Abstract:
This study has primary focus to analyze the aesthetic layout of a newspaper with a mathematical approach, which refers to some methods of Birkhoff’s aesthetic measurement developed by David Ngo Chek Ling, et.al. Ngo developed a method of measuring the aesthetic layout that can be used for various design purposes, especially for a computer interface design. Measurement method that he developed refers to the principles of design aesthetics, such as: the principle of balance, the principle of sequence, the principle of unity, and the principle of equilibrium. Birkhoff aesthetic measurement method was used as final analysis to determine the value of aesthetic layout. In this study, some national and local media were selected as samples to determine and assess the aesthetic layout. Based on data analysis, Birkhoff aesthetic measurement method can be applied to measure the aesthetic value of the newspaper layout mathematically.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have investigated the relationship between a product’s degree of usability and its degree of beauty. Both directions of causality have been demonstrated leading to “what is beautiful is usable” and “what is usable is beautiful hypothesis. Additionally, aesthetic research has demonstrated several principles that elicit a consistent pattern of responses. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between aesthetics and usability by means of a functional prime. Forty participants rated sixteen stimuli manipulated on four aesthetic principles; prototypicality, symmetry, composition, and shape. Mixed results indicate that certain aesthetic principles interact with one another in a functional usage.

Abstract:
Using the generative processes developed over two stages of creative development and the performance of The Physics Project at the Loft at the Creative Industries Precinct at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) from 5th – 8th April 2006 as a case study, this exegesis considers how the principles of contemporary physics can be reframed as aesthetic principles in the creation of contemporary performance. The Physics Project is an original performance work that melds live performance, video and web-casting and overlaps an exploration of personal identity with the physics of space, time, light and complementarity. It considers the acts of translation between the language of physics and the language of contemporary performance that occur via process and form. This exegesis also examines the devices in contemporary performance making and contemporary performance that extend the reach of the performance, including the integration of the live and the mediated and the use of metanarratives.

Abstract:
This study problematizes the criticism Oscar Wilde received for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and aims to explore the aesthetic style he employed when writing the novel. The theoretical approach used in this essay is based on the perspectives of New Historicism; Wilde’s life and how people reasoned during his lifetime are brought into focus and different influences on his work are examined, especially evidence of biographical aspects as well as aesthetic elements in the novel. Wilde himself refuted that he had written an immoral story, insisting that morality was not part of Aestheticism. He also made an effort to clarify his aesthetic objectives in later editions by removing some ambiguous sentences and adding a preface.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to establish a practical way for architectural designers to take advantage of the relationship between soundscape and architectural aesthetics. The whole study aides in providing a structural framework by which architectural designers could incorporate acoustic elements into their design, with aesthetic concerns rather than for practical purpose. The discussions of soundscape and architecture forms are organized in the order of point, line, plane and space to present my personal observations on the issue. Three graphic systems are developed based on the previous researches of soundscape to visualize the coexistence of sonic identities and visual identities in built environment and how both of them interact to create a multi-sensory experience for visitors. Among the three systems, the Soundscape Map system is particularly introduced to demonstrate some case studies where soundscape elements are successfully employed to strengthen the construction of architectural spaces and forms. The goal of this research is to open a door for architectural researchers to discover the interconnection between soundscape and architecture, with the hope that the graphic systems introduced could be useful for effective designs with soundscape concerns in built environment.

Dong, Ren Wen. "The application of traditional Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/344358.

Abstract:
The Application of Traditional Chinese Aesthetic Principles to Contemporary International Design. This is a submission by publication consisting of 13 major design projects and an accompanying research report. China is undergoing phenomenal economic growth that is having a major impact on the social and cultural development of the Republic. Accompanying the growth is an unprecedented urbanisation of the population and expansion of the cities. This has meant an explosion in the building industries. At the same time China is moving towards the central position in the global economy that also has huge cultural implications. This is the context in which I have pursued my professional practice as an interior and architectural designer. Some of the questions I have been attempting to address through my practice arise directly out of this context. In the fast expansion of the field of interior design that has accompanied this growth it is vital that Chinese designers are aware of the cultural context of their work. Is it possible for Chinese designers working in the developing international context of contemporary design projects in China to make a unique contribution to the field that is specifically Chinese? This presentation of my practice will provide a cohesive argument for an approach to design in the international arena that remains specific to the cultural and temporal context of its origins. I will specifically demonstrate solutions I have found to the application of ancient Chinese aesthetic principles to contemporary international design problems. As practice-based research I have given much thought to the methodologies I have employed. I will provide a detailed outline of these 'action' research methodologies and definitions of the types of knowledge employed in the following report. The visual evidence is also accompanied by descriptions of the projects including the briefs, design solutions and specific Chinese characteristics. The presentation of my practice in this form provides evidence of the ways in which cultural specificity can be maintained within the international design arena and makes a meaningful contribution to debates and knowledge in the area of cultural diversity and design.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasal skin cancer, its location by facial aesthetic subunits and the type of reconstructive procedures performed for each nasal subunit after excision for nasal skin tumors. Observational cross-sectional study of all consecutive patients with the diagnosis of skin tumor located in the nasal unit, treated from 2018 to 2019 by the department of head and neck surgery of a general hospital. 60 patients were treated with nasal skin tumors excisions. A total of 52 patients (86,6%) had basal cell skin cancer, 7 (11,6%) had squamous cell skin cancer and 1 (1,6%) had melanoma. Fifty-nine patients (98.33%) presented a primary tumor and just 1 case (1,66%) recived a previous surgical treatment. Regardless of the type of tumor, the tip subunit was the most often involved with 29 (48,33%) cases in total. Despite of the nasal aesthetic subunit affected, the most frequent type of procedure used for reconstruction was the rotation or advancement flap, based on aesthetic nasal subunits, which was performed in 39 cases (65%). Nasal reconstruction after skin cancer can be very complex, especially since all patients have high expectations about the results. In order to achieve good results, there is a necessity for careful analysis of the defect, correct planning and excellent technical execution of the procedures Frequently, staged procedures will be needed to achieve an optimal result.

Hancock, Darryl J. "Improving the Environment in Distance Learning Courses Through the Application of Aesthetic Principles." Scholar Commons, 2004. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1065.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary goal of this project has been to research and create aesthetic visual environments in distance-learning media through the application of expert criteria and to explore the effects of those environments on student satisfaction and motivation. To accomplish this three instructors with distinct courses were selected to apply aesthetic criteria within the process of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Courses selected were Art Appreciation -- ARTS 1100, Advanced Surveying -- ENGR 2502, and Introduction to Sociology -- SOCI 1101. The project goal was subdivided into four objectives. 1) Develop criteria for the inclusion of visual aesthetics in the online environment. 2) Design and develop online courses using guidelines for the inclusion of aesthetics. 3) Collect and compare data from students about the level of satisfaction with the aesthetic appearance of the online environment. 4) Explore the effect of an aesthetic environment on student motivation. This project has demonstrated the environments of distance learning courses can be improved through the application of aesthetic principles. The selected criteria were useful to this Instructional Designer and could prove successful in improving the appearance of other online courses.

Tucker, Benjamin Scott. "Atonality, modality, and incantation in two works for trumpet by André Jolivet, with a discussion of his technical and aesthetic principles." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186692.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents the most salient features of Jolivet's mature musical style as exemplified in two of his major solo works for trumpet. The two works which serve as the musical focus of the document are one of his latest works, Arioso Barocco (1968) for trumpet and organ, and a work situated near the center of his compositional output, the Second Concerto (1954) for trumpet and a thirteen-member chamber ensemble. Following an exposition of Jolivet's life and musical development, we begin by examining five technical principles of harmony, texture, melody, and rhythm, which Jolivet set forth in a 1946 article. His aesthetic principles as stated in this and other articles by the composer are also examined. The most important of these aesthetic principles holds that music is by nature incantatory or has an incantatory mission--that is, it has the power to connect man with the cosmos, eternity, or that which is greater than man himself. At the heart of this incantatory aesthetic ideal is Jolivet's belief in the primacy of expressive melody, free of the harmonic restraints of traditional tonality. The musical analysis proceeds by identifying in Arioso Barocco the specific application of Jolivet's technical and aesthetic principles to the music, as well as considering formal structure and thematic process. The Second Concerto is then examined in the same way, and a stylistic and technical comparison is drawn between the two works. The study concludes that while both works serve the same underlying atonal and incantatory musical aesthetic, they are markedly different in many significant technical characteristics and stylistic traits. In view of the fact that both works come from what is considered Jolivet's third and final creative period, these findings give cause for further research into Jolivet's compositions from this period to determine whether they do in fact constitute one creative period or two separate and distinct periods.

Gourova, Maria Andreevna. "The Aesthetic Idea and the Unity of Cognitive Faculties in Kant's Aesthetics." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/41.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, I will try to answer the question how the aesthetic idea in Kant’s aesthetic theory accounts for the universal validity of the subjective judgment of taste, and what the nature of the aesthetic idea is that makes such account possible. This claim about universal validity of the subjective judgment of taste in Kant’s philosophy is regarded to be problematic because of the seeming contradiction between the subjectivity of a judgment and its universality. What can solve this contradiction, from my point of view, is the role of the aesthetic idea that it plays in the judgment of taste and the subjective principle that puts cognitive powers of mind in a harmonious free relationship. The main feature that makes the aesthetic idea the source of the universal validity is its universal communicability expressed in the universally pleasurable feeling of the judgment of taste.

Abstract:
Birkhoff proposed that order divided by complexity is a formula for aesthetic measurement. In that context, this work proposes to measure order with a method to quantify Gestalt principles. These principles establish how humans visually group elements of a shape together, and they have been used in architecture, product design and art as guidelines for good design. A human subject study was conducted to test the hypothesis that if complexity is held constant, Gestalt can serve as a direct measurement of aesthetics. In a survey, subjects were asked to evaluate their preference for multiple individual 2-D representations of automotive wheel rims from a variety of styles. The wheel rims within each style were designed in pairs, one pair with lower and one pair with higher Gestalt. Complexity was held constant by only comparing subject ratings within wheel rim styles. The results show that a positive change in Gestalt has a positive effect on aesthetic subject preference and that preferences are not significantly different for designs differing in geometry but having the same Gestalt. The implications of these results for designers and for future work are discussed.

Abstract:
The aesthetic aspect of product packaging is a well-known factor in attracting consumers’ attention. One of the most common ways in achieving the aesthetic appearance of the packaging is applying graphic design principles. The purpose of the study was to explore how people perceive the attractiveness of tea packaging with different levels of graphic design principles applied. The graphic design principles applied on the packaging were: contrast, dominance, alignment, symmetry, consistency and colour harmony. The manipulation of these principles resulted in three different packaging samples that were tested: aesthetic packaging, partially-aesthetic packaging and non-aesthetic packaging. The participants’ tasks were to rate the attractiveness of each of the packaging samples and to select the one which they would like to buy. The statistical analysis showed that the results of both tests (rating and choice task) were consistent, indicating that the aesthetic packaging was appreciated the most, followed by the partially-aesthetic packaging and the non-aesthetic packaging. These results were the same even when taking into account whether the beauty of the packaging was important to the participants or not. The findings support the idea of using graphic design principles in packaging design whenever applicable.

Abstract:
This work introduces a methodology to quantify the form of a three-dimensional (3D) product representation using the Gestalt principles of symmetry, parallelism, and continuity, and how they can be used as descriptive parameters in product design. First, consistent quantifications of these three Gestalt principles for parametrized 3D representations in a zero-one scale are presented. Then, a generalized methodology applicable to any product form is discussed. It starts with the identification of important aesthetic forms of the product shape and the Gestalt principles that best related to those forms, and ends with the quantification of these Gestalt principles of a 3D product representation. The expressions to quantify the Gestalt principles in question are validated through an online survey in which subjects indicated how much they recognize symmetry, parallelism, or continuity from irregular shapes. Finally, random-effects ordered logit regression is used to determine if the expressions effectively describe the level of recognition of each Gestalt principle. Results show that the proposed quantifications for symmetry, parallelism, and continuity are congruent with subjects perception of these Gestalt principles, and the implications for designers and future work are discussed. Further implications in the design process of these quantifications include the optimization of the product shape for aesthetic, semantic, and functional goals.

Abstract:
<p>Relations between structural form as well as service function of bridges and their aesthetics are analysed. Irrespective of their scale bridges always affect their surroundings or landscape. Therefore, they not only have an engineering and economic meaning but also a social and a cultural one. In some cases, especially older bridges have an additional symbolic or a historic meaning. Contemporary trends concerning bridge aesthetics are discussed. Commonly modern bridge structures ideas are controversial – their forms often seem to be more important than their service function and classical aesthetic principles are rather rarely observed. Presented problems are exemplified by bridge structures in Poland and in other countries. Conclusions concerning the relations between the bridge aesthetics and bridge function are formulated. Some remarks on the future trends in the bridge engineering are also presented.</p>

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to develop a system for evaluating product shape, from the viewpoint of aesthetics and packaging. In the previous work, we developed a robust design method to generate a product image based on customers’ feelings, and we quantitatively evaluated the shape based on the principles of the Taguchi method. The underlying idea is that an attractive product with an aesthetically pleasing shape should enable efficient packaging. In this paper, we analyze the packaging efficiency of three different cross-section shapes (circle, square and rectangle) of an aesthetic PET bottle. The packaging efficiency is evaluated based on comparing the space required to contain bottles with the space available in the packaging box. The paper uses the assumption that the space required to contain bottles depends on the space to contain one bottle, and the space to contain one bottle depends on the largest cross-section of the bottle body. The system can give designers suggestions about the packaging efficiency of the designed model.

Abstract:
<p>Urban highway viaduct plays an indispensable role in reducing the pressure of the urban traffic. The configuration design of the pier is very necessary which need to meet both the structural safety and aesthetic logic, especially in rapidly developing economies. Some valid principles of the pier configuration design were summarized. Based on the characteristics of urban highway viaduct pier, the reasons why the piers aesthetic design is more difficult was analysed and some methods for the configuration design was given. Based on a bridge project that is located in Chengdu, China, three configuration design schemes of piers were analysed and compared from different aspects, which reflect some emphases of the pier configuration design. The configuration design of urban viaduct pier is significant to increasing aesthetic perception and shaping the urban culture, and should be adopted by the designer</p>
