Full textWith Sélico, ou les nègres généreux (1793), Pixerécourt, who is considered the first French melodrama playwright, places an original representation of the black character at the heart of a new theatrical genre. From the beginning of the 20th century, with the creation of the first colonial schools, the training of the first black writers and the emergence of Africanism, the melodramatic genre appears as the essential ingredient for the development of an African literature. Melodrama finds new life on another continent, through this persistence of the black melodramatic character in sub-Saharan literatures.The first stage of my research questions this association of a theatrical form and the representation of Africa from a geo-critical point of view. Considered sometimes as Eden-like, sometimes as perilous, the African continent favours the appearance of conflicting situations which fuel melodrama.In the second phase, the status of the melodramatic black character is examined. His perception follows the dichotomy noted about the African environment: it is divided between compassion and rejection.The rich abundance of coloured protagonists in French and African melodramatic literatures makes melodrama a committed theatrical genre. The third step of my reflection focused on the political, social and ethical functions of a melodrama that seeks to take its place in a world in disarray

The media concerned are the mass media: radio, television press. The thesis therefore includes a study of the coloniale period and the transition from colonial publishing to commercial publishing with a subsequent analysis of the speech archetype abourt pauln hazoume for doguicimi, camara laye, ferdinand oyono, cheikh hamidou kane. The second part deals with publishers of the black literature : non-specialized, specialized, expatriate or national editions. The third part deals with the mass media. National and french speaking radio programme including a study of the mediatization of cesaire and senghor by radio france, television and televized literary programmes including a study of the mediatization of maryse conde by "apostrophes" is dealt with. And lastly, a study of @press articles about black wxriters from 1970 to 1992, including ahmadou kourouma, tierno monenembo, sony labou tansi, bolya baenga and patrick chamoiseau. Full textThis research paper has aimed at drawing a comparison between the ways of literary expression in traditionally oral works and the the ones of french speaking black african poetry in three poems quand s'envolent les grues couronnees by pacere titinga, fer de lance by zadi zaourou, and d'eclairs et de foudres by j. M. Adiaffi. My thesis has been divided into four parts. The first one, focused on various definitions of how to set out the subject, has poited out such concepts as tradition and oral literature within the framework of african studies and introduced the traditional as well as the french speaking african poets backgound. The second part has dealt with structure and revealed structural as well as stylistic similarities between both types of works at least in broad outline, the structural similarity being the result of various factors such as a compound circuit of speech, aesthetic and mnemonic requirements. On the topic of beat, the third part has pointed out an instance of rhythmical tone structure in what are traditonally spoken literary works and dealt with the notion of tom-tom beat witthin french speaking blac african poetry. Studying imagery and symbolism in the last chapters has meant working out the structure of metaphor and symbol and showing how different they are from "homothese" on the one hand and on the other interpreting metaphor in french poems according to african cultures. The fourth part has shown in a variety of ways how to integrate traditionally written texts within african poetry

Full textThe criticism is becoming increasingly important a africa as a whole, and interest in the subject is rapidly growing in this country. This book presents views on euvrent issues in criticism of the african literary type; it also presents the application of theory to examples of the novel and the poeticy. Wider horizons are sketched in the general introduction, touching on tradition, modernism and all ideas of the african cultural context. We have examined the writing to african authors themselves and the work of such critics as l. Kesteloot, j. Jhan, j. Chevrier, m. Kane, t. Melone, j. P. Sartre, m. Beti and l. S. Senghor. In parts two and three, the critical approaches are seen from the view points central to humanism thought : the relation of literature to history, the problem of "form" and "content" in literature, the question of literature and polical commitment. Commentaries in our thse essay to explain theory and strategy to the african criticism. This exploration of critical judgments and perceptions throws useful light on the connection between the humanism and structuralism. This book stresses, however, that african criticism cannot be seen simply in academic terms; wich rejects also the illusion of "neutrality" in such a field of literary of criticism

Full textThe emergence of middle-class person as a novel character is one of the most important trend of african literature after the independences. The authors of the corpus draw a common description, which we can recognize in many novels. What they call african middle-class is the group of political men, who often cumulate businessmen's job too. Turning to account the troubles of the struggle for independence, middle-class persons took the power and began to dominate, to bully and to take advantage of common people, drowning it at the same time under an abundant but meaning less speech. In order to put them in the narrative, authors developed around these characters some themes : corruption, absolute power, unique party, neocolonialism. . . Which underline the defects of the middle-class persons. The anti-middle class ideology also appears in the writing. A writing characterized by mixing of style, a broken narrative, violence in tone, expression of the uneasiness of the authors who have to face a new reality they intend to denounce which the same virulence they did towards colonization

The choice of the language remains one of the most essential problems in the literary creation in black africa. In the work, we try to define the corelation of the four following elements : languages, written literature, traditional culture and subject-author. How do the writers transmit and express the african speech in their narrative text? to us, it has appeared necessary and important to reveal the methods and the techniques of the language used in the african novel, so we can seize the problems pertaining to a certain literary aesthetism. Here, the orality interests us but in the perspective of its interference in the writing. How does that orality distinguish itself from the writing as a cultural landmark, a literary and aesthetical manifestation of the non-written language, and what benefits can it constitute and promise to the writing?

Full textCette etude est une analyse thematique et stylistique de cinq romans ecrits par cinq romanciers francophones, a savoir Calixthe Beyala (La Plantation), Assia Djebar (Nulle part dans la maison de mon pere), Fatou Diome (Celles qui attendent), Emmanuel Dongala (Photo de groupe au bord du fleuve) et Rabia Diallo (Amours cruelles, beaute coupable). Les romans a l'etude etudient les faqons dont la vie des femmes africaines est affectee par des facteurs tels que les conflits et les questions financieres. En analysant ces romans cette recherche vise a contribuer dans la banque des donnees a travers les manieres suivantes. Etant donne qu'il existe deja beaucoup d’informations sur les migrants africains en Europe, peu d'informations analysent les conditions de ceux qui restent dans le pays d’origine. A cet egard, cette these vise a fournir une analyse du sort des meres, des epouses et des enfants qui restent dans le pays d'origine en attendant les hommes qui sont partis. Pour mettre en lumiere Emancipation des femmes, cette recherche analyse egalement Evolution de la solidarite de femmes avant et apres l'independance. En ce qui concerne le cadre theorique, les theories pro-feministes et stylistiques forment la base theorique de cette etude. L'analyse de ces ouvrages montre que les questions de genre accentuent l’oppression des femmes africaines. En consequence, cela diminue les circonstances qui favorisent la realisation de soi. La notion de « conscience de l'oppression » de Simone de Beauvoir, et aussi sa pensee selon laquelle « on ne nait pas femme, on le devient » forment la base theorique de cette these. Cette vision etablit l’origine de tous les facteurs qui asservissent les femmes dans la societe. La conscience de l’oppression invite la femme a prendre connaissance de son environnement et de se liberer de toutes les valeurs de la societe qui porte atteinte a ses droits. La problematique se resume ainsi « les subalternes, peuvent-elles parler ? » L'analyse linguistique de cette recherche donne un aperqu de la parole des femmes et pourquoi elles choisissent certains mots. Au-dela de ces preoccupations, on peut conclure que, en imitant l'exemple de ces personnages feminins fictifs, les femmes africaines peuvent s’unir et contribuer a leur v propre emancipation. En ce qui concerne la migration, il sera demontre comment les femmes et les enfants qui restent derriere souffrent aussi bien que les migrants.

Their long-lasting fight for emancipation happens to be about challenging and subverting traditional, patriarchal, and religious institutions. This research that focuses on female main characters analyzes the process of their emancipation as a journey. Through this study, we aim at deconstructing western feminist ideology and its stereotyping of African women. In doing so, we contribute to an understanding of African women identity(ies). Women in West and North Africa, just like westerners, often face misogyny and discrimination. Socio-cultural beliefs, religious, political, and historical standpoints are proven to be factors that contribute to undermining women?s self-fulfillment. Also, they are factors set to create discrepancies between African and Western feminisms as well as between African types of feminisms. Therefore, these factors should be taken into consideration when conceptualizing and analyzing African women. Although this can be true for most African women, authors construe and characterize their female characters as heroines. They discharge themselves of ?masculine domination.? This work first examines the representation of African women social status and interaction in francophone literary and cinematographic works. Next, based on critics like Pierre Bourdieu?s concepts of habitus and symbolic violence, the second chapter analyzes African women?s social behavior in reaction to oppression. Though violence is experienced through habitus, women who escape can free themselves through an undertaken journey. In this way, the third chapter examines women?s use of different strategies to resist oppression. Consequently, women need to overcome various challenges that they encounter. Overall, we ground our research on theories such as post-colonialism, deconstruction, feminisms, negofeminism, and the concept of ?everyday resistance? or cultural resistance. Also, we examine the authors? standpoints and purposes through their representation of heroines. African women are no more where/who they used to be. Nevertheless, because of deep-rooted and obsolete African cultural beliefs, they still have to fight hard for a more advanced emancipation. Unperceived violence can be more damaging for women who face challenges. Key fundamental aspects are the persistence in raising awareness and revisiting African traditions, values, and practices; encouraging women?s political and religious education; and fostering their economic enterprises for financial self-reliance. Most importantly, women?s self-awareness with regard to their ?reproduction of symbolic violence? is the key factor for this battle ground.

Full textThe african and ethiopian mineral world occupies a rather small place within all the references to both countries in naturalis historia by pliny the elder. Yet this place is quite original and it reveals the way pliny was thinking as well as the way he used to work. In fact even if the date of his stay in africa remains imprecise, there is no doubt it is real. Yet, as regards the mineral world, pliny made little use of his own experience. For africa and for ethiopia as well he has transmitted an information coming from previous sources and from an imagery belonging to the time. Among the sources he used, we can discern four main trends. Juba, archelaus. . . Illustrate the tradition of the hellenistic historiography and pliny's great culture. The greek scientific literature representea by theophrastus, has gone through deep transformations in contact with numerous writings by prestigious and apocryphal magi. Sotacus and xenocrates have tried to make a synthesis of the two former trends. By examining the qualities the rocks are credited with and the plan of naturalis historia we can see that the mineral world is integrated into a huge animated system where the exchanges that take place, can explain the efficiency of the stones in medical or magic domains. The worlds is governed by the principle of universal symphathy. The filing system reveals the importance of technology, of colour and the place of the precious stones in the roman society. .

Full textThis study which deals with novelistic creation in tierno monenembo, a french speaking writer places first the novelist in historical, cultural and political contexts in which his work was born. As the other french speaking writers, he renews the practices of african prose pioneers but trying to set himself out of the french novel's perfect example. He explores traditional african literary ressources which he mixes with modern narrative techniques. Our investigations allowed us to underline the esthetical principles of this guinean exiled. Our first part studies the baroque trend of his writing. The second analyses the derision which is brought by a violent, imperfect and frightening world. Our third part shows the impossibility for authors like monenembo to celebrate africa. They mix epic style with satire, sarcasm, and parody. Baroque style, derision and epic tone influence one another. Finally, our text shows that tierno monenembo is a sceptical novelist who keeps hope refusing to nurture utopia and the myths. This novelistic creation is original in african literature

Full textThe study of the thematic modalities of "madness" in african literature (black french-speaking and english-speaking africa and frenchspeaking north africa) shows that writers are not preoccuped in giving a realistic description of the illness from which their characters suffer. What is important to them rather, is to appropriate the phenomena of mental illness and to use it as a symbol, a metaphor for a certain social or political reality. As in "traditional" africa, priority is given here to etiology and the meaning of "madness", to the detriment of symptomatology. Besides, the introduction of the theme of "madness" in litterature does not imply ipso facto the discontruction of narative (or the play), disorder in the narration or an "excessive" rherotic. Apparently, there is no connexion between the between the theme of "madness" and the style in literary fiction. The theme of madnes does not necessarily impose a particular kind of style. The strange occurencies in the form are not sufficient indications of madness. Mental illness can also be expressed in the more reassuring terms of stereotypy and "classicism"

Full textThe west african novel has habitually been critized according to western criteria. This habit leads critics to consider the african novel - which is essentially different from the western novel - as an inapt and inferior work. The central hypothesis of this study is the following : like all lite- rary genres in modern west africa, the novel is strongly influenced by traditional texts from african oral tradition. Certainly the novel is a genre which is new to africa. It comes from the west. But it must be explained that western influence, although real and in some cases major, is not the only source of the west afri- can novel. In order to understand the novel in west africa one must examine its social and historical context and also the influence of oral tradition. The influence of traditional genres on the west african novel is un- deniable. The remarquable presence of traditional narrators, their role and the way they intervene in the novel are interesting links between the novel and the traditional type of narration. On a deeper level, this study affirms that the principal structures of the west african novel are greatly influenced by orality. The no- velist can transform a traditional text into a novel. He can take his inspiration from a structure model that is usually used in traditional genres. The process of the production of the west african novel can be inspired by the performance of traditional story tellers thus pro- ducing a "pretend orality". The relationship between traditional oral literature and the west african novel explains, in our opinion, the singularity of this novel

Full textAn analysis of the collected genres of the verbal folklore belonging to an african black society of oral culture (the dioulas from kong). It is regarded as a general system of speech, in which each type of wording finds its social function in its relation to others. These tradition reports are put forward in a corpus of fourty-five distinct genres (book 2 and 3), translated in french (whit a bilingual sample for each) and issued in a critical edition. Its original feature lies in its composition which complies with the specific native manner of representing tradition wording and in its oral literature being taken from the life - it has been performed in whole sessions that have been publi- shed whenever it might be done. This anthology can be used as reference to the study (book 1) that starts from an individual case and raises general thinking over relation between oral literature and society, thus following three main directions: - criteria for a more relevant definition of oral literature and a more suitable structure of the speech (theory of the genres in the field of oral tradition) - elements for a reflection upon oral expression art (creativity, variability, peculiarity of style, stress on the "session" concept) - propositions for a sociology of wording in oral tradition (ideological func- tion of the system made by the different genres, in the economy of social relations)

Full textThe title of this thesis shows that its theoretical is "psychosystematic enunciation". It deals with the verb and especially the verbal tenses such as "imparfait", "passe simple" and passe compose". The data is taken from an african novel entitled les soleils des independances written by a. Kourouma. The main objects of this work, on the one hand are to show how this theory gives a clear analysis of grammatical and linguistic facts and to contribute to the almost inexistant grammatical study of african literature written in french on the other hand. This research is composed of three parts. The first one (from ch. 1 to 3), which is a sort of theoretical preliminary is in fact a critical synthesis about the various approaches made in the field of the verbal tenses in french nowadays. I also make an account of the way linguistic tense is represented in relation to the verb in french. The second part (from ch. 4 to 6) which is a practical on deals with the expressve theory of language. In it we tried to explain according to the psychosystematic views, the various uses of verbal tenses through our data. The third and last part deals with the theoretical repercussions (ch. 7)

Full textYoung people are privileged characters in black african novels : they are dynamic elements and central figures in a great number of narratives. After trying to define their interest from the viewpoint of the novelists. My study investigates the whole range of qualities they are endowed with in order to meet the readers' expectations and specifically fit the essential parts of accusing heralds and messianic heroes they are often made to play. Examining the opinions and the behavior of various types of young people in relation to the situations and problems dealt with in novels shows that the young, and especially the progressists, represent the conscience and the hopes of the people on whose behalf and for whom they speak and act. Through their words, their actions and the predominant viewpoint they are constantly made to voice, they definitely appear as the announcers or the vectors of the novelist's ideological vision

Full textThe aim of this study is to analyze the contribution of African languages in Brazilian Portuguese by analyzing the lexical Africanisms found in a modern literary work. The book that is being analyzed is The War of the Saints by Jorge Amado (1988). The words of African origin are identified and then these words and expressions are searched for in two editions of the Aurélio, a common Brazilian dictionary. One of the issues of this dictionary is from 1986, i.e. two years before the publication of the book in question, while the other is from 2008. The results show that the dictionaries cite the works of Jorge Amado to illustrate the use of some of the words and, in general terms, the most recent edition includes a few words more than the oldest, but it incorporates more specific information about the lexicon of African origin with respect to its origin, scope of use and semantic domains.
Syftet med följande uppsats är att analysera ord med ursprung i afrikanska språk vilka går att återfinna i portugisiskan som talas i Brasilien, utifrån en analys av orden av afrikanskt ursprung återfunna i ett modernt litterärt verk. Det litterära verk som kommer att analyseras är O sumiço da Santa av Jorge Amado (1988). Orden med ursprung i afrikanska språk identifieras i verket, för att därefter sökas efter i två upplagor av den brasilianska ordboken Aurélio. Den ena upplagan är från 1986, det vill säga två år innan den vidare analyserade boken publicerades, och den andra upplagan är från 2008. Resultaten påvisar att ordböckerna citerar Jorge Amados litterära verk i beskrivingen av somliga ord med ursprung i afrikanska språk. Generellt påvisar resultaten även att den nyare upplagan av ordboken innehåller några fler ord med ursprung i afrikanska språk jämfört med den äldre upplagan, samt att den nyare upplagan redovisar tydligare information gällande lexikonet som härstammar från afrikanska språk gällande ordets ursprung, betydelse samt inom vilket användningsområde eller kontext ordet används.

Full textThe goal of this thesis is the study of way tow African novelists describe the body ; Ahlam Mosteghanemi from Algéria and Calixthe Beyala from Cameroon. Our analisis traces the writings about the body to a symbolic structure where social discourses meet literary practices. The writings about the body, male or female, are studied from a perspective locked in the problematics of social and literary practices. More than a simple description, the body becomes an esthetic disguise through which the two novelists bypass censorship to tackle all their cultural taboos. Thus the sphere of the body combines discourses of subversion and reversal as well as negotiation and self censorship. What’s more, the body subject of literature bears in itself a tearing, a division and a suffering and seems to only understand and live its existence in pain and difficulty. This literal body that feels and suffers expresses a relationship to the world and to others and is part of a quest for self-affirmation

Full textThe sociolinguistic studies show that during the inter-linguistic contact between the Brazilian Portuguese and the African languages during the colonial period, many words were assimilated in the vernacular Portuguese of Brazil. Some of the words are today a part of the vernacular language, while others are used exclusively in Afro-Brazilian religious communities. For the diffusion of the words with African origins, the popular music could be an important factor. With this musical theme, the Brazilian society is reminded of the importance that Africa had in the forming of the Brazilian society, and the music brings awareness of the African words and the Afro-Brazilian cultural elements. There is a frequent use of these African words in the musical accomplishments of the Brazilian composer, musician and artist Gilberto Gil. In the present work these words are analyzed, and with the proposal for classification made by the Brazilian ethno-linguist Yeda Pessoa de Castro, the aim is to classify the words, depending on their sociolinguistic level. The analysis shows that the African words can be found in a great part of the composers work, and the majority comes from the banto and kwa languages. The words are being classified in various semantic fields, for an example food, music and culture, and the majorities are designations that come from Afro-Brazilian religion. The Afro-Brazilian religious theme is a common element in the Brazilian popular music, but in the song lyrics of Gilberto Gil the African theme is also showing in the use of well-known African word. Whereas others words with African origin are not that well known, but in the conscious use of Gilberto Gil words of African origin reinforce a connection to the Afro-Brazilian universe.
Pesquisas sociolinguísticas mostram que no contato linguístico entre o português brasileiro e as línguas africanas durante o tempo da colonização, muitas palavras africanas foram assimiladas à língua falada no Brasil. Certas palavras fazem hoje parte da língua cotidiana, enquanto outras são utilizadas exclusivamente nas comunidades de religião afro-brasileira. Para a difusão das palavras de matriz africana, as músicas populares podem ser um fator importante. Com a ajuda da música, a sociedade brasileira lembra-se da importância que teve a África na formação da sociedade brasileira, e leva para o conhecimento palavras africanas e elementos culturais afro-brasileiros. Na obra musical do compositor, músico e artista Gilberto Gil pode-se observar um uso frequente de palavras de matriz africana. Neste trabalho analisa-se este vocabulário, e com uma proposta de classificação feita pela etnolinguista Yeda Pessoa de Castro, procura-se classificar as palavras conforme o nível sociocultural no qual se encontram. A análise mostra que em grande parte da obra do compositor acham-se palavras africanas, a maioria de origem banto e kwa. As palavras vêm de campos semânticos diferentes como culinária, música, cultura e a maioria são designações derivadas de religiões afro-brasileiras. Justamente o tema da religião afro-brasileiro aparece como elemento comum na música popular brasileira, mas nas letras de Gilberto Gil é possível ver temas do universo afro-brasileiro também através do uso de palavras africanas. A análise mostra que algumas são bem conhecidas, outras nem tanto. O uso tão elaborado do léxico de origem africana por Gilberto Gil em suas letras de canções manifesta uma identificação com o universo afro no Brasil.

Full textIn this text I’m describing my study on how four different Grade R preschool educators in South Africa work with the children’s language development. What methods and artifacts they use, and why. During our education to become preschool teachers we have learned the importance of the educational environment, which should stimulate the children to explore and learn (Skolverket, 2016). This text will highlight the importance of using the environment from a teacher perspective, as it is their experiences and methods I want to find out. The language development of children is important for further education and nowadays the preschools are becoming more multilingual, giving us educators a certain responsibility to ensure that each individual evolve in both their mother tongue and the second language. I chose to use both semi structured interviews and observations as my method of collecting data. My study is both analyzed and presented from a sociocultural perspective on learning, where using the environment and artifacts is an important part. The result will show that the preschool educators consider the environment very important, because it facilitates linguistic learning both in planned activities and in free play, but also to not only rely on a well-planned learning environment alone.

Full textSyftet med denna upsats är att genomföra en karaktärsanalys på karaktären Eugene Achike i Chimamanda Ngozi Adichis roman Purple Hibiscus, för att se ifall karaktären används av Adichie som en skildring av koloniala Nigeria och dess värderingar. Jag har gjort detta genom att undersöka två teman – våld och hyckleri – i samband med Eugenes användning av språk, religös attityd, och beteende mot andra, för att då jämföra dessa aspekter av hans personlighet med attityderna kolonisatörer hade i koloniala Nigeria. De viktigaste sakerna som bevisar att Eugenes karaktär är en skildring av koloniala Nigeria är: hans fullständiga ignoreing av sin bakgrund, inklusive den fysiska ignorering av hans pappa; hans absoluta kontroll över sin familj, både fysiskt och mentalt, vilket leder till våldsamma utbrott om han inte blir åtlydd; det faktum att han beskrivs som en produkt av missionärerna och koloniala samhället vid flera tillfällen i boken. Detta tillsammans med romanens subtila kopplingar till Achebes Things Fall Apart, placerar tveklöst Purple Hibiscus i den postkoloniala kategorin. Därmed drar jag slutsatsen att Eugene’s karaktär är en skildring av koloniala Nigeria.

Cette thèse porte sur l’analyse des tenants et des aboutissants de deux longs-métrages de fiction inspirés par l’œuvre de l’écrivain Tahar Ben Jelloun, à savoir La Nuit sacrée (1993) du Français Nicolas Klotz et La Prière de l’absent (1994) du Marocain Hamid Bénani.
Compte tenu du fait que le 7e Art s’est intéressé depuis toujours à tous les genres littéraires, l’auteur s’est attaché à explorer la dynamique intrinsèque des romans et des films qui font l’objet de ce travail, tout en mettant en relief les rapports que le cinéma entretient avec les représentations socioculturelles issues de ce croisement. Plutôt que se s’enfermer dans une seule démarche méthodologique, le choix a été opéré de s’ouvrir à plusieurs types d’investigation, de façon à mieux prendre en considération les spécificités des œuvres abordées.
Le premier volume de la thèse s’ouvre sur un survol de l’histoire de la littérature maghrébine d’expression française, en général, et marocaine, en particulier, et retrace son évolution, de même que les obstacles qu’il lui a fallu surmonter pour tenter de s’imposer, et qu’elle doit du reste encore surmonter de nos jours.
Après quoi, il est procédé à la définition des différents paramètres des trois romans de Tahard Ben Jelloun, à travers les fonctions et fonctionnements des composantes paratextuelles que sont les titres, les incipits et les clausules des corpus en question. Il s’agit, à ce stade, de démontrer qu’il existe une forte motivation entre ces éléments – souvent considérés comme marginaux – et le texte proprement dit.
Le travail se penche ensuite sur l’étude de chaque roman séparément, selon une approche correspondant à la nature particulière qui s’en dégage.
Après un panorama historique de la cinématographie marocaine et une brève présentation du parcours respectif des cinéastes Nicolas Klotz et Hamid Bénani, le deuxième volume se concentre, pour sa part, sur l’approche des films annoncés dans le cadre de cette étude.
L’analyse du travail d’adaptation débute par la distinction qui s’impose entre la littérature et le cinéma, aussi bien du point de vue productif que réceptif, via la mise en lumière des caractéristiques propres à ces moyens d’expression artistique. S’il apparaît légitime de confronter le cinéma et la littérature, il faut éviter de s’enfermer dans un comparatisme valorisant l’un au détriment de l’autre, sans jamais perdre de vue tout ce qui différencie ces deux formes d’écriture et les publics auxquels elles s’adressent.
Le moteur principal du travail étant l’étude du processus d’adaptation cinématographique, l’auteur s’engage par ailleurs à mettre en perspective les expériences adaptatives retenues dans ces pages, afin de les saisir sous plusieurs angles et divers niveaux de sens imbriqués, mêlant fait culturel et activité artistique.
Toute adaptation n’étant jamais que l’une des nombreuses interprétations possibles du texte originel, l’essentiel est ici d’observer, au-delà des convergences et des divergences existant entre le film et le roman, quels sont les enjeux et les objectifs de La Nuit sacrée de Klotz et de La Prière de l’absent de Bénani. À cet effet, l’accent est mis sur le concept de transfert historico-culturel cher à Michel Serceau, où le contexte sociohistorique et les conditions de fabrication jouent un rôle déterminant pour l’appropriation de l’œuvre littéraire.
Ainsi, parallèlement à l’élucidation des techniques de fabrication des films, une grande importance est accordée aux contextes historique, culturel et artistique dans lesquels ils ont vu le jour, afin de mettre en lumière la singularité du regard que chacun des réalisateurs porte sur la production du romancier. La thèse montre par là comment ces adaptations, qui émanent d’approches et de transferts bien distincts, au niveau du contexte comme des codes culturels, ont donné lieu à deux films aux différences très marquées, tant sur le plan thématique que qualitatif.
Outre la bibliographie, la filmographie et un index des noms figurant à la fin du manuscrit principal, les annexes qui composent le troisième volume offrent un fac-simile des scénarios originaux de La Nuit sacrée et de La Prière de l’absent, suivi du découpage séquentiel des deux films et de la transcription d’entretiens inédits avec les réalisateurs Nicolas Klotz et Hamid Bénani, ainsi qu’une sélection d’articles de presse.

Full textPostcolonial Studies shifted the interest from Western discourses to issues of ideology, power inequality, and ethics. As a consequence of the cultural turn in translation studies in the 1980s, scholars started questioning translation strategies that either assimilate (domestication) or stereotype (exoticization) the source culture. Proposing a semantic, source-text oriented translation principle, Newmark (1981) argues that as long as an equivalent effect can be achieved, literal translation is not just the preferred, but the only acceptable procedure. This paper comments on my own translation of the first 17 chapters of the novel Welcome to Lagos, written by Nigerian writer Chibundu Onuzo. The source text was translated using a semantic translation strategy. The commentary focuses on three key aspects that demanded particular attention during the translation process, due to the fact that they present significant challenges to semantic transfer methods: culture-specific items, stylistic devices, and spoken language markers. As the commentary suggests, the semantic translation strategy worked well on the global text level; occasionally, however, specific translation problems had to be dealt with using a more communicative approach in order to produce an idiomatic target text with an equivalent effect in the target culture.
