Abstract:
Modulation of afterhyperpolarization (AHP) represents an important mechanism by which excitability of a neuron can be regulated. In the leech brain, sensitization enhances excitability of the S-cell, an interneuron thought to play an important role in this form of nonassociative learning. This increase in excitability is serotonin (5-HT) dependent, but it is not known whether changes in AHP contribute to 5-HT–mediated enhancement of excitability. Therefore electrophysiological recordings and computational modeling were used to determine whether 5-HT enhances excitability via modulation of AHP. 5-HT reduced S-cell AHP and this decrease in the AHP corresponded with an increase in excitability. Little or no AHP is observed in the presence of Ca2+-free saline, suggesting the involvement of Ca2+-dependent K+ channels. Furthermore, AHP amplitude decreased following treatment with drugs (tubocurare and charybdotoxin) that block Ca2+-dependent K+ channel activity. The S-cell also exhibits an afterdepolarization (ADP), which is usually masked by the AHP, and was inhibited by the Na+ channel blocker saxitoxin. A model of the S-cell AHP was constructed using two Ca2+-dependent K+ currents and a Na+-driven ADP current. Reduction of the model conductances underlying the AHP to mimic the effects of 5-HT was sufficient to enhance excitability. These findings were confirmed in occlusion experiments in which pretreatment with tubocurare was able to block 5-HT–mediated decreases in mAHP levels and increases in excitability. These data show that modulation of S-cell AHP can contribute to 5-HT–mediated increases in excitability and that the S-cell afterpotential is due to the combined effects of AHP- and ADP-producing currents.

Decisions always involve the getting the best solution, selecting the suitable experiments, most appropriate judgments, taking the quality results etc., using some techniques. Every decision making can be considered as the choice from the set of alternatives based on a set of criteria. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a multi-criteria decision making and is dealing with decision making problems through pairwise comparisons. This paper is concerned with the moderate AHP decision model is always same as the original AHP decision model. It does not violate the rule itself.

Abstract:
Abstract The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used widely for analyzing decisions made in various real-world applications. Its basic idea is to construct a hierarchy of concepts encountered in a given decision problem and to choose the best alternative according to pairwise comparison matrices given by the decision maker. Under the assumption of fully rational economics, a reasonable decision should be consistent. It becomes an important issue on how to analyze and ensure the consistency of comparison matrices together with the judgments of the decision maker. The main objectives of the present paper are threefold. First, we review the basic idea and methods used to define the consistency and the transitivity of multiplicative reciprocal matrices, additive reciprocal matrices and comparison matrices with fuzzy interval and triangular fuzzy numbers. The existing controversy behind the applications of fuzzy set theory to the AHP in the literature is presented. Second, the consistency of the collective comparison matrices in group decision making based on AHP and fuzzy AHP is further analyzed. We point out that the weak consistency of preference relations with fuzzy numbers in fuzzy AHP and group decision making should be investigated comprehensively. Third, under the consideration of the vagueness in the process of evaluating the judgements, a new concept of fuzzy consistency of comparison matrices in the AHP is given.

Abstract:
The SWOT matrix is the quintessential analysis tool for business purposes, and is taught both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, it is widely understood that the selection of the critical success factors (CSFs) that are included for analysis in the matrix is a very subjective and unstructured process, leaving room for bias and arbitrariness. One way to give a better foundation and support to the analysis results is by utilizing Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) in order to weigh the importance of CSFs in the SWOT matrix and increase reliability of the output. This paper contains the design of a strategy to teach this topic in a marketing planning course, with the addition of a useful technique to overcome the limitations of the tool.

Abstract:
Context. Software evaluation is a research hotspot of both academia and industry. Users as the ultimate beneficiary of software products, their evaluation becomes more and more importance. In the real word, the users’ evaluation outcomes as the reference for end-users selecting products, and for project managers comparing their product with competitive products. A mobile application is a special software, which is facing the same situation. It is necessary to find and test an evaluation method for a mobile application which based on users’ feedback and give more reference for different stakeholders. Objectives. The aim of this thesis is to apply and evaluate AF in mobile application features rating. There are three kinds of people, and three processes are involved in a rating method applying process, rating designers in rating design process, rating providers in the rating process, and end-users in selecting process. Each process has the corresponding research objectives and research questions to test the applicability of AF method and the satisfaction of using AF and using AF rating outcomes. Methods. The research method of this thesis is a mixed method. The thesis combined experiment, questionnaire, and interview to achieve the research aim. The experiment is using for constructing a rating environment to simulate mobile application evaluation in the real world and test the applicability of AF method. Questionnaire as a supporting method utilizing for collecting the ratings from rating providers. And interviews are used for getting the satisfaction feedback of rating providers and end-users. Results. In this thesis, all AF use conditions are met, and AF evaluation system can be built in mobile application features rating. Comparing with existing method rating outcomes, the rating outcomes of AF are correct and complete. Although, the good feelings of end-users using AF rating outcomes to selecting a product, due to the complex rating process and heavy time cost, the satisfaction of rating providers is negative. Conclusions. AF can be used in mobile application features rating. Although there are many obvious advantages likes more scientific features weight, and more rating outcomes for different stakeholders, there are also shortages to improve such as complex rating process, heavy time cost, and bad information presentation. There is no evidence AF can reply the existing rating method in apps stores. However, there is still research value of AF in future work.

Abstract:

Making a decision today is quite important, especially in companies, where the consequences can bring benefits or costs. Sometimes the decisions to be made are complex and we need to evaluate many criterions that can involve several factors. In those cases, it is not easy to have a good overview of all choices and for this reason it is important to have a system that helps us in making complex decisions, when it is not possible to evaluate all the alternatives manually. This thesis describes different algorithms and tools that can aid in the process of making decisions. Based on the review of existing tools a new web based application is proposed. The new tool, Decision Maker, uses both the full Analytical Hierarchical Process approach and Chainwise Paired Comparisons method to evaluate different alternatives.

Abstract:
In marketing one of the most fundamental things when creating a strategy is the decision-making process. The decision-making process is one of the most complex procedures based on personal views when prioritizing the given factors before concluding the best approach. When many factors are included, due to their qualitative nature it is often difficult to evaluate them and their importance in the process because of lack in quantitative weights. The SWOT analysis is one of the most used approaches in the marketing field when making strategic decision. Due to its simple and effective way to collect information about the four main elements (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), it is easy to perceive the market position of the company. However, the lack of quantitative data in this analysis makes the results potentially non consistent. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the SWOT analysis can be improved when is also supported by the AHP model which generates quantitative weights and is prioritizing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the SWOT analysis. This type of combined approach can indicate that the consideration given to some of the factors is more important than others, meaning that when making decisions based on these findings the results can be drastically different and more efficient.

Several transportation problems, as well as problems in other knowledge areas, request decision making. In complex decisions, the choice of best alternative or course of action can contain more than one criterion and it is necessary to study how each alternative affects each criterion. The AHP, Analytic Hierarchy Process, proposed by Thomas L. Saaty, is a multicriteria decision method that works well for very diverse decision types, solving problems with tangible and intangible factors. It gathers the opinion of decision makers in comparison matrices. This study makes a general review of basic concepts of the method, showing different manners of calculating the solution. The first one to be displayed is the exact solution using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrices. For this solution the French software Scilab was used, which is similar to the well-known Matlab, but free and distributed on the web. The issue of judgment consistency is discussed, including ways of measuring and improving it. Finally, a proposal of approximated solution is made, questioning the original idea which says that a certain level of inconsistency is desirable. It is a simplification that, considering absolute consistency, facilitates not only the calculations but also the early work of decision makers when judging the alternatives. Instead of making pair wise comparisons of all alternatives with each other, it becomes necessary to compare only one alternative with the others. The new approximated solution is compared to the real solution in three cases taken from the literature.

It is well known in the academic and practical means that over the last few years the logistics is no longer seen as an operational process and has become recognized as a matter of paramount importance in the integration of supply chains and an important tool to meet customer needs and seek competitive advantage. In a globalized and competitive environment, companies are looking for solutions that can help them achieve their organizational goals. In this context, the outsourcing of logistics services has been widely used for various purposes. However, when performing logistics outsourcing companies are faced with the difficulty of developing mechanisms for evaluating performance that are aligned with company strategy and to assess quantitative and qualitative data to measure and compare the performance of their third party. This paper presents a case study where the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method was used as a support tool for evaluation, ranking and recognition outsourced carriers of a multinational leader in industrial and medical gases market on Brazil. There is a relationship between the end-customer satisfaction and the performance of carriers. Therefore, it is fundamental to develop a tool to measure this performance and recognize the best carrier. The paper proposes the review of carriers through a single index reflecting quantitative and qualitative indicators. The choice of AHP was instrumental in facilitating the structuring of the problem and proved to be an easily understood tool for researchers and for the others involved.

Abstract:
In the eyes of most companies, decision support tools are related to tangible or measurable issues, such as Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of investment. Such straightforward indicators are the most adopted solutions to show the financial value that each project brings to the company and shareholders. They also check if a project is consistent with the attractiveness rate proposed for the desired growth. However, the investment analysis in many sectors has been taken into account subjective criteria that are not fully measurable by classical economic tools. In the petroleum refining industry the situation is similar because there are governmental, environmental and political factors that influence the decision-making. Therefore, due to the difficulty of expressing the reality in ranking and selecting projects only using traditional tools, this work was developed in order to provide insights on ranking a group of five projects belonging to a large investment portfolio from an oil company. To make such work operational, it was taken into account several criteria that reflect the concerns of the decision makers involved, and it was adopted the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process) as a tool to perform the rank of the projects under a multicriteria analysis. The key finds from such application were that the results reflect the preferences of the decision makers, and show the alignment with strategic goals and the legal requirements as the most relevant criteria, along with the project of diesel quality in the southeast region as the major investment priority at the present time.

Abstract:
While making decisions, consumers are often confronted with choosing between multiple product and brand alternatives that may be viewed as specific bundles of attributes/criteria. Researchers, attempting to understand this decision-making process, employ multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) models in numerous ways for predicting ultimate brand choice. This thesis compares and contrasts four types of MCDM models within a laptop brand choice context—specifically, the Multi Attribute Attitude Model (MAAM; Fishbein 1967), Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP; Saaty, 1980), Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS; Hwang & Yoon, 1981), and a mixed AHP-TOPSIS model (Ghosh, 2011; Bhutia & Phipon,2012). While Fishbein’s MAAM model evaluates brand choice by multiplying attribute belief ratings with their importance weights, the AHP does a pair-wise comparison to elicit relative weights of brand attributes and alternatives. The TOPSIS method, on the other hand, proposes that consumers choose brands that are nearest to (i.e., the shortest distance from) their ideal brand solution as well as the farthest from (i.e., the greatest distance from) their worst solution. Advantages and disadvantages of each of these methods are reviewed, and a mixed AHP-TOPSIS method that addresses some of the drawbacks is proposed here. The results attained via TOPSIS and AHP-TOPSIS are the same. However, it is coincidental in the chosen laptop choice example. By applying the two models within an alternative hotel choice scenario, the rankings obtained are demonstrated as being different. Sensitivity analyses conducted also demonstrate these differences across models. This thesis has both theoretical and practical implications. From a theoretical perspective, it brings the knowledge of decision making methodologies from the supply chain management field to further the understanding of marketing related issues. Furthermore, this research is the first to apply a mixed AHP-TOPSIS model that demonstrates greater accuracy in predicting consumer brand choice. In terms of practical significance, it allows companies to improve the impression that customers hold about its performance on specific attribute types.

GAFNER, STEFAN. Ginkgo Leaf Extract Laboratory Guidance Document. ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.59520/bapp.lgd/zuyx3621.

Full text
Abstract:
Adulteration of ginkgo leaf extracts with extracts from flavonol-rich extracts from sources such as Japanese sophora is well documented in the literature. The partial or complete substitution of ginkgo extracts with flavonol-rich ingredients, or highly purified flavonoids (e.g., quercetin or rutin) from other sources (Table 1) was documented as early as 2003, and has been evidenced in over 20 peer-reviewed publications since. This Laboratory Guidance Document (LGD) presents a review of the various analytical methods used to differentiate between authentic ginkgo leaf extracts and ingredients containing adulterating materials. This document can be used in conjunction with the Ginkgo biloba leaf extract Botanical Adulterants Prevention Bulletin published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program in 2018 and the AHP Ginkgo Monograph and Therapeutic Compendium.

Full text
Abstract:
The PMAY (BLC+ISSR/AHP) scheme has significantly impacted the lifestyle of the beneficiaries. It has changed the beneficiary’s lifestyle and created an identity in the society, where their kids started going to schools regularly and can study in the evenings under descent lighting. Especially in the ISSR/AHP projects, where majority of the households are in the EWS category, do not need to worry about their seasonal floodings into their houses during monsoons, access to water supply and sanitation inside their houses and a gate outside their house and settlement. This process assisted with NGOs and other civic society bodies have streamlined them with respect to formal housing and documentations for having ownership of incrementality in socio-economic ladder. Whereas the BLC projects were mostly opted by the beneficiaries from tribal community who have small piece of land in the periphery of the cities.

Abstract:
Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) dietary supplements, including standardized or partially purified extracts with high concentrations of curcumin, have enjoyed sustained sales growth in the United States over the past 5-6 years, while turmeric powder continues to be an important spice, flavor, and colorant in many regions of the world. There is considerable evidence that both powdered root and rhizome, as well as root and rhizome extracts, have been subjected to adulteration. This document should be viewed in relation to the corresponding Botanical Adulterants Prevention Bulletin on turmeric published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program.

Abstract:
Cranberry remains one of the most popular of the ‘healthy’ fruits, with an array of extract products appearing in the botanical dietary supplement markets and a large number of juice products in the beverage industry. There is considerable evidence that both, but especially the extract-based product categories have been subjected to adulteration. This Laboratory Guidance Document is intended to review the analytical technologies used to determine whether cranberry extract products are authentic and, if not, to identify the adulterants involved. This document should be viewed in conjunction with the corresponding Botanical Adulterants Bulletin on Cranberry published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program.

GAFNER, STEFAN, and Ashley Dowell. Tea Tree Oil Laboratory Guidance Document. ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program, October 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.59520/bapp.lgd/ldfd8529.

Full text
Abstract:
Tea tree oil (TTO) is the essential oil of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia or M. linariifolia, Myrtaceae). Adulteration of TTO has become more apparent in recent years. Adulteration occurs with single essential oil components (e.g., sabinene from pine oil), waste products derived from other essential oils such as pine (Pinus spp., Pinaceae), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus and other Eucalyptus spp., Myrtaceae), and camphor (Cinnamomum camphora, Lauraceae) oils, or with essential oils from other Melaleuca species and the closely related genus Leptospermum. This Laboratory Guidance Document presents a review of the various analytical technologies used to differentiate between authentic tea tree oil and essential oils containing adulterating materials. This document can be used in conjunction with the Tea Tree Oil Botanical Adulterants Bulletin published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program in 2017.

GAFNER, STEFAN. Saw Palmetto Extract Laboratory Guidance Document. ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program, September 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.59520/bapp.lgd/qndh7158.

Full text
Abstract:
There is documented evidence of the adulteration of saw palmetto fruit extracts with a number of vegetable oils, such as canola (Brassica napus ssp. napus, Brassicaceae), coconut (Cocos nucifera, Arecaceae), olive (Olea europaea, Oleaceae), palm (Elaeis guineensis, Arecaceae), peanut (Arachis hypogaea, Fabaceae), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus, Asteraceae) oils. The partial or complete substitution of saw palmetto fruit extracts with mixtures of fatty acids of animal origin was first documented in 2018, and seems particularly common in materials sold as saw palmetto originating from China. This Laboratory Guidance Document (LGD) presents a review of the various analytical technologies used to differentiate between authentic saw palmetto extracts and ingredients containing adulterating materials. This document can be used in conjunction with the Saw Palmetto Botanical Adulterants Bulletin, rev. 3, published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program in 2018.
