This article discusses the revitalization of agriculture through the knowledge of the extension agents to the community about the socioeconomic of agriculture. The interesting thing is that the potential of each region to develop agribusiness is very different. Therefore, to develop extension services that support the development of agribusiness, it is necessary to examine carefully the potential of each region. So that the diversity of extension materials must be made possible by innovation. Agricultural extension is expected to be the central point of agricultural development. However, in agricultural extension it must be remembered that extension is a form of intervention against farmers. Progressive and effective agricultural extension workers must be supported and collaborate closely with the Agricultural Research Institute including socio-economic research on agricultural extension which simultaneously conducts monitoring and evaluation of agricultural extension continuously. In disseminating information, the extension worker must carry out a reciprocal process, namely conveying information in the form of researchers' findings to farmers. Sustainable agricultural development really requires the support of strong agricultural technology and socio-economic research results. Without this, agricultural development will stagnate. Therefore, people's participation in planting knowledge needs to be increased.

Abstract:
The area of Batu City generally performs high agricultural productivity. Batu is known as a producer of food and horticultural commodities that meet the needs of other regions. However, an excessive use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural land has resulted in reducing land quality and productivity. Regarding such issues, the municipal government of Batu city encourages the implementation of organic farming. The role of extension workers is expected to be able to provide implementation up to the level of farmer cultivation management. The objectives of this study include (1) evaluating the performance of agricultural extension services, (2) identifying the internal and external environment of the organic agriculture extension program, (3) analyzing the strategy for developing an organic agriculture extension program. The study was conducted in the District of Junrejo Bumiaji Batu. Farmers and key persons were interviewed to obtain perceptual variables on the performance of extension workers, and strategies to increase the role of extension workers. The results of this study indicate that the performance of agricultural extension in seven indicators is sufficient. Only one indicator that has unsatisfactory performance is the media used in education counseling. Strategies for increasing the role of extension workers include: (1) improving information about organic agriculture by improving extension methods, (2) increasing the ability of farmer groups by working with stakeholders, (3) improving more effective and efficient extension methods, (4) improving the number of extension agents to optimize services for farmers, and (5) improving the quality of extension workers.JEL Classification: Q16, Q58, Q56

Abstract:
The study examined the influence of socio-economic characteristics of urban extension workers on farmers’ empowerment. Purposive and simple random sampling methods were used to select 64 extension workers by utilizing the Yamane formula. Data were collected by the use of questionnaires. Frequencies, percentiles and multiple linear regressions were utilised to analyse the data. The extension workers’ socio - economic characteristics were found to positively influence the choice of extension methods. The findings revealed that 37.2% of farmer empowerment could be explained by the choice of extension methods influenced by the characteristics of extension workers. However, 49.9% of the extension workers were not aware of the adult learning principles (ALPs) that are employed in the appropriate choice of extension methods. The study recommends that extension workers in Nairobi County be trained in competencies to consider ALPs and information communication and technology (ICT) techniques in choices of extension methods. These competencies can ultimately lead to an extension system design transformation that will assist the few extension workers to serve more farmers efficiently and effectively leading to farmer empowerment. Key words: Extension worker characteristics, farmer empowerment, Nairobi, urban and peri-urban agriculture.

Abstract:
This study examined the perception of rural women farmers on information dissemination skills of agricultural extension workers. Using multistage sampling procedure 378 respondents were randomly selected from the population of 6758 women farmers. Questionnaire was administered to the sampled farmers. Data were analysed using mean, and standard deviation. Findings reveals that women farmers participated moderately in agricultural practices with overall mean value of 2.65. Also, agricultural extension workers had a lower level of information dissemination skill in dealing with women farmers with overall mean value of 2.25. There is the need for training and retraining of extension workers to boost their skills for information delivery to women farmers. Extension programme for rural women should be designed to ensure extension workers are well informed and knowledgeable enough to work with them.

English
Involvement of farmers as actors to support extension activities have been underway for a long time with various approaches. In Indonesia, it started from the involvement of Kontak Tani (Advanced Farmers) in Supra Insus era, then farmer to farmer extension at P4S, as well as Penyuluh Swakarsa (Independent Extension Workers)” (in 2004), and the latest is Penyuluh Swadaya (Self-Help Agricultural Extension Workers) since 2008. The existence of self-help farmer extension workers are recognized since the enactment of Law No. 16/2006 on Extension System of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries. However, even though it runs nearly 10 years, the development of the role of self-help farmer extension workers is not optimal. This paper is a review of various posts including the recent research on self-help farmer extension workers and it aims to study the potential and problems of self-help farmer extension workers. It shows that the self-help farmer extension workers have a self-help capabilities and distinctive social position and they have to get right role. Appropriate support should be given to self-help farmer extension workers as the agricultural extension worker in the future and it must be distinguished between the government and private extension workers.

Abstract:
In the information overload, agricultural extension agents as agents of agricultural development need to have information literacy skills because most of their main tasks and functions are related to the activities of collecting, processing and disseminating agricultural information. This study aims to 1) identify information literacy among extension workers in Cianjur Regency2) analyze the factors that are related to information literacy among extension workers in Cianjur Regency. The study sample was 80 extension workers in Cianjur Regency. The method of analysis uses descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using Spearman Rank correlation to analyze relationships between variables. The results showed that the information literacy level of agricultural extension workers was classified as middle especially in storing and retrieving information, using information effectively and ethically, and communicating knowledge. Extension agents have a high ability in terms of recognizing the information needed, finding and evaluating it. Two factors that are significantly related to information literacy are characteristics of extension agents (age, formal education level, working life) and accessibility of communication media (ease of access and variety of media uses).

Abstract:
The rapid development of communication technology requires agricultural extension workers to be able to use social media in disseminating agricultural information. This study aims to describe the use of social media, analyze the factors associated with the level of social media utilization and analyze the management of agricultural information and its relationship with the use of social media. The study used the observation method to select respondents through the census. The level of social media utilization by respondents was measured by the frequency and duration in using Facebook, WhatsApp, Youtube and Instagram . The frequency of using social media is relatively high for Facebook and WhatsApp. The overall duration of accessing social media is relatively low. Factors that are significantly related to the utilization level of social media are the characteristics of extension workers (level of education and the availability of communication technology tools), perception of extension workers (ease of acces to information), information needs of extension workers (climate and capital) and motivation of extension workers (increasing knowledge and insight). Almost all extension workers manage information obtained from social media to be distributed to farmers.

Abstract:
A survey of a small sample of 123 extension workers in Ghana and Ethiopia may have revealed the key issue facing extension ineffectiveness in Africa—the paucity of extension training. Questions on job satisfaction showed that respondents were highly satisfied with: a) an opportunity to work in an area they are trained (N=88, 57%), b) level of education (N=75 (61%), c) enthusiasm towards their work (N=72 (58.5%), and d) opportunity to work with local farmers. However, they were highly dissatisfied with: a) their salaries (N=108 (87.8%), b) the process of decentralization (N=83 (75.6%), c) cooperation from non-governmental agencies (N=87 (70.7%), d) respect from peers in other sectors of government (N=83 (68.0%), e) training in development (N=79 (65.3%), and f) training in communication (N=65 (54.2%). We find their complaints on lack of or limited training in development and communication worthy to note because in the last 40 years extension performance has stressed facilitation among development partners. It can be argued, therefore, that the slow process of decentralization, the friction between extension workers and their NGO counterparts, and their inability to get along with their compatriots in other ministries can be traced to their limited or lack of training in development and communication, otherwise called “Communication for Development” (C4D). We conclude, therefore, that if extension workers are to be effective in their new role as development facilitators not only must their training in agriculture expand to include C4D but, equally significant, extension systems throughout the continent must operate as a profession. Therefore, the authors recommend the establishment of a professional association throughout Africa, under the rubric of “ExtensionAfrica,” which will address the need for extension effectiveness on the continent. We particularly recommend a collaborative relationship with the African Forum for Agricultural Services (AFAAS), which has a mandate for advising on extension services, to make this happen.

Abstract:
The evolution of sociality in insects caused a divergence in lifespan between reproductive and non-reproductive castes. Ant queens can live for decades, while most workers survive only weeks to a few years. In most organisms, longevity is traded-off with reproduction, but in social insects, these two life-history traits are positively linked. Once fertility is induced in workers, e.g. by queen removal, worker lifespan increases. The molecular regulation of this positive link between fecundity and longevity and generally the molecular underpinnings of caste-specific senescence are not well understood. Here, we investigate the transcriptomic regulation of lifespan and reproduction in fat bodies of three worker groups in the ant Temnothorax rugatulus . In a long-term experiment, workers that became fertile in the absence of the queen showed increased survival and upregulation of genes involved in longevity and fecundity pathways. Interestingly, workers that re-joined their queen after months exhibited intermediate ovary development, but retained a high expression of longevity and fecundity genes. Strikingly, the queen's presence causes a general downregulation of genes in worker fat bodies. Our findings point to long-term consequences of fertility induction in workers, even after re-joining their queen. Moreover, we reveal longevity genes and pathways modulated during insect social evolution. Abstract:
Women farmers constitute the vast majority of agricultural producers in Tanzania; however, it is not clear where they obtain information on modern farming innovations. Knowing these sources will enable the government and international aid organizations to more effectively channel information for increased productivity, leading to national food security, increased incomes for farm families and promoting gender parity in Tanzania. This study, which was carried out among 300 women farmers in Hai and Kilosa districts of Kilimanjaro and Morogoro regions respectively, aimed at identifying their sources of agricultural information. The theory that guided this study was Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations, especially Rogers and Shoemaker’s Source-Message-Channel-Receiver-Effect (SMCRE) model. The study, which yielded a high response rate of 96%, found that radio and agricultural extension workers were the primary sources of agricultural information for women farmers. Therefore, the researchers recommend that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives (MAFC) should focus on community radio as the primary source of information dissemination to farmers and supply rural households with solar-powered radios free of charge or at subsidized cost. The finding that extension workers are women farmers’ second main source of information on farming innovations also defeats the general contention that male extension workers are inaccessible to female farmers. A peculiar finding was that even though women farmers have access to mobile phones they do not use them to obtain agricultural information, perhaps, because the MAFC does not have a system for farmers to call in for information.

Abstract:
Extension is a non-formal learning process to provide knowledge, training, technology, capital, and change the behavior of farmers to be more independent in making decisions. The role of the extension agent in extension activities is as a guide, organizer, technician and consultant to help farmers develop farming and increase production. This study aims to determine the effect of the role of agricultural extension workers on the production of lowland rice in Cibuniasih Village. The research method used is a survey and interviews with 68 respondents, namely rice farmers in Buniasih Village, then analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results showed that the role of agricultural instructors had a significant effect of 66.6% on rice production in Cibuniasih Village. The role of agricultural instructors as supervisors and consultants has a significant influence on the results of lowland rice production, meaning that the performance of extension workers in mentoring and consulting activities with farmers is going well. However, the role of agricultural extension workers as organizers and technicians has not had a significant effect on rice production, because the introduction of technology is still not appropriate and the needs of farmers have not been met properly.

Current sustainable development of agriculture is one of which depends on the capacity of agricultural extension workers. The development of information technology contributes to the means for increasing this capacity. Cyber Extension, which is the embodiment of Law No. 16 of 2006 concerning agricultural extension systems, is expected to be fully utilized by extension agents throughout Indonesia. This is so that the instructors can provide information and develop innovations in agriculture. This study aims to explain the use of media and the stage of information seeking by instructors in Bogor district. The concept used in this research is Cyber Extension, media use and the smoothness of information retrieval. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through surveys. A total of 61 agricultural instructors in Bogor Regency were interviewed through a closed questionnaire. In the media use variable, the results of the study show that the extension agent's ability to access is good while the availability of facilities and operational costs are still in the less category. Abstract:
Information dissemination through agricultural extension workers can increase knowledge, can change behavior, and attitudes of farmers, especially regarding the use of organic fertilizers. Changes in behavior and attitudes can be seen from the participation of farmers in using organic fertilizers. Participation through the participation of farmers can be a more efficient way to achieve the stated goals. The aim of this study was to examine the role of agricultural extension agents in the use of organic fertilizers in the Province of South Kalimantan. Measurement of the role of agricultural extension agents in the use of organic fertilizer using the median score. The role of agricultural extension agents in the use of organic fertilizers includes: the role of agricultural extension agents as motivators, mediators and supervisors. The role of agricultural extension agents as motivators in the use of organic fertilizers gets a median score of 4, which means that agricultural instructors are eager to encourage farmers to use organic fertilizers due to a fairly good farmer response so that extension workers can motivate farmers to use organic fertilizer. The role of agricultural extension agents as mediators in the use of organic fertilizers gets a median score of 4, meaning that the tasks of agricultural extension agents as mediators have been carried out well. Information or policies from related government or extension agencies are delivered by extension agents to farmers, both through regular meetings and incidental meetings. While the role of agricultural extension agents as supervisors in the use of organic fertilizers has a median score of 5 which means that the role of agricultural extension agents has been carried out to the maximum seen from the frequency of implementation of guidance by extension agents.

The owners of all types of farms usually drew upon the following sources of information: ODR (Agricultural Advisory Centres) extension officers, technical journals, training courses, internet and television. Livestock farms (cattle and pig farms) showed a greater demand for extension services that did mixed production farms. Of the extension services present, consulting by ODR’s workers and by agricultural agencies were in the greatest demand.

Abstract:
Climate change communication is a pre-requisite for proper adaptation. This article seeks to examine the agricultural extension approaches used in the Ndop rice sector within the context of climate variability and change. Using a mixed research approach, questionnaires were administered to 216 purposively sampled rice farmers, interviews conducted with 16 extension agents and three focus group discussions were organized. Results revealed that extension workers have been using farm demonstrations, capacity building of farmers through training and participatory approaches. However, these approaches have proven to be limited and inefficient. Challenges in climate change communication are attributed to factors such as; low ratio of extension workers to rice farmers, inadequate communication in the mass media (7.14%), no access to internet (4.17%), low competencies of extension staffs (68.75%) and limited access to weather elements. Given that climate change communication is complex and requires a mastery of the climatic systems, the extension services need to continuously upgrade capacities of their staffs and strengthen the link between research institutions, extension workers and farmers.
