Abstract:
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury has been a major cause of missed game time among Australian Football League (AFL) players. Return to play after ACL reconstruction is not always achieved, even among elite athletes. The rate of subsequent ACL injury in the AFL from 1990 to 2000 was high as compared with that of other elite sports. Purpose: To determine the rates of return to play and subsequent ACL injury after ACL reconstruction among AFL players from 1999 to 2013 and to explore factors associated with differing rates of return to play and subsequent ACL injury. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A total of 158 AFL players who underwent ACL reconstruction were identified from a prospectively maintained registry of AFL player injuries. Further data were gathered from official playing statistics, surgical records, and structured phone interviews. Results: The rate of return to play after an initial ACL injury was 77% (121 of 158 players). Greater preinjury playing experience and earlier selection in the AFL draft were associated with higher rates of return to play. The rate of subsequent ACL injury to either knee was 30% (48 of 158 players) and was especially high among players aged <21 years (23 of 46 players, 50%). After subsequent ACL injury, 34 of 48 players (71%) returned to play. In primary ACL reconstruction, the use of Ligament Augmentation and Reconstruction System grafts resulted in a faster return to play ( P = .001) but had a higher risk of subsequent revision reconstruction (risk ratio = 2.8, P = .048). Family history of ACL injury was associated with an increased risk of subsequent contralateral ACL injury (risk ratio = 3.8, P = .002). Conclusion: Most AFL players who underwent ACL reconstruction returned to play at least 1 AFL match. The high rate of subsequent ACL injury among AFL players demonstrates the highly demanding nature of Australian football, particularly at the elite level. The risk factors for subsequent ACL injury should be considered carefully when treatment and rehabilitation decisions are made for these high-demand athletes.

Abstract:
Background: Achieving preinjury levels of athletic performance has been challenging for elite athletes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Although a recent study found that 77% of Australian Football League (AFL) players who underwent ACL reconstruction from 1999 to 2013 returned to play at the highest level, the study did not indicate how consistently or well they were able to play. Purpose: To identify the number of AFL players who returned to play consistently over 2 seasons after ACL reconstruction, compare their playing performance in these seasons with preinjury performance, and evaluate factors associated with returning to preinjury levels of performance. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: Analysis included 104 AFL players who underwent ACL reconstruction between 1999 and 2013. All had played at least 10 AFL matches in 1 season before ACL injury. Ranking points, as devised by AFL statisticians, were used to measure individual playing performance. Results: Of the 104 players who played at least 10 matches in 1 season before ACL injury, 53 (51%) returned to play at least 10 matches in 2 seasons after surgery. Of these 53 players, 36 (68%) returned to their preinjury levels of performance. The 17 remaining players who did not return to their preinjury performance still performed comparably to the AFL average level after surgery. Players <25 years old (odds ratio = 2.9, P = .01) or <90 kg (odds ratio = 2.7, P = .03) had greater odds of returning to their preinjury levels of performance. Conclusion: Returning to play on a consistent basis was a substantial challenge for AFL players after ACL reconstruction. However, among players who did return to play consistently over 2 seasons, their postsurgery average performance was comparable with the AFL average level of performance, and two-thirds returned to their preinjury levels of performance. Younger and lighter players were more likely to return to their preinjury levels of performance, possibly given the nature of AFL club playing list management decisions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
TheAspergillus fumigatuslectin AFL was recently described as a new member of the AAL lectin family. As a lectin from an opportunistic pathogen, it might play an important role in the interaction of the pathogen with the human host. A detailed study of structures of AFL complexed with several monosaccharides and oligosaccharides, including blood-group epitopes, was combined with affinity data from SPR and discussed in the context of previous findings. Its six binding sites are non-equivalent, and owing to minor differences in amino-acid composition they exhibit a marked difference in specific ligand recognition. AFL displays a high affinity in the micromolar range towards oligosaccharides which were detected in plants and also those bound on the human epithelia. All of these results indicate AFL to be a complex member of the lectin family and a challenging target for future medical research and, owing to its binding properties, a potentially useful tool in specific biotechnological applications.

Abstract:
Aims: Atrial flutter (AFL) is a common late-onset complication after heart transplantation (HTX) and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. Methods: This study investigated the frequency, risk factors, and outcomes of late-onset post-transplant AFL. We analyzed 639 adult patients undergoing HTX at the Heidelberg Heart Center between 1989 and 2019. Patients were stratified by diagnosis and type of late-onset post-transplant AFL (>90 days after HTX). Results: A total of 55 patients (8.6%) were diagnosed with late-onset post-transplant AFL, 30 had typical AFL (54.5%) and 25 had atypical AFL (45.5%). Patients with AFL were younger at HTX (p = 0.028), received more biatrial anastomosis (p = 0.001), and presented with moderate or severe tricuspid regurgitation (56.4%). Typical AFL was associated with graft rejection (p = 0.016), whereas atypical AFL was associated with coronary artery disease (p = 0.028) and stent implantation (p = 0.042). Patients with atypical AFL showed a higher all-cause 1-year mortality (p = 0.010) along with a higher rate of graft failure after diagnosis of AFL (p = 0.023). Recurrence of AFL was high (83.6%). Patients with catheter ablation after AFL recurrence had a higher 1-year freedom from AFL (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Patients with late-onset post-transplant AFL were younger at HTX, received more biatrial anastomosis, and showed a higher rate of moderate or severe tricuspid regurgitation. Typical AFL was associated with graft rejection, whereas atypical AFL was associated with myocardial ischemia, graft failure, and mortality. Catheter ablation represents a viable option to avoid further episodes of late-onset AFL after HTX.

Abstract:
Using assessment to improve learning has become a global phenomenon. Research has shown that applying assessment for learning (AfL) in classroom contexts could increase learning gains. Despite this, not much is done to substantiate how assessment as learning (AaL), a subset of AfL, has developed to support English-as-a-second-language (ESL) pupils’ learning of writing because teacher-centered pedagogy remains prevalent in the ESL educational landscape. In this article, I first introduce the idea of AaL. Second, I review five AaL studies with a focus on what research methods they adopted and evaluate whether these methods were applied appropriately. Third, I suggest four qualitative research methods that are suitable to track how AaL could facilitate pupils’ continued writing development. Fourth, I present a case study, exemplifying how I use three research methods to investigate young adolescents’ (Grade 7) mastery of AaL skills in a forthcoming project. This article ends with methodological implications, which enlighten scholars and teachers to investigate AaL in second language writing from a qualitative research perspective.

Abstract:
The efficacy of anti-programmedcelldeath1therapy (aPD-1), which was recently approved for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) treatment, can be enhanced by adjuvant ablative fractional laser (AFL) in syngeneic murine tumor models. In this explorative study, we aimed to assess locally applied AFL as an adjuvant to systemic aPD-1 treatment in a clinically relevant autochthonous BCC model. BCC tumors (n = 72) were induced in Ptch1+/−K14-CreER2p53fl/fl-mice (n = 34), and the mice subsequently received aPD-1 alone, AFL alone, aPD-1+AFL, or no treatment. The outcome measures included mouse survival time, tumor clearance, tumor growth rates, and tumor immune infiltration. Both aPD-1 and AFL alone significantly increased survival time relative to untreated controls (31 d and 34.5 d, respectively vs. 14 d, p = 0.0348–0.0392). Complementing aPD-1 with AFL further promoted survival (60 d, p = 0.0198 vs. aPD-1) and improved tumor clearance and growth rates. The BCCs were poorly immune infiltrated, but aPD-1 with adjuvant AFL and AFL alone induced substantial immune cell infiltration in the tumors. Similar to AFL alone, combined aPD-1 and AFL increased neutrophil counts (4-fold, p = 0.0242), the proportion of MHCII-positive neutrophils (p = 0.0121), and concordantly, CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell infiltration (p = 0.0061–0.0242). These descriptive results suggest that the anti-tumor response that is generated by aPD-1 with adjuvant AFL is potentially promoted by increased neutrophil and T-cell engraftment in tumors. In conclusion, local AFL shows substantial promise as an adjuvant to systemic aPD-1 therapy in a clinically relevant preclinical BCC model.

Abstract:
AimsThe clinical outcome and threshold of oral anticoagulation differs between patients with solitary atrial flutter (AFL) and those with AFL developing atrial fibrillation (AF) (AFL-DAF). We therefore investigated previously unevaluated predictors of AF development in patients with AFL, and also the predictive values of risk scores in predicting the occurrence of AF and ischaemic stroke. Methods and resultsParticipants were those diagnosed with AFL between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2013. Patients were classified into solitary AFL and AFL-DAF groups during follow-up. Finally, 4101 patients with solitary AFL and 4101 patients with AFL-DAF were included after 1:1 propensity score matching with CHA2DS2-VASc scores and their components, AFL diagnosis year and other comorbidities. The group difference in the prevalence of ischaemic stroke/transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and congestive heart failure (CHF) was substantial, that of vascular disease was moderate, and that of diabetes and hypertension was negligible. Therefore, we reweighted the component of heart failure as 2 (the same with stroke/TIA) and vascular disease as 1 in the proposed A2C2S2-VASc score. The proposed A2C2S2-VASc and CHA2DS2-VASCscores showed patients with AFL who had higher delta scores and follow-up scores had higher risk of AF development. The delta score outperformed the follow-up score in both scoring systems in predicting ischaemic stroke.ConclusionThis study showed that new-onset CHF, stroke/TIA and vascular disease were predictors of AF development in patients with AFL. The dynamic score and changes in both CHA2DS2-VASCand the proposed A2C2S2-VASc score could predict the development of AF and ischaemic stroke.

Harris-Reeves, Brooke. "Behaviour Management Strategies of Beginning AFL Coaches." Thesis, Griffith University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366567.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the behaviour management practices used by beginning AFL coaches. It examines beginning coaches’ perceptions of their role, and whether they believe it is their responsibility to manage athlete behaviour. The nature of coaching is multifaceted requiring them to take on many responsibilities. Consequently, coaches can have both a positive and negative effect on the athletes they train. Negative effects range from athlete drop out, injuries, and loss of confidence. On the other hand, positive effects include engaged and motivated athletes, increased self esteem and low attrition rates. It is for this reason that coaches need to ensure they create positive environments for athletes. A postmodern ethnographic approach was used to explore the experiences of AFL beginning coaching candidates. Data was collected via questionnaires, interviews and observations. Data analysis techniques were employed to identify themes and issues around beginning coach’s perceptions, strategies and practices in managing athlete behaviour. Analysis also included the use of a methodological tool that was developed, pilot tested and implemented as a mechanism for evaluating the effectiveness of behaviour management practices.

Said, Pace Doreen. "Assessment for Learning (AfL) in one Maltese state college." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21381/.

Full text
Abstract:
Assessment is a complex landscape. Debates about whether summative or formative assessment, or a combination of both, offers the best approach to assess students’ learning have been dominating international and local literature for years. This study seeks to further enrich these discussions by looking into the relationship between the beliefs and practices about Assessment for Learning (AfL) of Maltese state primary school teachers in one college. A college is a cluster of primary, middle and secondary schools within a particular geographical region. Furthermore, this study takes a step forward in investigating the influence of a collaborative action research approach on the teachers’ beliefs and practices about AfL. Throughout the study, positivism is resisted and the guiding theoretical framework is social constructionism based on an interpretive paradigm. This investigation was carried out in two phases over the span of one year, the first phase in May-June 2014 and the second phase from September 2014 to June 2015. The first phase consists of collecting data from two open-ended questionnaires with eighty-five teachers and eight Heads of Schools. The second part of the study consists of a nine-month long study with three teachers who were new to AfL. These participants took on the role of action researchers to improve their class situations by embedding a set of AfL strategies in their lessons. Multiple data sources including group discussions, individual feedback sessions, record-keeping booklets, semi-structured interviews with the teachers and their students and teachers’ self-written stories were utilised. Both research phases generated rich qualitative data which were analysed from a qualitative content analysis lens. Data coding and analysis were assisted by NVIVO. Findings of the first phase indicate that the overarching situation consists in a positive level of thought, which is accompanied by a limited understanding and a higher degree of mechanical AfL practice. Thus, the relationship is a divergent to a convergent one, therefore a complex one. This link transcends into degrees of semi-complex (Early Years) to a complex (Junior Years) relationship at the particular year group levels. Findings from the collaborative action research part show that this mode of teachers’ professional learning had an overall positive influence on the beliefs-to-practice relationship, albeit to different degrees of improvement. Nonetheless, the participants still ended with a wobbly belief about AfL having the same effect on all the students. This thesis argues that the belief about the pedagogy is also underpinned by the teachers’ perceptions of the students’ attitudes and motivation towards learning. Thus, the teachers’ perceptions of the students are affecting their expectations and perspectives of the success, or otherwise, of AfL. Hence, the belief to practice relationship is a matter of degree.

Abstract:
Moving away from home to embark on a career at an elite level involves the individual within a broader social ecology where a range of factors influence the dynamic transition. In 2000, Indigenous and non-Indigenous past and present AFL footballers and AFL administrative staff suggested that relocation was one of the issues faced by Indigenous AFL footballers. The focus of the current study was to learn about relocation and settlement experiences from the perspectives of 10 Indigenous Australian AFL footballers, examining the social, cultural, organisational, and psychological challenges. Five participants were drafted to the AFL within 12 months, and five participants were drafted to the AFL prior to 2002. Participants were listed players from seven Victorian AFL clubs. Interviews were also conducted with eight representatives (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) from organisations associated with the AFL. Players were asked questions about their own relocation and settlement experiences. Secondary informants were asked questions about their involvement with Indigenous players relocating and their perception of the relocation process for Indigenous players in the AFL. Interviews were semi-structured and conversational in style and analysed for unique and recurring themes using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Each of the stories reflected subtle differences experienced during relocation, highlighting the importance and value of using a phenomenological and qualitative framework to understand each player’s perspective and experiences of relocation. The findings demonstrated both facilitative and barrier factors influencing the relocation, settlement, and adaptation experiences. These included opportunity and social mobility, social support and kindredness, culture shock, and racism and homogeneity. Each player’s story about relocation and subsequent settlement and adaptation, highlighted the importance of family, connection, and kindredness as an overarching theme. The findings emphasise the need for receiving environments, in this case the AFL, to treat every player on an individual basis rather than grouping them into a collective. It is essential that a player is understood in relation to his socio-cultural context. The AFL has implemented significant changes to welcome cultural diversity, but as a mainstream organisation, it has been developed within mainstream values. Just as society in general needs to acknowledge Australian history and the overall discrepancies between Indigenous and non-Indigenous opportunities and living standards, the AFL has to continue to de-institutionalise stereotypes and increase the cultural awareness of all groups to continue being a forerunner of progressive race relations. The current study represents an important initial step in the identification and description of the relocation processes from the vantage point of Indigenous footballers.

Abstract:
Previous scholarship on labor rhetoric has concentrated on the impact of declining union membership and contemporary activist strategies on the part of unions. The press release is a common form of communication that organized labor employs in order to reach its publics. This study explores the press releases of the Texas State AFL-CIO to determine to what extent this level of labor discourse meets the criteria of a rhetorical genre. This study employs the methodology for generic criticism laid out by Foss for identifying genres. The study concludes that a genre of labor rhetoric exists and that the genre was used extensively to promote the Texas State AFL-CIO as a socially-conscious and politically motivated organization.

Rayner, Russell. "Training and testing of 1v1 agility in Australian football." Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2020. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/173773.

Full text
Abstract:
Little is known of how agility events occur in the sport of Australian football (AF). As a result, appropriate training and testing methods are unknown. This thesis investigated 1v1 agility in AF to evaluate alternative methods for training and testing agility. The thesis was undertaken in three studies. Study one investigated if training and testing practices used in elite AF align with the demands of competition. A notational analysis revealed substantial variation in movement patterns used by, and the cognitive demands of, athletes in agility events. A survey of high-performance managers in the AFL revealed that a mixture of open and closed training methods are used in elite AF, and that subjective agility assessment is preferred to formal testing. Study two assessed the reliability and ecological validity of a field-based test of attacking and defending agility for AF. The text exhibited excellent inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, as well as moderate test-retest reliability. Characteristics of the test were compared to the notational analysis to assess the ecological validity of the test. While the test did not fully replicate the agility demands of AF, the test improved ecological validity when compared to previous tests described in the literature. Study three evaluated the effectiveness of a four-week 1v1 training intervention for improving attacking and defending agility in Australian footballers. In addition, the study assessed the crossover of attacking training to defending agility and defending training to attacking agility. Improvements in attacking agility were found which were greater for attacking-trained athletes. However, no improvements in defending agility were realised. This thesis indicates that 1v1 training and testing is suitable for assessing and developing agility in Australian footballers. However, 1v1 training may be more suitable for improving attacking agility. Further, agility is context-specific, and testing and training should consider the role of the athlete.

Abstract:
This paper looks at how undergraduates look at assessment in Higher Education. It focuses on their views about assessment practices in five Portuguese public universities. The main purpose is to look at the students’ perceptions of assessment in higher education taking into account the assessment methods used, the influence of assessment in their motivation to learn as well as self-regulation of the learning process. Data were collected through questionnaires in five Portuguese Public Universities in different fields of knowledge. An intervention project focused on Assessment for Learning (AfL), with students enrolled at an Engineering programme, in one public university in Portugal, in one course with student-centred methodologies and AfL practices was also carried out and evaluated. Findings are presented according the categories emerging from the data. Issues of assessment methods, the connection between teaching, learning and assessment as well as the impact of AfL environments on students’ perceptions are analysed. Implications of the findings for assessment, teaching and learning process are discussed.

Abstract:
This study focused on understanding the interactions between alloying elements in a magnesium (Mg) matrix and the effect of the alloying elements on corrosion behavior of Mg-alloys. The development of atomic force microscope (AFM) techniques has enabled the evaluation of physical and chemical properties of surfaces at the sub-micron level. Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) is particularly useful for studying localized corrosion phenomena of alloys. SKPFM generates a map of the potential distribution across a sample with a resolution of probe tip radius, nowadays ranging from 5 to 30 nm. Furthermore, the open circuit potential of various pure metals in solution is linearly related to the Volta potential value measured in air immediately after exposure to corrosive media. SKPFM is a useful tool to practically assess the nobility of a surface. This technique has been applied to the heterogeneous microstructure of Mg-Zn-Ca-RE (RE = Zr, Nd, Ga) alloys and provided clear evidence regarding the shape, position, compositional inhomogeneities and local practical nobility of intermetallic particles. Correlation between the measured potential distribution and the reactivity of these particles has been shown. Atomic force lithography (AFL, scratching with the hard tip) is a controlled method for local disruption of the protective oxide film that naturally formed on an Mg-surface in air. Combining SKPFM and AFL, the stability of the passive film and the tendency for stabilization of localized corrosion can be monitored. In addition, the lateral imaging capabilities of the AFM provide an approach to study the role of different microstructural features such as grain boundaries and impurities in the process of inducing localized corrosion.

Abstract:
Grey box fuzzing is one of the most successful methods for automatic vulnerability detection. However, conventional Grey box Fuzzers like AFL can open perform fuzzing against the whole input and spend more time on smaller seeds with lower execution time, which significantly impact fuzzing efficiency for complicated input types. In this work, we introduce one intelligent grey box fuzzing for Intel Media driver, MediaFuzzer, which can perform effective fuzzing based on selective fields of complicated input. Also, with one novel calling depth-based power schedule biased toward seed corpus which can lead to deeper calling chain, it dramatically improves the vulnerability exposures (~6.6 times more issues exposed) and fuzzing efficiency (~2.7 times more efficient) against the baseline AFL for Intel media driver with almost negligible overhead.

The Overlap Syndrome of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Systematic Review. Abstract:
Review question / Objective: To provide the essential findings in the field of overlap syndrome of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnea, including prevalence, possible predictors, association with clinical outcomes, and severity compared to both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnea patients. Condition being studied: OSA is characterized by complete cessation (apnea) or significant decrease (hy-popnea) in airflow during sleep and recurrent episodes of upper airway collapse cause it during sleep leading to nocturnal oxyhemoglobin desaturations and arousals from rest. The recurrent arousals which occur in OSA lead to neurocognitive consequences, daytime sleepiness, and reduced quality of life. Because of apneas and hypopneas, patients are experiencing hypoxemia and hypercapnia, which result in increasing levels of catecholamine, oxidative stress, and low-grade inflammation that lead to the appearance of cardio-metabolic consequences of OSA. COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease defined by persistent, usually pro-gressive AFL (airflow limitation). Changes in lung mechanics lead to the main clini-cal manifestations of dyspnea, cough, and chronic expectoration. Furthermore, patients with COPD often suffer from anxiety and depression also, the risk of OSA and insomnia is higher than those hospitalized for other reasons. Although COPD is twice as rare as asthma but is the cause of death eight times more often.
