Abstract:
Through this curriculum study, I explored the application of ideas found within contemporary art education to a course of traditional secondary art history. These contemporary art education ideas included: visual culture instruction, interdisciplinary instruction, contemporary art instruction, curriculum development, the use of enduring ideas, and the inclusion of a variety of perspectives based on gender and ethnicity. Through these art education ideas, a new curriculum was formed, that pushed both the students and the teacher toward a more inclusive art history course that made real connections for students and allowed students to be active members in their own learning. Instruction shifted away from lecture and became more dialogue and discussion oriented. Unit examples are included for Romanticism, Dadaism, and American Social Realism.

Franssen, Trijsje Marie. "Prometheus through the ages." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15889.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the role and significance of the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus in Western philosophy from Antiquity to today. Paying particular attention to its moral and existential meanings, an analysis of this in-depth investigation produces an overview of the exceptional array of the myth’s functions and themes. It demonstrates that the most significant functions of the Prometheus myth are its social, epistemic, ontological and moral functions and that the myth’s most significant themes are fire, rebellion, creation, human nature and ambiguity. The dissertation argues that this analysis brings to light meaningful information on two sides of a reference to the Prometheus myth: it reveals the nature, functions, themes and connotations of the myth, while information about these functions and themes provides access to fundamental meanings, moral statements and ontological concepts of the studied author. Based on its findings this work claims that, as in history, first, the Prometheus myth will still be meaningful in philosophy today; and second, that the analysis of the myth’s functions and themes will provide access to essential ideas underlying contemporary references to the myth. To prove the validity of these claims this thesis examines the contemporary debate on ‘human enhancement’. Advocates as well as opponents of enhancement make use of the Prometheus myth in order to support their arguments. Employing the acquired knowledge about the myth’s functions and themes, the dissertation analyses the references encountered. The results of this analysis confirm that the Prometheus myth still has a significant role in a contemporary philosophical context. They improve our understanding of the philosophical argument, ontological framework and ethics of the debate’s participants; and thus demonstrate that the information about the Prometheus myth acquired in this thesis is a useful means to reveal fundamental ideas and conceptualisations underlying contemporary (and possibly future) references to the myth.

Erdem, Rengin. "Ag2s/2-mpa Quantum Dots." Master's thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614384/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Quantum dots are fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals that have unique optical properties such as high quantum yield and photostability. These nanoparticles are superior to organic dyes and fluorescent proteins in many aspects and therefore show great potential for both in vivo and in vitro imaging and drug delivery applications. However, cytototoxicity is still one of the major problems associated with their biological applications. The aim of this study is in vitro characterization and assessment of biological application potential of a novel silver sulfide quantum dot coated with mercaptopropionic acid (2-MPA). In vitro studies reported in this work were conducted on a mouse fibroblast cell line (NIH/3T3) treated with Ag2S/2-MPA quantum dots in 10-600 &mu
g/mL concentration range for 24 h. Various fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy methods were used to determine metabolic activity, proliferation rate and apoptotic fraction of QD-treated cells as well as QD internalization efficiency and intracellular localization. Metabolic activity and proliferation rate of the QD treated cells were measured with XTT and CyQUANT®
cell proliferation assays, respectively. Intracellular localization and qualitative uptake studies were conducted using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Apoptosis studies were performed with Annexin V assay. Finally, we also conducted a quantitative uptake assay to determine internalization efficiency of the silver sulfide particles. Correlated metabolic activity and proliferation assay results indicate that Ag2S/2-MPA quantum dots are highly cytocompatible with no significant toxicity up to 600 &mu
g/mL treatment. Optimal cell imaging concentration was determined as 200 &mu
g/mL. Particles displayed a punctuated cytoplasmic distribution indicating to endosomal entrapment. In vitro characterization studies reported in this study indicate that Ag2S/2-MPA quantum dots have great biological application potential due to their excellent spectral and cytocompatibility properties. Near-infrared emission of silver sulfide quantum dots provides a major advantage in imaging since signal interference from the cells (autofluorescence) which is a typical problem in microscopic studies is minimum in this part of the emission spectrum. The results of this study are presented in an article which was accepted by Journal of Materials Chemistry. DOI: 10.1039/C2JM31959D.

Taylor, Rhys. "Virgo Cluster through the AGES." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54997/.

Full text
Abstract:
The results of the deep HI survey AGES are presented for two regions in the Virgo Cluster. Covering a total of 15 square degrees to a sensitivity of 0.6 mJy/beam, 73 objects are detected within the cluster, with 109 detections in the background. A new automatic extractor is described which gives greater completeness and reliability than previous methods. The majority of the cluster detections are associated with galaxies previously identified in the optical Virgo Cluster Catalogue, but nearly 30% of the cluster detections are new objects below the VCC completeness limit. Their optical and HI characteristics are described. No definite optically dark galaxies are identified, however 4 intriguing candidates are reported. All have possible optical counterparts but these are extremely faint, and their HI velocity widths appear inconsistent for such objects when compared to the more certain associations. The likelyhood that these are really dark galaxies is discussed, but further observations are required for a more definitive analysis. Cluster galaxies are found to be significantly HI deficient but it is not clear where their missing gas has gone. An automated algorithm is described to try to recover faint extended HI features, but no detections are made. The HI may be ionised by the intracluster medium or the sensitivity of the survey insufficient - the relative merits of these views are assessed. A small fraction (10%) of the early-type galaxies identified in the VCC are detected in HI. Evidence that some of these are morphologically evolving via gas loss, while others are recent additions to the cluster as yet unaffected by their new environment, is discussed. I also compare and contrast the two separate areas studied, describe the cluster's HI mass-function from AGES and other surveys, and discuss the overall influence of the cluster environment on galaxy properties.

Angus, Ruth. "Stellar ages and stellar rotation." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:07f78624-adfe-4775-9d3e-dbc63636156a.

Abstract:
Stellar ages will play a big role in the next generation of astronomy. Useful to exoplaneteers and galactic archaeologists alike, this relatively under-exploited stellar property is currently limited by the precision of dating techniques. The work presented in this thesis contributes incrementally to a greater understanding of rotation period decay in Main Sequence (MS) stars as a proxy for stellar age. Inferring stellar ages from rotation periods, 'gyrochronology', is the only dating method with the potential to provide ages for stars on the hundreds-of-thousands scale. Unfortunately however, it suffers from being poorly calibrated as the sample of cool, MS stars with precise ages is extremely sparse. Using light curves of spotted, rotating, MS, FGK stars with asteroseismic ages from the Kepler spacecraft, I attempted to recalibrate the relation between rotation period, colour and age. I demonstrate that the simple, 'straight line' gyrochronology relations used in the past are unable to explain the new asteroseismic sample. Questions are raised about the power of gyrochronology---does it accurately predict ages for old stars? To fully answer this question, it will be necessary to exploit new data from the K2 (the repurposed Kepler mission). K2 has observed (and is still observing) several open clusters and asteroseismic field stars which may provide new insight into stellar rotational evolution. Unfortunately, systematic features in K2 light curves produced by Kepler's reduced pointing precision inhibit the detection of astrophysical signals in the data. These systematic features can be removed by modelling and subtracting them from the time series, 'detrending', but this process can remove some signals and can even inject noise. For this reason I developed a method for detecting periodic signals in K2 light curves without detrending: the Systematics-Insensitive Periodogram (SIP). This method is particularly useful for red giant asteroseismology. Precise ages can be inferred for oscillating red giants using the SIP and will be useful for galactic archaeology and open cluster age inference. In the next chapter of this thesis I return to the problem of stellar rotation period inference. Current methods for rotation period inference can produce inaccurate, imprecise periods with poorly approximated uncertainties and often without uncertainties altogether. I present a new method for inferring precise, accurate, probabilistic rotation periods with accurate uncertainties using Gaussian processes. Although expensive to compute, this method is ideal for applying to individual targets. I hope to continue to develop this method and apply it to a large ensemble light curves from Kepler and other photometric surveys in the future. Star spots and acoustic (p-mode) oscillations are not the only mechanisms that produce variability in dwarfs and giants. A combination of asteroseismic pulsations and granulation on the stellar surface produces variability on short timescales. It has been shown that the amplitude of this short-term variability, called 'flicker' is strongly correlated with both surface gravity and stellar density (Bastien et al., 2013, Bastien et al., 2016, Kipping et al., 2014). However, there is substantial additional scatter in these relations that is not accounted for by the observational uncertainties. I provide a new calibration of these relations which models this level of additional, astrophysical variance using hierarchical probabilistic inference. In the final chapter of this thesis I explore rotation period recovery with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). With its ten year baseline, LSST light curves will be sensitive to long rotation periods which are characteristic of old and low-mass stars. If the rotation periods of such stars can be measured from LSST light curves, it may be possible to improve the gyrochronology relations. We find that LSST is most sensitive to rotation periods between 10 and 20 days. Its sensitivity falls at short periods due to the sparsity of its sampling and at longer periods due to the lower amplitudes of variability and smaller apparent magnitudes of slow rotators.

Abstract:

This paper has been written with the intention to examine whether there are differences inleadership styles among managers belonging to different generations. Studies conductedduring the first semester 2009, and the generations that was studied on in the survey belongedto the 50th and 70th generation. This is because it may be of interest to shed light on possibledifferences in managers' behavior, depending on their generation. The survey is undertaken by a non-probability sample and focused on making a subjectiveselection of respondents. Interviews are conducted with the help of deep questions and therespondents to this report were selected in five different companies and in total there are tenwho participated. This report is based on the comparisons, then immerse themselves in thevarious theoretical ideas around leadership and compared with what the leaders are talkingabout during the interviews. It has drawn conclusions from the theories for the very purposeto see if there are any differences between the various managers. The investigation has resulted in that the people from the 70th generation could more closelybe connected with a small detail-driven leadership theory and the vision that managers haveon employees is that they have the capacity to control and manage their own work. The peolple from the 50th generation are more tuned in to the theory of the trans-formativeleadership especially to the fourth cornerstone in the theory. That states that a leader isdistinguished by being constantly available for consultation and is responsive to employeeneeds. In conclusion, the investigation revealed that both groups at a general interpretation see theresult and the staff as a reciprocal relationship. At a more thorough analysis, the authorsconcluded that the people from the 50th generation had a little higher priority on results thanon the staff.

Abstract:
In the Middle Ages the main attention was paid to the translations in the field of mathematics, medicine, astronomy, astrology, because Europe remains relatively poor in its scientific achievements. In the period of Middle Ages the universal Latin was replaced by Spanish. The city Toledo took the lead in the matter of translation achievements. It was the Spanish translators, who with the help of King Alfonso X in XII century introduced their own cultural tradition, the so-called "Toledo School" which opened the world culture for Europe. "Toledo School" has an outstanding role in the habituation of medieval Europe with the scientific and philosophical achievements of previous civilizations. The translators of Toledo significantly influenced the formation of Western scientific worldview. It is thanks to Averroes and Avicenna Europe discovered Aristotle and Plato. All this created the basis for the establishment of the first universities here.

Abstract:
The dissertation is an investigation of the Swedish engineering company AGA’s inventive activity during the years 1904-1959. Inventive activity denotes the company’s efforts in rying to develop innovations. Operations such as patents, experiments, business methods, business co-operations, technical development and other related activities have been studied. Through its lighting system for beacons, which emanated from the international gas industry, AGA had a strong economic base, and could thus go through periods of strong diversification. This led to the growth of more branches on the company’s product tree, and the aim of this dissertation has been to map out and understand how this AGA tree developed. One point of departure for this study has been to investigate how the inventive activity at AGA reacted to changes in the demand side of the economy. According to the American economist Jacob Schmookler the demand determines the development of innovative activity. The American economic historian Nathan Rosenberg has criticised Schmookler, however, arguing that it is the resources of knowledge which dictate the innovative course, since technology transfers are costly to put into economic practice. A third perspective, partly bridging these differences of opinions, is the discussion on the influence of technology procurement, which, among others, the Swedish innovation researcher Charles Edquist has presented. These perspectives frame my study, which maps AGA through two major changes in technology during the first half of the twentieth century. The AGA product tree consists of path dependent shifts in technology; possibilities to develop new technology opened up in the interaction between the company and the market. Among other things, the main innovation, the AGA flasher, originally developed for the lighting in beacons, proved to be functional for railway signalling devices and respirators. Through general market changes outside the company, similar opportunities arose for AGA to develop already existing technique for new markets. During the period of research the inventive activity was characterized by a constant experimenting, where the company’s success to a large extent rested on the engineers’ ingenuity. AGA, being product diversified, had little room to act independently on the market. Thus, to a high degree the company had to adjust its inventive activity to market demand. By cooperating with initiated customers, above all public ones, AGA had the opportunity to continuously develop products in demand, despite limited resources.

Abstract:
Modern construction techniques enable reinforced concrete structures to be constructed in a very short time. The loads occurring due to the construction process on the partially completed structure can be larger than the design service load. The available strength of the immature partially completed structure is dependent upon the available concrete strength which may be less than the specified strength. Failure would occur if the available strength is less than that required to support the construction loads. The construction loads can also cause significant immediate deflection due to concrete cracking and its low early age modulus of elasticity. Because of the high applied stress/developed strength ratio and shrinkage, the time dependent deflection may be unacceptably large. This thesis examines the early age behaviors of concrete tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, concrete shrinkage and creep, and develops prediction equations which are demonstrated to be more appropriate than the current code equations.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to describe the evolution of knowledge and representation of an animal – elephant – from Antiquity to the Middle Ages up to the 13th century in the West and to demonstrate continuity and changes, from one civilization to another, especially in its visual representations. We tried to introduce the fruits of contemporary study of philosophical and ethical thought on the animal and its relationship with man, represented especially by Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben. The study therefore, discusses not only the relationship between man and the elephant, but also includes a consideration of the attitude of man toward the animal in general, a theme discussed already by Philon and Plutarch. The study takes a similar approach with the study on the monster which became more popular after the 1980s. Study of the monster raises questions on the relationship between "ourselves" and "the others" and on the boundary between them. The relation between "us human beings" and "monsters" can be projected on the relation between "us human beings" and "the animals except men". In Judaism and Christianity, man is created in the image of God and placed at the pinnacle of the hierarchy of the creatures. He is allowed by God to exercise dominion over other animals (and to eat them). Domination of other peoples (including monstrous races) is justified by the idea that other peoples lack reason just as animals lack it. Because of its huge size, peculiar appearance, and remarkable intelligence, the elephant is one of the most surprising pieces of the evidence of God's marvellous Creation. That is why scenes of the "creation of the animals", "Adam naming animals" and Noah's Ark often included the elephant. In particular, the elephant's trunk was praised as a mystery of creation from the time of Aristotle and Pliny. However, the elephant was often considered half animal, half monster, and in consequence "other" par excellence. It is illustrated on the Souvigny Pillar with monsters and monstrous races. Therefore, the elephant was used sometimes as a symbol of "appropriation" of other peoples and their culture by Europeans, as in portraits of Alexander the Great and the Diadokoi wearing exuviae elephantis, head dresses made from elephant's scalp. To analyse visual images, we took into consideration various factors that form an image, such as artists' scientific knowledge of the animal, influence from the words (written or pronounced), use of model books, transmission of iconography among itinerant artists and ateliers, and the imagination of artists and programme makers who tend to fill any lack of information by knowledge of other animals, etc. Minute observation on some details of the visual representation of the elephant helped to reveal some aspects of the inter-relationship of various factors, especially between text and image.

Auld, Robbie Richard. "Search for dark galaxies through the ages." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2007. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54594/.

Abstract:
The work I have performed for this thesis covers a number of different areas of astronomy. My work on the LSBs is an in-depth exploration of the gas morphology and kinematics of these unusual objects. The focus is on the star forming abilities of the galaxy sample, but the HI observations also reveal a rich variety of gas morphology and motion, which are not necessarily apparent at other wavelengths. As well as being LSB, they are neutral gas-rich objects. As such they are more suited to being detected by HI surveys than by optical surveys. The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) is a survey that expects to detect a large number of this type of galaxy and a large proportion of the thesis has been dedicated to my involvement with the survey. This has included designing and implementing the observing strategy, testing the data reduction pipeline, producing the final data, testing their quality and examining the efficiency of the survey detection methods. I have demonstrated some uses the AGES data can be put to from discovering hitherto undetected galaxies, through measuring the cosmic distribution of neutral hydrogen, to evaluating the cosmic significance of dark galaxies. The last point forms the central theme throughout the thesis. Of the 69 detections made by AGES in the first two datacubes, 55 do not have previous Hi measurements and 26 are previously uncatalogued. An Hi mass function (HIMF) was produced from the first galaxies detected by AGES. The best fit line to the data was a Schechter function with the parameters: a = -1.28 0.17, = 0.0076 0.0027 and M* = 7.7 1.8 x 109 M0. Using the HIMF the calculated value for the space density of neutral hydrogen was found to be pni = 7.5q3 x 107MQ Mpc-3, which is consistent with previous measurements. The overall contribution of HI to the Universal energy density was calculated from this value and found to be Qhi = 4.1 J x 10-4, confirming previous measurements of this value. Assuming the two candidates are indeed optically dark, based on this value the contribution of dark galaxies was calculated to be 4% to their respective mass bins, and less than 0.5% overall. The number density was found to be ndark 6.6 x 10-4 Mpc-3. Hence it would appear that dark galaxies are not numerous enough nor of substantial mass to be able to account for the 'missing mass' or to be able to fully represent the high number of dark matter haloes produced by CDM simulations.

The T-AGOS class 3 and 4 ships are under consideration by the United States Air Force for use as sea-based radar platforms. In order to meet mission requirements, their roll motion must be reduced. Several roll damping methods appropriate for this class of ships are considered. Bilge keel stabilization is studied in more detail and various sized bilge keels are analyzed, utilizing a seakeeping prediction program, for the full range of ship speed and sea states. Operability indices at several roll angles and for various bilge keel shapes are developed and compared. Design considerations based on the above studies are made.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis provides definitive versions of the poems of Mu iris 6 Gormain, an Ulster poet of the Eighteenth Century. Parallel translations afford the English- language leader an opportunity to apprehend the texts as well as elucidating the meaning of sections of the poems which some Irish-language readers may find difficult. In the textual notes there are further explanations of difficult passages, as well as discussions on the translations. In the notes there are also summaries of the lives of the various patrons for whom the poems were composed. There is a linguistic analysis of the poems, which compares the poet's language with that of other Eighteenth-century poets and which highlights the dialectic features of 6 Gormain's Irish. There are two appendices; one of which is an edited manuscript account of6 Gormain's personal library, the other being a catalogue of the manuscripts which he wrote. Muiris 6 Gormain was probably born between 1700 and 1710. He seems to have lived and worked as hedge school teacher in the counties of Monaghan, Cavan and Armagh before moving to Dublin around the year 1750. While in Dublin, 6 Gormain enjoyed some success as a teacher, translator and scribe. He worked closely with Charles Vallancey on his Grammar of the Iberno-Celtic (1782) and assisted Charlotte Brooke with her Reliques of Irish Poetry (1789). He was emanuensis to the Committe of Antiquities of the Royal Dublin Society and worked closely with the Chevalier Thomas O'Gorman and Charles O'Connor of Bel nag are. He died in Dublin in 1794. As an occasional poet, 6 Gormain mostly wrote panegyric poems on emminent members of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy and on Gaelic Catholic priests. While these poems may not always be attractive to the modem reader, they may be compared favourably, to an extent, with earlier Classical Irish Poetry (1200- c.1650).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In this work the fungicide properties of novel SiO2/Ag2S and TiO2/Ag2S nanocomposites were investigated. Thus the nanocomposites were first prepared by growing Ag2S nanophases at the surfaces of submicron SiO2 and TiO2 particles. The Ag2S nanophases were grown by the decomposition of a silver (I) diethyldithiocarbamate complex in the presence of 1,2-diaminopropane. The nanocomposites obtained (SiO2/Ag2S and TiO2/Ag2S) were characterized by a range of techniques which showed Ag2S (acanthite) nanocrystals dispersed over the SiO2 and TiO2 surfaces. The antifungal activity of the above mentioned nanocomposites was investigated against Penicillium sp and Aspergillus niger. The nanocomposites showed antifungal activity and this depended on several parameters such as the substrate characteristics, Ag2S content and fungi exposition time.

Abstract:
Today, there are industries that utilize AGVs to transport goods and materials from one location to another. For smaller scale industries it is costly to have a custom made AGV for their manufacturing unit, so they modify the shape of an AGV to accommodate the necessity of carrying and transporting goods. When the shape of an AGV is modified the built-in sensors will not detect the change in shape of the AGV. Hence, there is a risk that the AGV may collide with objects. Also in some AGVs floor sensors are missing to detect the presence of floor/no floor in front of the AGV, which can be a hazardous situation as there are chances of the AGV falling off from the surface. An example of such an AGV is the Patrolbot which can travel around in an industrial premise wirelessly, but needs addition of such sensors to avoid collisions with the modified structure. A Patrolbot has been used in this thesis work and ultrasonic sensors are utilised for obstacle detection with a modified structure and a built-in laser scanner is studied for mapping purpose. The results of this master thesis was that the ultrasonic sensors were tested under various conditions and results were derived. To obtain the same level of results every time it is required to maintain the conditions on which the ultrasonic sensors rely.

Chang, Su-Chen. "Improvised great ages : the creating of Qingming shengshi." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44289.

Full text
Abstract:
From the Ming to the Qing dynasty, Qingming shanghe tu was among the paintings most frequently copied by professional painters and most often collected and viewed by urban residents, merchants, scholar officials and nobles. Over one hundred copies are extant. Modern scholars have disregarded these paintings, considering them not as “original works” but as mere copies and/or forgeries after Zhang Zeduan or Qiu Ying. This thesis proves their value by showing that though based on earlier works, Qingming painters created distinctive paintings that visualized pre-modern viewers’ various conceptions of a “great age,” an ideal society from the traditional Chinese perspective—Qingming Shengshi. Through comparisons of the earliest Qingming scroll by Zhang Zeduan of the Song dynasty and six selected Qingming paintings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, my thesis shows that later painters reinterpreted the subject matter, copied and modified original motifs, and added new motifs drawn from contemporary life experiences and concerns. That is, these painters created new paintings using the title and structure of the well-known Zhang Zeduan scroll. Many Ming-Qing viewers stated that the Qingming scrolls were portrayals of a prosperous age. My analysis shows that themes in these paintings relate closely to the economic success and social changes in this period. In other words, painters and patrons extracted elements of the prosperity and cultural transformations of their age to design paintings based on the notion of Qingming shengshi. The variety of these scrolls and responses via inscriptions demonstrate that people from various backgrounds and different times and places held diverse views of an ideal world. Analysis of the six paintings reveals that over time this ideal world grew from a smaller prosperous economy to a much larger one, and changed from one where humble customs were followed to a much more luxurious, unrestrained and fashion-conscious way of living. Despite these changes, certain conservative ideas were preserved. Such traits demonstrate that people’s view of a great age was a dynamic conjunction of various conventions and new fashions, and lead us to believe that this was a new mode of visual cultural production: a model of improvisation.

This project was made togetherwith two other groups from the mechanical engineering program at HalmstadUniversity. The project was divided into three units and we had the mainresponsibility for the design of the chassis. The goal of this project is to create a better understanding of the origin of the universeand how it still to this day keeps changing. This is believed to be achievable by usinglunar interferometers that will collect data in form of cosmic microwaves from outerspace. The lunar interferometers will be placed at the far side of the Moon since thisis the only site in solar system that is shielded from human-generated interference. The work was completed in collaboration with JPL and NASA, which are worldleading designers and manufacturers of space-related products.

Abstract:
The cosmic “Dark Ages” is the cosmic era between the epochs of recombination of cosmic microwave background and the formation of the first stars. The only signal from this epoch is from neutral hydrogen, which could represent one of the richest data sets in cosmology. In order to extract this data, NASA/JPL has proposed a rover mission to the farside of the moon to deploy several radio arrays. Here the arrays would gather data undisturbed by human interference. This thesis examines the possibility of using photovoltaic and electric batteries as an energy solution for a rover on the moon. The requirement for such a system to survive on the moon is discussed in a literature study. A proof of concept simulation using a Simulink model has also been done. The thesis concludes that a rover can deploy the radio array using solar energy. It would be able to hibernate through the night using radioisotope heating. It would need to wait for its batteries to charge before each night.

Storm, William M. "The Creation of Heaven in the Middle Ages." Thesis, Marquette University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3666124.

Full text
Abstract:

My dissertation focuses on the intersection of the discourses of space and place, art, religion, and politics in poetical accounts of heaven. My study investigates how authors deploy these various traditions to create a heaven that accommodates the needs of a particular audience. Heaven is, according to Yi-Fu Tuan, a "mythical place," which cannot be located. To avoid the problems of a "mythical place," we represent that location with slightly-blurred experiential knowledge or communally-sanctioned practices. The creation of heaven, I argue, does not occur ex nihilo but through a refashioning of knowledge and practices to engage audiences with descriptions of heaven. To examine this concept, I primarily analyze the descriptions of place in Pearl and Piers Plowman, while providing discussion of Paradiso, The Vision of Tnugdal, and episodes from the writings of Hadewijch that offer competing and complementing visions. This study offers an opportunity to view heaven not as simply a consistent and monolithic feature of society but as a created site. Rather than examining heaven solely as art, or only through doctrinal concerns, heaven must be considered in terms of a variety of discourses. The layering of art, politics, religion, and space and place remind readers of the medieval religious project. God, for the medieval, was not an abstract ideal but an ever-present quality of their daily existences; as God could be seen in all facets of life, so too can heaven be seen through aspects of life that seem mundane and removed from ethereal experience.

The first chapter of The Creation of Heaven in the Middle Ages outlines the problem of considering heaven as a monolithic entity. By tracing the history of heaven, the chapter demonstrates that we cannot view heaven as outside of time and place; heaven responds to the needs of particular audiences. As such, heaven cannot be considered only a religious place; heaven is a place that depends upon the engagement of multiple ideas, including theories of space and place, art history, and politics. The second chapter investigates the places of the afterlife in Pearl and Piers Plowman. While similarities exist between the two, each text offers a striking vision of the afterlife; and while a cityscape, and a besieged church and tower evoke distinct impressions of heaven, the chapter examines how each of these visions forces the reader to wonder if heaven might be a viable end. The third chapter engages in how the aesthetic choices of heaven work to create meaning within the mind of the reader. The larger goals of medieval aesthetics, embodied in stained-glass windows, reflect the projects of Pearl and Piers Plowman, namely to teach through a series of highly colored and instructive scenes. The final chapter offers a view of heaven through the political atmospheres of Ricardian England, reflecting the various choices of that monarch that impacts not only earth but also the heavenly retinue. A brief postscript closes out the dissertation that asks how these medieval visions might allow us to view the current interest of heaven, which can be seen in the popularity and success of life after death accounts

Abstract:
This study shows the importance of carolling in the celebrations and festivities of medieval Britain and demonstrates its longevity from the eleventh century to the sixteenth. It illustrates the flexibility of the English carole form for adaptation to include content in high and low registers and its suitability for use on all occasions and by different communal peer groups. It also shows that the carole was part of a developmental trajectory that was not totally subsumed by the dominance, from the sixteenth century onwards, of the religious, composed, polyphonic carol and the subsequent use of the name to denote a specifically Christian Christmas hymn. Although the vast majority of extant texts in carol form, from the late medieval period, are religious in subject content, secular carolling was far more prevalent than the textual record implies. The dance-song elements of the medieval carole were so strongly woven into the vernacular cultural fabric of the British Isles that their threads can be traced through the folk-songs and dances of subsequent centuries. This study contextualises the written evidence and re-integrates the various components of the activity in order to illuminate our understanding of the universally popular medieval, participatory, pastime of carolling.
