Kirk, Joyce, and n/a. "Portrayal of aged characters in Australian award-winning children's novels 1946-1985." University of Canberra. Library & Information Studies, 1988. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20050711.143505.

Abstract:
The study investigated the nature of the portrayal of aged characters in children's novels which won Children's Book Council of Australia's awards in the period from 1946 to 1985. By means of content analysis, the demographic, personal and behavioural characteristics of aged characters were identified on a thirty-four item checklist. From these characteristics a portrayal score was derived to represent the extent of variation in the depiction of aged characters in the novels examined. Analysis of variance tests indicated that the level of variation in portrayal scores was significantly related to the position of importance of aged characters in novels. The portrayal of aged characters did not vary according either to the approach to story adopted in Australian award-winning novels, or to the period in which the award was granted. It seems that although aged characters taken as a whole in the novels studied display the variety of characteristics attributed to aged people in the literature of gerontology, individually many of these aged characters are depicted in a somewhat limited way. There is evidence to suggest that aged characters in Australian award-winning children's novels do not adequately reflect the demographic characteristics of aged people in the Australian population. In terms of range of social settings in which they are depicted is restricted. So too, is the range of behaviours in which they engage. This rather limited depiction of aged characters means that readers of Australian award-winning children's novels are presented with a restricted and unrealistic view of the aged and of the condition of being aged. If children's novels serve as one of the socialisation agents for young people, then the limited portrayal of aged characters presented in those novels may be a cause for concern, especially as there are few indications that the depiction of aged characters generally in more recent award-winning novels has become more varied and realistic.

Snyder, Tara. "NOT QUITE THE INGéNUE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MIDDLE-AGED FEMALE CHARACTER IN MUSICAL THEATRE." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4085.

Full text
Abstract:
Not Quite the Ingénue: The Development of the Middle-Aged Female Character in Musical Theatre is an exploration of the influences which have defined the function of middle-aged female characters within the musical theatre genre. This author was cast in the role of Arlene MacNalley, a forty-three year old woman, in the University of Central Florida's fall 2006 production of the musical Baby. Preparation for performance of this thesis role required identification of the traits and factors which would be vital for a realistic and relevant portrayal of Arlene. This document provides the reader with a working definition of middle age. It also furnishes a sampling of types, or stereotypes, of middle age female characters in musicals. The major thrust of the document emphasizes researching and understanding the importance of key socio-economic events' influence on the creation, direction, or depiction of middle-aged female characters. Three distinct characters are used to develop this theory, Aunt Eller in Oklahoma!, Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! and Arlene MacNalley in Baby. Further analysis within the thesis details essential differences between the original version of Arlene and the updated 2006 version of Arlene portrayed in the University of Central Florida's production of Baby. Conclusions drawn from the research, performance and writing processes indicate an increasing significance for the middle age female character as the genre of musical theatre continues to develop.

Rosamond, Emily. "Economies of character (or, character in the age of big data)." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2016. http://research.gold.ac.uk/17825/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the age of big data, character becomes a newly foregrounded object – and product – of scrutiny. New credit scoring methods, which draw on big data analytics, claim to paint rich, nuanced pictures of prospective borrowers’ “true characters.” Micro-entrepreneurs, such as hosts on Airbnb, trade in reputation-images, seeking the best possible ratings and reviews in an online marketplace built on highly visible metrics. Surveillance apparatuses (both governmental and corporate) place ever more emphasis on propensity, analyzing not what a person has done so much as what she might do in future. In doing this, such apparatuses construct, enforce and enact new ways to hold people accountable for their represented, future selves – and to the characters understood to link their present selves to those futures. How might artists best respond to new social and economic pressures placed on character (as a concept governing representations of particularity and propensity) in the age of big data? What can be learned from contemporary art about the new economies of character, given art’s long-standing, privileged relationship to the production and circulation of its artists’ and subjects’ (perceived and represented) “characters”? Examining a wide range of artworks – including some recent works that respond directly to big data, but also many more that, more broadly, anticipate its perceptual politics – I argue that a significant response to such problems can be found in works that disturb the distinction between embedded, first person perspectives and so-called objective, external viewpoints on their subjects. Representations that trouble the distinction between shared and first-person perspectives enact the tension between privacy and sharing that has become increasingly vital to speculative market logics linking character to finance. The shared/private space of the disturbed first-person view lends perceptual logic to the personalization of prediction afforded by big data, and stages contemporary conflicts between privacy and sharing, quantities of data and qualitative perception.

Robinson, Elizabeth. "The influence of superhero characters on moral judgment in school-age children." Thesis, Alfred University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3618692.

Full text
Abstract:

Social learning has been shown to have a significant impact on moral development. Research has established that the progression of moral development is consistent and universal. Several factors can impact the rate at which children progress through the moral stages. Children's moral reasoning can be shaped by observations of media characters. Due to their recent resurgence in popular culture and the media, as well as their consistent popularity with children, superheroes have been identified as potential social models of morality. In a sample of 108 fifth grade students, a significant positive correlation was revealed between superhero knowledge and exposure. The sample was divided by gender due to significant differences in superhero knowledge and exposure as well as level of moral judgment. A linear multiple regression for the males approached but did not reach significance. A linear multiple regression for females also failed to reach significance. Limitations of the current study and implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to investigate the function and development of non-player characters (NPC) in the TV/computer game Dragon Age: Origins. The NPCs are analysed in order to see if their development is affected by the player character’s (PC) background and interactions. The game’s ethics is also investigated by studying how the NPCs treat the PC and what significance they give to his background and actions. The results show that the NPCs are affected by the PC’s interactions, and furthermore, that they are round characters, which is unusual in TV/computer games. The NPC Alistair and the PC are vital for the game’s story, while the NPCs Leliana and Morrigan have a moral and psychological function. The NPCs are moral indicators and by either opposing or accepting the PC’s actions they show their own personality. The game’s norm is created by the player/PC. Also, the game sheds light on the player’s moral actions and gives the player a chance to reflect over his/her choices and the consequences thereof. The results give way to a discussion on how games like Dragon Age: Origins can be used in learning. Through interactions and by letting the player project his/her own identity onto the PC, TV/computer games can show the consequences of actions. Since the player is not only told the story, but ‘lives’ it, the moral choices faced in the game make the player practice being responsible and facing moral dilemmas as if in real life, hence enriched by new experiences.

Abstract:
This paper takes a look at two non-player characters in the game Dragon Age Origins and analyzes if their dialogues spoken are contributing to making the characters examined complex and also seeing if the dialogues spoken on a specific topic are being consistent. That the characters are having the same view on the topic does not matter to any other non-player characters to whom they speak. Thirty dialogues are being analyzed. Fifteen of them are delivered by the character Alistair and the other fifteen by the character Leliana. As an analyzing tool, Paul Grice's maxim of quantity and maxim of manner has been used. The conclusion suggests how Paul Grice's maxims could be used as a helping tool when writing dialogue for games.

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF MELISSA NORRIS, for the Master of Science degree in Communication Disorders and Science, presented on March 15, 2010, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: SUBJECT PRONOUNS USED BY CHARACTERS IN TELEVISION SHOWS TARGETING PRESCHOOLERS AND THEIR AGE APPROPRIATENESS. MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Valerie Boyer This was an investigation comparing the accuracy and type of subject pronouns used by characters in two television shows targeting the preschool demographic, Sesame Street and Barney and Friends. The first 100 opportunities for pronoun use in five episodes of each show were transcribed. The subject pronouns were classified as either correct, substitution, or omission. Subject pronouns were also analyzed by person and singular vs. plural tense. The study found that both shows have high subject pronoun use accuracy. While there was a difference between the numbers of correct use, substitution, and omission, the numbers possessed no statistical significance. Sesame Street used significantly more singular and second person pronouns, while Barney and Friends used significantly more plural pronouns. This was an initial investigation with a small sample size. Further research should examine an increased sample size and begin to expand the scope of syntactic analysis.

Graham, Jamey Elizabeth. "Character before the Novel: Representing Moral Identity in the Age of Shakespeare." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10250.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the modern concept of literary character was an unintended consequence of Renaissance moral poetics. The evolution of "character" as a term of literary analysis, from the rediscovery of Aristotle's Poetics in sixteenth-century Italy to the establishment of modern English usage in the late seventeenth century, is the focus of the first half of my work. Aristotle invented a theory of mimetic realism whereby the representation of types of character renders transparent the moral ideology operative in a culture. By placing types into a plot revealing how they do or do not conduce to human flourishing, the Aristotelian poet engages in ideological critique. As I claim, Renaissance humanists revived the form of the Aristotelian character type yet looked to the ethics of Christian Neo-Platonism or Neo-Stoicism to ground any ideological critique. The result was an array of eclectic accounts of poetic character's relation to the political subject. Through close examinations of three authors in the second half of my work, I elucidate the internal tensions and creative opportunities posed by such accounts. Michel de Montaigne's statements concerning the representation of moral character in the Essais test various criticisms and partial recuperations of Stoic-Aristotelian epideixis. I argue that Montaigne eventually attaches to the humanist image of the inspired poet, because poetic inspiration provides a model of heuristic utterance that avoids the aggression of political factions in France. In a chapter devoted to Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, I argue that the Neo-Platonic metaphysics taken for granted by Spenser in the "Letter to Raleigh" implies a more comprehensive hermeneutics of allegorical character than either the "Letter" or existing scholarship acknowledges. Interpreting Spenser's representations of the "morall vertues, as Aristotle hath devised" through the lens of this hermeneutics brings us closer to the experience of Spenser's contemporaries reading his poem. In my final chapter, I study William Shakespeare's thoughtful deployment of a Ciceronian model of exemplarity. I argue that in the character of Henry V, Shakespeare unmasks the ideology of patriotism and historical triumphalism shared by Cicero and the Tudor regime.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to provide historical and literary contexts for elderly characters from English play-texts c.1580 to 1625. Its primary aim, from a literary perspective, is to draw attention to the ways that a better understanding of elderly characterisation can enrich the appreciation of much-studied play-texts, and to indicate some interesting features of more obscure ones. Its secondary aim is to suggest the value, for social historians of old age in early modern England, of play-texts as social evidence. I have examined most of the published extant play-texts of the period, and have found approximately 150 of these to be relevant (the most important of these are listed in the Appendix). Because of the problems of handling all aspects of such a large amount of material, I have chosen to consider the plays chiefly as texts to be read, with little reference to their performative aspects. However, I analyse the dramas as literary as well as social documents. Specific plays provide illustrations for observations and support for various hypotheses about dramatic representations of the elderly. In some instances, I address plays which have received little critical attention. The thesis falls into two parts. In the first three chapters, I discuss the socio-historical, cultural and non-dramatic literary contexts for representations of elderly men and women in play-texts. In chapters four through seven, I examine elderly characters in specific role or relationship categories: as sovereigns and magistrates, in sexual and marital relationships, and as parents. In the final chapter, I offer a detailed analysis of The Old Law by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley.

Venables, Adrian. "The changing character of power projection and maritime security in a digital age." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/87548/.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to fully understand the composition and properties of cyberspace and successfully exploit its potential is now regarded as being an essential component in the economic success and prestige of modern networked societies. This dependence has resulted in cyberspace being utilised to project national power and influence and is a key component in the establishment and maintenance of international relationships, trade, and security. Although providing both opportunities and threats in terms of a nation’s foreign policy and more broadly in the defence of a nation’s critical national infrastructure, the relationship between the maritime and cyber environments is one that is neither well researched or understood, but is becoming increasingly important. This thesis examines how the properties of these two environments can be harnessed to project power and influence over a target audience through three research objectives. The first is to introduce a novel three-dimensional model of cyberspace optimised to better understand how its properties and attributes can be measured in terms of power projection and to demonstrate that the environment does not exhibit universal characteristics but that its structure and use may differ at the source and destination of a cyberpower campaign. The second is to investigate the close relationship and interdependence between the maritime and cyber environments within the context of power and security leading to the new concept of maritime cyberspace. Finally, by classifying cyberattacks as acts of intelligence gathering, sabotage, or subversion, the third objective develops a more nuanced and complex appreciation of how power can be projected in maritime cyberspace to reach a target audience. The thesis concludes by reflecting on the usefulness and applicability of these three objectives and how they go beyond current thinking to enable the UK’s defence cyber doctrine to be re-examined and expanded to incorporate these new ideas.

Rock glaciers are tongue-shaped or lobate masses of rock debris which occur below cliffs and talus in many alpine regions. They are best developed in continental alpine climates where it is cold enough to preserve a core or matrix of ice within the rock mass but insufficiently snowy to produce true glaciers. Previous reports have identified and briefly described several rock glaciers in the Olympic Mountains, Washington {Long 1975a, pp. 39-41; Nebert 1984), but no detailed integrative study has been made regarding the geomorphic character, age,and distribution of these features.

Pereira, Lucie. "Representing Éire : the transmission of the Deirdre legend from the Middle Ages to 1910." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2007. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:b47f05bb-592f-4fb8-81a4-f806c5a06f06.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the transmission of the Deirdre legend in adaptations from the earliest written sources to the versions of the writers of the early twentieth century Irish Literary Revival. Its aim is to trace the way that the refashioning of the story is informed by the cultural and political contexts within which each writer was working, as well as the more personal and aesthetic motivations behind the various adaptations. The texts chosen for close study represent key moments in the transmission process, both for their treatment of the legend and for the specific context to which this treatment responds. After an introduction dealing with the medieval versions, the thesis is divided into six chapters which chart these key moments in chronological order, ending with J. M. Synge's play Deirdre of the Sorrows, published in 1910. Part of the conclusion is given over to tracing the legend's fate in adaptations since the advent of Irish independence. The chronological framework adopted allows a new perspective to emerge which reveals that the Deirdre legend provided a means of reflecting on the various cultural and political conflicts in which Irish identity has been implicated. The thesis demonstrates that the ancient Irish material was used to valorise the writers' contemporary Irish or Scottish culture at times when this culture was under threat, and that following independence the connection between Deirdre and Eire largely disappeared. The particular use to which the legend was put therefore depended on two factors: the specific conflicts with which each writer was engaging and the various connections which they perceived between the present and the mythical past.

Abstract:
The visual appearance of video game characters carries great importance in regards to how a player perceives them. This also holds true for characters that are meant to represent the player in games, their avatars. In this thesis, the topic of preferences regarding visual appearance in relation to age of player avatars is explored. Interviews were held with participants from two age demographics in order to find potential differences and analyse them. The two age demographics consisted of middle aged swedes and young adult swedes. In the interviews, the respondents were given choices between eight different characters sketches. These eight sketches consisted of two groups, one meant to appear as being in the same age group as the young adult swedes and one meant to appear as being part of the middle aged swedes age group. After having made their choices, the respondents were asked to explain the motivation behind them. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the thought process that fueled their answers, the respondents were also prompted to answer question regarding their gaming habits, and their preferences in characters in other mediums than games. Results from the interviews indicated that there were trends in the choices made by the participants that differed between the two demographics. A majority of the demographic consisting of young adult swedes chose characters that were designed to appear closer to their age. Similarly, a majority of the middle aged demographic chose characters that were designed to appear closer to their age group. In short, a majority of the participants from both demographics showed a preference towards characters that were closer to their own age group.

Abstract:
SW Borneo is the southeastern promontory of Sundaland the continental core of SE Asia, previously assumed to be the oldest part of Borneo. The rocks in SW Borneo are the Pinoh Metamorphic Group (PMG) and granitoids of the Schwaner batholith . The PMG was undated, but previous authors have interpreted it to be Permo-Carboniferous or older. Previous K-Ar studies of granitoid rocks yielded ages between 112 and 75 Ma. U-Pb zircon dating of two granite samples recorded ages between 86 to 79 Ma, and one xenocryst age of 152 Ma. SW Borneo has been widely assumed to be a crustal fragment which was rifted from the Indochina-China margin and translated to its current location by the Permo-Carboniferous. Recent ly an alternative model has proposed that it was rifted from the NW Australian margin and translated to its current location by the mid-Cretaceous. This study has involved detailed fieldwork, with petrographic, geochemical, metamorphic petrology, U-Pb and Ar-Ar geochronology studies. The aims of the project were to: 1. Determine petrographic and geochemical characteristics of Schwaner granitoids. 2. Constrain age of emplacement.of the Schwaner batholith. 3. Identify protoliths and style of metamorphism of PMG rocks. 4. Date protolit hs and metamorphic history of the PMG. 5. Determine the role of SW Borneo in the tectonic evolution of Sundaland. Granitoids in SW Borneo are I-type. In the Southern Schwaner Mountains (SSZ) they are withinplate granitoids, typically alkali-granites, with U-Pb zircon ages of c. 186 and 76 Ma. In the Northern Schwaner Mountains (NSZ) they are arc-related granitoids, typically tonalites and granodiorites. U-Pb zircon ages show four significant age populations of c. 112, 98, 84, and 76 Ma. The PMG comprises metamorphosed pe lites, quartzites and basalts, which formed a thick volcanic-sediment pile. Metapelites are hornfelses, phyllites and schists. Low pressure regional metamorphism (c. 3-4 kbar, 500-625°C) with localised contact metamorphism resulted from intrusion of granitoid rocks. Later shear zones cut older metamorphic fabrics. U-Pb dating of zircon shows metamorphic protoliths of the PMG are younger than 130 Ma. Ar-Ar geochronology of biotite and white mica indicate that peak regional metamorphism took place at c.110 Ma. Post-metamorphic shearing took place at 25 Ma.

Scorrar, Brendan Alfred. "The age and character of alteration and mineralization at the Buckhorn Gold Skarn, Okanogan County, Washington, USA." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43178.

Full text
Abstract:
Located in Okanogan County, Washington, USA the Buckhorn mine is one of the largest gold skarns in North America (2.15 Mt at 14 ppm Au). Buckhorn is hosted in Permian Anarchist Group metasedimentary rocks and Jurassic Elise Formation metavolcanic rocks. Monzodiorite comagmatic with the metavolcanic rocks is Jurassic in age (192.4 Ma) confirming the correlation. Two suites of granitoids intrude the local stratigraphy. The Middle Jurassic (170.4 Ma) post-accretionary Buckhorn Intrusive Suite is genetically related to skarn alteration and gold mineralization and comprised of a granodiorite stock, marginal diorite, and several generations of dikes. The Eocene Roosevelt Intrusive Suite (50.5 Ma) is comprised of a small (~0.03 km2) granodiorite stock that post-dates skarn alteration and gold mineralization. Skarn alteration is zoned from dominantly magnetite-garnet in the proximal Magnetic Mine, to equal portions of magnetite-garnet-pyroxene in the Gold Bowl, and pyroxene dominated in the distal Southwest Ore-Zone. The Southwest Ore-Zone contains the majority of the gold mineralization and consists of massive calcic, Fe-rich, reduced skarn alteration along a low-angle shear zone at the contact between the carbonate metasedimentary rocks and the overlying metavolcanic rocks. Skarn alteration is divided into three categories based on the prograde mineralogy: pyroxene, garnet and magnetite skarn. Pyroxene skarn is further subdivided based on the retrograde mineralogy: amphibole-pyroxene, magnetite-pyroxene, and epidote-pyroxene skarn. Gold mineralization occurs in fractures in and intercrystalline space between skarn minerals and is intimately associated with bismuth. Re-Os geochronology of molybdenite bearing skarn confirms the Middle Jurassic age of skarn alteration and gold mineralization (162.8-165.5 Ma). Based on the mineralogy, the hydrothermal fluids that caused prograde alteration were between 430-500° C, fO2=-25 to -20, fS2=-8 to -4.5, and near neutral pH. Fluids responsible for retrograde alteration were cooler (300-430° C), more reduced (fO2<-26), and had lower sulfur fugacity (fS2=-15 to -6). Gold mineralization occurred at the end of retrograde alteration. Gold was transported as bisulfide complexes in even cooler (241-300°C) and more reduced (fO2=-42 to -36) fluids than earlier retrograde alteration. Gold was scavenged by a bismuth melt and precipitated due to cooling and local retrograde oxidation reactions.

Abstract:
Between the fourth and the seventh centuries CE, Christian patrons erected thousands of churches, chapels, and monasteries in cities and villages across the Mediterranean, decorating the apses, walls and floors of many of these structures with figural and geometric mosaics. These late antique Christian mosaics have been studied for their iconography, their Graeco-Roman components, and as evidence for the religious beliefs of newly-Christian patrons. However, art historians largely have ignored the ways that texts, inscribed within the visual field and composed of the same mosaic material, functioned as images in Christian spaces. For the first time, this thesis assembles the foundations of a comprehensive catalogue of early Christian mosaic inscriptions, places them back into the physical spaces in which they were meant to be read, and analyzes how these texts functioned both verbally and visually for the late antique reader/viewer, against the backdrop of Graeco-Roman traditions. I first examine the ekphrastic components of Christian inscriptions and look more closely at the different ways in which texts work with and against images and spaces, encouraging the viewer to react physically and mentally. Second, I study the language of light used by the inscriptions, and argue that this language linked text to the material of mosaic and enabled patrons to make complex statements about their cultural erudition and religious affiliation. Third, I investigate the functions and visual forms of short tituli which label scenes or name figures to simplify, authenticate or transform static images into narratives in motion. Finally, I turn to the frames of the inscriptions and contend that different forms conveyed powerful visual arguments. By writing these texts back into their mosaics, this thesis argues that texts and images were inseparable in the period, and that text written into images performed and played in more complex ways than has been previously thought.

Beer, Jenay Michelle. "Recognizing facial expression of virtual agents, synthetic faces, and human faces: the effects of age and character type on emotion recognition." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/33984.

Full text
Abstract:
An agent's facial expression may communicate emotive state to users both young and old. The ability to recognize emotions has been shown to differ with age, with older adults more commonly misidentifying the facial emotions of anger, fear, and sadness. This research study examined whether emotion recognition of facial expressions differed between different types of on-screen agents, and between age groups. Three on-screen characters were compared: a human, a synthetic human, and a virtual agent. In this study 42 younger (age 28-28) and 42 older (age 65-85) adults completed an emotion recognition task with static pictures of the characters demonstrating four basic emotions (anger, fear, happiness, and sadness) and neutral. The human face resulted in the highest proportion match, followed by the synthetic human, then the virtual agent with the lowest proportion match. Both the human and synthetic human faces resulted in age-related differences for the emotions anger, fear, sadness, and neutral, with younger adults showing higher proportion match. The virtual agent showed age-related differences for the emotions anger, fear, happiness, and neutral, with younger adults showing higher proportion match. The data analysis and interpretation of the present study differed from previous work by utilizing two unique approaches to understanding emotion recognition. First, misattributions participants made when identifying emotion were investigated. Second, a similarity index of the feature placement between any two virtual agent emotions was calculated, suggesting that emotions were commonly misattributed as other emotions similar in appearance. Overall, these results suggest that age-related differences transcend human faces to other types of on-screen characters, and differences between older and younger adults in emotion recognition may be further explained by perceptual discrimination between two emotions of similar feature appearance.

This essay explores the character development of Ronan Lynch in Maggie Stiefvater's The Dream Thieves (2013) with the intention of showing the process of self-acceptance through the narratological concepts character and characterization as well as Young Adult literature research focused on coming-of-age in terms of self-discovery and sexual identity. It was found that Ronan does reach self-acceptance. In terms of characterization, this can be seen through his relationships with other characters and his role in the narrative. When it comes to coming-of-age, his self-acceptance is seen through his self-discovery in regards to sexuality, and especially through his identity construction in relation to his supernatural ability.

Abstract:
Characterization in Pulitzer-awarded features and traditional features was measured using a characterization typology developed by the author. Although some of the results were statistically constrained by a small n, those results which were statistically significant reflect that what separates Pulitzer-winning features from regular features are those elements of characterization particular to scene: a character's distinctive physical characteristics, clothing and possessions; the setting and environment as it defines a character; a physical description of character that is not lineament nor habitual posture or expression but bodily appearance in the immediate moment; a character's movements and actions, facial expressions, words, and thoughts. In an era when the predicted demise of newspapers is more fact than fiction, the reader's experience with newspapers is paramount. Crucial to the news reading experience is the reader's enjoyment: how "I" experienced a story through empathy, parasocial interaction, and/or identification. Perhaps a solution to newspapers' loss of readership is scene: within scene, fear, anguish, exhilaration, and joy are not only the experiences of the characters, but also that of the reader's.

Abstract:
All of Hilda Hilsts prose books feature aged characters, and eroticism is one of the main strengths of her literature. This work seeks to relate these two elements and, at the same time, offer an overview of the Hilstian prose and some of its most recurrent issues. The construction of characters, the images of emptiness and the characterization of the authors style are axes that structure each one of the three chapters, in which questions such as the construction of literary space and the philosophical investigations contained in the fictional text are also addressed. In dialogue with such essayists as Simone de Beauvoir, Georges Bataille, Edward Said, among others, this dissertation departs from the understanding of old age and eroticism as aesthetic elaborations to seek the images and formal operations used by Hilst in her fiction.

Abstract:
This paper aims to examine the manifesto of Anders Behring Breivik and put it in thecontext of modern society and the situation that the individual is in.Using Erich Fromms thoughts about freedom and escape mechanisms, Thomas Ziehesnarcissism and cultural and Giddens theory about self-identity in the late modern age I try to reach explanations about how Breivik could reach the conclussions he did.The analysis of a part of the manifesto, which is the papers material, about which valuesBreivik wants to defend and which the enemies are that threatened these. The result is that there are a number of enemies which threaten these values that Breivik wants to defend and that an analysis from a individual-, cultural and system perspectives is required to reach a satisfying explaination.Breivik is understood from the view of the authoritarian character who only sees human relations as positions of dominance or subordinance, through the cultural presets that exist in society and through not developing the trust that Giddens sees as the foundations on which humans stand to cope with life in increasingly risky enviroment.

Abstract:
The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is the most numerous and widespread duck in the northern hemisphere and a model species in ecology and harvest management. Migration is a crucial life stage for many birds and understanding the drivers of migration has important implications for conservation biology and assessment of animal population responses to global changes. Furthermore, mallard migration is a fundamental determinant of the epidemiology of many diseases of major relevance for both animal and human health. For example, it is the reservoir host for influenza A viruses (IAV), a widespread zoonosis causing mortality and economic damage. Improved knowledge of mallard behaviour during migration and the impacts of infection in mallards is needed to determine the role of wild birds in global IAV dynamics. This thesis focuses on mallard stopover ecology, an explicitly important part of the annual life cycle that is not well understood. The study area was southern Öland, SE Sweden, where mallard stopover behaviour was scrutinized by a combination of telemetry and ringing data analyses. Specifically, habitat preferences, movements, and emigration decisions were studied in-depth. Potential effects of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAIV) infection on movement parameters were also investigated. Radio-tracking revealed that stopover mallards adhered to a strict diel pattern, in which they spent the days resting along the coast, visited crop fields at dawn and dusk, and foraged on inland water bodies during the darkest night hours. Notably, the importance of residual maize, as well as small ephemeral wetlands on the unique alvar steppe habitat that predominates on Öland, was previously unknown. LPAIV infection status did not affect movement behaviour, highlighting the possible risk of spread of IAV from wild mallards to poultry along the migratory flyway. Through capture-mark-recapture modelling, it was confirmed that weather, particularly wind direction, was the most important determinant of departure from the stopover site. In contrast, the body condition of departing mallards was less crucial. Taken together, the research presented in this thesis contributes to improved knowledge about mallard stopover ecology and its role in LPAIV disease dynamics.

This essay looks trough the process of how an actor deals with his own oldness, precisely in the city of São Paulo, in between 1948/49/50 by the time theater (TBC ), radio (Tupi / Diffused ), movie (Vera Cruz ) and television (TV Tupi) connection and the 2006. At the first chapter, the reasons take took the author to choose these theme will be exposed, followed by the purpose and the methodology used in the research. At the second chapter, this paper will presents the concepts of Social Gerontology, old age and the process trough an actor deals with his own oldness and performing arts, playwright and languages of performing arts. At the third chapter the chronology of the main artistic and politician facts related to the old actors in São Paulo during the period of the research will be presented. This period of 58 years will be separated in different phases: Performing Arts and the Modernity, Performing Arts as Social Engagement, Resistance at the Censorship and to the Military Regime, Fights for Amnesty and Redemocratization and Performing Arts by the time of early democracy. The purpose of this is to evidence the participation of who nowadays are the old actors focused in this paper and the role played by them in today's at the social questions. The fourth chapter that's a analysis of this chronology , apportioned well into motifs appurtenant to the performing arts and at the old age. At the considerations endings completes as the old actors today's did not can and must not be considered all of equal : than it is to there are several oldness among them. Considers as well than it is to they are not influential merely now and they always have been social acting. Another closure is, in the last 58 years, the old actor left of having chance to work well into the radio soup operas , but , on the other hand , he saw the opening the doors from the television and the one theater best organised in spite of that difficulties as of in case that hold at the occupation ( and as of age into it ) still they may be unlimited.. The labour contains still , as an addendum , a list of the main theatrical spectacles with old actors stars, as of 2001 the one 2006, and also a list of the more important movies played by old actors at the period between 2003 and 2006 with the names of your interpreters

Abstract:
Considered as one of Chrétien de Troyes’ successors, Raoul de Houdenc joins in the lineage of writers known as "Arthurians" writers. Through his adventure novel Meraugis de Portlesguez, he reinvents the motives highlighted by master Champenois and bestourne the Breton material in an undeniable parodic intention. Through the comparative study of this narrative with Chrétien de Troyes’ novels in verse; but also with the cycle in prose of Lancelot-Graal, we observe how much the Arthurian romantic character shows himself flexible: skilfully playing with a traditional structure (the Round Table with its unchanging guards, the formative wandering, the monsters and the customs that need to be destroyed), the author ridicules the organization of this system so well polished by Chrétien de Troyes (1st part). We will study then the same characters under the angle of the apprenticeship: the eponymous hero, as well as some of the characters who surround him, are constantly evolving beings that the author will make grow up and mature. Through the evolutionary glance of his creatures, Raoul will deliver his own conception of courtesy, a conception that agrees with the one that he gives of the perfect knight of the Dit and of the Roman des Eles, weaving between his two works a remarkable game of echoes (2nd part). Eventually, the houdanesque character creates a mirror with the person of the beginning of the 12th century: his contrasted heroes, and the voice of the author-narrator-character of the Songe d’Enfer; which is in the grip of doubt when faced with contradictory currents of thoughts of his time; fixes the houdanesque writing in the works that blend imagination and reflection (3rd part)

Abstract:
The object of this thesis is to examine the character of the transgressive queen on theSpanish stage of the Golden Age, from a corpus of eight comedias published between 1609 and1653 by well-known dramatists (Virués, Tirso de Molina, Guillén de Castro, Rojas Zorrilla,Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca). The introduction helps to lay the foundations of a thoughtprocess which aims to bring out specific types of queens, inherited figures from a mythological, biblical or historical tradition. Two criteria contributed to selecting the corpus and shaping aplan - the female character’s relationship with power and her ties to violence which inevitablylead her to commit one or more crimes. The chapters in the first part of the study take intoaccount the historical, social and ideological representations of the Queen in line with thegender studies, and analyse examples of sovereigns that are both disturbing and unsettling andyet fascinating. Our key reference is the Queen-King – an excessive character subverting thegender and authority standards and whose role will be exceptional for actresses at the time. Thesecond part looks into the Queen-King access to power, her reign and her tyrannical outbursts. The analysis mainly pertains to the tools of scenography, of distortion but also of rhetoric. Thelast part deals with the psychological, criminal and judicial perspectives of violence, committedby the queens. We claim that some of the deviances occasionally border on madness orirreversible pathologies which find an exceptional outcome on stage, worthy of theseoutstanding women

Abstract:
The character of the wife is a central feature of the epic genre, for which Homer's poems stand as a model in Greek and Latin literature. The major role the feminine eros, especially towards a husband, plays in those works is one of the aspects on which the evolution of epic genericity relies, evolving from one poem to another. During the Flavian Age, Valerius Flaccus and Statius gave two feminine characters a major part in their poems : one is Medea in The Argonautics, the other Argia in Statius' Thebaid. Besides, both poets also illustrate other aspects of husband and wife eros in the Lemnian episode, which stages Hypsipyle as its heroine. From a philosophical point of view, we can see how this emphasized presence of feminine characters matches contemporary philosophers' theories on ethics within marriage, such as Musonius Rufus' thoughts. From the point de view of literature however, considering its setting in the Age of Silver latinity, we can consider this presence as a questioning of epic generic codes, which shows in the way wives are represented, according to the patterns of tragedy and of the Roman elegy, particularly of Ovid's Heroids. Therefore in the wake of three literary traditions - epic, tragedy, elegy -, the role of feminine characters shows the renewal of the epic, which we can fully study by creating criteria of analysis bearing on the notions of genre, genericity and intergenericity

Kuzuoglu, Ulug. "Codes of Modernity: Infrastructures of Language and Chinese Scripts in an Age of Global Information Revolution." Thesis, 2018. https://doi.org/10.7916/D80C6C6B.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the global history of Chinese script reforms—the effort to phoneticize Chinese language and/or simplify the writing system—from its inception in the 1890s to its demise in the 1980s. These reforms took place at the intersection of industrialization, colonialism, and new information technologies, such as alphabet-based telegraphy and breakthroughs in printing technologies. As these social and technological transformations put unprecedented pressure on knowledge management and the use of mental and clerical labor, many Chinese intellectuals claimed that learning Chinese characters consumed too much time and mental energy. Chinese script reforms, this dissertation argues, were an effort to increase speed in producing, transmitting, and accessing information, and thus meet the demands of the industrializing knowledge economy. The industrializing knowledge economy that this dissertation explores was built on and sustained by a psychological understanding of the human subject as a knowledge machine, and it was part of a global moment in which the optimization of labor in knowledge production was a key concern for all modernizing economies. While Chinese intellectuals were inventing new signs of inscription, American behavioral psychologists, Soviet psycho-economists, and Central Asian and Ottoman technicians were all experimenting with new scripts in order to increase mental efficiency and productivity. This dissertation reveals the intimate connections between the Chinese and non-Chinese script engineering projects that were taking place synchronically across the world. The chapters of this work demonstrate for the first time, for instance, that the simplification of Chinese characters in the 1920s and 1930s was intimately connected to the discipline of behavioral psychology in the US. The first generation of Chinese psychologists employed the American psychologists’ methods to track eye movements, count word-frequencies, and statistically analyze the speed of reading, writing, and memorizing in order to simplify and “rationalize” the Chinese writing system in an effort to discipline and optimize mental labor. Other chapters explore the issue of mental and clerical optimization by finding the origins of the Chinese Latin Alphabet (CLA), the mother of pinyin, in hitherto unknown Eurasian connections. The CLA, the pages of this work shows, was the product of a transnational exchange that involved Ottoman and Transcaucasian typographers as well as Russian engineers and Chinese communists who sought efficiency in knowledge production through inventing new scripts. Situating the Chinese script reforms at this global intersection of psychology, economy, and linguistics, this dissertation examines the global connections and forces that turned the human subject into a knowledge worker who was cognitively managed through education, literacy, propaganda, and other measures of organizing information, all of which had the script at the center. The search for efficiency and productivity—the core values of industrialism—lay at the heart of script reforms in China, but this search was inseparable from linguistic orders and political ambitions. Even if writing, transmitting, and learning a phonetic script could theoretically be easier and more efficient than the Chinese characters, the alphabet opened a veritable Pandora’s Box around the issue of selection: given the complex linguistic landscape in China, which speech was a phonetic script supposed to represent? There were myriad languages spoken throughout the empire and the subsequent nation-state, most of which were mutually incomprehensible. Mandarin as spoken in Beijing was different from that spoken in the south, and “topolects” or regional languages such as Min or Cantonese were to Mandarin what Romanian is to English. As a linguistic life-or-death issue, phonetic scripts stood for the infrastructural possibilities and limitations in the representation of speeches. Some scripts, such as Lao Naixuan’s phonetic script composed of more than a hundred signs, were capable of representing multiple Mandarin and non-Mandarin speeches; whereas others, such as Phonetic Symbols that only has thirty-seven syllabic signs, represented only one speech, i.e., Mandarin. Using Mandarin-oriented scripts to transcribe non-Mandarin speeches was like writing English with fifteen letters, hence the acrimonious disputes that fill the pages of this dissertation. Succinctly put, it was at the level of script invention that Chinese and non-Chinese actors engineered different infrastructures not only for laboring minds but also for the social world of Chinese languages. The history of information technologies and knowledge economy in China was thus inseparable from the world of speech and language, as each script offered a new potential to reassemble the written matter and the speaking mind in a different way. “Codes of Modernity” thus conceptualizes the script itself as an infrastructural medium. A script was not merely a passive carrier of information, but an existential artifact. Building on an expanding literature on infrastructures, it endorses the observation that infrastructures, technologies, and the social world around them work in a recursive loop. An infrastructure is not just the physical object that permits the flow of information, goods, ideas, and people, but a sociotechnical product that enables the experience of culture, while imposing constrains on it at the same time. Like electricity grids, transportation systems, and sewage canals, the experience of scripts as infrastructures is the experience of thought worlds. After a long tradition of structuralism and poststructuralism that sought to understand the world through the semiotic prism of language, “Codes of Modernity” argues that it is time for an infrastructuralism that excavates the indispensable media that enable the production of language and thought.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the usability of Chinese character handwriting input for the middle-aged people and the minimum Chinese character handwriting input area on small touchscreen. According to the results of the literature review and pilot study, the experiment was constructed and then the usability about Chinese character handwriting input of the product operation was generalized for middle-aged people. The results indicate that the middle-aged people lay stress on larger handwriting area which facilitated the tasks of handwriting than information display area. Because of small font and glossy touchscreen, the middle-aged people need more time to confirm interface feedbacks and the errors of operation on picking objects and writing Chinese characters than young adults. In addition, it was suggested that the minimum dimension of the Chinese character handwriting area for a small touchscreen to be 11×11 mm.

Edna O'Brien's <> aims to express the fear and desire within every Irish female under sexual repression and religious pressure. However, due to O'Brien's frank treatment of sex and perasive theme of love, Trilogy is categorized as a pornographic penny-romance and is banned from circulation in Ireland. This thesis attempts to read Trilogy from a different perspective. Chapter One indicates that Ireland is governed not by people's free will but by the authority of the Church. Religious pressure dominates every aspect of Irish life. For Irish women, the Church provides no comfort but only fear. Chapter Two discusses Irish women's identification with the colonized Ireland which results in their powerlessness to fight against the unequal relationship between the two sexes. Chapter Three analyzes O'Brien's reformation of Irish female. O'Brien urges Irish women to escape from the patriarchal ideology in order to fracture the myth of ideal Irish womanhood and to find autonomy. The <> is indeed an Irish Bildungsroman. Through the transformation and maturation of two ordinary Irish women, O'Brien presents her feminist voice. She believes that in order to accomplish a dignified self which had been abandoned for centuries, Irish women have no choice but to embark on the quest of rebirth.

"Indos, abjects, exiles : Joseph Conrad's culturally liminal characters in the age of nationalism." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2013-09-1217.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay is an investigation of transnational author Joseph Conrad’s engagement with issues of cultural liminality during the years around the turn of the 20th century. Through an examination of Almayer from Almayer’s Folly, Yanko of “Amy Foster”, and Cornelius from Lord Jim, the common experience of cultural displacement is considered. Conrad placed these three culturally liminal characters in various, carefully constructed social environments. Thus far, these characters have been under investigated in the critical literature, particularly the mixed-culture Almayer and Cornelius. By investigating these three characters and their environments, this essay demonstrates how Conrad depicts cultural displacement in the age of nationalism to be increasingly multifaceted but inevitably disastrous. The essay further reveals the need for more careful critical assessments of the cultural nuances of Conrad’s characters.
