requirements for professional competency can improve product and service quality. It usually takes some time for developing chain franchises for a certain scale. If there is lack of profession, it will lead to decline service process and quality and hugely impact the company. High level managers emphasize on “integrity”, “branch management”, and “target execution”, while mid-level managers consider that high level managers should focus on “integrity”, “franchise development”, and “target execution”. It is also shown that there is a disagreement between mid-and high-level managers that whether it is better to do internal branch management or develop franchises. High level managers focus on internal managers while mid-level managers focus on external development. It can be a reference for chain industry recruitment, selection, training middle-high level managers and successor from the next generation by establishing job division, work content, and corresponding competency projects and analysis each task relatively importance level for middle high level managers in chain service industry. Through expert interviews, AHP, and Fuzzy analysis to understand how organizations work in the middle high level managers’ competency contents and provide a reference for companies to introduce the implement of competency development.
