Abstract:
Attributions for events with information varying on age relevance (teen, young, middle-aged, and older main characters) and context (family, work) were examined in young, middle-aged, and older adults. Participants rated the degree to which the causes of a negative outcome were a function of three dispositional dimensions of the primary character, two dimensions of situational factors, and a combination of these. They also wrote essays justifying their ratings. Overall and in support of previous research, older adults were more likely than younger adults to attribute the cause of the negative outcome to the primary character (Blanchard-Fields, 1994). This bias was not attenuated by the age-relevance factor. Instead, in the work context, older and middle-aged adults placed greater blame on main characters relevant to their age group for negative outcomes than did young adults. However, older adults were also more likely than middle-aged or young adults to attribute the cause of a negative outcome to situational factors. Age relevance and context influenced attributional ratings for all participants in that: (a) older characters were rated higher on external attributions and younger characters were rated higher on internal attributions; and (b) higher internal attributions were made for work situations than for family situations. Finally, young and middle-aged adults were more dialectical in justifying their causal attributions than older adults. Findings are discussed in terms of the degree to which a dispositional bias in older adults is influenced by the developmental relevance of one’s everyday context.

Abstract:
This study investigated the development of the mental representation of Chinese disyllabic words. Unlike alphabetical languages, Chinese is a logographic system where character is the basic unit of meaning. Most Chinese words are composed of two characters. Theoretically, Chinese compound word can be read either as a whole unit or as the component character. Subjects were asked to read aloud a list of two-character words, controlled for word and component character frequencies across grades. The correct percentage was analyzed using three two-way analyses of variance. Results indicated that children are able to make use of both levels of reading as early as Grade 1. Lower graders tended to use both the component character level reading processes more, while higher graders tended to read words as whole units more.

Abstract:
Tokopatta palm (Livistona jinkensiana) is a valuable non timber multiple end uses forest species of Arunachal Pradesh. In order to establish improved plantation, the production of quality seedling of this species is essential. The present study was undertaken to determine tree age effects on seed characters, seed germination and performance of seedlings. The 500 seeds sample from each plantations aged 18, 25, 35, 45, 54, 63 and 74 years old around Pasighat town under East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, India were taken to see the effect of tree ageon seed morphological characters, seed germination and seedling performance. Significant variation was observed for seed diameter and seed weight between plantations of different ages. The age effect was also seen in the germination patterns with middle aged plantations producing most superior seeds in terms of seed morphological parameters and germination behavior. Seedling attributes after 12 months showed that seedling obtained from young and middle aged plantations (between 18 to 45 years) performed better than those beyond 50 years.

Abstract:
Nanoindentation tests were conducted near the grain boundary (GB) of the Al-Mg-Si alloy, and the influence of GB character on the aging precipitation behavior and the mechanical properties was confirmed. After obtaining the GB characters by electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis, nanoindentation tests were carried out on under-aged, peak-aged, and over-aged samples. And then, the indentation areas were observed by back scattered electrons imaging (BSE) in order to identify indentation positions with respect to the GB. In this study, for the GB character, focusing on the rotation angle, the high-angle GB (HAGB) and the low-angle GB (LAGB) were selected. In addition, coincident site lattice GBs (CSL) were selected as the special GB. In the 180°C under-aged samples, the nano-hardness near GB is higher than that far from GB, while 180°C peak-aged samples, the nano-hardness is lower than that far from GB. Then the range near the GB where the hardness changes was larger at HAGB than at LAGB and CSL3. This suggests that the GB character affects the aging precipitation behavior and mechanical properties.

Abstract:
Child actors and actresses perform in television programs, such as contests, shows and series, and in movies broadcasted in Turkey. After the program is broadcasted, social media accounts such as Facebook and instagram are opened by their parents for these children and it is attempted to increase their popularity. Children with increased popularity begin to act in new series and advertisements, and they are drawn into a consumption cycle. While these children, who are used for humour, promotional or dramatic factors, are disturbed, on the other hand, they cause that children's real and big problems (poverty, child labor, abuse, abduction, refugee, etc.) are ignored. This study provides a perspective on child characters in competition programs, TV shows, television series, television programs and movies broadcasted on televisions in 2018 in Turkey. The program in which children aged between 5 and 12 years appear, and their Instagram accounts were tracked and examined. The culture of benefiting from the child in the media multiplies itself as the use of children as mediatic characters in the media in Turkey continues, and the fact that children can be used as a source of income without considering that they can be overwhelmed by the burden of fame becomes widespread. This indicates the perception of childhood in society, the visibility of child individuals' problems, and a frightening future for children.

Abstract:
<p class="apa">The aim of this study was to identify and characterize children’s perspectives on a picture book’s themes and characters by examining their drawings. The study was conducted over a five-month period in a public kindergarten in southern Taiwan, with six children aged 5-6 years. Picture book appreciation activities focused on eight picture books. Research data were collected via digital recordings of participants’ appreciation and art-making activities, interviews, and associate teachers’ feedback. A qualitative research method was used to process and analyze data. Study results indicate that with regard to theme, children could clearly identify and characterize a story’s theme but seldom offered in-depth interpretations. With regard to character, children could describe a picture book character’s outward appearance and inner feelings but could not present its inner feelings in their drawings. These and other findings from this study could aid early childhood educators in conducting picture book appreciation activities in the future.</p>

Abstract:
Being aged is an inevitable process of nature but the way society and its institutions define aged people may not be an acceptable process to judge every single aged people, as each human is different from others in regard to physic, life philosophy and mentality signifying that every human is an unique creation of the Creator. However, Shakespeare, being so much celebrated, praised and a universal writer delineates his characters and their involvement to his drama being somehow dogmatic in regard to age. This paper aims at the approach of Shakespeare towards the young and the elderly characters and tries to bring out a hypothesis based on gerontological theory in mind. The key objective of this paper is to find out what Shakespeare thinks about the aged people and how the aged characters been portrayed in As You Like It. Furthermore, this paper will distinguish the thought of Shakespeare, being xenophobic about the aged, with that of the gerontologists’ remark of approaching an aged man. In order to achieve its aim, a critical analysis planted on the gerontological view of Age will be conducted. Decisively, this paper hopes to come up with the attitude Shakespeare possesses at the time of treating an elderly man.

Abstract:
Male and female mallards Anas platyrhynchos are easily told apart, whereas ageing is problematic, due to individual timing of moult and lack of easily defined age criteria. From examination and photographic documentation of mallards caught at Ottenby Bird Observatory (56°12′N, 16°24′E), we describe nine characters of plumage and bare parts to be used for ageing in autumn. The reliability of these characters was tested by letting experienced bird ringers determine putative age of birds from photos. Age determination from any single character proved to be uncertain, as correctly assigned mallard photos of each character was in the range of 51–85% for males and 48–89% for females. For both sexes, the lowest figure represented post-humerals and the highest represented tertials. Rectrices, tertial coverts, and greater coverts had high scores (71–85%). Using all characters, 91% of the males and 95% of the females were correctly aged. As young mallards, with the progress of pre-breeding moult (completed from October onwards), acquire tail and tertials identical to adults, untypical individuals are better not assigned to an age category.

Abstract:
Although characterisation is a much-aged matter in literature, certain aspects have yet to be explored, such as how fictional characters implicate in their discourse, what takes influence from this, and what comes to pass in the production and interpretation process of the phenomenon. As the contribution is of subtlety, implicata in characters’ discourse have not exclusively been studies in detail as elements of characterisation. Therefore, in view of the cognitive approach leant towards by leading researchers on the subject of characterization such as Jonathan Culpeper, this research relies on Sperber and Wilson’s ‘relevance theory’ to define cognitive procedures into instances of implicata verbally exchanged between fictional characters to determine a) how authors exploit such instances for trait progression of their characters and upholding character discourse credibility, and b) how readers can achieve what Furlong terms a ‘non-spontaneous’ interpretation of such exchanges. To address the stated issue, we conducted a detailed cognitive-effectual analysis on five instances of implicata made by four flat and round characters within Arthur C. Doyle’s ‘A Study in Scarlet’, the results of which yielded a mechanism wherein writers’ making implications and readers’ calculating and interpreting them hinge on both parties making presuppositions on certain topics to ensure certain pragmatic presuppositional effect for readers. A five-stage bottom-up process was also proposed which links character traits to implications conveyed within inter-character discourse, following through which can lead to readers’ achieving maximal relevance on the made implications and a non-spontaneous interpretation of them.

Abstract:
Children’s parasocial relationships (PSRs) with media characters end through a process called PSR breakups. An online parent report measure was used to describe preschool and school-aged children’s breakups with media characters, as well as the attributes of past and current favorite characters. According to parents ( N = 138), 51% of children experienced PSR breakups. PSRs lasted about two years before a breakup occurred. Past and current favorite characters were animated, human-like, and embedded in fantastical content. Current favorite characters taught fewer academic lessons than past favorite characters. Both boys and girls had current favorite characters that were more gendered in their physical appearance than past favorite characters. However, girls’ current favorite characters had more masculine traits than past favorite characters. Our findings suggest possible avenues for the design of future media characters that can teach as they entertain.

Abstract:
As one of the most outstanding Japanese authors, Haruki Murakami always comes up with excellent ideas of surrealistic stories. The Postmodern condition is evident in most of Murakami’s novels. A sense of alienation of character and world is evident by a language medium invented to form a kind of rhythmic syntax structure which complements the illustration of the main characters’ subconscious fears and paranoia in the course of his exploration of a seemingly chaotic world. His portrayal of characters is unique and significant that expresses the dichotomy of characters who fight between reality and fantasy. Nevertheless, their ambition to be free from the structures that bound them do not always come true. Some of them left their symbolic mechanism to enter another one. In the end, the characters cannot be the Other; as long as they are still in the clutches of a particular token device they would only be able to be the other. His Characters explore themselves in search of meaning of their existence. His characters often utter speeches which directly contradict their subsequent actions. They are male, middle-aged, leading aimless existences. They enjoy preparing and eating such western foods as spaghetti; they love American pop culture, particularly music of the 1960s and 1970s; and they are hedonistic and idle. They either engage in casual love affairs or fantasize about having them. His novels like After dark(2004) and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1994) is postmodern works by the coexistence of the surreal scenes.

Abstract:
The rationale of this work combines the concepts of role playing and storytelling in the creation of an interactive virtual environment aimed at assessing and training students' perspective taking skill, or the ability of students in primary and secondary level to take the point of view of the characters of a narrative. The ability to take the perspective of others is extremely important from the cognitive point of view. Piaget has suggested that the moment we abandon the egocentric perspective in favor of the ability to take another point of view, takes place not earlier than seven years of age. Subsequent researches challenged the findings of Piaget. For this reason, the project will address children in the last years of primary school (aged 8-10) and the first level of secondary school (aged 11-13). From 8 years old then, in fact, the child, in the opinion of many researchers who have addressed this issue, should be out of the egocentric stage and should have acquired the skill of perspective taking. The goal of current stage is to create a tool that allows the students to take the point of view of the characters in a story and to make choices in the narrative, which are consistent with the role of the character played.

Abstract:
Bottle aging is the final stage before wines are drunk, and is considered as a maturation time when many chemical changes occur. To get a better understanding of the evolution of wines’ flavor profile, the flavor compounds (phenolic and volatile compounds), dissolved oxygen (DO), and flavor characters (OAVs and chromatic parameters) of rosé and dry white wines bottled with different closures were determined after 18 months’ bottle aging. The results showed the main phenolic change trends of rosé wines were decreasing while the trends of white wines were increasing, which could be the reason for their unique DO changing behaviors. Volatile compounds could be clustered into fluctuating, increasing, and decreasing groups using k-means algorithm. Most volatile compounds, especially some long-chain aliphatic acid esters (octanoates and decanoates), exhibited a lower decrease rate in rosé wines sealed with natural corks and white wines with screw caps. After 18 months of bottle aging, wines treated with natural corks and their alternatives could be distinguished into two groups based on flavor compounds via PLS-DA. As for flavor characters, the total intensity of aroma declined obviously compared with their initial counterparts. Rosé wines exhibit visual difference in color, whereas such a phenomenon was not observed in white wines.

Abstract- Setu Babakan town which is located in Srengseng Sawah political districts, Jagakarsa sub-district, South Jakarta, is a region of settlement that are established as Betawi cultural heritage. This research discusses about representation of Betawi culture physical characters in Setu Babakan town. Culture characters could be faded with the advent of times due to lifestyle that has changes, but it could also be adhere with the awareness of the importance of preserving the existing culture. This study attempts to know how far do the Setu Babakan physical characters as Betawi culture heritage districts reflects the physical characters of Betawi native culture, so it can be found which physical characters that is still retained, that modificated, and that are totally changed. In addition, can also be found how many buildings which is still retaining the whole physical heritage of Betawi culture, which only retaining some of the physical heritage of Betawi culture, and which are not retaining the physical heritage of Betawi culture at all. Scope of this study was conducted throughout the area of Setu Babakan town so that the data be more accurate and to represent the overall condition of the area. The interview and questionnaire distribution was conducted to 21 respondents (20 respondents wich are Betawi ethnic and 1 respondent which is not Betawi ethnic, aged between 23-67 years old, islamist, with 3/4/5/6/10 family members)and the management of Setu Babakan town (Pak Buhori) to complement the data obtained through literature study and field observation about physical characters (buildings and outdoor layouts) and non-physical characters (rituality, social activities, religious, economic, abstinence, lifestyle, and education) of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town and the physical and nonphysical characters of Betawi native culture. Data from the respondents, interior photo of respondent’s house, and respondents photo have been permitted by the concerned parties to be published. The observation and recovery data was undertaken along January-march 2018. Physical characters data (existing condition) that was obtained through direct observation in the field are strengthened by matching it with the existing condition in google street to avoid mistakes/inadvertence in the process of field observation. Physical characters observation is conducted by seeing one by one building, to know the authenticity level of its physical characters of Betawi culture in every building. All of the observation results were recorded by doing mapping. This research is qualitative-quantitative research approach descriptive and cultural. Analysis is conducted in descriptive and causal comparative approach qualitative-quantitative. The analysis begins by comparing the physical characters of Betawi native culture backed by the non-physical characters with physical characters of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town backed by the non-physical characters. Then doing macro mapping (showing number of buildings that retained the overall of physical characters of Betawi culture, that retained some of them, and that totally changed) and micro mapping (showing which physical characters that still been retained, modificated, nor totally changed) to know how far did the physical characters of Setu Babakan town as Betawi culture heritage districts reflected the physical characters of Betawi native culture and to know the factors that influence it. The research results show, the physical character application of Betawi culture in Setu Babakan town has faded, so it needs to be developed again. Not until 50% of the buildings retained the physical characters of Betawi culture. Key Words: physical characters, Setu Babakan town, Betawi culture heritage districs, South Jakarta

Abstract:
SUMMARYPerennial ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cultivars are out-breeding populations of differing phenotypes, potentially allowing for directional selection to occur after sowing. To investigate this, the morphology of individual space plants (i.e. isolated plants sown at 0·75 m row spaces) grown from tillers extracted from single-cultivar swards subjected to frequent cutting (FC) or infrequent cutting (IC) for 5 years (aged accessions) were compared with plants grown from seed (seed accessions). The study examined 12 cultivars, creating 36 ‘accessions’ of 80 plants in each. These plants were examined for 23 morphological measurements to test for and classify directional selection in perennial ryegrass swards. A high degree of separation was achieved between the 12 seed accessions, validating the discriminating power of the experiment. Changes in morphological expression of plants taken from swards indicated selection in favour of particular morphological ideotypes. This directional selection was identified in 10 of the accessions subjected to FC and eight subjected to IC management. Emergence natural height (plant undisturbed height at inflorescence emergence) and plant volume (emergence width × emergence natural height) were the characters modified most between seed and aged accessions. The magnitude of these morphological changes varied between cultivars. Glencar had the greatest number of morphological characters exhibiting directional selection under frequent cutting, whereas Greengold had the greatest number exhibiting directional selection under infrequent cutting. The plants grown from aged swards were also smaller than the seed accessions in all characters, raising the possibility that they may also be less productive. The present study showed that sward management can cause and influence directional selection of plants from within the morphological range of expression within perennial ryegrass cultivars.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between language use in computer-mediated communication and the social identity of the user. The data were collected by surveying 298 Saudi bilingual speakers who are familiar with Arabizi, a blend of Latin characters and Arabic numerals to transliterate Arabic sounds, and then analyzed quantitatively by running tests for statistical confidence in order to determine differences in perceptions between young adults (ages 15-25 years) and middle-aged adults (ages 26-50 years). According to the findings of this study, English is the dominant language among most of the young adults surveyed, and when they do use Arabic, they use Arabizi because of its flexibility, compatibility with modern technology, and its acceptance among people of their age and sociocultural backgrounds. On the other hand, most middle-aged adults surveyed here tend to use Arabic, as they believe that they should show their loyalty to their origin. The results of the study demonstrate a mutual relationship between language use in computer-mediated communication and the user’s social identity, as language is used both to reflect and co-construct that identity.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish the necessity for parents to watch televised animated cartoons with children aged seven to eleven years.Methodology: The study used a descriptive survey method to collect information through casual interviews and self-administered questionnaires. Results: The study found out that the amount of time children spend watching animated cartoons on television can make them retract from social interactions with visitors, parents or other siblings when the television is on. Animated cartoons have an impact on children in respect to acquired or "borrowed" language and dressing styles and attitudes towards role types. These relations may be imperceptible to the casual observer but data show that the best (Kim Possible, Ben 10 and American Dragon) cartoon characters are idols, image ideals and role models to children in Nairobi, yet both the two cartoon characters are not representative of children they interact with every day. This study found that it is prudent animated cartoons affect the perceptions and attitudes that are being reinforced in children and the implication of this on how they construct their worldview and self-worth.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: Parents should be concerned and watch animated cartoons with children because animated cartoons have become an institution through which society is using to bring up children and use to teach values. Media practitioners should air animated cartoons that have no violence or bad morals but are still popular with children. The government should set policies governing the content in animated cartoons aired by the media houses

Abstract:
Older readers (aged 65+ years) of both alphabetic languages and character-based languages like Chinese read more slowly than their younger counterparts (aged 18–30 years). A possible explanation for this slowdown is that, due to age-related visual and cognitive declines, older readers have a smaller perceptual span and so acquire less information on each fixational pause. However, although aging effects on the perceptual span have been investigated for alphabetic languages, no such studies have been reported to date for character-based languages like Chinese. Accordingly, we investigated this issue in three experiments that used different gaze-contingent moving window paradigms to assess the perceptual span of young and older Chinese readers. In these experiments, text was shown either entirely as normal or normal only within a narrow region (window) comprising either the fixated word, the fixated word, and one word to its left, or the fixated word and either one or two words to its right. Characters outside these windows were replaced using a pattern mask (Experiment 1) or a visually similar character (Experiment 2), or blurred to render them unidentifiable (Experiment 3). Sentence reading times were overall longer for the older compared with the younger adults and differed systematically across display conditions. Crucially, however, the effects of display condition were essentially the same across the two age groups, indicating that the perceptual span for Chinese does not differ substantially for the older and young adults. We discuss these findings in relation to other evidence suggesting the perceptual span is preserved in older adulthood.

Abstract:
Strong preferences for sweet and fat tastes (characters) are associated with the consumption of foods high in calories. The taste preferences, especially the sweet and fat tastes (characters), might be one of the factors predisposing children to become overweight and/or develop obesity. The aim of the study is to assess taste preferences in children and their mothers in association with their weight status. In the study, 150 children aged 8–15 were included; among them, 75 had overweight and/or obesity, and 150 mothers of whom 69 were overweight and/or obese. Body composition estimates were obtained using a bioelectrical impedance analysis-body height was measured using a stadiometerSeca 213. Sensory tests were carried out using apple juice of various sugar content and crackers of various fat content. Results show that children prefer a sweet taste more often than their mothers (50.0% vs. 35.3%, p = 0.009). In the group of children who preferred the high-sweet taste, there were twice as many obese children when compared to the group who preferred the low-sweet taste. Similar relationships applied to mothers. Preferences for fat taste (character) among mothers increased the risk of obesity among their children (39% vs. 20%; p = 0.039). Taste preferences, especially a sweet taste preference, seem to be one of the important factors determining overweight and obesity in children and adults. The fat taste(character) preferences in mothers correlate with the overweight and/or obesity of their children, while such preferences among children were not significantly different irrespective of body weight status.

Abstract:
Study Objective: To work out the sexual development standards for ethnic Khanty 7 to 17 years old and their comparative analysis with similar parameters of alien population in the Middle Ob Region of the same age. Study Design: cross-sectional cohort comparative study. Materials and Methods. The study included 2,554 children born in Yugra – Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous district and alien adolescents, and 2,431 ethnic Khanty children aged 7 to 17 years with health group I–II. Sexual development formulas were developed on the basis of publications by J.M. Tanner (1969–1970) and M. V. Maksimova (1977). Sexual development formulas were evaluated; the results were analysed in two groups of children and adolescents — ethnic Khanty and alien population in the Middle Ob Region. We compared the mean age (M ± SD) when each of the secondary sex characters appeared and formed. Study Results. We found out that the Khanty develop secondary sex characters later than the alien population, both in girls and boys. Secondary sex characters are formed at the same age in both groups due to faster rate in the Khanty, save for axillary pilosis: in Khanty adolescents, this character is formed later. A distinctive feature of sexual development of Khanty boys is absence of stage P5 of pubic pilosis according to J. M. Tanner and of facial hair. Conclusion. The patterns we found necessitate the use of a differentiated approach to evaluation of sexual development of the Khanty and alien population of Yugra – Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous district. Use of the standards developed for other population groups may cause overdiagnosis of sexual development retardation in children and adolescents in this ethnic group. Abstract The paper presents studies pertaining to the quality of embossed characters of the Braille alphabet used, among other applications, for tagging drug labels. The following parameters of embossed inscriptions were measured: height, diameter of the dots and surface roughness (18 samples with various combinations of their values). 48 blind individuals assessed the quality of the printed text. Statistical analysis proved that a text with dots having height of 0.9 millimeter, diameter of 1.6 millimeters and roughness Ra of about 1 micrometer to be the best. The samples had been made using two different methods of rapid prototyping: PolyJet and SLS. 3D printing is increasingly popular and the studies proved the usefulness of these methods for labeling with embossed inscriptions, due to the repeatability, durability and quality they ensure. The assessing group of blind individuals was comprised of 24 persons 14–17 years old and other 24 persons aged over 60 who were not proficient in reading Braille alphabet, This allows to conclude that a text featuring the above values of the parameters will be easy to read for the majority of blind persons.

Abstract:
Polyandre (1648), Charles Sorel's unfinished novel, deconstructs the picaresque schema which traditionally operates in seventeenth century comic novels. Sorel, in the preface which accompanies the last avatar of his comic trilogy, develops an aesthetic of diversity based on naturalness. An urban pícaro, Polyandre, a middle-aged man back in Paris after a provincial interlude, abandons the formative aspect of the ‘Grand Tour’ in favour of the art of perambulation. A bourgeois novel, depicting the life of the most varied and mediocre figures, Polyandre is also an impressive account of the topography of Paris and social archetypes circulating inside this burlesque geography. In fact, Polyandre's wanderings act as an aggregator of typified characters: the picaresque character, conventionally defined by his social mobility and his moral permeability, becomes, by comic transposition, a vagrant and a judge. But these burlesque shifts are also a metaphorical expression of the very function of comic novels, which is to be a social laboratory.

AbstractWe investigated the development in preschoolers' conceptualization of the written system from its graphic rendering and its mapping onto meaning by analyzing children's writings and readings of their writings. Forty-two Israeli children aged 3.4 – 5.8 years were asked to draw, write, and interpret a number of utterances. By the age of four, children's writings became constricted in size relative to their drawings and were composed of linearly organized units separated by regular blanks. These units increased in their adherence to conventional Hebrew letters throughout the age range examined. Children's interpretations of their own writing were classified into five modes: Interpretation unrelated to the utterance; preserving the content of the utterance but not its verbal form; complete reiteration; dividing the utterance into phonetic units; and description of the written characters. These modes were related to age and to conventionality of characters used.

Traffic accidents are often related to the driver’s driving behavior, which is mainly decided by his or her characters. In order to explore the correlation of traffic accident risk with driver characters, the age, driving experience, and driving style were statistically analyzed based on the China In-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database. Taking the number of casualties in the accident as evaluation indicators, the grey cluster analysis was used to classify the drivers into four accident risk ranks: low, medium to low, medium to high, and high. The results show that drivers aged 18–30 years are more likely to induce accidents; drivers with 6–10 years of driving experience have the highest risk to accidents, followed by drivers with 4-5 years of driving experience; and the driving style is also highly correlated with accident risk tendency.

Abstract:
In this study, 80 Uygur children and Han children aged 5 to 6 years within a Chinese reading context were tested by using an SMI portable eye tracker to record their eye movements in picture and text fixation during picture book reading. The findings are as follows. First, Uygur children aged 5 to 6 years primarily focus on pictures in the process of reading picture books. Their level of fixation of key picture information (main characters) is constantly increasing. An important reading characteristic for Uygur children at this age is to understand picture books through capturing key picture information, whereas Han children at this age show signs of shifting from reading the key picture information to overall information processing, such as obtaining information from the picture details, background information, and text information about their relationship with the key pictures. Second, 5- to 6-year-old Uygur children’s fixation on text begins to have elementary development with age, but their text fixation level significantly lags behind Han children, and their fixation of Chinese characters is still in the elementary stage. Third, 5- to 6-year-old Uygur children’s reading direction is potentially affected by their habit of reading their native language, but this age period is also an important stage for the early development of Uygur children’s second language (Chinese).

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe portrayal of older characters in television commercials has over time become more varied and positive. This study examines how different portrayals of older characters relate to self-stereotyping, a process through which older individuals apply their beliefs about older people in general to themselves and behave accordingly. The study thereby seeks to connect, as few have previously done, cultural studies and critiques of media portrayals with psychological studies of the effects of self-stereotyping. Sixty participants aged 65–75 years were primed with television commercials that portrayed older characters in different ways: ‘warm and incompetent’, ‘warm and competent’, and ‘cold and competent’. It was hypothesised that priming with warm/incompetent portrayals would have a negative effect on memory performance because such representations match the dominant stereotype, and that the effect would occur only among older people who identify with their own age group. It was found that the participants who identified with their own age group did indeed show impaired memory performance after priming with warm/incompetent portrayals, but also that the same effect was found after priming with warm/competent portrayals. The findings are discussed in terms of resistance against stereotyping by older individuals themselves as well as by media producers.

Abstract:
The effects of different storage conditions, light exposure, temperature and different commercially available cork stoppers on the phenolic, volatile and sensorial profile of Verdejo wines were studied. Two natural corks of different visual quality and a microgranulated cork stopper were investigated over one year at two different storage conditions. One simulating light exposure and temperature in retail outlets and the other simulating optimal cellar conditions (darkness and 12 °C). The wines stored under commercial conditions showed greater losses of total and free SO2 and higher levels of brown-yellowish tones, related to the oxidation of flavan-3-ols. Although these wines underwent a decrease in the total content of stilbenes, a significant increase in trans-piceid was observed. In addition, these wines suffered important changes in their volatile and sensory profile. Volatile compounds with fruity and floral aromas decreased significantly, while volatile compounds related to aged-type characters, as linalool oxides, vitispirane, TDN or furan derivatives increased. Wines stored in darkness at 12 °C underwent minor changes and their sensory profiles were similar to wine before bottling. The high-quality natural corks and microgranulated corks better preserved the quality of the white wines from a sensory point of view. These results showed that temperature and light exposure conditions (diffuse white LEDs and 24 ± 2 °C) in retail outlets considerably decrease the quality of bottled white wines and, consequently, their shelf life, due to the premature development of aged-type characters.

Abstract:
<p>“Nettles” is a short story by the famous contemporary Canadian female writer Alice Munro. It is a multi-thematic story since many scholars have done research on its themes from such angles as love and marriage, the perplexity about life and feminism, etc. Nevertheless, few critics have studied it as an initiation story. Thus, by employing textual analysis as the research approach, this article studies “Nettles” from the perspective of an initiation story in terms of its content, characters and structure. Finally, the research draws the conclusion that “Nettles” is a typical initiation story about a middle-aged woman, depicting how she turns from a spiritually immature woman into a mature one.</p>

Abstract:
The paper surveys the behavior and psychophysiological responses (electroencephalographic power modulations of the alpha and beta rhythms) in 16 boys and 33 girls aged from 1.5 to 3.5 years when they were distributing reward tokens (carton cookies) among the toy characters who previously demonstrated proand antisocial behavior (rendering help and causing harm, respectively). The individual way of distributing the reward was translated into a moral evaluation index (MEI) for each child. When children were distributing the reward tokens, an increase in power, relative to the baseline, was registered for theta rhythm in the prefrontal, frontal and occipital cortex regions, and for beta rhythm in the temporal and occipital regions. Besides, those children who tended to give a bigger reward to the good-acting toy character (i.e., having higher MEI) showed a significantly greater increase in beta rhythm power compared to the children with lower MEI. The reason for that might be that children with higher MEI engage their cognitive resources into making socially significant decisions more effectively and adequately process emotionally significant information.

Abstract:
Abstract. This study aimed to investigate the relations among the pre- and post-slaughter traits of American bronze turkeys. Birds were raised under three different lighting regimes. Pre-slaughter traits were measured when the birds were 15-, 20-, and 30-weeks of age. Canonical correlation analysis showed that as the birds aged the relations among the pre- and post-slaughter characters became more pronounced. Coefficients of determination (R2) were 63.6-82.8% when pre-slaughter characteristics were measured at the 15th week, 84.8–94.6% at the 20th week, and 91.3–99.1% at the 30th week, respectively.

Abstract:
Children aged between 5 and 10 years were shown photographs of familiar TV personalities, presenters, and celebrities for immediate recognition (naming). The pictures were of whole faces, outer features only (hair, chin, ears), or inner features (eyes, nose, mouth). Only the oldest group (9–10 years) resembled adults in recognising these familiar faces more efficiently from internal than external parts. In the youngest children (5–6 years) there were some indications that the outer face features were more salient, particularly when cartoon characters were included in the array.

Abstract:
The tendency to form first impressions from facial appearance emerges early in development. One route through which these impressions may be learned is parent-child interaction. In Study 1, 24 parent-child dyads (children aged 5–6 years, 50% male, 83% White British) were given four computer generated faces and asked to talk about each of the characters shown. Study 2 (children aged 5–6 years, 50% male, 92% White British) followed a similar procedure using images of real faces. Across both studies, around 13% of conversation related to the perceived traits of the individuals depicted. Furthermore, parents actively reinforced their children’s face-trait mappings, agreeing with the opinions they voiced on approximately 40% of occasions across both studies. Interestingly, although parents often encouraged face-trait mappings in their children, their responses to questionnaire items suggested they typically did not approve of judging others based on their appearance.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop a children's version of the Cantonese Hearing in Noise Test (CHINT-C). This was accomplished in two stages. First, a total of 120 sentences understood by children aged 6-7 years were selected from the original pool of CHINT sentences and were grouped into 12 lists, each containing 10 sentences composed of 10 characters. Following this, 260 primary and secondary school children, with ages ranging from 6 to 17 years, and 21 adults of age 18 or older were administered the CHINT-C to determine its reliability/validity, normative data, and age-specific correction factors. The result showed good interlist reliability, and test–retest reliability for the CHINT-C. The speech perception skills assessed using the CHINT-C do not reach adult level until after 11-13 years of age. Correction factors were established that could be used to determine age-specific norms for the evaluation of speech intelligibility of children in various sound fields.

Bagiu, Lucian Vasile. "Amândoi by Liviu Rebreanu: multicultural settings and sources of suspense." Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies 4, no. 1 (May 13, 2021): 87–110. http://dx.doi.org/10.35824/sjrs.v4i1.22272.

Abstract:
The article looks into the multicultural settings of Liviu Rebreanu’s novel “Amândoi” (Both) by briefly examining the representation of its main, minor or incidental characters, either intelligentsia or common people. Ethnicity, social and professional statuses are considered as elements of multiculturalism. The continuous increase of suspense, the open ending, the parody in the undertone, and the development of the intrigue in an original multicultural context are presented further on. The various rumours arising from the townspeople’s own hypotheses about the murders of the aged Dăniloiu provide the opportunity to present the detective genre, which Rebreanu introduced in Romanian literature, suggesting a disguised satire of the type. The archaisms and the regional words of the novel are laboriously registered and underlined in terms of usage, etymology and linguistic connectivity, with the purpose of showing the multicultural flavour by means of a multilingual approach. The essay indicates that all characters use archaisms and local words, notwithstanding their social status or aspirations, a detail that puts in perspective the cultural configuration of the provincial town life, which Rebreanu is very aware of.
