The nascent of cold waters it is considered the ex-libris of Agroal, which combined with the charming landscape of the valley where it is inserted, makes of this one, a considered point of interest and attraction in the region. The connections at the use of these waters to miraculous cures, have always been associated with the medicinal powers of the natural mineral water spring. With the evolution of the times, the space was losing their therapeutic character to give way to some pratices of summer vacations, when the river beach was appeared. THE REBIRTH OF AGROAL – The revitalizing proposal of a thermal resort for Agroal, in Ourém, is a project that aims to return Agroal to their original essence, allowing to the visitors enjoy the spaces created, in search of the desired relaxation and well-being, without ever forget the connection of this space to the tradition of baths. It should be noted that the whole project seeks to combine the memory of the place with the new architectural typologies, as well as the experience of the urban space, enabling the coexistence among all users.

With the propose to choose priors more fited for discrete data, we study technics for determination of priors just as Laplace’s Methods, Jeffreys’s Methods and Haldane’s Methods which are conjugated prior. We take a sample of ten grange among the fifty three ones existent of the Pernambuco’s State to estimate the probability of commercial egg (big type). We suppose that the distribution from the sample data is binomial and we use the methods quoted above. The software used for that was the package Winbugs 1.4 where we compute the average, standard deviation, 95% credible interval and their amplitude. For each one of the methods it was observed that 20.000 iterations were sufficient since the balance of the chain already had established with 12.500 iterations. The estimated parameter p=0,664 was obtained by the Laplace’s Method, Jeffreys’s Method and Haldane’s Method.

Abstract:
Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability for which there is no cure. We have discovered that the multidomain signalling protein Agrin, most commonly known for its requirement at the neuromuscular junction, strongly promotes chondrocyte differentiation and cartilage formation in vivo. Agrin is expressed in normal cartilage but absent in osteoarthritis. In vitro, Agrin knockdown resulted in the downregulation of the cartilage transcription factor SOX9 and other cartilage-specific extracellular matrix molecules. Conversely, the addition of exogenous Agrin supported cartilage differentiation in vitro and ectopic cartilage formation in vivo. In contrast to other biological contexts where Agrin signalling requires the interaction with either LRP4 or α-dystroglycan, chondrocytes require the presence of both receptors. Our results identify Agrin as a novel potent anabolic growth factor with strong therapeutic potential in cartilage regeneration.

Full text
Abstract:
The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, is a highly destructive pest native to Asia, first detected in North America in 2002 and in European Russia in 2003. EAB has caused extensive damage to ash trees in North America and Europe, leading to severe ecological and economic consequences. To combat this pest, several hymenopteran parasitoids from the native range of EAB were imported to the USA and Canada for biological control. Key parasitoids include Tetrastichus planipennisi, Spathius galinae and Oobius agrili, which have established in many areas and shown significant success in reducing EAB populations. T. planipennisi and S. galinae are particularly effective, while the impact of O. agrili is still being evaluated. O. agrili has not established well in the USA or Canada. Other potential biological control agents, such as Atanycolus nigriventris, Oobius primorskensis and Spathius polonicus, show promise but face challenges in host specificity and rearing. Continued research and monitoring are essential for effective EAB management.

Full text
Abstract:
The bronze birch borer (BBB), Agrilus anxius, is a significant pest native to North America, affecting birch trees (Betula spp.). Its larvae burrow through the cambial layer, causing tree decline and mortality, especially in stressed North American birches and healthy European and Asian birches. Although endemic in North America, BBB has caused widespread damage, particularly in urban areas and during droughts. The pest poses a potential threat to European and Asian birch forests if it were to spread. Currently, there is no history of classical biological control against BBB. Several natural enemies, including egg and larval parasitoids, such as Thysanus sp., Atanycolus charus and Phasgonophora sulcata, have been identified in North America, but their role in controlling BBB populations is unclear. Other natural enemies, including various parasitoid species and a microsporidian, have shown limited potential. Oobius agrili, a parasitoid used against emerald ash borer (EAB), can parasitize BBB ova, but is less effective when EAB ova are present. Further research is needed to identify and evaluate potential biological control agents for BBB.

Audsley, Neil, Gonzalo Avila, Claudio Ioratti, Valerie Caron, Chiara Ferracini, Tibor Bukovinszki, Marc Kenis, et al. Two-lined Chestnut Borer, Agrilus bilineatus (Weber). Euphresco, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1079/20240228443.

Full text
Abstract:
The 2-lined chestnut borer (Agrilus bilineatus) is a pest native to eastern North America, affecting oak (Quercus spp.) and chestnut (Castanea spp.). The larvae feed under the bark, leading to tree death within one to four years. While primarily a secondary pest attacking stressed trees, it can affect healthy trees during outbreaks. Recently established in Turkey, it poses a significant threat to European oak and chestnut species. There is no history of classical biological control against A. bilineatus. The parasitoid Phasgonophora sulcata, native to North America, shows potential as a biological control agent but is not species-specific. Other natural enemies, including various parasitoids and predators, have been identified, but their effectiveness and associations with A. bilineatus require further research. The potential for significant impact in Europe and the EPPO region underscores the need for monitoring and possible control measures if the pest spreads.

Valverde, Alvaro. Information and communication technologies for improving investment readiness of small and medium agribusinesses. Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA), 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1079/20240191164.

Abstract:
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly seen as an enabler to improve and promote efficiencies in global food market systems, and the high penetration rate of mobile phones is playing a catalytic role in developing countries. Mobile-based agriculture-value-added services (agri-VAS) aim to mitigate the information, financial and market access gaps faced by smallholder farmers and agribusinesses in developing countries. Over the last two decades, the number and variety of agri-VAS has been continuously increasing, and their landscape has been evolving. However, many agri-VAS never reach financial sustainability or scale and are discontinued after a few years. Increasing efforts are being made to map the landscape of agri-VAS targeted at smallholder farmers across Africa and Asia. However, insufficient attention has been paid to exploring successful agri-VAS that have small and medium (SME) agribusinesses as their main clients and that source from smallholder farmers. Areas with potential for further study include the following: (a) agribusinesses operating in value chains that are digitized by others (e.g. mobile network operators); (b) agribusinesses that are developing and deploying agri-VAS in-house; (c) agribusinesses using services provided by third-party agri-VAS providers within their value chains; and (d) agribusinesses that develop partnerships with agri-VAS providers to co-develop solutions. This study aims to address the following question: What are the factors behind successful deployment of mobile technologies to improve agribusiness productivity and investment readiness? It aims to analyse agri-VAS that have SME agribusinesses as their main clients, as they are more likely to positively impact the investment readiness of SME agribusinesses than agri-VAS with smallholder farmers as their only clients, which are also the most evaluated type of agri-VAS. The study consists of a combination of secondary and primary research, resulting in: (a) a set of investment-policy and service-design recommendations, based on high-impact, sustainable agribusiness-focused VAS; (b) recommendations on how to improve the body of impact evidence; and (c) the identification of investment opportunities at the agribusiness and agri-VAS levels.
