Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to study the AdS/CFT correspondence and the AdS2/SYK connection as a very special example of the duality. While the first part of the thesis contains a review of AdS/CFT correspondence in arbitrary dimensions, the later parts focus on an interesting and speculative connection between the gravitational physics in two dimensional nearly AdS2 spacetime and one dimensional SYK model. More specifically, the connection is realized in terms of certain features of the SYK model in strong coupling limit, which resembles those of nearly AdS2 Jackiw-Teitelboim theory.

This thesis is focused on assessing the impact of retrofitting dielectric All Dielectric Self-Supporting Cable (ADSS) to existing MV overhead line. This type of optical cable is a means of future strengthening of the communication infrastructure of the distribution network. However, its mechanical properties are significantly different from the properties ACSR cable, due to which its installation can be problematic in terms of meeting the requirements of the PNE 33 3301 standard. In practical part, this work deals with the design of the ADSS installation on the existing MV line and the determination of its impact based on the assessment of the results of this design.

A novel pipeline is presented for unsupervised trajectory prediction. As part of this research, numerous techniques are investigated for trajectory prediction of dynamic obstacles from an egocentric perspective (driver’s per- spective). The algorithm takes images from a calibrated stereo camera as input or data from a laser scanner and outputs a heat map that describes all possible future locations of that specific 3D object for the next few frames. This research has many applications, most notably for autonomous cars as it allows them to make better driving decisions if they are able to anticipate where another moving object is going to be in the future.

Li, Ting. "Performance Enhancement of Pipeline ADCs." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2014. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27511.

Full text
Abstract:
The pipeline ADC is mainstream architecture in wireless communication and digital consumer products because of its speed, resolution, dynamic performance, and power consumption. However, there are three areas of concern with the pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC): power consumption, accuracy, and convergence speed of the digital calibration. The traditional pipeline ADC includes a dedicated front-end sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA), which consumes a significant amount of power. This research presents a novel configuration of the front-end stage with a sample-and-hold function for a SHA-less architecture. In addition, the multi-bit front-end has multiple benefits. Interestingly, if one additional bit is resolved in the front-end stage, then the comparator offset correction ability of this stage is reduced by half. To address this problem, this research presents a novel domain-extended digital error correction algorithm to increase the comparator offset correction ability. In order to improve accuracy, a combination of techniques are used: communicated feedback-capacitor switching (CFCS), gain boost amplifiers, and low noise dynamic comparators. Here, the ADC uses the above mentioned techniques and is fabricated with AMIS 0.5 ?m CMOS. The ADC, with an active area of 4.5 mm (superscript 2), consumes 264 mW when a 32 MHz input is at 75-MS/s sample rate. The third area of concern is convergence time, which determines the quality of the digital calibration. The high resolution ADC can be achieved without calibration. Therefore, in order for a digital calibration to be useful, it should minimize the analog circuits and have a reasonable convergence time. The reduced accuracy due to minimized analog circuits can be complemented by the digital calibration. Therefore, the convergence time determines the quality of the digital calibration. In this research a new domain-extended dither-based algorithm increases the convergence speed. Moreover, the novel variable-amplitude domain-extended dither-based algorithm further increases the convergence speed. Matlab simulations illustrate these improvements.

Abstract:
Today's complex electronic systems with billions of transistors on a single die are enabled by the aggressive scaling down of the device feature size at an exponential rate as predicted by the Moore's law. Digital circuits benefit from technology scaling to become faster, more energy efficient as well as more area efficient as the feature size is scaled down. Moreover, digital design also benefits from mature CAD tools that simplify the design and cross-technology porting of complex systems, leveraging on a cell-based design methodology. On the other hand, the design of analog circuits is getting increasingly difficult as the feature size scales down into the deep nanometer regime due to a variety of reasons like shrinking voltage headroom, reducing intrinsic gain of the devices, increasing noise coupling between circuit nodes due to shorter distances etc. Furthermore, analog circuits are still largely designed with a full custom design ow that makes their design and porting tedious, slow, and expensive. In this context, it is attractive to consider realizing analog/mixed-signal circuits using standard digital components. This leads to scaling-friendly mixed-signal blocks that can be designed and ported using the existing CAD framework available for digital design. The concept is already being applied to mixed-signal components like frequency synthesizers where all-digital architectures are synthesized using standard cells as basic components. This can be extended to other mixed-signal blocks like digital-to-analog and analog to- digital converters as well, where the latter is of particular interest in this thesis. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO)-based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an attractive architecture to achieve all-digital analog-to digital conversion due to favorable properties like shaping of the quantization error, inherent anti-alias filtering etc. Here a VCO operates as a signal integrator as well as a quantizer. A converter employing a ring oscillator as the VCO lends itself to an all-digital implementation. In this dissertation, we explore the design of VCO-based ADCs synthesized using digital standard cells with the long-term goal of achieving high performance data converters built from low accuracy switch components. In a first step, an ADC is designed using vendor supplied standard cells and fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS process. The converter delivers an 8-bit ENOB over a 25 MHz bandwidth while consuming 3.3 mW of power resulting in an energy efficiency of 235 fJ/step (Walden FoM). Then we utilize standard digital CAD tools to synthesize converter designs that are fully described using a hardware description language. A polynomial-based digital post-processing scheme is proposed to correct for the VCO nonlinearity. In addition, pulse modulation schemes like delta modulation and asynchronous sigma-delta modulation are used as a signal pre-coding scheme, in an attempt to reduce the impact of VCO nonlinearity on converter performance. In order to investigate the scaling benefits of all-digital data conversion, a VCO-based converter is designed in a 28 nm CMOS process. The design delivers a 13.4-bit ENOB over a 5 MHz bandwidth achieving an energy efficiency of 4.3 fJ/step according to post-synthesis schematic simulation, indicating that such converters have the potential of achieving good performance in deeply scaled processes by exploiting scaling benefits. Furthermore, large conversion errors caused by non-ideal sampling of the oscillator phase are studied. An encoding scheme employing ones counters is proposed to code the sampled ring oscillator output into a number, which is resilient to a class of sampling induced errors modeled by temporal reordering of the transitions in the ring. The proposed encoding reduces the largest error caused by random reordering of up to six subsequent bits in the sampled signal from 31 to 2 LSBs. Finally, the impact of process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations on the performance while operating the converter from a subthreshold supply is investigated. PVT-adaptive solutions are suggested as a means to achieve energy-efficient operation over a wide range of PVT conditions.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis deals with high data rate communications over power lines (Power Line Communications). We propose to adapt a multi-carrier modulation DMT (Discrete Multi-Tone) to the power line channel after having introduced its characteristics. The estimation of the channel frequency response, required for the frequency equalisation as well as bit allocation, is performed using pilot sub-carrier in comb pattern combined with interpolation techniques. We show that a comparison of the different techniques – according to the minimal value of the mean square error – could be based on an original separation of the estimation error. This analysis points out the impact of the pilot signal to noise ratio on the comparison result. In order to optimise the interpolation techniques – according to the minimal value of the bit error rate – avoiding to perform numerous time consuming simulations, we have established a performance indicator – for non-perfect frequency equalisation- close to the MSE and easy to compute. Applied to the power line channel, it becomes a criterion for the optimisation of the power pilot distribution. Results are validated by simulations

Abstract:
Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) are subcritical hybrid systems in which charged particles produced by an accelerator are used to induce spallation reactions in some target material, resulting in the production of neutrons that are used in a subcritical reactor core to maintain the fission chain. These systems have been studied for transmutation of nuclear waste and for thorium regeneration. However, there is a difficulty in the use of thorium in ADS , which is the need to adding some fissile isotope (233U ou 235U) to reach the criticality necessary. This addition of fissile isotopes of uranium is not a good option due to its technological difficulties and waste generation inherent in every enrichment process. The addition of 233U is even more problematic, since this isotope needs to be generated from 232Th. One option for the use of thorium without the addition of 233U consists in using thorium with nuclear waste from conventional reactors. In this context, the aim of this work is to establish a fuel configuration which simultaneously turns possible the thorium regeneration and the incineration of spent fuel. In order to simulate the neutronic aspects of the studied fuels, the computational codes MCNPX 2.6.0 (MCNPX/CINDER) and Monteburns 2.0 (MCNP5/ORIGEN 2.1) were used. The results indicate a possible configuration of ADS fuel that allows regeneration of thorium and incinerating radioactive waste.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis was to create a model of forward error correction (FEC) system used in ADSL modem, which will be able to check its individual settings using the test methods specified in Recommendation G.996.1. The work is divided into two basic parts – theoretical and practical. The first part describes the basic functional characteristics of ADSL system, with attention being paid to aspects affecting the activity and setting of the error protection system. There are also discussed the theoretical basics of FEC coding techniques used in ADSL. The work also contains a description of the method for testing DSL system resistance against impulsive interference, which is specified in Recommendation G.996.1. The practical part of this thesis contains a description of the proposed model of the FEC system. The model was implemented in the programming environment Matlab Simulink. The proposed model includes the simulation of FEC coding process, DMT modulation and transmission channel with the impulse interference and the background noise. The proposed program is able to calculate parameters for setting FEC system from the specified data transfer rates and the requirement for interleaving. In addition, allows you to set the parameters of transmission line and sources of impulse interference and of the background noise. Under the set of input characteristics of the transmission is calculated bit allocation and the resulting parameters are given to a computational core of the model. In the application can be performed two types of test tasks. The first one is based on the Recommendation G.996.1 and makes it possible to determine probability of errored second. The second test task is for the measurement of resistance of the transmission system against impulsive interference. The results of the simulations are summarized in the conclusion of work.

Abstract:
Time-Interleaved Analog to Digital Converters (TI ADC) consist of several individual sub-converters operating at a lower sampling rate, working in parallel, and in a circular loop. Thereby, they are increasing the sampling rate without compromising on the resolution during conversion, at high sampling rates. The latter is the main requirement in the area of radio frequency sampling. However, they suffer from mismatches caused by the different characteristics in each sub-converter and the TI structure. The output of the TI ADC under consideration contains a lot of harmonics and spurious tones due to the non-linearities mismatch between the sub-converters. Therefore, previously extensive frequency planning was performed to avoid the input signal from coinciding with these harmonic bins. More importance has been given to digital calibration in recent years where algorithms are developed and implemented outside ADC in a Digital signal processor (DSP), whereas the compensation is done in real time. In this work, we model the distortions and the harmonics present in the TI ADC output to get a clear understanding of the TI ADC. A post-correction block is developed for the cancellation of the characterized harmonics. The suggested method is tested on the TI ADCs working at radio frequencies, but is valid also for other types of ADCs, such as pipeline ADCs and sigma-delta ADCs.

Abstract:
An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a key component in many electronic systems. It is used to convert analog signals to the equivalent digital form. The conversion involves sampling which is the process of converting a continuous-time signal to a sequence of discrete-time samples, and quantization in which each sampled value is represented using a finite number of bits. The sampling rate and the effective resolution (number of bits) are two key ADC performance metrics. Today, ADCs form a major bottleneck in many applications like communication systems since it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high sampling rate and high resolution. Among the various ADC architectures, the time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TI-ADC) has emerged as a popular choice for achieving very high sampling rates and resolutions. At the principle level, by interleaving the outputs of M identical channel ADCs, a TI-ADC could achieve the same resolution as that of a channel ADC but with M times higher bandwidth. However, in practice, mismatches between the channel ADCs result in a nonuniformly sampled signal at the output of a TI-ADC which reduces the achievable resolution. Often, in TIADC implementations, digital reconstructors are used to recover the uniform-grid samples from the nonuniformly sampled signal at the output of the TI-ADC. Since such reconstructors operate at the TI-ADC output rate, reducing the number of computations required per corrected output sample helps to reduce the power consumed by the TI-ADC. Also, as the mismatch parameters change occasionally, the reconstructor should support online reconfiguration with minimal or no redesign. Further, it is advantageous to have reconstruction schemes that require fewer coefficient updates during reconfiguration. In this thesis, we focus on reducing the design and implementation complexities of nonrecursive finite-length impulse response (FIR) reconstructors. We propose efficient reconstruction schemes for three classes of nonuniformly sampled signals that can occur at the output of TI-ADCs. Firstly, we consider a class of nonuniformly sampled signals that occur as a result of static timing mismatch errors or due to channel mismatches in TI-ADCs. For this type of nonuniformly sampled signals, we propose three reconstructors which utilize a two-rate approach to derive the corresponding single-rate structure. The two-rate based reconstructors move part of the complexity to a symmetric filter and also simplifies the reconstruction problem. The complexity reduction stems from the fact that half of the impulse response coefficients of the symmetric filter are equal to zero and that, compared to the original reconstruction problem, the simplified problem requires only a simpler reconstructor. Next, we consider the class of nonuniformly sampled signals that occur when a TI-ADC is used for sub-Nyquist cyclic nonuniform sampling (CNUS) of sparse multi-band signals. Sub-Nyquist sampling utilizes the sparsities in the analog signal to sample the signal at a lower rate. However, the reduced sampling rate comes at the cost of additional digital signal processing that is needed to reconstruct the uniform-grid sequence from the sub-Nyquist sampled sequence obtained via CNUS. The existing reconstruction scheme is computationally intensive and time consuming and offsets the gains obtained from the reduced sampling rate. Also, in applications where the band locations of the sparse multi-band signal can change from time to time, the reconstructor should support online reconfigurability. Here, we propose a reconstruction scheme that reduces the computational complexity of the reconstructor and at the same time, simplifies the online reconfigurability of the reconstructor. Finally, we consider a class of nonuniformly sampled signals which occur at the output of TI-ADCs that use some of the input sampling instants for sampling a known calibration signal. The samples corresponding to the calibration signal are used for estimating the channel mismatch parameters. In such TI-ADCs, nonuniform sampling is due to the mismatches between the channel ADCs and due to the missing input samples corresponding to the sampling instants reserved for the calibration signal. We propose three reconstruction schemes for such nonuniformly sampled signals and show using design examples that, compared to a previous solution, the proposed schemes require substantially lower computational complexity.

The integration of photonic and electronic components to realize a photonic sigma delta ADC is considered in this thesis. The integration process was broken up into steps. First, the performance of a pair of dual-port Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) modulating a train of narrow high-speed laser pulses from a mode-locked laser was investigated. Various parameters like the half-wave voltage (V) and insertion loss were verified. Next, the ability of the MZIs to modulate the laser pulses, including the subtraction of two RF signals going into the two RF ports, was investigated. After that, the performance of a high-speed comparator circuit was evaluated. The comparator circuit was implemented using high-speed analog components capable of supporting data rates of up to 50 Gbps. The comparator components have to be tested individually and then integrated to ensure that they are able to amplitude analyze the modulated laser pulses using their respective matching threshold values. Lastly, the performance of the ring resonator, which was fabricated by the University of California Santa Barbara, was investigated. The ring resonator functions as an accumulator in the photonic ADC. In addition, a MATLAB simulation designed previously was used to simulate the behavior of the photonic sigma delta ADC. It was modified to speed up the simulation time and incorporate actual hardware parameters, including the time and amplitude jitter of the mode-locked laser. These laser parameters were characterized using a high-speed sampling oscilloscope. Thus, it was possible to predict the performance of the ADC under adverse effects as well as to show how the various electrical and optical signals appear at different parts of the circuit, which greatly adds to the efficiency of the integration process.

This thesis investigates peak-to-average ratio (PAR) reduction techniques for multicarrier modulation systems, such as discrete multitone (DMT) modems and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) terrestrial broadcast transmitters. Through simulation and test implementation on a state-of-the-art programmable ADSL development platform, this thesis pursues a suitable solution for minimizing PAR given the resources of a programmable platform. This solution is integrated as a prototype implementation into a fully-functional ADSL modem and optimized for maximum PAR reduction performance within modem complexity constraints.

Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are essential building blocks in many electronic systems which require digital signal processing and storage of analog signals. Traditionally, ADCs are considered a power hungry circuit. This thesis investigates ADC design techniques to achieve high-performance with low power consumption. Two designs are demonstrated. The first design is a voltage scalable zero-crossing based pipelined ADC. The zero-crossing based circuit technique is modified and optimized to improve the limited ADC resolution in nano-scaled CMOS technology. The proposed unidirectional charge transfer scheme allows faster and more energy efficient operation by eliminating unnecessary charging and discharging of the capacitors. Furthermore, the reduced transient disturbance at the beginning of the fine charge transfer phase improves the accuracy of operation. Power supply scaling enhances power efficiency at low sampling rates much like in digital circuits and widens the conversion frequency range where the ADC operates with highest efficiency. The second design is a high speed time-interleaved (TI) SAR ADC with background timing-skew calibration. A time-interleaved structure is employed to improve the effective sampling rate without sacrificing energy efficiency. SAR ADCs are used for each channel to make good use of device scaling. The proposed ADC architecture incorporates a flash ADC operating at the full sampling rate of the TI ADC. The flash ADC output is multiplexed to resolve MSBs of the SAR channels. Because the full-speed flash ADC does not suffer from timing-skew errors, the flash ADC output is also used as the timing reference to estimate the timing-skew of the SAR ADCs.

Abstract:
In this thesis we develop techniques of integrability in the study of dualities between two-dimensional conformal field theories and theories of closed strings on three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter background geometries. For several years after integrability was first applied to the 3d/2d dualities, it was an unanswered question how to incorporate the so-called \massless modes" of these theories into the integrability machinery. Here we tackle this problem in several contexts. We show that in the classical integrable description of closed strings the implementation of the string Virasoro constraints needs to be modified for geometries with multiple factors where massless modes are present. We show further that with the correct implementation of the Virasoro constraints, massless modes can be included in integrability techniques for obtaining quantum corrections to physical quantities such as the energies of string solutions. Lastly, we consider the scattering of fundamental string excitations and derive all-loop expressions for the scattering matrix that includes both massless and massive excitations.

Looking closer, we can notice that a coherence, indeed even a mode of social life exist. These can be very simple, like making appointement every day, in the same place, at the same time, but they can also be much more subtle and studied. We shall sometimes watch rules for a communal life, a specific langage, a fashion ideals, economical exanges, which will preside over the relations between the young people. Seeing that, for me, as a social educator, the bet will have been, during ten years, to infiltrate into these groups, to be acting from inside. The thesis i am upholding for this doctorate aims at relating these ten years of work ; it is a testimony

Abstract:
A&barbelow;symmetric d&barbelow;igital s&barbelow;ubscriber l&barbelow;ine (ADSL) technology provides transport of high-bit-rate digital information over digital subscriber lines (i.e., common telephone lines), which were initially engineered to carry a single voice signal with a 3.4 kHz bandwidth. Sophisticated digital transmission techniques have to be utilized to overcome digital subscriber line transmission impairments due to the high signal attenuation, i&barbelow;nter-s&barbelow;ymbol i&barbelow;nterference (ISI), c&barbelow;rosst&barbelow;alk noise (XT) from the signals present on adjacent wires, signal reflections, radio-frequency noise, and impulse noise. In current ADSL standard, a multicazrier modulation technique named d&barbelow;iscrete m&barbelow;ultit&barbelow;one (DMT) is used to deal with the impairments caused by heavy ISI and signal reflections. A concatenated channel coding structure is employed to efficiently increase the transmission capability in the presence of strong additive crosstalk noise. This channel coding scheme consists of an inner 4&barbelow;-D&barbelow;imensional T&barbelow;rellis C&barbelow;oded M&barbelow;odulation (4D-TCM) and an outer R&barbelow;eed-S&barbelow;olomon (RS) code separated by an interleaver. In this thesis, we investigated the potential transmission performance improvement by using Turbo code in ADSL DMT systems. To achieve this, we first proposed a turbo coding structure that fits well in the current ADSL DMT system architecture. This structure is very similar to the existing concatenated channel coding structure, except a bandwidth efficient T&barbelow;urbo T&barbelow;rellis C&barbelow;oded M&barbelow;odulation (TTCM) is used instead of the 4D-TCM. To obtain high bandwidth efficiency, only part of the bits are turbo coded and the uncoded bits are protected by a constellation mapping similar to Ungerboeck's set partitioning in TCM. The proposed TTCM was shown to provide extremely good performance when a S&barbelow;ymbol M&barbelow;aximum a&barbelow; p&barbelow;osteriori (SMAP) decoding algorithm is employed. In spite of the good performance of this SMAP algorithm, we proposed to use a simplified TTCM decoding structure to avoid the excessive decoding complexity introduced by the possibly large number of uncoded bits. The proposed turbo coded ADSL DMT system was simulated to evaluate the achievable transmission performance in a stationary noise environment and its performance was compared to that obtained by using the 4D-TCM. Simulation results showed significant performance improvements by using turbo codes.
