Abstract:

Abstract: This study undertakes an economic analysis of selected sustainable land management (SLM) models in three selected provinces: Hoa Binh province in the Northwestern Mountainous region, Quang Tri province in the North Central Coast and Can Tho province in the Mekong Delta. The SLM models in Hoa Binh province are agroforestry models and those in the provinces of Quang Tri and Can Tho are annual crop rotations and intercropping with improved cultivation methods. The present study uses primary data from a multipurpose survey of 826 farm households. The results show that the agroforestry systems in Hoa Binh province are not financially attractive to farmers as their net returns are low, but their off-site benefit of soil erosion reduction in terms of safe removal and dumping cost of sediment is remarkable, about VND 300,000–320,000 per hectare per year. The SLM models in Hai Lang district (Quang Tri) are profitable with a much higher net return than that of prevailing non-SLM model with cassava mono-cropping. For Can Tho province, the SLM models with rice and upland crop rotations have significantly higher net returns than those of the triple-rice rotation model. However, the profitability of the studied SLM models is significantly affected by the risks associated with poor development or lack of outlet markets. Enhancing farmers’ agribusiness knowledge making them be able to deal with risks in the adoption of SLM models is of vital importance.

Keywords: sustainable land management economic analysis, Hoa Binh, Quang Tri, Can Tho

Abstract:
Mobile phone usage has come to play a vital role in the enhancement of farmers’ agriculture business. Currently, the adoption of mobile phone technology is considered an important factor in enhancing farmers' access to knowledge of the agricultural market situation. This paper studies the determinants of smartphone adoption in agricultural production and examines the roles smartphone use plays in promoting agricultural firms’ performance. We collected research data from 389 agricultural households in Hoa Binh Province, Vietnam. We considered the impacts of both farmer and farm characteristics on the adoption of smartphones in agriculture. The farmers’ characteristics we examined included the influences of age, education, and gender. For the farm characteristics, we considered the impacts of farm size, farm diversification, and farm location. Using the PLS-SEM method, the results showed that gender had no impact on household smartphone adoption in agricultural production, while education, farm size, farm diversification, and farm location each had a positive effect on smartphone adoption. Farmer age and farm location both impeded smartphone adoption. In addition, as per our expectation, the use of smartphones in agricultural production helped increase the farm’s financial performance. Based on these findings, we offer suggestions to policymakers and researchers in the field of agriculture technologies.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to facilitate the joint assessment of issues related to the agricultural systems, i.e. agriculture, aquaculture and climate change (CC) response strategies, in the coastal districts with a panel of stakeholders; and to evaluate the level of agreement on the topics under consideration and potentially identify the most promising approaches to assessing CC affecting agricultural systems in the area and identify relevant and adequate response strategies. Design/methodology/approach – Stakeholder Delphi technique – its assessment is an interactive method of qualitative research used to facilitate the interactive participation of varied and conceivably hierarchical and antagonistic stakeholder groups. Findings – The most important result for the province is that the impact of climate change on agro-ecological landscapes (poverty and near river areas) is the duration of cold weather, more frequent and extreme. Moreover, Kendall’s W test gave a score of 0.547, which indicates a “strong” stakeholder agreement and the “confidence in ranks” being “high” in Thai Binh (Vietnam). Originality/value – The scientific results in this study are intended to serve as relevant knowledge-inputs and direct contributions to capacity-building for the local partners (stakeholders and local authorities). These local partners are engaged in policy-making and effective planning and implementation of climate response measures in the districts in the province of Thai Binh.

Abstract:
Vietnam has been extensively affected by floods, suffering heavy losses in human life and property. While the Vietnamese government has focused on structural measures of flood defence such as levees and early warning systems, the country still lacks flood risk assessment methodologies and frameworks at local and national levels. In response to this gap, this study developed a flood risk assessment framework that uses historical flood mark data and a high-resolution digital elevation model to create an inundation map, then combined this map with exposure and vulnerability data to develop a holistic flood risk assessment map. The case study is the October 2010 flood event in Quang Binh province, which caused 74 deaths, 210 injuries, 188,628 flooded properties, 9019 ha of submerged and damaged agricultural land, and widespread damages to canals, levees, and roads. The final flood risk map showed a total inundation area of 64,348 ha, in which 8.3% area of low risk, 16.3% area of medium risk, 12.0% area of high risk, 37.1% area of very high risk, and 26.2% area of extremely high risk. The holistic flood risk assessment map of Quang Binh province is a valuable tool and source for flood preparedness activities at the local scale.

Abstract:
Drought is a dry-weather event characterized by a deficit of water resources in a period of year due to less rainfall than normal or overexploitation. This insidious hazard tends to occur frequently and more intensively in sub-humid regions resulting in changes in the landscape, transitions in agricultural practices and other environmental-social issues. The study area is in the sub-humid region of the northern coastal zone of Binh Thuan province, Vietnam—Tuy Phong district. This area is indicated as a subject of prolonged droughts during 6-month dry seasons, which have occurred more frequently in recent years. Associated with economic transitions in agricultural practicing, urbanization, and industrialization, prolonged droughts have resulted in rapid changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in Tuy Phong, especially in three coastal communes: Binh Thanh, Lien Huong, and Phuoc The. A bi-temporal analysis using high-resolution data, the 2011 WorldView2 and the 2016 GeoEye1, was examined to assess LULC changes from observed severe droughts in those three communes. Results showed a dramatic reduction in the extent of hydrological systems (about 20%), and significant increases of tree canopies in urban areas and near the coastal areas (approximately 76.8%). Paddy fields declined by 51% in 2016; such areas transitioned to inactive status or were alternated for growing drought-tolerant plants. Shrimp farming experienced a recognizable decrease by approximately 44%. The 2014 map and field observations during summer 2016 provide references for object-based classification and validation. Overall agreement of results is about 85%.

Abstract:
Thai Binh is a coastal province of Red River Delta in Vietnam, having administrative boundaries at the river systems and coastlines that cause groundwater quality varies complicatedly. Today in Thai Binh province, the groundwater in Holocene and Pleistocene aquifers is exploited for domestic use. But, beside the quality of groundwater in this region is not uniform, it is interspersed between salt water and fresh water zones in Holocene and Pleistocene aquifers. Nowaday, under the force of groundwater exploitation activity for domestic purposes, agricultural activities, the impact of climate change and sea level rise issues, the quality of distribution of groundwater here change. According to the recent research results, groundwater quality and distribution of salt water - fresh water there have many changes compared with the research results of the Northern Division for Water resources Planning and Investigation in the year 1996. For the the Holocene aquifer (qh), distribution area of salt water zone has been narrowed. Besides, saline cleaning process occurred in some coastal areas in Tien Hai, Thai Thuy and a part of Quynh Phu district. For the Pleistocene aquifer (qp), compared with research result in 1996, the boundaries between saline and fresh water at the present time is not change so much. By assessing the status of the distribution of saline and fresh water zones in groundwater in Thai Binh and the movement of this boundary, author’s research results will be the basis that helps the managers give out reasonable exploiting and sustainable using methods for these natural resources.

Abstract:
Agriculture is an important sector of Vietnam, in which agricultural extension (AE) is a long-standing activity but was officially institutionalized in 1993 when Vietnam reformed its economic model. The AE system in Vietnam is organized quite closely from the central to local levels with various forms of AE. This study assesses the satisfaction of farmers with AE services in Quang Binh province, Vietnam. The results of a survey of 455 farmers show a positive relationship between quality and satisfaction. Factors such as assurance, reliability, and sympathy are important factors in AE service quality. The study also provides recommendations to strengthen AE services, including updating technical information, organizing demonstration models, and stronger investment in AE systems at all levels.
