Abstract:
Background: There is an evident change in the colorectal cancer demographic over the period. This change is more marked in the age distribution and location of the tumor. It has practical implications, in regards to develop cancer awareness programs and screening protocols. Keeping in view that Pakistan is one of the countries with a high number of the young population this study is carried out to make a comparative analysis of this trend in our population. Material and methods: Colorectal cancer patients presented in Sindh Institute of urology and transplantation from January 2011 till December 2020 was reviewed retrospectively. All patients were divided into two groups, Group A young age population and Group B old age population. Subgroup analysis of study period was performed to check the progressive change in the trend of stage and clinical characteristics of colorectal cancer patients. Data reviewed from the patient’s files and collected as per Proforma requirement. Result: Total of 612 patients with colorectal cancer presented between 2011 till 2020.Among these patients 243 (39.7%) presented between January 2011 till December 2015. Patients age 50 years and younger were 410 (66.8%). Results showed a statistically significant association between and patient’s age and location of tumor such that left-sided colonic cancer and rectal cancer were more common in the young population. Subgroup analysis according to the study period showed that there is a change in the trend of disease presentation. Right-sided colonic cancer presentation decreased in the younger population over the period while simultaneously left-sided colonic cancer and rectal cancer presentation increased. Conclusion: The incidence of left-sided colonic and rectal cancer has been increased in the younger population over the specified period while there was no association between right-sided colon cancer and age noticed.

Abstract:
A meeting organised by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences focussed on the challenges of developing medicines for older adults. International experts discussed the complexity introduced by polypharmacy and multiple morbidities and how the risk–benefit ratio of a medicine changes as an individual ages. The way in which regulatory authorities are encouraging the development of age-appropriate medicines was highlighted. Examples were provided of the difficulties faced by the older population with some medicinal products and suggestions given as to how the pharmaceutical scientist can build the requirements of the older population into their development of new medicines, as well as improvements to existing ones.

Abstract:
This presentation considers the vulnerability of the upper alimentary and respiratory tracts to environmental insults during aging. A specific example, salivary gland secretion, is discussed. Available data suggest that while aging per se does not affect salivary performance adversely, It does appear to compromise the glands in such a way that older persons are more vulnerable to exogenous factors that can reduce secretory capacity and, consequently, diminish oropharyngeal health.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:To assess the association between age-related macular degeneration and age-related hearing loss in Turkish subjects aged 50 years or older.Study design and setting:Prospective, case–control study within a tertiary university hospital.Subjects and methods:Fifty subjects with age-related macular degeneration and 43 healthy subjects underwent ophthalmological and otolaryngological examination. Statistical analyses were conducted for the poorer eye and ear, comparing age-related hearing loss and pure tone average in the macular degeneration group versus controls. Results:Median pure tone average was significantly poorer in the macular degeneration group (35 dBHL) compared with controls (23 dBHL). In the macular degeneration group, hearing loss was significantly greater in dry type (43 dBHL) than wet type (32 dBHL) cases. There was a significant difference between the prevalence of varying degrees of hearing loss in the macular degeneration versus control groups, being respectively: mild, 50 and 35 per cent; moderate, 20 and 5 per cent; and severe, 6 and 0 per cent. There was a weak, but significant correlation between each patient's visual acuity and pure tone average results (rs = −0.37, p < 0.001).Conclusion:Age-related hearing loss is more common in patients with age-related macular degeneration. Such patients should be questioned regarding hearing difficulty, and referred to an otolaryngologist if appropriate.

Abstract:
Organismal aging is normally accompanied by an increase in the number of senescent cells, growth-arrested metabolic active cells that affect normal tissue function. These cells present a series of characteristics that have been studied over the last few decades. The damage in cellular organelles disbalances the cellular homeostatic processes, altering the behavior of these cells. Lysosomal dysfunction is emerging as an important factor that could regulate the production of inflammatory molecules, metabolic cellular state, or mitochondrial function.

Abstract:
Age-related skin changes can be induced by chronological ageing, manifested in subcutaneous fat reduction, and photo-ageing eliciting increased elastotic substance in the upper dermis, destruction of its fibrilar structure, augmented intercellular substance and moderate inflammatory infiltrate. Forty-five biopsy skin samples of the sun-exposed and sun-protected skin were analyzed. The patients were both males and females, aged from 17 to 81 years. The thickness of the epidermal layers and the number of cellular living layers is greater in younger skin. The amount of keratohyaline granules is enlarged in older skin. Dermoepidermal junction is flattened and the presence of elastotic material in the dermis is pronounced with age. The amount of inflammatory infiltrate is increased, the fibrous trabeculae are thickened in older skin and the atrophy of the hypodermis is observed. Chronological ageing alters the fibroblasts metabolism by reducing their life span, capacity to divide and produce collagen. During ageing, the enlargement of collagen fibrils diminishes the skin elasticity.
