Abstract:
Japanese have been known to have a special notion toward the aestheticism which deals with human experiences. They are ingenious about finding subtle beauty within every little thing which exists in nature and apply that to their architecture. What are the secrets behind all this? This thesis focuses on the research of Japanese aesthetic principles to find out the way for application in the architecture in the United States.

Mercer, Leah Gwenyth. "Complementarity and the uncertainty principle as aesthetic principles : the practice and performance of The Physics Project." Queensland University of Technology, 2009. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/29938/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the generative processes developed over two stages of creative development and the performance of The Physics Project at the Loft at the Creative Industries Precinct at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) from 5th – 8th April 2006 as a case study, this exegesis considers how the principles of contemporary physics can be reframed as aesthetic principles in the creation of contemporary performance. The Physics Project is an original performance work that melds live performance, video and web-casting and overlaps an exploration of personal identity with the physics of space, time, light and complementarity. It considers the acts of translation between the language of physics and the language of contemporary performance that occur via process and form. This exegesis also examines the devices in contemporary performance making and contemporary performance that extend the reach of the performance, including the integration of the live and the mediated and the use of metanarratives.

Abstract:
This study problematizes the criticism Oscar Wilde received for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and aims to explore the aesthetic style he employed when writing the novel. The theoretical approach used in this essay is based on the perspectives of New Historicism; Wilde’s life and how people reasoned during his lifetime are brought into focus and different influences on his work are examined, especially evidence of biographical aspects as well as aesthetic elements in the novel. Wilde himself refuted that he had written an immoral story, insisting that morality was not part of Aestheticism. He also made an effort to clarify his aesthetic objectives in later editions by removing some ambiguous sentences and adding a preface.

Wang, Keda. "The aesthetic principles of soundscape in architectural design and built environment." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/570.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to establish a practical way for architectural designers to take advantage of the relationship between soundscape and architectural aesthetics. The whole study aides in providing a structural framework by which architectural designers could incorporate acoustic elements into their design, with aesthetic concerns rather than for practical purpose. The discussions of soundscape and architecture forms are organized in the order of point, line, plane and space to present my personal observations on the issue. Three graphic systems are developed based on the previous researches of soundscape to visualize the coexistence of sonic identities and visual identities in built environment and how both of them interact to create a multi-sensory experience for visitors. Among the three systems, the Soundscape Map system is particularly introduced to demonstrate some case studies where soundscape elements are successfully employed to strengthen the construction of architectural spaces and forms. The goal of this research is to open a door for architectural researchers to discover the interconnection between soundscape and architecture, with the hope that the graphic systems introduced could be useful for effective designs with soundscape concerns in built environment.

Dong, Ren Wen. "The application of traditional Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/344358.

Abstract:
The Application of Traditional Chinese Aesthetic Principles to Contemporary International Design. This is a submission by publication consisting of 13 major design projects and an accompanying research report. China is undergoing phenomenal economic growth that is having a major impact on the social and cultural development of the Republic. Accompanying the growth is an unprecedented urbanisation of the population and expansion of the cities. This has meant an explosion in the building industries. At the same time China is moving towards the central position in the global economy that also has huge cultural implications. This is the context in which I have pursued my professional practice as an interior and architectural designer. Some of the questions I have been attempting to address through my practice arise directly out of this context. In the fast expansion of the field of interior design that has accompanied this growth it is vital that Chinese designers are aware of the cultural context of their work. Is it possible for Chinese designers working in the developing international context of contemporary design projects in China to make a unique contribution to the field that is specifically Chinese? This presentation of my practice will provide a cohesive argument for an approach to design in the international arena that remains specific to the cultural and temporal context of its origins. I will specifically demonstrate solutions I have found to the application of ancient Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design problems. As practice-based research I have given much thought to the methodologies I have employed. I will provide a detailed outline of these 'action' research methodologies and definitions of the types of knowledge employed in the following report. The visual evidence is also accompanied by descriptions of the projects including the briefs, design solutions and specific Chinese characteristics. The presentation of my practice in this form provides evidence of the ways in which cultural specificity can be maintained within the international design arena and makes a meaningful contribution to debates and knowledge in the area of cultural diversity and design.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasal skin cancer, its location by facial aesthetic subunits and the type of reconstructive procedures performed for each nasal subunit after excision for nasal skin tumors. Observational cross-sectional study of all consecutive patients with the diagnosis of skin tumor located in the nasal unit, treated from 2018 to 2019 by the department of head and neck surgery of a general hospital. 60 patients were treated with nasal skin tumors excisions. A total of 52 patients (86,6%) had basal cell skin cancer, 7 (11,6%) had squamous cell skin cancer and 1 (1,6%) had melanoma. Fifty-nine patients (98.33%) presented a primary tumor and just 1 case (1,66%) recived a previous surgical treatment. Regardless of the type of tumor, the tip subunit was the most often involved with 29 (48,33%) cases in total. Despite of the nasal aesthetic subunit affected, the most frequent type of procedure used for reconstruction was the rotation or advancement flap, based on aesthetic nasal subunits, which was performed in 39 cases (65%). Nasal reconstruction after skin cancer can be very complex, especially since all patients have high expectations about the results. In order to achieve good results, there is a necessity for careful analysis of the defect, correct planning and excellent technical execution of the procedures Frequently, staged procedures will be needed to achieve an optimal result.

Hancock, Darryl J. "Improving the Environment in Distance Learning Courses Through the Application of Aesthetic Principles." Scholar Commons, 2004. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1065.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary goal of this project has been to research and create aesthetic visual environments in distance-learning media through the application of expert criteria and to explore the effects of those environments on student satisfaction and motivation. To accomplish this three instructors with distinct courses were selected to apply aesthetic criteria within the process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Courses selected were Art Appreciation -- ARTS 1100, Advanced Surveying -- ENGR 2502, and Introduction to Sociology -- SOCI 1101. The project goal was subdivided into four objectives. 1) Develop criteria for the inclusion of visual aesthetics in the online environment. 2) Design and develop online courses using guidelines for the inclusion of aesthetics. 3) Collect and compare data from students about the level of satisfaction with the aesthetic appearance of the online environment. 4) Explore the effect of an aesthetic environment on student motivation. This project has demonstrated the environments of distance learning courses can be improved through the application of aesthetic principles. The selected criteria were useful to this Instructional Designer and could prove successful in improving the appearance of other online courses.

Tucker, Benjamin Scott. "Atonality, modality, and incantation in two works for trumpet by André Jolivet, with a discussion of his technical and aesthetic principles." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186692.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents the most salient features of Jolivet's mature musical style as exemplified in two of his major solo works for trumpet. The two works which serve as the musical focus of the document are one of his latest works, Arioso Barocco (1968) for trumpet and organ, and a work situated near the center of his compositional output, the Second Concerto (1954) for trumpet and a thirteen-member chamber ensemble. Following an exposition of Jolivet's life and musical development, we begin by examining five technical principles of harmony, texture, melody, and rhythm, which Jolivet set forth in a 1946 article. His aesthetic principles as stated in this and other articles by the composer are also examined. The most important of these aesthetic principles holds that music is by nature incantatory or has an incantatory mission--that is, it has the power to connect man with the cosmos, eternity, or that which is greater than man himself. At the heart of this incantatory aesthetic ideal is Jolivet's belief in the primacy of expressive melody, free of the harmonic restraints of traditional tonality. The musical analysis proceeds by identifying in Arioso Barocco the specific application of Jolivet's technical and aesthetic principles to the music, as well as considering formal structure and thematic process. The Second Concerto is then examined in the same way, and a stylistic and technical comparison is drawn between the two works. The study concludes that while both works serve the same underlying atonal and incantatory musical aesthetic, they are markedly different in many significant technical characteristics and stylistic traits. In view of the fact that both works come from what is considered Jolivet's third and final creative period, these findings give cause for further research into Jolivet's compositions from this period to determine whether they do in fact constitute one creative period or two separate and distinct periods.

Gourova, Maria Andreevna. "The Aesthetic Idea and the Unity of Cognitive Faculties in Kant's Aesthetics." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/41.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, I will try to answer the question how the aesthetic idea in Kant’s aesthetic theory accounts for the universal validity of the subjective judgment of taste, and what the nature of the aesthetic idea is that makes such account possible. This claim about universal validity of the subjective judgment of taste in Kant’s philosophy is regarded to be problematic because of the seeming contradiction between the subjectivity of a judgment and its universality. What can solve this contradiction, from my point of view, is the role of the aesthetic idea that it plays in the judgment of taste and the subjective principle that puts cognitive powers of mind in a harmonious free relationship. The main feature that makes the aesthetic idea the source of the universal validity is its universal communicability expressed in the universally pleasurable feeling of the judgment of taste.

Knapp, Ferdinand Mathes. "Dandyism as a principle of aesthetic composition : a study of Georg Büchner, Franz Kafka and Oswald Wiener." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2002. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/265453.

Full text
Abstract:
In considering the dandy, this study does not concern itself so much with the historical figure, but rather with the specific mode of dandyistic writing. It seeks to understand the term "dandyism", and so explain the move from the dandy as a social phenomenon to dandyism as a principle of aesthetic composition. The core of my argument is that the dandy-figure has from the beginning constituted itself as a written text, and that this understanding opens up questions of identity, origination and the nature of writing. Part I takes Buchner's own dress-sense as a point of departure, through an analysis of Dantons Tod and Leonce und Lena, which focuses on questions of clothing, of the symbolic economy of seeing, and of the relationship between machinery and writing. Proceeding from the dandyism of Buchner to that of Kafka, I argue in part II that Kafka' s dandyism is a development of Buchner' s. Kafka addresses the question of clothing throughout his writing, starting with the shiny surfaces of elegant clothing that particularly occupy him in his early texts (Betrachtung and Beschreibung eines Kampfes) and moving to the virtual nakedness of the very last ones (Ein Hungerkunstler). The analysis demonstrates how Kafka's early aestheticism folds into the late asceticism, with the dandy embodying the tension between the aesthetic and the ascetic. Finally, I show in part ill how Wiener takes the dandy figure and exhausts it. For him, the dandy is a thing of the past; in his essay Eine Art Einzige, for example, he defines the dandy as a "letzter metaphysiker". Paradoxically, Wiener frames his essay on the dandy with highly technical discourses, and so this chapter does not take Wiener' s account of the dandy and his epistemology of machines at face value, but rather reads them together and against each other. In order to show how he achieves this, I undertake a close examination of Wiener' s main work, verbesserung von mitteleuropa, roman. The Conclusion brings the various threads together in a historic framework and so demonstrates a continuity (but not identity) between the three authors in the mode of dandyistic writing.

Buckle, Luke. "Contemporary Neorealist principles in Abbas Kiarostami's filmmaking (1997-2005)." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/9036.

Full text
Abstract:
Iranian film has in recent decades comprised an increasingly important and influential cinema. The Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979 paved the way for freedom of artistic and literary expression, communicating a new generation of unheard voices in Iranian society. More specifically Iranian cinema has progressed in maintaining an identity that reflects both a contemporary nation and auteuristic cinematics. Abbas Kiarostami is one of the more recent and leading film directors rewarded with critical and filmmaking acclaim out of Iran, producing contemporary snapshots of society and culture. His filmmaking methods and ideals are very much reflective of the style of post Second World War Italian Neorealism. In context and filmmaking principles Kiarostami adapts the conventions of Neorealism in exploring contemporary Iranian socio-cultural problems in a similar manner. This project aims to explore the relationship between the style and context of his filmmaking in terms of mise-en-scène, themes and socio-cultural concerns. It shows how Kiarostami creates a distinctive form of Neorealist filmmaking to get at the ‘truths’ of contemporary Iranian life in a particular way. In doing so an emergent strand of a modern-Neorealism becomes apparent.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis concerns the problem of natural curiosity. The first part deals with the biological notion of the instinct and abstracts seventeen observable properties allowing the empirical study of instinctual systems in the laboratory. The second part clarifies the problem of natural curiosity, exposes that of human intelligence and details the evolution of exploratory behavior in the course of phylogeny. The notion of the instinct is applied to the description of knowledge-acquisition in humans. The theoretical consequences of this application are detailed. The logic of curiosity is examined at the philosophical, historical, psychological, biological and mathematical levels. A formal model of knowledge-acquisition is proposed. The relation between learning and conflict is underlined. The paradox of intelligence is described formally. Several theoretical leads are proposed to facilitate the study of the relation between knowledge and meaning. The third part deals with the problem of curiosity’s satiation and deploys the theoretical consequences of a series of experiments conducted in Europe regarding the problem of aesthetic emotions. The hypothesis that aesthetic emotions might correspond to a satiation of natural curiosity is examined at the biological and psychological levels. The particular case of the relation between temperature and cognition as observed in the case of non-thermoregulatory shivering is discussed and a series of physical and biological hypotheses are proposed. A formal model of processing fluency is introduced to facilitate its empirical study. A mathematical description of psychogenic shivering is proposed. A mathematical description of narrative tension is proposed. In the appendix, the results of a series of five psychophysiological studies concerning psychogenic shivers are detailed. These fives studies have been successfully replicated three times in two distinct European populations. Among others, the results demonstrate that incoherence inhibits positive psychogenic shivering

Hunt, James Christopher. ""We Shall Have to Make the Best of It:" The Conversion of Dennis Sciama." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39458.

Full text
Abstract:
The cosmologist Dennis W. Sciama (1926-1999) was a long-standing advocate of the steady state model of the universe. This theory, originally proposed in 1948 by Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle, suggested that the universe was eternal, and unchanging on the largest scales. Contrary to the popular image of a scientist as a dispassionate, unbiased investigator of nature, Sciama fervently hoped the steady state model to be correct. In addition, and also pace the stereotypical image of a scientist, Sciama was motivated significantly by "extrascientific" or aesthetic factors in his adoption of the model. Finally, Sciama, in a stark contrast to the naive falsificationism usually presented as a virtue of the "scientific method," went through a several-year period of attempting to "save" the model from hostile data. However, Sciama abandoned the model in 1966 due to increasingly reliable data relating to the distribution of quasars. Thus the Sciama case also stands as a counterexample to irrationalist criticisms of science, according to which scientists can and will always find ways to hold on to their "pet" theories until they die, regardless of contradictory data. Sciama's conversion also sheds light on the iterative process that goes on as scientists localize and attempt to repair faults in their theories.

Erdem, Elif. "Intervention Principles In Wet Spaces For Contemporary Residential Use, In Eski Foca Traditional Dwellings." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12608405/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional dwellings are one of the most important elements of Turkey&rsquo
s cultural heritage, which constitute a large part of the total quantity of all our traditional buildings. These buildings also have an important economic value due to their forming a huge part of the housing stock of Turkey. However these buildings disappear rapidly, because of many reasons. Besides several external factors, which cause their loss indirectly, such as pressure of the urbanization, the lack or defects of the legal arrangements, shortage in the financial sources&hellip
etc, they also have internal problems such as, structural, functional and environmental ones which lead their users to abandon them, similarly resulting in their deterioration and loss in the long term. Inadequacy of the service units in traditional dwellings are one of the most important problems belonging to the category of functional problems. They will be abandoned or physically altered by unconscious interventions as long as the needs related to the service functions are not met. Because the original service units of the traditional dwellings, especially the ones called &lsquo
wet spaces&rsquo
in today&rsquo
s contemporary houses do not respond to our needs, and are under the requested modern living standards. The change of the traditional way of life parallel to technological developments has resulted in the change in uses within the house and changes in needs and habits of the people. Therefore, the major objective of this study was to make the necessary rehabilitations related to the service needs in terms of adapting the traditional dwellings to contemporary residential use. It was assumed that this study would offer guidelines to eliminate similar types of problems related to the service needs of all the traditional dwellings in Foç
a. In this direction, the architecture of the traditional Foç
a dwellings with special interest in their service spaces were researched in the site survey. Besides their original architectural characteristics, their physical alteration status regarding to their needs, their problems and desires of their users were determined both with physical analyses and social questionnaires. All the interventions were assessed by taking into consideration both their conservation and physical needs of their inhabitants. In the proposal phase of the study, the spatial potentials and carrying capacities of the dwellings were determined while also considering the preservation of their values. The dwellings were grouped after this assessment according to their spatial potentials and problems. The appropriate types of interventions, aimed at meeting the minimum requirements, sometimes realized by rehabilitation of an existent space and in other cases by the addition of a new space were revealed according to the needs and problems of the dwellings. Finally, the principle decisions for the interventions were proposed by considering the necessary balance between usage and preservation in each proposal.

Kovacek, Tena. "Principles of Designing an Experiential Lighting Showroom : Finding the Balance between Demonstrating the Experiential and the Technical-Aesthetical Qualities of Luminaires." Thesis, KTH, Ljusdesign, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-231870.

Full text
Abstract:
An analysis of existing showrooms showed that absence of atmosphere makes it hard for clients to imagine effects in a context, and that lack of guidance by the light makes the experience of the showroom overwhelming or static. Also, clients often prioritize luminaires' design over light effect, even in architectural lighting where design should be negligible. This thesis investigates whether it is possible by prioritizing light effect, to optimize the showroom experience and to direct clients' focus on the light, while minimizing the influence of design on the impression and eventually choice of luminaire. In order to achieve these goals, three main concepts are suggested – guiding light, contrasting atmospheres and sequence of presenting light effects first and luminaires afterwards. These enable good communication about light which is essential for clients to focus on the atmosphere created by the light, rather than price and design. Experiments were conducted in the basement of a Croatian company's office, where the exhibits were not the luminaires, but their light. Visitors' priorities before and after going through the installation changed significantly, which might mean that the light effect made an impact and influenced examinees to base their choice of luminaire more on light effect, than design. It is concluded that the used concepts contributed to putting more focus on the light itself. Instead of focusing solely on light experience or product, a balance between the two was achieved by prioritizing and showing the light effect first, and only afterwards joining it with the product, thus offering visitors a more complete experience of the luminaire.

Abstract:
After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, urban planning was one of the main instruments for the development of national economy. In this respect, urban plans for numerous cities and towns were prepared between 1923 and 1940 in Turkey. This thesis reveals the reflections of Republican ideology to urban planning principles. The aims of this study are to clarify the political concepts that were active in the Early Republican Period, translation of political concepts to spatial context and to reveal the relation between urban planning experiences and political ideology between 1923 and 1940 in the Republic of Turkey. For this reason, this thesis study examines the construction of Republican ideology in city space via urban planning. The construction of the Republican Revolution in city space is examined in terms of planning practices and evolution of urbanism. The examples of cities planned at that period are evaluated in the context of political ideals and planning principles that were operative in urban planning between 1923 and 1940 in Turkey.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to establish which aspects influence students’ successful learning of design skills through contextually integrated learning support material for the design and technology education programme at the University of Pretoria. The purpose of the research is threefold: • The first aim is to investigate the extent to which the electronic tutorial, Design in Action (hereafter referred to as “the tutorial”) contributes to students’ (novice designers) design theory in a technological context i.e. to indicate whether the level of sophistication of the exemplary graphics and explanatory text is suited to the context. • The second aim is to establish the levels of learning achieved by learners as a result of the intervention using Design in Action in order to indicate the adequacy of the learning support material in achieving the learning outcomes of the unit. • The third aim is to establish possible improvements for the tutorial to increase its effectiveness in terms of curriculum, media&technology, learning&instruction and teacher education&didactics (Van den Akker, 1999). The findings of this preliminary study will be used in broader studies focused on the design and development of contextually integrated learning support material for design and technology education students. This research is a qualitative case study, including the evaluation of levels of learning of first year pre-service design and technology students, conducted in the interpretative paradigm, within the theoretical frame of socially responsible research (Reeves, 2000). The evaluation of the levels of learning was based on a model designed by Kirkpatrick (Kirkpatrick, 1994). The model delineates four levels of instruction (training) outcomes: reaction, learning, behaviour, and results.

When human constructs the physical surrounding, a psychological environment of meanings is being created, accompanying the world of shapes and masses. Interventions into built environment affect the meanings extracted from the composition of the physical setting and the response of people to design strategies reveals the importance of them. To this end evaluative analyses are studied in the second chapter and the third chapter introduces a matrix of design principles. According to these evaluations, most design concerns are being underestimated, resulting in the monotony of the streetscape but the streetscape appears to be visually more ordered compared to the past.

This thesis discusses the contemporary developments of Mario Costa's aesthetics of communication in the context of nanoconvergence (the pervasive process of integration between digital, biological, computational and cognitive interfaces). Nanoconvergence is a historical event similar to the advent of cyberspace, which carries an equivalent potential for disruption. Just as Mario Costa's aesthetics of communication present a technological sublime which is mediated via technical images, we propose in this thesis the emergence of an aesthetics of nanocommunication, which proposes a nanotechnological sublime which is mediated through technological individuation. While Mario Costa's technological sublime relies entirely on the Kantian sublime, the nanotechnological sublime is inspired by the transimanent sublime of Schopenhauer. Mario Costa's technological sublime is connected to the virtual and to the digital reproducibility of imaging techniques. However, the nanotechnological sublime refers instead to the materiality and self-reproducibility of its principle of individuation. The nanotechnological principle of individuation acts as a transductive medium between unity of matter and the multiplicity of its material elements and compounds, as stated by Bainbridge, Stiegler and Simondon. The nanotechnological sublime is explored through three stages of research: scientific - research and presentation of the technoscientific achievements of nanotechnology; philosophical - analysis of the specificity of the sublime aesthetics peculiar to these advances in science, and artistic - research and analysis of nanoimages and the collaborative production of video art based on the concept of the nanosublime. Contemporary nanoimages reveal a nanotechnological imaginarium where references to alchemy and medieval ideology are present both in scientific discourse and the poetics of nanoart. The nanotechnological sublime belongs to the semiotic realm in which the visible and invisible are not in opposition, for the materiality of physical reality, established through quantum modulations nanotechnologically manipulated, is perfectly united with the immaterial lightness of the informational codes that enable nanoconvergence

The mosaic of human frailty is revealed in Freud‟s Civilization and its discontents through the precarious and finite existence, the hardships and threats arising from Nature and the ambiguous relations with the other. Given this injunction, the Freudian subject, subsumed and insurgent in the cultural field, disturbed by the noise of the drives and the dark tones of the oppression of the reality principle, is endlessly confronted with the desire and the demands of external reality. The theme is developed from notions of psychoanalysis present in the work above in liaison and dialogue with the fields of social philosophy, questioned by two symbolic registers of human expression, politics and aesthetics. The main question lies in the bonds between civilization and culture that determine a complex and oppressive system of needs for the subject in order to glimpse the faces of the contemporary malaise. The central hypothesis is that despite the complexity that engenders unease and the wide adaptive force that impels it, its social configuration is not impervious to the dialectical telos of history and its properties: coercion and rebellion, subjugation and emancipation. From the hypothesis, two perspectivations arise: the possibilities of overcoming the self-reproduction of the politics that overweighs the reality principle, and the scope of the subversion of experience, a quality inherent in art and the aesthetic function, as an emancipatory path. The reflective and analytical course of this thesis was based on the clarity that subjectivation processes are not separated from their historical production; or in other words, it is the real historical process that constitutes the subject in the present state of things

Visual literacy is an ability to understand and create visual images. Learning visual literacy is crucial in order to make appropriate interpretation and judgment of visuals. This study aimed to apply 14 aesthetic principles to develop and evaluate visual literacy courseware. Design-based research (DBR) was implemented in eight phases to create and assess the instructional materials, namely discover, organize, analyze, design, implement, apply, evaluate and discuss the results. After the courseware has been developed, expert review was conducted to provide feedback for the revision of the instructional materials. The researcher then made revisions in accordance. Next, the courseware was implemented for two weeks. In week one, the 14 principles were instructed and discussed. Groups of students were asked to take 10 pictures based on the principles as a course assignment. In week two, students presented their assignments. Instructor and peer evaluations were conducted after each group presentation. Then the satisfaction questionnaire was given to students to investigate their reflection and provide further discussion as well as future suggestions. Findings in this study indicated that the experts advised revisions of the instructional activities and content sequence. As for student satisfaction, students held positive attitudes toward the instructional materials and agreed that the content is beneficial for them. This study also found that the instructional materials were not only useful to help students build a sense of aesthetics, but also helpful for developing the ability of visual literacy. The conclusions are as follows. 1.Increase the number of pictures. Learning can be enhanced by showing sample pictures of various aesthetic principles. 2.Most students prefer authentic practice. It is helpful to combine theories and practice in the instructional design of visual literacy. 3.Use more peer evaluation activities to facilitate interaction. Students can realize the weakness of their assignments and examine their own cognition through others’ feedback. Suggestions for future studies are as follows. 1.Through continuous review and revision in the phases of design-based research, instructional materials can be polished to perfection. 2.Implementation time should be a whole semester to carry out a complete visual literacy course. 3.Integrate interviews in the evaluation phase to gain better understanding of the results gather from class observation and questionnaire. 4.Plan and develop suitable visual literacy materials for different subjects, topics or age groups.

Abstract:
The larger architectural context of cities must be understood in order to effectively design buildings. If a building ignores its surroundings, it will not hold up to time and will adversely affect the city in which it stands. This can be seen in multiple of disarrayed cities and their commercial-driven building inventory. So, what makes a good city stand out, and how can this be applied to buildings? There are the four basic principles designers and planners seemed to have forgotten. The first is the layout of basic city components and their influence on current and future identity. The second is the aesthetic principles of scale and proportion. Choosing appropriate material permanence to your location is also important because it enhances or subtracts from the city’s identity. And finally, the experience of the observer must be impactful. If these principles are applied correctly and harmoniously, they can effectively heal the conflicting issues of transportation, pedestrian access, social venues, historic reverence and much more. But most importantly, they can be applied to buildings. Buildings can individually initiate the healing of an urban fabric if they are cognizant to their surroundings. Therefore in this thesis, I want to apply these four basic principles in the rehabilitation of a malfunctioning junction in my hometown of Helena, Montana. By designing a singular building with a guiding master plan, I hope to stimulate a chain reaction. This transformation would take the current issues and interweave these principles into an effective solution that will not only revitalize the area but also become a tourist destination.

The bridge is a 3D structure built in a void space for the road to pass through. Its significant, unique architectural characteristics often make it an important landmark of a city or a region that deeply affects people’s visual and mental perception as a momentous aesthetic marker of the overall environment. Also serving as the representative of mankind’s technological and cultural achievements, the bridge is a type of architectural that is of great social and art values. As a result of the rise of the township appearance movement, planning of the overall environment begins to focus on enhancement of landscape quality, and aesthetics becomes one of the key factors that guide design considerations. Bridge design and construction in Taiwan have been directed by civil engineers. Most of them lack aesthetic training, and bridge aesthetics as a result has become a formidable design challenge. Meanwhile, architecture and landscape designers have not been equipped with the knowledge of the essence of bridges required for handling the characteristics of bridge design. Therefore, the architectural features of bridges and design-related aesthetic principles have become one of the primary issues that designers need to deal with before entering the realm of bridge design. The manipulation of this study is based on the “heuristic structure theory.” Through domain definition, it breaks down the problems, extracts key issues and reaches the conclusion via induction and deduction. The scope of the exploration encompasses architectural arts, structural design, landscape aesthetics, color principles, development of bridge structure aesthetics, as well as case collection and analysis. Based on outcomes of the research, eight landscape aesthetic principles pertaining to bridge structure design are identified: 1. Based on mechanical characteristics and meanings, each of the shapes and materials of structural components in bridge structure design should be specifically identified. 2. The shapes and materials of the bridge structure in essence should be simple and light. 3. Enhancing the linear characteristics of a bridge is one of the deign principles for highlighting the architectural features of the bridge. 4. The emotional elements of the scenery should be reflected in the shapes, materials and details of bridge design. 5. Based on the principle of authenticity and purity, bridge design transforms local images and enhances and intensifies the connotation of local cultures and spiritual images. 6. The color of a bridge should in principle reflect the original textures of the materials. 7. The use of colors should be in line with the mechanism of visual aesthetic senses and mental associations. 8. Lighting design should demonstrate details such as lines, material textures and joints. Finally, in accordance with current development of bridge design, three conclusions are presented: 1. The aesthetic trend in pursuit of genuine styles in the future. 2. Breakthroughs of the scale of bridges have become a spiritual awakening that is beyond simple configurative aesthetics. 3. Transformation of local images will be an important indicator of the bridge design ability in the future. And, three recommendations have been proposed for future reference: 1. Review and formulation of the bridge design process and framework. 2. Exploration of the aesthetic education and education mechanism for bridge designers. 3. Exploration of the aesthetic principles of the structure that significantly influences landscape quality. It is the author’s hope that the findings of this research can serve as effective reference for bridge design and contribute to enhancement of the aesthetic connotation of bridge design.

The area of information systems design has obviously turned to the direction of more and more focusing on humanity in recent years. Those designers of information systems hope to bring aesthetic appeals, which just happened to the relationship between human beings in the past, into the design of human and information systems interaction and try to give their users an experience with full of freshness and pleasure. Earlier HCI researchers often focused on the usability issues of an information system in terms of efficiency and functionality, and they usually neglected users’ experiences and emotions caused by the appreciation of the system appearance. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to explore the appeals and design issues of aesthetics in web pages. At first, we collected and analyzed several literatures related to the subjects of aesthetics, including varieties of concepts about aesthetics proposed by aestheticians, relations between aesthetics and human feelings, and general design principles of aesthetics, in order to propose possible research questions for further studies of aesthetic design of web pages. The results showed that we can classify the concepts of aesthetics presented in the literatures in three different aspects, including the concepts about experiences and feelings, the concepts about abilities and behaviors, and the concepts about needs and aims. The paper suggests that the aesthetics of expressions related to the users’ experience might be another important issue in information system design. This paper also proposes the ZMET with the features of capability to extract visual information and emotional factors as the research approach in the further exploration of aesthetics in web pages. The result of the study found out :(1) “attraction”, “contrast”, and “the sense of comfort” are the key concepts of the website which is beauty sense. (2)The relationship of the key concepts among these relevant concepts are including ”interesting”,” rhythm”, “vivid”, “abounding content”, “curiosity”, “ high quality”, “focal point”, attention”, “characteristic”, “margin”, “impressed”, “clear and intelligibility”, “simplcity”, light color”, “harmony”, “relaxation”, cuteness”, “dreamy”, and “the sense of sweet”.(3)We discussed the concepts about experiences and feelings, the concepts about abilities and behaviors, the concepts about needs and aims , and the general design principles of aesthetics separately , and in contrast to the consensus map, the finding is beauty sense not only objectivity but also sociality.(4) the activity of browsing website became the part of lifestyle of people gradually, therefore, a web pages design with beauty not only includes the principles of design, but also integrates the factors of sociality and culture to the web pages design.

We can investigate “Philosophy of changes” to see the spirit that the Chinese architecture implied, from space behavior, architectural language to overall space series connection. Softly, it reveals Chinese’s Truthfulness, Compassion, and Beauty. With the integration of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Beauty, creates nature from abstruse, even reveals “dao’s” aesthetic feeling. From philosophy’s point of view to see the architectural content, in order to review ancient architectural spirit and symbolism, responding to Chinese architectural essence and environmental ethics. Then probing philosophy of changes and overall Chinese architectural art─ philosophical problems about rigidity and flexible, ying and yang, technique, and structure. There are conjunctions between garden design and philosophy of changes. Chinese architectural aesthetics influenced by philosophy of changes. What is Chinese architecture? We use the structure’s main part as the study content, and by the following content to discover the beauty of Chinese architecture. Extending to the architecture and nature’s correspond and ethics, architectural view and architectural art that were symbiotic with nature;feng shui and environmental science. We are going to focus on how to coexistent with nature, the relationship between human and architecture, the connection between architecture and nature. The guiding principle that Philosophy of changes has formed, influenced how Chinese architecture integrated into nature, and integrally formed. Returning to architectural ethics and moral, we are going to study architectural quality and cultural tie. What’s more, the moral requests that philosophy of changes had toward participants, and the influence that architecture had on human nature. It can be resolved layer by layer, yet it goes on. Just like in a Chinese architecture, a monomer space can be seen as an independent space, but is also linked together with the overall space, forming an entirety. Being the same outside and inside is the subtlety of Chinese architecture. “Philosophy of changes” is truly the connotation of Chinese knowledge system, regardless of poems or musical composition, or even landscape architecture. Philosophy of changes removed, traditional Chinese aesthetics will be mere formality, even vague. As a result, works that intrinsic Philosophy of changes, without exception, bears an implicit of ethereal and marvelous spirit. This is the hinge of Chinese aesthetics.

Abstract The purposes of this study were to develop indicators and their weights for aesthetic leadership of elementary school principals that are practical to Taiwan’s current education situation in order to be a reference for aesthetic leadership for principals. To achieve the purpose, this study recruited 30 elementary school principals with practical experience as the research subjects. Based on literature review, the study first drafted indicators for aesthetic leadership of elementary school principals and then developed indicator contents by focus group of experts and questionnaire survey. Finally, the study adopt fuzzy weight questionnaire to survey the relative weights and applied fuzzy statistical analysis to establish the weight of each indicator’s content. The indicators for aesthetic leadership of elementary school principals and its weight system constructed by this research included 7 levels and 45 indicators. The sequence of importance in the 7 levels of aesthetic leadership were (1) aesthetic and harmonious communication (FRW=.152); (2) aesthetic support action (FRW=.148); (3) the approaching of aesthetic practice (FRW=.143); (4) aesthetic sincerity (FRW=.142); (5) the applications of aesthetic creation (FRW=.140); (6) aesthetic sensitivity (FRW=.139); and (7) the performance of aesthetic cultivation (FRW=.135). At last, according to the research results, the study proposed specific suggestions for elementary school principals, educational authorities and further studies.

Nowdays, there are a variety of products appearance and design. How to make the products stand out in the crowd? This research wants to offer some suggestion which is about the design’s complexity for companys. And hope to provide suggestion to make their products catch consumers’ eyes. This research has three experiments. Every experiment we use different factors to analyze the consumers preference toward the products designed in the aesthetic of middle principle or designed in normal. First experiment, no factors are applied at the very beginning to understand the effects of appearance on customer directly, then, we add Product Knowledge to analyze. Second experiment, we apply two factors such as product type and product involvement. In the third experiment, we add cognitive load to analyze. After that, we compare our results to researcher Gises’s to explore the difference between Taiwan and the western world. To conclude, when it doesn’t have any factor to affect the consumers, consumers will prefer the products which are designed in the aesthetic of middle principle. Adding a factor of Knowledge Product, consumers prefer product C (middle strength/high attractiveness) which is designed in the aesthetic of middle principle. It doesn’t affect consumers’ preference with products design when adding factors of Product Type and Product Involvement. Consumers prefer the products which are designed in the aesthetic of middle principle when adding a factor of Cognitive Load.

There are different types of design styles of stores everywhere, Hung (2009) indicated that the lifestyle of consumers have an impact on their personal preferences. In the aspects of the space, the design style may deliver proper, strong or simple feelings to consumers, and which kind of space style is preferred by customers is always the important issue for the store owner. This research discusses how design may influence customers’ preference based on the Principle of the Aesthetic Middle and also put lifestyle into discussion since it is one important factor that may influence peoples’ preference in every aspects. The research has been divided into two stages, in the first stage we offered questionnaire with eight different design styles of pictures to experts to rank them based on the degree of awareness of the attractiveness and strength they perceived. In the second stage, questionnaire based on the content of the previous ones were handed out online and 250 effective questionnaires were collected. Then, one-way ANOVA is applied to investigate the effect of the Aesthetic Middle toward the consumer preference. And using the Factor Analysis and Cluster Analysis to generalize the five clusters of the consumers, and using two-way ANOVA to investigate the effect of the principle of the aesthetic middle toward preference base on this five clusters’ lifestyles. The research result shows that the Aesthetic Middle has a significant impact on consumer preference, and the design style has a significant impact on preference. However, the lifestyle does not affect the overall the Aesthetic Middle and design style toward consumer preference. It has few significant impacts on some lifestyle clusters. In the analysis of demographic variables, the age and marriage state have a significant interactive effect on the Principle of the Aesthetic Middle, which indicate the age have the impact on the preference based on the Principle of the Aesthetic Middle. On the other hand, the results show that the consumers do not prefer the commercial space in the Aesthetic Middle category.

Nowadays, the products are more and more diversified, and the design of them goes the same way. How to attract consumers, attention at first glance amongst so many commodities, becomes a major problem when them. Simultaneously, in order to trigger the consumers’ buying behavior, in the marketing aspect, companies often use promotional methods, this research hopes to provide suggestions on product design and sales promotion. In addition, the consumers may also be affected by their own traits when purchase, therefore, we wish to understand the difference in product evaluation that consumers with different personality traits, in the face of virious stages of aesthetic products. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of product design on product evaluation, the interference is designed to be the promotion methods and focus adjustment, and product design is divided into four combinations using the aesthetic middle principle, which are labeled as A high-grade moderate-degree aesthetics, B moderate-degree aesthetics, C moderate-degree aesthetics, and D low-grade moderate-degree aesthetics (Giese, Malkewitz, and Henderson, 2014), and continues Dong Zhi-Ling’s research (2015), using the photos of two products of perfume and red wine from her research, and Dodds et al. (1991) proposed three aspects of perceived quality, perceived value and willingness to buy to measure product evaluation, in terms of personality traits, based on the regulatory focus theory of Higgins (1997), who divded person truits into promotion focus and prevention focus according to the motivation of individual pursuit of goals. The promotion method is divided into “price promotion” and “non-price promotion" (Campbell and Diamond, 1990), the price-promotion method is represented by “price discount”, and the “non-price promotion” is represented by “free gift”. A total of 865 questionnaires were distributed, 700 of which were valid questionnaires. 165 were invalid questionnaires, and the effective questionnaire recovery rate was 80.9%, and statistical analysis is done by SPSS. The study found that the product design of perfume has a significant impact on product evaluation, moderate-degree aesthetics has higher perceived value and willingness to buy than non-moderate aesthetics, in the form of promotion interference, product design have a significant impact on product evaluation, combination B with free-gift promotion has a higher product evaluation than discount sales, while combination C has no impact when the regulatory focus interference is implemented. The product design of red wine has a significant impact on product evaluation, and combination A has higher perceptual value than B and D, under the interference of promotion methods, the design has no significant effect on product evaluation, it neither has no significant effect under the interference of regulatory focus adjustment. The research shows that perfume products are more suitable with the design that adopts the aesthetic middle principle, and combination B moderate-degree aesthetics is suitable for free-gift promotion, and combination C is suitable for discount promotion, so companies can subdivide by the appearance, using the combination of the aesthetic middle principle, which refers to high perceived attractiveness and medium perceived strength to collocate free-gift promotion, and “medium perceived attractiveness and high perceived strength” to collocate with discount promotion, to increase the sales volume of the products. The red wine products in the study do not fit in with the aesthetic middle principle, but based on the appearance of a high-grade aesthetic wine, the companies can use the free-gift marketing technique to have higher sales volume.

Abstract:
Abstract The report investigates computer generated (CG) lighting techniques with a focus on the rendering of interior architectural visualisations. With rapid advancements in CG technology, the demand and expectation for greater photorealism in visualisations are increasing. The tools to achieve this are widely available and fairly easy to apply; however, renderings on a local scale are still displaying functionality and lack visual appeal. The research discusses how design principles and aesthetics can be used effectively to create visual interest and display mood in the visualisation, with strong attention to the elements that are defined as the fundamentals in achieving photorealism. The focus is on a solid understanding of CG lighting techniques and principles in order to achieve high quality, dynamic visualisations. Case studies examine the work of lighting artist James Turrell and 3D artist Jose Pedro Costa and apply the findings to a creative project, encompassing the discussions in the report. The result is the completion of three photorealistic renderings of an interior visualisation, using different CG lighting techniques to convey mood. The research provides a platform for specialisation in the 3D environment and encourages a multidisciplinary approach to learning.

Thirion-Venter, Elizabeth Magdalena. "Embracing Eastern and Western principles : towards an intercultural office design framework." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/8040.

Abstract:
An employed individual will spend between a quarter and a third of his or her waking life at the workplace. An estimated 40% of those in South Africa who are employed full-time work in offices. With the amount of time spend in buildings, the physical conditions in the workplace are important determinants of satisfaction, comfort, well-being, and effectiveness and can even play a role in mental health. The physical environment in offices should therefore be carefully planned, designed, and managed. This qualitative study, sought to develop an inter-cultural office design framework for South Africa combining Eastern and Western design principles. Specifically, it sought to obtain a better insight into design principles which can enhance the well-being of office workers; inter-cultural, gender neutral and age neutral design principles which can be applied in a South African context. To be able to answer these questions an intensive literature review was undertaken investigating both the Eastern design principles as expressed in feng shui and Western design principles as expressed in Environmental Social Science. The design principles of these two traditions were compared and all aspects where the two traditions did not support each other were included in the in-depth interviews. Twenty-five in-depth interviews were conducted By relying on various design cultures (e.g. Eastern and Western) an environment can be created which are pleasing and can enhance the well-being of the users. Underlying design principles are universal, but the symbolic expression thereof can differ from culture to culture. One of the conclusions from this study is that three quarters of design principles are v universal. There is no one size fits all solution and compromise is necessary from all involved. The compromise applies to the roughly a quarter of design aspects where subgroup differences have been detected. Any design should take individual and group difference into account. The only way to do this is to get proper input from all stakeholders at all stages of the design. It is critically important that the input starts before the design process commences. There are many design principles which can be implemented to improve the quality of work life of office workers in the South African context. Design can for example play a very important role in encouraging and facilitating formal and informal interaction in the workplace – bridging the gap between heterogeneous groups. Without forcing relationships, design can assist in naturally integrating heterogeneous groups. The physical environment must support the image and identity which needs to be communicated, facilitate communication and enable task accomplishment. Most of all it must become a place with which employees can identify and where they can develop a sense of place. From this study it can be concluded that not only form follows function but also that aesthetics follow function – a principle that design should be based on the primary purpose of the building, the workspace based on the needs of the stakeholders and from this starting point aesthetics will flow.
