Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Heather Cox Richardson
Throughout the nineteenth century, southern Democrats had one continual objective: to preserve racial hierarchy in their home region. Direct efforts in the 1870s, though, failed to eliminate the threat that Republicans might renew Reconstruction. So, in the 1880s, white southerners in Congress developed an array of softer, less direct approaches. Their goal was to foster reconciliation with white northerners, undercutting support for Reconstruction and securing white supremacy for the South. With one issue more than any other, they succeeded: expansion of the U.S. Navy. Recognizing that global developments and the decrepit state of the U.S. Navy were increasing concern about national defense, Congressman Hilary Abner Herbert (D-AL) positioned himself to become a champion of naval expansion. A former enslaver with no maritime experience, the Confederate colonel leveraged an appointment as chair of the House Committee on Naval Affairs in 1885. Over the next eight years, Herbert established bipartisan and cross-sectional support for naval legislation in the House and spearheaded the most drastic peacetime military buildup Americans had ever seen. The interests of this “Father of the New Navy,” though, were chiefly sectional. For Herbert, militarization was a means to advancing reconciliation and securing white supremacy for the South. He stated this purpose clearly both in private and public. In 1890, he put it into practice. When Republicans introduced legislation to address voting rights in the South, Herbert wielded his reputation for bipartisanship and reconciliation against it, threatening violence and an end to economic unity. On the national level, Herbert’s use of naval expansion to further reconciliation escalated militarization and paved the way for an overseas U.S. empire. In the South, the Alabamian’s efforts helped open the door for a new system of legalized white supremacy that he celebrated as “a final solution of the negro question.”

Abstract:
Decommissioned buildings and structures from the industrial age constitutes a challenge for many municipalities when society and the global economy changes. The transformation of the old sugar mill in Kävlinge originates from that shift – from the production of goods to an information and knowledge based society. How can this type of building be re-programmed as a stimulating place for sharing and acquire knowledge, and at the same time perform well in terms of energy? The sustainable strategies for energy preservation includes a new transparent second skin - a glass corridor facade, which stores the heat from the thermal mass (bricks). It also includes a passive ventilation system, using underground ducts to heat or cool the building depending on season.

Watkins, Dawn Elizabeth. "The protection of high art in a postmodern age." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31080.

Full text
Abstract:
This project considers whether it is possible to define some works of literary or visual art as high art solely by virtue of their inherent qualities, or whether there are factors external to the work which are significant to this process of categorisation. Thereafter the project considers whether it is appropriate to argue that high art as a discrete category should be accorded a value of its own to be defended by the legal system alongside or in preference to other values (particularly freedom of speech), focusing initially upon non-legal arguments which have been put forward in this regard. Thereafter, the project critically analyses the way in which the English legal system has dealt with such issues during the period 1780 to date firstly by analysing the approach of the legislature towards the notion of high art and its protection and secondly, by analysing the approach of the courts in this area. Both the courts' role in enforcing statute law and administering the common law are assessed and the extent to which the courts have acknowledged the free speech principle in relation to artistic and non-artistic matter is given particular consideration. Finally, the project considers those international obligations which influence English law in this area, with particular reference to the European Convention on Human Rights and to the recent inclusion of Article 10, the right to freedom of expression, in the Human Rights Act 1998. The extent to which high art might be afforded greater protection under this new Act is considered, and conclusions are drawn as to whether greater protection should be sought for high art under English law and if so, upon what basis.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was to determine what stressors were experienced by junior high age students (N = 145) and what relationship there was between those stressors and self-esteem. A modified Youth Adaptation Rating Scale (YARS) was utilized to identify the stressors. The Index of Self-Esteem (ISE) was used to measure self-esteem. Among the findings were: a moderate though significant negative correlation between the number of stressors experienced and the adolescent's self-esteem, fifteen of the fifty-five stressors were significantly related to self-esteem, and nine of the stressors were associated with gender.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to examine the relationship between science fiction and its conditions of production, specifically interrogating the genre's articulations of the ideology of modernity as progress. Sf has been characterized variously as a characteristically useful critical engagement with the ideologies of its context and as wholly ideological at the level of form, relying on the authority of a scientific episteme in its "cognitive estrangements," while not obligated to operate within the boundaries of this episteme. As such, the genre is unparalleled in its capacity to articulate ideologies under the guise of a putatively neutral science and reason. However, this same formal action places the genre in the unique position of being able to utilize the authority of a scientific episteme to re-evaluate the putative neutrality of that very scientific episteme. As a result, this study concludes that while the genre's reliance on the external authority of science in "cognitively" organizing its estrangements may make it particularly conducive to articulating ideological technoscience and the ideology of modernity as progress, the genre is characteristically ambivalent in this respect, both at the level of form and as a result of the incongruities between form and narrative. To support my thesis I engage a number of science fictional texts, focusing on Golden Age sf of the mid-20th century, while also branching out into explorations of a variety of 20th and 21st century sf texts, including texts from the pulp era, New Wave, cyberpunk, and post-singularity sf. I analyze within the effects of the conceptual mapping of society in terms of the natural sciences in sf, as well as the ambivalent presence of the robot as a megatextual motif, exploring the relationship of these to the ideology of modernity as progress and the post-scarcity fantasy of global mass consumption prosperity.

Copes, Neil. "High-throughput Screening of Age-related Changes in Caenorhabditis elegans." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5668.

Full text
Abstract:
This project was developed to identify novel methods for high-throughput culturing and screening of C. elegans to investigate age-related metabolic changes and to survey the proteomic and metabolomic factors associated with age-related changes. To accomplish these goals we developed a novel way to grow C. elegans in liquid culture in 96-well microplates for several weeks without suffering significant fluid loss due to evaporation and without needing to shake or unseal the plates for aeration. We also developed methods for assaying the total volume of live C. elegans in microplate cultures using a fluorescence microplate reader and for performing RNAi experiments with dead instead of live bacteria, which allows for the measurement of nematode metabolic parameters without bacterial interference. Using these methods, along with established methods for the global identification of metabolites and proteins by mass spectroscopy, we observed an integrated pattern of changes that occurred at the molecular level in aged C. elegans. Specifically, we found protein changes suggesting muscle dysfunction and sarcopenia, an increase in free fatty acids, a decrease in the S-adenosylmethionine cycle, altered or impaired protein synthesis, changes in free amino acid levels consistent with an increase in cell size, indications of epigenetic changes and alteration of DNA repair, and a shift toward a more oxidizing cellular environment, as well as a decrease in NAD+ relative to NADH. Through the use of an automated RNAi screen targeting potential EF-hand Ca2+ binding proteins, we identified genes that are associated with high culture medium Ca2+ toxicity. In addition, from a screen of X chromosome RNAi clones, we identified clones that partially prevented the age-dependent decline in nematode ATP levels, oxygen consumption, and reductive capacity. The set of genes targeted by these RNAi clones is enriched in both anti-longevity genes and negative regulators of cellular processes and are potential targets for anti-aging interventions.

Young, Tom. "Art in India's 'Age of Reform' : amateurs, print culture, and the transformation of the East India Company, c.1813-1858." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/285900.

Full text
Abstract:
Two images of British India persist in the modern imagination: first, an eighteenth-century world of incipient multiculturalism, of sexual adventure amidst the hazy smoke of hookah pipes; and second, the grandiose imperialism of the Victorian Raj, its vast public buildings and stiff upper lip. No art historian has focused on the intervening decades, however, or considered how the earlier period transitioned into the later. In contrast, Art in India's 'Age of Reform' sets out to develop a distinct historical identity for the decades between the Charter Act of 1813 and the 1858 Government of India Act, arguing that the art produced during this period was implicated in the political process by which the conquests of a trading venture were legislated and 'reformed' to become the colonial possessions of the British Nation. Over two parts, each comprised of two chapters, two overlooked media are connected to 'reforms' that have traditionally been understood as atrophying artistic production in the subcontinent. Part I relates amateur practice to the reform of the Company's civil establishment, using an extensive archive associated with the celebrated amateur Sir Charles D'Oyly (1781-1845) and an art society that he established called the Behar School of Athens (est.1824). It argues that rather than citing the Company's increasing bureaucratisation as the cause of a decline in fine art patronage, it is crucial instead to recognise how amateur practice shaped this bureaucracy's collective identity and ethos. Part II connects the production and consumption of illustrated print culture to the demographic shifts that occurred as a result of the repeal of the Company's monopolistic privileges in 1813 and 1833, focusing specifically on several costume albums published by artists such as John Gantz (1772-1853) and Colesworthy Grant (1813-1880). In doing so, it reveals how print culture provided cultural capital to a transnational middle class developing across the early-Victorian Empire of free trade. Throughout each chapter, the gradual undermining of the East India Company's sovereignty by a centralising British State is framed as a prerequisite to the emergence of the nation-state as the fundamental category of modern social and political organisation. Art in India's 'Age of Reform' therefore seeks not only to uncover the work and biographies of several unstudied artists in nineteenth-century India, but reveals the significance of this overlooked art history to both the development of the modern British State, and the consequent demise of alternative forms of political corporation.

Elhilaly, Mohamed A. "Influence of Ultra-high Temperature Process Parameters on Age Gelation of Mille Concentrate." DigitalCommons@USU, 1994. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5412.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of ultra-high temperature process parameters on age gelation of milk concentrate. Skim milk was concentrated to 2X (volume reduction) using reverse osmosis. The milk concentrate was preheated at 75 or 90°C for 20 or 50 s and UHT-processed at 138 or 145°C for 4 or 16 s. Sterilizing methods used were direct steam injection and indirect plate heat exchanger. The samples were aseptically collected in presterilized plastic containers and stored at 15 or 35°C. At 15°C storage temperature, the steam-injected samples gelled in 5 months when 4 s UHT time was used. When UHT time was increased to 16 s, the samples gelled in 6 months. Of the samples that were UHT processed by indirect plate heat exchanger for 4 s and stored at 15°C, all gelled after 7 months. When UHT time was increased to 16 s, all the 138°C samples gelled after 7 months as did the samples that were preheated for 50 s and UHT-processed at 138°C. The samples preheated at 75°C for 50 sand UHT-processed at 145°C gelled after 8 months, whereas at 90°C preheat temperature the samples gelled after 9 months. The samples stored at 35°C did not gel but showed different sedimentation levels. The sediment depth in the container was always greater for the steam-injected samples. The samples that received higher heat treatments by the two processing methods had a higher sedimentation depth. The pH decreased during storage and the extent of reduction was higher at 35°C storage temperature . Maillard browning occurred at both storage temperatures. Browning was greater in samples stored at 35°C and processed by indirect plate heat exchanger.

Isenhour, Cindy. "BUILDING SUSTAINABLE SOCIETIES: EXPLORING SUSTAINABILITY POLICY AND PRACTICE IN THE AGE OF HIGH CONSUMPTION." UKnowledge, 2010. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/1.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an attempt to examine how humans in wealthy, post-industrial urban contexts understand sustainability and respond to their concerns given their sphere of influence. I focus specifically on sustainable consumption policy and practice in Sweden, where concerns for sustainability and consumer-based responses are strong. This case raises interesting questions about the relative strength of sustainability movements in different cultural and geo-political contexts as well as the specific factors that have motivated the movement toward sustainable living in Sweden. The data presented here supports the need for multigenic theories of sustainable consumerism. Rather than relying on dominant theories of reflexive modernization, there is a need for locally and historically grounded analyses. The Swedish case illustrates that the relative strength of sustainable living is linked not only to high levels of awareness about social, economic and ecological threats to sustainability, but also to a strong and historically rooted emphasis on equality in Sweden. In this context, sustainable living is often driven by concerns for global equity and justice. The research therefore affirms the findings of those like Hobson (2002) and Berglund and Matti (2005) who argue that concerns for social justice often have more resonance with citizen-consumers - driving more progressive lifestyle changes than personal self-interest. Yet despite the power of moral appeals, this research also suggests that the devolution of responsibility for sustainability - to citizens in their roles as consumers on the free market – has failed to produce significant change. While many attribute this failure to “Gidden’s Paradox” or the assumption that people will not change their lifestyles until they see and feel risks personally, the data presented here illustrates that even those most committed to sustainable living confront structural barriers that they do not have the power to overcome. The paradox is not that people can’t understand or act upon threats to sustainability from afar; but rather that it is extremely difficult to live more sustainably without strong social support, market regulation and political leadership. Sustainability policy must work to confront the illusion of choice by breaking down structural barriers, particularly for people who do not have the luxury of choosing alternatives.

Full text
Abstract:
A sample of 25 idiopathic Parkinson's disease subjects and 25 age and education matched elderly healthy control subjects were assessed for their speed of primary memory scanning speed using the Sternberg memory scanning paradigm. In addition, all patients were assessed for cognitive functioning as measured by the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale and the Wechsler Memory Scale. Significant differences were found between Parkinson's disease subjects and control subjects on speed of primary memory scanning, with the parkinsonian subjects performing significantly slower than the control subjects. Increased variability in the measure of memory scanning speed was noted for the parkinsonian subjects as compared to control subjects and different variables associated with increased cognitive disturbances in parkinsonian subjects were investigated as possible sources of this variability. It was found that the majority of variance could be accounted for by the parkinsonian subjects' age of symptom onset. Parkinsonian subjects who developed the disease later in life were significantly slower at primary memory scanning speed than were either parkinsonian subjects who developed the disease earlier in life, or than healthy control subjects. Cognitive variables measuring initiation and perseveration, construction and attention were found to be highly associated with increased primary memory scanning time. The relationship between these cognitive abilities and frontal lobe dysfunction is discussed. Also, the possible relationship between slowing of memory scanning and dopamine depletion is presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Preterm newborns require special care for surviving and may develop severe diseases related to prematurity, especially those born very early. The fetal inflammatory response (FIR) to intraamniotic infection is characterized by high levels of cytokines in umbilical cord (UC) blood and it is diagnosed by the identification of pathological vasculitis of vessels of fetal origin in the umbilical cord and the placenta. The FIR jointly with neonatal diseases with systemic inflammation increase the risk of perinatal brain injury. In this thesis we explore the molecular changes associated with FIR in UC and in dried blood spots, collected during the first postnatal week and archived at the newborn screening program, using technologies for high-throughput molecular profiling. The results of this thesis provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of FIR at birth and postnatally, which can help the identification of biomarkers and therapeutic targets of FIR and FIR-associated disorders

Abstract:
The patterns of recreational engagement and health related quality of life (HRQL) of school-aged children with High Functioning Autism (HFA) are not well understood. The objectives of this study of children with HFA and their typically developing peers were to: compare their recreational profiles; identify child-based factors related to recreational participation; and, estimate their HRQL in relation to recreational engagement. Additionally, the psychometric properties of the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment/ Preference for Activities of Children (CAPE/PAC) for this population were estimated. A cross sectional study of a volunteer sample of children with HFA (n=30) and peers (n=31) recruited through multiple Vermont sources was conducted. Data collection took place during 2-3 home visits. Standardized and psychometrically sound tools were used to independently confirm diagnosis and ascertain children's characteristics. The CAPE/PAC and Pediatric Quality of Life 4.0 were the primary outcome measures. The groups were similar on key characteristics except those related to the HFA attributes. Children with HFA differed from peers in terms of diversity (p=.002), social aspects (p=.006) and locations (p<.001) of recreational participation. The two groups were not statistically different in personal intensity (p=.684), enjoyment (p=.239) or preferences (p=.788) of recreation. Children with HFA had significantly poorer HRQL whether reported by themselves (p<.001) or their parents (p<.001), although disagreement (ICC=-.075) between children and parental scores suggested that they had different viewpoints about children's HRQL. The study results have value for parents, clinicians, teachers and administrators in understanding and supporting the recreational engagement of children with HFA.
Narayanaswamy, Venkatachalam. "The Role of Lactose in the Age Gelation of Ultra-High-Temperature Processed Concentrated Skim Milk." DigitalCommons@USU, 1992. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5383.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to relate lactose reactivity and age gelation of UHT processed concentrated milk. Skim milk was pasteurized, diafiltered batchwise to reduce lactose concentration to less than 0.05%, and UF concentrated to 3X (one-third volume reduction). Lactose and sucrose were then each added at 3% or 6% w/v to part of the concentrate. The five samples, control ( < 0.05% lactose), 3% w/v lactose, 6% w/v lactose, 3% w/v sucrose, and 6% w/v sucrose, were UHT processed at 140°C for 4 s using the indirect heating method. Samples were collected aseptically in presterilized plastic containers and stored at 4°C, 20°C, and 35°C for periodic analysis. All samples stored at 4°C and 20°C gelled after 21 weeks of storage. The viscosity changed slightly during the first 19 weeks of storage but increased suddenly (> 100 cPs) just before gelation. Samples stored at 35°C did not gel but showed sedimentation. Samples stored at 4°C or 20°C underwent little browning; but samples containing 3% and 6% lactose, stored at 35°C, browned considerably. The SOS-PAGE patterns of gelled samples showed new bands because of proteolysis whereas samples stored at 35°C showed bands due to proteolysis and protein crosslinking and a streaking pattern. Electron micrographs of gelled samples showed various casein particles connected together by hairy appendages protruding from the surface of casein particles, to form a continuous three-dimensional network. In non-gelled samples, the micelles were not joined into a continuous network and few hairy appendages protruded from their surfaces. Hairy appendages were not a result of Maillard reaction occurring during storage. Maillard reaction neither provided protection against nor promoted age gelation. Proteolysis was not the only cause for gelation. Protein modifications prevented gelation in samples stored at 35°C. Age gelation was probably a two-step process involving dissociation of proteins from the casein micelles that reformed onto the micelle surface as hairy appendages. Aggregation of the protein particles occurred through these appendages rather than through the original micelle surface.

Oh, Se il. "High Modernity and Multiple Secularities: Various Forms of Religious Non-Affiliation in the United States." Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/1945.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Paul Schervish
The rapid increase in the number of religious non-affiliates in the United States makes non-affiliation an important issue to study. Traditional secularization theories have explained the overall increase in the number of people who report not belonging to a specific religion, but have not explored the diversity among them. Studies attempting to explain the rise in non-affiliation have been basically descriptive, focusing on sociodemographic characteristics or social networks of religious non-affiliates, examining the effects of cohort, political orientation, parents' religions, and peer religions. There is no comprehensive social theory on the dynamics of religious non-affiliation. In sum, the previous literature requires us to reconsider the theoretical limits of modernity and the unilateral understanding of secularization and suggests a new framework for multiple secularities in accordance with high modernity. In this study, I conceptualize religious non-affiliation as "multiple secularities," creating a new framework that takes into account the existence of various forms of non-affiliation in the United States. Specifically, I identify three types of worldviews (theism, spiritualism, immanent frame) and two categories of institutional religious affiliation (affiliation and non-affiliation). Thus, six forms of belief are considered--affiliated theism, affiliated spiritualism, affiliated positivism, unaffiliated theism, unaffiliated spiritualism, and unaffiliated positivism. Utilizing the 2005 Baylor Religion Survey and the Religion Module of the 2008 International Social Science Survey, this dissertation explores differences among multiple secularities in the U.S. with respect to three dimensions of holistic implications: head, heart, and hand. Findings indicate that there are distinct differences among unaffiliated individuals based on belief types. Compared to unaffiliated spiritualists and unaffiliated positivists, unaffiliated theists place less importance on the role of human agency as compared to divine agency, have lower levels of moral liberalism, are more likely to favor religion when considering the tension between religion and science, more likely to report experiences of being filled with the Spirit, more likely to participate in political associations, but less likely to attend political rallies and demonstrations. Unaffiliated spiritualists have the highest rates of reporting experiences of oneness with the universe and interest in New Age (astrology and alternative medicine), and they are most likely to participate in political rallies or public protests among the unaffiliated individuals. Unaffiliated positivists are most likely to place importance on human agency, and they have the lowest rates of religious and spiritual experiences among the unaffiliated. These findings make several important contributions to the literature. First, they contribute to the recognition of the limits of the `secularization' thesis in a high (or late) modern society such as the United States and provide a new framework for understanding `multiple secularities' by examining interactions between the institutional level of secularity (non-affiliation) and the individual level of secularity (privatization of belief). Second, they confirm the Weberian insight that `elective affinities' exist between worldviews and ideological, experiential, and social aspects of life in a high modern society. Third, they demonstrate that social research should further explore the subdivisions among "unchurched believers" (unaffiliated theists and spiritualists). Fourth, they contribute to the debate on "spiritual individualism" versus "engaged spirituality" by demonstrating that spirituality promotes various forms of social engagement. Finally, this dissertation suggests that contemporary social scientists should recognize the limits of the traditional secularization thesis and face a new conundrum of post-secularity beyond belief types and affiliation types in order to promote social cohesion

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to elucidate the demographic characteristics associated with elevated or reduced rates of pneumococcal conjugate 13 (PCV13) vaccination. A retrospective cohort study was performed using the Truven Health MarketScan® Database. Three cohorts were created corresponding to populations for which the CDC recommends PCV13 vaccination. Cohort 1: children < 36 months of age. Cohort 2: adults 19-64 years of age with high infection risk. Cohort 3: adults > 65 years of age. Odds of having a PCV13 claim were calculated for each cohort. For Cohort 1, 78% out of a total of 353,214 subjects had a sufficient number of PCV13 doses to meet CDC recommendations. For Cohort 2, 3.7% out of a total of 673,157 subjects had a PCV13 claim. For Cohort 3, 18% of 1,262,531 subjects had a PCV13 claim. Odds of vaccination were generally lower in younger subjects, those with fewer outpatient claims, and those with residence in the Northeast and South regions. In Cohort 2, odds were reduced in subjects with generalized malignancy. Gender and urban residence were poor predictors of vaccination status. By understanding the demographic factors associated with lower rates of vaccination, clinicians may more effectively direct their efforts to increase pneumococcal vaccination coverage.

Liu, Hsuan-Ying, and Hsuan-Ying Liu. "Coming of Age Learning Mandarin: Chinese L2 Learners' Investment during their Transition from High School to University." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621358.

Full text
Abstract:
Situated in the changing context of Mandarin learning in the United States, Mandarin these days is changing from a less commonly taught language to a more commonly offered foreign language option in American secondary schools. However, in the applied linguistic literature, "few empirical studies have focused on pre-college CFL learning" (Ke, 2012, p.98). Moreover, the transition from high school to university often entails complex social, cultural, and emotional changes (e.g., Nathan, 2006). The goal of this dissertation project, therefore, is to investigate how students' investment in Mandarin is socially and historically constructed at these three levels: personal, familial, and institutional, as they transition from high school to university. This study draws upon the theory of identity and investment (Norton, 1995) to examine how these teenage language learners are multidimensional beings with multiple desires, and how their investment is produced or reproduced from social interactions, and is subject to change. Three high school campuses were chosen, because Mandarin classes are now offered from kindergarten through twelfth grade in these schools. Six students who expressed their intentions to continue learning Mandarin in university consented to participate in this study. Data collection for this study lasted from March to December 2015, which covered these students' last semester of high school, their first semester of college, and the period between. Data were collected from interviews and monthly informal Skype chats, and supplemented with class documents. Using qualitative analysis methods, the findings show the following factors as salient to their investment in Mandarin learning at the high school stage: 1) the students' personal interest, and 2) the influence from their families and their institutions. In the university setting, these students' investment in Mandarin was mostly mediated at the personal and the institutional levels. The results reveal the identity shift from childhood to adulthood these adolescent learners experienced during the transition. Specifically, the adolescent learners became more independent in making their own decisions, and less dependent on their families, both financially and symbolically. Second, the findings also highlight how these individuals' investment in Mandarin could be constrained at the institutional level. This points to the need for L2 educators to pay attention not only to individual students' personal interests and motivations in language learning, but also to a better understanding of how students perceive their own identities and whether foreign language learning is accessible to learners institutionally.

Tinsley, Sara Marie. "A Comparison of Quality of Life between Intense and Non-Intense Treatment for Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and High-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5786.

Full text
Abstract:
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) are hematologic malignancies that occur most frequently in the sixth and seventh decades of life. Both disorders are associated with a poor prognosis, with median survival of one year or less. An overall five-year survival rate for both disorders, regardless of treatment, is less than 10%. A primary goal of treatment is to improve quality of life (QOL) because cure is improbable. The purpose of this longitudinal cohort study was to compare QOL between groups, intensive, non-intensive therapy, and supportive care. The sample consisted of 85 patients with high risk MDS and AML recruited from Moffitt Cancer Center. Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Leukemia (FACT-Leu) was used to measure QOL. The aims for the study were to: 1) To compare the difference in QOL scores measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy –Leukemia version for intensive chemotherapy, non-intensive therapy and supportive care within 7 days of new treatment and one month after initiation of treatment; 2) To determine QOL predictors of AML and high risk MDS from age, comorbidity, fatigue, and diagnosis; 3) To test the moderating effect of treatment with age, comorbidity, and fatigue on QOL. The first aim was analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The supportive care group was not included in the analysis because of low accrual. Results indicated that there was a significant group by time interaction (with p=.040). Follow up tests revealed that the intensive treatment group had a significant improvement in their QOL scores at 1 month post treatment (p=.020). The second aim was conducted using Pearson’s correlations with age, comorbidity, fatigue, and diagnosis with significant correlations found between fatigue and QOL (r=-.693, p< .001). These findings identify an important relationship between fatigue and QOL. This was a negative correlation, showing that as fatigue increases QOL decreases. The third aim was explored using regression with Hayes (2013) application for moderation analysis. Scores for QOL for age, comorbidity, and fatigue were not moderated by treatment. These findings suggest that the most intensive treatment approach improves QOL. In addition, fatigue is a significant predictor of QOL. As fatigue increases, QOL scores decrease. Additional studies with a larger, more diverse sample is needed to explore the relationship between treatment approaches and QOL. In addition, intervention studies can be developed in AML and high risk MDS focused on fatigue management. It is anticipated that the results of this study will be used to inform patients and health care providers when making decisions concerning treatment based on QOL outcomes.

Abstract:
Background. People who have periods of low family income are at risk for increased health problems in the future, even if they present a similar clinical picture before the reduction in family income. The association between low income and health status was studied in residents of an area with relatively low-average family income and with a historically unstable economy. Methods. We surveyed a stratified, clustered sample of residents of Johnson County, Tennessee, using a structured interview. The responses were analyzed in conjunction with national and regional data (National Health Interview Survey). Results. Residents of the geographic area under study had a markedly higher prevalence of self-reported health problems than either the national average or rural areas in the southeast United States. The higher prevalence was accounted for by the combination of age and family income, which had equal effects on health status, but not by age differences alone. Conclusions. Family income and economic development are critically important to improving community health. Sensible capitation rates in managed care arrangements can be obtained only if the income distribution of an insured population is considered along with their age, sex, and physical health status.

Unterman, Matthew Blair. "High resolution simulations of synoptic scale 'paleometeorology' during the last glacial maximum." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7654.

Full text
Abstract:
Hourly winter weather conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are simulated using the Community Climate Model version 3 (CCM3) on a globally resolved T170 (~75 km) grid. This simulation has been run in-tandem with a lower temporally resolved six-year climatological run. The purpose of the study is to determine: (1) whether examination of higher-resolution simulations, on both spatial and temporal scales, can enhance paleometeorological inferences based previously on monthly statistics of model output and (2) whether certain synoptic-scale events, which may have only a modest impact on seasonal statistics, might exert a disproportionate impact on geological climate records. Analysis is focused on changes in wind flow, no analogue climate “states”, synoptic scale events including Northern Hemisphere cyclogenesis, and gust events over glacial dust source regions. Results show a decrease in North Atlantic and increase in North Pacific cyclogenesis during the LGM. Storm trajectories react to the mechanical forcing of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, with Pacific storms tracking over middle Alaska and northern Canada and terminate in the Labrador Sea. The latter result supports observations and other model runs showing a significant reduction in Greenland winter precipitation. The modified Pacific track results in increased precipitation and the delivery of warmer air along the west coast of North America. This could explain “early” glacial warming inferred in this region from proxy climate records, potentially representing instead a natural regional response to ice age boundary conditions. Results also indicate a low variability, “no analogue” region just south of the Laurentide Ice Sheet margin which has appropriate conditions to harbour temperature-sensitive trees west of the Appalachian Mountains. Combined with pollen data, this lends valuable insight into the known disagreement between modern seed dispersal experiments and calculated migration rates. Finally, hourly-scale gust events over dust source regions during the LGM are two to five times greater than the modern, providing a mechanism to help explain the increased glacial dust load seen in the ice cores. Backwards air-parcel trajectories from Antarctic ice core locations show air sources over Patagonia and the Altiplano with some inputs from South Africa agreeing with recent isotopic tracer analyses. Results demonstrate that high temporal and spatial resolution simulations can provide valuable insight to add to the cornucopia of information already available from lower-resolution runs. They can also enhance our interpretation of geological records, which have been previously assumed to record longer time-scale climatological mean-states and thus ignoring any extreme synoptic events which may actually have had a disproportionate impact on their preservation.

Full text
Abstract:
Drusen and Basal linear deposits are hallmark features of early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These extracellular deposits accumulate between the basal lamina of the RPE and the inner collagenous layer of Bruch's membrane. They contain proteins, lipids, trace metals and mineral constituents. While early AMD is not typically accompanied with vision loss, it is likely to initiate the pathological processes leading to blindness in the elderly. Understanding how early stage AMD is initiated could enable the development of novel treatment strategies that might delay/prevent progression to advanced AMD and vision loss. It was hypothesized that mineral deposition in the sub-RPE space directly mediates extracellular deposit formation followed by AMD progression. Using high-resolution molecular imaging modalities including electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry, and synchrotron x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, in addition to electron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies, the mineral constituents involved in biomineralization events leading to deposit formation were investigated. Here, clinically significant information regarding sub-RPE deposit formation is reported. Extracellular deposits were found to contain either magnesium(Mg)-substituted whitlockite spherules (~1.3 µm diameter) or large hydroxyapatite nodules without Mg (up to 100 µm diameter). The latter was identified as a progression biomarker for GA. The absence of detectable Mg in nodules suggests that modification of Mg availability in the sub-RPE space might influence progression to late AMD. Moreover, analysis of a primary RPE culture model demonstrated that RPE cells could form deposits containing all of the major constituents of drusen, including hydroxyapatite. Therefore, this model provides a platform for investigating the underlying mechanisms of sub-RPE deposit formation in addition to testing novel treatment strategies. The work presented in this thesis gives a new perspective on sub-RPE deposit biogenesis and suggests that inorganic chemistry and materials science approaches might be informative for future studies.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to on one hand give a good overview of finds found in gotlandic stonefoundationhouses (kämpgravar) that were commonly built during the Iron Age and on the other hand investigate the possibility of separating some houses from others and trace social stratification and hierarchies based on the finds. The items of special interest for this goal were those that could be connected to wealth such as drinking objects, Roman objects and objects made of silver and gold. This investigation has shown that on Gotland it actually existed some, often enormous, houses that had a special tendency to hoard exotic valuables. The real standout houses on this subject are the one in Stavgard and the recently excavated building in Hellvi. A secondart goal was to investigate the possibility to date the buildings based on the finds, which was found to be very problematic. (Two years master’s thesis in Archaeology)
(Master-uppsats i Arkeologi)

Stimus, Mirela Camelia. "How Presidents Can Become "Hip" by Using High Definition Metaphors Strategic Communication of Leadership in a Digital Age." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6402.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this interdisciplinary research was to see whether American presidents can reach Millennials more effectively in the digital age while publicly advancing the legislative agenda of their administration. The rationale is that presidents need to gain public support to pressure Congress into passing their legislation; while doing that, they can capture the public’s interest in politics and educate civically the most inattentive audience. To accomplish the task, strategic messaging adequate to digital media is necessary. Millennials appear as having modest interest and knowledge of politics despite their intense presence on digital media. On the other hand, they represent a third of the electorate— also projected to become the most important economic contributors in society — thus constituting an audience that cannot be ignored. Because metaphors are credited with an important role in processing new information and in branding leadership, I propose a category of new metaphors, labeled High Definition (HD) Metaphors that have three characteristics: they concentrate the policy contained in the message, are novel, and are relevant to the targeted audience. The most important claim is that HD metaphors catch the eye of the audience by increasing the message visibility; the corresponding hypothesis is (H1) Presidential messages containing High Definition Metaphors are more salient than their literal counterparts. Second, I argue that HD metaphors facilitate the understanding of the message as they have a contribution to the acquisition of new information; hence the second hypothesis: (H2) Presidential messages containing High Definition Metaphors produce more political knowledge. Last, I claim that metaphors can influence the audience, by producing more agreement with the message; this is reflected in the third hypothesis: (H3) Presidential messages containing High Definition Metaphors are more persuasive than their literal counterparts. To test these claims I conducted an experiment with 251 students in a large American university in the southeast, in which two groups were exposed to written, fictitious metaphorical messages sourced by a fictitious president of the U.S. and two groups received the non metaphorical versions of the messages (literal counterparts). One pair of messages was constructed on a topic of high involvement and the other pair on a topic of low involvement, as determined at a previous date. Statistical analysis indicated that HD Metaphors increase the visibility of the message especially for audiences less interested in the topic. This is a key finding because it suggests that presidents can capture the attention of Millennials who are in general apathetic to the political discourse. On the other hand, HD Metaphors did not produce more political knowledge or more persuasion, in this particular design. The importance of this study is theoretical and practical. It advances a new concept, High Definition Metaphors that was empirically tested with the power of an experiment; future work can build on these findings by detecting other effects. This research also connects theoretical models and concepts from various disciplines, thus enriching the scholarly understanding of issues that are not satisfied within the boundaries of a single field. Most importantly, this research has applicability to practice by informing presidential communication in the digital era; additionally, it can enhance the external strategic communication of leadership in non- governmental and international organizations since HD Metaphors can be adapted to fit any audiences whose attention is desired.

Armano, Giulia <1996&gt. "Luxury Jewellery in the Chinese Digital Age. Online strategies for selling high-end jewellery in the Chinese market." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/18202.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of luxury jewellery industry in China and the impact that the recent digital revolution inevitably had on this sector. A particular attention is devoted to the exploration of the possible digital marketing strategies that international well-renowned jewellery brands can apply when they seek to expand in the vast and culturally diversified market of China. Divided into four main chapters, the study begins with a 360-degree overview of the luxury system; analyzing its multidimensional nature from an etymological, commodity, economic, cultural, customer and market’s point of view. After a general and global outlook of the sector, the analysis shifts on the regional characteristics and cultural perceptions of luxury in the Chinese market, the world's leading consumer of luxury goods and the reference of this thesis. The second part is entirely dedicated to China’s gem and jewellery market. After a preliminary investigation on the relationship between jewellery and luxury products, it provides a detailed description of the evolution path, market sizing and segmentation (gold, platinum, diamond, silver and colored gemstones) as well as the current and future growth drivers. The most highly regarded domestic and global jewellery players operating in the Chinese luxury market are also presented. This section ends delving into the profile of the Chinese jewellery consumers and their purchase behaviors. Then, the study goes on investigating how luxury jewellery brands can navigate China's complex digital landscape to reach potential and existing consumers. As result, an exhaustive guide of various digital marketing initiatives that jewellery brands can adopt in order to excel in the Chinese digital domain is provided. The following digital marketing techniques comprise: the creation of a Chinese official website, SEO and SEM techniques on Baidu, jewellery sales on both generalist and vertical e-commerce platforms (Tmall with its Luxury Pavilion subsection, JD.com, Kaola, Secoo and 5lux.com), social media marketing (WeChat, Weibo and a mention to Little Red Book), storytelling, advertising and influencer marketing practises. The last part of the research presents multiple case studies about ad hoc digital marketing campaigns carried out by four international jewellery brands –– Tiffany, Chopard, Cartier and Piaget –– during two of the most important festivities in the Chinese culture: China’s Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day (Qixi Festival). In particular, their online cross-platform marketing activities on WeChat, Weibo and Tmall Luxury Pavilion are analysed in details. The thesis concludes with some final remarks and useful suggestions for successful management in terms of online marketing and commerce of the Chinese high-end jewellery market.

Abstract:
Reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) retentates were ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed and compared for storage life at room temperature. Viscosity studies indicated that UHT-treated, RO retentate delayed age gelation longer than UF retentate at the same total solids level (26% TS). When compared at 6.4% protein level (2x RO vs 2.7x UF where x=ratio of the feed volume to concentrate volume), the storage life for both RO and UF retentates was about 6 to 8 months. Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) and disodium phosphate (DSP) at 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20 mM concentrations were incorporated prior to UHT processing of each sample to improve the shelf life. SHMP at 1 and 3 mM concentrations was effective in delaying age gelation, whereas all levels of DSP accelerated gelation. However, SHMP accelerated age gelation at concentrations of 10 and 20 mM. SHMP at 1 mM in RO retentate was more effective in delaying age gelation than the same SHMP level in two UF samples (22 and 26% TS). Analysis showed that RO/UHT-treated samples had higher soluble calcium and ionic calcium than did UF/UHT-treated samples. The coefficient of determination (R2) was .80 between soluble calcium-to-protein ratio and shelf life.

Abstract:
Financial markets perform two major functions. The first is the provision of liquidity in order to facilitate direct investment, hedging and diversification; the second is to ensure the efficient price discovery required in order to direct resources to where they can be best utilised within an economy. How well financial markets perform these functions is critical to the financial welfare of every individual in modern economies. As an example, retirement savings across the world are mostly invested in capital markets. Hence, the functioning of financial markets is linked to the standard of living of individuals. Technological advancements and new market regulations have in recent times significantly impacted how financial markets function, with no period in history having witnessed a more rapid pace of change than the last decade. Financial markets have become very complex, with most of the order execution now done by computer algorithms. New high-tech trading venues, such as dark pools, also now play outsized roles in financial markets. A lot of the impacts of these developments are poorly understood. In the EU particularly, the introduction of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) and advancements in technology have combined to unleash a dramatic transformation of European capital markets. In order to better understand the role of high-tech trading venues in the modern financial markets' trading environment generally and in the UK in particular, I conduct three studies investigating questions linked to the three major developments in financial markets over the past decade; these are algorithmic/high-frequency trading, market fragmentation and dark trading. In the first study, I examine the changing relationship between the price impact of block trades and informed trading, by considering this phenomenon within a high-frequency trading environment on intraday and inter-day bases. I find that the price impact of block trades is stronger during the first hour of trading; this is consistent with the hypothesis that information accumulates overnight during non-trading hours. Furthermore, private information is gradually incorporated into prices despite heightened trading frequency. Evidence suggests that informed traders exploit superior information across trading days, and stocks with lower transparency exhibit stronger information diffusion effects when traded in blocks, thus informed block trading facilitates price discovery. The second study exploits the regulatory differences between the US and the EU to examine the impact of market fragmentation on dimensions of market quality. Unlike the US's Regulation National Market System, the EU's MiFID does not impose a formal exchange trading linkage or guarantee a best execution price. This has raised concerns about consolidated market quality in increasingly fragmented European markets. The second study therefore investigates the impact of visible trading fragmentation on the quality of the London equity market and find a quadratic relationship between fragmentation and adverse selection costs. At low levels of fragmentation, order flow competition reduces adverse selection costs, improves market transparency and enhances market efficiency by reducing arbitrage opportunities. However, high levels of fragmentation increase adverse selection costs. The final study compares the impact of lit and dark venues' liquidity on market liquidity. I find that compared with lit venues, dark venues proportionally contribute more liquidity to the aggregate market. This is because dark pools facilitate trades that otherwise might not easily have occurred in lit venues when the spread widens and the limit order queue builds up. I also find that informed and algorithmic trading hinder liquidity creation in lit and dark venues, while evidence also suggests that stocks exhibiting low levels of informed trading across the aggregate market drive dark venues' liquidity contribution.

Rothschild, William F. "The relationship of exercise and diet to total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol college age males and females." Scholarly Commons, 1986. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2114.

Abstract:
Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries and is defined as a form of arteriosclerosis in which fatty lesions called atheromatous plaques form on the intima of arteries. The formation of these plaques begins early, within the first two decades of life, and may be started by damage to the endothelial cells and intima of the artery walls (Guyton, 1981). A number of factors may cause the initial damage, including physical abrasion of the endothelium, abnormal substances in the blood or pulsating arterial pressure on the vessel wall (Guyton, 1981). There is a growing body of epidemiologic, genetic, experimental, and clinical evidence to support the hypothesis that there is a cause and effect relationship between high blood levels of cholesterol and the development of atherosclerosis in humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of exercise and diet in predicting the total cholesterol/high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) ratio in college age males and females. Variables controlled for included age, gender, smoking, medication use, contraceptive use, hormone use and intense physical activity.

Olson, Douglas W. "Zeta-Potenetial of Casein Micelles as a Factor in Age Gelation of Ultra-High Temperature Processed Concentrated Skim Milk." DigitalCommons@USU, 1992. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5385.

Full text
Abstract:
The effect of ultra-high temperature processing by direct steam injection and room temperature storage of pH-adjusted and unadjusted 3X (volume reduction) skim milk retentate and the effect of storage at various temperatures of 3X skim milk retentate without pH adjustment on their ζ-potential, viscosity, and pH were determined. Pasteurized skim milk was concentrated to 3X by ultrafiltration. In the pH study portions of skim milk retentate were adjusted to pH 6.38 ± .02 with HCl and 6.85 ± .01 and 7.32 ± .02 with NaOH between ultrafiltration and ultra-high temperature processing. In the storage temperature study, storage temperatures used for pH-unadjusted retentate samples were 11°C, 23°C (room temperature), and 37°C. Although pH 6.38 samples had the lowest viscosity in the pH study before ultra-high temperature processing, these samples precipitated during ultra-high temperature processing. For non-acidified samples, increasing pH of retentate resulted in higher viscosities and quicker age gelation times. Destabilization occurred more rapidly at 37°C than at 23°C or 11°C. The pH drop tended to be greater for samples stored at a higher temperature or adjusted to a higher pH. During 28 weeks of 37°C storage the pH decreased from 6.54 to 6.06. During 32 weeks of 23°C storage pH of samples initially adjusted to pH 7.32 dropped to 7.06. ζ-Potentials of casein micelles were calculated from electrophoretic mobility obtained by measuring Doppler frequency shifts of scattered laser light in samples that had been diluted 300 fold with their own ultra.filtrate. Absolute values of ζ-potential of samples stored at 37°C decreased from -23.4 millivolts immediately after ultra-high temperature processing to -18.5 millivolts after 28 weeks of storage. For samples stored at 11°C and 23°C in the storage temperature study and control samples in the pH study, absolute values of ζ-potential decreased approximately 1.5 to 2.0 millivolts during 28 or 32 weeks of storage.

Abstract:
The present study is an attempt to investigate English learners’ perspective on English Learning Anxiety. Specifically, it pursues to discover whether there are age and gender differences in Language Learning Anxiety within a classroom environment. The data were gathered through questionnaires dispensed to Middle School, High School and University students, both males and females. Considered to be a complex phenomenon and a relevant affective variable, anxiety has been found to be correlated with English-learning achievement. Educational implications of the study include what students and teachers can do in order to diminish the debilitating effects of anxiety.
