Full textAlthough individuals generally evolve in a fluid environment, where everything goes according to their expectations, they can sometimes be confronted with unexpected situations that don't conform to their knowledge or beliefs. For example, a train announced as cancelled arrives at the station, or a friend doesn't act in line with his past attitudes or behaviors (expressing strong ecological values while not sorting his garbage). For a human being who is motivated by a need for consistency (Abelson et al., 1968; Cialdini et al., 1995), being exposed to such situations is an uncomfortable experience. Cognitive inconsistency generates affects - essentially negative ones - and a motivation to return to a state of consistency, the latter leading to the implementation of strategies aimed at making the individual's expectations and the situation he or she is experiencing consistent (Gawronski & Brannon, 2019). However, there is some evidence to suggest that inconsistency is easily acceptable to some individuals. Several scandals and political affairs suggest that powerful individuals may act contradictorily or be confronted with their own inconsistencies without expressing the discomfort such a situation would provoke in less hierarchically endowed individuals. Does power protect against the effects of exposure to inconsistency? This is the question this thesis aims to answer. Power and its effects have been widely studied in social psychology, as well as the effects of cognitive inconsistency on individuals. But to our knowledge, few studies have attempted to observe the effects of power on the management of cognitive inconsistency. The aim of this research program is to test the hypothesis that social power limits the effects of cognitive inconsistency. Holding power would then act as a shield to protect individuals from unpleasant effects, notably the negative affects engendered by exposure to inconsistency. Seven studies designed to test the effects of power on different types of situations generating cognitive inconsistency (inconsistency caused by automatic processes, targeting the knowledge system, and involving the individual's self) are presented. The results obtained are not stable and therefore do not allow us to formally validate our general hypothesis. However, in two studies, a moderating effect of power on the level of negative affect caused by exposure to inconsistency was found. The same is observed for the compensatory strategies implemented by individuals following exposure to inconsistency. The contributions and limitations of this work are discussed in terms of the processual and emotional aspects that may be involved in understanding it

Full textThe aim of this project was to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms by which positive emotions modulate cognition and behavior. By using behavioral and electrophysiological measures, we addressed this question in a population of healthy controls, and in patients suffering from schizophrenia, because in this disease affect does not appropriately modulate behavior. Our results show that positive emotions globally decrease attentional preparation, a cognitive control mechanism. Nevertheless, when associated with a high level of motivation, they allow for improved recruitment of cognitive control. This modulation of cognitive control by positive emotions is more likely to appear in individuals who have a marked tendency towards experiencing negative emotions. In patients suffering from schizophrenia, this modulation is not appropriate, not even for non-consciously induced positive affective experiences

Full textPositivity, a common and latent factor between self-esteem, optimism and life satisfaction, is the "basic disposition" of positive affect. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the influence of positivity on mental health. It is made up upon three objectives : - (1) to define the place of positivity in the subjectivity of mental health by proposing : (a) to conceive the structure of the cognitive dimension in a multidimensional way, involving the presence of the dimensions of positive cognition and negative cognition, (b) adapt and validate the positivity scale of Caprara and collaborators (2012) in French, (c) a model of mental subjectivity composed of four dimensions : positive cognition, negative cognition, positive affect and negative affect. - (2) to determine the role of positivity among the other indicators of positive mental health by exploring : (1) the major influence of positivity on positive psychological functioning, positive affect and negative affect, (2) the function of positivity in the influence of autonomous motivational regulation of behaviors on happiness. - (3) to identify the role of positivity in the effect of functional emotional regulation on the affective sphere of mental health, both in positive and negative situations. Finally, this thesis presents a meta-model explaining the place and the preponderant influence of positivity on mental health. Based on the meta-theory of self-determination, a theoretical articulation will be put forward, reflecting the development of positivity in a similar way to that of the human being

Full textThe objective of this work is to evaluate the quality of insight and the characteristics of impulsivity in patients with borderline personality disorder. We assessed cognitive and clinical insight (BCIS, SUMD), impulsivity (UPPS) and symptomatology (BPQ). Our studies 1 and 2 assessed the impulsivity level of borderline personality disorder and the impact of the positive and negative urgency dimensions on symptomatology. Our studies 4 and 5 assessed the quality of clinical and cognitive insight and its impact on impulsivity and symptomatology. In study 5 specifically we linked the metacognition dimension to specific mechanisms and confirmed the presence of good insight level in borderline patients as well as a high level of metacognition. Our study 3 examined the difference between impulsivity and aggression in the field of personality disorders. Finally, our 6th study examines the dynamics of positive urgency in relation to insight. Our following studies explore the dynamics of impulsivity, highlighting the important role of negative but also positive urgency. This work made it possible to complete theoretical knowledge, to highlight the importance of positive emotions in the impulsive processes of TPBs, to confirm the presence of good quality insight and to explore new avenues for therapies for this disorder

Full textOpiate illicit use represents one of the most severe sanitary problems throughout the world. Among humans, the emergence of the opiate withdrawal (OW) syndrome after cessation of opiate intake is considered as one of the key motivational elements that lead to the vulnerability to opiates relapse. Therefore, the OW is characterized by a various alterations of the behavioral and neurobiological homeostasis responses to stress which are determinants in opiate dependence. The Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system is the major coordinator of stress-responsive circuitry. Through its two receptors CRF1 and CRF2, the CRF system has recently emerged as major contributor in the development of components of the OW syndrome. The aim of this thesis is to determine the role of CRF2 receptor in the negative affective states and motivational disorders implicated in opiate relapse during OW.Behavioral and biological experiments were conducted in CRF2 receptor-deficient mice (CRF2-/-). We reported that genetic deletion of the CRF2 receptor eliminates dysphoria and molecular alterations elicited by OW without impairing brain, neuroendocrine and autonomic stress-coping responses to withdrawal. Using behavioral approaches of operant responding to highly palatable food (HPF) we found that CRF2-/- reduces motivational disorders induced by intermittent morphine injections and withdrawal. Finally, we described a mouse model of stress-induced food reinstatement seeking behavior during prolonged OW. Furthermore, we reported a gender dimorphism in the role of the CRF2 receptor in the stress-induced reinstatement of HPF seeking behavior long-lasing after opiate treatment. These findings underscore the importance of CRF2 receptor as possible effective treatment of the critical problem of opiate dependence

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PT) is still nowadays one of the most neglected public health problems. This study had as its main goals to evaluate the perception of Quality of Life (QOL) and its relation with social-demographic, clinical and psicossocial variables Anxiety, Depression, Negative Affect and Satisfaction Social Support in PT outpatients. For that, a socio-demographic questionnaire, a clinical questionnaire, the SF-36 version 1.0 Health Survey, a specific module to evaluate QOL in PT, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Satisfaction with Social Support Scale were administered to 95 patients that were being treated for TP for the first time in two Clinics of Pneumological Diagnosis in Oporto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Of these patients, 57 (60%) were male, with ages between 21 and 65 (M=41,60; DP=13,72). The results suggest a low QOL, the presence of clinically significant affective sintomathology, and median Satisfaction with Social Support. Male patients showed statistically better QOL especially in Role Limitations due to Emocional Problems. Age was correlated with all QOL´s domains at the exception of Bodily Pain. Participants with associated diseases to TP showed statistically lower QOL in terms of Role Limitations due to emotional problems and Bodily Pain. Results showed statistically significant correlations between all SF-36 dimensions (with the exception of Bodily Pain) and all the psicossocial variables assessed. Results also showed that significant affective sintomathology and median satisfaction with social support suggest lower QOL. Global Satisfaction with Social Support and Depression were the best predictors of QOL, concerning Mental Health, General Health, Social Functioning and Vitality. It is important to know better the causality relations between all indicators considered since this kind of findings could be used in the context of TP´s prevention and biopsicossocial treatment

Full textFrom the birth of psychoanalysis the conceptualization of the hallucinatory is intimately intertwined with that of the unconscious functioning. In the first topic, the model of the hallucinatory realization of desire explains the baby’s mental functioning, i.e., primal hallucination, the functioning of dreams and neurotic patients in the transference. However, Freud suggests an alternative conceptualization in Constructions in Analysis. Through the hallucinatory, unsymbolized nuclei of historical truth may be re-presented in the treatment. Drawing on Winnicott’s, Green's and Roussillon’s contributions, the Author develops the Freudian heritage and suggests a model in which the intrapsychic and intersubjective dimensions are integrated. The Author puts forward and discusses the existence of a hallucinatory background of the psychism, ruled by the repetition compulsion, that re-activates the psychic inscriptions of early relational experiences. When the primal encounter with the object has failed, traces of these traumatic experiences remain inscribed in the psychism and can be hallucinatory re- activated in the transference in the desperate attempt to find a first representation. Drawing on the case material of psychotic children and adolescents, the Author analyses the complex working through of the countertransference in order to contain this transference of the negative to accompany patients in their arduous way towards (primary) symbolization and the construction of a transitional space of playing
