Saral, Melek. Turkey's 'Self' and 'Other' Definitions in the Course of the EU Accession Process. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462981171.

Full text
Abstract:
While Turkey in recent years has experienced an exhaustive accession process to join the EU -a long desired aim-, at the same time it has been increasing its involvement across the Middle East, leading to a debate over whether it is altering its focus from West to East. This book reveals that a shift in focus can be seen through analysis of the Turkish political elites' definitions of "self" and "other" that were established as part of the EU accession process. Melek Saral uses these definitions to help us better understand the shift that Turkey is currently undergoing.

Rantala, Jussi, ed. Gender, Memory, and Identity in the Roman World. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462988057.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume approaches three key concepts in Roman history — gender, memory and identity — and demonstrates the significance of their interaction in all social levels and during all periods of Imperial Rome. When societies, as well as individuals, form their identities, remembrance and references to the past play a significant role. The aim of Gender, Memory, and Identity in the Roman World is to cast light on the constructing and the maintaining of both public and private identities in the Roman Empire through memory, and to highlight, in particular, the role of gender in that process. While approaching this subject, the contributors to this volume scrutinise both the literature and material sources, pointing out how widespread the close relationship between gender, memory and identity was. A major aim of Gender, Memory, and Identity in the Roman World as a whole is to point out the significance of the interaction between these three concepts in both the upper and lower levels of Roman society, and how it remained an important question through the period from Augustus right into Late Antiquity.

Ranđelović, Kristina. SOCIJALNA ANKSIOZNOST – TEORIJE I MERE. Filozofski fakultet Niš, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46630/atm.2021.

Full text
Abstract:

Laver, Michael, and Ernest Sergenti. A Baseline ABM of Party Competition. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691139036.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter specifies the “baseline” agent-based model of dynamic multiparty competition, which derives from an article published by (Laver 2005). This assumes that each voter has in mind some personal ideal “package” of policy positions and supports the political party that offers the policy package closest to this. The dynamic system at the heart of the model is as follows: voters support their “closest” party in this sense; party leaders adapt the policy packages they offer in light of the revealed pattern of voter support; voters reconsider which party they support in light of the revealed pattern of party policy packages; and this process continues forever. This recursive model describes policy-based party competition as a complex system, and the baseline model specifies three decision rules that party leaders may deploy when they choose party policy positions in such a setting. These rules are Sticker (always keep the same position), Aggregator (move policy to the centroid of the ideal policy positions of your current supporters), and Hunter (if your last policy move increased your support, make another move in the same direction; or else change heading and move in a different direction).

Abraham, William J. The Dissolution of Divine Action and Agency in Process Theology. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786504.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent philosophical work on divine action has been undertaken carefully and in a sustained manner by Process theologians. Thus the central aim of this chapter is to articulate and evaluate the salient options on offer with respect to divine action and agency in the Process tradition. Though Chapter 3 dealt with the work of Schubert Ogden, a key player in the Process tradition, Ogden did not draw upon the foundations of the Process tradition in his account of divine action. The author engages the work of David R. Griffin, who has provided one of the more thorough accounts of divine action in the Process tradition. He examines how Griffin handles the issue of divine action, and argues that the Process tradition faces formidable difficulties conceptually and theologically in that matter.

Full text
Abstract:
The main issue of the research in this work is involvement of social actors in the housing policy process. The literature review leads the author to conclude that in housing studies there exists a conceptual gap concerning knowledge about the role of social actors in the housing policy process. The gap is particularly apparent when one attempts to examine the housing policy process in the light of the concept of deliberative democracy. Furthermore, there are no research tools in housing studies that would make it possible to grasp the involvement of social actors in the housing policy process. The research problem in this work is formulating a research scheme which would enable to examine the involvement of social actors in the housing policy process and enrich housing studies with possibility to benefit more from the constructivist approach. The theoretical and methodological aim of this dissertation is to obtain a broader and deeper insight into the role of social actors in the housing policy process by expanding the author’s ‘D-Housing’ scheme.

Driver, Julia. The “Consequentialism” in “Epistemic Consequentialism”. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779681.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Driver compares ethical and epistemic consequentialism in order to get clearer on the latter’s view on the relationship between the epistemic right and the epistemic good. She notes that the process reliabilist is a kind of epistemic consequentialist that is able to avoid a number of objections to consequentialism adapted from the ethical literature. It does this by evaluating beliefs indirectly with reference to processes, and then processes directly with reference to the beliefs they tend to produce. But she worries that such a picture may be unmotivated: why think that beliefs are to be evaluated in one way, while processes are to be evaluated in another? One answer lies in a sophisticated form of consequentialism on which the good of true belief is taken to be a regulative aim, and where that notion of goodness is separate from issues concerning epistemic blame.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this article is to review the personality approach on the basis of the theoretical framework, which assumes that the effects of a person's traits on his or her entrepreneurial behavior are mediated by specific traits and motivations, and moderated by environmental conditions. The article relies to a considerable extent on meta-analytical evidence. It argues that although the personality approach to entrepreneurship may help in explaining entrepreneurial behavior, it should be supplemented by sound and theoretically justified developments of modern personality psychology. The article also argues that it is essential to include a process view: Prime candidates for mediating processes are characteristics which are more proximal to the actions and the behavior of entrepreneurs. Although an individual's personality consists of stable trait components as well as of less stable ones, a personality approach also needs to consider the process dynamics of personality constructs.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 8 proceeds from the image of a sovereign state as a flat, two-dimensional surface and re-envisions the process of collective self-government as unfolding three-dimensionally, as a dynamic configuration of tendential responsiveness within the spacetime of a purposive constitutional order—a constitutional isomorph. In allowing us to move beyond constitutional self-government its aim is to dignify the plurality of constituent imaginations, deflate the claims of ethical and practical superiority of the liberal-democratic vision of popular self-government, render the idea of a forward-looking, and concretely purposeful constitutional order more sensible, and challenge the alleged inescapability of imagining the subject of constitutional self-government narratively.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores Jonathan Swift's role in the evolution of a form of novel that did not yet exist in his own day. It is a form priding itself on immediacy of reporting, a rhetoric of intensive confessional exploration, and a sense that the process of writing itself is part of the self-disclosure. Swift's A Tale of a Tub (1704), while not properly a novel, had a shaping influence on the history of fiction, as well as being the product or by-product of a popular culture, and book-trade practices, which provided a foundation for the evolution of the novel. Swift's speaker, dedicating his book to Prince Posterity, boasts ‘that what I am going to say is literally true this Minute I am writing’. He adds in his Preface that his aim is to achieve ‘a Parity and strict Correspondence of Idea's between the Reader and the Author’.

Abstract:
Up until recently, the role of the customer in economic geography seems to have been confined to a passive recipient of products at the end of the value chain. Innovation, in particular, has been conceived as an affair within and between firms. More recently, however, this traditional perception has been challenged. Consumers, in fact, are no longer seen as mere buyers of commodities but are more and more perceived (and perceive themselves) as competent users who contribute valuable knowledge to innovation processes and who have the power and capacity to intervene at all stages in the value creation process. Value co-creation has emerged as a new paradigm that signifies this transformation of the role of consumers. The prime aim of this chapter is to map out the evolving terrain of value co-creation and to draw conclusions for economic geographical inquiry into innovation processes.

Maud, Gonne, Merrigan Klaartje, Meylaerts Reine, and van Gerwen Heleen, eds. Transfer Thinking in Translation Studies. Leuven University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.11116/9789461663726.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of transfer covers the most diverse phenomena of circulation, transformation and reinterpretation of cultural goods across space and time, and are among the driving forces in opening up the field of translation studies. Transfer processes cross linguistic and cultural boundaries and cannot be reduced to simple movements from a source to a target (culture or text). In a time of paradigm shifts, this book aims to explore the potential and interdisciplinary power of transfer as a concept and an analytical tool to account for complex cultural dynamics. The contributions in this book adopt various research angles (literary studies, imagology, translation studies, translator studies, periodical studies, postcolonialism) to study an array of entangled transfer processes that apply to different objects and aspects, ranging from literary texts, legal texts, news, images and identities to ideologies, power asymmetries, titles and heterolingualisms. By embracing a process-oriented way of thinking, all these contributions aim to open the ‘black box’ of transfer in the widest sense.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores some implications for education policy of the research laid out in this book. First, it reviews the empirical results on how context, the quality of hierarchical and horizontal governance, and educational outcomes interact. Both the interests of stakeholders and the ideas which they hold vis-à-vis the system’s functioning shape influence whether low-level equilibrium traps take hold, and how they can be overcome. Second, it lays out a two-part policy approach—practical initiatives for incrementally improving hierarchical and horizontal governance, plus a broader reframing of the ideas surrounding how education and other public services should be provided. The overall aim is to initiate a process which proceeds deliberately, and incrementally, while cumulatively building momentum for re-orienting the system as a whole towards learning.

The monitoring concepts of German federal states aim to protect the public from sex offenders and violent offenders at risk of recidivism, which is intended to be achieved through good cooperation and exchange of information between the agencies involved. This study evaluates these structures and the procedures within the concepts in 10 German federal states. Since those concepts are designed to minimise the risk of recidivism as a preventive measure, a process evaluation offers a good opportunity to examine the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes carried out. In a subsequent comparison, the study identifies weaknesses and mistakes in the concepts in order to submit proposals for their optimisation and initiate further research studies. Abstract:
This chapter provides a review and synthesis of the neurocircuitry involved in affect and cognition and their interactions as it relates to regulatory functions. Cognition and emotion are considered together taking a more integrated, functional perspective. The chapter first gives an overview regarding structure and function of key brain regions, that is, prefrontal and cingulate regions, insula, and subcortical regions, as well as other temporal-parietal-occipital regions. Following this overview, the chapter proceeds with summarizing key neuroscientific findings as organized by cognitive processes and their relevance for emotion. The choice of processes reflects the key stages involved in responding to a stimulus, from the time of sensory input to behavioral response/output, namely perception, learning and memory central executive functions, cognitive appraisal, and reappraisal. The overall aim of the chapter is to provide a better understanding of cognitive-emotional interactions at the neurocircuit level.

Abstract:
Chapter 29 concerns objective and subjective elements of interpretation. A deep difference between classical and modern contract law is that the standards of classical contract law were almost entirely objective, whereas the standards of modern contract law include subjective elements. This difference is particularly striking in the area of interpretation. Classical contract law adopted a standard of interpretation that was almost purely objective. However just as the aim of contract law should be to effectuate the objectives of contracting parties, subject to applicable conditions and constraints, so the aim of interpretation should be to ascertain those objectives, subject to those conditions and constraints, and subjective understandings often play a crucial role in this ascertainment process.

Abstract:
The theme of this book “Digital Innovation, Transformation and Disruption of Higher Education" was chosen due to its relevance in the global digitalized world. Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements. This reimagining of business in the digital age is digital transformation. Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, fundamentally changing how you operate and deliver value to customers. It's also a cultural change that requires organizations to continually challenge the status quo, experiment, and get comfortable with failure. Technology has the potential to revolutionize the traditional teaching and learning process. It can eliminate the barriers to education imposed by space and time and dramatically expand access to lifelong learning. Students no longer have to meet in the same place at the same time to learn together from an instructor. Abstract:
Giving a talk' is one of the most important ways in which we communicate our research. The 'talk' covers everything from a ten-minute briefing on progress to a handful of colleagues, to a keynote address to a major international conference with more than a thousand delegates. Whatever the occasion, the aim is the same - to get the message across clearly and effectively. At the same time, presentational skills are becoming more important in all walks of life - and presenting science has particular issues. Our aim is to equip the reader with the basic skills needed to make a good presentation, and our approach is pragmatic, not dogmatic. We emphasise four points: - The goal is to communicate the science to the audience. - The speaker is responsible for everything that appears, and does not appear, on each slide. - The structure and appearance of the presentation are part of the communication process. - There is no standard way of doing things. Giving a good talk on science is a skill that can be learnt like any other: in this book we take the reader through the process of presenting science to a wide variety of audiences.

Abstract:
The Colombian Special Jurisdiction for Peace (Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz, JEP) is the judicial centrepiece of the country’s national Transitional Justice system. At the same time, the JEP is also at the centre of public controversies surrounding the Colombian peace process and is facing a series of legal and political challenges in its daily work. In this sense, the JEP generates a continuous need for consultation, discussion and research. The articles in this volume aim to contribute to a better understanding of the JEP and to identify further necessary research avenues on this topic. At the same time, we hope to contribute to the still limited research on the Colombian peace process and the JEP in the English language.

Abstract:
In recent years, the field of social simulation has been dominated by the individual, or agent-based, computational model (ABM). ABMs provide unique means to explore complex social systems by allowing researchers to construct explicit models of the individual actors and interactions that make them up - people, peer groups, companies, nations, trade, reproduction, victimization, and so on, This chapter aims to provide the reader with a primer in the social simulation method and in particular the application of ABM in the field of environmental criminology. It begins by discussing the rationale behind the ABM approach. Subsequently, drawing on two illustrative simulations, it summarizes fundamental processes involved in designing, constructing, verifying, calibrating, validating, and utilizing ABM. It concludes by discussing some of the overarching strengths and limitations of the approach, and by discussing several areas of research that might aid in furthering the use of ABM within the field of environmental criminology.
